  68. 4:19the creation of Coca-Cola as the most
  69. 4:21recognized brand name on Earth is a
  70. 4:24story of marketing genius that begins
  71. 4:26over a century
  72. 4:28ago are now

  81. 5:08for their
  82. 5:09nerves they are the perfect prey for a
  83. 5:11new Army of medicine men selling patent
  84. 5:14Elixir ladies and gentlemen it has been
  85. 5:17my great privilege many years ago whilst

  94. 5:41on the cobblestone streets of Atlanta a
  95. 5:43patent Medicine Man Named John Stith
  96. 5:46pton hurries back to his lab like many
  97. 5:49Civil War veterans wounded in battle
  98. 5:51pton is addicted to morphine and looking
  99. 5:54for a cure some people collect stamps
  100. 5:56and coins or baseball cards or whatever
  101. 5:59card s i set out to collect
  102. 6:02information about John pimberton because
  103. 6:05I realized early on that practically
  104. 6:07nothing was known about the man you'd
  105. 6:09think that the creator of the uh most
  106. 6:12successful commercial product in the
  107. 6:14history of mankind you'd think that we
  108. 6:15know a little bit about
  109. 6:17him John pton was a genius who knew a
  110. 6:22great deal about different herbs and as
  111. 6:24the steam ships began to bring more and
  112. 6:26more exotic ingredients from all over
  113. 6:28the world and he started Ed reading
  114. 6:30about these in international drug
  115. 6:31journals he became very excited about
  116. 6:34the properties of the cocoa Leaf from
  117. 6:36Peru and the colon nut from West Africa
  118. 6:39I think he was particularly interested
  119. 6:41in the cocoa Leaf because he saw cocaine
  120. 6:44which is the principal alkaloid of the
  121. 6:46coca leaf he saw cocaine as a possible
  122. 6:49way to get off of
  123. 6:54morphine pton begins his experiments by
  124. 6:57combining the extracts of the co leaf
  125. 7:00and the cola nut in his version of a
  126. 7:02popular French wine
  127. 7:05drink cocaine the latest wonder drug is
  128. 7:09widely believed to relieve fatigue and
  129. 7:11increase sexual
  130. 7:13desire the cola nut adds a dose of
  131. 7:19caffeine soon pemberton's French wine
  132. 7:22coka is selling as an exotic Cur all it
  133. 7:26may not be that but the buzz is
  134. 7:28unmistakable
  135. 7:30in
  136. 7:321885 Atlanta voted to go dry and so he
  137. 7:36decided that he'd better take the
  138. 7:38alcohol content out of French wine cocoa
  139. 7:41and he modified it over the uh winter of
  140. 7:431885 886 and by may he had perfected it
  141. 7:47and he had named it Coca-Cola pton went
  142. 7:50down to Joseph Jacob's Pharmacy in
  143. 7:52downtown Atlanta one of the most popular
  144. 7:53soda fountains in the town and he had a
  145. 7:55flask with him it was marked Coca-Cola
  146. 7:57syrup and he asked the soda Fountain
  147. 7:59clerk if you don't mind put about an
  148. 8:01ounce of this in the bottom of a glass
  149. 8:03it's good for headaches and what have
  150. 8:04you so the man turned to a person at the
  151. 8:08soda fountain who had had a little bit
  152. 8:10too much to drink the night before and
  153. 8:12said we got something for headaches and
  154. 8:14a hangover you should
  155. 8:16try and it seemed to work pretty
  156. 8:19well on May 29th pton places the first
  157. 8:23Coca-Cola ad in the Atlanta Journal his
  158. 8:25partner works on a logo while pton looks
  159. 8:28for a way to D distribute his drink
  160. 8:30pimberton found a bargain on barrels
