- 0:00we welcome you back to CBS mornings it's
- 0:037 30. this morning our series age of AI
- 0:06looks at how artificial intelligence is
- 0:08set to transform the beauty and
- 0:10cosmetics industry the market for AI and
- 0:12beauty and cosmetics is already a
- 0:14multi-billion Dollar business with a B
- 0:16globally researchers predict it will
- 0:19grow rapidly by 2030. so companies are
- 0:21now rolling out AI robots that aim to
- 0:24make services like eyelash treatments
- 0:26yikes and manicures quicker and cheaper
- 0:28but will these so-called Beauty Bots
- 0:30cause people their jobs consumer
- 0:33investigative correspondent Anna Werner
- 0:34takes a look
- 0:37[Music]
- 0:40customers seeking professional manicures
- 0:43have been heading to nail salons for
- 0:45more than a century but in San Francisco
- 0:47you can now stop by the lobby of this
- 0:49office building and have a robot do it
- 0:51it's the brainchild of startup Clockwork
- 0:54co-founder and CEO renuka apte says the
- 0:57idea grew partly out of her own
- 0:59frustration with Salon appointments it
- 1:01hit this pain point that people
- 1:03immediately resonated with it takes a
- 1:06long time to get your nails done correct
- 1:08our Beauty services in general
- 1:11clockwork's goal is to place these
- 1:13machines where people live and work
- 1:14making a manicure super convenient and
- 1:17quick just 10 minutes so we really want
- 1:19this to be like grabbing a cup of coffee
- 1:22and that could be anywhere from like
- 1:25apartment complexes to corporate offices
- 1:28retail stores we watched as the robot
- 1:31painted my nails with a single perfect
- 1:33blue coat with just a minor hiccup we
- 1:36have a little hole in this one requiring
- 1:38a redo of my thumb artificial
- 1:41intelligence AI is what enables this
- 1:43robot to scan Nails individually and
- 1:46paint each accurately Cecile cuyambo
- 1:48took a break from work to try it what do
- 1:51you think I love them I can never paint
- 1:54them this smooth looking so nice on my
- 1:57own never I see myself coming back here
- 2:00often but if another company is
- 2:02successful you might not have to leave
- 2:04home Nimble Beauty has sold more than
- 2:06five thousand of its home devices on
- 2:08Kickstarter and has begun shipping them
- 2:10to early buyers CEO Omri Moran you can
- 2:14do it at any time of the day while
- 2:16getting great results it's four coat
- 2:18manicure takes about an hour my Express
- 2:21manicure two coats in about 25 minutes
- 2:23wasn't quite as precise as the Clockwork
- 2:26manicure but the company says the
- 2:28machine learns over time using AI what
- 2:31would happen if you tried to have a nail
- 2:33painting robot that didn't have ai I
- 2:37don't think you can do it without AI
- 2:38because without the AI you'd basically
- 2:40have a robot that would sort of do like
- 2:41one thing yes it would be able to
- 2:43identify the specificness that it has
- 2:46saved in the system versus understanding
- 2:48what a nail is and then figuring out oh
- 2:51I'm seeing a nail this is the shape of
- 2:53this nail this is the cuticle that is
- 2:55where the AI comes into play
- 2:57but to see what artificial intelligence
- 3:00in the beauty space can really do take a
- 3:02look at this you're watching robot arms
- 3:05ever so gently pick their way through
- 3:08this woman's eyelashes to add eyelash
- 3:10extensions it's a process that typically
- 3:13takes a human over two hours of precise
- 3:15painstaking labor that's why Loom
- 3:18co-founder Nate Harding decided it was a
- 3:21great job for a robot yeah it's perfect
- 3:23because why because it's so laborious
- 3:27and it's right on the edge of human
- 3:30ability like I like robotics
- 3:32applications where you're augmenting
- 3:34what a human can do not really replacing
- 3:36them
- 3:37coming up with a machine that could
- 3:39perform such a delicate task took six
- 3:42years safety is critical so Harding says
- 3:45the robot arms that select individual
- 3:47lashes then glue on the extensions are
- 3:50literally light as a feather we mounted
- 3:52them with little tiny magnets that are
- 3:54so weak watch I can just flip it off
- 3:56with my finger like that
- 3:59Lisa sansonong came to Oakland all the
- 4:02way from Kansas for this here she is
- 4:04before and after it feels great and
- 4:08looks I love it but will this take lash
- 4:11artists jobs their National Association
- 4:13told us it doesn't think so while it
- 4:15acknowledged some lash artists have
- 4:17expressed fear of losing their jobs it
- 4:19said the robots could attract a whole
- 4:21new clientele for lash extensions so
- 4:24what about nail technicians how do you
- 4:26respond to some people in the industry
- 4:28who may say well okay but you're going
- 4:31to put people out of work I don't think
- 4:33we're going to put nail salon decks out
- 4:35of work and the reason is that this
- 4:37isn't that's like saying like a vending
- 4:39machine would put a chef out of work
- 4:41right it's like saying that what we're
- 4:43going for is Express Services get in get
- 4:46out there's just a whole gamut of things
- 4:48that humans can do and this is not that
- 4:51her company is putting out two to three
- 4:53more machines in new locations each
- 4:55month and Loom just installed a machine
- 4:58in a retail outlet Ulta Beauty in San
- 5:01Jose California for CBS mornings I'm
- 5:03Anna Werner Oakland California
- 5:06is right
- 5:07well we have several organizations for
- 5:09nail artists if they were concerned
- 5:11about robots putting nail techs out of
- 5:13jobs we didn't hear back from any of
- 5:15them Nimble Beauty the manufacturer of
- 5:17the at-home nail machine says it expects
- 5:19the machine to be available for purchase
- 5:21early next year the idea guys of a
- 5:2410-minute manicure is very attractive to
- 5:26you yeah yes the eyes I'm still a little
- 5:28worried about the eyes because I've been
- 5:30there and it's two hours if you have a
- 5:32human being that's painstaking work but
- 5:34I'm afraid of somebody working on my
- 5:36eyes but a robot if it pokes you in the
- 5:38eye it's not going to say I'm sorry
- 5:39that's true and if it pokes you in the
- 5:41eye you can go
- 5:43yeah and girl I'm not necessarily sure
- 5:45about this but I have a feeling that you
- 5:47like to talk to people when you're
- 5:48what's that funny I think we know I'm
- 5:52actually very shy and introverted oh
- 5:54really yes that's a surprise to all of
- 5:56us
- 5:57look at somebody in the eyes and also
- 5:59who's going to give you the nice hand
- 6:01massage that's true that's true but you
- 6:03raised an interesting point I will
- 6:04honest to God go places and say I'm just
- 6:06going to sit I'm not going to say
- 6:07anything and then I just can't help it
- 6:09somebody says something I just want to
- 6:11follow up surprise surprise all right
