- 1:24And now, the story.
- 1:27The year is 1819.
- 1:30The place is London, England.
- 1:33England is a powerful country.
- 1:36It has a great king, many soldiers, and
- 1:40large ships that sail across the whole
- 1:42world.
- 1:44But inside a quiet room in a large house
- 1:47called Kensington Palace, something very
- 1:51small and very important is happening.
- 1:55A baby girl is born.
- 1:58Her name is Alexandrina Victoria.
- 2:02But everyone will call her Victoria.
- 2:06She is small.
- 2:08She is quiet.
- 2:10She does not know it yet, but one day
- 2:12this small girl will become the queen of
- 2:16England.
- 2:17She will rule for 63 years,
- 2:21longer than almost any other king or
- 2:23queen in English history.
- 2:27Her story begins here,
- 2:29in that quiet room, in that great city,
- 2:33on a cold spring morning.
- 2:36And what a story it is.
- 2:40Victoria's father is Prince Edward.
- 2:43Her mother is Princess Victoria of
- 2:46Saxe-Coburg.
- 2:48They love their daughter very much,
- 2:51but life is not always kind.
- 2:54When Victoria is only 8 months old, her
- 2:57father becomes very ill.
- 3:00He does not get better.
- 3:03He dies.
- 3:05Victoria is now a small baby without a
- 3:08father.
- 3:10Her mother is alone in a large, cold
- 3:13palace
- 3:15with a very young child.
- 3:18Life will not be simple for this little
- 3:20girl.
- 3:21But something inside her is already
- 3:24strong,
- 3:25something quiet and steady,
- 3:28like a light that is just beginning to
- 3:31burn.
- 3:33Victoria grows up inside Kensington
- 3:36Palace.
- 3:37It is a big and beautiful building,
- 3:40but for a young child, it can feel cold
- 3:44and very empty.
- 3:46Victoria does not go to school with
- 3:48other children.
- 3:50She does not play freely outside.
- 3:53She does not have many friends.
- 3:55She lives under very strict rules.
- 4:00Her mother and a man named Sir John
- 4:02Conroy make all the decisions about her
- 4:05life.
- 4:06They do not want Victoria to speak with
- 4:09people alone.
- 4:11They watch her every moment.
- 4:13They control her every day.
- 4:17This system even has a name.
- 4:20People call it the Kensington system.
- 4:23And Victoria does not like it at all.
- 4:28She is lonely.
- 4:29She is quiet.
- 4:32But she is also very clever.
- 4:35She reads many books.
- 4:37She learns French, German, and Italian.
- 4:41She draws beautiful pictures.
- 4:44And she writes in her diary every single
- 4:47day.
- 4:49That diary tells us many things about
- 4:52her feelings.
- 4:53And one thing is very clear.
- 4:57Victoria wants to be free.
- 5:01She wants to make her own choices.
- 5:04She wants to live her own life.
- 5:08In those early years, she has one true
- 5:11and loyal friend. A small dog, a spaniel
- 5:16named Dash.
- 5:18Dash does not judge her.
- 5:21Dash does not control her.
- 5:24Dash simply stays quietly by her side.
- 5:28And sometimes, in a lonely life, that is
- 5:32enough.
- 5:34But Victoria's world is about to change.
- 5:39The old king of England, King William
- 5:41the Fourth, is getting older and weaker.
- 5:45And Victoria is his closest relative.
- 5:49Everyone in England knows what this
- 5:52means.
- 5:53Very soon, this lonely young woman will
- 5:57become queen.
- 5:59But is she ready for that journey?
- 6:03On the morning of June the 20th, 1837,
- 6:06Victoria is sleeping.
- 6:09She is only 18 years old. She is still a
- 6:12young woman.
- 6:13She does not know what this morning will
- 6:15bring.
- 6:17But then, very early,
- 6:19there is a knock at her door.
- 6:22Two men arrive.
- 6:24They bow their heads,
- 6:25and they tell her the news.
- 6:28King William IV is dead.
- 6:31Victoria is now the Queen of England.
- 6:36She listens.
- 6:37She is calm.
- 6:39She does not cry.
- 6:41She sits tall and still.
- 6:44She says only four words.
- 6:47"I will be good."
- 6:50Four small words,
- 6:52quiet and strong.
- 6:54And those four words say everything
- 6:57about her character.
- 6:59That same day, Victoria holds her first
- 7:02meeting with her royal advisers.
- 7:05These are older men, serious,
- 7:07experienced men.
- 7:09They expect a nervous young girl.
- 7:12But Victoria surprises them.
- 7:15She sits at the head of the table.
- 7:17She speaks clearly.
- 7:19She listens carefully.
- 7:21She makes decisions with real
- 7:23confidence.
- 7:25The men are amazed.
- 7:27This is not a nervous girl.
- 7:30This
- 7:31is a queen.
- 7:33Victoria moves out of Kensington Palace.
- 7:36She moves to Buckingham Palace.
- 7:39For the first time in her life, she has
- 7:42her own room.
- 7:44She makes her own schedule.
- 7:46She feels, for the first time,
- 7:49truly free.
- 7:51The Kensington system is over.
- 7:54A new adventure is beginning.
- 7:57And the whole world is watching this
- 7:59young woman take her first steps into
- 8:03history.
- 8:05A queen needs many things. She needs
- 8:08wisdom.
