"Hopefully the world is still here when we are coming back!" - Interview with Heilung — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:04Hello. Hello. So today we are here with
- 0:07Kai, Maria and Christopher from Hong and
- 0:11this is Fousing.
- 0:22First things first uh how did you end up
- 0:26in Doling God?
- 0:29That is such a good question. I think
- 0:32that it started by some really clever PR
- 0:36people at Dolingo deciding to that the
- 0:38owl somehow died and they wanted to do a
- 0:41a ritual to resurrect it. And I think
- 0:44actually that we managed somehow to be
- 0:47what people are thinking about when they
- 0:49think
- 0:50ritual. Somehow our name must have come
- 0:53up when they Googled ritual music or
- 0:56something. But it's uh it was uh Yeah.
- 1:00Did Did you
- 1:01guys The car looks like a question. I
- 1:04was I was shown this by Martin
- 1:07yesterday. Oh my gosh. Okay. So, I saw
- 1:10it a few weeks ago and uh the day after
- 1:14I actually also not our music, but I
- 1:16heard people talking about it in the UK
- 1:19radio in the gas station. So, it it went
- 1:22quite a while. It has 4 million places.
- 1:24You know,
- 1:25Dualingo. Oh, they are having a they're
- 1:28starting a cult to resurrect the
- 1:30Dualingo owl and Hilong's music is
- 1:33underneath the the promotion campaign.
- 1:36That's an app to to to learn how to
- 1:38speak, right? Yes. Okay. So, why would
- 1:40why don't they put old Norse on it then?
- 1:42Yeah. Yeah. Or protogerermanic. Proger
- 1:44Germanic. Yeah. True. I think I think I
- 1:46think it's about time they get their act
- 1:48together. If you see this Dualingo
- 1:51protogermanic or old Norse should be
- 1:53part of your language database. Thank
- 1:54you. or ancient north ancient north
- 1:56coils right I'd like to ask you se
- 2:00question now um so you are starting a
- 2:03hiatus in August and u what prompted the
- 2:07hatus how long it would last because I
- 2:10would say for myself how long was around
- 2:13for a long time and it was such a big
- 2:15support for me personally and I guess
- 2:17for many people and now I felt a little
- 2:20bit sadness that it is going away what
- 2:24if it doesn't come
- 2:27back. So, um can you tell a little bit
- 2:30why you going there and how if whatever
- 2:33you can share about how long it will
- 2:35take?
- 2:37I think you said it very well at one
- 2:39point Kai that uh it takes
- 2:42um you need you need to withdraw to
- 2:46restore the the energy. Uh sometimes you
- 2:51you had you had something wise. Do you
- 2:52remember?
- 2:55Yeah. Retreat,
- 2:58reconnect,
- 3:00restore, and then return stronger.
- 3:04[Music]
- 3:05Yeah. I mean, it's not that uncommon.
- 3:07People need holiday, you know. It's a
- 3:10You're not going to have a holiday
- 3:12thing, you know. Ah, maybe. What does
- 3:15that mean? What is that? I don't know.
- 3:17No, but uh but uh but I heard it's nice.
- 3:22Okay. Yeah, we should try it. Yeah, we
- 3:23should try it. Maybe we should try it.
- 3:25Like like like we could maybe send like
- 3:26a picture from a beach or something
- 3:29like storing our energy with some pina
- 3:32coluladas and you know I don't know. I
- 3:35also I don't think it's a secret that we
- 3:37uh Haidong is uh constantly evolving
- 3:40very organically and um we we are
- 3:44continuously working on on new material
- 3:47and uh it's also good to to take a break
- 3:51to
- 3:52uh get more real uh with these plans.
