- 0:00And in the sense of the gins, because
- 0:02you like the gins are made of fire. Why
- 0:03do they need water? Wouldn't that kill
- 0:04them? We don't know their relationship
- 0:07with water to be honest with you. It
- 0:08seems like they do have some
- 0:09relationship with water because of this
- 0:11ayah. The exact nature of that
- 0:12relationship, we don't know. But in a
- 0:14figurative sense, this actually means we
- 0:16would have made life really good for
- 0:19them. That's how I would help you
- 0:21understand the figurative meaning of
- 0:22this phrase.
- 0:25We would have made life very, very good
- 0:26for them.
- 0:28That's what it means to have plenty of
- 0:29water. Because in the ancient world, if
- 0:31you had plenty of rain and plenty of
- 0:32water, what did you have that came with
- 0:34it? Gardens, farm, crop, wealth,
- 0:37everything else that came came because
- 0:39of that. Why did the Egyptians become a
- 0:41superpower after the drought in the time
- 0:43of Ysef Alisam? Because water was
- 0:45preserved.
- 0:46This video features just a short snippet
- 0:49from our new deeper look of surahul jin
- 0:52which is now being released exclusively
- 0:54on Baya TV. Watch the fulllength episode
- 0:58along with thousands of more hours of
- 1:01man's explanations of the Quran at
- 1:03bayatv.com.
- 1:10Now it seems that Allah is departing
- 1:12from the speech of the jin and there's
- 1:15calam about is the last statement also
- 1:17speech of jin or not but regardless this
- 1:19much this much is clear in ayah number
- 1:2116 there's a transition happening
- 1:23calledat where now Allah is interjecting
- 1:26interjecting his own comment Allah is
- 1:28making his own comment and his comment
- 1:30it seems applies to both human beings
- 1:32and to jin
- 1:34in their own ways the toughest part of
- 1:37this ayah is going to the last part. So,
- 1:39I'm going to first translate it and talk
- 1:41about that last part so we can make
- 1:42sense of what's going on in the rest.
- 1:46Had they only committed themselves to
- 1:49the right the road had they only
- 1:51committed themselves to the road and
- 1:54stayed firm on the road,
- 1:58we would have replenished them or given
- 2:00them plenty to drink with water that is
- 2:03abundant, water that irrigates, water
- 2:06that is full of life. The hard word
- 2:09here, the new word here is
- 2:14the broad widespread rain or water.
- 2:21When a p when a place becomes fully
- 2:23fully rejuvenated by water, it's called
- 2:26the the the that region became
- 2:29the experience
- 2:34where land that became soft and you know
- 2:37the soil became soft because of the rain
- 2:40etc. Um similarly they use
- 2:46a year that was good in the rain. It's
- 2:48called a year of
- 2:51a lot of greenery came out
- 2:55and life or circumstances that are are
- 3:00you know where lots of crop grew. So
- 3:03there's a reference to water like if
- 3:06they only committed themselves to the
- 3:07right way we would have given them
- 3:08plenty of water to be replenished with.
- 3:12Water in Arabic and in in classical
- 3:14literature is also a reference to all
- 3:16things that come from water.
- 3:20All major cities in the world are near
- 3:22some source of water. Original
- 3:24civilizations in history had to be near
- 3:26some kind of water reservoir because the
- 3:29population is going to need a regular
- 3:31and steady supply of water.
- 3:34Imagine for a moment that for 48 hours
- 3:36there's no water available in Melbourne.
- 3:38Just for 48 hours. Imagine the state of
- 3:42emergency that creates for virtually
- 3:45every part of life. Not just dehydration
- 3:50but sanitation and med medicine and like
- 3:55infra basic infrastructure. Everything
- 3:57falls apart with this one resource for
- 4:00human beings. This is not only the
- 4:01source of life for human or for all
- 4:04species but on top of all of that it is
- 4:07also the source of human civilization.
