- 0:43hidden from view behind this fence is a

- 0:49outhouse and a shower
- 0:50one of the sheds was even sound proofed
- 0:53police even found the silver colored car
- 0:55used in the kidnapping back in 1991
- 0:58the secret compound was so well
- 1:00concealed law enforcement officers did
- 1:03not
- 1:03find it during searches of the property
- 1:05in 2006
- 1:06and last july i offer my apologies to
- 1:10the
- 1:11victims and have
- 1:15accepted responsibility for having
- 1:17missed an earlier
- 1:19opportunity to rescue jc
- 1:22the accused kidnappers were an odd
- 1:24couple it just kind of seemed out there
- 1:27incredibly he gave a jailhouse interview
- 1:29to a sacramento tv station
- 1:31you're gonna find the most powerful
- 1:32story coming from the victim you're
- 1:34gonna fall over backwards and in the end
- 1:36you're gonna find the most powerful hot
- 1:38rhyming story it's a disgusting thing
- 1:40that took place with me in the beginning
- 1:42that i turned my life completely around
- 1:44jc was 11 when she was kidnapped in 1991
- 1:48she's now 29 today she's with her mother
- 1:51terry
- 1:52and sister shanna a toddler when j.c was
- 1:54kidnapped
- 1:55she was in good health but living in a
- 1:58backyard for the past 18 years
- 1:59does take its toll also with them are
- 2:01the two children j.c
- 2:03had with gyarado siobhan molino a client
- 2:06of gyarados printing business
- 2:07took this photo of the children at a
- 2:09birthday party what church you guys go
- 2:11to she said that
- 2:12we have church in our basement he said
- 2:15well how many people are in your church
- 2:16she said
- 2:17five i said okay well who's the pastor
- 2:21my dad and i was a little shocked the
- 2:23reunited family is now living together
- 2:25in a rented house in an undisclosed
- 2:27location
- 2:28with 18 years to catch up on
- 2:33the man in this haunting mug shot has a
- 2:36long history of monstrous behavior
- 2:38including a previous conviction for
- 2:40kidnapping and rape
- 2:42the citizens should be outraged that a
- 2:44predator like him
- 2:45was free to prey upon somebody else only
- 2:48this time unfortunately 11 year old
- 2:49child
- 2:50in 1976 philip garrido then 25
- 2:54abducted a woman from a lake tahoe
- 2:56parking lot
- 2:57took her to a warehouse and raped her he
- 3:00had induced this young lady
- 3:02to get into his vehicle he then tied her
- 3:05up you know like the cowboys do in a
- 3:07rodeo
- 3:08he tied her up that way threw a dirty
- 3:11blanket on top of her and put her on the
- 3:13floor in the back seat
- 3:15all the time taking lsd and describing
- 3:17to her
- 3:18in graphic detail what he was going to
- 3:21do to her when he got her to nevada
- 3:23today the prosecutor in the case is
- 3:25outraged that garrida was released
- 3:27only to allegedly kidnap jc dugard and
- 3:30imprison her for 18 years
- 3:33what was your reaction when you learned
- 3:35that
- 3:36he was arrested for another horrific
- 3:39crime
- 3:39i'm shocked at what this child had to go
- 3:41through for the last 18
- 3:43years but unfortunately not shocked at
- 3:46the depravity of this man garrido was
- 3:49sentenced to 50 years at the federal
- 3:51penitentiary in leavenworth kansas
- 3:53there he met his wife nancy the niece of
- 3:56another prisoner
- 3:57they got married behind prison walls
- 3:59garrito's brother calls the woman
- 4:01a robot and compares the relationship to
- 4:04charles manson
- 4:05and the notorious manson girls garrido
- 4:08was paroled in 1988 having served just
- 4:1011 years
- 4:11he then moved into the home where he
- 4:13built the backyard from hell
- 4:15we found his father at his home where he
- 4:17blamed his son's problems on drug abuse
- 4:20and he got down there stuff and that was
- 4:21the end
- 4:23couldn't talk to him no matter what you
- 4:26said garrito's own brother calls him a
- 4:28fruitcake and an idiot
- 4:30now the prosecutor who hoped garrito
- 4:32would never be free to victimize another
- 4:34young woman
- 4:35can barely contain his anger what do you
- 4:38think should happen now
- 4:39i think he should be tried i think he
- 4:41should be convicted and i think they
- 4:42should throw the key away
- 4:50let the whole world know what he had
- 4:53done for me
- 4:57chantelle peterson is talking about a
- 4:59man she helped to lay to rest
- 5:01a man named terry farrell one of the 343
- 5:04firefighters who died trying to save
- 5:07lives
- 5:07at the world trade center terry gave me
- 5:10my life
- 5:11no this 13 year old from las vegas was
- 5:14not rescued from the trade center
- 5:16this special story goes back to 1993
- 5:19when little chantel was suffering from
- 5:22potentially fatal t-cell lymphoma
- 5:24she desperately needed a bone marrow
- 5:27donation
- 5:28enter terry farrell a robust father of
- 5:31two from huntington long island
- 5:33a total stranger and a perfect match
- 5:36who happened to be on a national donor
