Holy Thursday Mass of the Lord's Supper (April 2, 2026) Homily: Fr. Vigoa — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:03I need you tonight to focus,
- 0:06to center yourselves,
- 0:09to listen carefully.
- 0:12Why? Because tonight is not a
- 0:14reenactment.
- 0:16Tonight is not a memory.
- 0:19I want you to understand that tonight
- 0:21you're in the upper room, not
- 0:23symbolically,
- 0:26not poetically, but really truly you are
- 0:29there.
- 0:31The air is thick.
- 0:34There's tension you can't quite name.
- 0:38Something is about to happen and they
- 0:40all feel it.
- 0:43The apostles don't fully understand, but
- 0:46they know that this night is different.
- 0:51And then he looks at them,
- 0:53not as a crowd, not as a group. He looks
- 0:56at each and every single one of them
- 0:59personally.
- 1:02And if you let this land,
- 1:05he's looking at you tonight, right into
- 1:07your eyes, in the same way.
- 1:12Because this night
- 1:14is the night when everything changes.
- 1:18This is the night when love takes a form
- 1:21that the world has never seen before.
- 1:25Not in words,
- 1:27not in ideas,
- 1:29but a body that's been given,
- 1:32blood that has been poured out,
- 1:35and God who goes and kneels.
- 1:40I don't want to rush past that.
- 1:43God kneels.
- 1:45God is kneeling.
- 1:48The one who spoke galaxies into
- 1:50existence now wraps a towel around his
- 1:53waist.
- 1:55The one whom angels worship
- 1:58now bends down before fishermen,
- 2:01before sinners, before betrayers,
- 2:05and he doesn't flinch.
- 2:08He doesn't hesitate. [clears throat]
- 2:11He doesn't say, "Well, once you clean
- 2:13yourselves up, then I will I will love
- 2:16you."
- 2:18No, he gets down into the mess
- 2:22and he begins to wash one by one,
- 2:26feet that have walked away from him,
- 2:29feet that would soon run in fear,
- 2:33feet that belong to a man who would
- 2:35betray him for 30 pieces of silver,
- 2:39and he washes them anyway.
- 2:43That's the part we sanitize,
- 2:46because it's easier to admire admire
- 2:48Jesus than to let him get that close.
- 2:54Peter understands this tension.
- 2:57He pulls back. "Lord, you will never
- 2:59wash my feet," he says.
- 3:02And if we're honest, that is us, too.
- 3:06We don't mind Jesus on the altar.
- 3:08We don't mind Jesus in a beautiful
- 3:11statue.
- 3:12We don't mind Jesus in in an amazing
- 3:15stained glass window.
- 3:18We don't mind him at a distance.
- 3:22But when he comes too close, enough to
- 3:25touch the parts of our lives that we
- 3:27hide, the parts of the our lives that we
- 3:29resist, "Lord, not that."
- 3:33"Not my past, not my weakness, not that
- 3:36relationship, not that wound,
- 3:40the mistake that I keep falling into,
- 3:42the sin that I keep
- 3:45happening what over and over."
- 3:49But listen to what he says,
- 3:51"Unless I wash you, you have no
- 3:53inheritance with me."
- 3:56In other words, unless you let me love
- 3:58you there,
- 4:01you will never understand what I am
- 4:03about to do.
- 4:06Because the upper upper room is not just
- 4:08about what Jesus gives,
- 4:12it's about how he loves.
- 4:15And how he loves is uncomfortable.
- 4:19It's personal. It's invasive.
- 4:21It gets into places we've learned to
- 4:23keep hidden.
- 4:25And then, as if that weren't enough,
- 4:29he does something even more radical.
- 4:33He takes bread,
- 4:34ordinary bread, fragile, breakable,
- 4:37perishable, and then he says, "This is
- 4:41my body."
- 4:43Then he takes a cup, he says, "This is
- 4:45my blood."
- 4:48It's not poetry. This is not metaphor.
- 4:52This is the moment the universe shifts,
- 4:56because God doesn't just love you from a
- 4:58distance, he gives himself to you as
- 5:01food.
- 5:04Fulton Sheen once said, "The greatest
- 5:06love story of all time is contained in
- 5:09that tiny little white host."
- 5:13The God you cannot contain,
- 5:16the God that you cannot make himself
- 5:18small enough to
- 5:20to control.
- 5:24God remains in you, which means this,
- 5:27every time you receive the Eucharist,
- 5:30you're watching You're not watching the
- 5:33Last Supper, you are in it.