  161. 8:34that he could ship the syrup in and they
  162. 8:35were already red and it just happened to
  163. 8:38be a color that would uh would
  164. 8:40distinctively identify his product soon
  165. 8:43a red and white Banner hangs outside
  166. 8:45Jacob's Pharmacy advertising Coca-Cola
  167. 8:48in an elegant new script and the logo
  168. 8:51looks like it just might
  169. 8:54last but Coca-Cola never brings its
  170. 8:56inventor his fortune or his cure at 57
  171. 9:00still hooked on morphine an alien pton
  172. 9:03sells off the pieces of his company he
  173. 9:06dies peniles never knowing his formula
  174. 9:09will make countless others rich
  175. 9:13[Music]
  176. 9:34in 1888 a pharmacist and devout
  177. 9:37Methodist picks up the pieces of John
  178. 9:39pemberton's failed dream he is one of a
  179. 9:42new breed of Southern businessmen who
  180. 9:44believe in making money as a form of
  181. 9:51worship this is a portrait of my great
  182. 9:53great-grandfather ASA Griggs Cananda who
  183. 9:55was the founder of the Coca-Cola company
  184. 9:57and is quite often referred to in
  185. 9:58Atlanta as the Coca-Cola
  186. 10:03King Ace has suffered from really severe
  187. 10:06headaches and a friend recommended that
  188. 10:09he go down to Jacob's Pharmacy that
  189. 10:10there was a new product that pimberton
  190. 10:12had come up with called Coca-Cola and it
  191. 10:14was a headache and hangover remedy so
  192. 10:17ASA traes down there to triath and he
  193. 10:18was immediately relieved he decided
  194. 10:21right then and there he had to buy the
  195. 10:23formula Candler is a devoted family man
  196. 10:27a Sunday school teacher and a committed
  197. 10:30capitalist he modifies the flavorings of
  198. 10:32pemberton's formula and code names them
  199. 10:367x obsessed with secrecy Candler removes
  200. 10:40the labels from the ingredients never
  201. 10:42writes down the formula and does his own
  202. 10:45mixing behind the locked Gates of his
  203. 10:47Atlanta Mansion he treated it like the
  204. 10:49holy of holies it was a very secretive
  205. 10:52procedure only certain people were
  206. 10:54allowed to be there and you had to be
  207. 10:56able to smell the ingredients and know
  208. 10:58that they were right in be able to taste
  209. 11:00it he had to be able to roll that syrup
  210. 11:01over his tongue and know that the
  211. 11:04mixture was
  212. 11:06correct he referred to Coca-Cola all of
  213. 11:08his life as my golden Elixir and he
  214. 11:10believed it with a fervor that many
  215. 11:12missionaries have about their
  216. 11:14faith American advertising really grew
  217. 11:18out of the patent medicine
  218. 11:19industry if you were trying to sell a
  219. 11:22sewing machine you didn't need to
  220. 11:23advertise it people needed sewing
  221. 11:26machines patent medicines nobody really
  222. 11:29did need they really didn't work most of
  223. 11:32them so in order to sell the patent
  224. 11:34medicines you had to really push them
  225. 11:36and you had to make outrageous
  226. 11:39claims candler's claims are directed
  227. 11:41mainly to businessmen a Coca-Cola taken
  228. 11:44at eight he promises energizes the brain
  229. 11:47till 11 like a prophet Candler sends his
  230. 11:51missionaries across the South to promote
  231. 11:53his new drink the outrageous message
  232. 11:56they're delivering is the beginning of
  233. 11:58Modern Advertising
  234. 11:59[Music]
