- 1:00get started and let's see what's
- 1:01happening in chapters 5 and six of born
- 1:03blood and
- 1:06fire now then in chapter 5 chastin
- 1:09examines the early days of Latin
- 1:10America's first governments and the
- 1:12study outline is on page 3.2 in this
- 1:14chapter chastin discusses how these
- 1:16early governments suffered from a lack
- 1:18of resources and numerous obstacles the
- 1:20Persistence of hierarchical structures
- 1:22and how economic stagnation Dash the
- 1:24hopes of idealistic Patriots liberal
- 1:26political ideology particularly that of
- 1:28what the United States was promoting
- 1:30clashed with the traditional societies
- 1:31left over from the colonial era
- 1:33conservative ideals appealed to the
- 1:35common people especially due to the
- 1:36legacy of the Catholic Church thus as we
- 1:38saw last week ideas like hegemony and
- 1:40patriarchy were still persistent
- 1:42economic Devastation from the wars for
- 1:44Independence was still a problem
- 1:45therefore any attempt by liberal
- 1:46governments to develop their nations
- 1:48were effectively stillborn many
- 1:51politicians viewed government as a means
- 1:53of personal enrichment and the C system
- 1:54leadership would be firmly established
- 1:57among the most infamous from the period
- 1:58were Juan Manuel D Ro in Argentina and
- 2:01Antonio Lopez and Santa Ana in Mexico
- 2:03many constitutions were written to
- 2:04reflect this political reality in which
- 2:06power was in the hands of the gdio or
- 2:07the military while federalism broke up
- 2:09some of the larger political units like
- 2:10greater Colombia and Central America on
- 2:13the other hand as Chine points out
- 2:15Brazil had a different path of
- 2:16development as European monarchy slavery
- 2:19the role of the church and the cash crop
- 2:20economy of coffee all combined to ensure
- 2:22that Brazil was a bit more stable
- 2:24compared to its Spanish-speaking
- 2:25neighbors later later on in the chapter
- 2:28chastin talks about the idea of TR
- 2:29culturation again as well as nativism
- 2:31and hegemony as for the lives of women
- 2:34they were excluded from the major
- 2:35changes brought about by Independence
- 2:37but some did achieve fame by having
- 2:39connections to powerful men or by
- 2:41breaking gender rules or both the cast
- 2:43system that was a Hallmark of the
- 2:45colonial era still persisted but wealth
- 2:46was more of the determining Factor not
- 2:49so much race anymore in terms of
- 2:51international relations and economy most
- 2:52of the Latin American republics were
- 2:54ored toward England France and the
- 2:56United States for liberals these
- 2:58epitomized progress and civiliz ation
- 3:00international trade was predicated on
- 3:02export economies like coffee and sugar
- 3:04but in Peru it was bird pooo or guano
- 3:07that was highly priced in Europe for its
- 3:08fertilizer capabilities not surprisingly
- 3:11because of the economic benefits of the
- 3:14region gunbook diplomacy was standard
- 3:16practice of both the European powers and
- 3:18the United States to protect their
- 3:20interests then the chapter concludes
- 3:21with the discussion of the US Mexico
- 3:23which resulted in the US annexing half
- 3:25of Mexico's territory which is now
- 3:26places like California New Mexico
- 3:28Arizona and portions of Colorado and
- 3:30Utah I felt Justine could have discussed
- 3:32this topic earlier in the chapter or
- 3:33maybe in another but I do understand the
- 3:35problem he may have had with discussing
- 3:37the subject the US Mexico War has been
- 3:39sometimes viewed as a radioactive
- 3:41subject in both us and Latin American
- 3:43history it something doesn't really fit
- 3:44the narrative on the larger scope of
- 3:46these histories especially with the US
- 3:48that war seemed to contradict the ideals
- 3:50that the nation stood for and since
- 3:51Civil War started just over a decade
