  2. 0:10>> It's October. [music] Fall is definitely
  3. 0:12here, and fall hauls are taking over on
  4. 0:14social media right now.
  5. 0:16>> [music]
  6. 0:16>> And if you also feel like you're
  7. 0:17supposed to buy a whole new closet in
  8. 0:20order to be [music] allowed to enjoy
  9. 0:22fall, but don't want to spend your money
  10. 0:24and jump into overconsumption trends,
  11. 0:26[music] then don't hide it, good girl, I
  12. 0:28got you. I absolutely refuse to buy a
  13. 0:32single new item this fall. [music] I
  14. 0:34just reset what I already had the German
  15. 0:36way for $0.
  16. 0:39So, today I'm going to show you how
  17. 0:41[music] I fixed, swapped, mended, and
  18. 0:45sold a lot of my items
  19. 0:47>> [music]
  20. 0:47>> and restyled what I already owned. And
  21. 0:50at the end, I'm going to show you five
  22. 0:52of my fall outfits that didn't require a
  23. 0:54single shopping trip. We Germans are not
  24. 0:56very well known for being super
  25. 0:58fashionable. Let me tell you, we know
  26. 1:00how to make [music] things work and get
  27. 1:02the most out of what we already own. So,
  28. 1:05the rules for this fall for me were no
  29. 1:08hauls, no shopping budget, like zero, no
  30. 1:12me and Tim at a, and my four easy simple
  31. 1:14approaches, which I will show you in
  32. 1:15this video, [music]
  33. 1:17which helped me to build my fall
  34. 1:19wardrobe for $0.
  35. 1:23Before I look for [music] replacement, I
  36. 1:25want to make sure that the original
  37. 1:28actually needs replacement or if I'm
  38. 1:30just being too lazy. Because a loose
  39. 1:32button on a cardigan doesn't [music]
  40. 1:33mean that I need a new cardigan. It
  41. 1:36actually only means that [music] I
  42. 1:38probably have to sew on a button. So, I
  43. 1:41search for maybe three or four little
  44. 1:42projects [music] in my wardrobe, pieces
  45. 1:45I've been avoiding lately because I knew
  46. 1:47something was off or broken. Just a
  47. 1:49couple of pieces I can put back into use
  48. 1:51by simply cutting some loose threads or
  49. 1:54sewing something back [music] on.
  50. 1:55Sometimes a loose thread or button is
  51. 1:58the only thing why we avoid item. And if
  52. 2:01you have this inner feeling of absolute
  53. 2:03refusal to take care of this item and to
  54. 2:05put like a tiny bit of effort, then you
  55. 2:08probably don't love it anyways and then
  56. 2:10you can probably declutter it. But for
  57. 2:13most items, you will see that it's
  58. 2:15absolutely worth it to put a little bit
  59. 2:17of work into it. It's actually not super
  60. 2:19hard to learn to sew. [music]
  61. 2:21Um in Germany, I have a sewing machine,
  62. 2:24but here for the US, I just bought this
  63. 2:26for a couple of dollars in the thrift
  64. 2:28store and it has everything I need to
  65. 2:31fix minor [music] things around my
  66. 2:33clothing. Or you can just get those glue
  67. 2:35patches, which you can iron on your
  68. 2:37clothes. I always use these to shorten
  69. 2:40uh old uh pants from my kids for [music]
  70. 2:43the summer, but you can also just use it
  71. 2:45for little repairs or to make a dress a
  72. 2:48little bit shorter. There are so many
  73. 2:50ways to use those and they are also just
  74. 2:53a couple of dollars.
  75. 2:54>> [music]
  76. 2:54>> Sewing and putting glue patches on our
  77. 2:57stuff and everything is something
  78. 2:58[music] I absolutely associate with my
  79. 3:01grandparents because they never threw
  80. 3:03something away.
  81. 3:04>> [music]
  82. 3:04>> And you don't have to become an expert
  83. 3:06in sewing. The point is just to treat
  84. 3:09every small reason or every small damage
  85. 3:12in your items as a reason to shop.
  86. 3:15>> [music]
  87. 3:17>> The next point is probably going to be
  88. 3:20the one that will make the biggest
  89. 3:21difference in your fall closet. My
  90. 3:23friend and I just hosted a fall clothing
  91. 3:26swap in my home
  92. 3:29and it was an absolute success. I mean,
  93. 3:31look at all those cool items I got for
  94. 3:34free just in exchange for [music] my
  95. 3:36clothes that I didn't want to wear
  96. 3:38anymore. The idea is simple. Give up
  97. 3:41scrolling and shopping for friends and
  98. 3:43community. Just put a simple invitation
  99. 3:45together with Canva. Ours turned out
  100. 3:47super cute and just invite everybody you
  101. 3:50know who has approximately the same
  102. 3:53size. Everybody had to bring 10
  103. 3:55wearable, clean clothes that might be a
  104. 3:59treasure for somebody else. Now, if
  105. 4:01somebody wants to bring more, they can
  106. 4:02bring [music] more. Everything that you
  107. 4:05or your friends are ready to let go of.
