- 0:00Hunter McIntyre.
- 0:01>> What's up, bud?
- 0:02>> Welcome to the podcast.
- 0:03>> Why do you do the clap, by the way?
- 0:04Because I can't still figure this out
- 0:05about the media thing. Is that just like
- 0:06a sound cut for you guys?
- 0:08>> So, it lines everything up. It lines the
- 0:09cameras up with the audio.
- 0:11>> And there's some way of syncing it all
- 0:12behind the scenes.
- 0:13>> It's just so for when you edit it,
- 0:15there's a big spike in the audio.
- 0:17>> All right. I like it. I learn something
- 0:19every day. Thank you. I'm very grateful.
- 0:21>> Thank you for being here. Oh, thank you
- 0:23for letting Hus be here. Uh we're at
- 0:25your crib.
- 0:26>> Yeah, dude.
- 0:27>> The ranch. The famous ranch. You know,
- 0:29honestly, I got to say I'm grateful
- 0:30because I never sit out here. So, this
- 0:32is something that I can say I'm grateful
- 0:33to you. I think once you've lived up
- 0:35here for so many years, you get so I
- 0:38kind of just sequester myself inside of
- 0:39that living room right there. And people
- 0:41are like, "Do you ever eat at this
- 0:42table?" And I'm like, "No." And then
- 0:44when guests come over, they kind of drag
- 0:45me into other parts of the house that I
- 0:47never really give energy to. So, sitting
- 0:48here, I'm actually pretty grateful being
- 0:50here.
- 0:50>> Yeah, it's cool. We got the camping
- 0:52chairs out,
- 0:52>> dude. Best pro shop, dude.
- 0:54>> I just say like I think the hillbilly
- 0:56life is just suits me so well. Like I
- 0:58call this part of Malibu, Alabama. And
- 1:01this is like true hillbilly just
- 1:05perfection, dude. There's these these
- 1:06lawn chairs you can just sink back in.
- 1:08You feel like a total regal guy. It cost
- 1:10me 70 bucks where most people in Malibur
- 1:13probably spending $7,000 per chair. I
- 1:15feel like a king.
- 1:16>> You are a king.
- 1:17>> Thank you.
- 1:18>> For the people who may not know who you
- 1:20are, which I assume everyone listening
- 1:22to this does know who you are, but would
- 1:24you just be able to kind of like
- 1:25summarize yourself?
- 1:27>> Yeah. Uh, it changes all the time to be
- 1:30totally honest. Um, I would say that
- 1:33most of my adult life has been defined
- 1:35by athletics and because of that I've
- 1:38been able to travel around the world,
- 1:40whether it be through television shows
- 1:42or professional athletics. I've always
- 1:44kind of been a mercenary. My goal in
- 1:47life was to always to find the biggest
- 1:48challenge and get, you know, get get a
- 1:51paycheck attached to it. So that means
- 1:53like sometimes I would just get
- 1:55contacted and they're like, "Hunter,
- 1:56there's a television show with a
- 1:58$100,000 cash prize. Like can you beat
- 1:59these guys?" Or it's like, "Hunter
- 2:02McIntyre, like there's, you know,
- 2:03they're giving out wild cards to the
- 2:05CrossFit games. No one's ever been
- 2:06invited. Do you want to try to see if
- 2:08you can get invited?" Boom. I get
- 2:09invited. Through that entire lifestyle,
- 2:12I've won 10 world titles. I've won three
- 2:15of them in high rocks, which is a very
- 2:17popular sport now. So I guess that's
- 2:18more relevant to talk about. I've set
- 2:20many world records like Murf and many
- 2:23world records in high rocks, both in
- 2:25doubles and solos.
- 2:27Um,
- 2:28and my life has just been crazy, man.
- 2:30Like, I never really was destined to be
- 2:33an athlete. I kind of just created it as
- 2:35I went. And then the really interesting
- 2:38thing that's happened to me in the past
- 2:40five years was COVID shut down this life
- 2:42where us as athletes, we used our bodies
- 2:45to make money. That disappeared
- 2:48overnight. So, I started businesses and
- 2:51now I'm a businessman and I have
- 2:53employees and I travel around the world
- 2:55with people who work with me. I don't
- 2:57like to say work for me, they work with
- 2:59me. There's people who I work with,
- 3:00they're probably better than me at
- 3:01everything that I do, which I'm lucky to
- 3:03have them alongside of me. So, I'm very
- 3:05multi-dimensional. And I think that's
- 3:08been the greatest asset that I've ever
- 3:10had is that I've never allowed myself to
- 3:12just stay in a lane for too long because
- 3:15I think that also that even though it
- 3:17may make you excellent, it makes you
- 3:18sometimes lazy and a little bit soft
- 3:20because as soon as you get out of your
- 3:21lane, you you got wobbly feet and I've
- 3:25just been very dynamic and wild. So
- 3:27hopefully that's a good introduction to
- 3:28who I am. It
- 3:29>> definitely is. Where did the desire to
- 3:31become the best at whatever you do come
- 3:34from and where did it start?
- 3:36I think one of the biggest reasons why I
- 3:39became so good at things that I was
- 3:40trying to achieve in was I had three
- 3:42older brothers and it was very not in an
- 3:45oppressive way but it was very difficult
- 3:47to be substantiated in a room when you
- 3:50were the smallest person. I mean like my
- 3:52older oldest brother was 10 years older
- 3:54than me so that might as well have been
- 3:55like he was 100 years older than me. He
- 3:57was a [ __ ] titan compared to me when
- 3:58I was younger. So I had to be very
- 4:01aggressive in my strategies all the
- 4:03time. And then what really kicked
- 4:07everything into like turbo mode was that
- 4:09I got into a lot of trouble when I was
- 4:10in high school. Had to go to was
- 4:12arrested many times. Had to go to rehab
- 4:14for a year. And when I got out of rehab,
- 4:16I went to college for the first time.
- 4:19And you're surrounded with everybody and
- 4:20everyone's trying to discover who they
- 4:21are. And I was like, am I a jock? Am I a
- 4:23party boy? Am I this or that? And I very
- 4:26quickly learned that like the world now
- 4:28when you're now that you're like gone
- 4:29from your parents, like nobody's here to
- 4:31take care of you. There's no handouts. I
- 4:33mean, there are handouts nowadays, and
- 4:34that's a longer conversation for
- 4:36different times, but there weren't a lot
- 4:38of handouts. You had to really create
- 4:40your own purpose and reason to be in the
- 4:42room, otherwise people weren't going to
- 4:43really pay attention to you. And I was
- 4:46like, I got to get good at something,
- 4:47otherwise I'm just going to be kind of
- 4:49left to the side.
- 4:51So, I kind of discovered myself and my
- 4:53physical body like took over very
- 4:55quickly. Like, I became dominant. And
- 4:58people were like, "Damn, dude, you're
- 4:59good." And I'll admit like in a selfish
- 5:02way like I [ __ ] loved it. I was very
- 5:04vain. Like you know when you're a young
- 5:06guy and someone sees your six-pack,
- 5:07they're like damn. You're like [ __ ]
- 5:09yeah. And
- 5:12it just became this thing where it was
- 5:14like I was addicted to drugs and then I
- 5:15became addicted to this. And then rather
- 5:17than becoming addicted and being in like
- 5:20the mouth of the dragon, I got on its
- 5:22back and I was riding the dragon. I was
- 5:24in [ __ ] control now. And that's a
- 5:26very hard transition to make because
- 5:28once you're in the mouth of this dragon
- 5:30of heroin, ecstasy, alcohol, [ __ ] like
- 5:33everything that is a vice for a man,
- 5:37I couldn't get out. And it was I just
- 5:40somehow wrangled myself in this
- 5:42opportunity through my physical body to
- 5:44become an athlete, a macho man, and it
- 5:48changed everything.
- 5:50>> They say that you need like a really low
- 5:53low.
- 5:54>> Yeah. to make you realize, yeah, that
- 5:57shit's bad. What was that point for you?
- 6:00>> Uh, probably the lowest low for me was a
- 6:03day where I decided to inject blacktar
- 6:06heroin. And when you look at blacktar
- 6:09heroin, it is black. It's black like
- 6:10this microphone. And it's like kind of a
- 6:13mixture of like brownish black. And it
- 6:15was going through a needle into my arm,
- 6:17being compressed through a needle. And
- 6:19it was coming into my body. And I could
- 6:21just feel the energy of wrong. This is
- 6:23wrong. But by the time the needle had
- 6:26completely compressed into itself, the
- 6:29high hit within seconds later. It felt
- 6:31like I was sliding into a hot tub. The
- 6:33high came from the bottom of my feet up
- 6:35through my knees and through the rest of
- 6:36my body. And by the time I was fully
- 6:38soaked in this high, it was unlike
- 6:41anything else. And in the middle of the
- 6:43high, I was throwing up all over the
- 6:45house. I was seeing rainbows. I was so
- 6:47high while throwing up, which is a crazy
- 6:49thing to think of. And the person who
- 6:52was my boss who is basically the version
- 6:55of my like sponsor in AA
- 6:59walked into the house. My friends let
- 7:01him into the house while I was high as
- 7:03[ __ ] on the couch and I somehow
- 7:07convinced him that I was sick and I like
- 7:09threw up in front of him and threw my
- 7:10hands. It was just a mess. And if he
- 7:13decided to go to my program officer, who
- 7:15is the person who is basically the
- 7:16steward of my title at that point, like
- 7:19if he decided to hand me back to the
- 7:21court system, I would have gone to jail.
- 7:23I somehow didn't get in trouble. He
- 7:26didn't tell on me. I don't know if I
- 7:28somehow convinced him I wasn't on drugs
- 7:29or he was just like, "This guy's so
- 7:31[ __ ] up. I feel bad for him. I'm not
- 7:32gonna rat on him." But it was this
- 7:35miracle
- 7:37because I was on the verge of going to
- 7:38jail. like I had already been kicked out
- 7:40of three rehabs and like to go to jail
- 7:43at that age and just like really
- 7:45encounter fully that my life of somewhat
- 7:48freedom was going to be fully given away
- 7:52and I'd be behind bars was just such a
- 7:54terrifying thought for especially for
- 7:56somebody like me who doesn't deal well
- 7:57with authority, doesn't deal well with
- 7:59sitting in the place for a long time.
- 8:01Like can you imagine being in solitary
- 8:02confinement? Like I just was like,
- 8:04"Fuck." It was a panic. And right then
- 8:08and there, I decided to tattoo a trident
- 8:11on my back the next day.
- 8:13>> So, is that where the trident came from?