- 3:54since the end of the US Mexico War it's
- 3:55not very surprised that older United
- 3:57States history books from the first half
- 3:59of the 20 Century tended to ignore that
- 4:01episode but on the other hand that war
- 4:03is a defining moment in Cho history and
- 4:05it's a standard Topic in those classes
- 4:07let's move on now to chapter 6 The study
- 4:09outline is on page 3.3 and in this
- 4:12chapter chess discusses the notion of
- 4:14progress and that's certainly been a
- 4:16complicated issue in Latin America on
- 4:17many levels one could make the case that
- 4:19the region has had a love fate
- 4:21relationship with that idea so what does
- 4:23progress mean within the context of
- 4:25Latin America well as chastine points
- 4:27out to start the chapter conservatism
- 4:29was the dominant political philosophy in
- 4:30the aftermath of Independence but after
- 4:32the 1850s liberalism made a comeback and
- 4:35by liberalism this mainly refers to the
- 4:36expansion of economic markets and much
- 4:38like what was happening in the United
- 4:41States around this time were seen in the
- 4:43region developments in transportation
- 4:44and Communications especially with the
- 4:46railroads but the ideological
- 4:48underpinnings underpinnings of progress
- 4:50correlate to what's happening with
- 4:51Europe in the aftermath of the
- 4:52Industrial Revolution as well as the
- 4:55consolidation of nation states like
- 4:56Germany and Italy of course Great
- 4:58Britain was still the dominant European
- 5:00power at the time however as chastine
- 5:02points out the Catholic church was one
- 5:04conservative stronghold still powerful
- 5:05in the region and Ben thees and his
- 5:07liberal allies in Mexico sure found that
- 5:09out the hard way but wus was just one of
- 5:12many liberal leaders who felt that there
- 5:13was no reason why Mexico could not
- 5:14develop along lines of the United States
- 5:17whis really admired the idea of Thomas
- 5:18Jefferson this notion of an a greatan
- 5:20republic and self-sufficient nation of
- 5:22farmers but conservatives were not too
- 5:24happy with this idea and conservatives
- 5:26not once but twice tried to sabotage W's
- 5:29plans this is where the the French
- 5:31intervention period comes in and this is
- 5:33when the famous Sink of the Mario battle
- 5:34in 1862 takes place just as a side note
- 5:37keep in mind that Mexico was already an
- 5:39independent nation for 40 years when
- 5:40this battle happened it's not Mexican
- 5:42Independence Day although the beer
- 5:43companies would certainly have you to
- 5:45believe that in addition to Mexico then
- 5:48chestin talks about the liberal Trends
- 5:49in Colombia Chile and Central America
- 5:51well in Central America that was fa of
- 5:53mind to study at Sano state was
- 5:54Guatemala and of course hear about
- 5:56Guatemala now with the immigration
- 5:58crisis along the border as as for women
- 6:00they saw few benefits from liberalism
- 6:02education expanded very slowly and few
- 6:04occupied leading roles in public life
- 6:06but some did achieve fame through
- 6:07writing such as Han Manuela gorti and
- 6:10clorina M the Turner meanwhile in
- 6:12Argentina you had people like Domingo
- 6:14foso sento who were obsessed with
- 6:17European ideals of progress to the point
- 6:19that they accepted scientific racism
- 6:21ideas this is the same kind of Ann you
- 6:23saw in the United States in the early
- 6:2420th century that believed that
- 6:25African-Americans Asians and people of
- 6:27Southern and Eastern European descent
- 6:29were somehow inferior to the Nordic
- 6:31people of northern and western Europe
- 6:33for example sento believed that the G
- 6:35populations were subhuman meanw well in
- 6:37Brazil factors like monarchy slavery and
- 6:39the mixed race population made it
- 6:41virtually impossible for Liberal
- 6:42thinking to take root early on but after
- 6:45the war Triple Alliance gradually
