- 0:00Orse, his dad broke both his legs and
- 0:02left him on the streets. Then a 140
- 0:05Hells Angel found him. The rain came
- 0:08down hard on the dark industrial road.
- 0:11Moose rode at the back of the pack like
- 0:14always. Somebody had to watch the tail
- 0:16end. That was his job. He was tired.
- 0:20It had been a long charity run for the
- 0:23children's hospital. All day in the wind
- 0:25with the sun in his eyes.
- 0:27Now the night had turned cold and wet.
- 0:31The road ran between warehouses and
- 0:33empty lots and there were no
- 0:35streetlights for a mile.
- 0:37Rain hit his face and ran off his beard.
- 0:40His boots were full of water.
- 0:43Up ahead, the tail lights of his
- 0:45brothers glowed red. 14 bikes, one long
- 0:49line.
- 0:51Pike rode closest, easy with one hand,
- 0:54humming something that the wind stole
- 0:56away.
- 0:57That was when Moose saw it. A shape on
- 1:00the shoulder of the road. Small.
- 1:04Dark against the wet gray pavement.
- 1:07He thought maybe it was a trash bag that
- 1:08had blown loose.
- 1:10Then the shape moved.
- 1:13He slowed.
- 1:14His heart started to pound.
- 1:17He pulled over, kicked down his stand,
- 1:19and walked back.
- 1:21It was a boy.
- 1:23Moose's breath caught in his chest. The
- 1:25kid lay on his side in a puddle, soaked
- 1:28to the bone.
- 1:29No coat.
- 1:31Thin pants cut off at the knees. Both
- 1:33legs were wrapped in white casts. The
- 1:36casts were gray with rain now and
- 1:38cracked at the edges.
- 1:40One of his arms was bent wrong. His face
- 1:43was bruised purple on one side.
- 1:47Before you continue listening,
- 1:49please let me know where in the world
- 1:51are you watching from today. Also, if
- 1:53you can subscribe to our channel, that'd
- 1:55give us the motivation we need to
- 1:57produce more videos like this.
- 2:00Now, back to the story. Moose dropped to
- 2:03his knees in the water.
- 2:05Hey. Hey, buddy.
- 2:07He touched the boy's shoulder, gentle as
- 2:09he could.
- 2:10You hear me? Can you open your eyes?
- 2:14The boy's eyes fluttered.
- 2:16A little sound came out of him.
- 2:19Not a word.
- 2:20Just a hurt sound.
- 2:23Moose pulled off his leather jacket, the
- 2:25one with the Redwood chapter patch on
- 2:27the back, and wrapped the kid in it.
- 2:31He lifted him careful.
- 2:33The boy weighed nothing.
- 2:35He felt like a bundle of sticks in wet
- 2:37clothes.
- 2:40The rain kept coming.
- 2:42Moose turned his headlight to high beam
- 2:45and raised one arm.
- 2:47In 10 seconds, Pike was there.
- 2:49Brakes squealing, water spraying.
- 2:53Call it in, Moose said. His voice was
- 2:56flat.
- 2:58Get the medic to the clubhouse. Then
- 3:00tell the hospital we're coming.
- 3:02Pike looked down at the bundle in
- 3:04Moose's arms.
- 3:06His face changed.
- 3:08He didn't ask a single question.
- 3:11He just pulled out his phone and started
- 3:13talking fast.
- 3:16More bikes came back down the road.
- 3:18Engines cut.
- 3:20Men in wet leather gathered round, one
- 3:23after another, silent.
- 3:26Somebody held a flashlight.
- 3:28Somebody else held a jacket over the
- 3:30boy's face to block the rain.
- 3:33The boy's eyes opened all the way for
- 3:35one moment.
- 3:37He looked up at all those hard faces,
- 3:40all that long hair and beard, all those
- 3:43tattoos,
- 3:44and he didn't look scared.
- 3:47He looked like he had been waiting for
- 3:48somebody to show up.
- 3:50Found you.
- 3:52The boy whispered.
- 3:53Moose swallowed hard.
- 3:56Yeah.
- 3:57You did.
- 3:59Then the boy said one more thing, so
- 4:01quiet that Moose had to put his ear near
- 4:03his mouth.
- 4:05"My dad broke my legs and left me.
- 4:08He said the angels would take care of
- 4:09me."
- 4:11Nobody moved. The rain drummed on the
- 4:13pavement.
- 4:15Moose's jaw went tight.
- 4:17His brother saw his face and said
- 4:19nothing at all.
- 4:20Then Pike said,
- 4:22calm and low,
- 4:24"Van's coming. 4 minutes."
- 4:27Moose carried the boy to the van and
- 4:29held him the whole ride.
- 4:32The boy shivered against his chest.