- 4:10That's why major cities and major you
- 4:12know uh nations
- 4:14you know situated themselves great
- 4:16powers always headed towards where
- 4:18they're they have closest access to
- 4:20water and waterways and water works or
- 4:21underwater reservoirs etc etc right and
- 4:24the nations that don't have that spend a
- 4:27huge amount of their resources to import
- 4:29water so they can have enough because
- 4:32it's you can't survive without it
- 4:34there's no way around it but if Allah
- 4:36says we we would have given him them
- 4:38plenty of water my reading meaning of
- 4:40this is of course Makkah already had a
- 4:42water reservoir. It had zum it already
- 4:44had it. So it could be that the Quraysh
- 4:47could look at this ay and say and if
- 4:48they had only committed to the path we
- 4:50would have given them plenty of water
- 4:52because we already got plenty of water.
- 4:53We got zum right? But one possible
- 4:57response to that is they're not a green
- 5:00place. There's not so much water that
- 5:02the entire place has turned into a
- 5:04garden. That's certainly not the case.
- 5:07Another is that may this may not be
- 5:09referring to water in the literal sense
- 5:12like Allah would have blessed this
- 5:13nation with a lot but even then the
- 5:15Quraysh might turn around and say we
- 5:17already got a lot we already had
- 5:21we can travel and do our caravans we're
- 5:24doing pretty good right it's now as if
- 5:27Allah is saying if the society as a
- 5:29whole had been committed to the path all
- 5:31of them would have been doing well
- 5:33because the wealthy want to keep who
- 5:35living well themselves. But there's the
- 5:39ms, there's the, you know, the the
- 5:42recipient of the the one who got short
- 5:45changed. You've got the
- 5:50you've got, you know, people that are
- 5:53there's lots of poverty in the region,
- 5:55too. There's a lot of people that are
- 5:57not doing well. There's a lot of people
- 5:59that are being oppressed, economically
- 6:00oppressed. Allah says had they committed
- 6:02to the path, all of them would have been
- 6:04replenished. they everybody would have
- 6:06lived well meaning this pathway that
- 6:08Allah is offering is one that benefits
- 6:10all of society not just the select few
- 6:12in society there are reports in the s
- 6:16literature about a drought that did hit
- 6:19Makkah and then this being a reference
- 6:22to that also so that may be the case but
- 6:25this is more than that also and in the
- 6:28sense of the gins because you like the
- 6:29gins are made of fire why do they need
- 6:31water wouldn't that kill them we don't
- 6:33know their relationship with water. To
- 6:35be honest with you, it seems like they
- 6:36do have some relationship with water
- 6:37because of this ayah. The exact nature
- 6:39of that relationship, we don't know. But
- 6:41in a figurative sense, this actually
- 6:43means we would have made life really
- 6:45good for them. That's how I would help
- 6:48you understand the figurative meaning of
- 6:49this phrase.
- 6:52We would have made life very very good
- 6:54for them. That's what it means to have
- 6:56plenty of water. Because in the ancient
- 6:58world, if you had plenty of rain and
- 6:59plenty of water, what did you have that
- 7:01came with it? gardens, farm, crop,
- 7:04wealth, everything else that came came
- 7:06because of that. Why did the Egyptians
- 7:08become a superpower after the drought in
- 7:10the time of Ysefam? Because water was
- 7:12preserved,
- 7:13right? And then eventually they became
- 7:15what they became. And he even Pharaoh
- 7:17talking about the might of his power
- 7:19said
- 7:21these rivers flow bene beneath my feet.
- 7:24Right? So water was a big deal and
- 7:26incapacitating them turning the water
- 7:28into blood was a big deal. So, um, this
- 7:34statement is telling us something of a
- 7:36departure from what we've been learning.
- 7:38You'll notice a lot of the ayat until we
- 7:40got towards the end, but a lot of the
- 7:42ayat were individual in nature,
- 7:46right?
- 7:51There was an individual tone to a lot of
- 7:54what was said before, right?