- 8:14>> Yeah. I don't usually tell this story
- 8:16very often because it's just a bizarre
- 8:17story to tell. They're like, "What's
- 8:18what's the trident for?" I was like, "I
- 8:19like Neptune." Um,
- 8:23I sat on the couch with myself just like
- 8:25freaking out after that, just like on
- 8:27the hangover of that high. And I was
- 8:29like, "What is the only thing you've
- 8:31ever thought about in your entire life
- 8:32that could potentially
- 8:34be motivating for you to get out of this
- 8:36place?" Because I couldn't control my my
- 8:39urges for drugs and bad behavior. Like,
- 8:41if I saw a window, I had to grab a rock
- 8:43and throw it through it. Like, I needed
- 8:44these swings of energy and feelings. So,
- 8:48I sat there with myself and I was like,
- 8:50um, and I remembered when in wrestling
- 8:53camps because I was a I was an athlete
- 8:54when I was younger. In wrestling camps,
- 8:56there would be Navy Seals sitting in
- 8:57these like little tables trying to
- 9:00recruit young men being like, "Do you
- 9:02want to be a super soldier and jump out
- 9:03of planes with bazookas?" And I was
- 9:05like, "Fuck yeah, I do." Like, that'd be
- 9:07insane. And I was like, "Okay, Hunter,
- 9:10we can do this. You can get out of this.
- 9:11Like, you will become a Navy Seal." So,
- 9:15instead of just like saying it, I was
- 9:17like, "I'm going to tattoo this to my
- 9:18[ __ ] back. Like, it has to be such a
- 9:21substantial promise that I can never
- 9:23turn my back on it." And literally I
- 9:26inked it into my back in a way that is
- 9:28permanent for the rest of my life. And
- 9:31[sighs]
- 9:31[gasps] by the time I got out of rehab
- 9:33and I got like to college, I tried to
- 9:35apply and they kicked me out like right
- 9:37away. So it it got me out of my bad
- 9:40position, but I never really got to
- 9:41follow through. But that truly was my
- 9:44lowest moment and it is such a
- 9:46reflection point where anytime I clo
- 9:47close my eyes like I will start running
- 9:50right now to get away from that place.
- 9:52>> That's some story. That's a [ __ ] up
- 9:54story.
- 9:55>> No, it is. Um, so from there you then
- 9:58obviously get into working on yourself,
- 10:01working on your body, getting fitter,
- 10:03getting stronger. But
- 10:04>> was it modeling?
- 10:06>> Yeah.
- 10:06>> First came about.
- 10:07>> Super random. So this finger right here
- 10:10was the reason why I got into modeling.
- 10:13I was training to get into uh on the
- 10:18wrestling team. I was on academic
- 10:20probation because I had [ __ ] up so
- 10:23much and they weren't letting me wrestle
- 10:24and I don't really understand the reason
- 10:25why but it just was the case. So the
- 10:28first semester I couldn't wrestle.
- 10:29Second semester I was going to try to
- 10:31wrestle 165 and I was already above 200.
- 10:34So I was just pumping iron and like I
- 10:37was just learning about nutrition. I
- 10:38bought Arnold Schwarzenegger's book
- 10:40bodybuilding, you know, I was just going
- 10:42after it and I was getting [ __ ]
- 10:45shredded, dude. I was just like so lean,
- 10:47so diced. I was doing everything I could
- 10:50to create striation, shape, bulges, and
- 10:53also get super fit for wrestling. And
- 10:56you know, I was my own little version of
- 10:58a stud, like 10% of the man I am today.
- 11:00But I look good with my shirt off. I
- 11:04jumped out of my um I jumped out of my
- 11:09bedroom in my underpants basically at a
- 11:12house party that we had at our house.
- 11:14And this guy looked me in the face. He's
- 11:15like, "You should be a model." And I was
- 11:17like, "Fuck yeah, I should be a model."
- 11:19And I didn't think anything of it. I
- 11:20thought we were just drunk and riffing.
- 11:22And
- 11:24next thing you know, I get I was on a
- 11:26runway in Providence, Rhode Island the
- 11:28next week. And then all of a sudden that
- 11:31summer, I went down to Miami and I got
- 11:32signed with an agency. And then I was
- 11:34over in Europe working with another
- 11:36agency. And then I was working with
- 11:37Abbercrombie and Fitch. And then I was
- 11:39on another campaign. Then I was moving
- 11:40to New York City and becoming a high
- 11:42fashion model there. And if I'm being
- 11:44totally honest, I was awful at it
- 11:46because I didn't really care about
- 11:49taking pictures. I just cared about this
- 11:52that high again that I'm kind of talking
- 11:53about. It was another version of a
- 11:55validation. And admittedly, it it it
- 11:59kind of dragged me deeper into drugs
- 12:01because the world of modeling, at least
- 12:02the world that I was spending time in,
- 12:04and I'm not saying blanket statement
- 12:05about modeling, but more so where I was
- 12:07at, we had very easy access to drugs.
- 12:11And I did more and more. And all my job
- 12:14was at the time was to just be ripped
- 12:17and to be get [ __ ] up. And I got
- 12:21[ __ ] up, but you didn't have to get
- 12:22[ __ ] up. But like I wanted to I wanted
- 12:24the free nightclub tables and everything
- 12:26that came with the position. And I was
- 12:30good at it, man. Like the same endurance
- 12:32that I have for sport right now totally
- 12:35applied to doing drugs and alcohol. Like
- 12:36I could bury anybody and I could just
- 12:39outlast and I was crazy. The same surge
- 12:42as you see me do in sport, dude was
- 12:44you'd see me at the table. Like if we
- 12:46were just sitting there with a lull, I
- 12:47would just grab the bottle, unccorked
- 12:49that top that they use to slowly pour it
- 12:51out and I would just start chugging
- 12:53because I was like, "What the [ __ ] are
- 12:55we doing? We need to pick it up." Like,
- 12:56and it would just be those moments. And
- 12:59it was just a wild wild period about a
- 13:01year and a half of my life where it just
- 13:03was uncontrollable high fashion
- 13:05stupidity.
- 13:06>> Yeah, that's uh that's crazy. But we
- 13:08could see do you think having that skill
- 13:11set and having obviously your physical
- 13:13abilities as well, you could be a great
- 13:16ultra runner?
- 13:17>> Probably. You know, I really was
- 13:19inspired when I watched this Last Soul
- 13:22thing.
- 13:22>> Yeah. because I've won 24-hour world
- 13:25titles in back in the obstacle course
- 13:27racing days. So, I thought to myself, I
- 13:31was like, "Damn, man. I went on like
- 13:33multi-day benders." And I don't ever
- 13:35stop moving. If you watch me, like
- 13:37obviously like we intentionally are very
- 13:38restful when it comes to training. Like,
- 13:40we try to stay off our feet for the
- 13:42intention of being restful. But if it
- 13:45comes to a day where I'm not training
- 13:46and like I'm kind of an off season,
- 13:48dude, I'm just I'm just up moving,
- 13:50chopping wood, picking things up,
- 13:52fidgeting around, like I never run out
- 13:54of energy. And I also don't sleep very
- 13:56much. That's one thing that I've had so
- 13:58many professionals come to me and be
- 14:00like, "If we could just change your
- 14:01sleeping." And I was like, "Dude, ever
- 14:03since I was a child, I don't sleep. Even
- 14:06now as a man, I don't sleep. And it
- 14:08doesn't affect anything."
- 14:09>> What is your sleep schedule,
- 14:12[sighs]
- 14:12>> dude? It could be anywhere from like as
- 14:14early as 8:30, but like that's uncommon.
- 14:17But the average time is 9:30 to 4:00.
- 14:21>> You're up at 4:00.
- 14:22>> 9:30 to 4 or 10 to 4. Like yesterday, I
- 14:27woke up at to this morning I woke up at
- 14:283:00 and then I closed my eyes again
- 14:30back till 4:30. But like I wake up and
- 14:33my body's like go and I have to beg
- 14:35myself to just like go back to sleep
- 14:36because I know that to an some degree
- 14:40that it's better to get a couple extra
- 14:42hours. But like some people I know are
- 14:45literally pounding out like these 8 to 9
- 14:47to 10 hour nights and like you hear
- 14:49about these Olympians that are doing
- 14:50that and I'm like with what capability?
- 14:53Like how like what are they doing? And I
- 14:55I buy the eye masks. I get like the the
- 14:58mouth tape, the nose tape, the blackout
- 15:01sheets, the chili pad to sleep just
- 15:04doesn't change. Like it doesn't change
- 15:06anything.
- 15:06>> Do you think you're built different?
- 15:09>> Because the science does say that more
- 15:12sleep is better. And like when you do
- 15:14speak to like these top tier athletes,
- 15:15they're saying they're they're sleeping
- 15:17in in the morning. They're sleeping till
- 15:208 a.m. 9 a.m. or whatever. and then
- 15:23they're only doing the session first
- 15:24session kind of like mid early morning
- 15:26and then the second session later on. I
- 15:29know everyone's different but uh like a
- 15:32lot of athletes that I've spoke to said
- 15:34they don't sacrifice their sleep.
- 15:37>> I guess just it's like a listen I I'm
- 15:40not going to try to pretend like I've
- 15:41done sleep studies and then they're
- 15:43getting into this like deep deep you
- 15:46know research but my father has never
- 15:50slept.
- 15:50>> Yeah. And genetically, I may just be
- 15:52more aligned with him. My brother
- 15:54Garrett sleeps a bit more than me. My
- 15:55mom sleeps a bunch. And
- 15:58that's just it. I mean, like, I don't
- 16:00know what to say other than the fact
- 16:01that this like I remember like waking up
- 16:03when I was younger and my grandfather
- 16:04would always be up so early and I would
- 16:07wake up and I would get to the table and
- 16:08it' be pitch black and it would just be
- 16:10us. My grandfather doesn't talk a lot so
- 16:12it would just be strange like just
- 16:13sitting there just like [ __ ] And he
- 16:15would just look at his paper and I'd
- 16:17have nothing to do. And I that made such
- 16:19a deep impact on me because I would
- 16:21remember that and I was like even when I
- 16:23was younger I remember my mother would
- 16:25scold me because she'd catch me in the
- 16:27middle of the night just playing with
- 16:28Magic cards sorting all of my things
- 16:30like deeply analytically overanalyzing
- 16:33things and I'd be up the next day at
- 16:365:00 a.m. out of bed even if I went to
- 16:38bed at 2. So the reality is is like I
- 16:41just might be different. And like I can
- 16:44say based off my results, it's been
- 16:46effective.
- 16:47If I look at everything that I do with
- 16:49my career, am I going to try to gain an
- 16:51extra hour of sleep to get more seconds
- 16:52off my race time? Probably not.
- 16:55>> Yeah. Moving on to you then went into
- 16:59like tough mutter, right?
- 17:00>> Yeah. I mean, Spartan race, tough
- 17:02mutter, all that kind of stuff.
- 17:04>> All the all the kind of like otr stuff
- 17:06and then hyrox.
- 17:07>> Yeah. Yeah.
- 17:07>> Yeah. Um why
- 17:10>> why I mean you're going to have to give
- 17:11me some definition here. which one like
- 17:13why did you go into them sports? Why
- 17:15didn't you pick probably at the time
- 17:17like more popular sports should I say?
- 17:19Cuz back then like you couldn't make a
- 17:21living. You knew that you couldn't make
- 17:23a living out of being the best.
- 17:24>> Yeah. I mean listen it was a total freak
- 17:26chance. I was living here in Malibu at
- 17:28the time at 2011 with a couple of my
- 17:30friends and like I had quit the small
- 17:33attempt at being a male model and I was
- 17:36working on being a personal trainer. One
- 17:38of my friends randomly called me at the
- 17:40time was like, "We're moving to Malibu
- 17:41and we're going to get rich and famous."
