- 0:01The hook, the ending, the structure, and
- 0:03all rules are preserved.
- 0:05A shovel bit into the dirt and threw a
- 0:08load down into the hole.
- 0:11Then another.
- 0:13And another.
- 0:15Down at the bottom, a man lay on his
- 0:17back, half buried, one arm twitching.
- 0:21He tried to lift his head.
- 0:24A boot came down and shoved it back into
- 0:26the gravel.
- 0:28"Stay down," a voice said.
- 0:31"You're already dead."
- 0:33The dirt kept falling, covering his
- 0:35chest, his neck, sliding into his open
- 0:38mouth.
- 0:4020 ft away, hidden behind a rusted fuel
- 0:43pump, a kid crouched in the dark and
- 0:46watched every second of it.
- 0:48His dog pressed hard against his leg,
- 0:51shaking.
- 0:52The kid was named Eli Marsh, and he had
- 0:55nothing.
- 0:57No home.
- 0:59No money.
- 1:01No reason on earth to move.
- 1:04But the man in the hole was still
- 1:05breathing.
- 1:07What Eli did next would put an entire
- 1:10Hells Angels chapter in his debt.
- 1:13Stay with me on this one.
- 1:16Eli didn't move for a long time.
- 1:19He couldn't.
- 1:21His legs had locked up under him, and
- 1:24his heart was slamming so hard, he was
- 1:27sure the two men could hear it across
- 1:29the gravel pit.
- 1:31But they couldn't hear anything over
- 1:33their own work.
- 1:35They were breathing heavy, cursing low,
- 1:38throwing dirt like they wanted the whole
- 1:40thing behind them.
- 1:42Here's the thing you need to understand
- 1:44about Eli Marsh.
- 1:46He was 19 years old, and he had learned
- 1:49one rule better than any other.
- 1:52When trouble happens, you don't get
- 1:54involved.
- 1:56You keep your head down, You keep your
- 1:58dog close, and you disappear.
- 2:01That rule had kept him alive for 2 years
- 2:04on the road.
- 2:062 years of sleeping behind gas stations
- 2:09and church dumpsters and under highway
- 2:11bridges.
- 2:132 years of watching other people's
- 2:15fights from the shadows and walking away
- 2:18clean.
- 2:20He'd seen men beaten outside bars.
- 2:23He'd seen a woman screaming at a man in
- 2:25a parking lot at 2:00 in the morning.
- 2:29Every single time, he'd turned around
- 2:31and gone the other way.
- 2:34Because invisible was safe.
- 2:37Invisible was the only thing that had
- 2:40ever kept him breathing.
- 2:42He'd found the gas station 3 weeks back.
- 2:46It sat at the dead end of a county road
- 2:48outside of nothing town called Cedar
- 2:50Hollow, Montana.
- 2:53The pumps were dry.
- 2:56The windows were boarded.
- 2:58Somebody had shut the place down years
- 3:00ago and forgotten it existed.
- 3:04That suited Eli fine.
- 3:07A forgotten place is the best kind of
- 3:09place when you're a forgotten person.
- 3:13He'd cleaned out the back office, laid
- 3:16down a couple of moving blankets, and
- 3:18made himself a corner.
- 3:21His dog Diesel, a brown and black mutt
- 3:24with one torn ear, slept against his
- 3:26chest every night and kept the cold off
- 3:29both of them.
- 3:31Behind the station, past a broken fence,
- 3:34was the gravel pit.
- 3:36Old mining ground.
- 3:39Nobody came out there.
- 3:41That was why the two men had picked it.
- 3:44Eli had been sitting on the back step
- 3:47with Diesel when he first saw the
- 3:49headlights bouncing up the access road.
- 3:52Two trucks.
- 3:54He'd killed his little camp light and
- 3:57pulled the dog down flat beside him.
- 4:00Then he watched them drag a third man
- 4:03out of the second truck.
- 4:05A big man.
- 4:07Even beaten and stumbling, you could see
- 4:10he was big.
- 4:12Leather vest.
- 4:14Boots.
- 4:15Long hair matted with blood.
- 4:18They'd worked him over hard before they
- 4:21ever got him to the pit.
- 4:23The man had fought.
- 4:26Eli would remember that as long as he
- 4:28lived.
- 4:30Even half dead, the man had swung and
- 4:32spit and called them names Eli couldn't
- 4:35repeat.
- 4:37One of the two got knocked flat on his
- 4:39back in the gravel. And for a second Eli
- 4:42thought the big man might actually get
- 4:44loose.
