  25. 1:07but you need to register, okay? Right
  26. 1:10there on the site on your screen. Let
  27. 1:11us go to today's Gospel, for Wednesday
  28. 1:13of the 28th week of Ordinary Time. The
  29. 1:16Gospel is from Luke, chapter 11, verses
  30. 1:1942 to 46, and it says: "At that time,
  31. 1:22the Lord said: Woe to you, Pharisees,
  32. 1:25because you pay tithes of mint, rue,
  33. 1:27and all other herbs, but you neglect
  34. 1:30justice and love. You should have
  35. 1:34practiced these without neglecting the
  36. 1:36others. Woe to you, Pharisees, because
  37. 1:39you love the seat of honor in the
  38. 1:40synagogues and being greeted in public
  39. 1:42squares? Woe to you, because you are
  40. 1:45like tombs that are not seen, over
  41. 1:47which men walk without knowing." A
  42. 1:50scholar of the law spoke up and said: "
  43. 1:52Teacher," saying: "You insult us too."
  44. 1:56Jesus replied: "Woe to you also,
  45. 1:57scholars of the law, because you lay
  46. 1:59unbearable burdens on men, and you
  47. 2:01yourselves do not touch these burdens,
  48. 2:03not even with one finger." The word of
  49. 2:06salvation. Glory to you, O Lord. Woe to
  50. 2:10you, Pharisee, scholar of the law, you
  51. 2:13are hypocrites. Hypocrites and confused
  52. 2:16, said Jesus. You pay tithes, including
  53. 2:19on mint, rue, and other herbs, which
  54. 2:21wasn't even part of the Mosaic law. So
  55. 2:25they would tithe their income and these
  56. 2:28things that weren't even part of their
  57. 2:30annual crop harvest, they would tithe
  58. 2:32those too. So when it came to tithing,
  59. 2:35they were experts, weren't they? They
  60. 2:39were attentive, meticulous, and
  61. 2:41thorough, right? They even did more
  62. 2:44than what was asked. But with that,
  63. 2:48they became confused men, believing
  64. 2:50that God was very pleased or that God
  65. 2:53gets very angry when there is some
  66. 2:55failure in that matter. And this is
  67. 2:58very important for us, dear ones.
  68. 3:00Sometimes we value and consider
  69. 3:01fundamental that which for God is
  70. 3:03relative. And we consider relative and
  71. 3:06indifferent that which for God is
  72. 3:07fundamental. And then Jesus said: "You
  73. 3:10should practice, but you leave aside
  74. 3:12justice and the love of God. You should
  75. 3:16practice this without leaving aside
  76. 3:18that. And in faith, it’s not about
  77. 3:22this or that, it’s about both things,
  78. 3:25but the most important thing is justice
  79. 3:27and the love of God, to be just. And in
  80. 3:31the Bible, justice includes charity,
  81. 3:34fraternity, right? Justice and the love
  82. 3:37of God. This you leave aside. It didn't
  83. 3:39work out today. You know how it is?
  84. 3:41It's complicated, but when the subject
  85. 3:43is tithing, there was a very great
  86. 3:45rigor. Even because, in their
  87. 3:48understanding, the tithe was a way to
  88. 3:51make God owe me money, right? So that
  89. 3:54was why they were so thorough with that
  90. 3:57, right? And we see in the world today,
  91. 4:00even within our religion nowadays, in
  92. 4:02today's Christianity, the
  93. 4:04over-valuation, the hyper-valuation of
  94. 4:06the money issue, the unhinged promises,
  95. 4:08you know, that there are people I don't
  96. 4:11know how they manage to promise certain
  97. 4:13things to the people, right? These days
  98. 4:17a video went viral of some very famous
  99. 4:19people:" brothers who want to come and
  100. 4:21sacrifice their own home, you will live
  101. 4:23a miracle, you will. "You who come, you
  102. 4:26who are offering your home, God will
  103. 4:28honor you. Because I already received
  104. 4:31this week a testimony from a sister who
  105. 4:33came and donated her apartment to the
  106. 4:35church and later said:" Pastor, that
  107. 4:37thing I couldn't solve, in two days God
  108. 4:39solved it. "You can see on the guy's
  109. 4:42face that he's lying. It's a lie. There
  110. 4:45is no such sister. This sister didn't
  111. 4:47give an apartment and in two days had
  112. 4:49an impossible issue in her life solved.
  113. 4:51It's a lie. This person doesn't exist,
  114. 4:54the person lies like that, oh, this
  115. 4:56issue of money with religion, right?
