  1. 0:02So we get a lot of questions from people who work in toxic leadership environments
  2. 0:06and they ask, what are they to do?
  3. 0:08How do they be the leader they wish they had?
  4. 0:11Well, being the leader you wish you had means you commit yourself
  5. 0:15to the care and success of those around you.
  6. 0:17Remember, leadership has nothing to do with rank.
  7. 0:19I know many people who sit at the highest levels of organizations
  8. 0:23who are not leaders. They have authority, which is why we do as they tell us
  9. 0:27but we would not follow them. Leadership can happen at any rank.
  10. 0:30The choice you have to make is
  11. 0:31do you want to be the leader? Now leadership comes with risks.
  12. 0:35If you speak truth to power, you could get in trouble.
  13. 0:37If you're the one who stands in between
  14. 0:39the powers that be and the people that you work with,
  15. 0:43if you're gonna commit yourself
  16. 0:44to work late sometimes to help people and make those sacrifices,
  17. 0:48you're gonna have to take those risks.
  18. 0:50That's why not everyone wants to be a leader
  19. 0:52because it does come with real sacrifice and real risk.
  20. 0:55But if you want to be that person,
  21. 0:56if you want to be the leader you wish you had,
  22. 0:59you look to your left, you look to your right
  23. 1:00and you say, how can I help them succeed?
  24. 1:01Number one: if you see somebody on your team struggling
  25. 1:04ask them if they're okay.
  26. 1:06Ask them if you can help. If you know that somebody doesn't know
  27. 1:10how to do something, sit down and show them.
  28. 1:13Ask them if you want them to double check your work.
  29. 1:16Remember, a big way in which we build trust is not actually by
  30. 1:20offering for help but also asking for help.
  31. 1:23So one of the things you can do
  32. 1:25by being a leader is also asking for those around you to help.
  33. 1:28Let them feel like they're empowered
  34. 1:28to help those around them and in the course of time you will
  35. 1:32build a level of trust on your team that they will see you as the person
  36. 1:35who has their back.
  37. 1:36And you get used to it. It's a practice like many other
  38. 1:41like any other skills. You want to ride a bicycle,
  39. 1:43you have to practice, you get good at it.
  40. 1:44Leadership is the same.
  41. 1:47Get in the habit of considering the lives of others.
  42. 1:50If someone's running for the elevator, the doors are closing,
  43. 1:53you're running late for a meeting. Instead of just letting the doors close,
  44. 1:56hold the door open for somebody. If you're the last person to pour yourself
  45. 1:59a cup of coffee at the office, instead of putting the empty pot back
  46. 2:02make another pot of coffee.
  47. 2:03It's little, little things where you consider those around you,
  48. 2:06the lives of others, sometimes ahead of yourself
  49. 2:09and be willing to sacrifice time and energy to help those around you.