- 4:35Moose talked the whole time about
- 4:37nothing, about the rain, about his old
- 4:39dog, keeping him here, keeping him
- 4:42awake.
- 4:44At the hospital, the lights were so
- 4:46bright.
- 4:48Nurse Alma met them at the door with a
- 4:49rolling bed and a warm voice and kind
- 4:52hands.
- 4:54Moose walked beside the boy until they
- 4:56pushed him through a door and told Moose
- 4:59to wait.
- 5:01He waited.
- 5:02He stood in the hallway with wet hair
- 5:04and wet boots and no jacket on his back.
- 5:08And he did not sit down.
- 5:11By midnight, the hallway was full of
- 5:13Hell's Angels.
- 5:1540 of them, then more.
- 5:18They stood along the wall with their
- 5:19arms crossed and said nothing.
- 5:22A security guard started to say
- 5:24something about the number of people.
- 5:27Pike looked at him once. The guard went
- 5:29quiet.
- 5:31Police came.
- 5:33A detective took Moose's statement
- 5:34twice.
- 5:36Moose told it plain.
- 5:38He didn't make himself sound like a
- 5:39hero.
- 5:41He just told what he saw.
- 5:44At 2:00 in the morning, Nurse Alma came
- 5:46out and said the boy was stable.
- 5:48Both legs were broken and the left arm,
- 5:51too.
- 5:52He had a fever.
- 5:54He was asking for the man in the leather
- 5:56jacket.
- 5:57Moose went in.
- 5:59The boy was small in the bed, smaller
- 6:01even than he had been on the road.
- 6:04One arm in a sling,
- 6:06one cheek still purple.
- 6:08The monitors beeped soft and steady.
- 6:11Moose pulled the chair close and sat
- 6:12down.
- 6:14"Hey, buddy," he said.
- 6:16"I'm Moose."
- 6:17The boy blinked at him.
- 6:19"That's a funny name."
- 6:21"Yeah, it is."
- 6:23Moose smiled and something in his chest
- 6:25hurt.
- 6:26"What's your name?"
- 6:28"Leo."
- 6:29"Leo."
- 6:30Moose nodded.
- 6:32"That's a good name.
- 6:33Strong name."
- 6:35Leo looked at the door, then back at
- 6:36Moose.
- 6:38His lip shook.
- 6:39"Is my dad coming back?"
- 6:42Moose thought about the question.
- 6:44He thought about the answer.
- 6:45He didn't lie to kids.
- 6:48"No," he said. "He's not."
- 6:52Leo's eyes filled up and he didn't cry
- 6:55out loud.
- 6:56He just let the tears run.
- 6:59Quiet.
- 7:00Like he had learned to be quiet about
- 7:02it.
- 7:03Moose reached out and took the boy's
- 7:05small hand in his big one.
- 7:07The one with the tattooed knuckles and
- 7:09the cracked skin.
- 7:11"You're not alone anymore, Leo.
- 7:14Not ever again."
- 7:16The rain kept falling.
- 7:18Moose knelt there in the puddle with the
- 7:20boy in his arms and felt the small body
- 7:23shake against his chest.
- 7:26Leo's breath came in little puffs, fast
- 7:29and shallow.
- 7:31His skin was cold as river stone.
- 7:35"Easy now," Moose said. "I got you."
- 7:39Pike's boots splashed up beside him.
- 7:42"Medics on the way to the clubhouse.
- 7:44Ambulance is coming, too. They said 8
- 7:46minutes."
- 7:47"Too long," Moose said. "Nearest
- 7:50hospital's 12."
- 7:52Pike crouched down and shined his light
- 7:55on the boy's legs.
- 7:57The casts were cracked and muddy and the
- 8:00white was stained brown where the rain
- 8:03had soaked through.
- 8:05Pike's mouth went tight.
- 8:08"Those weren't put on right. Look at the
- 8:10edges.
- 8:11Somebody did this at home.
- 8:14Moose didn't answer.
- 8:16He pulled his jacket tighter around Leo,
- 8:19tucking the collar up under his chin.
- 8:21The leather was big enough to swallow
- 8:23the kid whole.
- 8:25Only his face showed, small and pale
- 8:28inside all that black.
- 8:31The boy's eyes opened again,
- 8:33foggy and slow.
- 8:36"Cold," Leo whispered. "I know. I know
- 8:39it."
- 8:40Moose rubbed the boy's back through the
- 8:42jacket.
- 8:43"Bike's got heat when it runs, but I
- 8:45ain't putting you on a bike, so we're
- 8:46going to wait for the van. You just keep
- 8:48talking to me. Can you do that?"
- 8:51Leo's teeth chattered. "About what?"
- 8:55"Anything. You got a favorite color?"
- 8:58"Blue," the boy said after a moment.
- 9:01"Like the bikes."
- 9:03Moose looked up.