  116. 5:00Then Jesus continues saying the other
  117. 5:01things, woe to you, Pharisees, because
  118. 5:03you like the honor that religion brings
  119. 5:05, right? In the squares, the seats. Woe
  120. 5:08to you, because on the outside you look
  121. 5:10beautiful, but on the inside you are
  122. 5:12moldy bread, like a tomb, right?
  123. 5:14Whitewashed sepulchers, right? that
  124. 5:15they would drive over it, making it
  125. 5:17look so nice that people wouldn't even
  126. 5:18realize they were walking over a grave.
  127. 5:20But inside it's a grave, meaning inside
  128. 5:22they are full of stories, full of
  129. 5:24crimes, full of things. But it's
  130. 5:27impressive, anyway, regarding scams,
  131. 5:29people fall for them if they want to,
  132. 5:30right? We like things all wrapped up
  133. 5:32nicely, don't we? It's easy, it's easy
  134. 5:34to make people forget, it's easy to
  135. 5:36hide, but God knows everything. Look
  136. 5:39inside, I know who you are, right? And
  137. 5:43then Jesus continues, because then a
  138. 5:45teacher of the law said," Lord, but by
  139. 5:47saying this, are you insulting us too?
  140. 5:49"And Jesus answered him point-blank. Oh
  141. 5:51, I'll even highlight this with my
  142. 5:53Palmeiras green, still runner-up. Woe
  143. 5:56to you also, teachers of the law,
  144. 5:57because you place unbearable burdens on
  145. 5:59men, but you yourselves do not touch
  146. 6:01these burdens, you don't move these
  147. 6:03burdens with even a finger. So look,
  148. 6:06see the sins of the Pharisees and the
  149. 6:08teachers of the law, right? The
  150. 6:10teachers of the law had this role, to
  151. 6:12take the law of Moses and interpret how
  152. 6:14it should be practiced today. And Jesus
  153. 6:16said that they interpreted it in this
  154. 6:18way here, look. The interpretation you
  155. 6:21give to the people, to the simpler
  156. 6:23folks. What they have to practice in
  157. 6:26faith are unbearable burdens, way too
  158. 6:30heavy. You yourselves do not touch
  159. 6:33these burdens. I know you don't do that
  160. 6:35. So, sometimes they instilled in the
  161. 6:38people the issue of tithing, fasting,
  162. 6:40you know, so many precepts, they were
  163. 6:42so rigorous with everything. And Jesus
  164. 6:45said," But I know that in your personal
  165. 6:47life, you are quite loose, broad, and
  166. 6:49everything is fine, everything is okay,
  167. 6:50right? "So, my dear ones, today's
  168. 6:53gospel is here with the 'woes' from
  169. 6:55Jesus. If we aren't careful, religion,
  170. 6:59which could be a medicine for our
  171. 7:01wounds, becomes makeup for our masks.
  172. 7:05And we are very happy to feel distant,
  173. 7:08different, and superior to people who
  174. 7:10don't like these religious practices.
  175. 7:15And so this means of healing, of
  176. 7:17communion with God, of fraternity with
  177. 7:20others, and of sanctification of our
  178. 7:22character, this which is a means
  179. 7:24becomes an end in itself. I simply know
  180. 7:28that all this religious practice hasn't
  181. 7:30changed me, but that's fine, because
  182. 7:32then something else comes along, we
  183. 7:34sometimes have a very infantile
  184. 7:35religious view of God himself. Do you
  185. 7:38imagine God, the almighty? Do you
  186. 7:41imagine God who sent us Jesus? Now
  187. 7:45imagine Jesus, read all the parts of
  188. 7:48the Gospel calmly and tell me if he's
  189. 7:51holding a scale weighing grams of rue
  190. 7:54and mint. That is God. We can do better
  191. 7:59, and we do this. We reduce God to this
  192. 8:01. There's a fellow with a little scale
  193. 8:04in his hand, or even a calendar marking
  194. 8:07X's. How many Fridays of the year did I
  195. 8:09forget it was Friday and eat red meat.
  196. 8:13Not even your mother-in-law, as mean as
  197. 8:14she may be, is this annoying. Sorry for
  198. 8:16saying this, let alone God, but we can
  199. 8:18diminish God and all the power of grace
  200. 8:21and the Gospel into these little things
  201. 8:23. Why? Because it gives us a feeling of
  202. 8:26superiority, of power. So Jesus is here
  203. 8:29speaking to those who, with these
  204. 8:31little things, didn't care about God at
  205. 8:33all, but were very interested in
  206. 8:35feeling different from other people.
  207. 8:38May God deliver us from such a great
  208. 8:40error. And just before the final
  209. 8:42blessing, you'll see images there,
  210. 8:44right, of our 19th, this coming Monday.
