- 0:00Excuse me, that is my cart you just
- 0:02took.
- 0:03>> I'm sorry, I thought this was mine.
- 0:04>> No, you definitely took it from that
- 0:06aisle.
- 0:08Section 4, paragraph B. No visible
- 0:10clotheslines in the yard.
- 0:12>> Are you serious right now, Linda? We are
- 0:13standing in the middle of a grocery
- 0:15store.
- 0:16>> It was supposed to be a normal Saturday
- 0:17morning when I stopped at my local
- 0:20grocery store to buy supplies for my
- 0:22family. I had no idea that one shopping
- 0:25trip would turn into the most ridiculous
- 0:27confrontation of my life. I was
- 0:29purchasing groceries for my household
- 0:32and picking up extra supplies for a
- 0:34small community food donation. My cart
- 0:37was full, but every single item was paid
- 0:39for with my own money. Then I noticed a
- 0:41familiar face staring at my shopping
- 0:43cart from across the produce section. It
- 0:45was Linda Whitmore, the self-appointed
- 0:48queen of our neighborhood HOA. "Stay out
- 0:51of my cart!" she shouted, even though
- 0:53the groceries were mine. I stared at
- 0:55her, wondering whether she had somehow
- 0:58confused the supermarket with an HOA
- 1:00meeting. Linda announced that residents
- 1:02from our neighborhood were not allowed
- 1:04to purchase more than a certain amount
- 1:06of groceries. Apparently, she had
- 1:08invented shopping limits and expected
- 1:11everyone to follow them. I calmly asked
- 1:13her who had given her the authority to
- 1:15control what customers purchase inside a
- 1:18private business. She looked at me as if
- 1:20I had just questioned the president of
- 1:22the United States. Our argument was
- 1:24getting louder and soon several shoppers
- 1:27had stopped to watch. I wasn't
- 1:29interested in making a scene, but Linda
- 1:31seemed determined to turn my grocery
- 1:32trip into a public trial. When I tried
- 1:35to continue shopping, Linda stepped
- 1:38directly in front of my cart and refused
- 1:40to move. That was when I realized this
- 1:42woman wasn't going to stop until someone
- 1:45explained how the real world worked.
- 1:48Fortunately,
- 1:49the store manager noticed the
- 1:50disturbance and walked over to
- 1:52investigate. His name was Marcus Reed,
- 1:55and he immediately asked what was
- 1:56happening. Linda immediately took
- 1:59control of the
- 2:01claiming that she represented the
- 2:02neighborhood HOA. She demanded that
- 2:05Marcus enforce her shopping limits and
- 2:07prevent me from purchasing the
- 2:08groceries. Marcus turned toward me and
- 2:11asked for my side of the story. I
- 2:13explained that I was a regular customer
- 2:15buying groceries for my family and a
- 2:17local food donation. I explained that
- 2:20our local community food pantry had
- 2:22requested extra supplies for families
- 2:24who needed assistance. I had volunteered
- 2:27to purchase those supplies and I was
- 2:29paying for everything myself. Instead of
- 2:32accepting the explanation,
- 2:34Linda became even more aggressive. She
- 2:36demanded that Marcus remove half the
- 2:38groceries because, according to her, I
- 2:41had purchased too much. Marcus calmly
- 2:44explained that the store had no
- 2:45neighborhood shopping quota unless an
- 2:47actual store purchase restriction
- 2:49applied.
- 2:50Linda had absolutely no authority to
- 2:52decide how much I could buy. Linda
- 2:54pulled out her phone and threatened to
- 2:56report Marcus to corporate management.
- 2:59She insisted that someone important
- 3:00would surely support her imaginary
- 3:02shopping restrictions. Then Linda
- 3:05announced that she was calling the
- 3:06police. She claimed I was causing a
- 3:08public disturbance by refusing to obey
- 3:10her neighborhood shopping regulations.
- 3:13About 10 minutes later,
- 3:15two police officers walked through the
- 3:17supermarket entrance. Linda immediately
- 3:19rushed toward them, convinced that they
- 3:21would force me to follow her rules.
- 3:23Linda told the officers that I was
- 3:25violating shopping limits and refusing
- 3:28to cooperate with community regulations.
- 3:30She described my completely ordinary
- 3:32grocery cart as if it were evidence of a
- 3:34serious offense. One officer approached
- 3:37me and politely asked what had happened.
- 3:40I explained everything from Linda's
- 3:42first confrontation to her demand that
- 3:45the store enforce her personal shopping
- 3:47limits. Marcus confirmed my explanation
- 3:50and told the officers that I had done
- 3:51nothing wrong. He also explained that
- 3:54Linda was not a store employee and had
- 3:56no authority over supermarket customers.
- 3:58The officer explained that HOA
- 4:00regulations did not give Lynn authority
- 4:03over a public grocery store. He also
- 4:05told her that the store, not her
- 4:07neighborhood association, determined its
- 4:10customer purchasing policies. For the
- 4:12first time that morning, Lynn had
- 4:14absolutely nothing to say. Her
- 4:16clipboard, her HOA title, and her
- 4:19confident attitude had failed to give
- 4:21her any authority inside that store.
- 4:23Marcus informed Lynn that she needed to
- 4:25stop interfering with customers and
- 4:27allow the store staff to handle store
- 4:29matters. He also made it clear that
- 4:32continued disruptive behavior could
- 4:34result in her being asked to leave.
- 4:36After the officers finished speaking
- 4:37with everyone,
- 4:39I finally continued toward the checkout.
- 4:41I had come to buy groceries,
- 4:43and that was exactly what I intended to
- 4:45do. I paid for every item, collected my
- 4:48receipt, and loaded the groceries into
- 4:50my bags. The total was higher than an
- 4:53ordinary shopping trip, but helping
- 4:55families in need was worth every dollar.
- 4:58Later that afternoon, I delivered the
- 5:00groceries to the local food pantry.
- 5:02Seeing the volunteers organize the
- 5:04supplies reminded me why I had purchased
- 5:07so much in the first place. Word about
- 5:09Lynn's grocery store incident eventually
- 5:11reached the HOA board. Several residents
- 5:14questioned why their HOA president was
- 5:17trying to control people outside the
- 5:18neighborhood. The board reviewed the
- 5:21complaints and decided to remove her
- 5:22from her community enforcement committee
- 5:24role. Lynn finally learned that being an
- 5:27HOA president didn't make her the boss
- 5:29of everyone she encountered. And I
- 5:31learned that sometimes the best way to
- 5:33defeat a control freak is simply to stay
- 5:35calm, know your rights, and keep doing
- 5:37the right thing. If you enjoyed this