- 6:46liberalism began to slowly creep in in
- 6:48fact Brazil's flag has the motto or
- 6:51Progresso which means order and progress
- 6:54now one major theme in this class that
- 6:55I'd like to present is how mural art
- 6:57promotes themes of power self-id
- 6:59ification nationalism Etc and that's
- 7:01absolutely evident in the Treasure we
- 7:03have here in san county that of course
- 7:04being Cho Park but to get a a preview of
- 7:07the power and the Grandeur of this type
- 7:08of artwork let's check out the
- 7:10PowerPoint program on the Diego deda
- 7:12Detroit industry mural series we'll
- 7:14start off with a trip to the Motor City
- 7:15and many of the graphics that you'll see
- 7:17are from my own personal collection of
- 7:18photos that I've taken over the years of
- 7:20netto's work in Detroit as well as some
- 7:22photos of some actual newspaper
- 7:24clippings from the Detroit News
- 7:25newspapers at the time and it's a result
- 7:27of a visit I made to Detroit to see the
- 7:28Diego and frao exhibit at the Detroit
- 7:31Institute of Arts in 2015 which
- 7:33commemorated the time in which both
- 7:35artists were in Detroit during 1932 1933
- 7:37while he was working on the murals many
- 7:39art historians contend that Detroit was
- 7:41a pivotal moment for both of them that
- 7:43period marked the creative Zenith of
- 7:46Diego's career but it also marked the
- 7:48origins of freda's emergence as a
- 7:50well-known and popular artist in fact
- 7:51one could make the case that Freda is
- 7:53more popular today than her husband in
- 7:55terms of popular culture but for the
- 7:57murals themselves what Riva captures is
- 7:59a pivotal moment in uh US history on so
- 8:01many levels this amazing NE series
- 8:03examines labor themes popular American
- 8:05culture as evidenced by the inclusion of
- 8:07movie stars like Jee harlo and Comic
- 8:10characters like the cats and Jammer kids
- 8:12there's also coverage of us Latin
- 8:14American relations the development of
- 8:15American industry and of course the
- 8:17emergence of O Henry Ford as an
- 8:19industrial celebrity and as an artist of
- 8:21course we'll see more of Old Henry when
- 8:23we start the Ford landia readings but
- 8:25what Retta tried to convey was a notion
- 8:27that industry is like a work of art or
- 8:29Symphony there are so many parts that
- 8:31are connected uh in intricate ways which
- 8:33create a masterpiece in other words
- 8:35foretta the final product the 1932 Ford
- 8:38V8 car is not what is the objective it
- 8:40is the process the interplay of human
- 8:42labor with Machinery that is what is
- 8:44most important so when you see the
- 8:45murals in person you get the idea of the
- 8:48power and Majesty of American industry
- 8:50Through The Eyes of Diego Riva to me
- 8:52Riva industry as something of an art
- 8:54form not so much a tool of the
- 8:56capitalist class to exploit the workers
- 8:58but of course Retta certainly shows his
- 8:59support for the working class at various
- 9:00intervals of the mural series and I
- 9:02examine that in the PowerPoint program
- 9:03so yes please check out the program and
- 9:05don't feel overwhelmed by the amount of
- 9:07detail that I present what I tried to do
- 9:09was convey a panorama where you start by
- 9:12looking at the East wall of the murals
- 9:14and then the rest of the cardinal points
- 9:16buta is trying to tell you a story when
- 9:18you're there at the Museum I'm going try
- 9:20to convey his perspective to all of you
- 9:22like a most amazing examples of artwork
- 9:25R created an amazing Masterpiece that
- 9:26can be interpreted by multiple points of
- 9:28view depending on your own perspective
- 9:30capitalists will praise the work as a
- 9:31shining examples of the wonders of
- 9:33Industry while workers will Marvel at
- 9:35the apparent Pro labor themes but I
- 9:37think for chanos mexican-americans uh
- 9:39retta's work helped to bridge the gap