  235. 12:01come let's
  236. 12:03take down to the
  237. 12:07[Music]
  238. 12:15old the soda fountain was an adjunct to
  239. 12:18the drugstore and when these uh drinks
  240. 12:21were purveyed there they were pervade as
  241. 12:24drinks that were refreshing and
  242. 12:26healthful and among them Coca-Cola came
  243. 12:29to be an important
  244. 12:34drink they started getting letters
  245. 12:36particularly from women saying please
  246. 12:39stop advertising this stuff as a patent
  247. 12:42medicine cuz I like it I like to drink
  248. 12:45it I don't want to feel like I have to
  249. 12:46be sick to drink this stuff so Candler
  250. 12:51said hey there are more alive well
  251. 12:54people out there than there are sick
  252. 12:55people why not advertise to the masses
  253. 12:59Coca-Cola as brain tonic soon becomes
  254. 13:02delicious and refreshing a drink for
  255. 13:04young
  256. 13:09moderns next Candler turns his attention
  257. 13:12to women who are an increasingly
  258. 13:14important Market but the seductive and
  259. 13:16wholesome Coca-Cola girl is also meant
  260. 13:19to attract thirsty
  261. 13:20[Music]
  262. 13:23men for the first time Candler is
  263. 13:26selling an image not just a drink and he
  264. 13:29puts that image everywhere they had
  265. 13:32Japanese fans that said Coca-Cola they
  266. 13:34had calendars they had watches they were
  267. 13:36very clever to put it on things that
  268. 13:38people would consult would look at they
  269. 13:39put it on a mirror because people look
  270. 13:41in a mirror they put it on a calendar
  271. 13:43because people look at a calendar they'd
  272. 13:45put it on uh match books because you
  273. 13:47know you strike a match to light your
  274. 13:49pipe or
  275. 13:50whatnot Candler hires itinerant artist
  276. 13:53to paint the logo on barns and the sides
  277. 13:55of
  278. 13:56buildings soon the elegant script can be
  279. 13:58seen in every state and territory in the
  280. 14:01US on the eve of the 20th century
  281. 14:04Candler is selling 36 million coca-colas
  282. 14:07a year and spending an unheard of 20% of
  283. 14:10his revenues on
  284. 14:20Advertising by 1904 Coca-Cola is so
  285. 14:24successful that Candler commissions a
  286. 14:26skyscraper in his own name
  287. 14:30the first building in Atlanta to Tower
  288. 14:32over the church
  289. 14:34[Music]
  290. 14:36Steeples in the Cornerstone he places a
  291. 14:39copper box containing his picture and a
  292. 14:42bottle of
  293. 14:49Coca-Cola the word Coca-Cola was almost
  294. 14:52magic in the early days if you hung a
  295. 14:54canvas sign out you were an immediate
  296. 14:56business success because everybody was
  297. 14:58enamored with the drink and they all
  298. 15:00wanted to try it and if your if your
  299. 15:01Corner Grocery Store sold it then
  300. 15:04immediately people would go there and so
  301. 15:06some other drinks came out these are
  302. 15:08what we refer to gently as
  303. 15:12imitators this is
  304. 15:14coconola and this is Coke k c o k
  305. 15:18e and this one an imitator this is Pepsi
  306. 15:26Cola hit the spot 12
  307. 15:30Pepsi was begun in Newburn North
  308. 15:32Carolina by a young pharmacist named
  309. 15:35Caleb
  310. 15:37bradam he used to always experiment with
  311. 15:39these different uh tonics and and
  312. 15:42formulas and came across one drink that
  313. 15:44became very popular to the locals and it
  314. 15:46was nicknamed by the locals Brad's drink
