- 0:00Google builds and maintains one of the
- 0:02world's foremost networks of data
- 0:03centers their design and Engineering
- 0:05approaches have created a large and
- 0:06highly scalable data center network over
- 0:08the next few minutes we're going to get
- 0:10an exclusive inside look at how Google
- 0:12works to secure and protect the data
- 0:13that is stored in their Data Centers
- 0:16inside of a Google data center there are
- 0:17thousands upon thousands of machines
- 0:19carrying out the business of Google and
- 0:20its customers the machines are
- 0:22custombuilt by Google to their own
- 0:23specifications Google builds thousands
- 0:25of servers every year but all of them
- 0:27are built exclusively to run in these
- 0:29data centers only the necessary
- 0:31operating system services and Hardware
- 0:32are installed this helps provide a
- 0:34Computing environment that is much less
- 0:36prone to
- 0:38vulnerabilities access to Google data
- 0:40centers is tightly controlled it's in
- 0:42Google's policy not to allow Public
- 0:43tours or site
- 0:45visits security Personnel are on duty 24
- 0:47hours a day 7 days a week Google data
- 0:50centers are watched by a comprehensive
- 0:52set of video monitoring cameras once
- 0:54granted access to the facility
- 0:55authorized personnel must check in at a
- 0:57reception
- 0:58area Google takes great measures to
- 1:00protect his customer's data and the
- 1:02security and protection of that data is
- 1:04Paramount Google's customer data is
- 1:06stored in multiple locations to help
- 1:07ensure reliability the files that store
- 1:09the data are given random file names and
- 1:11are not stored in clear text so they're
- 1:13not humanly readable for each hard drive
- 1:15that is received in one of our data
- 1:16centers Google rigorously Tracks its
- 1:18location and status when a hard drive
- 1:20fails or begins to exhibit performance
- 1:22problems it's brought to this area or
- 1:24it's reformatted and retested if the
- 1:25hard drive does not pass these tests
- 1:27it's removed from the rotation the data
- 1:29on the hard drive is then overwritten to
- 1:30help ensure that no customer data
- 1:32remains on it the data override is then
- 1:34verified with a complete disre this
- 1:36process helps ensure that there's no
- 1:38trace of customer data remaining on the
- 1:39hard drive for hard drives that have
- 1:41reached the end of their life Google has
- 1:42a destruction process that is designed
- 1:44to further ensure that none of the data
- 1:45on that drive can ever be accessed the
- 1:48drives are destroyed in a multi-step
- 1:49process one device that is used to
- 1:51destroy old hard drives is known as The
- 1:53Crusher and is shown here a steel piston
- 1:55is pushed through the center of the
- 1:56drive and the platters are deformed
- 1:58making them unreadable another step in
- 2:00the process is the drive Shredder shown
- 2:02here as you can see no one will be
- 2:04likely to get any of Google's customers
- 2:05data from these drives after the
- 2:07crushing process the remains are sent to
- 2:09recycling centers Google maintains an
- 2:11extra backup of the data in the data
- 2:13center that is stored on these tapes
- 2:14shown here this provides a level of
- 2:16redundancy to help Safeguard its
- 2:18customer data Google data centers are
- 2:20connected to the internet via high-speed
- 2:22fiber optic cable in each data center
- 2:25there are multiple redundant connections
- 2:26to protect against the possibility of a
- 2:28failure from a single connection
- 2:31in addition to operating data centers
- 2:32designed for security and data
- 2:33protection Google data centers are
- 2:35designed for sustainability and Energy
- 2:37Efficiency this is Central to Google's
- 2:39commitment to being a carbon neutral
- 2:40company in 2009 Google announced that
- 2:43its data centers currently met Energy
- 2:45Efficiency levels that the US
- 2:46Environmental Protection Agency
- 2:48projected only the most state-of-the-art
- 2:49data centers would possibly meet by the
- 2:51year 2011