- 17:42So, I just followed off his coattails
- 17:44and lived at his house. Totally random.
- 17:46Like, if he hadn't called me, I wouldn't
- 17:48be out here. So, thank you, Mo.
- 17:52When I was out here within a couple
- 17:54months of being here, we went and did a
- 17:56Spartan race and I did really well. If
- 17:58it wasn't for the fact that I went on a
- 17:59a website called active.com, I never
- 18:02would have stumbled into it.
- 18:04I was bodybuilding at the time and
- 18:06mountain running. like I was trying to
- 18:08get ripped, add to my bench, my squat,
- 18:11my deadlift, and my biceps, and I was
- 18:14just running up and down these hills.
- 18:16But other than that, like nothing was
- 18:17specific. Like nothing was intentional.
- 18:20And then I came sixth place out of
- 18:2210,000 people. And then I like went home
- 18:25and kind of like percolated on it and I
- 18:28was like, "What do I do?" And I was
- 18:29like, "What the [ __ ] is Spartan race?
- 18:31Like what is that?" So I just was like,
- 18:32"Okay, never mind."
- 18:35But then a couple months later, it just
- 18:37like kind of hit me and I was like, I
- 18:39think I can be really good at that if I
- 18:42try. And I started typing into YouTube
- 18:44and I started to see that like they were
- 18:46having championships and like you could
- 18:47win money. There was a $10,000 cash
- 18:50prize and I was like, "Yeah, I'm going
- 18:53to do that. Like, I'm going to win that.
- 18:55I'm not I didn't think at all like,
- 18:57Hunter, you should go back." Like, I was
- 18:59going to I'm like, "Who's the world
- 19:00champion?" I immediately Googled his
- 19:02name. Hobie Call. I was like, I'm gonna
- 19:04beat that dude. The next race I went to,
- 19:08I was leading the race next to Hobie
- 19:10Cole the whole way through and then I
- 19:12stepped in some mud and my shoe got
- 19:14stuck in it and I had to stop the race
- 19:16and they kept on going and I eventually
- 19:17came in third place and then like a
- 19:19month or so later I got a call from the
- 19:21CEO basically. He was like, "Do you want
- 19:24to fly down to Mexico and race for us?"
- 19:25So, it was a freak accident that I did
- 19:28it and then a random urge to want to
- 19:31beat some random guy on the internet.
- 19:33Much like you probably found Hy Rocks
- 19:35and you're like, you probably looked me
- 19:36up and you're like, I want to beat that
- 19:37guy. It's just like a young man thing to
- 19:39do. Like, he's big and tough. I want to
- 19:42beat him. And being that these sports
- 19:44are so interesting that we can all be on
- 19:46the same playing field, like your first
- 19:48day of ever doing a high rocks, you can
- 19:49run right next to me and I was the world
- 19:51champion. Like, that's pretty cool. Same
- 19:54thing for I guess marathoning in its own
- 19:56unique way, but like in triathlon like
- 19:58you can stand on the same ground as a
- 20:00world champion and it's an even playing
- 20:02field. So I didn't think like oh I have
- 20:06to qualify for the Olympics or this or
- 20:07that and like have to jump through all
- 20:09of these hoops to potentially be the
- 20:10best. I was like I just need to find out
- 20:12where he's going and show up next to him
- 20:14and run like hell. So that was
- 20:16encouraging to me because I'm not the
- 20:18kind of person who likes to dig through
- 20:20a lot of details. Especially back in the
- 20:22day, I was just rambunctious.
- 20:24But it was a three-month arc of just
- 20:28like do a race, go home, forget about
- 20:30it, think I could do it, race against
- 20:32the guy, and then a month later I had a
- 20:34sponsorship and my life changed. Like I
- 20:36was a fully paid for man within 90 days
- 20:38of starting.
- 20:39>> Who was that first sponsor?
- 20:41>> I guess I would technically say it was
- 20:43Spartan Race that started paying me and
- 20:45then shortly thereafters, Reebok was. I
- 20:47remember I went to Vegas Spartan Race in
- 20:502012 and there was a guy named Patrick.
- 20:53I hope you see this someday, Patrick. He
- 20:55kind of just stood up at the table and
- 20:57he's like, "We're really looking forward
- 20:58to sponsoring athletes, you know, such
- 21:00as you, Hunter." And he like looked at
- 21:01me and said that and I was like, "Am I
- 21:03about to get sponsored by Reebok?" And I
- 21:05had a contract and it was crazy. Like it
- 21:08was so crazy to me that I was about to
- 21:11get paid to run and I was a 22-year-old
- 21:15like degenerate and I was like what? And
- 21:19like shortly there afterwards like I had
- 21:22a dumb sponsor with Rock Tape. No
- 21:24offense to you Rock Tape. And like I
- 21:26just like I had these like sponsorships
- 21:28that at the time were so like nickel and
- 21:30dime and jokey but like I needed the
- 21:32money so like we were just doing it. I'm
- 21:34sure maybe I don't know. What was your
- 21:35first ever sponsor? first ever sponsor
- 21:37who represent
- 21:39>> that's an incredible first sponsor lucky
- 21:42but like yeah
- 21:43>> you know you could have been like
- 21:44sponsored by a teaag company like it's
- 21:46just like you know when you're first
- 21:48getting started like you were in a great
- 21:50position everything
- 21:51>> yeah you're just like [ __ ] all right how
- 21:52many tea bags you can give me and how
- 21:54much money [laughter]
- 21:55um you're just like kind of begging for
- 21:58a chance because all you need is like
- 21:59another gallon in the car to go a little
- 22:01further down the road
- 22:03>> till you get your big break and you know
- 22:05eventually I got my big break, but it
- 22:07was not easy. Like, I was broke living
- 22:10with like a bunch of guys and houses,
- 22:12living free at people's houses for a
- 22:14long time.
- 22:15>> How did you end up here in Malibu at the
- 22:17top of a hill?
- 22:19>> Well, originally there was this guy
- 22:20named Mo whose name, we nicknamed him
- 22:22Modini. He was very mysterious and very
- 22:24wealthy and he had made his money
- 22:26through stock trading and we didn't know
- 22:27it. He originally brought me out here.
- 22:30And then Malibu is one of these kind of
- 22:31places where there's everybody's rich
- 22:33and famous, but they don't portray that
- 22:35to you. Like I don't look like a rich
- 22:37and famous person. I've got short shorts
- 22:38on and a baggy like kind of like beachy
- 22:40hoodie and stuff like that. But you
- 22:42wouldn't know like unless you'd like
- 22:44knock them like that guy's a 10 time
- 22:45world champion. Like you know people
- 22:47don't wear it on their collars saying
- 22:49who they are. But everybody here is
- 22:51somebody. It's insane. And so it only
- 22:55took such a little time to like being
- 22:57here to be like introduced into just
- 22:59different circles and the next thing you
- 23:00know you get invited to a house party
- 23:02which I got invited to here and I met
- 23:04these people and I was like I've never
- 23:06seen power and wealth like this before.
- 23:08Like I want to learn. So I connected
- 23:09with them and I just I kept on just
- 23:11getting tighter with them and learning
- 23:12from them. And you just keep on wanting
- 23:15to be curious about how someone got
- 23:17there. like Larry Hamilton's my neighbor
- 23:20and he's always been such a kind guy to
- 23:21me and you just sit down and you just
- 23:23ask him a couple questions every time
- 23:25you see them and they just kind of give
- 23:26you little tidbits of information to
- 23:29breadcrumb you along the way to teach
- 23:31you about lessons of life and I'll never
- 23:33forget um Rick Rubin like the famous
- 23:36music producer taught me how to do an
- 23:37upside down kettlebell press like oddly
- 23:39enough and these people aren't here to
- 23:42just stay away from you like they'll
- 23:44they'll help you if you show up but it's
- 23:47like a very pecul peculiar community in
- 23:48the way that it's like you were telling
- 23:50me about the peculiar like aspects of
- 23:52Hollywood. How Malibu has its own thing.
- 23:54You know, people who are this famous and
- 23:56this rich have gotten here for their odd
- 23:58reasons. And I was patient. I just
- 24:01wanted to be the guy working out. And
- 24:03eventually I just was so fit. People
- 24:05always started to ask me questions. They
- 24:07were like, "Well, that's really cool.
- 24:09Like, I'm glad I told you this, but tell
- 24:10me about your race. Tell me about that
- 24:12crazy thing you just did."
- 24:13So, it became this kind of thing where I
- 24:17became this like token fit guy where
- 24:19like everyone here has six-packs and
- 24:21tries to be fit in California, but you
- 24:22know, a lot of them are fake fit and I'm
- 24:24just a [ __ ] monster. So, they're
- 24:26like, "Dude, tell me a story."
- 24:27Eventually, like I would sit down at
- 24:29these tables of people like big steakous
- 24:31or no, and they would be asking me
- 24:32stories even though they're CEO of a
- 24:34massive business because they're like,
- 24:36"You did what last weekend?" And I was
- 24:37like, "Yeah, I was in the Arctic Circle
- 24:39doing a cross-country skiing race and I
- 24:41nearly died." died and they're like,
- 24:42"What?" And they were just sitting in a
- 24:44boardroom all boring even though they're
- 24:46worth a hundred million dollars. So, it
- 24:50was a good fit. It I I became a
- 24:52curiosity for people and I was good at
- 24:55telling stories, so I think I just fit
- 24:57in. And eventually, you're here long
- 24:59enough that people start to trust you
- 25:01and they're like, "Oh, Hunter's not just
- 25:02some knucklehead athlete guy. Like, he's
- 25:04a good guy." And I've been here so long
- 25:06and I've worked my way up the chain that
- 25:07like now I'm a real Malibu dude. I'm not
- 25:09just like a part-timer. And it's a great
- 25:13community once you get into the depths
- 25:14of it.
- 25:15>> Do you think you'll always live here?
- 25:17>> I will say I mean as long as the fires
- 25:19don't push me out, which they've tried
- 25:21many times, I will always have a
- 25:24footprint in Malibu. I mean, it it built
- 25:27who I am, so I can never really turn my
- 25:29back on it.
- 25:30>> So, yeah, I'll always have something
- 25:32here.
- 25:33>> Yeah, it's a sick little place. So nice,
- 25:35so chill, so relaxed. so much different
- 25:38to LA which is obviously only just like
- 25:4040 minutes down the road.
- 25:41>> You're always welcome my friend.
- 25:42>> No, no, it's good. So, moving on to Hy
- 25:44Rocks. When did you get into Hy Rocks?
- 25:47Like when did that come around?
- 25:50>> So, I competed I was on my way to
- 25:53compete at the 2019 CrossFit Games. And
- 25:55in 2018,
- 25:57the very end of 2018, I had coffee, a
- 26:00guy named Paul, Paul Budge introduced me
- 26:04through email to the owner of Hy Rocks.
- 26:07And Hy Rocks at the point that point in
- 26:08time might as well have been like
- 26:12>> it was just it might as well have been
- 26:13like a taco truck. Like it was not even
- 26:15a real business.
- 26:17>> And no offense, like it's just a
- 26:18startup.