  315. 15:49like Coca-Cola Brad's drink starts as a
  316. 15:52southern tonic its active ingredient
  317. 15:54pepsin is used to treat indigestion and
  318. 15:57like Coke it Works sort of eventually
  319. 16:01the word had spread out what a good
  320. 16:03drink it was and bradam figured he
  321. 16:04better come up with something that was a
  322. 16:05lot more marketable so I came with the
  323. 16:07name pepsicola
  324. 16:11[Music]
  325. 16:12there were all sorts of people who had
  326. 16:16probably very fine drinks uh but they
  327. 16:19put them in a bottle that used either
  328. 16:20the word coca or Coke or Cola and the
  329. 16:23Coca-Cola Company of course had had
  330. 16:25their trademark for a long long time and
  331. 16:27they said hey wait a minute it's not
  332. 16:29fair to trade on our
  333. 16:31name soon there are scores of imitators
  334. 16:34the upstart Pepsi is selling over half a
  335. 16:36million gallons of syrup a year so
  336. 16:39Candler looks for something
  337. 16:41new what he comes up with is a bottle
  338. 16:44called the hobble
  339. 16:47skirt its inspiration is clear to
  340. 16:50everyone they wanted a very easily
  341. 16:53identifiable bottle something that they
  342. 16:55anyone would know was a Coca-Cola and so
  343. 16:57one of the criteria was a bottle you
  344. 16:59could hold in your hand in the dark and
  345. 17:02know that it was a
  346. 17:03Coca-Cola two bottles of Coca-Cola yeah
  347. 17:06make sure it's Coca-Cola all them
  348. 17:08bottles look pretty much alike not now
  349. 17:10they
  350. 17:12don't is that Coca-Cola yes sir and
  351. 17:15that's the brand new bottle for
  352. 17:17Coca-Cola the hobble skirt bottle they
  353. 17:19patterned it after the hobble skirt
  354. 17:21Betty wears pretty nifty huh I'll take
  355. 17:24the hobble skirt I'll take Betty
  356. 17:27[Music]
  357. 17:30it will be touched by men and women the
  358. 17:32world
  359. 17:33[Music]
  360. 17:35over Generations will embrace
  361. 17:38it artists will be inspired by
  362. 17:42it in darkness it will feel like a
  363. 17:45moment of pleasure is Within
  364. 17:47Reach and in light it will be seen as
  365. 17:51the shape of refreshment
  366. 17:54[Music]
  367. 18:09it's ironic that Coca-Cola had taken all
  368. 18:11of the cocaine out by
  369. 18:131903 and yet people continued to think
  370. 18:16that it had drugs in it it was called
  371. 18:18dope all throughout the South or a shot
  372. 18:21in the arm or a morning's morning or
  373. 18:24Another Brick in the Candler building
  374. 18:27they still use the Coco leaf to this day
  375. 18:29in their drink but they decocainized it
  376. 18:32first so there's absolutely no cocaine
  377. 18:34and Coca-Cola
  378. 18:36anymore in a way the idea that coke had
  379. 18:39this mysterious sinful quality to it
  380. 18:43helped um it wasn't just a soft drink it
  381. 18:47had a little touch of
  382. 18:49[Music]
  383. 18:51sin child oh mother I'm getting off a
  384. 18:56wild I am drinking C coola now if it did
  385. 19:00give it an Allure I will say this I have
  386. 19:03a cousin on the other side of my family
  387. 19:04not connected with Coca-Cola who went to
  388. 19:06school and the head woman in their dorm
  389. 19:09would tell them now girls nice girls
  390. 19:12never ever take two aspin in a Coca-Cola
  391. 19:14it makes you do wild things makes you do
  392. 19:17things you will regret as soon as we