- 4:46Then the other one hit him across the
- 4:47back of the skull with something metal.
- 4:50And there was a sound Eli felt in his
- 4:52own teeth and the fight went out of him
- 4:55and they put him in the hole.
- 4:58Now the hole was almost full.
- 5:01"That's enough." One of them said,
- 5:03wiping his face.
- 5:05"Ground'll settle by spring."
- 5:08"Ain't nobody looking out here anyway."
- 5:12"You sure he's done?"
- 5:14"He's under 3 ft of dirt."
- 5:17"Yeah."
- 5:19"He's done."
- 5:21They stood there a minute catching their
- 5:23breath.
- 5:25Then they threw the shovels in the truck
- 5:26bed, climbed in and drove off.
- 5:30The tail lights bounced down the access
- 5:32road and turned onto the county highway
- 5:35and were gone.
- 5:37And then it was just Eli and his dog and
- 5:40a patch of freshly turned dirt with a
- 5:42man underneath it.
- 5:44He should have gone inside.
- 5:47Every instinct he had was screaming at
- 5:49him to go inside, lie down, pull Diesel
- 5:53close, and pretend he'd seen nothing.
- 5:57Because that's what you do.
- 5:59You don't get involved.
- 6:02Getting involved gets you killed.
- 6:05Whoever those men were, they had just
- 6:07buried somebody alive without blinking.
- 6:11What would they do to a homeless kid
- 6:13who'd watch them do it?
- 6:15But he kept picturing the arm.
- 6:18The way it had twitched.
- 6:20The way the man had tried to lift his
- 6:22head right up until the last second.
- 6:26Eli looked down at Diesel.
- 6:29The dog looked back at him, ears flat,
- 6:32waiting.
- 6:33He's still under there.
- 6:36Eli whispered.
- 6:38He was breathing.
- 6:41Diesel whined once low.
- 6:43Eli thought about his mother, who was
- 6:46dead now, and the one thing she used to
- 6:48say when he was small and scared.
- 6:51She'd say, "You don't have to be brave,
- 6:54baby.
- 6:55You just have to do the next right
- 6:57thing.
- 6:59Just the next one.
- 7:01Don't look past it."
- 7:03The next right thing was on the other
- 7:05side of that fence, buried under 3 ft of
- 7:09Montana gravel, and it had maybe 2
- 7:11minutes of air left.
- 7:14Eli got up.
- 7:16He crossed to the pit at a dead run,
- 7:18Diesel right at his heels.
- 7:21He dropped to his knees at the fresh
- 7:23dirt and started digging with his bare
- 7:26hands, throwing gravel back between his
- 7:29legs like a dog.
- 7:31The dirt was loose, thank God, still
- 7:33soft from being turned.
- 7:36But there was so much of it, and he
- 7:38didn't know exactly where the man's head
- 7:40was.
- 7:42He dug one spot down 2 ft and found
- 7:45nothing but rock and had to start again
- 7:47a foot to the left. And the whole time a
- 7:50voice in his head was counting down the
- 7:52seconds the man had left.
- 7:55"Come on." He said.
- 7:57"Come on. Come on."
- 8:00His fingers hit something.
- 8:03Not dirt.
- 8:04Cloth.
- 8:06He scraped along it and found a
- 8:08shoulder, then a collar, then a jaw
- 8:11slick with blood and mud.
- 8:13He cleared the dirt off the face fast,
- 8:16digging two channels down along the
- 8:18sides of the head, and pressed his
- 8:20fingers to the neck.
- 8:23There was a pulse.
- 8:25Faint, but there.
- 8:27"Hey."
- 8:29Eli said, digging at the chest now,
- 8:31freeing the arms.
- 8:33"Hey, can you hear me?
- 8:36I got you.
- 8:38I'm getting you out."
- 8:40The man didn't answer.
- 8:43His face was gray under the mud.
- 8:46But when Eli cleared the mouth and
- 8:48turned the head to the side, a thin
- 8:50trickle of dirt and spit ran out, and
- 8:53the chest gave a small, ragged heave.
- 8:57He was alive.
- 8:59Barely,
- 9:01but alive.
- 9:03And now Eli Marsh had done the one thing
- 9:05he'd sworn he would never do.
- 9:09He'd gotten involved.
- 9:11There was no taking it back.
- 9:14Whatever came next, he was in it now,
- 9:17all the way, with a dying stranger and
- 9:19no idea who wanted him dead.
- 9:23Getting the man out of the hole nearly
- 9:25finished them both.
- 9:27He was dead weight, 240 lb of it, and
- 9:31Eli was maybe a buck 60 soaking wet.
