How I FINALLY got out of Shorts Jail (and went viral) — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00If your views keep getting stuck, you're
- 0:01not shadow banned, you're just in shorts
- 0:03jail. I've been there, but then I found
- 0:04the keys and then I got over 300 million
- 0:07views and helped thousands of creators
- 0:08and businesses do the same. Today, those
- 0:10three keys are yours. Not only that,
- 0:12you're going to get a free tool to make
- 0:13sure you never go back to shorts jail,
- 0:15or jails, there's three of them. Let's
- 0:17just start with the one where 99% of
- 0:19creators get stuck, the swipe jail. If
- 0:22your short stop under 1,000 views, you
- 0:24failed YouTube's 3-second test. Like
- 0:26this video.
- 0:29Nothing happens to make me want to stick
- 0:31around, which means it doesn't have a
- 0:32hook. And sure, a hook can get you out
- 0:34of swipe jail, but wouldn't you rather
- 0:36just skip all three jails at once? I
- 0:38mean, that's what the biggest creators
- 0:40do when they use the triple hook.
- 0:44That first channel I showed you did have
- 0:46one video that got out of swipe jail.
- 0:48See if you can pick out what it did
- 0:49right.
- 0:52This one nailed the visual hook. A plane
- 0:54haphazardly flying through the sky,
- 0:55that'll make anybody curious, but
- 0:57nothing else happened. They couldn't
- 0:59triple hook if they wanted to because
- 1:00there was nothing else to be curious
- 1:01about. But let's say there was a reason
- 1:03to post this, like the plane lands in an
- 1:05unexpected way.
- 1:08Here's that version with a triple hook.
- 1:10One, visual. He already had it, the
- 1:11plane was there, I just changed the
- 1:13ending and shortened it up a bit because
- 1:1477 seconds is way too long. Two, verbal.
- 1:22Okay, we're good. Three, textual, like
- 1:25Roblox devs didn't plan for this or
- 1:27craziest landing ever. It doesn't matter
- 1:29as long as it amplifies the story. This
- 1:31video got 61 million views with only two
- 1:33hooks. See if you can guess which one I
- 1:35left out. Nobody was buying this man's
- 1:37food, so he took out his iPhone and he
- 1:39glued it to the ground in front of his
- 1:40stand. If you said text hook, you are
- 1:42correct cuz the subtitles aren't really
- 1:45a hook. They don't add anything to the
- 1:46story, not like a caption does, but it
- 1:49doesn't need a caption because the
- 1:50visual hook is so strong. A real person
- 1:53inside a 3D scene stops the scroll every
- 1:55time, and I know that because my
- 1:57students keep going viral too, and like
- 1:5970% of them never made content before.
- 2:01Hell, one of them just started a new
- 2:03channel and the first two shorts, both
- 2:06viral. I think if we added captions, it
- 2:08would probably be overkill at this
- 2:09point. And also, I don't want to mess
- 2:11with the workflow that's paying all my
- 2:12bills. The point is, you don't need
- 2:14three hooks if you got one really,
- 2:16really strong hook. By the way, if you
- 2:18want results like my students and I,
- 2:19just go to viral.school. Link's in the
- 2:21description. Here is another example of
- 2:25one hook carrying the entire piece of
- 2:26content.
- 2:29All right, so first impression, one
- 2:32really, really strong hook. Seriously,
- 2:33don't you want to know what's going to
- 2:34happen after you read that caption? And
- 2:36of course, the visual's there to back it
- 2:37up, but without the caption, this would
- 2:39just seem like a random video from
- 2:40somebody's camera roll. But they did add
- 2:42the caption, and because of that, they
- 2:44passed the swipe test and now you will
- 2:46too. But be careful because even if you
- 2:48have a good hook, most creators that get
- 2:50out of swipe jail fall right into jail
- 2:52number two. If your short's above 1K but
- 2:54under 10,000 views, put yourself in the
- 2:57viewer's shoes cuz you just got locked
- 2:59up in reaction jail.