- 3:56But we are taking a full year stop full
- 4:00stop. It's been extremely hectic since
- 4:03we came back after the pandemic. I think
- 4:06we've counted like 320 travel days per
- 4:10year. Um it's or something. 500 travel
- 4:14days a year. Yes. At least that's how it
- 4:16feels like. And uh yeah, Chris is uh
- 4:19building new uh things in his studio and
- 4:23uh we all establishing uh new homes. We
- 4:26all been moving around. So, it's
- 4:27something about taking a stop,
- 4:30establishing our base, re-establishing
- 4:33um ourselves, uh and uh yeah, getting a
- 4:37moment to breathe, to come back
- 4:39stronger. Hopefully, the world is still
- 4:41here when we're coming back because we
- 4:43are coming back. It is it is it is the
- 4:47I play on the moon. You'll play on the
- 4:49moon. Yeah. If Yeah. If that's the only
- 4:51option. I have a question for each of
- 4:54you. So since we are approaching that
- 4:58hayatus um maybe I wanted to do it a
- 5:02little bit of historical thing in this
- 5:04interview like can you tell what are the
- 5:08most things that stand out for you
- 5:09during the whole journey? An absolute
- 5:13golden moment for me was our performance
- 5:16at Minu
- 5:18Daragis because uh the whole setup was
- 5:22just amazing. There was the stage and
- 5:26instead of having like the barriers and
- 5:29like security there was just a river and
- 5:32then on the other side there were there
- 5:34was the audience and during our
- 5:38ceremony
- 5:41they they had built this gigantic wheel
- 5:45of like I don't have a clue 6 m
- 5:47diameters like a sun wheel and it was
- 5:50made from wood and straw and hay and all
- 5:53of that. And while we played like a lot
- 5:57of men gathered and they all had no
- 6:00shirt and they had torches and then they
- 6:03ran towards the wheel and set it in
- 6:05motion and put a torch in there and
- 6:09while we were performing that wheel
- 6:11started burning and spinning faster and
- 6:15faster and faster and like by the end it
- 6:18was just in
- 6:20full Oh, wow. Wow. And that had a I mean
- 6:24like the whole place was like an ancient
- 6:26burial ground of of some sort. And uh
- 6:29yeah, the whole setup and
- 6:31that wheel of fire that just ignited and
- 6:36like yeah spread his energy. That that
- 6:38is something I will never in my whole
- 6:40life forget. And that that was like for
- 6:42my pagan heart like a really
- 6:45really golden moment full of light
- 6:48literally. Yeah. You know, there's a
- 6:51picture where you see you standing and
- 6:53the whole wheel goes around your head.
- 6:56It's beautiful. Really beautiful. Yeah.
- 6:59Should I go?
- 7:01Um, I
- 7:03think there are thousands of highlights
- 7:07for this project, but I
- 7:09think I think meeting our friends from
- 7:14First Nations in in in the US and and in
- 7:19in Australia and New Zealand. I I
- 7:22wouldn't like or or Thailand. I think
- 7:25that that for me has
- 7:27been the highlight for me because it's
- 7:31it's a handshake. It's a handshake when
- 7:33you when you come with something that
- 7:35you have found within yourself and then
- 7:38you meet other people and and they they
- 7:41they have something from them and you
- 7:44can make an handshake and figure out how
- 7:46identical we actually are. I think that
- 7:48that is
- 7:49uh we have got a lot of good friends
- 7:51there and and that is something that
- 7:54will stay.
- 7:57Yeah, I mean um yeah, it's yeah, it's
- 8:01like you say a lot of uh memorable
- 8:03moments but um from from the beginning
- 8:06it was absolutely the first uh ritual we
- 8:09did on Castle Fest. I think going on
- 8:11stage not exactly knowing how it would
- 8:15be perceived. It was something we had
- 8:18carried very close to our heart for a
- 8:20long time and then bringing it into the
- 8:22world and then just feeling I was
- 8:25listening to Lea when we were practicing
- 8:26earlier and you can just feel the
- 8:28audience is
- 8:30like this extreme energy like everyone
- 8:34just collectively breathing and just
- 8:36screaming when Kai is screaming and it's
- 8:39like this whole energy exchange was
- 8:43something I've never ever experienced
- 8:45before and I get goosebumps every time I
- 8:47listen to it.