- 9:35He dug the whole torso free,
- 9:38then got both hands under the arms and
- 9:40hauled, digging his heels into the
- 9:42gravel, throwing his whole body
- 9:45backward.
- 9:46The man came up out of the dirt inch by
- 9:49inch.
- 9:50Eli fell, got up, hauled again.
- 9:53His hands were bleeding now, the nails
- 9:56torn, and he didn't even feel it.
- 9:59Diesel darted around them, barking
- 10:01panicked.
- 10:03Eli didn't have the breath to hush him.
- 10:07He just kept pulling.
- 10:09By the time he got the man over the lip
- 10:11of the hole and flat on the ground,
- 10:14Eli's arms were shaking so hard he
- 10:17couldn't feel his hands.
- 10:19He rolled the man onto his side and
- 10:22pounded his back, the way he'd once seen
- 10:24a trucker do to a choking man at a rest
- 10:27stop.
- 10:29More dirt came up.
- 10:31Then the man coughed,
- 10:34a real cough, deep and wet, and then he
- 10:36was gasping, dragging air down in huge
- 10:39broken gulps, his whole body convulsing
- 10:42with it.
- 10:44That's it.
- 10:46Eli said, almost crying.
- 10:49That's it. Breathe, breathe. You're
- 10:50okay.
- 10:52The man's eyes opened,
- 10:55just slits.
- 10:57They rolled around, unfocused, wild.
- 11:01One hand came up and grabbed a fistful
- 11:03of Eli's jacket, and even mostly dead,
- 11:06the grip was like iron.
- 11:09Is he?
- 11:11Eli said.
- 11:13Is he?
- 11:15I'm not one of them.
- 11:17I pulled you out.
- 11:19You hear me?
- 11:21I pulled you out.
- 11:23The eyes tried to find him and couldn't
- 11:26hold.
- 11:27The hand loosened.
- 11:30The man sagged back into the dirt, out
- 11:32cold again, but breathing.
- 11:35Really breathing now.
- 11:38Eli couldn't leave him in the open.
- 11:41If those men came back, if anybody drove
- 11:44up that road, it was over for both of
- 11:47them.
- 11:48And the night was cold enough to kill a
- 11:50healthy man, never mind a beaten one
- 11:53who'd just been dug out of a grave.
- 11:56So, Eli did the second impossible thing.
- 12:00He got the man up onto his own back,
- 12:03more or less in a kind of stumbling
- 12:05drag, and he moved him.
- 12:0810 ft at a time.
- 12:10Rest.
- 12:1210 more.
- 12:14Through the gap in the fence.
- 12:17Across the weeds.
- 12:19Up the two steps into the back office of
- 12:22the dead gas station.
- 12:24It took him the better part of an hour,
- 12:27and by the end he was crawling and the
- 12:29man was groaning, half awake, trying
- 12:32weakly to help with his legs.
- 12:35Eli laid him down on the moving
- 12:37blankets.
- 12:39He got his own sleeping bag and put it
- 12:41over him.
- 12:43He found the jug of water he kept filled
- 12:46from the church spigot in town, wet a
- 12:48rag, and cleaned the mud off the man's
- 12:51face and out of his mouth.
- 12:54There was a deep gash along the scalp,
- 12:57and another over the eye.
- 12:59The nose was broken.
- 13:02Two fingers on the left hand were bent
- 13:04the wrong way.
- 13:06Ribs, probably, from the way the man
- 13:09flinched when Eli touched his side.
- 13:12Eli did what little he could.
- 13:15He straightened the fingers as best he
- 13:17dared, and wrapped them with a strip
- 13:19torn off a clean shirt.
- 13:22He'd patched himself up plenty of times
- 13:24on on road, and his hands knew the work
- 13:27even when his mind was screaming.
- 13:30But the man was warm now, out of the
- 13:32wind, and he was breathing steady.
- 13:36In the gray of early morning, the man
- 13:38woke up.
- 13:40Eli was sitting against the far wall
- 13:42with Diesel across his lap, half asleep
- 13:45himself, when he heard the change in the
- 13:48breathing.
- 13:49He looked over.
- 13:52The man's eyes were open, and this time
- 13:54they were clear, and they were fixed
- 13:56dead on him.
- 13:58"Where am I?" the man said.
- 14:01His voice was a ruin, all gravel.
- 14:05"Old gas station."
- 14:07Eli said.
- 14:09"Off the county road.
- 14:12Cedar Hollow."