- 5:37You're not remembering Calvary, you are
- 5:39standing at its edge.
- 5:42You are not near God, you are receiving
- 5:45God.
- 5:46And here's where I need to push you,
- 5:49because if we don't say this clearly, we
- 5:51miss everything.
- 5:54The tragedy is not that people don't
- 5:56come to mass.
- 5:58The tragedy is that people come and
- 6:00don't realize who is here.
- 6:05We walk up, we receive the body of
- 6:07Christ, and walk away unchanged.
- 6:10Same old, same old.
- 6:12Not because he lacks power,
- 6:15because we've become
- 6:18we've learned to live in distraction.
- 6:22We've reduced the Eucharist to something
- 6:24familiar, routine, optional.
- 6:28But tonight Jesus shatters that
- 6:30illusion. He says, "This is my body
- 6:33given up for you."
- 6:36Not given up for the world in general,
- 6:38he's saying for you. He's looking in
- 6:40your eyes and saying for you,
- 6:43personally.
- 6:46And if that's true, whether you believe
- 6:48it or not,
- 6:50then the question is no longer, "Do I
- 6:52get some Did I get something out of
- 6:54mass?"
- 6:56The question becomes, "What am I willing
- 6:58to give in return?"
- 7:02Because the Eucharist is not a spiritual
- 7:03comfort.
- 7:05It is a transformation.
- 7:08It's not meant to leave you where you
- 7:10are,
- 7:12which brings us back to the towel.
- 7:16Cuz right after giving them himself, he
- 7:19says something almost impossible.
- 7:23"As I have done for you, you must also
- 7:25do."
- 7:27Not to admire, not to reflect, but do.
- 7:31In other words, if you receive me, you
- 7:33must become like me,
- 7:36which means you don't get to stay at the
- 7:38table.
- 7:40You have to get up.
- 7:43You have to move towards the person
- 7:44you've been avoiding.
- 7:47You have to love the person who doesn't
- 7:48deserve that love. You have to forgive
- 7:51when it costs you something.
- 7:53You have to serve when no one is
- 7:55watching.
- 7:57Because love that stays comfortable is
- 7:59not the love of the upper room.
- 8:04And let me be even more direct, because
- 8:05I know that you can handle it.
- 8:09Tonight Jesus steps right into your
- 8:10messiness,
- 8:12not to shame you,
- 8:14not to expose you,
- 8:16but to set you free.
- 8:19And he doesn't wait for the perfect
- 8:20moment. He doesn't wait for you to be
- 8:22ready.
- 8:23He moves now.
- 8:25He kneels before you and he says, "Let
- 8:29me wash you."
- 8:33Because what he offers tonight is not
- 8:34meant to be postponed.
- 8:37It's too powerful for that.
- 8:40It's too powerful to leave you
- 8:41unchanged.
- 8:44In a few moments, I will wash the feet
- 8:46of 12 people,
- 8:48but don't watch it like a ritual.
- 8:51See it for what it is, a mirror.
- 8:54Because the real question is not whether
- 8:56I will kneel tonight, the real question
- 8:58is whether you will.
- 9:02When you leave this church, will you
- 9:04finally say, "Lord, if you are willing
- 9:06to kneel and wash my feet,
- 9:09then I will go and kneel and wash
- 9:11others."
- 9:13Because this is the truth.
- 9:16The world does not need any more
- 9:18Catholic spectators. It needs witnesses,
- 9:22men and women who have been so changed
- 9:24by the Eucharist that they become
- 9:26Eucharistic, broken, given, poured out.
- 9:31So, my brothers and sisters,
- 9:33tonight you are in the upper room.
- 9:36The table is set. The towel is in his
- 9:39hands, ready to be tied around his
- 9:41waist.
- 9:42And he's looking at you, right into your
- 9:44eyes.
- 9:46The only question left is this,
- 9:49will you let him love you there?
- 9:53And will you love like that out there?
- 9:58Because when your life is laid bare
- 10:00before God, it will be measured by not
- 10:03by how safely you lived
- 10:06or how hard you tried to bend his will
- 10:10to yours.
- 10:12It will be measured by surrender.
- 10:15By whether you trusted him enough to let
- 10:17go and gave your life away in love.
- 10:22And in the end, only one thing will
- 10:24remain.
- 10:26Whether you allowed his love to shape
- 10:28you
- 10:30until you became love for his kingdom
- 10:34or whether you held back
- 10:37and chose to do it your way.
- 10:41The choice is yours.
- 10:43Christ is waiting.
- 10:45Amen. Amen.