- 26:19>> Yeah.
- 26:19>> And they had maybe had a couple like
- 26:21truly two. and they had like a one race
- 26:26and then they just immediately
- 26:27proclaimed like a world title race and
- 26:30you know I think
- 26:32um Lucas Store had won it and like he
- 26:35came we had this coffee meeting and he
- 26:37showed up in a ridiculous suit with a
- 26:39brilliantly bright chain bracelet that
- 26:42said daddy on it and like a very tight
- 26:45Italian tie and I was like who the [ __ ]
- 26:47is this guy? Like this is the craziest
- 26:49person I'd ever met that was in the
- 26:50endurance world because all the owners
- 26:52you look at like Greg Glassman and Joe
- 26:55Desenna the owners of these like these
- 26:57emerging sports and endurance and like
- 26:59kind of hybrid [ __ ] They don't look
- 27:01like this. This guy looked out of out of
- 27:04nowhere like very odd. So I was enamored
- 27:06by him, but I just was like, "Dude, I've
- 27:08got too much going on, man. I I hope to
- 27:10see you around, but I just kept my
- 27:12distance." And by the time I did show
- 27:14up, I had competed in the CrossFit games
- 27:16in August. I competed for the first time
- 27:18in December in Miami with them in 2019.
- 27:22And I showed up and I mopped the field
- 27:25and I think I had like a 10-minute slide
- 27:26push like something crazy.
- 27:30And I had picked trail shoes thinking it
- 27:33would be helpful, but like I could not
- 27:34push the turf. It was just sliding. And
- 27:36these sleds and the tur turf back then
- 27:38were like it was just quicksand. Like it
- 27:41was just such a brutal experience.
- 27:44And once I had done that, like it was so
- 27:47hard. I the it got me like I immediately
- 27:50got bit by the bug and I I just was
- 27:53like, I'm going to keep up at this
- 27:55thing. And then COVID hit right away.
- 27:58And you know, I built this relationship
- 28:01with the owner right away where like we
- 28:04were just trying to figure out ways to
- 28:06keep this ball up in the air. And like
- 28:07when I tell you guys that this thing was
- 28:10a [ __ ] sinking, I mean like they had
- 28:12an office in New York, then they had to
- 28:14shut down the office in New York. Like
- 28:16they were trying to get this venue here
- 28:18and then it just wouldn't work out. And
- 28:19like we were going to races and there'd
- 28:21be like 400 people there.
- 28:24Like it was crickets. And like I was
- 28:26begging like for them I was working on
- 28:28behalf of just like as this liaison for
- 28:30athletes, begging athletes to come and
- 28:32compete against me like come come on
- 28:35guys, let's go. Oh, and I'd be get some
- 28:37CrossFitters. I'd get some hybrid guys.
- 28:40And like we were doing all these
- 28:42gimmicky things like the Elite 8 and
- 28:44like the Invitational, like two athletes
- 28:46versus Hunter. Like we were trying
- 28:48everything. Like we would have events
- 28:50like there's this guy named Adam von
- 28:52Rothfelder who had uh this company
- 28:54called Strong Coffee. And at the 2021
- 28:56National Championships, like there was
- 28:58so little cash prize that we put like a
- 29:00head hunter fee on top of me. Like we
- 29:03were trying everything to get some
- 29:05attention
- 29:07and it was really bad to start. I mean
- 29:09like it was great but like it was not
- 29:12promising. So I mean where we're at
- 29:15right now is a blessing, dude. It's it
- 29:18might as well be like a scratchoff
- 29:19ticket story. It's like imagine you're
- 29:20just a bum your whole life and nothing's
- 29:22working out and then one day after 20
- 29:25years of doing scratch offs you walk in
- 29:27and you just rip like a $10 million
- 29:29ticket.
- 29:30That's what this is. Like it's so random
- 29:33that this worked out because nobody gave
- 29:35a [ __ ] about this sport for like the
- 29:37first five years.
- 29:38>> Yeah. I remember first watching you when
- 29:41you broke the world record in
- 29:45>> Barcelona it was
- 29:46>> and I I watched you and witnessed that
- 29:48race and it was just insane how ahead of
- 29:50the field you were.
- 29:52>> Yeah.
- 29:52>> I think you got a 53 minute there.
- 29:54>> I think it was 54 or something but it
- 29:55was low 54. It was like 5413 or
- 29:57something like that. And it was a great
- 30:01time because it was just like so rogue.
- 30:03I also was not trying at all. And now
- 30:05it's like I'm trying very hard and like
- 30:07it seems to be like I'm like it's
- 30:09standing still. Except for this last
- 30:11year I felt like I started to come back
- 30:13up again.
- 30:14>> But it was like crazy. Like back then it
- 30:16just felt to just be something that was
- 30:19like a a part of me. But now like Hyrox
- 30:22is so all-encompassing especially with
- 30:23like the new schedule. Like it's you
- 30:25can't just be a part-time pro athlete
- 30:27now. like you have to sell your soul
- 30:30because obviously it's it's an honor to
- 30:32be at this level, but it's also like if
- 30:35you want to show up like there's other
- 30:36dogs that going to eat you out of your
- 30:38spot if you don't show up and show up
- 30:40hard.
- 30:40>> Would you say over the years you've got
- 30:42more and more serious and more and more
- 30:43kind of like locked in with training?
- 30:46>> I mean, I was always really locked in
- 30:48with training. I think the only time I
- 30:49maybe lacked with training was like kind
- 30:51of like during that COVID era where we
- 30:53kind of allowed ourselves to just
- 30:55[ __ ] around, drink a little bit more,
- 30:58take some longer time. But I mean,
- 31:01especially when I was doing Spartan
- 31:02Race, man, like there was no time to
- 31:05mess around. Like I was racing against
- 31:07literally like Olympic medalists, world
- 31:10champions,
- 31:11really, really talented athletes, and it
- 31:14was no mercy.
- 31:16And the races were so much longer and so
- 31:19much harder based on just the duration
- 31:21that like like the sandbag carry took
- 31:24one of my friends one year 39 minutes.
- 31:27Like that's more than 20 times the
- 31:30length of my sled push this year. That's
- 31:32insane.
- 31:34And like so we weren't messing around.
- 31:36But I think I think now if I really had
- 31:40to like think deeply on it, it's kind of
- 31:43messed up because like the level that
- 31:45social media and like the attention to
- 31:48detail has almost like put more pressure
- 31:51on our results, it's changed the way
- 31:53that I experience it is probably the
- 31:55best way I can put it.
- 31:57>> Yeah, I get that a little bit. Do you
- 31:59get affected by what other people put
- 32:02out online about their trading? Um,
- 32:04>> not really. Obviously, everyone in the
- 32:06Elite 15 seems to be training different
- 32:08>> differently. I don't think a lot of
- 32:10people know what they're doing. And I
- 32:12think a lot of people would point
- 32:12fingers and be like, "Hun doesn't know
- 32:14what he's doing."
- 32:15>> You know what, though? I'd I'd argue on
- 32:16your behalf, like I've seen you every
- 32:19time I've met you. You're so well
- 32:21researched. Someone just really needs to
- 32:23go and watch your podcast and go on
- 32:25YouTube, uh, go on your podcast because
- 32:27the amount of research that you do on
- 32:30every successful athlete that's ever
- 32:32been within any sport, you've researched
- 32:34them
- 32:35>> and you've read all the books and you're
- 32:37so much cleverer. This is a compliment,
- 32:39by the way, so much cleverer than you
- 32:41come across because you come across as
- 32:43this guy that's like super macho, super
- 32:45confident, but you back it up and you
- 32:47back it up with the knowledge.
- 32:50I think it's really interesting that I I
- 32:53think people want to be absorbed by the
- 32:54way that they feel about their training
- 32:56and they want to ignore realities to
- 32:59feel more confident in their reality.
- 33:01Like I've been saying this for a long
- 33:03time that I think people eat away like
- 33:05you need to have this massive variance
- 33:07in training. Like I just listened to you
- 33:08know the Kalibo guy who um won all the
- 33:11Olympic gold medals in the world uh at
- 33:13the the Winter Olympics for crosscountry
- 33:14skiing.
- 33:15>> Oh yes. Is this the guy that trains five
- 33:17days on two days off? No, that's that's
- 33:19that's a that's a ice skater. This guy
- 33:21just won. He set the mo he became the
- 33:23most winningest winter Olympic athlete
- 33:25in history. And he's a Norway athlete.
- 33:28>> And he trains 88% of his time actually
- 33:31in zone one because they did so much
- 33:33studying that they found out that if you
- 33:35start to get up into zone two, it
- 33:37cannibalizes so much of your fast twitch
- 33:39muscle fibers that it actually gets in
- 33:40the way of his high performance. And
- 33:41I've been trying to say that for years
- 33:43about the way that we go in and out of
- 33:45you're using fast twitch explosive
- 33:47muscle fibers to do something like wall
- 33:49balls and sled pushes and burpees and
- 33:51stuff like that. And people don't get it
- 33:53and they just want to get into that zone
- 33:55of threshold all the time. And I say it
- 33:57and people are like double threshold.
- 33:59And I was like okay I don't need to keep
- 34:00on bragging about my ideas because I'm
- 34:02going to let you just sink deeper into
- 34:03your own quicksand.
- 34:05But for me, I think research has been
- 34:07one of these kind of things that just
- 34:08makes me fall more in love with the
- 34:10process. Like I just try to hire a new
- 34:13coach because I want to fall more in
- 34:15love with the questioning his process
- 34:17even to substantiate my process more.
- 34:20And I'm always willing to hire a new
- 34:21coach. Like the coach I hired this year
- 34:23is probably the most Yoda level person
- 34:26I've met in my entire life. And I
- 34:28[ __ ] he would talk to me and say
- 34:30things and I would just be jaw-dropped
- 34:32and I'm like I understand almost nothing
- 34:34you're saying but I will sit by your
- 34:36side in fire, rain, windstorm, whatever
- 34:38to hear more. And it is to me like
- 34:42that's my version of a pilgrimage. Like
- 34:44I will travel far and wide to get to
- 34:46those levels of information because
- 34:48that's my level of obsession and that's
- 34:50what I think aligns me with greatness
- 34:52that I eventually have when the results
- 34:54do show up.
- 34:55>> Yeah. So, what what's your opinion on
- 34:57training for High Rocks? Like, how would
- 34:59you go about it [laughter] for, like I
- 35:01said, the the top athletes?
- 35:03>> I think that most of the athletes that
- 35:05I'm seeing right now spend so much time
- 35:07chucking around 20 lb wall balls and
- 35:10basically look like a 20 pound wall
- 35:11ball. Like, you're just a weak,
- 35:13whimsical version of a person. Like a 20
- 35:15pound wall ball, I don't think anybody's
- 35:16ever looked at and be like, "That's
- 35:17intimidating." But it's only
- 35:19intimidating because it's the end of a
- 35:21massively long race. So you either need
- 35:24to work endurance massively to a
- 35:27humongous extent to the point where what
- 35:29you're doing is basically a fraction of
- 35:31your capabilities and then you need to
- 35:33work intensities in the same exact way.