- 8:49Um, and then yeah, if we uh fast forward
- 8:53to only last summer, I think it was
- 8:55actually in Finland on the festival we
- 8:58did uh last summer was also extremely
- 9:02memorable. It was in daylight. Something
- 9:04that we uh said we would never do
- 9:07because the spirits come out after
- 9:09sundown and uh it has been it is a very
- 9:12important factor for us. But something
- 9:14about this very beautiful summer day
- 9:16where we were able to swim in the lake
- 9:19right behind the stage and this fresh
- 9:21cool fresh water just being completely
- 9:24refreshed and then going into makeup and
- 9:27um Katy, one of our warriors picked a
- 9:29beautiful flower uh crown for me that I
- 9:33was wearing uh on stage and it was just
- 9:35I just have this like this sweet taste
- 9:38of summer. You know how that is that
- 9:39that's very special feeling. So yeah,
- 9:42that was uh magical and
- 9:46yeah. Yeah, I think that's it.
- 9:52Can you uh tell me um about your
- 9:56connection with indigenous communities?
- 9:57What it means to you? Why it's
- 9:59important?
- 10:05For me it's uh is very important because
- 10:08uh as I as I mentioned before uh in the
- 10:12solo interview I'm working with core
- 10:14shamanism a lot and uh of course that
- 10:17involves the the studying of uh a lot of
- 10:22indigenous cultures including also the
- 10:26the Finnish the submi people
- 10:29And
- 10:31uh we as western or northern Europeans,
- 10:37the fire of our natural spirituality was
- 10:41relentlessly put out by Christianity in
- 10:45the early medieval time for Germany.
- 10:47It's it started already in the migration
- 10:49period. And uh we're not supposed to
- 10:53steal the wood from our brothers and
- 10:56sisters in Australia, in Finland,
- 10:59Sweden, wherever,
- 11:02America,
- 11:03Greenland. But we need to get our fire
- 11:07back. And that is how I see it. So I am
- 11:13just like Christopher me me me me me me
- 11:14me me me me me me me me me me me me me
- 11:14me mentioned before I am also overly
- 11:16happy whenever someone from this first
- 11:21nations from the indigenous cultures say
- 11:24yes we're coming to you we're coming to
- 11:27your stage and we're doing the blessing
- 11:29for you although it is very very
- 11:32difficult to actually get local locals
- 11:36so for example when we are performing in
- 11:39America in Colorado we have people
- 11:41coming that are rooted in California,
- 11:45even down to Mexican roots up to Canada,
- 11:48and they come and do the blessing for us
- 11:52also in Thailand where we performed of
- 11:54course in
- 11:56uh in Bangkok. But the people who did
- 11:58the traditional dance there, they did
- 12:00not perform the the actual dance that
- 12:03traditionally was performed in Bangkok,
- 12:04they were from a from a region further
- 12:06away. But nevertheless they represent
- 12:10people from the old culture of the
- 12:15region and uh that is like very much for
- 12:19us also the case like I was born in
- 12:21Midwest Germany Maria was born I don't
- 12:24know how many thousand kilometers away
- 12:26from me but still we are performing
- 12:29something European Scandinavian you know
- 12:32which dates of course a long a long
- 12:34while back and uh Uh there's this
- 12:38beautiful symbol like when we we find
- 12:42that especially in Sweden as a rock
- 12:44carving this plus with a circle around
- 12:48from the bronze age but we also find
- 12:50that that sun wheel as we call it. We
- 12:54find that in northern America there they
- 12:56call it the earth wheel and there that
- 13:00is also in color. It has it has four
- 13:02colors. It has the black color, the red
- 13:04color, the yellow color, and the white
- 13:06color. And one of the medicine people
- 13:10from the from the indigenous people
- 13:12there explained to me at one point what
- 13:15he sees in that. And he says it is the
- 13:17white people, the black people, the red
- 13:20people, and the yellow people all
- 13:22forming the wheel of the earth. And we
- 13:25all need to work together in order to
- 13:28make it go round. Literally
- 13:31I watched some interviews uh to get
- 13:34prepared to this one and um in the
- 13:36especially in the earlier interviews you
- 13:38tell that okay we amplify natural
- 13:41sounds. Is it still the same today or
- 13:45you added something more to the sound?