- 3:01Those who escape this jail all have one
- 3:03thing in common, they understand
- 3:04perspective. Shorts viewers are not your
- 3:07friend. They don't care about you or
- 3:08your job or the game you're playing or
- 3:10your cat. They Well, they might care
- 3:12about your cat, but the fact is, you
- 3:14have to make them care about your
- 3:16content. The easiest way to do this is a
- 3:18strategy that comes from the host of my
- 3:19favorite podcast, My First Million. His
- 3:21name is Sean Perry. People will only
- 3:24share or act if they feel something at
- 3:26the end. The only things people will
- 3:28share is things that are LOL, WTF, OMG,
- 3:31wow. There's like seven or eight
- 3:33emotions that people can tap into. We
- 3:34don't write a script until we first pick
- 3:36the emotion, then we'll write a script,
- 3:38and then we'll go check, do we think
- 3:39that's going to create this reaction
- 3:40somebody?
- 3:40>> Think about the last time you shared a
- 3:41short with someone or a reel or a TikTok
- 3:43or whatever. Why did you share it? It
- 3:45made you feel something and you wanted
- 3:47someone else to feel that thing that you
- 3:49experienced. It sounds really weird when
- 3:51you say it out loud, but that is the
- 3:52reason. You don't share information, you
- 3:54share reactions. LOL, wow, WTF, aw, or
- 4:00or finally, like I really agree. I don't
- 4:03know, there's not like a three-letter
- 4:04acronym for I agree. The strategy here
- 4:07is start with a reaction in mind and
- 4:09tailor everything in your content to
- 4:11that reaction. If a line is not going to
- 4:13get that reaction or it doesn't build to
- 4:15the thing that gets that reaction, cut
- 4:17it. Here's an example of wow.
- 4:24Zach King is everywhere because people
- 4:26share him everywhere. Here's an example
- 4:29of LOL.
- 4:34This video has several cuts in it
- 4:36because every second is vital to getting
- 4:38to the LOL. Could you imagine what this
- 4:40would be like without the cuts? Like him
- 4:42doing the thing and then like walking
- 4:43back in and getting the phone. That's
- 4:45what most creators are doing. Imagine a
- 4:47Minecraft creator that something funny
- 4:49happens at the end, but they keep the
- 4:50first 30 seconds and then they wonder
- 4:52why they don't get views. All right, the
- 4:54last example, aw. This is the reaction
- 4:57that education channels usually go for.
- 4:59Is 30K view jail a real thing? YouTube
- 5:01will give you a certain amount of
- 5:02impressions up to 100, and if you get a
- 5:04certain amount of engagement within that
- 5:06100 impressions, it'll give you more.
- 5:07This is a short I put out a few days
- 5:09ago. Now, while I didn't film this to be
- 5:11a short, it still got out of reaction
- 5:12jail because I packed it with so much
- 5:14information and chopped out all the
- 5:17stuff that wasn't relevant to the shorts
- 5:18viewer, and there was a lot of stuff
- 5:20because that video was a creator
- 5:22breakdown for somebody else's channel,
- 5:24and there were some things that I said
- 5:25that were for him. But I chopped out all
- 5:27that stuff because it would have just
- 5:28wasted the shorts viewer's time. Plus,
- 5:30zip. Never, ever, ever, ever, ever
- 5:33think you need to make your short longer
- 5:35for it to perform better. If you ever
- 5:37catch yourself thinking, "Maybe I should
- 5:39say this and that would lead to higher
- 5:41retention." Stop. You're an evil
- 5:43villain. If you don't want someone doing
- 5:44that to you, then don't do it to a
- 5:46viewer. That's the golden rule of
- 5:48YouTube shorts, and if you follow the
- 5:49golden rule, you'll have great
- 5:51performance. Plus, if you have
- 5:53competition, a 15-second tutorial will
- 5:56always perform better than a 40-second
- 5:57tutorial on the same subject. Even
- 5:59though I didn't waste any time in the
- 6:00short, it probably still won't go viral,
- 6:02and you're about to find out why. Even
- 6:04if you're not in this jail yet, pay
- 6:06attention because with what I'm about to
- 6:07say, you'll probably just blow right
- 6:09past it. And trust me, you do not want
- 6:11to get caught in 30K jail cuz this is
- 6:14the toughest jail to get out of. Cuz
- 6:15after it, you shoot up to 100,000. This
- 6:17is format jail.