- 14:14The man's eyes moved around the little
- 14:16room, taking in the boarded window, the
- 14:19blankets, the dog, the kid in the torn
- 14:22jacket.
- 14:24Then he looked down at himself, at the
- 14:26mud caked into every seam of him, and
- 14:29something moved behind his face.
- 14:32He remembered.
- 14:34"They put me in the ground." he said.
- 14:37"Yeah."
- 14:39Eli said quietly.
- 14:42"They did."
- 14:44"How am I not in the ground?"
- 14:46"I dug you out."
- 14:49The man stared at him for a long moment.
- 14:52"You dug me out?"
- 14:54"You were still breathing.
- 14:57I couldn't just leave you."
- 14:59The man tried to sit up and made it
- 15:02about halfway before the ribs stopped
- 15:04him.
- 15:06He hissed through his teeth and eased
- 15:07back down.
- 15:09When he'd caught his breath, he looked
- 15:11at Eli again, and this time the look was
- 15:14different.
- 15:16Measuring.
- 15:18Like he was seeing him properly for for
- 15:20first time.
- 15:22"What's your name, kid?"
- 15:24"Eli."
- 15:26"You got people, Eli?"
- 15:29"Somebody I can call?"
- 15:31Eli almost laughed.
- 15:34"No.
- 15:35It's just me
- 15:38and him."
- 15:40He nodded at Diesel.
- 15:42The man's eyes closed.
- 15:45For a minute, Eli thought he'd passed
- 15:47out again.
- 15:49Then he spoke without opening them.
- 15:52"My name's Cutter.
- 15:54You saved my life, kid.
- 15:57You understand that?
- 15:59Those men, what they did,
- 16:02nobody was ever supposed to know.
- 16:05I was supposed to just be gone."
- 16:08He opened his eyes.
- 16:11"But you were there.
- 16:13And you didn't run."
- 16:16"I almost did."
- 16:18Eli admitted.
- 16:20"But you didn't."
- 16:22Cutter let his head fall back on the
- 16:24blanket.
- 16:26"Get some sleep, kid.
- 16:28You look worse than I do."
- 16:31And for the first time in 2 years, Eli
- 16:34Marsh slept in that little room with
- 16:36somebody watching over him instead of
- 16:39the other way around.
- 16:41Diesel curled up between the two of
- 16:43them.
- 16:45Outside, the sun came up over the pit
- 16:47where a grave lay open and empty.
- 16:51And for a few hours, in that boarded-up
- 16:54room at the end of a dead county road,
- 16:56it almost felt like the worst was over.
- 17:00It wasn't.
- 17:023 days later, a phone rang.
- 17:06Cutter had been getting stronger.
- 17:09Not fast, but steady.
- 17:11Eli had shared everything he had, which
- 17:14wasn't much.
- 17:16Canned beans warmed over a little camp
- 17:18stove,
- 17:20bread from the day-old rack,
- 17:23water from the church,
- 17:25Cutter ate all of it without complaint
- 17:28and healed like men only heal when
- 17:30they've done a lot of healing in their
- 17:32life.
- 17:34He never asked for more than Eli had,
- 17:36and he noticed things.
- 17:39He noticed the kid gave him the bigger
- 17:41share and told himself Eli didn't see.
- 17:45On the third morning, he'd gotten to his
- 17:47feet and stayed there, one hand on the
- 17:50wall,
- 17:51and he'd found a burner phone zipped
- 17:53into a hidden pocket of his vest that
- 17:55the two men had missed.
- 17:58He'd made one call,
- 18:00spoken low,
- 18:02given directions,
- 18:05then he'd sat back down, and his face
- 18:07was different.
- 18:09Harder.
- 18:11"Kid," he said,
- 18:13"I need to tell you something, and I
- 18:15need you to hear all of it before you
- 18:17say anything."
- 18:19Eli set down the can he was opening.
- 18:23"Those two men who put me in the ground,
- 18:26their names are Wirk and Delts.
- 18:29They're patched members of my club."
- 18:32Cutter watched Eli's face.
- 18:35"You know what the Hell's Angels are?"
- 18:38"I know the name,"
- 18:41Eli said carefully.
- 18:43"I'm the road captain of the Cedar
- 18:45Hollow charter.
- 18:47Have been 11 years.
- 18:50Wirk and Delts are my brothers.
- 18:53Sworn brothers."
- 18:55Cutter's jaw worked.
- 18:58"Or they were.
- 19:00About a month back, I found out they'd
- 19:02been running dope through club runs
- 19:04without the club's say.
- 19:06A skimming.