- 13:49No the concept of the band is the same.
- 13:52It's a non-political statement. It's a
- 13:55dive back in history. It's um it's we're
- 14:00not trying to dictate how it was. Um
- 14:03we're not we're not taking a dusty book
- 14:07down the shelf and and and trying to
- 14:09recreate something 100%. We are trying
- 14:12to give you a glimpse of how it might
- 14:14feel
- 14:15uh being in this and and uh the purpose
- 14:19is to heal. You know, it's it's an
- 14:22internal travel and an an external
- 14:24travel at the same time. And and in that
- 14:26we are using all sorts of sounds mostly
- 14:30from the north uh amplifying them
- 14:33u and and yeah trying to alter your
- 14:37state of mind that has not changed at
- 14:39all. How sanctity of the ritual and uh
- 14:44being on the entertainment events when
- 14:46people basically drunk beer and like
- 14:49having fun and kind of disconnect from
- 14:51reality in all possible ways. how it all
- 14:54works together. Is it a contradiction or
- 14:56not?
- 14:58It's a good question, but uh do did you
- 15:02have something? Well, for me it's uh
- 15:05sometimes very challenging uh to be
- 15:08honest like I I look in my life at a
- 15:11full decade of like absolutely no
- 15:13alcohol and uh I would consider that for
- 15:15me very very healing and uh I also
- 15:19suggest that out there for for the world
- 15:22to try that uh at one point but then
- 15:26again as Christopher said before or
- 15:28mentioned or hinted to it we're not here
- 15:31to judge. So, if you want to come to our
- 15:35performances and drink beer, why not? I
- 15:37mean, like, we even made a traditional
- 15:40beer at some point, right? But when it
- 15:44comes
- 15:46to that kind of stuff, drugs, like for
- 15:49me, beer, nicotine, coffee, that's all
- 15:53drugs,
- 15:55right? Stuff that alters your state of
- 15:58mind. Can be a drug, too. Can be a drug,
- 16:01too. May it be sex, may it be food,
- 16:03shopping,
- 16:04whatever. It's always it's always
- 16:07playing with fire, right? The moment you
- 16:08lose
- 16:10balance, literally or just in your life,
- 16:13you enhance your problems instead of
- 16:15solving them, right? So it's
- 16:18always take care, keep balance and uh we
- 16:22will not judge you know whatever
- 16:24whatever you eat, whatever you drink
- 16:27before you come to our performance is
- 16:29like everyone out there is responsible
- 16:31for him or herself and uh how we look at
- 16:34it
- 16:36inside the the performance crew that's
- 16:38also very very individual. There's
- 16:40people who never drink and then there's
- 16:42people who drink on a regular basis.
- 16:45There's people who smoke. There's people
- 16:46who never smoke. There's people who eat
- 16:48pork. There's people who never would eat
- 16:51any animal. Right. And there's also
- 16:53internally no judgment.
- 16:57I think also Yeah. that of course we
- 17:00appreciate uh when people are respectful
- 17:02to their surroundings and uh come in
- 17:05with a a sense of uh taking care of each
- 17:08other. And if you see someone in the
- 17:10audience who who needs a hand, go give
- 17:13it. And yeah. Yeah. just be be gentle
- 17:16with your environment and yeah besides
- 17:18that I I completely agree. Did you just
- 17:21suggest that people should
- 17:26give I mean I'm pretty I'm pretty sure I
- 17:30haven't already several times. I have
- 17:33actually seen it on front row for sure.