- 6:19You didn't get swiped, you made someone
- 6:21care, but the algorithm stopped pushing
- 6:23you anyway. Why did that happen? Well,
- 6:25it's not cuz your ideas suck or
- 6:26anything, it's just your presentation of
- 6:28them might, which is why we need to take
- 6:30a page from THE BOOK OF MOTIVATIONAL
- 6:32SPEAKER Tony Robbins, everyone. Find
- 6:34somebody that's already getting the
- 6:36result and figure out how they do it and
- 6:38do the same thing. Success leaves what?
- 6:41Clues. Success leaves clues. If you're
- 6:44in the format jail, it means that you're
- 6:46pretty good at everything else, you're
- 6:48just not taking enough outside
- 6:49inspiration.
- 6:50Outliers. You might have heard of them,
- 6:52but with shorts, it's a totally
- 6:53different thing. I'll explain here in a
- 6:55second, but if you haven't heard of
- 6:56them,
- 6:57if you go to somebody's channel and they
- 6:59usually get 5,000 views, but then you
- 7:01see a million view video, that's an
- 7:03outlier. If you go to a channel and you
- 7:05see a bunch of million view videos and
- 7:07they get a million view video, not an
- 7:09outlier, that's just what they normally
- 7:11do. Okay, now, with shorts, it's not the
- 7:14idea, it's not the video, it's not the
- 7:16packaging that you need to pay attention
- 7:18to, it's the format. It's the way that
- 7:21it's presented. Let me explain. All
- 7:22right, so here's an outlier that pretty
- 7:24much anybody can put a twist on.
- 7:34Is that dude filming himself as two
- 7:36characters? Okay, so this turns real
- 7:37meta because like there's another guy
- 7:39spying on these guys and then that guy's
- 7:41getting spied on and so on. I just think
- 7:43this third-person seeing you filming
- 7:45yourself format is really funny and
- 7:47anybody can turn it into pretty much
- 7:48anything. Here's a solid visual hook.
- 7:51This is day one of dancing 1 second for
- 7:53every new follower I get.
- 7:54>> Okay, you don't have to dance, but just
- 7:55putting your camera in the microwave and
- 7:57opening it to start, that's a solid
- 7:58visual hook. All right, here's one more.
- 8:02This person's going to hate me so much.
- 8:04Oh, sick. I got here first.
- 8:06Now I can just chill for a sec.
- 8:08>> All right, so two different thinking
- 8:10perspectives. I could imagine that if
- 8:11you're working at a coffee shop and
- 8:13you're so nervous ordering, but then the
- 8:15barista's like super nervous. I don't
- 8:16know, you can pretty much turn that into
- 8:18anything that involves two people.
- 8:19Especially because it'll get the
- 8:20reaction, "Yeah, totally true. I think
- 8:22that way, too." There are tools to find
- 8:24these outliers for you, but the key is
- 8:26to just find what works and put your own
- 8:28spin on it. As for that free tool I
- 8:30mentioned earlier, you have all the
- 8:31keys, right? But sometimes keys just
- 8:33aren't enough, which is why I created
- 8:35the shorts lock pick, the somewhat
- 8:38unethical guide to breaking out of
- 8:39shorts jail. It's got every technique
- 8:41and trick to take your shorts to the
- 8:42next level. Just please, please use the
- 8:44tricks responsibly, and if you get in
- 8:46trouble, you didn't get it from me,
- 8:47okay? Link's in the description, right
- 8:49next to the link where you can make a
- 8:50crap load of money with shorts, the the
- 8:523D animation thing. If you're wondering
- 8:54how much money those make, by the way,
- 8:56take a look at this video right here.
- 9:00>> [music]
- 9:00>> Maybe it's on the thumbnail.
- 9:03That's per month.