- 35:36So why throw a 20 pound one ball when
- 35:38you should be really throwing like a 30
- 35:39and building the same muscle powers and
- 35:41intensities at a higher level because
- 35:43you have the capacity which you need to
- 35:45ultimately build and it's what I call as
- 35:47bookend training. It's like you need to
- 35:49be massively strong and massively fit
- 35:51and then what happens between should be
- 35:54ultimately successful because you're so
- 35:56strong on each side and like there's
- 35:59some girl who just like got into high
- 36:01rocks who won the age group world
- 36:02championship and she's like a cross
- 36:04country runner and she almost did none
- 36:06of the cross country move like the high
- 36:08rocks movements and she just dominated
- 36:09because she's so fit and that Alyssa
- 36:12girl is very similar. She hasn't even
- 36:14had the time to train like we do. Like
- 36:16if we've been doing wall balls for 5
- 36:17years, we should be better than her.
- 36:19Guess what? She mopped the field because
- 36:21she is so fit. Her her brick over here,
- 36:24like this big brick wall of running
- 36:25capabilities, is like the [ __ ] Great
- 36:27Wall of China compared to anybody else
- 36:29in the sport where like most of these
- 36:31girls are like little white picket
- 36:33fences. They're just not that developed.
- 36:36And I think so many people just try to
- 36:38[ __ ] be everywhere rather than
- 36:40somewhere really well. And I own a
- 36:44coaching program where we coach
- 36:45thousands of athletes and it's so
- 36:47difficult to tell these people this
- 36:48because they just want to feel validated
- 36:50and more sweaty and just [ __ ] dig
- 36:53their shitty bodies into the turf more
- 36:55and just grind into a sled. And I was
- 36:58like, "We should probably just work on
- 36:59your back squat because you'll be a lot
- 37:01stronger and not always feel so
- 37:03exhausted by the time you push the sled
- 37:04because your legs are actually finally
- 37:06tough." But you say that and they're
- 37:07like, "No." And it's crazy. So, I mean,
- 37:12like I know I just got on a bit of a
- 37:14tangent, but I just don't even think
- 37:15people have the bandwidth to even
- 37:17understand what I'm starting to say. So,
- 37:19almost you have to just like sit there
- 37:21and like lie to people the same way you
- 37:22know you lie to your child about Santa
- 37:24Claus. Like those trees under the table
- 37:27or Christmas tree, you're like that's
- 37:28from Santa,
- 37:30you know? And you play this little game
- 37:32with them and you know, ultimately if
- 37:34you told them the truth, they would just
- 37:36be kind of crushed. It's like I ride my
- 37:39bike 15 hours a week in the off season
- 37:42and like why don't you do more ski? I'm
- 37:44like because it doesn't matter if I
- 37:47skied for 10 hours a week.
- 37:49>> Have you ever done much ski? Because
- 37:51you're the by far one of the strongest
- 37:53in the field at the ski. Have you ever
- 37:54done a lot of it? It
- 37:56>> doesn't matter, dude. If I did 10 hours
- 37:58a week on the ski urg, I'd maybe move
- 38:00the needle by 3 seconds per 500. And why
- 38:03does that matter? where if I I worked on
- 38:06my sled push this year and I dropped a
- 38:08139, four sled lengths unbroken. If I
- 38:10had to really think about the the the
- 38:12execution of it was probably not that
- 38:13smart. I could have taken some breaks
- 38:14and it would have helped me out back and
- 38:16I didn't have to carry the fatigue
- 38:17through the whole race. But I learned
- 38:19that lesson and that that instead of
- 38:22like a 220 sled push, I could have done
- 38:24like a maybe a a 150 and saved that
- 38:27extra 10 seconds and that's a 30 second
- 38:29variance rather than a five to six
- 38:31second. and those kind of things that
- 38:34people just don't get it. It's like you
- 38:35got to learn where to make your move and
- 38:37what to invest your time in. And I think
- 38:40a lot of people it's like why focus on
- 38:42skier? People are like your form shitty.
- 38:43I'm like I don't care. Like what does
- 38:46that matter? Like I just am using I'm
- 38:48getting through it. And like I don't
- 38:50think me working on my ski form
- 38:52massively is going to change anything
- 38:54because it's never has. When you look at
- 38:56yourself and the rest of the Elite 15,
- 38:59the one thing that I notice is you're a
- 39:01lot bigger.
- 39:02>> Yeah.
- 39:03>> Do you think that's the way to go or do
- 39:06you think that's just yourself? Whereas
- 39:08I feel like the rest of the pack,
- 39:10they're actually getting smaller. It
- 39:12almost seems like
- 39:14>> I mean, listen, dude, everybody's going
- 39:15to have different kinds of skills like
- 39:17and it's going to help them. Like you
- 39:19think about somebody like a Luke Greer,
- 39:21like that guy is a bean pole. He doesn't
- 39:24fill a shirt out well. Um, not a lot of
- 39:26people are going to chase him at a
- 39:27nightclub, but he runs. Like I ran next
- 39:30to him at World Championships and I was
- 39:32like, "Oh, fuck." Like, there he goes.
- 39:35>> He's so relaxed when he runs.
- 39:36>> Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Like it
- 39:37was very much like he just was like
- 39:39almost like a yo-yo. He just like kind
- 39:40of threw it out there when he decided to
- 39:42want to make a move. And I was like,
- 39:43"Yep, that's his thing." But then I saw
- 39:45him in other places and he just folded
- 39:47>> and he doesn't have to be me and I don't
- 39:49have to be him. So, the thing is is
- 39:52like, yeah, if you're like a 10-year
- 39:54professional runner,
- 39:56use that strength for sure, but don't
- 39:59ignore the fact that you're gonna have
- 40:00to get stronger. Like, I'm sure he's
- 40:02working on wall balls and strength right
- 40:04now.
- 40:04>> Yeah.
- 40:05>> Makes a lot of sense. If he's not, it'd
- 40:06be dumb. But, you know, if I look at
- 40:09somebody like middle of the road like
- 40:11you, like you've clearly worked your
- 40:12marathon so well. Like, that's going to
- 40:14be in your tank forever because you're
- 40:16now like a 220 marathoner. But, you
- 40:20know, you you probably have some things
- 40:22you can work on.
- 40:22>> Yeah. Strength being one.
- 40:24>> Yeah. Exactly. And if your people in
- 40:25your team are not being honest with you,
- 40:28you know, when I sat down with my coach,
- 40:32he was so honest with me. He's like,
- 40:33"We're not going to do almost any really
- 40:35hard running. Doesn't matter for you."
- 40:37And I was like, "Really?" Like, I wanted
- 40:39to go to the track so bad. He was like,
- 40:40"No, we're just going to take a 100
- 40:42pound wall ball and you're going to do
- 40:44it for five minutes every single day,
- 40:47twice a day for the next two months."
- 40:49And we had some other things working on
- 40:50there, but I remember him telling me
- 40:51that and I was like, "That's the dumbest
- 40:53thing I've ever heard."
- 40:54>> How heavy?
- 40:55>> 100 pounds.
- 40:55>> 100 pounds. So,
- 40:58>> five times the size of the bowl that we
- 41:00used.
- 41:00>> 45 kg weight. Yeah.
- 41:03>> And it [ __ ] paid off, dude. I was a
- 41:05titan. I was a freakish titan. You just
- 41:08did max reps for five minutes to
- 41:10>> and I got up to I think 65
- 41:13>> and so just over 10 a minute.
- 41:16>> And to me I thought it was really dumb
- 41:19and I had to like go through this like
- 41:20emotional phase of being like I [ __ ]
- 41:22hate this guy. He doesn't know what he's
- 41:23talking about to like the aha moment
- 41:25when it hit. And like a really good
- 41:28coach
- 41:30can do that. And like even the reason
- 41:32why I hire coaches is because I I will
- 41:34pick the comfortable lane. Like I'm a
- 41:36hard man, but like we all have our
- 41:38versions of like wanting to pick the
- 41:39easy route and we will. And sometimes
- 41:42someone needs to look at you and tell
- 41:44you raw. It's like, "Hey man, like drop
- 41:46the shoes." Like we need to keep you in
- 41:47the gym, you know, put away the carbons.
- 41:50And that might be your thing, man. You
- 41:52need people to be able to hold you
- 41:53accountable. And he really helped me
- 41:54out. So thank you, Coach Cal. But um I I
- 41:57think that the this is an emerging
- 42:00sport, but strength and conditioning is
- 42:02not new. Like if you guys really want to
- 42:04learn about strength and conditioning,
- 42:05go buy one of the Soviet training like
- 42:07like manuals from like 1970 and it will
- 42:10teach you more than any like of these
- 42:13six-pack [ __ ] boys on the internet. And
- 42:16I think the thing is is like, dude, you
- 42:17have like 600,000 followers. I respect
- 42:19everything you do, but I would go to
- 42:21that manual before you every single
- 42:23time.
- 42:23>> No offense%.
- 42:24>> No, I would as well. But it's one of
- 42:26these kind of things where it's like
- 42:28you've been like these are the most
- 42:30substantial bits of information
- 42:32out there. And I think people don't want
- 42:34to just pick it up. They're like I'd
- 42:36rather just scroll on my phone and see
- 42:38what like an inspiring person did. And
- 42:40that's part of the puzzle, but the
- 42:43reality is is like you can't avoid the
- 42:45truth that's inside of those books that
- 42:46are all littered all over my house.
- 42:48>> Yeah. It's so interesting that when you
- 42:50look back at in them books and you see
- 42:53all the things that are coming into
- 42:56fashion now,
- 42:57>> yeah,
- 42:57>> were done in the 70s, whether it is
- 42:59training, fashion training, heat
- 43:01training and all that stuff.
- 43:03>> It was all done back then. Pometrics,
- 43:05like everyone's kind of like reinventing
- 43:06the wheel.
- 43:07>> Yeah.
- 43:08>> These people wanted to win really,
- 43:10really bad. like the most the most like
- 43:12the people that are doing like the
- 43:13doping and things like that, they used
- 43:16every method to the their capability
- 43:18that maxed out their potential and then
- 43:19they started doping. And the people that
- 43:21did that the best were the Soviets in
- 43:24the Eastern block countries. They
- 43:26cheated like [ __ ] crazy. But before
- 43:28that, they learned everything they could
- 43:30about the physical capacity of the human
- 43:32body that was allowed through just its
- 43:35own potential before enhanced potential
- 43:38and they went all in. That's crazy.
- 43:40>> Yeah.
- 43:41>> What's about uh obviously this season,
- 43:43this uh last World Champs?
- 43:46>> Yeah.
- 43:47>> Uh now that you've had a couple of
- 43:48months to kind of like think about it
- 43:50and stuff like that, what's what's your
- 43:52feelings on it?
- 43:53>> It was really hard, dude. Like if I'm
- 43:55being honest with you, like I I I closed
- 43:58my brain off to that for months. Like
- 44:01literally for two months. the other
- 44:02night, if I'm being real with you, um
- 44:05this would be like odd for a lot of
- 44:06people to hear, but I ended up having to
- 44:09eat a lot of mushrooms and sit right out
- 44:11here and completely unpack it because I
- 44:14was ignoring it for such a long time.