- 19:08Using our patch as cover for their own
- 19:10pockets.
- 19:12That's not just against the rules, kid.
- 19:16That gets people killed.
- 19:18That brings the law down on every man
- 19:21wearing the colors.
- 19:23He looked at the wall.
- 19:26I told them I was taking it to the
- 19:28table.
- 19:29To the president.
- 19:32That's how it works.
- 19:34You bring it to the table, the club
- 19:36decides.
- 19:38Every man gets his say, and the vote is
- 19:41the vote, and nobody stands above it.
- 19:44That's the whole point of the colors.
- 19:47It means you answer to your brothers.
- 19:51So they try to make you disappear first.
- 19:54Eli said,
- 19:56"So it'd look like I ran.
- 19:59Or got picked up.
- 20:02Anything but the truth.
- 20:04Dead men don't testify at the table."
- 20:08Cutter's eyes came back to Eli, and they
- 20:10were flat and cold.
- 20:13But here's what changes everything now,
- 20:15kid.
- 20:17Rerk and Delts think I'm dead.
- 20:20When I walk back in, they're going to
- 20:22know somebody dug me out.
- 20:24And they're going to want to know who.
- 20:27The room went very quiet.
- 20:30Even Diesel lifted his head.
- 20:33"They'll come looking."
- 20:36Eli said,
- 20:38It wasn't a question.
- 20:40"They'll come looking.
- 20:42And it's not two men anymore.
- 20:45If they can't cover the dope, they'll
- 20:47lie.
- 20:49They'll get to the table before I do,
- 20:51and they'll tell the club I turned rat.
- 20:54That I brought an outsider into charter
- 20:56business.
- 20:58They'll try to flip the whole table
- 21:00against me before I can get my word in."
- 21:04Cutter leaned forward, and pain crossed
- 21:06his face, and he pushed through it.
- 21:10You have to understand how it works.
- 21:13A man's word at that table is
- 21:15everything.
- 21:17If they land the lie first, then I'm the
- 21:19traitor, and they're the ones who caught
- 21:21me.
- 21:23That means for a little while, until the
- 21:25truth lands, there's men, good men, who
- 21:28might come at both of us believing
- 21:30they're doing right.
- 21:32Not two.
- 21:34A whole charter's worth.
- 21:37And a kid who saw everything is the
- 21:39loose end that makes their story fall
- 21:42apart.
- 21:44Eli sat back against the wall.
- 21:47Diesel pressed into his side.
- 21:50He'd spent 2 years being invisible, and
- 21:52now he was the one thing a whole outfit
- 21:55of dangerous men might need to erase.
- 21:59"Why are you telling me this?" he asked.
- 22:02"You could have just left.
- 22:05I'd never have known."
- 22:08Cutter looked at him for a long time.
- 22:11"Because you didn't run," he said.
- 22:14"And I don't leave a man behind who
- 22:16didn't leave me."
- 22:18If you're still with me, take 1 second
- 22:21and hit that subscribe button.
- 22:24It's a small thing, but it tells me you
- 22:26want to see how this ends.
- 22:29Now, let's get back to it, because the
- 22:31trucks are already on the road.
- 22:34They came at dusk.
- 22:37Cutter heard the engines before Eli did.
- 22:40He came off the blanket in one motion,
- 22:43ribs and all, and moved to the boarded
- 22:46window, putting one eye to the gap.
- 22:49"Two trucks," he said.
- 22:52"It's them."
- 22:54Eli's stomach dropped.
- 22:56"You called the club.
- 22:59You said help was coming."
- 23:01"Yeah, it is.
- 23:03But they're an hour out, and Rourke
- 23:05doesn't wait.
- 23:07Cutter turned.
- 23:09His face had gone somewhere else,
- 23:12somewhere hard and calm at the same
- 23:14time.
- 23:15Listen to me.
- 23:18Take the dog.
- 23:20Go out the front through the boards low
- 23:22and quiet.
- 23:24Get into the tree line north of the road
- 23:26and don't stop.
- 23:28Don't come back for anything.
- 23:31I'm not leaving you.
- 23:34Eli said,
- 23:36Kid,
- 23:38you said you don't leave a man behind
- 23:40who didn't leave you.
- 23:42Eli's voice was shaking, but he didn't
- 23:45back down.
- 23:47Well, neither do I.
- 23:49That's the whole reason you're alive.
- 23:52For 1 second, something cracked in
- 23:54Cutter's face.
- 23:57Then the trucks were rolling into the
- 23:58lot, gravel popping under the tires, and
- 24:02there was no more time.