- 17:37For sure. I love that. Many times I love
- 17:39that. Nothing. Yeah. Keep on giving a
- 17:42hand or two then also it will definitely
- 17:45give right yes definitely put you in the
- 17:48right state of mind anything you like
- 17:50ass head hand I don't care
- 17:53let's move on
- 17:55what amazes me about how long so I've
- 17:58been to Nordic fall concerts before and
- 18:00they work very well in closer spaces
- 18:02like Gilder Holland in
- 18:05Mardut and maybe it's a bit nerdy
- 18:07question maybe very technical what do
- 18:10you think
- 18:11what special sound makes it possible to
- 18:15entrance the audience in arenas like
- 18:19yeah that's a good question um it's a
- 18:22very very good question and it's
- 18:24something that you will see high move
- 18:27way more into in the future um um and um
- 18:32and here I'm actually talking about
- 18:35something as technical as immersion
- 18:37right because what is it right what is
- 18:39it that makes you immersed in in in a
- 18:42specific setting when you when you are
- 18:46at a concert, right? And and or a ritual
- 18:49or both as we are. Uh and and it's not
- 18:53only the sounds, you know, there is of
- 18:55course elements in the sound that will
- 18:57attempt to to do something that we
- 18:59believe will alter your state of mind,
- 19:01but there's also another layer in what
- 19:03we're doing that is of course on Kai's
- 19:06table in the spiritual realm.
- 19:08[Music]
- 19:10Um in the end we are all people right we
- 19:14are in
- 19:15a setting normally I dare to say that
- 19:19it's very different from a setting when
- 19:22you come to a high ritual
- 19:26uh and we bring everything with us to
- 19:29make it as much as possible how we want
- 19:32it. So here in Finland for instance, we
- 19:35are transforming a ice hockey skating
- 19:38hole into a ritual round, right? Uh I
- 19:42think a
- 19:43normal day in that ice hockey hole is
- 19:47way different than when we are there,
- 19:49right? So we bring lights and sounds and
- 19:52our own speakers, our own states, our
- 19:55own carpets, our own everything, right?
- 19:58We don't borrow anything here really
- 20:00except from the trees. the trees we we
- 20:02we we bring with us. Yes. So, what we
- 20:05try to do is of course turn off the
- 20:08light, right? So, you don't see your ice
- 20:11skating hole, right? Um but there's more
- 20:14needed than that, you know, and and and
- 20:17half of that travel, I believe, at least
- 20:20half of that travel is happening inside
- 20:22of people themselves. Having a a a thing
- 20:26put up like this cannot work if there's
- 20:29only a sender and no receiver because
- 20:31that receiver has to with in the person
- 20:34taking it whatever that is the the the
- 20:37auditory the visual the the inner stuff
- 20:40the spiritual whatever something that
- 20:42happens inside the person themsself that
- 20:44they need to convert into something that
- 20:46is meaningful right and it demands
- 20:49something of people to be open right of
- 20:52course it looks great inside a gilhole
- 20:54but I can tell you at this size we have
- 20:56now I don't think we would even be able
- 20:58to fit the drummers in there right you
- 21:01know uh you can also say oh it's always
- 21:03best outside in a forest I don't agree
- 21:06necessarily we're playing very loud
- 21:07sounds right I don't want to give a
- 21:09heart attack to all the sleeping birds
- 21:10either right and stuff like that there's
- 21:12lots of things we need to consider when
- 21:14how we can make a thing as respectful as
- 21:17possible right and a lot of it comes
- 21:19from the inside right and that goes for
- 21:21the people attending also Right. Uh so I
- 21:25think we can close the eyes almost
- 21:26everywhere we are on the planet and if
- 21:29we close our eyes and and and really
- 21:31look inwards we will see the things that
- 21:34are important no matter how shitty it
- 21:36looks around us right uh so uh and of
- 21:40course we we do take a lot of care on a
- 21:43technical scale to to make it sound nice
- 21:45also. Yeah, I think that's also what uh
- 21:48is a bit curious uh to to hear more
- 21:51about like is there some secrets we can
- 21:53share? No, but right now how I know that
- 21:56we have uh two extra people with us to
- 21:59help tune the audio system to fit the
- 22:03surroundings. Right. So us bringing
- 22:05bringing we don't do an actual immersive
- 22:08setup on this because it's way too heavy
- 22:11to carry but but actually the sound you
- 22:14have been hearing on our last solo shows
- 22:16has been our own stuff we have brought
- 22:18already to make it sound as great as
- 22:19possible. So we have the best techniques
- 22:22there from what what money can buy but
- 22:24they're there to be invisible so that it
- 22:26just sounds great no matter what. And
- 22:28you if you start thinking about oh
- 22:30that's a speaker then you you have kind
- 22:32of broken the the the the immersion
- 22:35right but what we have done this time is
- 22:37also try to save ourselves a little bit
- 22:39because we have a lot of bass in our
- 22:41sounds and it can be quite horrible to
- 22:43to feel on stage sometime because it's
- 22:46kind of feel like you are having two
- 22:47hours worth of earthquake while while uh
- 22:50performing. So, we are now trying to
- 22:53hang half of it up in the roof so we
- 22:55don't die on stage, which is nice, you
- 22:57know, stuff like that. So, there's a lot
- 22:59of stuff going on. There's a lot of good
- 23:01people working for us uh that that does
- 23:04a fantastic job in in in in creating the
- 23:08both the visual and the audio visual
- 23:10space.