- 44:16And I've used things like this for my
- 44:18whole career to just go on these
- 44:20versions of like a journey in your mind.
- 44:23And it was a real battle. like I was
- 44:25really ignoring it because in my mind
- 44:28and a lot of people may disagree with
- 44:30this or you may support it.
- 44:34That's not my world to live in because I
- 44:36have to live with myself and my
- 44:38decisions.
- 44:40The
- 44:41ultimate outcome that I came with was
- 44:43that yes, I felt things were unfairly
- 44:47done upon me. But my biggest problem was
- 44:50that if I'm really going to be the
- 44:52Hunter McIntyre that I believe that I
- 44:54am, as I can leave no wiggle room for
- 44:56doubt, even with the biggest hater with
- 44:58a microscope on me, and I had one of
- 45:01those on my back the whole race, it was
- 45:03very hard to deal with in the race. I
- 45:05was literally talking to her for such a
- 45:07large portion of the race. Like clock
- 45:09time, it was well over 30 seconds of me
- 45:11just talking to this woman while trying
- 45:13to go max effort and just like figure
- 45:16out why she was doing what she was
- 45:18doing.
- 45:19And I came out of that with like a lot
- 45:21of hate for the whole sports inability
- 45:24to just do their job.
- 45:28And I never got into sport to pick
- 45:30fights with the people who created the
- 45:34sport, the judges. I just want to be an
- 45:37athlete. And that's where like I was
- 45:39like, as I said, it was very difficult
- 45:41for me because I didn't feel like I got
- 45:42to have that on that day. But
- 45:45ultimately, my outcome was that I
- 45:49I am better than those results. Like I'm
- 45:52not defined as a fifth place guy. like I
- 45:55came out there with such incredible
- 45:56fitness and such incredible shape and
- 45:59that to me is the most beautiful thing.
- 46:01I painted a masterpiece and just because
- 46:03it didn't get all the lighting to be
- 46:05seen fully like I can't be upset. Like
- 46:07part of the journey is painting the
- 46:09masterpiece. It's not unveiling it. And
- 46:12for me I'm in love with the process of
- 46:14being an athlete. I think everybody who
- 46:16is watching this as an athlete has to
- 46:18live from that place first because
- 46:20there's no paycheck that's ever defined
- 46:22me in reality. the money will be spent.
- 46:25There's no sponsor that's ever defined
- 46:27me. But if you go into most rooms and
- 46:31ask about Hunter McIntyre, they're not
- 46:32like, "Oh, Hunter McIntyre the Puma
- 46:33athlete or Hunter McIntyre the High
- 46:35Rocks athlete." They're like, "That's a
- 46:36hard [ __ ] man."
- 46:39That's because that's who I am. That's a
- 46:41I live as like that's what I will
- 46:44continue to be when these races end for
- 46:47me. So, as long as I continue to move
- 46:51forward from that place, I always win
- 46:53because that's ultimately what I choose
- 46:55every single day regardless of the
- 46:56finish line or wherever I finish.
- 46:59>> In that race, you led for the majority
- 47:02of the race.
- 47:02>> Yeah.
- 47:03>> And it was iconic.
- 47:05>> You you was there like your one bigger,
- 47:08fitter, stronger than everyone else,
- 47:10running at the front and I think the the
- 47:12whole Hierrox world were like, "Fuck
- 47:14yeah, Hunter's back."
- 47:16>> Yeah, that was rough, dude. I appreciate
- 47:18you saying that. I mean, the reality is,
- 47:21man, it's like that was me. I was on
- 47:24that wave that I talk about a lot. When
- 47:26you come into full alignment as an
- 47:27athlete, you're ultimately riding a
- 47:29wave.
- 47:31You are in this level of a zone where
- 47:33there's no resistance and you're able to
- 47:36play with it. That's what surfing is.
- 47:38Once you get up on the wave, you're just
- 47:40playing with the energy and you're
- 47:42traveling forward and you're able to
- 47:44just show who you are through this free
- 47:47energy propelling you forward. At no
- 47:50point in time did I feel like I was
- 47:52really hurting. Where the disruption
- 47:55came in is someone was just talking to
- 47:56me and saying and I was just like,
- 47:58"Well, dude, I'm on my wave." And it was
- 48:00like and I was like, "Holy shit."
- 48:04But that's what we're really all looking
- 48:06for. I think if you've watched almost
- 48:09all of these people like the Josh Kerr
- 48:11winning the mile, you knew he was in
- 48:13that flow state because you're like, how
- 48:15is he going so fast? It's like, well,
- 48:17he's not fighting it. He's flowing
- 48:19through it. He's moving through time and
- 48:21space in a way that the body has never
- 48:24really been able to reach before. But
- 48:25that's what a world record looks like.
- 48:27That's what a world title looks like. Is
- 48:30somebody who's able to move through time
- 48:31and space as an athlete in a way that's
- 48:34never been seen before. It's this free
- 48:37collection of energy of everything
- 48:38around you, everything that's inside of
- 48:40you and it's all in sync in time.
- 48:43>> How do you harness that?
- 48:46>> I mean, I think it's it's like a
- 48:47four-leaf clover. Like, you can't really
- 48:49ask for it and it shows up. That's why,
- 48:52like, admittedly, Josh, don't be
- 48:53insulted by this. I didn't think he was
- 48:55going to get it because I think it's so
- 48:56rare to make a statement and actually
- 48:58have it happen on the day that you say
- 48:59it's going to happen on. That's what's
- 49:02so beautiful when it does show up
- 49:04because the reality is is that I'm I'm
- 49:06assuming every single clover has the
- 49:08potential of being a four-leaf clover,
- 49:10but it's only when it this one moment in
- 49:12time where the gene fully unlocks itself
- 49:14where all four petals pop. So, we all
- 49:18have it with inside of us ultimately,
- 49:20but the thing is is that, you know, you
- 49:22have to be strong and prepared for when
- 49:24it's time to shine. That's what we all
- 49:26have to do as athletes. But we can't
- 49:28ever fully promise ourselves when that
- 49:30day is going to show up. We ask for it.
- 49:32We want it. We dream of it. We anxiously
- 49:35pray,
- 49:37but I've been there so many times that
- 49:38it's not always there. I've only really
- 49:40had that moment happen in my life
- 49:42probably two, three times. And like
- 49:45maybe 2023 World Championships was
- 49:47there.
- 49:48>> That was Manchester.
- 49:49>> Yeah. It was crazy watching I was there
- 49:51watching you like you was you know you
- 49:53was put putting your arms up in the air
- 49:56>> and you know you're in that state like I
- 49:58didn't have to think about that my body
- 49:59naturally was doing that and there's all
- 50:01of these things where I'm sure you've
- 50:03watched like like a you ever seen a car
- 50:05guitar solo like these people didn't
- 50:08practice this they are just in free flow
- 50:10like I was watching Prince the other day
- 50:12at this guitar solo and when he was this
- 50:15song my guitar gently weeps and he was
- 50:17playing and you could tell that He had
- 50:19not predicted anything in front of him.
- 50:20It was just coming through him. And all
- 50:23of us at these expert levels have this
- 50:26state. And that's why it's so cool to
- 50:30witness it. And that's why I think
- 50:31sport's so awesome because it's one of
- 50:33the very few physical arts where you can
- 50:36see the masterpiece unfold in front of
- 50:38you. And like that's why I'm still in
- 50:40it. I'm 37 years old. I've won enough
- 50:42world titles. If I was not getting
- 50:45better, I would stop. But I I that day I
- 50:48felt it. I was like, "This is it. That's
- 50:50that that perfect wave. I'm on it right
- 50:52now." So, godamn, man. Like, if you guys
- 50:56are watching this and you have these
- 50:58ambitions, like, I pray that you get
- 51:01that wave. You catch your wave someday
- 51:03because it's excellent once you're in
- 51:05it.
- 51:05>> What gives you the confidence?
- 51:09I was having a really interesting
- 51:11conversation with somebody who is a
- 51:12really big person I've looked up for
- 51:14many years today. And he was asking why
- 51:16I was ready for the project that we've
- 51:19just been filming recently. And I said
- 51:22to him is that I always envision the
- 51:25person at the end. I never envision the
- 51:27person at the beginning or the middle
- 51:28because those are not what you want to
- 51:30be. Like when you begin a journey,
- 51:31you're never fully proud of yourself
- 51:33because you're like you're hoping to
- 51:34become this. I want to be a world
- 51:36champion because at the start line,
- 51:37you're not a world champion. you're
- 51:38hoping to be in the middle of the race.
- 51:40You're not a world champion. You're
- 51:42hoping to be. I visualize entirely and I
- 51:45I work so heavily on it to
- 51:49envision what I ultimately know I can
- 51:52become. That four-leaf clover, that
- 51:54unlocked power that we all have within
- 51:55us. I'm like, why would I ever dream and
- 51:57just accept the fact of being a
- 51:59threeleaf clover when I know that I have
- 52:00the potential of four? So, I close my
- 52:02eyes and I see it. I visualize it. I
- 52:05live it every single day with prayers,
- 52:09statements. I mean, every single night,
- 52:12dude, for thousands of days, I have
- 52:14closed my eyes and I've said a prayer. I
- 52:18really have. And I just I don't say a
- 52:21prayer like I hope to be a world
- 52:22champion. I'm like, God, I'm so grateful
- 52:24that you gave me this this opportunity,
- 52:26and I'm going to ride the [ __ ] out of it
- 52:28tomorrow. And I'm just grateful that my
- 52:30legs are healthy, my mind is healthy,
- 52:31and I'm just going to show up, man. And
- 52:33if I get it, I'm grateful. but thanks
- 52:35for giving me the chance every night in
- 52:38some way, shape or form. And like if you
- 52:40live in that place, ultimately you're
- 52:42never going to lose because you're
- 52:43living in a level of half glass full
- 52:45kind of thing. Optimism. But for me,
- 52:48maybe God just gave me a little extra
- 52:50juju because I usually make it happen.
- 52:52It just [ __ ] happens, dude. I've
- 52:54heard uh I remember having a
- 52:56conversation with you and sometimes you
- 52:58use kind of like alter egos
- 53:01uh to your power and you kind of like
- 53:03create characters for yourself.
- 53:05>> Yeah.
- 53:06>> What about it? [laughter]
- 53:08>> Do you think uh do you think that gives
- 53:10you like a bigger confidence or do you
- 53:14think that's just something to keep you
- 53:16not bored?
- 53:17>> I mean it's a mixture of it but if you
- 53:19did you see the Hulk Hogan documentary?
- 53:21>> No. No.
- 53:22>> It's amazing.
- 53:24you have to watch, dude, because I mean,
- 53:26you watch that and
- 53:28>> basically he's a Broadway guy. Like,
- 53:30he's a he's somebody who's up on stage,
- 53:32>> but when you watch it, you watch him
- 53:35take over the world through the
- 53:37capability of capturing people's minds
- 53:40and getting them to believe in something
- 53:41that's not truly real. And that's very
- 53:44similar for my position. His name is
- 53:46Terry, but everyone in the world knows
- 53:49him as Hulk Hogan.