- 9:40between the Revolutionary rhetoric of
- 9:42the Mexican Revolution which will cover
- 9:44uh more later on in the session and the
- 9:47day-to-day issues facing uh
- 9:49working-class chos and other people of
- 9:50color such as Asians and
- 9:52African-Americans some of whom are
- 9:53featured in the mural series but ev's
- 9:55powerful Masterpiece in an urban United
- 9:58States setting would set a template for
- 9:59future Cho artists to follow in their
- 10:02respective cities especially the the
- 10:03Sago artists who developed Cho Park in
- 10:05the late 1960s and early 1970s and we'll
- 10:08actually see more Cho par in this module
- 10:09so let's move on now to page 3.4 on page
- 10:133.4 is both the film which was produced
- 10:15in the late 1980s as well as a detailed
- 10:17summary about the film this documentary
- 10:20provides you with an excellent look at
- 10:21the factors leading up to the creation
- 10:23of the park as well as the major movers
- 10:25and shakers of both the park development
- 10:27and the Forma stages of M among the
- 10:29people will meet include Victor Ooa one
- 10:32of the first muralists to work on the
- 10:34project Chana artist Yolanda Lopez who
- 10:36talks about the struggles that some of
- 10:37the chigas had to deal with and the lake
- 10:39gr Ramon chuny Sanchez the longtime head
- 10:42of the park steering committee chuny
- 10:43passed away in 2016 but he left an
- 10:46enduring Legacy for organizing and music
- 10:48music that will never be forgotten also
- 10:50included with the film and summary is a
- 10:52brief video from the Sano Union Tribune
- 10:53about one of the more recent And Timely
- 10:55murals which indicates that the park and
- 10:57its murals today are not m historical
- 10:59and cultural relics but are reflection
- 11:01of the Contemporary realities facing the
- 11:03Cho Community today so check out all
- 11:05this on page 3.4 and be sure to get to
- 11:07know the various artists and activists
- 11:08mentioned in the film there will be a
- 11:10few questions on them coming up in Quiz
- 11:123 now finally let's talk about Foria
- 11:15this week please check out the
- 11:16introduction chapter as well as part one
- 11:17of the book which covers chapters 1-8
- 11:20the themes of progress and
- 11:21neocolonialism certainly permeate the
- 11:23story and on page 3.5 is a list of key
- 11:25terms and Concepts that correlate with
- 11:27these readings my suggestion to you is
- 11:29that you print out the worksheet and as
- 11:31you go through the readings write down
- 11:33the page numbers where the topic is
- 11:34mentioned this way I can easily refer
- 11:36back to those topics since the next Quiz
- 11:38we'll have coverage of the story but the
- 11:40main thing I want to mention about the
- 11:41fora story for now and I'll certainly
- 11:43say more about the story in the next two
- 11:44modules is that Greg grin's book can be
- 11:47considered as a parable in that the
- 11:49excessive Pride that Mr Ford and his
- 11:50people had in trying to establish a
- 11:52rubber Plantation in the middle of the
- 11:54Amazon basin is a testament to how
- 11:56pervasive this idea of American
- 11:57exceptionalism really is and the idea
- 12:00that Henry Ford's model of efficiency or
- 12:02fordism uh can easily be transplanted
- 12:05from Deerborne to the Amazon basin if
- 12:07you want to see how fordism really works
- 12:09I highly recommend you watch Charlie
- 12:10Chaplin's amazing film modern times it
- 12:13was his last major silent film for that
- 12:15era in Hollywood films but as we're
- 12:18trying to impose fordism in the Amazon
- 12:20you just can't do that type of stuff for
- 12:21a variety of reasons gron begins to
- 12:23outline those reasons early on in the
- 12:25book and in the book gron also refers to
- 12:27the Warner herock film fits coraldo
- 12:29which is a perfect metaphor for the
- 12:30madness in trying to tame and conquer
- 12:32the Amazon re region but in the