- 23:12For me, one of those kind of seminal
- 23:15moments in
- 23:17Hilong body fork is when you released
- 23:20Anuana. It's one of my favorite songs.
- 23:23Uh so I use this opportunity to ask how
- 23:26the song was created and how the music
- 23:29video came uh alive.
- 23:32Yeah, I'd like to talk a little bit
- 23:34about that because uh Yeah. Well, um the
- 23:38song was created. Uh maybe you can take
- 23:39that part and I can take the um video
- 23:42part. You take the video part. Yes. But
- 23:44the song it's Yeah. to start with the
- 23:47with the video part. It's uh was the
- 23:49first time that we tried to collaborate
- 23:51with um uh producers which was not
- 23:54ourselves. We've been making everything
- 23:55ourselves especially because Chris is
- 23:58particularly good at it. Chris is only
- 24:00also one person. So we realized that
- 24:03it's it's good to to try to get some
- 24:05help. And um uh the choice fell on a
- 24:09movie company from Tron uh called Helmet
- 24:13um because uh one of our friends had
- 24:15worked with them before and she
- 24:16recommended to have a chat and I come
- 24:19into Lena the director's uh office with
- 24:22uh we arranged a coffee meeting and I
- 24:24put on the song and I instantly I see
- 24:27her close her eyes and go kind
- 24:30of you know this when she she was just
- 24:33listening so intently and then She she
- 24:35actually also felt a little tear like
- 24:37she she got instantly very moved by the
- 24:40piece and then I knew like okay yes I
- 24:42think we have our people I think uh this
- 24:44is going to work and what she did was
- 24:46basically to take a few um uh a few
- 24:50words from us meaning um there's one we
- 24:54don't know the lyrics we don't know the
- 24:56meaning of the lyrics it's all ancient
- 24:58uh and lost to us there's a few words we
- 25:00know and one of them is lamb warrior
- 25:02which means protector of the hand. And
- 25:05she used that word to imagine a maybe
- 25:10parallel universe where children can be
- 25:12born with magical powers to resurrect
- 25:15animals and connect with um with the
- 25:18land.
- 25:20Um and um yeah, so she
- 25:23uh she basically uh created a a perfect
- 25:29example on how you can take Hilong's
- 25:32universe and then uh elaborate on it.