  108. 4:07Just make sure that all the people that
  109. 4:09come to your clothing swap have
  110. 4:10approximately the same size and that you
  111. 4:13have a system so that it doesn't end in
  112. 4:17chaos because everybody wants to have
  113. 4:18the best pieces. So, we had a system
  114. 4:20where we spread out everything evenly.
  115. 4:23We sorted it by categories like dresses,
  116. 4:26pullovers, whatever, and then we took
  117. 4:28turns or rounds and in every round
  118. 4:30everybody was allowed to pick four
  119. 4:32pieces, [music]
  120. 4:34try them on, and if you like something,
  121. 4:36then you could just put it in your bag,
  122. 4:37take it home, and if you didn't like it,
  123. 4:39then you just put it back into the pile
  124. 4:40and somebody else could try it. So, we
  125. 4:42did several rounds and everything that
  126. 4:44was left in the end can then be donated
  127. 4:48or sold and then the money can be used
  128. 4:50for a good purpose. And of course,
  129. 4:52nobody bought anything special for the
  130. 4:54clothing swap. There was no pressure of
  131. 4:56bringing something impressive. You will
  132. 4:58be surprised by how other people will
  133. 5:00love the items that you were thinking
  134. 5:02about as a burden. Your trash is maybe
  135. 5:05somebody else's treasure and the other
  136. 5:07way around, you can find so many
  137. 5:09treasures for your own wardrobe. And you
  138. 5:11keep items out of overfilled donation
  139. 5:13centers or the landfill at the same
  140. 5:15time. And it's so much fun. Everybody
  141. 5:18brought a snack. We did some try- ons
  142. 5:20and you have a couple of girls around
  143. 5:22which you can consult whether this piece
  144. 5:24is really made for you or not. In our
  145. 5:26swap, we had five boxes in the beginning
  146. 5:29and in the end, I only had to bring one
  147. 5:32box and one bag to the donation center.
  148. 5:35However you do it, it's just a good
  149. 5:36thing to [music] keep things out of the
  150. 5:38landfill and to extend their life cycle.
  151. 5:41It really feels like free shopping and
  152. 5:43you're definitely more willing to try
  153. 5:45other things or a new style because you
  154. 5:47only had to pay for it with your own
  155. 5:49unwanted [music] clothing. Honestly, I
  156. 5:51think we will do that now once or twice
  157. 5:53a year, maybe for the spring season and
  158. 5:55the fall season because it was so much
  159. 5:57fun and such a success. I just love that
  160. 5:59something can feel super fresh for me
  161. 6:01without having to be brand new. And a
  162. 6:03piece I've stopped reaching for can be
  163. 6:05perfect for a friend of mine.
  164. 6:10My rule here is simple. Sell first and
  165. 6:13then maybe buy something new. One way I
  166. 6:16massively reduced our household items
  167. 6:19and became more minimalistic was by only
  168. 6:22using the money I freed up through
  169. 6:24selling stuff we had sitting in our
  170. 6:26home. That's basically automatic key.
  171. 6:29Well, that's a tongue breaker. So,
  172. 6:30that's basically downsizing. So, if you
  173. 6:33really really need something new to make
  174. 6:34an outfit work or sometimes we're
  175. 6:36missing key pieces like a basic long
  176. 6:38sleeve or something, then sell stuff
  177. 6:41first and then you can buy it from that
  178. 6:43money. But of course, we don't want to
  179. 6:44create another big project. So, we want
  180. 6:47to avoid
  181. 6:48>> [music]
  182. 6:48>> a lot of stuff sitting in a bag
  183. 6:50somewhere in the corner not selling. So,
  184. 6:53we are agreeing on A, [music] we are
  185. 6:56either selling what's worth more than
  186. 6:58$20 or B, we are selling bundles so that
  187. 7:02we can get rid of more items at the same
  188. 7:04time and still get some value out of
  189. 7:06them. The point is to move something
  190. 7:08along to give it to [music] somebody
  191. 7:10else and not keep storing it because I
  192. 7:12wish I get back everything I paid for it
  193. 7:15like
  194. 7:15>> [music]
  195. 7:15>> 2 years ago. The money's gone anyway, so
  196. 7:17take it as a lesson and then move on.
  197. 7:20And very important, either save up this
  198. 7:22money you made from the sales for one or
  199. 7:25two [music] super high quality pieces
  200. 7:28that have been sitting on your little
  201. 7:29wish list forever and that will last a
  202. 7:31long time or you go second hand shopping
  203. 7:33or the best thing would be [music] like
  204. 7:35combine both. Shop for a high quality
  205. 7:38items second time. You can find great
  206. 7:40quality items on Vinted or Poshmark for
  207. 7:44$5 to $10 instead of, I don't know, 70.
  208. 7:46[music]
  209. 7:47And there is so much clothing around
  210. 7:49already. You just have to find it.
  211. 7:51[music] But be careful, selling one
  212. 7:53sweater doesn't earn you a free pass to
  213. 7:55buy another sweater. Think about what
  214. 7:57you really need to make an outfit work
  215. 7:58and then try to get a high-quality item
  216. 8:01secondhand for less money. So, in the
  217. 8:03end, buying nothing is still the first
  218. 8:05option.
