- 0:00Now to a very different crime story that
- 0:02has suddenly burst back into the
- 0:04headlines. At the center of it is an
- 0:06eccentric member of a prominent real
- 0:08estate family. A man linked to three
- 0:10murders. Filmmakers may have
- 0:13accomplished what the police could not
- 0:15do. Come up with the evidence to convict
- 0:17him. Here's 48 hours correspondent Aaron
- 0:20Morardi.
- 0:22It all began in 1982 when 29-year-old
- 0:25Kathleen Durst disappeared from her home
- 0:27in New York. 18 years later, Susan
- 0:30Burman was found shot dead in her home
- 0:32in Los Angeles. The following year, the
- 0:35body of Morris Black was found in the
- 0:36Galveastston Bay, dismembered and in
- 0:38plastic bags. All three victims have one
- 0:41connection, a man named Robert Durst,
- 0:44the son of a powerful New York real
- 0:46estate mogul. Durst is the main suspect,
- 0:49but has never been charged in either the
- 0:51disappearance of his wife Kathleen or
- 0:53the execution style murder of close
- 0:56friend Susan Berman. He was eventually
- 0:58charged with a murder and dismemberment
- 1:00of his neighbor Morris Black. Is it well
- 1:02planned and calculated? You bet it is.
- 1:04But told the jury it was self-defense.
- 1:07They believed him. We the jury find the
- 1:09defendant Robert Durst not guilty. Then
- 1:13in early 2011, Durst decided to tell his
- 1:16life story to filmmaker Andrew Jerki.
- 1:18Jerky's six-part documentary The Jinx
- 1:21has been airing on HBO. In the series
- 1:24finale, which aired last night, the
- 1:26filmmaker confronted Durst with evidence
- 1:28that Durst may have been Susan Berman's
- 1:30killer. A letter Durst wrote to Susan
- 1:32Berman that seemed to match the
- 1:34handwriting on an anonymous letter
- 1:36telling police where to find her body. I
- 1:39mean, the writing looks similar and the
- 1:41spelling is is the same, so I can see
- 1:43the conclusion the cops were draw. When
- 1:46the interview was over, a shaken Durst
- 1:48went to the bathroom, still wearing his
- 1:50microphone and could be heard muttering
- 1:52to himself about the interview. What the
- 1:54hell are you doing?
- 1:57Kill the whole course.
- 2:00On Saturday, the day before the country
- 2:03heard his admissions on television,
- 2:05authorities arrested Robert Durst in New
- 2:07Orleans and charged him with the murder
- 2:09of Susan Berman. Today, Durst's attorney
- 2:12said he's innocent and vowed to fight
- 2:14the charges. Bob Durst didn't kill Susan
- 2:17Burman. He's ready to end all the rumor
- 2:20and speculation and have a trial.
- 2:23So Erin, if the tape is what the
- 2:26producers say that it is, would any of
- 2:28this be admissible in court? Well,
- 2:29defense attorneys told me that if this
- 2:31goes to trial, they will fight to keep
- 2:33those statements out. And of course,
- 2:35they're going to do what you just said.
- 2:36They're likely to raise questions about
- 2:38the recording itself. Is it what
- 2:40producers say it is? And then microphone
- 2:43or not, did Robert Durst have an
- 2:45expectation of privacy when he went to
- 2:46the restroom? Erin Morardi, 48 hours.
