- 0:00Code sepsis. This is what doctors at the
- 0:03Cleveland Clinic hear when a patient
- 0:04develops sepsis, a bold alert for the
- 0:07number one leading cause of hospital
- 0:08deaths across the US, impacting
- 0:11millions.
- 0:11>> Sepsis is a life-threatening medical
- 0:13emergency caused by the body's response
- 0:15to infection. But now, doctors say
- 0:18there's a new tool to help fight it off.
- 0:20It's not an antibiotic or a medical
- 0:22device, it's AI. Just one example of how
- 0:25it's transforming medicine. Here, Dr.
- 0:28James Morrison says helping identify
- 0:30sepsis faster than ever before. A
- 0:32patient might come in reporting chest
- 0:34pain or something like that. You're
- 0:35going to be thinking of a heart attack.
- 0:37Sepsis might not be the first thing you
- 0:38think of. While you're focusing on the
- 0:40patient, talking to them about what's
- 0:41going on, and the data starts to come
- 0:43in, the AI can be working at the same
- 0:45time to say, "Does any of this fit with
- 0:47a pattern of sepsis?" The Cleveland
- 0:48Clinic, which has invested in this
- 0:50technology, showed us how it works in
- 0:52real time from a digital dummy patient,
- 0:55pulling data like heart rate,
- 0:56temperature, and oxygen levels. All of
- 0:59those are indicative to us that patient
- 1:01could have a new infection or sepsis.
- 1:04Last year across our system, we had over
- 1:0630,000 sepsis cases, about 2,000 deaths,
- 1:10and we've seen that our sepsis efforts
- 1:12have driven down those deaths by by
- 1:13hundreds per year. If their tool is like
- 1:16a security system constantly monitoring
- 1:18your body, in North Carolina, a spine
- 1:20surgeon is using AI differently. This is
- 1:22how I've often described it to patients
- 1:24is it tells me where I am, even though I
- 1:26may not know with my own eyes, just like
- 1:29a GPS in your car would do. Dr. Brett
- 1:31Rocque at Duke Health says this new
- 1:33technology gives him a 3D view of the
- 1:35patient's spine in real time. Made by
- 1:38Proprio, advanced sensors work to
- 1:40digitally replicate a patient's spinal
- 1:42anatomy. Dr. Rocque says the tool can
- 1:44help shorten complicated hours-long
- 1:47surgeries.
- 1:48What that means for the patient is
- 1:49they're having less anesthetic, less
- 1:51time asleep on the operating table, less
- 1:53bleeding. The AI tool is FDA-approved,
- 1:56already used in over 100 surgeries, with
- 1:59the company saying more hospitals are
- 2:01now set to test it. Meanwhile, back in
- 2:03Ohio, the Cleveland Clinic will also
- 2:05start testing the world's first
- 2:06neurological AI model that's not trained
- 2:08on text, but on electrical brainwaves.
- 2:11Seizures there are storms of electricity
- 2:13happening in the brain. Dr. Imad Najm
- 2:16runs the hospital's epilepsy center.
- 2:18Wow. This is the center and monitoring
- 2:20unit that we're looking at
- 2:22recordings, brainwave recordings, Ohio,
- 2:25Florida, or even in Abu Dhabi, United
- 2:28Arab Emirates. You can see people here
- 2:30in the UAE. Exactly. Wow.
- 2:35It's a patient who just had a seizure
- 2:37now. That that voice we just heard Yeah.
- 2:39Monitoring all these screens isn't easy
- 2:41with the human eye, but AI is always on
- 2:44and can more quickly recognize subtle
- 2:45patterns. We may be seeing something
- 2:48which is difficult to ascertain that it
- 2:50is a seizure or not. Our AI model will
- 2:53be able to detect it as early as 40-50
- 2:57seconds before. Kristen was diagnosed
- 2:59with epilepsy in 2016, but says despite
- 3:02the meds, her seizures haven't stopped.
- 3:04Now she's here looking for answers.
- 3:06They're bringing artificial intelligence
- 3:08or AI into that EEG. How would you feel
- 3:10about something like that? That'd be
- 3:11really cool. If it's something in as
- 3:13much as it's looking at those patterns
- 3:16to see if it can find like a trace, um
- 3:19that would be great. I don't want it to
- 3:21obviously take the role of clinicians
- 3:24who are there to help advise and make
- 3:26like ethical decisions. And it comes as
- 3:28people turn to AI for medical diagnoses,
- 3:31the next stage of what's dubbed
- 3:32cyberchondria, something experts
- 3:35caution. And the industry is also
- 3:36grappling with how to address strict
- 3:38data privacy laws. But doctors say it
- 3:40can still assist. Use artificial
- 3:43intelligence to complement human
- 3:46intelligence and using human
- 3:48intelligence to make the final decision.
- 3:51So it's still humans treating humans,
- 3:53now with a helping hand. Dr. Akshay
- 3:55Sura, NBC News, Cleveland, Ohio.