  219. 8:06>> [music]
  220. 8:06>> But if you really want to buy something
  221. 8:08new, then make sure that you're not
  222. 8:10spending [music] additional money, but
  223. 8:12only the money that came already out of
  224. 8:14your closet.
  225. 8:18Okay, now comes the easiest part, which
  226. 8:20makes your closet feel totally different
  227. 8:22without adding a single thing. Every one
  228. 8:24of us has those things in the closet
  229. 8:27where we are like, "This is super cute,
  230. 8:29but I don't know how to style this." So,
  231. 8:32it sits in the closet and waits for its
  232. 8:34day to shine. [music] And most of us
  233. 8:36only wear 20% of what we have in the
  234. 8:39closet. So, to break out of this habit
  235. 8:41of wearing the same clothes every single
  236. 8:44day, we are making a small fall mood
  237. 8:47board on Pinterest. Just grab your
  238. 8:49laptop, open Pinterest, and open a mood
  239. 8:52board. Type in the keywords you like,
  240. 8:55type [music] in some inspiration, type
  241. 8:57in your height or your hair color. I
  242. 9:00have a mood board for every season and
  243. 9:03usually I'm checking the weather
  244. 9:05forecast on Sundays and then I'm
  245. 9:07planning my outfit for the next three or
  246. 9:09four days. But make sure that the mood
  247. 9:11board doesn't get too overwhelming
  248. 9:14because we don't need another place
  249. 9:15where we collected hundreds of
  250. 9:17inspirations and never use them like our
  251. 9:19online recipe collections, right? I know
  252. 9:21we all got those recipe collections and
  253. 9:23we never cook something and we don't
  254. 9:25want that to happen with our clothes
  255. 9:27mood board. So, keep it simple and while
  256. 9:30you're on Pinterest, don't fall for
  257. 9:32buying new product. Look at how the
  258. 9:35outfit works, if you've got something
  259. 9:37similar in the wardrobe, or and that is
  260. 9:39my favorite thing, search for outfits
  261. 9:41for the things that you love, but you
  262. 9:43never wear because you don't know how to
  263. 9:45style them. You can just type in, I
  264. 9:47don't know, red leather jacket, and then
  265. 9:49you [music] can close the app, go to
  266. 9:50your closet, and then you can see what
  267. 9:52you can do with your own clothes that
  268. 9:54look similar.
  269. 9:55>> [music]
  270. 9:55>> And maybe the inspiration picture has a
  271. 9:57brown coat, and mine is beige, and that
  272. 9:59is fine. So, we're just borrowing the
  273. 10:02ideas and
  274. 10:03>> [music]
  275. 10:03>> the inspiration to restyle our own
  276. 10:05wardrobe instead of recreating what
  277. 10:07somebody else has. So, try a different
  278. 10:09pair of shoes, I don't know, roll up
  279. 10:11your sleeves, try a belt, try a hat, and
  280. 10:14don't forget to wear your jewelry and
  281. 10:16accessories. Do yourself the favor and
  282. 10:18don't search for inspiration on
  283. 10:20Instagram because you will get sucked
  284. 10:22into the algorithm and will never find
  285. 10:24your way out again. Your outfits will be
  286. 10:26more versatile, you will start to wear a
  287. 10:29higher percentage of your closet, and an
  288. 10:31outfit that feels completely new because
  289. 10:33you've never worn this combination will
  290. 10:35cost you zero dollars. So, that was my
  291. 10:37fall closet reset. You can actually do
  292. 10:40this for every single season, doesn't
  293. 10:42have to be only fall. So, before you go
  294. 10:44shopping, especially on Black Friday,
  295. 10:46try to mend what you have, swap what you
  296. 10:49got, sell before replacing, and get
  297. 10:52inspired and restyle. No shopping spree,
  298. 10:54just some attention to what was already
  299. 10:57there. I think it's important that we
  300. 10:58all start to appreciate a little bit
  301. 11:00more the resources that we already got,
  302. 11:02and me personally, I'd rather start the
  303. 11:06season outdoors in the fall forest with
  304. 11:08clothes I love, than having a shopping
  305. 11:12list of things that I'm [music] supposed
  306. 11:14to buy at the mall, and then I spend
  307. 11:16most of my time shopping somewhere
  308. 11:18inside while there's the most beautiful
  309. 11:20season outside. So, what will you start
  310. 11:23with? Let me know in the comments below.
  311. 11:25I actually read every single comment,
  312. 11:27and I try to answer every single
  313. 11:29comment. And if you're in need of a
  314. 11:31general declutter of your closet and you
  315. 11:33feel just overwhelmed by the sheer
  316. 11:34amount of what you got, then check out
  317. 11:37this video where I explain the German
  318. 11:39method, which only takes 1 hour of
  319. 11:41active decluttering time. And if you
  320. 11:43like this video and you want to see more
  321. 11:45about German frugality, how we live a
  322. 11:48minimalistic frugal life in the US and
  323. 11:51soon again in Germany, [music]
  324. 11:53then please follow and subscribe and
  325. 11:55then we will see each other in the next
  326. 11:56video.