- 24:04Rourke's voice came first, loud, ugly,
- 24:07carrying across the lot.
- 24:10Whoever's in there, come on out.
- 24:13We know somebody's been squatting this
- 24:15dump.
- 24:16We just want to talk.
- 24:19Cutter pressed himself flat against the
- 24:21wall by the door and motioned Eli down
- 24:24behind the old counter.
- 24:26He mouthed one word.
- 24:29Wait.
- 24:31Boots on gravel.
- 24:33Two sets, then a third.
- 24:36Delts's voice lower.
- 24:38Truck says somebody's living here.
- 24:42Camp stove still warm.
- 24:44Then he's close.
- 24:47Rourke said,
- 24:49Spread out.
- 24:51The door was a cheap hollow thing, and
- 24:53it burst inward off one hinge when
- 24:55Rourke kicked it.
- 24:57He came in fast, a pistol up in a
- 25:00two-handed grip, sweeping the room.
- 25:03His eyes found the blankets, the
- 25:05sleeping bag, the water jug.
- 25:09His mouth was already opening to shout
- 25:11for the others.
- 25:13He never got the word out.
- 25:16Cutter came off the wall like a
- 25:17landslide.
- 25:20One hand clamped over the gun, driving
- 25:22it toward the floor, and the other drove
- 25:25into Rourke's throat.
- 25:27The gun went off once into the concrete,
- 25:30deafening in the little room, and then
- 25:32it was clattering across the floor, and
- 25:35Rourke was on his back with the road
- 25:37captain on top of him, and 240 lb of a
- 25:41man who was supposed to be dead bearing
- 25:43down.
- 25:45"Remember me."
- 25:47Cutter said into his face.
- 25:50"You put me in the ground, brother.
- 25:53Should have dug deeper."
- 25:56Rourke's eyes were huge with terror.
- 25:59He was looking at a ghost.
- 26:02He tried to scream, and Cutter's forearm
- 26:04was across his windpipe, and the scream
- 26:07came out as nothing.
- 26:09Delts filled the doorway.
- 26:12He had a pistol, too, and he raised it,
- 26:15and for one frozen second, the barrel
- 26:17was swinging toward Cutter's back.
- 26:21Eli didn't think.
- 26:23He grabbed the water jug off the floor,
- 26:26came up over the counter, and threw it
- 26:28with everything he had.
- 26:31Four gallons of water in hard plastic
- 26:33caught Delts square in the side of the
- 26:35head.
- 26:37It wasn't a knockout,
- 26:40but it staggered him, and the shot went
- 26:42wide into the ceiling, and it bought the
- 26:44half second Cutter needed.
- 26:47Cutter came off Rourke and hit Delts
- 26:49low, driving him back through the broken
- 26:52doorframe and out onto the steps.
- 26:56They went down together into the gravel.
- 26:59Delts was younger, faster, and he still
- 27:02had the gun.
- 27:04But Cutter had 11 years of road behind
- 27:06him and a rage that had been buried
- 27:09alive 3 days ago and clawed its way back
- 27:12out.
- 27:13He got a knee on the gun arm.
- 27:17He got both hands on the wrist.
- 27:20There was a crack and Delts howled and
- 27:22the pistol dropped and then Cutter had
- 27:24it and it was over.
- 27:27Diesel was barking like the world was
- 27:29ending.
- 27:31Inside, Rourke had crawled toward the
- 27:33fallen gun.
- 27:35Eli got to it first, kicked it spinning
- 27:38across the floor into the dark corner,
- 27:40and stood between Rourke and the door
- 27:42with nothing but his own two shaking
- 27:45hands.
- 27:46Don't.
- 27:48Eli said.
- 27:50Just don't.
- 27:52Rourke looked up at the homeless kid
- 27:54standing over him and he started to
- 27:56laugh, a raw, ugly sound.
- 28:00You, he said.
- 28:02You're the one.
- 28:04You pulled him out.
- 28:06You stupid little Do you have any idea
- 28:09what you just did?
- 28:11You're dead.
- 28:13You and that mutt, you're both
- 28:16New headlights swept across the boarded
- 28:18window.
- 28:20Then more.
- 28:22And more.
- 28:24The whole lot lit up.
- 28:27And underneath the barking and the
- 28:28ringing in Eli's ears came a sound that
- 28:31rose and rose until it filled the whole
- 28:34world.
- 28:36Engines.
- 28:38Not trucks.
- 28:40Motorcycles.
- 28:42A dozen of them.
- 28:45Two dozen.
