- 0:03well dur during the terrible days of the
- 0:06Blitz from September 1940 to May of
- 0:101941 there was this intense bombing
- 0:14campaign by Nazi Germany against the
- 0:17United
- 0:18Kingdom a father and his small
- 0:22son a father holding his small son's
- 0:25hand ran from a building that had been
- 0:28struck from a bomb
- 0:30in the front yard was a shell
- 0:33hole seeking shelter as quickly as
- 0:36possible the father jumped into the hole
- 0:39and held his arms up for his son to
- 0:43follow terrified yet hearing his
- 0:46father's voice not being able to see him
- 0:49telling him to jump the boy replied I
- 0:52can't I can't see you the father looking
- 0:55up against the sky tinted in Red by the
- 0:58burning buildings called called to the
- 1:00silhouette of his son but I can see you
- 1:05jump the boy had great fear but he
- 1:08jumped because he had faith in his
- 1:11father the father caught
- 1:14him in today's Gospel we meet two people
- 1:18facing Health
- 1:21crisises the first was jeras a synagogue
- 1:24official and the second was this unnamed
- 1:27woman who was afflicted with hemorrhages
- 1:31the synagogue official came to Jesus
- 1:33because his daughter was about to die
- 1:35and the woman approached Jesus because
- 1:37no one had been able to help
- 1:39her both of these people were anxious
- 1:43and upset and both took a risk in
- 1:45approaching Jesus each of them
- 1:48approached Jesus in a different way but
- 1:50they both had deep trust and they had
- 1:55faith I want to look more closely at
- 1:58these two people beginning with jaras
- 2:00who pleaded with Jesus to save his
- 2:03daughter's
- 2:04life all parents feel anxiety when their
- 2:08children are seriously ill you can
- 2:10almost hear the anxiety in Jar's voice
- 2:13as he approaches Jesus he says my
- 2:16daughter is at the point of death please
- 2:20come and lay your hands on her that she
- 2:22may get well and
- 2:24live jaras his love for his daughter
- 2:27overrode the risk that he took and
- 2:30approaching
- 2:31Jesus as a lay man who managed the
- 2:34synagogue activities and finances he
- 2:37knew that he would be criticized by
- 2:40some for seeming to put his faith in
- 2:44Jesus besides jeras knew that Jesus's
- 2:47last visit visit to a synagogue did not
- 2:50go very well many people rejected
- 2:54Jesus's words and some wanted to kill
- 2:57him in approaching Jesus Jerry ra his
- 3:00risk not only criticism but also a fall
- 3:03from grace he was putting everything on
- 3:06the
- 3:07line even so he threw caution to the
- 3:09wind just as parents often do to save
- 3:12their
- 3:13children and so he did and Jesus
- 3:18responded to jarus
- 3:20compassionately after Jesus received the
- 3:22news that his daughter had died the
- 3:24disciple tried to Scuttle his visit to
- 3:27jus' house but Jesus overr
- 3:30them as he went Jesus reassured jerus
- 3:34Don't Be Afraid just have
- 3:38faith to his credit jerus took Jesus at
- 3:41his word he
- 3:43believed raising up jer's daughter Jesus
- 3:46wielded the power of God over life and
- 3:49death everyone including Jesus's closest
- 3:52followers were
- 3:54astounded we can all imagine that Jesus
- 3:57began to follow Jesus that same same day
- 4:01right then and there he gave his life to
- 4:05Christ along the way to jerus his house
- 4:08a woman with heres approaches
- 4:11Jesus her particular Affliction not only
- 4:14drained her strength but also rendered
- 4:16her unclean under the law of Moses and
- 4:19this meant that she was something of an
- 4:22outcast uh marginalized from people
- 4:26moreover she had spent her money on
- 4:28doctors who wen't on were unable to cure
- 4:33her unlike jaras she did not make a
- 4:36direct request to
- 4:38Jesus rather because of her lowly status
- 4:42she tried to approach Jesus
- 4:45anonymously with fear and
- 4:48trembling in her desperation she plunges
- 4:52through the crowd confident that Jesus
- 4:55would be able to cure her if only she
- 4:58could just get near very close to him to