- 53:51I'm just Hunter, but I'm not just
- 53:52Hunter. I'm [ __ ] Hunter McIntyre.
- 53:54Like, and I every time I say it, like it
- 53:58hits with gusto, like a bunch of fists.
- 54:00Like, I don't drive regular cars. I
- 54:02drive cars with [ __ ] huge engines
- 54:04that are allowed. Because every time I
- 54:06step into something, I want to step into
- 54:08the belief that I am something so much
- 54:10more than just a regular person. And I'm
- 54:13not doing it because I I feel lame. I
- 54:15just I do it because I believe. And
- 54:19Terry made the whole world believe that
- 54:22he was Hulk Hogan the biggest and
- 54:25baddest man on the planet. And when you
- 54:28watch this just a basic ass man taking
- 54:30over the planet, which he did, it's a
- 54:33very similar situation. It's like you
- 54:35just got to kind of get into these
- 54:37zones. And nobody else was telling him
- 54:39he was Hulk Hogan. He had to get the
- 54:41world to believe it. So I I much in the
- 54:43same way do the same. I just I'm like,
- 54:45[ __ ] dude. you're just the biggest, the
- 54:47baddest. And I remember I started to
- 54:50pick it up when I was in high school
- 54:51during cross country. And I would just
- 54:53be there on the start line in the middle
- 54:55of the races just chanting it in my head
- 54:57and I would just finish first and I was
- 54:59like, "Oh [ __ ] I guess that worked."
- 55:01And it just became second nature.
- 55:03>> So like envisioning it and believing in
- 55:06it is how powerful is that?
- 55:09>> Infinitely. Infinitely. There's this
- 55:12really interesting book called Trans
- 55:14Surfing, which I'm going to try to like
- 55:16paraphrase in so such a small way, but
- 55:20largely in this book and many other
- 55:22books, they found out that through just
- 55:25ways of positioning your mind into
- 55:28alternate realities,
- 55:30it it can come true. It really has the
- 55:33possibility, if not entirely, just
- 55:35happening.
- 55:36And like Hunter McIntyre could have been
- 55:39a guy who, you know, licked envelopes
- 55:43and worked in an office all day long. Or
- 55:45Hunter McIntyre could have been a
- 55:4610-time world champion. Or Hunter
- 55:48McIntyre could have been, you know, a
- 55:50Navy Seal. Like, you know, I could have
- 55:52been any of those things. But you
- 55:54ultimately just have to put your mind to
- 55:55that idea and just live it every single
- 55:58day until it just happens.
- 56:01It it has happened. I mean, dude, I
- 56:03could quit everything that I'm doing
- 56:04right now and probably run a Fortune 500
- 56:06company. It just happens. And I don't
- 56:09say that with like braggadociously. I
- 56:11just say it because like I just watched
- 56:13it happen for myself so many times.
- 56:16I'm not really scared to say it because
- 56:17like if it didn't work out, I'm like
- 56:20whatever, at least I tried and I can
- 56:22always fall back on that.
- 56:26>> I love that. I really do. What's uh
- 56:29what's next? Obviously, you've been in
- 56:33Hierrox now for a long time. Are you
- 56:35going to continue with Hierrox and
- 56:38competing at the top level?
- 56:41I think for me right now, I still have
- 56:43to sit with myself a bit longer. I woke
- 56:46up the other day like knowing full well
- 56:50that that's like what I want.
- 56:53But I have to do it the right way
- 56:55because if you don't buy into your story
- 56:57much like we were just talking about
- 56:58like you're just not like if you won't
- 57:00flip through the own pages of your own
- 57:01book then like just don't don't do it.
- 57:04So I'm trying to come back with a reason
- 57:06and a why and a how
- 57:09I will execute.
- 57:11And I guess my biggest goal in life
- 57:14right now is to see this mission through
- 57:19fully, but also kind of lane this plane
- 57:22that I've been talking about for such a
- 57:23long time, which is my athletic career,
- 57:26and go into this more mentor and
- 57:29mediabased role towards life. And I
- 57:32believe in this this whole arc of travel
- 57:35through people's lives, which is called
- 57:36the pupil, the warrior, the master, and
- 57:38the guru.
- 57:40A pupil is just this very raw person
- 57:42who's always absorbing information,
- 57:44doesn't really have any substantiated
- 57:46ideas. A warrior gets into this idea of
- 57:49like, I want to become a doctor or I
- 57:51want to become an athlete. Like you're
- 57:53out there in the world like actively
- 57:54charging and just going after your goals
- 57:57and fighting against your anything that
- 57:59gets in your way. Some people are weaker
- 58:01warriors than others, but like ideally
- 58:03you're this person that's attacking what
- 58:04you want. And then eventually you've
- 58:07gone through so much of that that you've
- 58:08learned so much from that world that you
- 58:10kind of pull back and you become more of
- 58:12a advisor role that master status where
- 58:15you're advising people who are going
- 58:16through the same path and eventually you
- 58:19end up in a guru role where you don't
- 58:21really have to actively pursue anything
- 58:23whether it be attacking advising now
- 58:27you're just existing and that somehow
- 58:29resonates and creates even more
- 58:30alignment with everything that you're in
- 58:33and
- 58:34I can feel very much so that I'm
- 58:36switching more into that master phase.
- 58:38My physical body is losing its grip on
- 58:42the ground and I can feel the energy in
- 58:44my body kind of traveling up from my
- 58:45legs and my chest and my arms much more
- 58:48and living in my brain every single day.
- 58:50And I've always been a very like brainy
- 58:52kind of guy, but I can feel it like
- 58:54stronger than ever. So, I never will do
- 58:58anything at even 99% like I need to do
- 59:00it 100%. So, I haven't decided if I'm
- 59:03going to attack it again just yet
- 59:05because unless I can say that with
- 59:07absolution, I'm not going to get
- 59:08started.
- 59:09>> Yeah, I think you'd be uh great going
- 59:12into that next phase. Obviously, like
- 59:14you say, I feel like you you could if
- 59:15you wanted to extend your athletic
- 59:17career for the next, you know, five
- 59:19years in and still be at the top of
- 59:21rocks in my opinion. Y
- 59:23>> but I think transitioning to what you
- 59:26want to do and what you want to achieve
- 59:28like ultimately is uh is the most
- 59:31important thing. And I think you'd be
- 59:33great at it though. I think you being
- 59:34like any kind of like well just how well
- 59:37you spoke on this like it you're such a
- 59:39great commentator. You're funny. You're
- 59:42comedic. You're uh you're a great
- 59:44storyteller.
- 59:45>> Appreciate that, dude.
- 59:46>> Yeah, that's sick. So, what
- 59:50is next with kind of like I know you've
- 59:54mentioned sometimes uh that you want to
- 59:56start a family and stuff like that. Is
- 59:58that part of it as well?
- 1:00:00>> Yeah, dude. I think about the family
- 1:00:02aspect of it so much. Like it's crazy
- 1:00:04how important my family has been to me,
- 1:00:06but because of this lifestyle, it's so
- 1:00:08hard. like it's I'm so happy for you
- 1:00:10found a rockstar girl that's been able
- 1:00:12to like it seems almost seamlessly
- 1:00:15continue to travel with you and be a
- 1:00:17part of all this but that's been very
- 1:00:19complicated for me to try to create
- 1:00:21because I admittedly I I am pretty crazy
- 1:00:24and I'm so extreme about my decisions
- 1:00:26that I could be here and then tomorrow I
- 1:00:29could be in a different country and to
- 1:00:30have somebody alongside of you that's
- 1:00:32like really confidently there and feels
- 1:00:34that they're safe and resonate with the
- 1:00:36same ideas is is hard to find. So,
- 1:00:39congrats. I'm happy for you.
- 1:00:41>> But I'm getting closer. I found some
- 1:00:43really excellent girls. I've had so many
- 1:00:45great girlfriends in my life. But I
- 1:00:46think timing has been such a big e issue
- 1:00:48for me because I haven't felt fully
- 1:00:51comfortable in letting go. But much like
- 1:00:54I said, I'm moving into that next phase,
- 1:00:55dude. Like, I'm so close. I think it's
- 1:00:57going to happen like snap of the
- 1:00:58fingers. Like, I'm going to get with a
- 1:01:01girl and it's not going to be like
- 1:01:04hours, minutes, days. It's going to be
- 1:01:05like seconds and like next thing you
- 1:01:07know you're just going to see a kid pop
- 1:01:09out.
- 1:01:10>> Yeah. Little hunters walking around.
- 1:01:11>> And I'm not stopping at like one, dude.
- 1:01:13I'm getting like an army of those
- 1:01:14things. I think that's really important
- 1:01:16to me is like I've always, if you've
- 1:01:17noticed, like traveled and had like
- 1:01:19training camps. I want to have a
- 1:01:21permanent training camp in my life. Just
- 1:01:23a monster pack of just bros, little
- 1:01:25boys. I'll probably have one girl just
- 1:01:27because I'll be cursed. But the reality
- 1:01:30is is like that's something I think
- 1:01:32about so much and I'm nervous. But I
- 1:01:34think everything that I'm nervous about
- 1:01:36is the best thing for me in life to
- 1:01:38attack.
- 1:01:39>> What advice would you give to people
- 1:01:40that are
- 1:01:43on that path? Like you mentioned before,
- 1:01:45there's the pupil, there's the warrior,
- 1:01:46like probably in between that kind of
- 1:01:49transition, a young hunter. What would
- 1:01:52advice would you give?
- 1:01:54>> I think the most important thing that
- 1:01:55I've recognized through this entire arc
- 1:01:57of life is that you cannot rush the
- 1:01:59process and everything is ultimately a
- 1:02:01lesson. Like I've gotten my ass kicked
- 1:02:03in so many different ways. As soon as I
- 1:02:05got into business, like I'm just getting
- 1:02:07wrecked all the time. But the thing is
- 1:02:09is like you're losing, but that is
- 1:02:12ultimately setting the foundation for
- 1:02:14your wins. And I'm so much more
- 1:02:16successful in business now than I
- 1:02:17started because I just didn't quit. I
- 1:02:20think so many people want this instant
- 1:02:22gratification of just like feeling
- 1:02:24validated with a win. But in reality,
- 1:02:27like feel validated by the consistency
- 1:02:29of the journey. like change the way that
- 1:02:32you define success. I look at people
- 1:02:35that are just consistent and I'm like
- 1:02:37that's badass. That person is steadfast.
- 1:02:41Like you can't just let a gust of wind
- 1:02:43come in and change your opinion and your
- 1:02:44emotions about life.
- 1:02:47It is exactly that path. You can't just
- 1:02:50go from pupil to like master or guru
- 1:02:53status. And I think so many people want
- 1:02:54to these days. Like I did one Hy Rocks
- 1:02:56and now I am an elite Hy Rocks coach.
- 1:02:58And I'm like no you're not. you're an
- 1:03:00idiot. You're an idiot like the rest of
- 1:03:02us and you need to sit there with it and
- 1:03:04just accept it and you don't need to
- 1:03:05paint a picture that you're not like you
- 1:03:07just you're not that person. Just be
- 1:03:08cool. Be cool with being a novice and
- 1:03:11being raw. I had to be with business. I
- 1:03:14had to be in so many different facets.