- 25:36What can happen in a Hilong world? What
- 25:40will the tribe do to gather strength? uh
- 25:44they will dance around the fire in the
- 25:46lunar eclipse and uh you know fight for
- 25:50for this uh the girl who who has has
- 25:53these powers. So it was it was a very
- 25:55beautiful interpretation and uh a very
- 25:58very uh wonderful to see that sometimes
- 26:01it it actually works to collaborate with
- 26:04people from the outside because it's uh
- 26:07it's it was a bit of nerve-racking for
- 26:09us to to to let that part go. But we
- 26:13were of course side by side with them
- 26:16for the entirety of the process. But
- 26:18yeah this the lyrics come from ancient
- 26:20Roman brackets, right? Uh ancient
- 26:22Germanic bactiates. through German which
- 26:24are inspired by Roman coins. Yes. Um,
- 26:28Anuana was the perfect song to delegate
- 26:31the video, to outsource the video
- 26:33because uh it has this openness that we
- 26:36have we have no idea what it means which
- 26:39is like different like our first video
- 26:41for example is uh is very different
- 26:44because there we know exactly what the
- 26:45rune spell means and the actual rune
- 26:47spell is also appearing in the video and
- 26:50it's also uh the the Rupo video it's
- 26:54very very close to the lyrics Even even
- 26:56the movements in the Noobo video are
- 26:59like like one to one the uh the lyrics
- 27:03but uh
- 27:06Anoana
- 27:07is very very open you know there's so
- 27:10much room for for interpretation that
- 27:12there was apparently enough room for an
- 27:15external company to make something
- 27:16absolutely amazing right
- 27:22I think you guys handle popularity very
- 27:25well Because when I talked to people who
- 27:28were at the start of the project like
- 27:30Toni Sharian, she said like you called
- 27:33her to do some little cool thing on the
- 27:36side, nothing big. And now uh Hilong is
- 27:40super popular and I think everyone in
- 27:44Hilong handles the popularity very well.
- 27:48So, but how do you perceive like as a
- 27:50popular people who like have so much
- 27:52attention, how do you perceive that
- 27:54popularity and how do you manage to stay
- 27:57sane
- 27:59by by closing the doors to the studio
- 28:02when I'm working? Uh, I think
- 28:05um
- 28:08and I think I think it's wonderful.
- 28:10Hilong gets gets the attention it needs.
- 28:13You know, we we can probably say that
- 28:16when, you know, Hilong sort of took up
- 28:18with with the Leaper thing, we didn't
- 28:20post money in the project to put it down
- 28:23people's throat, we didn't in any way um
- 28:27um make commercials and stuff like that.
- 28:29We just let it out and people can choose
- 28:32themsel if they want to play with us,
- 28:34right? Um, and and and I think that is
- 28:38its core is the Hilong is is to to
- 28:40people what people choose it to be,
- 28:43right? Um, of course it's it's crazy to
- 28:46see a lot of people uh tattooing Maria's
- 28:49face on their leg and uh and and all
- 28:52these things. Um and and and see how
- 28:54much it means to people, right? Uh but
- 28:56like in my daily life, for instance, I I
- 28:59don't really I don't see that much, you
- 29:01know? We we all live quite in in in
- 29:04desolate areas and and and spend a lot
- 29:06of time in nature and and and have a
- 29:10little group of people surrounding us,
- 29:12right? Uh of course when we travel and
- 29:14we meet people that of course it it's
- 29:16very much visible but I don't think in
- 29:18any way it's it's in any way harming or
- 29:21anything. people are very nice and
- 29:23careful and you know and I think it you
- 29:26know for people that that that really
- 29:28understand this kind of thing for most
- 29:30people they they also have another type
- 29:32of respect when meeting people right uh
- 29:35and and and as as I said before in a
- 29:38performance hung is as much for anyone
- 29:40in the audience as it is on the people
- 29:42on stage so no one is above anyone in in
- 29:45in that sense that is a good meaning for
- 29:48me also when we say we are all brothers
- 29:50Right. Um I believe we said once when we
- 29:53released um uh Fua that we are not equal
- 29:57but we are of equal value and and that I
- 29:59think sums it up for me basically how I
- 30:02navigate it. also think you you put the
- 30:05finger on the nail, the hammer on the
- 30:08nail. Finger finger finger under the
- 30:10nail. uh when you said that uh about the
- 30:13commercial because Hilong never um never