- 5:01touch his
- 5:03clothes the moment she did so she was
- 5:06indeed cure on the spot and Jesus did
- 5:10not let the moment pass Jesus asked who
- 5:13has touched him because he wanted to
- 5:15speak to her he told her to have courage
- 5:19and that it was her faith that saved
- 5:23her what these two figures in the
- 5:25gospels teach us about entrusting our
- 5:28daily anxiety to the Lord Jesus but we
- 5:32know what it is to wake up in the middle
- 5:34of night with worry about the health of
- 5:37a loved one perhaps a husband or wife or
- 5:40a child or a
- 5:41parent we know what it's like to Grapple
- 5:44with insoluble problems we might try
- 5:48other things to distract us we might eat
- 5:53things that we shouldn't we should we we
- 5:56might Eng engage in self-medicating
- 6:00eting or a whole range of other
- 6:02unhealthy
- 6:04ways what we really need to do is to
- 6:07approach Jesus with faith a faith that
- 6:10is humble a faith that is strong sounds
- 6:14simple doesn't
- 6:17it but Jesus but our experience teaches
- 6:20us there are roadblocks to our
- 6:23approaching Jesus one of our biggest
- 6:26roadblocks is
- 6:28fear not holy fear not a sense of wonder
- 6:31and awe before God's power but rather an
- 6:34Unholy fear that paralyzes us that stops
- 6:38us in our
- 6:40tracks such fear crowds out faith and
- 6:43convinces us that not even the Lord can
- 6:46help
- 6:48us at other times we may think that the
- 6:50Lord Jesus will not listen to us in our
- 6:52needs because we have neglected our
- 6:54spiritual life or that we are caught up
- 6:56in some
- 6:57sin or perhaps we might believe the
- 7:01enemy believe the lies of the enemy and
- 7:04we may feel Unworthy of his love if only
- 7:07we knew how much the Lord wants to hear
- 7:09from us if only we realize how much the
- 7:12Lord wants to heal
- 7:14us for God does not spurn a humble and
- 7:18contrite
- 7:20heart so what jarus in the woman in
- 7:24today's Gospel teach us is
- 7:27this the way to experience is Jesus's
- 7:30saving power is to reject
- 7:33fear I've been highlighting that in the
- 7:36last couple Sundays in my
- 7:39homilies it's been the theme for the
- 7:41last several weeks the opposite of faith
- 7:45is not
- 7:46questioning the opposite of faith is
- 7:51fear the gospel this Sunday is teaching
- 7:53us to approach Jesus with a faith that
- 7:55is both humble and strong to embrace our
- 7:59faith a deeply personal faith that comes
- 8:02from a living contact an encounter with
- 8:04a living person and that is Jesus
- 8:07Christ and all of us can have Living
- 8:10contact with Jesus when we spend time
- 8:12each day in prayer for conversation with
- 8:15the Lord when we read the scriptures and
- 8:18we let the voice of Jesus resonate in
- 8:21our hearts when we approach the Lord in
- 8:23the sacrament of reconciliation and ask
- 8:26to be healed of our sins when we receive
- 8:29the Lord in the Eucharist with gratitude
- 8:32and
- 8:33worthiness and with deep joy for having
- 8:37received the
- 8:38Lord then we realize our troubles and
- 8:41worries can actually be like a key that
- 8:44opens the heart of the Lord the Lord who
- 8:47loves us so
- 8:51deeply the Lord whose love is stronger
- 8:53than sin and more powerful than
- 8:56death when that realization draws upon
- 8:59on us our problems may not vanish
- 9:02instantly but we do find the wisdom and
- 9:04strength to address them and in the
- 9:06process Jesus gives us that peace which
- 9:09is beyond all
- 9:12telling so my brothers and sisters again
- 9:15this Sunday the Lord is teaching us a
- 9:17very important
- 9:19lesson approaching Jesus with a strong
- 9:22and humble Faith like that of jaras and
- 9:25the woman we find the freedom to pray
- 9:29as did the great spiritual Master St
- 9:32theres of Avala who said let nothing
- 9:35disturb you let nothing frighten you all
- 9:39things are passing away God never
- 9:43changes patient obtains all things
- 9:47Whoever has God lacks nothing God Alone
- 9:53suffices amen amen
