- 0:00hello and welcome to this video on the
- 0:02history of the United States of America
- 0:04from its Beginnings as a group of
- 0:06British colonies to the world superpower
- 0:08it is today the United States has a rich
- 0:11and complex history that has shaped the
- 0:13world we live in let's begin
- 0:16the story of the United States begins
- 0:19with the arrival of the first Europeans
- 0:21led by Christopher Columbus in 1492 the
- 0:25first permanent English settlement was
- 0:27established in Jamestown Virginia in
- 0:291607 followed by the pilgrims who landed
- 0:32at Plymouth Massachusetts in 1620. over
- 0:36time the 13 British colonies grew and
- 0:38developed their own unique cultures
- 0:40eventually leading to the American
- 0:42Revolution in 1775.
- 0:45the American Revolution which lasted
- 0:48from 1775 to 1783 was a struggle for
- 0:52independence from British rule it was
- 0:55led by iconic figures such as George
- 0:57Washington Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin
- 1:00Franklin in 1783 the Treaty of Paris was
- 1:04signed recognizing the United States as
- 1:07a new nation
- 1:08the founding fathers then drafted the
- 1:10constitution in 1787 which established
- 1:14the federal government with three
- 1:15branches the legislative executive and
- 1:18judicial George Washington became the
- 1:21first president of the United States in
- 1:231789 and the nation's capital was
- 1:26established in Washington D.C
- 1:29throughout the 19th century the United
- 1:32States grew and expanded its territory
- 1:34often through conflict with other
- 1:36nations and native peoples the Louisiana
- 1:39Purchase in 1803 doubled the size of the
- 1:42country and the Mexican-American war in
- 1:451846 to 1848 added even more territory
- 1:49slavery was a major issue during this
- 1:52time leading to the Civil War from 1861
- 1:55to 1865.
- 1:58following the Civil War the country went
- 2:00through a period of reconstruction and
- 2:03industrialization the 13th 14th and 15th
- 2:07amendments were added to the
- 2:08Constitution abolishing slavery granting
- 2:11citizenship to former slaves and
- 2:13guaranteeing the right to vote
- 2:15regardless of race the Industrial
- 2:17Revolution also transformed the nation
- 2:20with new technologies leading to mass
- 2:22production and increased wealth
- 2:25the 20th century saw the United States
- 2:27rise to become a world superpower with
- 2:30two world wars and the Cold War shaping
- 2:33the nation's foreign policy the United
- 2:35States entered World War One in 1917
- 2:38helping to defeat Germany and its allies
- 2:40in World War II the United States
- 2:43entered after the attack on Pearl Harbor
- 2:45in 1941 eventually leading to the defeat
- 2:49of Germany and Japan
- 2:51the Cold War was a conflict between the
- 2:54United States and the Soviet Union
- 2:55lasting from the end of World War II to
- 2:58the early 1990s this conflict led to the
- 3:01arms race the space race and a global
- 3:04struggle for influence and Power
- 3:07throughout the 20th century the United
- 3:10States also experienced major social and
- 3:12political changes the Civil Rights
- 3:15Movement led by figures such as Martin
- 3:17Luther King fought against segregation
- 3:19and discrimination against African
- 3:22Americans women's rights and other
- 3:24social justice movements also gained
- 3:26momentum leading to significant changes
- 3:29in law and Society
- 3:31in recent years the United States has
- 3:34faced new challenges and changes the
- 3:37terrorist attacks of September 11 2001
- 3:40led to new Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan
- 3:43and increased focus on National Security
- 3:46the election of Barack Obama as the
- 3:49first African-American president in 2008
- 3:52marked a significant milestone in the
- 3:54country's history
- 3:56in conclusion from the earliest settlers
- 3:59to the present day the United States has
- 4:01a history full of triumphs and
- 4:03challenges progress and setbacks its
- 4:07impact on the world is vast and
- 4:08far-reaching and its influence is felt
- 4:11in many areas from culture and
- 4:14entertainment to politics and economics
- 4:16as the country continues to grow and
- 4:19evolve it will undoubtedly face new
- 4:21challenges and opportunities but its
- 4:24Rich history will continue to inform and
- 4:26shape its future
