HOOF ABSCESS BURSTS during trimming! — Transcript

- 0:00So, I didn't see this cow walking into
- 0:02the crush, but her foot tells me that
- 0:05she must have been incredibly lame. This
- 0:07is the hoofgp and a proper release of
- 0:11pressure.
- 0:11[Music]
- 0:20[Applause]
- 0:24[Music]
- 0:34So, we just picked up this foot. I'm not
- 0:36sure No, I was going to say I'm not sure
- 0:37if you'll be able to see it, but look.
- 0:39Now I've Now I've picked the pad up, you
- 0:41can see it clear as day.
- 0:42[Music]
- 0:47That's not supposed to be there,
- 0:48obviously.
- 0:49[Music]
- 0:51Feels all swollen around the whole
- 0:53coronet, actually, right around there.
- 0:56Oh,
- 0:57and it does not smell fantastic. Right.
- 0:59So, we know exactly what the problem is
- 1:01here. She has an This hidden beneath
- 1:04these layers of hoof horn. We balance
- 1:06out that inner claw and start reducing
- 1:08the overall height of the outer claw,
- 1:11but when looking from the side here, you
- 1:12can see there's not actually all that
- 1:14much overgrowth. These cows' feet are
- 1:16very well looked after, but something
- 1:19has gone wrong for this cow. She's had
- 1:21some kind of accident, and that accident
- 1:23has led to this painful problem. We
- 1:26finish the trim off by preparing the
- 1:28inner claw ready for a block and
- 1:30beginning the model with a grinder just
- 1:32to speed the process up with a knife and
- 1:34give us less to do manually. Right.
- 1:39I think actually we'll just get the
- 1:40block on straight away and give it lots
- 1:41of time to cure because it's quite cold
- 1:43today.
- 1:45Large or small?
- 1:46Uh large, please, Craig.
- 1:49That okay?
- 1:50Just No, thicker one. Craig was asking
- 1:52there. We've got two types of large
- 1:54blocks. So, we So, we actually asked for
- 1:56some large blocks from one of our
- 1:57suppliers, and they did send us large
- 1:58ones, but they weren't as thick as
- 2:00usual. So, he's wanting to use them up,
- 2:03but I would need this cow to be
- 2:04completely up off the ground because
- 2:05it's a sore sore lesion, so we're using
- 2:07the thicker blocks. We pretty much
- 2:09always want to use the thicker blocks,
- 2:10to be honest, but sometimes we can use
- 2:12these thinner blocks,
- 2:15which we do need to do just to use them
- 2:16up on problems which aren't quite so
- 2:18serious.
- 2:19Right. With that done, we can
- 2:22see what else is hiding underneath this,
- 2:24although I say that like we don't know.
- 2:27Fairly sure we all know exactly what's
- 2:28going to happen here.
- 2:32Very, very familiar smell of
- 2:36decaying hoof horn.
- 2:40How far up does that go?
- 2:44Yeah, it goes all the way I can feel it
- 2:46all the way up here.
- 2:49Just because I can feel it all the way
- 2:50up there does not mean that I can just
- 2:53take away huge slivers of hoof horn
- 2:55because it could still be perfectly fine
- 2:58in some areas. So, if I was
- 3:00impatient and took too much off, I could
- 3:03cause real problems.
- 3:05So, we're going to thin the whole of
- 3:07this sole down because we want to get
- 3:08the weight away from the entire
- 3:11heel area.
- 3:14It's not just where the problem is
- 3:16because when you're when you've got a
- 3:17problem, obviously, it's not localized
- 3:19to that tiny little spot. I'm talking
- 3:22about you and I. I mean, if you have a
- 3:23sore elbow, then your upper arm starts
- 3:26to hurt, and your lower arm starts to
- 3:27hurt, and everything because of that
- 3:29problem in your elbow.
- 3:35Getting to the delicate part of the trim
- 3:36now, aren't we?
- 3:38You see, I'm genuinely not sure if that
- 3:40is corium or
- 3:42part part of the problem right there
- 3:45here, obviously. I think it's corium
- 3:47under there.
- 3:49But I don't want to leave anything
- 3:50either, do I?
- 3:58Just keep So, try to stick to the parts
- 4:01that we definitely know need to come up
- 4:03come away, and then we hope that the
- 4:05rest kind of shows its hand so that we
- 4:08can understand. See, now I'm doing that,
- 4:10I'm thinking, "Oh, no, actually, maybe
- 4:11it's
- 4:12part of the problem."
- 4:17Right.
- 4:18I can definitely take this part away, so
- 4:22I think this will be messy.
- 4:27Again, that's periople horn there, so
- 4:29you can see
- 4:31it's sort of baggy because we've
- 4:33let some of the fluid out.
- 4:37Not enough of the fluid out, by the look
- 4:39of it. Oh, bubbles.
- 4:47[Music]
- 4:50This is going to come away, a bit of it
- 4:52anyway.
- 4:54So, we'll just tease it up with my
- 4:55fingers.
- 4:56Snip away with a knife.
- 5:00Just peel so I can understand what
- 5:02what's happening. Oh, a mess, and look.
- 5:05Pull all of this
- 5:07gunk out.
- 5:09Need to get this bit out as well.
- 5:16Right.
- 5:18Let's get the whole area saturated with
- 5:21iodine and let it soak in salicylic acid
- 5:23because it is definitely fairly open,
- 5:25isn't it? She's going to feel it so much
- 5:27better. Like I said, I didn't see her
- 5:29walking to the crush, so I can't tell
- 5:31you whether she was crippled. I can't
- 5:32tell you any of that. What I can tell
- 5:34you is that if I had that in my foot, I
- 5:37would be in a huge amount of pain, and
- 5:40I wouldn't be touching the ground. I
- 5:42know she would be. This cow's
- 5:44pain threshold is so high, but I
- 5:47definitely would be in a massive amount
- 5:49of pain.
- 5:50Right. Hopefully,
- 5:52we've helped the old girl.
- 5:54Really interesting to see her actually
- 5:55walking.
- 5:57[Music]
- 6:01Right.
- 6:03[Music]
- 6:12I know, I know, I know. I know, but
- 6:14hopefully, we've helped you a lot. So,
- 6:16letting her out of the crush here, I
- 6:18have all my fingers and all of my toes
- 6:20crossed hoping that she can put her foot
- 6:22on the ground and that that block does
- 6:25what it's intended to.
- 6:27She's in anything but pain for you, I
- 6:30can tell she.
- 6:31The block is definitely helping, and the
- 6:34release of that pressure should be an
- 6:36immense relief for her. So,
- 6:39hopefully, we've done her a good
- 6:41service.
- 6:48Mhm.