- 7:56uh uh but now Allah is making a comment
- 8:00about the collective not about the
- 8:03individual but about the collective and
- 8:06there are few places in the Quran where
- 8:07Allah gives us very clear-cut
- 8:09descriptions of what happens when a
- 8:11society follows Allah's guidance and the
- 8:15formula seems to be like for the Jews
- 8:17and Christians Allah said
- 8:24had they lived by and implemented the
- 8:27Torah and the Injil, they would have had
- 8:29things to eat from above them and from
- 8:31below them. What does that mean? Above
- 8:32them and below them, plenty of rain
- 8:34which would produce plenty of crop. So
- 8:38that's again a ref similar reference to
- 8:39what's happening here, right? Meaning if
- 8:42people live by revelation, then the
- 8:44economics of that society become very
- 8:46good. The society starts prospering
- 8:48because they're living by revelation. It
- 8:50is not the reason to follow revelation,
- 8:54but it is one of the side benefits of a
- 8:58society living by revelation. It seems
- 9:00if there's a critical mass of people
- 9:02that live by what Allah says, then that
- 9:05entire society becomes a beneficiary.
- 9:11There's no way everybody will be like
- 9:14righteous. But it seems there's a
- 9:15threshold or something, some kind of
- 9:18divine calculation.
- 9:20that if enough people do that then
- 9:22they'll all be okay. This is similar to
- 9:23Allah does not destroy a nation while
- 9:25there are at least some people doing aar
- 9:29there's a sometimes Allah mentions a
- 9:31minimal threshold right and short of
- 9:33that that nation no longer survives so
- 9:36in this case
- 9:40you would think this is a what the what
- 9:43the Christians call nowadays the
- 9:44prosperity gospel right live by the word
- 9:47of God and life's going to be good
- 9:51it's going to be a good year The sales
- 9:52are going to go up,
- 9:54taxes are going to go down,
- 9:58right? That's what this sounds like,
- 10:01prosperity. Except what Allah does here
- 10:04is something pretty shocking. He says,
- 10:08"We were not expecting that." So we
- 10:11could test them with it.
- 10:13Allah just said if you lived by if you
- 10:17committed to the path you would have
- 10:19been replenished and you would have
- 10:21lived well everything would have been
- 10:23great for everybody but even if we did
- 10:25all of that we will only do that to put
- 10:27them in a test they'd end up being
- 10:29tested again two things here that we're
- 10:32going to try to figure out first of all
- 10:34I I went by it quickly and was wondering
- 10:36if anybody had crossed their minds Allah
- 10:38said had they only stayed on the path
- 10:41which means
- 10:43They were on the path and then they went
- 10:47off the path. So what in the world does
- 10:49it mean? They were already on the path
- 10:51cuz we thought they're all off the path.
- 10:55And what's so beautiful about this the
- 10:57word notice in other places in the Quran
- 10:59you find the word
- 11:04for example also the speech of the jin
- 11:07right? But here you don't find you find
- 11:11which is the singular form of which was
- 11:14mentioned earlier and the plural of is
- 11:18so is and becomes. So the there's a
- 11:22consistency and by this there's a
- 11:24hyperlink created between this word and
- 11:27we were all going in all different ways
- 11:29and now Allah uses the f the original
- 11:31road had they had they stayed on the
- 11:34original road that a prophet was walking
- 11:36or that the guidance of Allah was
- 11:37walking them on and they didn't break
- 11:38off into offshoots then things would
- 11:41have worked out great. You were all
- 11:43originally on the same road
- 11:48right? So this [laughter] is as if Allah
- 11:51is now describing that you know and this
- 11:53has geographical relevance too because
- 11:55this drought report is from Makkah and
- 11:58the mushri or mushikun of Makkah and
- 12:01Makkah is the house of built by
- 12:03Ibraimisam. So when this when he took
- 12:06the road to get here and built this
- 12:09house and left a legacy
- 12:12that was supposed to be followed by his
- 12:15offspring who eventually went off on
- 12:17different roads and flooded this with
- 12:19idols. So when he's saying they only
- 12:21stuck to the road that was there to
- 12:22begin with meaning the road of
- 12:23Ibraimisam
- 12:26that because that was the original road
- 12:28this house was built for that reason.