- 8:09She needs strength.
- 8:11She needs good advisers.
- 8:14But Victoria also needs something more
- 8:16personal.
- 8:18She needs a partner.
- 8:20Someone to stand quietly beside her.
- 8:23Someone to truly understand her.
- 8:27In 1839,
- 8:29a young man comes to visit her at the
- 8:31palace.
- 8:32His name is Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg
- 8:35and Gotha.
- 8:37He is Victoria's cousin.
- 8:39He is tall, quiet, and thoughtful.
- 8:43He loves music, science, and art.
- 8:46He is kind.
- 8:48He is serious.
- 8:50He is not like the loud and easy men of
- 8:52the royal court.
- 8:54Victoria sees Albert,
- 8:57and she feels something she has never
- 8:59felt before.
- 9:00That night, she opens her diary.
- 9:04She writes that Albert is wonderful,
- 9:07that his eyes are full of intelligence,
- 9:10that she feels happy and free when she
- 9:12is near him.
- 9:14In those days, a queen must ask first. A
- 9:18queen cannot wait.
- 9:21And so, Victoria asks Albert to marry
- 9:24her.
- 9:25He says yes.
- 9:27They are married on February the 10th,
- 9:291840.
- 9:31Victoria wears a white dress.
- 9:34At At
- 9:35most brides wear colored dresses.
- 9:38But Victoria chooses white.
- 9:41And after that day, white becomes the
- 9:44color of weddings across the whole
- 9:46world, even today.
- 9:49Together, Victoria and Albert are a
- 9:52strong team.
- 9:54He becomes her closest advisor, her
- 9:56greatest support,
- 9:58her best friend.
- 10:00They have nine children together.
- 10:03For many years, Victoria is not just a
- 10:06queen.
- 10:07She is a wife, a mother,
- 10:09and a woman who is deeply, truly happy.
- 10:14But happiness, as we all know, does not
- 10:17stay forever.
- 10:19In December of 1861,
- 10:22Prince Albert becomes very ill.
- 10:25He is only 42 years old.
- 10:28He is not old.
- 10:30He is not weak.
- 10:32But he grows sicker every day.
- 10:35Victoria sits by his side. She holds his
- 10:38hand.
- 10:39She watches him carefully.
- 10:42And on December the 14th,
- 10:44Albert dies.
- 10:47Victoria is broken.
- 10:49She cannot speak.
- 10:51She cannot eat properly.
- 10:53She cannot sleep.
- 10:55The whole country feels her deep
- 10:57sadness.
- 10:59Albert was not just her husband.
- 11:02He was the center of her world.
- 11:05Without him,
- 11:06everything feels cold and very dark.
- 11:11For many years after, Victoria wears
- 11:14only black.
- 11:15She keeps Albert's photograph everywhere
- 11:18in the palace.
- 11:19She sleeps with a cast of his hand
- 11:21beside her.
- 11:23She orders his clothes to be laid out
- 11:25every morning,
- 11:27as if he is still there.
- 11:30People begin to call her the Widow of
- 11:32Windsor.
- 11:33Some worry that the Queen is lost inside
- 11:36her grief.
- 11:38But time is patient.
- 11:41And life continues moving forward.
- 11:44Slowly, Victoria begins to return.
- 11:48She has a country to lead. She has
- 11:51children who need her.
- 11:53She has important work still left to do.
- 11:57She does not forget Albert. She never
- 12:00forgets him.
- 12:02But she learns to carry his memory
- 12:04gently,
- 12:06like something precious and dear.
- 12:09And she continues
- 12:11step by step,
- 12:13day by day.
- 12:15Perhaps this is her greatest act of
- 12:18courage.
- 12:20Not her power,
- 12:21not her crown,
- 12:23but simply
- 12:25continuing.
- 12:26Victoria rules England for 63 years.
- 12:30During her reign, that is the word for a
- 12:33monarch's time in power,
- 12:35England grows stronger and larger than
- 12:38ever before.
- 12:40This period in history has a name.
- 12:43People call it the Victorian era.
- 12:46It is a time of great invention, great
- 12:49discovery, and great stories.
- 12:53During her life, Victoria sees the
- 12:55invention of the train, the telephone,
- 12:58and the first electric lights.
- 13:00She sees her empire grow across the
- 13:03world.
- 13:04In 1876,
- 13:06she becomes the Empress of India.
- 13:09She is the grandmother of many kings and
- 13:12queens across Europe.
- 13:14People truly call her the grandmother of
- 13:17Europe.
- 13:18She is small in body. She is quiet in
- 13:22voice.
- 13:23But she is enormous in history.
- 13:27Victoria dies on January the 22nd, 1901.
- 13:32She is 81 years old.
- 13:34She has lived a full and extraordinary
- 13:37life.
- 13:38She began as a lonely child in a cold
- 13:41palace.
- 13:42She became a confident and powerful
- 13:45queen.
- 13:46She loved deeply
- 13:48and she lost deeply.
- 13:50She suffered
- 13:52and she continued.
- 13:54She never stopped moving forward. And
- 13:56when she died, the whole world stopped
- 13:59to remember her.
- 14:01Her story teaches us something important
- 14:04and true.
- 14:05Life is not always easy.
- 14:08Sadness will come.
- 14:10Loss will come.
- 14:12Change will come.
- 14:14But if we stay steady,
- 14:16if we keep our light burning, even