  406. 19:57decided that he hated C ca he didn't
  407. 20:00think that they should have caffeine and
  408. 20:02a drink that children were drinking and
  409. 20:05what Coca-Cola did to defend itself at
  410. 20:07this trial regarding children was to say
  411. 20:09no children don't drink it which was
  412. 20:11Preposterous because clearly they did
  413. 20:14but ever since 1911 Coca-Cola had an
  414. 20:17Unwritten rule never to show a child
  415. 20:20Under 12 in an advertisement drinking
  416. 20:23the beverage so they were sort of put in
  417. 20:26a spot how are they going to appeal to
  418. 20:27Children cuz they still wanted to get
  419. 20:29kids to drink the
  420. 20:31stuff Coca-Cola's answer is to use
  421. 20:34youthful models to come close to the

  439. 21:34skinny guy who often wore green or
  440. 21:37yellow or sometimes
  441. 21:41red in 1931 Coca-Cola hired Haden sunlam

  454. 22:19future those associations that go back
  455. 22:21to an early age are very important to us
  456. 22:23I'm sure you know as I do lots of adults
  457. 22:25who eat the most terrible food and say
  458. 22:27it's wonderful because the way Mama used
  459. 22:29to make it how do we get back the past
  460. 22:32and one of the ways is by consumption so
  461. 22:34that consuming something that brings

  481. 23:25the communications that Coca-Cola is
  482. 23:28giving
  483. 23:29most mostly people had nice thoughts
  484. 23:31about Through The Years great credit all
  485. 23:33the way back to the to the candlers for

  509. 24:38was somebody who had a Coke and it was
  510. 24:42just that much little more brightness in

  512. 24:47times when you wanted a Coca-Cola and
  513. 24:50same with it's the real things we picked
  514. 24:52we picked what the times thought were

  529. 25:33long road for her to come up with and
  530. 25:35when she got out of the car you could
  531. 25:37see she was sophisticated mom and dad
  532. 25:39were corn farmers and that was how the
  533. 25:41commers appros to end and a very smart
  534. 25:43art director named dant toriello saw the
  535. 25:45boy from the farm next door had come
  536. 25:47over in an old truck just to watch the

  538. 25:51to end she can't just come all the way
  539. 25:53home just to see Mom and Dad has to be
  540. 25:55the boy next door so that whole scene of

  553. 26:28was the attitude in in those early days
  554. 26:32but my my job I always thought was to

  712. 34:17going doing vandalism on walls now now
  713. 34:19they go into stalls owners and do like

  718. 34:32because they won't last we can go out
  719. 34:34there and we can actually spray paint