- 12:33Then we then you think you have enough
- 12:35water with zam zam. This place would
- 12:36have been a heaven on earth. This place
- 12:40would have been nicer than Hawaii and it
- 12:41would have been nicer than like you know
- 12:44what's that Bali for you people like.
- 12:47Right.
- 12:49Right.
- 12:53This is the Now that sounds again I'm
- 12:55I'm emphasizing that it sounds like the
- 12:57prosperity gospel except
- 13:01so we would end up testing them with it.
- 13:03This is now where the Quran teaches us
- 13:05something one of its most profound bits
- 13:07of sociological wisdom
- 13:10a spiritual look at sociology.
- 13:13Allah will give
- 13:15faith communities that that are that are
- 13:18that do right by the faith. they do
- 13:19right by Allah's teaching and they come
- 13:21back to the original teachings Allah
- 13:23will give them prosperity but once he
- 13:26give them prosperity
- 13:28and prosperity itself
- 13:30becomes a distraction
- 13:33and when that becomes a distraction they
- 13:35start going away from the very thing
- 13:37that caused the prosperity to begin with
- 13:40right they start forgetting about Allah
- 13:42they start getting distracted by
- 13:44luxuries they start get distracted by
- 13:47entertainment they they become more
- 13:49materialistic. They start becoming petty
- 13:51and comparing with each other.
- 13:56Who has more? Who had a bigger wedding?
- 13:58Who had a more expensive outfit? Oh,
- 13:59that one's from last year. This one's
- 14:01from this year. Did you see their belt?
- 14:02Did you see their shoes? Did you see
- 14:03their car? Did you see their house? Did
- 14:05you see their
- 14:08did you see their wedding video?
- 14:11Right? People will just get distracted.
- 14:13When life gets good, they get
- 14:14distracted.
- 14:16So it's not like the end goal of
- 14:18following revelation is we'll get a
- 14:21prosperous society because a prosperous
- 14:23society will come with its own set of
- 14:25problems.
- 14:27Its own set of problems. There are two
- 14:28kinds of blessings. There's material
- 14:31blessings and there's spiritual
- 14:32blessings. Yeah. Material blessings.
- 14:36Water,
- 14:38prosperity. That's material blessing.
- 14:40And Allah says that will come to you if
- 14:42you follow revelation. This was told to
- 14:44the people before us and it's been told
- 14:46to us. But then he's also saying that
- 14:49even that material blessing will become
- 14:51a curse if you separated from the
- 14:56spiritual blessing because it's the it's
- 14:58the spiritual commitment that led to the
- 15:00material blessing. Right? Once you get
- 15:03there, then it starts kind of withering
- 15:06away. One of the things I'm I'm going to
- 15:08be ominous with you because I've seen
- 15:10the American story and I hope it doesn't
- 15:12happen here because you guys are in in
- 15:15community development. You maybe are a
- 15:17couple of decades behind but rapidly
- 15:20catching up. You're in the same
- 15:21trajectory. So the American Muslim
- 15:24community makes a lot of money. We got
- 15:26money. We got serious money. And we
- 15:29build mega mosques.