- 28:47Rolling up the dead county road in a
- 28:49thundering column, headlights blazing,
- 28:53and the ground itself seemed to shake
- 28:54with it.
- 28:56The Cedar Hollow Charter had arrived.
- 28:59Rerk's face went white.
- 29:02Cutter appeared in the broken doorway,
- 29:04Delts's pistol in his hand. Delts
- 29:07himself facedown and groaning in the
- 29:09gravel behind him.
- 29:12Cutter was covered in mud and dried
- 29:14blood, and he was standing straight up
- 29:16now, ribs be damned. And when the bikes
- 29:19rolled into the lot and the riders
- 29:21killed their engines, one after another,
- 29:25the silence that dropped was the loudest
- 29:27thing Eli had ever heard.
- 29:30A man stepped off the lead bike.
- 29:33Older,
- 29:35gray in his beard,
- 29:37a patch on his chest that even Eli
- 29:40understood meant president.
- 29:43He looked at Cutter standing in the
- 29:44doorway of a dead gas station, alive 3
- 29:48days after he'd vanished.
- 29:51"Brother," the old man said, and his
- 29:53voice broke on the word.
- 29:56"We buried a helmet and called it you.
- 29:59We had a service."
- 30:02"I know who put me in the ground,"
- 30:05Cutter said.
- 30:06He stepped down off the porch.
- 30:09He walked to where Rerk was being
- 30:11dragged out into the lot by two riders,
- 30:14and he pointed.
- 30:16"Him,
- 30:17and that one."
- 30:20He pointed at Delts.
- 30:22"Skimming dope on club runs.
- 30:25When I said I'd take it to the table,
- 30:27they beat me half to death and buried me
- 30:30alive out in that pit."
- 30:33He turned and pointed one last time, and
- 30:35this time his voice changed completely.
- 30:39"And that kid right there dug me out
- 30:41with his bare hands.
- 30:44A stranger.
- 30:46Homeless.
- 30:48Had nothing to gain and everything to
- 30:50lose.
- 30:52And he did it anyway.
- 30:54Then he stood between me and a bullet
- 30:57not 20 minutes ago.
- 31:00Every head in that lot turned to Eli
- 31:02Marsh, standing in the doorway with his
- 31:05dog pressed against his leg, shaking
- 31:07exactly like he'd been shaking three
- 31:09nights ago behind the fuel pump.
- 31:13The President walked over to him.
- 31:16Up close, he was even bigger, and his
- 31:18eyes were wet. And Eli didn't know
- 31:21whether to run or fall down.
- 31:24What's your name, son?
- 31:26Eli, he managed.
- 31:29Eli Marsh.
- 31:31The old man looked at him for a long
- 31:33moment.
- 31:35Then he did something Eli would never
- 31:37forget as long as he lived.
- 31:40He took off his own leather gloves, and
- 31:43he reached out, and he took Eli's raw,
- 31:46torn-up hands in both of his, and he
- 31:48held them.
- 31:50You gave me my brother back, he said.
- 31:54There is no debt in this world bigger
- 31:56than that one.
- 31:58You understand me, son?
- 32:00From this night on, you are never alone
- 32:03again.
- 32:05Rurken and Delts were not killed that
- 32:07night.
- 32:08Eli half expected it. Out there in the
- 32:11dark with two dozen furious men.
- 32:14But that isn't how it went.
- 32:17The club had rules, and Cutter had
- 32:20almost died to protect those rules, and
- 32:22the President was not going to spit on
- 32:24that by turning the lot into a second
- 32:27grave.
- 32:28Instead, they were stripped of their
- 32:30colors right there in the gravel.
- 32:33The President cut the patches off their
- 32:35vests with a knife while the whole
- 32:37charter watched in silence. And for men
- 32:40like that, Cutter told Eli later, that
- 32:43was worse than a beating.
- 32:46Then the dope and the burying and the
- 32:48whole of it was turned over to the one
- 32:51authority the club used when it wanted a
- 32:53thing done clean and public and
- 32:56permanent.
- 32:57The law.
- 32:59An anonymous call.
- 33:02A gravel pit.
- 33:04A shallow open hole with a road
- 33:06captain's blood still in the dirt. And
- 33:09two men whose truck tires matched the
- 33:11tracks and whose story fell apart the
- 33:14second the man they'd buried walked into
- 33:17the county sheriff's office alive.
- 33:20They went away for a long, long time.
- 33:24And the Cedar Hollow charter came out of
- 33:26it cleaner than it had been in years
- 33:28because a 19-year-old
- 33:31kid with nothing had refused to look the
- 33:33other way.