  777. 37:20million dooll images telling us who
  778. 37:23we're supposed to be
  779. 37:26[Music]
  780. 37:28but even in this consumer circus one
  781. 37:30product
  782. 37:33[Music]
  783. 37:34dominates it takes more than material
  784. 37:37things to be happy it takes more than
  785. 37:40that Mercedes it takes more than that
  786. 37:42gold
  787. 37:50bracelet Coca-Cola has been promising us
  788. 37:52happiness ever since Asa Candler first
  789. 37:55packaged image in a bottle
  790. 37:58today the Coca-Cola company is a $150
  791. 38:01billion soft drink Colossus and Coke is
  792. 38:04the most recognized brand name in the
  793. 38:06world pretty smart advertising for a
  794. 38:09sugar drink that started out Life as a
  795. 38:11brain
  796. 38:13tonic ahead
  797. 38:21of you money Saturday night isn't it fun
  798. 38:25you don't m is it
  799. 38:28[Music]
  800. 38:31[Applause]
  801. 38:33[Music]
  802. 38:36that happiness that you get from the
  803. 38:38alcohol is artificial that happiness
  804. 38:41that you get from drugs is artificial
  805. 38:44but there ain't nothing like the real
  806. 38:46thing you need the real thing you need
  807. 38:49real Joy you need real
  808. 38:53happiness you look at CO's advertising
  809. 38:57it's like like a religious
  810. 38:59Mantra Coke is is selling a continuity
  811. 39:04of life through generations and a bond
  812. 39:09through life throughout different
  813. 39:11cultures what is really basic and
  814. 39:14essential about
  815. 39:16humans it goes to the level of a kind of
  816. 39:20spiritual bond
  817. 39:30there's all that Harmony in distinction
  818. 39:33to how someone is actually feeling so
  819. 39:36the sense is I'm not there I wish I
  820. 39:39could live in harmony you know I wish
  821. 39:41the world were this kind of place yes if
  822. 39:44only but there's that Gap you don't get
  823. 39:46there through drinking
  824. 39:49Coke always Coca
  825. 39:56[Music]
  826. 40:07I'd like to talk a little bit here about
  827. 40:09the Coca-Cola museum in Atlanta Georgia
  828. 40:11because I find it such an interesting
  829. 40:13American institution it's visited by a
  830. 40:16very large number of people and when you
  831. 40:17go in and pay your money you're taken to
  832. 40:19the top floor and then the only way to
  833. 40:22get out is by walking down the stairs so
  834. 40:24there's no way not to get the coke
  835. 40:26message the first thing I saw there on
  836. 40:29getting to the top floor was a short
  837. 40:30film in which a man with silver hair and
  838. 40:33a fatherly expression said to us you
  839. 40:37know in the final analysis Coca-Cola
  840. 40:39really doesn't belong to us it belongs
  841. 40:42to you to anyone and to everyone who has
  842. 40:45ever shared a moment with a Coke I had
  843. 40:49the feeling I was in the presence of God
  844. 40:51um then the film follows with the most
  845. 40:54wonderful music and everybody of every
  846. 40:56complexion size and shape worldwide is
  847. 40:58drinking Coke Eskimos Zulus the whole
  848. 41:01world is on a kind of kick it's a kind
  849. 41:05of embodiment of the spirit of coke the
  850. 41:09whole notion of things go better with
  851. 41:12the whole notion of brain tonic the
  852. 41:15whole notion of refreshment of good
  853. 41:17Fellowship bonami people all when
  854. 41:20they're together they're happy and when
  855. 41:21they're happy they drink Coke and when
  856. 41:23they drink Coke they're happy and
  857. 41:24they're together so that the messages
  858. 41:26are intertwined in this wonderfully
  859. 41:29convincing way and this Temple this
  860. 41:33synagogue this church of consumption is
  861. 41:37analogous to the holy medicine bundles
  862. 41:40of the American Indians who a used uh
  863. 41:44objects sacred objects which they held
  864. 41:47together in a little packet as the kind
  865. 41:49of central um thematic expression of
  866. 41:54their identity as a people in some ways
  867. 41:57the Coke Museum is like a medicine
  868. 42:00[Music]
  869. 42:11bundle in candler's time sales meetings
  870. 42:14are closed with Onward Christian
  871. 42:16Soldiers then the missionaries hit the
  872. 42:24road still today for some at least C is
  873. 42:27a matter of faith I
  874. 42:33all
  875. 42:35I the Angels crying the
  876. 42:40world
  877. 42:44world that's a good song I made that
  878. 42:47song
  879. 42:50up as a symbol for his religion Christ
  880. 42:54chose the wheat seed the Reverend Howard
  881. 42:57chooses a symbol that is equally
  882. 42:59recognizable
  883. 43:01today when Christ made a parable of the
  884. 43:04wheat seed why did he do it because
  885. 43:07everybody knew what a wheat seed was and
  886. 43:10that's the way it is about the Cocola
  887. 43:14bottle when they see that Coca-Cola
  888. 43:16bottle they go to it and they may be
  889. 43:19Christians and they may not be
  890. 43:20Christians they may be foreigners they
  891. 43:22may be infidels whoever they are they go
  892. 43:24to that bottle and know what it is and
  893. 43:26they'll read maybe some of my little
  894. 43:28slogans and things I have a slogan where
  895. 43:31it says past time never returns and
  896. 43:35future time uh is only a hope and the
  897. 43:39present time is all you got and I'm
  898. 43:41getting thousands of quotations out that
  899. 43:45people's never heard in order to
  900. 43:47influence them to the saving of their
  901. 43:52soul cap up there at uh there's a
  902. 43:56heavenly as high as you can go and the
  903. 43:59bottom says down there that's as low as
  904. 44:02you can go so between as low as you can
  905. 44:05go and high as you can go Cocola comes
  906. 44:07right in there from the time you're born
  907. 44:09and it's with you when you die