- 15:32They Texas got mega churches. We got
- 15:33mega mosques. And they don't just build
- 15:35a masid. They'll build they'll they'll
- 15:37buy like a 100 acres, 200 acres, 300
- 15:39acres of land and they'll build masid in
- 15:42the middle and they'll start selling
- 15:44plots of land and people will buy those
- 15:46lands and build their luxury homes. So
- 15:48you got like the villas of Andaloo and
- 15:51you've got like the Alamra neighborhood,
- 15:54etc. This is for real, right? And you
- 15:58could and then we'll make a private
- 15:59walkway into the masid. And so life is
- 16:01good. Mashallah, it's good. all Muslims
- 16:04are moving and it's like you'll see like
- 16:0695 homes all Muslim owned in some
- 16:09neighborhoods and of course when enough
- 16:10of that happens we don't want no Sharia
- 16:12law here like that that that happens
- 16:15right
- 16:17um so they'll do that and it took a lot
- 16:20of work to do that it's not small right
- 16:22this is in the last 20 years it's it's
- 16:25an explosion in the last 20 years I
- 16:26moved to Texas in 2007 and it was there
- 16:30was one community like that now there's
- 16:31like a dozen communities like that and
- 16:33they're all massive like Jym is like
- 16:35three 4 thousand people in each of them
- 16:37and they have multiple Jas like a prayer
- 16:40in one of the massages is like 5 600
- 16:42people on average like this it's like
- 16:44it's a when you come here like Islam is
- 16:49right everything's bigger in Texas even
- 16:52Islam right
- 16:56but you know what a lot of those kids
- 16:59living in a lot of those very Muslim
- 17:02neighborhoods
- 17:03drug issues,
- 17:06suicidal ideiation, psychological
- 17:08issues,
- 17:10alcohol abuse,
- 17:13other problems,
- 17:15dying on a highway from speeding, racing
- 17:18your friend in a high-end BMW, an M5,
- 17:22just crashing into a pole, young
- 17:25teenagers, you know, just playing with
- 17:27guns.
- 17:29Different kind of problems. Where do
- 17:31those problems come from? Those problems
- 17:32were not there 20 years ago like that.
- 17:35You know where those problems came from?
- 17:37Prosperity.
- 17:39Prosperity brings its own problems.
- 17:42And the parents that built that
- 17:44six-bedroom house, one one and a half
- 17:47room per child,
- 17:50right? Where the children are arguing
- 17:53about I don't want to share a bathroom,
- 17:56right? And the the father when he was in
- 17:58university was sharing a a a room with
- 18:02six other guys and they would take turns
- 18:04going to sleep.
- 18:07Like he he was sharing a closet with a
- 18:10community
- 18:12and his kids are arguing about, hey, I
- 18:14don't want to keep making my bathtub
- 18:17wet. That's what a bathtub's supposed to
- 18:18be, [laughter]
- 18:20right? Oh, the level of like entitlement
- 18:24and ingratitude and
- 18:27just
- 18:28and then the those same people why did
- 18:31they invest so many millions and build
- 18:33this thing? They said we want our kids
- 18:34to come here,
- 18:36right? And those you'll see a lot of
- 18:38little kids in the masid and then you
- 18:40start seeing less and less teenagers.
- 18:42Then you start seeing less and less
- 18:44college students.
- 18:45There's a there's a leaky bucket and the
- 18:49little kids are coming with dad. little
- 18:51kids are coming with mom and as they get
- 18:53older and older,
- 18:55I just want to I just want to move to
- 18:56New York. I just want to move to
- 18:58California. I don't I don't want to be
- 18:59here. I hate Texas.
- 19:01Everyone's so spread out. I My parents
- 19:04are too too conservative for me. It's
- 19:06suffocating,
- 19:08etc., etc.
- 19:10Scary stuff.
- 19:13They follow the right thing, but then it
- 19:15will come with with its own.
- 19:18But the next generation might take all
- 19:19those same things for granted,
- 19:22right? All of those same things. You
- 19:24know what's crazy? Even this happened in
- 19:25Islamic history. I know it's disturbing,
- 19:27but I got to tell you this cuz you know
- 19:32the Sahaba used to be in the time of
- 19:34Jahyah and they used to make poetry in
- 19:37before Islam some of them and then they
- 19:40became Muslim and they made poetry after
- 19:42Islam. Right? Okay. They were called
- 19:45they they did poetry pre-Islam and
- 19:47poetry post Islam. And you can compare
- 19:50just how drastically their worlds
- 19:52changed pre and post Islam. Right?
- 19:56One of the things they used to pride
- 19:57themselves of before Islam is how we do
- 20:02when somebody when somebody attacks us,
- 20:04we attack them 100 times worse and we do
- 20:07more injustice than they could ever
- 20:09imagine. We are more jahil than anybody
- 20:12could ever be Jahil. And they were proud
- 20:13of it.
- 20:21No better nobody better act with us.
- 20:28then we're going to be a jah above any
