- 0:09Hey guys, uh welcome to another Houdini
- 0:12tutorial. It's been a while, almost
- 0:15eight maybe nine years because I posted
- 0:18these ones
- 0:19on on Bimeo before.
- 0:24Um, but yeah, I'm going to we're going
- 0:27to create some hexagonal particles
- 0:31uh based
- 0:33on some R&D I did couple years
- 0:38[Music]
- 0:48ago. Heat. Heat.
- 0:55[Music]
- 1:00N. Heat. Heat. N.
- 1:07[Music]
- 1:35So,
- 1:37um the steps we are going to do in this
- 1:41tutorial is first we are going to create
- 1:43an external grid uh with some attribute
- 1:47transfer. From there we will create some
- 1:50simple particle simulation which will
- 1:53then drive some pyro simulation from
- 1:56these particles and then finally this
- 2:00pyroim will drive a grain simulation.
- 2:03That's basically
- 2:05um the steps on the tutorial.
- 2:09And this these are some renders of the
- 2:14result with some basic shading. Didn't
- 2:18spend too
- 2:20much.
- 2:23Um this is another one. I think on this
- 2:26one I inverted the the
- 2:29velocity and here was mixing some point
- 2:33deform along with the with the particle
- 2:36system. So yeah, let's dive into
- 2:39Houdini. So here's a new Houdini scene.
- 2:42I'm going to set my layout, my preferred
- 2:45layout by clicking here with
- 2:50the mouse wheel.
- 2:53And I'm going to create a
- 2:56geode and a
- 2:59circle. We will set this circle to CX
- 3:03plane with six subdivisions and open
- 3:08arc. And I'm going to rotate by
- 3:1330°. And now I'm going to create the
- 3:15pointer angle to create normals pointing
- 3:19out. So at n equals at
- 3:23p. If we check here we have
- 3:28this normals that we are now going to
- 3:30use as velocity. So at p equals at
- 3:35n and we can
- 3:38check probably will be hard to see but
- 3:42they are there. If
- 3:44we multiply by 10 you can see them.
- 3:50So next step we are going to create the
- 3:53grid. So we are going to duplicate.
- 3:56There are different ways to to do this.
- 3:59Uh but the this is the lazy one.
- 4:03So I'm going to create
- 4:05a
- 4:08duplicate and I'm going to translate one
- 4:13one4 with 20 copies.
- 4:18and another
- 4:21duplicate with two copies. And I'm going
- 4:23to set
- 4:25here
- 4:280.787 and minus
- 4:311.2. So we will have this and then we're
- 4:34going to
- 4:35create another
- 4:40duplicate with
- 4:443.02 and seven copies. So, we have
- 4:47this. They almost
- 4:51connect. And then I'm going to use a
- 4:53match
- 4:55size to put
- 4:58this match axis. Sorry.
- 5:08No match size. It was correct. So, we
- 5:11have this on the center on the scene of
- 5:13the scene. Now we're going to create
- 5:15a new
- 5:18camera and we are going to
- 5:22rotate minus 90 and 90. Let's
- 5:26see. So we have this
- 5:33and let's zoom in a
- 5:36bit. So now we have the the grid. Let's
- 5:40press L to
- 5:42organize. And let's put XA grid in
- 5:47here. So now we need to create
- 5:51the color transition that will be used
- 5:54as velocity after. So I'm going to use a
- 6:01blast and
- 6:04select
- 6:06130. And I'm going to put a color
- 6:11node. Set this to red. And I'm going to
- 6:15copy this one. And set this to
- 6:20blue. Now I'm going to use a transform
- 6:23node. This one in the isolated
- 6:27one. And we will set in frame 70.
- 6:33We will put this
- 6:35size at
- 6:3930. Center to
- 6:42origin. Click to create a key frame. And
- 6:45here we will set this to
- 6:47zero. So we will
- 6:49have this. And now I'm going to use a
- 6:54attribute transfer.
- 6:57We will
- 6:58transfer the
- 7:03color from this one to this
- 7:07one and in the con. So we will have
- 7:12this and we have to
- 7:14tweak the
- 7:17condition we will set zero here. frame
- 7:2245 we will
- 7:24set
- 7:264.5 and the
- 7:28blend. So we will have
- 7:33this. And
- 7:35now we will use an attribute promote to
- 7:39promote the
- 7:41color from
- 7:45point to primitive.
- 7:53And we will use a
- 7:56delete by
- 7:58expression at
- 8:01CD less
- 8:05than.5. And here I'm going to use a
- 8:09reample
- 8:11node. And we'll set this
- 8:13to 0.1. I think it's okay. So
- 8:24now we have more points for the normals
- 8:29and volume
- 8:31rasterize
- 8:34attributes
- 8:37and we will rasterize the V
- 8:44attribute 0.1 and 0.1
- 8:53one here I forgot to set attribute
- 8:59create
- 9:01sorry we'll create v attribute which is
- 9:06a vector and here we will also
- 9:11transfer the velocity. So now here we
- 9:14should
- 9:15have this velocity field. We can create
- 9:21a scatter scatter and a volume
- 9:25trail to see what is
- 9:28this sub points to trail
- 9:33velocities and we will have
- 9:38this. So let's put a null
- 9:42here and
- 9:45put out
- 9:48bell. So in this color we will
- 9:55put 3,00 we will create a new pop
- 10:01network and here we will set this
- 10:05to all
- 10:09points and pop back by
- 10:12volumes. We'll select
- 10:17the the velocity field we just created
- 10:20out
- 10:22bell. We will do this by force with a
- 10:25scale of
- 10:28two. And here on the birth we will put
- 10:32at
- 10:33f less than
- 10:3530. And we will create the pop color.