- 1:03:15And it's not meant to be like get in
- 1:03:17your face and make you feel bad when I
- 1:03:19say that, but more so just start to
- 1:03:20accept that and you'll resonate with it
- 1:03:22a lot more and you'll be more successful
- 1:03:23in that position. and the path will be
- 1:03:25more direct and authentic when you get
- 1:03:27there as you're on the path. So, and
- 1:03:31also just like don't [ __ ] be scared.
- 1:03:33Like everybody's opinions mean [ __ ]
- 1:03:36these days. Like everybody I've noticed
- 1:03:39that has ever given me an opposing
- 1:03:40opinion in life will say it on a phone
- 1:03:42via a post, a text, and then I see them
- 1:03:45face to face and they are shivering when
- 1:03:47they see me because they cannot even
- 1:03:50fully align themselves with their words
- 1:03:52because they're just not that person.
- 1:03:54Everybody's tougher and taller in their
- 1:03:56text messages and posts. Nobody's got
- 1:03:59the [ __ ] spine of a lion. And the
- 1:04:01reality is is to let yourself be swayed
- 1:04:04by these kitty cat human beings is just
- 1:04:06such a sad way to live. Like never let
- 1:04:09your goals, your opinions, or anything
- 1:04:12be pushed around by those you wouldn't
- 1:04:14sit at a table with confidently. Like
- 1:04:17it's just so odd. The world is so weird.
- 1:04:19And
- 1:04:21to me, I am only here in the place that
- 1:04:26I'm in right now because I just never
- 1:04:28was willing to accept anything anyone
- 1:04:30ever told me unless I said it to myself.
- 1:04:34And if when I say it to myself, then I
- 1:04:37can start accepting it. But any nobody
- 1:04:39else can paint me as something different
- 1:04:41than I am. And as soon as you can align
- 1:04:44with that confidently, man, like your
- 1:04:46life is free. you can let go of all of
- 1:04:49the angst, all of the pressure, and at
- 1:04:52that point, you're on that wave I was
- 1:04:53telling you about, and you own it. It's
- 1:04:55free energy. So, I live in that moment
- 1:04:58every single day. It's not always easy,
- 1:05:01but I'm always waiting to catch the next
- 1:05:03wave on my terms.
- 1:05:05And then last thing I want to touch on
- 1:05:07because I think this is so important
- 1:05:09coming from you especially, your
- 1:05:11nutrition.
- 1:05:12>> Yeah. What about it?
- 1:05:15You eat like an athlete and I want you
- 1:05:18to explain what that actually means.
- 1:05:22[sighs]
- 1:05:25It is difficult for me to
- 1:05:29say this without insulting so many
- 1:05:31people. So, I'm just going to start by
- 1:05:33saying if you hear this and it insults
- 1:05:35you, then
- 1:05:37whatever. Shut this thing off.
- 1:05:42Don't look at food as food. Look at it
- 1:05:45as fuel. When I go to a gas pump,
- 1:05:48there's only three options. And I just
- 1:05:51have to fill up the tank. And if you're
- 1:05:53a high performance vehicle, you just
- 1:05:55need to [ __ ] fill that tank up over
- 1:05:58and over and over again. And you don't
- 1:06:00look at the color of the food. You don't
- 1:06:02look at the diet. Does it align with
- 1:06:04your veganism or any of these things?
- 1:06:06Because in reality, most of the people
- 1:06:08are undereing and underachieving with
- 1:06:11their entirety of their athletic life.
- 1:06:13And once I found out that basically
- 1:06:15sugar is the answer to almost
- 1:06:17everybody's problems, I just started
- 1:06:19pouring it on everything. I mean, dude,
- 1:06:22if you go into my my house right now,
- 1:06:24there is only milk, sugary drinks,
- 1:06:28steak, and honey, and cereal in my
- 1:06:30entire house. I almost never eat
- 1:06:32vegetables. And sometimes I do like
- 1:06:36juicing and things like that and it's
- 1:06:37been good and things like but the
- 1:06:39reality is due to sugar is a superfood.
- 1:06:42Ketones are [ __ ] [ __ ] I think
- 1:06:44that amino acids are helpful but EA EAAS
- 1:06:48are [ __ ]
- 1:06:50Everything that you're seeing in the
- 1:06:51internet these days is a marketing hype
- 1:06:54designed by a company that basically is
- 1:06:56just trying to [ __ ] with your head and
- 1:06:58get your bank account. Like did you know
- 1:07:00that kale was predominantly sold to only
- 1:07:03one distribution company throughout the
- 1:07:05majority of its life and it was to Pizza
- 1:07:07Hut to be a garnish around their salad
- 1:07:09bars and then somewhere along the lines
- 1:07:11people picked up and it became something
- 1:07:13that was it became a superfood through a
- 1:07:15marketing company.
- 1:07:17So you hear these kind of things and
- 1:07:20you're like what the [ __ ] So I think
- 1:07:24it's crazy that the nutrition world is
- 1:07:27probably the most
- 1:07:32it is the most probably black and white
- 1:07:36uh like world where people align
- 1:07:39themselves like are you vegan or not and
- 1:07:42they get upset about it and are you do
- 1:07:45you believe in ketones? Are you high
- 1:07:46carb? Are you low carb? black, white,
- 1:07:48black, white, where in reality almost
- 1:07:50nobody in this industry knows what
- 1:07:52they're talking about. They're only
- 1:07:54leading with their emotions rather than
- 1:07:55their brain. And it is crazy to me. And
- 1:07:58I've worked with so many highlevel
- 1:08:00nutritionists. And guess what? Like when
- 1:08:02I get to the top of the food chain of
- 1:08:03the highest nutritionist, dude, it's
- 1:08:06just sugar. It always just comes down to
- 1:08:08sugar. [laughter] And I know that's
- 1:08:10going to freak people out, but I don't
- 1:08:13go to Whole Foods to get healthy food. I
- 1:08:15go there just to get, you know, it's cuz
- 1:08:16it's the only grocery store really in
- 1:08:17town. I'd rather shop at the feed and
- 1:08:20just buy sugar, different flavors of it,
- 1:08:23than anything else in my entire life.
- 1:08:26Oh, I want to try grapefruit today.
- 1:08:27Whatever. I'll try that flavor. I don't
- 1:08:29need to eat a real grapefruit. I just
- 1:08:30need to eat more carbs flavored as
- 1:08:32grapefruit. Because in reality, if you
- 1:08:34try to eat the amount of grapefruits
- 1:08:35that you need in a day to achieve our
- 1:08:37level of training, you will never
- 1:08:39[ __ ] make it. You will need to eat
- 1:08:41like 25 grapefruits. I've tried and it
- 1:08:44doesn't make any sense. So what do you
- 1:08:46do? You go to a website like the
- 1:08:47feed.com and you buy grapefruit flavored
- 1:08:50carbohydrates in powder form and you
- 1:08:52drink it until you [ __ ] finish your
- 1:08:54sessions. And that's the reality of our
- 1:08:56life as athletes. Like I don't care that
- 1:09:00I might be pre-diabetic. I'm a 10 time
- 1:09:02world champion. I will stomp you out.
- 1:09:05You can eat as much grapefruit as you
- 1:09:07want, but I will crush your soul on
- 1:09:10powdered carbs and honey and bread and
- 1:09:14Cheerios
- 1:09:16and whole milk, not almond milk. That's
- 1:09:19for pansies. I just I get really upset
- 1:09:24about nutrition because I just think
- 1:09:25it's one of these kind of things that is
- 1:09:27such an emotionally attached decision by
- 1:09:29most people that they will never ever be
- 1:09:31able to logically have this conversation
- 1:09:33with me. And I want to save the whole
- 1:09:35world. I do. Like I told you, I was
- 1:09:37going into that master mentor phase. And
- 1:09:40I'm telling you the truth right now. But
- 1:09:41so many people will listen to this and
- 1:09:44they will start shaking. They will start
- 1:09:46shaking because they can't emotionally
- 1:09:50encounter the reality of this situation.
- 1:09:52And I'm okay because like you know in
- 1:09:54reality I can't save everybody.
- 1:09:55Lifeboats only have six seats in them.
- 1:09:58So if you want to get in mind, let's
- 1:10:00start rowing and drink some sugar along
- 1:10:01the way.
- 1:10:02I think that's great to a great way to
- 1:10:04end the podcast. Uh just wanted to say
- 1:10:07like uh ever since I met you, you've
- 1:10:11been a role model. Everything that comes
- 1:10:13out of your mouth, like I know that you
- 1:10:16mean it with good intentions.
- 1:10:19>> Appreciate that, dude.
- 1:10:20>> I I genuinely do appreciate that. And
- 1:10:22finishing that with the nutrition thing,
- 1:10:23like I'm fully on board with that for
- 1:10:26athletes.
- 1:10:26>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And and it's uh it's
- 1:10:29it's important that you tell the truth
- 1:10:32and we tell the truth on this stuff
- 1:10:34because like yes, we could do a day of
- 1:10:37eating where we only eating whole
- 1:10:39organic foods or whatever, but it's not
- 1:10:41the truth. Dude, I've been filming this
- 1:10:44project which is like three to four
- 1:10:45workouts a day, which will come out in
- 1:10:47the future. I have been drinking mostly
- 1:10:50Monster energy drink the entire time and
- 1:10:54I am a freaking monster right now. Like
- 1:10:58I could go through brick walls. And this
- 1:11:00is an ad for Monster Energy Drink. It's
- 1:11:02just sugar and caffeine. And I tried to
- 1:11:05be healthy cuz we were doing this like
- 1:11:06summer shred cutting up phase thing and
- 1:11:09I felt like crap while we were filming.
- 1:11:11And then I just switched over to sugar
- 1:11:13again and I just started plowing through
- 1:11:15everybody. The cast was falling apart.
- 1:11:18Everybody's falling apart. And I'm just
- 1:11:19standing there like a freaking titan.
- 1:11:22And I mean, listen, I could tell you
- 1:11:23guys stories like this the whole time.
- 1:11:25I'm grateful to be here, dude. I'm I had
- 1:11:26such a great time. Thanks for coming up.
- 1:11:29>> Um, honestly, this is one of the more
- 1:11:30inspiring people that I've met in my
- 1:11:32entire life as well.
- 1:11:33>> Very few people that I meet that say
- 1:11:35they're going to go after a goal go
- 1:11:37after it like him with absolution,
- 1:11:39continuence, and never really skip a
- 1:11:42beat in the path towards what they're
- 1:11:44really chasing. He started this podcast.
- 1:11:46I've never seen him skip a week the
- 1:11:47entire thing time he started the thing,
- 1:11:49his marathons, everything. You guys stay
- 1:11:51tuned to this thing because he will
- 1:11:53continue this forever and always. And
- 1:11:55he's somebody to admire and somebody to
- 1:11:57follow because if you even have 10% of
- 1:11:59the guts this guy does to start things
- 1:12:01and also follow through on things,
- 1:12:03you'll be for the better.
- 1:12:06>> Thank you, man.
- 1:12:07>> Thank you. That was very kind.
- 1:12:08>> Of course, dude. Congrats.