- 33:35But that's the justice part.
- 33:38It's the other part that changed Eli's
- 33:40life.
- 33:42He didn't go back to sleeping behind the
- 33:44gas station.
- 33:46He never spent another night on the road
- 33:48again.
- 33:50Cutter took him in.
- 33:52It was that simple and it was that big.
- 33:56Cutter had a place outside town, a real
- 33:59house with a real roof, a bike shop out
- 34:02back where he'd worked wrenches for 20
- 34:04years between runs.
- 34:07He gave Eli the spare room.
- 34:10He gave Diesel the run of the yard.
- 34:13And in the mornings he started teaching
- 34:15the kid the trade. How to break down an
- 34:18engine and build it back up. How to true
- 34:21a wheel. How to make a dead machine live
- 34:23again.
- 34:25Eli turned out to have good hands.
- 34:28Steady hands.
- 34:31The same hands that had dug a man out of
- 34:33the ground.
- 34:35The whole charter looked out for him
- 34:37after that.
- 34:39They weren't what he'd been afraid of
- 34:41back when the name was just a name that
- 34:43meant danger.
- 34:45They were men who'd been down, most of
- 34:48them at some point in their lives, and
- 34:50clawed their way back up. And they knew
- 34:53exactly what it meant to be young and
- 34:55alone and invisible with nothing but a
- 34:57dog for company.
- 35:00They made sure he had clothes that fit.
- 35:03Boots that didn't leak.
- 35:06They came around the shop and told him
- 35:08stories and gave him a hard time and
- 35:10slowly, without ever quite saying so,
- 35:13they made him one of them.
- 35:16Not a member.
- 35:18He was too young, and Cutter said the
- 35:20colors had to be earned, not given.
- 35:23But family,
- 35:26that he was from the first night.
- 35:29People in Cedar Hollow talked, of
- 35:30course.
- 35:32A homeless drifter taken in by the Hells
- 35:35Angels.
- 35:36They didn't understand it.
- 35:39They'd cross the street.
- 35:42And Eli would just keep walking, Diesel
- 35:44at his heel, because he'd learned the
- 35:47thing that mattered.
- 35:49It isn't the leather that tells you what
- 35:51a man is.
- 35:53It's what he does in the dark when
- 35:55nobody's watching, when there's nothing
- 35:57in it for him.
- 36:00Cutter never made a big speech about any
- 36:02of it.
- 36:03He wasn't that kind of man.
- 36:06But there was one evening, months later,
- 36:09out behind the shop, when the two of
- 36:12them were sitting on old lawn chairs
- 36:14watching the sun drop behind the
- 36:16mountains, Diesel asleep in the dirt
- 36:19between them.
- 36:21"You ever wonder why you didn't run?"
- 36:24Cutter said.
- 36:26That night,
- 36:28Eli thought about it a while.
- 36:31My mom used to say, "You don't have to
- 36:33be brave.
- 36:35You just do the next right thing.
- 36:38Don't look past it."
- 36:40Cutter nodded slow.
- 36:43He didn't say anything for a long time.
- 36:47Then he reached over and put one big
- 36:48hand on the back of the kid's neck, the
- 36:51way a father does, and he gave it a
- 36:53squeeze, and he let go.
- 36:56"She raised a good one," he said.
- 36:59"I'd have been in that ground by
- 37:01morning.
- 37:03Everybody I ever loved would have spent
- 37:05the rest of their lives thinking I ran
- 37:07out on them.
- 37:09You gave all that back to me, kid.
- 37:12And you didn't even know my name."
- 37:16Eli looked out at the mountains.
- 37:18Somewhere out past the tree line was a
- 37:21gravel pit with a hole in it that had
- 37:23almost been the end of everything for
- 37:26both of them.
- 37:28Now it was just a hole in the ground.
- 37:31That was all.
- 37:33Because a scared kid who had every
- 37:36reason in the world to keep his head
- 37:37down had gotten up instead and crossed a
- 37:41fence in the dark and done the next
- 37:43right thing.
- 37:45He reached down and scratched Diesel
- 37:47behind the torn ear.
- 37:50The dog thumped his tail in the dust
- 37:52without waking.
- 37:54"We got nowhere to be tonight,"
- 37:57Cutter said.
- 37:59"First time in a long time, huh, kid?"
- 38:02"Yeah,"
- 38:04Eli said.
- 38:06And for the first time in as long as he
- 38:08could remember, when he said it, it was
- 38:11true.
- 38:13He was home.
- 38:15And he was never going to be alone
- 38:17again.