- 30:17made it and hopefully never will make it
- 30:20to the mainstream uh media in regards to
- 30:25getting that type of attention is is
- 30:29just annoying because that means people
- 30:32just want a piece of you because you
- 30:34have been um on television or are being
- 30:37played in the radio. They're not
- 30:39necessarily interested in what you do or
- 30:41why you do it, but it's the fame that
- 30:43becomes the important factor. And I've
- 30:45seen this only once and it was it
- 30:49shocked me. But we were sitting in a
- 30:51restaurant in Michigan eating a pizza, a
- 30:54group of us chatting, having a cozy
- 30:56time, and then there's a girl
- 30:58approaching our table that is like, "Uh,
- 31:01who are you?" And we're like, "Uh, oh,
- 31:03we're just some people having some
- 31:04pizza. Uh, have a nice evening." Trying
- 31:06to kind of roll it off. But it became
- 31:08very obvious that she was only in she
- 31:11she started asking like could I have a
- 31:13picture? Could I have an autograph? But
- 31:14she had no idea who we were. But she had
- 31:16a perception that we were someone. So
- 31:19she had to be interested. And you look
- 31:21like someone. We look like someone, you
- 31:22know. And that was like to me, wow, I'm
- 31:25so relieved that uh people like that
- 31:28actually don't, you know, know who I am
- 31:30because they will probably just leave me
- 31:32alone because our fans or listeners uh
- 31:36are extremely respectful as Chris also
- 31:38mentioned and and never feel um harassed
- 31:42or uh like very humble and often they
- 31:45come with a very personal story of
- 31:47something good that our music has done
- 31:49for them or their families or loved
- 31:51ones. And it's just uh it's just
- 31:54beautiful and makes me very happy to be
- 31:57um part of all of this. I mean there was
- 31:59one time where there was a fan breaching
- 32:01our security. I think it was in Canada
- 32:03and and I was standing building up on
- 32:05stage and the guy comes in front of me
- 32:07and he looks at me. I'm like so yeah who
- 32:10I start talking to me. I was like he was
- 32:11kind of a nice guy and then all of a all
- 32:13of a sudden he was like maybe I
- 32:15shouldn't be here. I like yeah maybe you
- 32:18shouldn't. Okay. Hi. You know and he
- 32:20left. Yeah, I mean he just got a little
- 32:24like he just walked in, you know. I
- 32:26mean, of course, the the security
- 32:28personal was a bit wild afterwards, but
- 32:30but but my point was that it was only
- 32:32big respect really, you know, and and
- 32:34and hopefully that that is of course not
- 32:37something we we we applaud that people
- 32:39should be when we are building up. But
- 32:42but my point is that respect is is
- 32:45important, right? In UK, how do you
- 32:47handle things? Oh, how do I stay sane?
- 32:50Yeah. Have I ever been sane? I would
- 32:53totally classify myself as insane and
- 32:55like I I'm still discovering how insane
- 32:57I am.
- 33:01So
- 33:03no whatever it that aspect of of my work
- 33:07is really not relevant for me. I somehow
- 33:10feel that you are immune completely. All
- 33:13of you are of course but you
- 33:15especially. So for the last question,
- 33:18what you can say to your listeners?
- 33:22I would love for all of you to enter um
- 33:26the room with the ritual with an open
- 33:29mind and uh the greatest love and
- 33:31respect for everyone around you and open
- 33:35all the doors inside you and just let
- 33:37everything in. And if anything feels too
- 33:40much or too harsh, try to ask yourself
- 33:43the question, why does it feel too much
- 33:46or too harsh? Is it something there that
- 33:49scares me? And why does it scare me? ask
- 33:52some questions because this is very much
- 33:55what we hope that you will get out of a
- 33:58live experience with us is
- 34:01to expand your expand your mind and uh
- 34:04leave the room a larger person than you
- 34:07were when you
- 34:12entered. Be gentle. Be gentle to
- 34:15yourself. Be gentle to the animals in
- 34:18your care. Be gentle to the children in
- 34:21your care. Be gentle to your
- 34:24neighbor, to your
- 34:28surrounding. I very much agree to this.
- 34:30I think um calm the down really. Um
- 34:35I believe that that is needed
- 34:38and enjoy yourself. It is nice to be
- 34:42alive.
- 34:44Thank you so much for your time. It was
- 34:47a great pleasure talking to you and good
- 34:49luck with your tour. Thank you so much
- 34:51for having us. Thank you.
- 34:59[Applause]
