20. 0:38Parish is telling the NBC 4 I-Team how
21. 0:41this amazing undercover sting went down
22. 0:44that helped make Brian Banks a free man.

26. 0:56minutes before her stunning confession
27. 0:59that she lied when she said the high
28. 1:01school football star raped her 10 years
29. 1:03ago.
30. 1:04This camera here was in a plant.
31. 1:06This is the man who helped Banks get the
32. 1:08now famous confession on hidden camera,
33. 1:11private investigator Freddy Parish.
34. 1:13There's only one chance to get the the
35. 1:15goods. I mean, you got to make it right
36. 1:17the first time.
37. 1:18Parish's son played football with Brian
38. 1:20Banks at Long Beach Polytechnic High in
39. 1:222002, the time Wanetta Gibson made her
40. 1:25false rape accusation. Gibson's family
41. 1:28got a million and a half dollar
42. 1:30settlement from the school district, and
43. 1:32Banks got 5 years in prison and 5 more
44. 1:34on parole, shackled with an ankle
45. 1:37monitor.
46. 1:37So, I know I'm not behind bars, and I
47. 1:39know I'm not locked up right now, but
48. 1:41I'm still very much incarcerated.
49. 1:43Then last year, Brian Banks got a
50. 1:44Facebook friend request from Wanetta
51. 1:46Gibson.
52. 1:47Mr. Banks called my son, Freddy, and
53. 1:49asked him, "What should I do?" My son
54. 1:51naturally says, "Hey, you got to call my
55. 1:53dad. He'll help you with this." Once I
56. 1:54was able to read the case,
57. 1:57there was no doubt in my mind that this
58. 1:58young man was innocent.
59. 2:00Parish devised a plan to clear Brian
60. 2:02Banks' name. He wired his office
61. 2:05We had a pin like this
62. 2:06with hidden cameras
63. 2:08sitting in this pin holder
64. 2:10and with microphones.
65. 2:11We had put the audio device in that tree
66. 2:13right there behind you.
67. 2:14The private eye suggested Banks first
68. 2:16invite Gibson to his office for a
69. 2:18friendly chat about their past.
70. 2:20all the scholarships, everything.
71. 2:22Brian Banks asks Gibson for help in
72. 2:25clearing his name.

74. 2:28but she's afraid of losing all that
75. 2:30money from her settlement.

79. 2:37a long time.
80. 2:39Now comes the hard part. Banks had to
81. 2:41convince Gibson to come back the next
82. 2:43day and talk to the private eye who was
83. 2:45helping free him.
84. 2:47I needed to get her to basically recant
85. 2:49everything that she said that Brian did
86. 2:5110 years ago. If I let this man down, I
87. 2:54would have to live with that the rest of
88. 2:55my life.

90. 2:58investigator Parish's questioning got
91. 3:01heavy.
92. 3:05Now the big question.

103. 3:30Well, the video tape is a slam dunk in
104. 3:32the sense that she's recanting her
105. 3:34testimony. She's specifically saying
106. 3:37that he did not rape her.
107. 3:39Parish has had big celebrity cases and
108. 3:41well-known clients, but this assignment
109. 3:44had a different kind of payoff.
110. 3:46Now, I had an opportunity to make a
111. 3:47difference in a man's life.
112. 3:50And finally, what about Wanetta Gibson
113. 3:53got all that settlement money after
114. 3:55making a false accusation? We asked the
115. 3:57DA's office and the school district if
116. 3:59they plan to try and recover it. They
117. 4:01wouldn't comment. But Banks' lawyer and
118. 4:03private eye say most of that million and
119. 4:06a half dollars settlement has probably
120. 4:08been spent.
121. 4:09You know, in fact, Joel, a lot of the
122. 4:11neighbors and even some friends have
123. 4:14come forward saying that money was spent
124. 4:15left and right and on a lot of things,
125. 4:18including cars, a lot of cars.
126. 4:21It is thought that she's gone through or
127. 4:23her family has gone through most of that
128. 4:24money. In fact, when she showed up for
129. 4:25that meeting,
130. 4:27she took a bus. Didn't even have a car
131. 4:28to drive. Want to point out one more
132. 4:30thing.