- 10:39Set this to ramp by
- 10:43age. And let's do something like
- 10:56this. Maybe set the scatter here
- 11:00to 30,000.
- 11:10So here I change uh few things. Uh on
- 11:15this point wrangle I multiply the
- 11:17velocity
- 11:19uh for two
- 11:23and then I change this transform that
- 11:27before we put center to origin.
- 11:31I just set this
- 11:34to as it was
- 11:36originally. So now we will
- 11:40have this. And if we go to the
- 11:44popnet, we will
- 11:50see these
- 11:55particles. And now we're going to create
- 11:58the wrangle. And we are going to
- 12:02say at
- 12:04B
- 12:08Y equals
- 12:10at
- 12:12CD X by
- 12:160.4 and we will get a bit
- 12:20of instead of flat a bit of depth on
- 12:26this. And now we're going to use this on
- 12:29a
- 12:30pyroim. So let's create a time
- 12:36shift. Going to set this as dollar ff
- 12:39minus
- 12:438.
- 12:45And a ripple node. I think this is from
- 12:50axis tools, but
- 12:52uh you can get like the normal ripple to
- 12:55create the same stuff.
- 12:58I'm going to use these parameters 4
- 13:0261
- 13:043.58 and on the hat I'm doing a
- 13:08animation from zero and in frame
- 13:1215 one one.2
- 13:152 and wave
- 13:19decay.14 speed two ripples three. So we
- 13:23will have this going
- 13:28on. And now I'm going to
- 13:30create pyrus a billowy smoke.
- 13:44I'm going to delete
- 13:49this and I'm going to use
- 13:54this source going to put here keep
- 13:59input
- 14:01and now we are going to use a attribute
- 14:04transfer to transfer the
- 14:06velocity from this
- 14:12popnet velocity
- 14:15And I'm going to bypass
- 14:19this. And here we are going to
- 14:24set
- 14:3104. No
- 14:370405
- 14:39maybe. And on the pyro, we are going to
- 14:43set the boxer size
- 14:47to
- 14:4905. And I'm going to put the velocity to
- 14:55copy
- 14:57and dissipation is okay. No buoyancy, no
- 15:04wind. And let's see.
- 15:14And we will have this pyroim which we
- 15:17will use on a
- 15:18grains to
- 15:27affect. So I'm going to take this and
- 15:30create a
- 15:32bound with 3 and 7 to create
- 15:38this. And I'm going to create a grain
- 15:43source. We can leave this at
- 15:49points not uniform
- 15:53values. Oh no, it's
- 15:58create
- 15:59uh veum
- 16:06grains. We can copy this particle
- 16:12separation. And now I'm going to put the
- 16:16time shift
- 16:17here. Frame
- 16:20one and the pop network.
- 16:26Let's put this a
- 16:28new set it to
- 16:31black out
- 16:34pyro. I'm going to copy this and came
- 16:39here. Let's put this to all
- 16:43points dollar f equals
- 16:481. And I'm going to use a pop at back by
- 16:51volumes again. This time set to
- 16:54velocity. I'm going to copy the
- 16:57pyro and let's use
- 17:00a pop color with a
- 17:04ramp from
- 17:11speed. So now we will have
- 17:16something like this.
- 17:24I'm going to create a
- 17:29cache. So, I'm going to set this to
- 17:340.5. And here we'll use an
- 17:37attribute
- 17:39delete. We're going to set
- 17:43color
- 17:45velocity age.
- 17:49Maybe ID and P
- 17:54scale and delete non
- 18:02selector. So let's put
- 18:07cache and let's put
- 18:10here exa tutorial.
- 18:14Okay. And let's
- 18:18make 75 frames.
- 18:27So now I have this
- 18:31cache and I'm going to use a attribute
- 18:35that's just color. This cames with the
- 18:39side effect
- 18:40labs and I'm going to set this to Y
- 18:43compute
- 18:45range. And now we will
- 18:48have this simulation.
- 18:52So you can use a red time three time
- 18:56node here if you want. You can slow
- 18:59down. Um I'm going to do like a super
- 19:03quick shading of this. So let's go back.
- 19:07Set this to
- 19:11particles. Let's put here particles.
- 19:14Render as
- 19:15particles 2 maybe.
- 19:18And I'm going to create the red shift
- 19:22light
- 19:23dome. I'm going to select an HDR in
- 19:28here. I'm going to take the
- 19:31[Music]
- 19:32saturation and the background.
- 19:36And I'm going to
- 19:41create I'm going to go
- 19:44to
- 19:46material red shift material
- 19:51builder red shift color user
- 19:54data and we will
- 19:58use a material
- 20:03blender red shift
- 20:07ramp. And here, let's see super quickly.
- 20:12Let's create this as
- 20:15gold, this
- 20:17as
- 20:21silver. So now you should have something
- 20:23like this. I set the scale to
- 20:2765. And here I set this
- 20:31ramp that you
- 20:37can
- 20:40modify. Uh use a basic lid and gold. You
- 20:45can set this to
- 20:47aluminum or whatever works or set your
- 20:51own materials. Want to do
- 20:54something quick?
- 20:56Um, and that's
- 21:00basically for this one.
- 21:28So
- 21:29yeah, let me know in the comments if you
- 21:31have any other ideas for tutorials. You
- 21:35can check on my
- 21:36Instagram. I have different uh making
- 21:40offs.
- 21:43[Music]
- 21:44These were some procedural robots that I
- 21:47did uh last year.
- 21:52Uh that was another idea for the
- 21:55tutorials
- 21:58or you can see some particles R&D. Uh
- 22:03whatever you you feel you would like for
- 22:05the next one. And yeah, that's it