  911. 44:55over a century ago a Isa Candler took a
  912. 44:57unique formula and a flare for image
  913. 45:00making and made them into something akin
  914. 45:02to a
  915. 45:05religion kendler originally bought
  916. 45:07Coca-Cola for
  917. 45:08$2,300 by 1917 the company is worth 25
  918. 45:15million kendler has always seen kooch as
  919. 45:18a family trust but he's 65 and
  920. 45:21tired he decides to give the company to
  921. 45:24his children
  922. 45:26[Music]
  923. 45:31nothing nothing else gives you the
  924. 45:33bracing Sparkle and the bright little
  925. 45:35lift that's so delightfully yours in ice
  926. 45:37cold Coca-Cola Coke has a distinctive
  927. 45:40flavor all its own that no one has ever
  928. 45:42succeeded in matching no actually got
  929. 45:45the story from his granddaughter Laura
  930. 45:47canler Chambers who you have to
  931. 45:49understand I'm going to give you her
  932. 45:50version of it when I interviewed her she
  933. 45:52said please understand I was a little
  934. 45:53girl she was so seven maybe um
  935. 45:57they would have Christmas every year of
  936. 45:59course at our grandfather's there would
  937. 46:01be the big uh gift exchange they started
  938. 46:04handing out these envelopes and my
  939. 46:06parents got an envelope and all my aunts
  940. 46:08and uncles got an envelope and what
  941. 46:10worried Aunt Laura was she was afraid
  942. 46:12she was going to get an envelope and
  943. 46:13what she really wanted was a present to
  944. 46:15unwrap hopefully a doll to play with
  945. 46:17which she ended up getting but in those
  946. 46:19envelopes wor the shares the Cocola
  947. 46:21company after he had given his children
  948. 46:23the majority of the stock they sold the
  949. 46:26company
  950. 46:27without telling their father and it damn
  951. 46:30near killed him he just hated it not
  952. 46:34only that they had sold it to a
  953. 46:36Syndicate of Bankers headed by Ernest
  954. 46:39Woodruff and Asa Candler hated Ernest
  955. 46:42Woodruff as did almost everybody in
  956. 46:44Atlanta he was known as a very powerful
  957. 46:46very stingy businessman he was of course
  958. 46:49really hurt he had given this to them
  959. 46:51thinking well it's you know it's a cash
  960. 46:54cow the money will always roll in it's
  961. 46:56wonderful product if you just manage it
  962. 46:57right it will be fine however they
  963. 47:00couldn't manage it because they couldn't
  964. 47:01get
  965. 47:02[Music]
  966. 47:04along at Christmas time in
  967. 47:071924 Candler finds himself alone at the
  968. 47:10builtmore hotel in New York
  969. 47:15City he writes to his son I never go out
  970. 47:20I am terribly
  971. 47:22lonely once I was countered as one of
  972. 47:25the movers and shakers of Atlanta
  973. 47:27and my children looked up to
  974. 47:30me now I'm a nobody
  975. 47:35[Music]
  976. 47:58when people did in fact have a notion of
  977. 48:01a deity their identity was shaped in a
  978. 48:04certain important Way by relation to
  979. 48:07that
  980. 48:14deity to the extent that that feeling
  981. 48:17has been replaced by the notion that you
  982. 48:19can build yourself over into what you
  983. 48:22want to be by consuming to that extent
  984. 48:25consumption has replaced an old older
  985. 48:28ideology if I drive a mercedesbenz wear
  986. 48:31a Rolex watch take my vacations in San
  987. 48:34maritz and otherwise demonstrate to the
  988. 48:37world the kind of person I am the kind
  989. 48:40of person I am is the kind that consumes
  990. 48:42in that way it says nothing about my
  991. 48:44character it says nothing about my
  992. 48:46relationships to other people but I have
  993. 48:48an identity that's been built up by
  994. 48:50companies and yeah that's where
  995. 48:52consumerism takes us and it is in this
  996. 48:54sense a new religion