- 5:38list
- 5:39he gladly gave his marrow it feels good
- 5:42to know you did something you chose to
- 5:43do
- 5:44and somebody's alive today because you
- 5:45did it it worked
- 5:47a year later chantal was pronounced
- 5:49cured
- 5:50and terry was delighted i asked how
- 5:52chantelle was doing
- 5:53she said well she's running down the
- 5:54block i said like a normal six-year-old
- 5:58you're mr nice man
- 6:06and when at last they met it was a
- 6:08friendship for life between the grateful
- 6:10little girl
- 6:11and the firemen who knew just how
- 6:13precious life is
- 6:15we work in a dangerous profession and
- 6:17you know one day you might walk out the
- 6:18door you might not come home again
- 6:19for terry that day was september 11th
- 6:22chantelle will never forget how she got
- 6:24the tragic news from her mom
- 6:26sherry she said that they
- 6:30have found his body and
- 6:33i go and start smiling and i go is he
- 6:36okay
- 6:38and my mom said
- 6:42no chantal desperately hoped she could
- 6:44save terry's life
- 6:46as he had saved hers she was getting
- 6:48ready for school
- 6:50and she says mom is something wrong with
- 6:51terry do i need to give him some blood
- 6:53or something
- 6:56i wish i could have told her yes
- 7:00and so the petersons made the long trip
- 7:02to long island
- 7:03for a final farewell to terry whose own
- 7:06children tj and rebecca
- 7:08mourn the man they remember as a devoted
- 7:10dad who always found time for them
- 7:13i'm sad and angry at the same time
- 7:15because
- 7:18my hair was killed
- 7:23chantal gathered her strength to give a
- 7:25reading at the funeral service
- 7:27for the man who saved her life i felt
- 7:30his
- 7:30his warmth and just
- 7:34trying to prove that i could be as brave
- 7:36as he was
- 7:41this is a medal chantelle will always
- 7:43treasure it came from terry's uniform
- 7:46a memento of courage she'll always keep
- 7:49from the man who never made a big deal
- 7:51out of what he did for her i don't go
- 7:53out and you know start telling everybody
- 7:55i pat me on the back i'm a great guy
- 7:56here you know like because
- 7:57people know i'm not that great all the
- 7:58time but there's a young girl from las
- 8:01vegas who would disagree with those
- 8:03words when it comes to terry farrell
- 8:05for whom chantelle has some final words
- 8:08of her own
- 8:09i won't forget you and i will
- 8:12always love you forever
- 8:16he's the new american hero the pilot of
- 8:18the u.s airways jet who flawlessly
- 8:20landed his plane in the hudson river
- 8:23chesley sullenberger known as sully is
- 8:25being hailed the hero of the hudson in
- 8:27front page headlines
- 8:29tribute pages popped up overnight on
- 8:30facebook with thousands of messages of
- 8:33admiration and president bush
- 8:35also hailed his heroism we are very
- 8:37grateful that everyone is off the
- 8:38airplane
- 8:39safely and that was really what my
- 8:41husband asked to convey to everyone
- 8:43and of course we are very proud of dad
- 8:45his wife lori's voice cracked as she
- 8:47spoke of the drama
- 8:48she's a fitness expert on a san
- 8:50francisco tv station and they have two
- 8:52young daughters
- 8:53my husband has said over the years that
- 8:55it's highly unlikely for any pilot to
- 8:57ever have an
- 8:57incident in his career let alone
- 9:00something like this
- 9:0157 year old sully's heroism didn't end
- 9:03with bringing down the plane safely
- 9:05he was the last man off waiting the
- 9:08aisles in waist deep water to make sure
- 9:10all passengers were off
- 9:11the pilot did a masterful job of landing
- 9:14the plane
- 9:15in the river and then making sure that
- 9:18everybody got out
- 9:20new york mayor michael bloomberg spoke
- 9:21in awe of his heroism
- 9:23i had a long conversation with the pilot
- 9:26he walked the plane twice
- 9:28after everybody else was off and tried
- 9:30to verify that there was nobody else on
- 9:32board
- 9:33sully was the right man with the right
- 9:34stuff at the right moment
- 9:36he's a pilot's pilot and he loves the
- 9:39art of the airplane
- 9:40this is solely as an air force academy
- 9:42cadet when he was 22
- 9:44he flew f-4 phantom jets for seven years
- 9:47this captain did an incredible job he's
- 9:49a man whose hand i would like to shake
- 9:50someday
- 9:51this is how it looked from the pilot's
- 9:53point of view recreated for inside
- 9:54edition in a flight simulator
- 9:56he avoids manhattan skyscrapers to land
- 9:59in the hudson river
- 10:00at an estimated 140 miles per hour
- 10:03courage in the cockpit was matched with
- 10:04compassion in thursday's drama
- 10:07several passengers suffered from
- 10:08hypothermia in the freezing temperatures
- 10:11survivor barry leonard told good morning
- 10:13america the pilot or co-pilot
- 10:15literally gave him the shirt off his
- 10:17back i actually still have it this

- 10:44for impact