- 12:35introduction to fortlandia you get a
- 12:36sense of the Protestant mentality that
- 12:38drove Henry fort in the first place and
- 12:40how as grandon put it that made Fort
- 12:42landia quintessentially American was the
- 12:44way frustrated idealism was built into
- 12:46its conception Ford essentially
- 12:48subscribed to the idea of primitive
- 12:50americanism which in a way was the early
- 12:5220 Century version of the idea of
- 12:54manifest destiny then part one of the
- 12:56book gr provides an excellent Panorama
- 12:58of the the forces that led to the
- 13:00conception of fordlandia we read about
- 13:02Ford's early days in terms of business
- 13:04with his early fourways into Politics
- 13:06the expansion of the robber trade which
- 13:08chasen uh discussed in chapter 7 of born
- 13:10blood and fire us involvement in World
- 13:12War I Ford's relations with his workers
- 13:15his anti-Semitism the politics of Brazil
- 13:17that created the conditions for for L's
- 13:19conception the geography of the Amazon
- 13:21the antics of some of his men and in
- 13:22their attempt to promote Mr Ford's
- 13:24Vision in a way Fords men were kind of
- 13:27like acted like the k who acted in their
- 13:29own interest when they came to the new
- 13:30world in the 16th century like cores and
- 13:33pisaro King Carlos ofth had an awful
- 13:35time controlling these guys now some of
- 13:37these guys mentioned in the story
- 13:38certainly gave Old Henry many s
- 13:40sleepless nights and I'll list a few of
- 13:42those wacky characters in the study
- 13:44guide well again everyone now I'm back
- 13:46with you for the remainder of this video
- 13:48before I get to the nuts and bolts items
- 13:49in the module such as the third na
- 13:51report on the America review I need to
- 13:53make an addendum to a couple of pages
- 13:55that I just discussed I did incorrectly
- 13:57give you the wrong page numbers in the
- 13:59audio portion so just to clarify on page
- 14:013.4 is the Diego DEA program and
- 14:03included with that page are a couple of
- 14:05videos about the mural series including
- 14:07one from the Detroit industry of arts
- 14:09and on page 3.5 with the Cho Park film
- 14:11unfortunately the video about Sal baraha
- 14:13sub mural in Cho Park was removed by the
- 14:16Sago Union Tribune people but the
- 14:17article is still there so just go ahead
- 14:19and read the Union Tribune article on
- 14:21baras uh 2017 mural as for fordlandia
- 14:24part one of fordlandia as I mentioned
- 14:25takes us through the late 1920s before
- 14:27the start of the Great Depression
- 14:29when Henry Ford was the seemly on top of
- 14:31the world as both an industrialist and
- 14:33International Celebrity too now coming
- 14:35up in module 4 I'll describe more about
- 14:36the key events happening in part two of
- 14:38the Ford fordlandia story now let's get
- 14:41to the nuts and bolts items on page 3.7
- 14:44you find the directions for the third
- 14:45and final na report on the Americas but
- 14:47this time your focus is going to be on
- 14:49uh South America and at the bottom of
- 14:51page 3.7 is the series of articles on
- 14:53agents like Argentina Ecuador Brazil
- 14:56Chile and Peru on page 3.8 is the PDF
- 14:59copy of Quiz 3 and Quiz 3 itself will
- 15:01appear on page 3.9 at the conclusion of
- 15:03this module now with respect to
- 15:05unfinished business don't forget that
- 15:06quiz 2 is currently open so check the
- 15:08details above me uh for the uh exact due
- 15:10dat and your first Knack report on the
- 15:12market is going to be due very soon soon
- 15:14too so the the details above me for that
- 15:17uh you can find you can find that right
- 15:19above me as well all right everyone I
- 15:21think that takes care of what's
- 15:22Happening Here in module 3 I'll be back
- 15:24with you very soon uh for the start of
- 15:26module 4 as we begin to approach the
- 15:28halfway point of the