- 9:05His brothers had pulled their bikes into
- 9:06a row along the shoulder, engines
- 9:09idling, headlights pointed at the road,
- 9:12so the whole scene sat in a pool of
- 9:14white light.
- 9:16It kept the rain bright and silver.
- 9:19Twenty men stood in the glow with their
- 9:22arms crossed, watching the dark road in
- 9:24both directions.
- 9:27"Yeah," Moose said.
- 9:29"Blue's a good color."
- 9:31"My dad's bike was blue,"
- 9:33Leo said. Moose's hand stopped on the
- 9:35boy's back.
- 9:37"That right?"
- 9:39"He said it was his club bike before."
- 9:42Leo's voice drifted.
- 9:44"He said the Angels took it from him. He
- 9:46hates the Angels."
- 9:48Pike heard it, too.
- 9:50Moose saw his brother's face go still,
- 9:53saw him turn and walk a few steps away,
- 9:56phone already out, thumb moving fast.
- 10:00The van came down the road with its
- 10:01headlights blazing. It stopped, and the
- 10:04side door slid open.
- 10:07Two brothers jumped out with blankets.
- 10:09Moose stood up with Leo in his arms and
- 10:12climbed inside and the door slammed shut
- 10:15behind him.
- 10:16Heat poured from the vents.
- 10:19Somebody had thrown a blanket around
- 10:20Moose's shoulders, too, but he didn't
- 10:22notice.
- 10:23The ride was 12 minutes.
- 10:25Moose counted every bump.
- 10:28Leo lay against his chest and Moose put
- 10:31one big hand over the boy's ear and the
- 10:34other over the back of his head, keeping
- 10:37the jolts gentle.
- 10:39He talked the whole way
- 10:41about his old dog, Bear, who was half
- 10:43wolf and too dumb to learn fetch,
- 10:46about the fish he caught last summer up
- 10:48near the lake, about nothing at all.
- 10:52The hospital doors slid open with a soft
- 10:54hiss
- 10:55and the lights inside were so white that
- 10:58Moose's eyes stung.
- 11:01Nurse Alma came through a door in blue
- 11:03scrubs, her white hair pinned back, her
- 11:07face calm.
- 11:08She took one look at the bundle in
- 11:10Moose's arms and did not waste a single
- 11:13second.
- 11:16"Trauma room two," she said to the men
- 11:18behind her.
- 11:19"Get me warming blankets. Page Dr.
- 11:21Ellis."
- 11:23She turned to Moose.
- 11:25"You the one who found him?"
- 11:27"Yeah."
- 11:28"Bring him."
- 11:29"Walk and talk."
- 11:31Moose followed her down the bright
- 11:32hallway, past the desk, past the closed
- 11:35doors.
- 11:37Leo's head lifted once, eyes half open,
- 11:40and he saw the lights and the ceiling
- 11:42tiles sliding past.
- 11:45"Am I in trouble?" the boy asked.
- 11:48Moose nearly stopped walking.
- 11:50"Trouble? Nobody, no, you're not in
- 11:52trouble."
- 11:54"Dad said if anyone found out I'd be in
- 11:56trouble.
- 11:57He said they'd take me away."
- 12:00Nurse Alma's step did not slow, but her
- 12:03jaw moved once, tight.
- 12:06She held open a door.
- 12:08"Here we are,"
- 12:09she said, warm as could be.
- 12:12"Nice warm room and some nice warm
- 12:14blankets. You're doing so good,
- 12:15sweetheart.
- 12:17Real good.
- 12:19They laid Leo down on the bed
- 12:21and Moose made himself step back.
- 12:25Nurses moved in, gentle but quick,
- 12:28cutting the wet clothes away, checking
- 12:31the casts, murmuring numbers to each
- 12:33other.
- 12:35One of them stopped and looked at the
- 12:37boy's ribs.
- 12:39She said nothing.
- 12:41She pulled the blanket up a little
- 12:43higher.
- 12:45Moose stood at the foot of the bed with
- 12:47his wet hair dripping onto the floor and
- 12:51his knuckles white on the rail.
- 12:54"Where's my dad?" Leo asked.
- 12:57Moose looked at the boy's face, then up
- 12:59at Nurse Alma.
- 13:01She met his eyes and gave a slow, small
- 13:05nod.
- 13:06She had heard enough already to
- 13:07understand.
- 13:09"Your dad's not here," Moose said. "He's
- 13:12not coming." Leo stared at him.
- 13:15Then he turned his face into the pillow
- 13:17and his shoulders started to shake
- 13:19without any sound at all.
- 13:22Moose moved to the head of the bed and
- 13:24put his hand on the boy's back.
- 13:28"You're going to be all right. You hear
- 13:30me?
- 13:31I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere."
- 13:34A detective in a gray coat stepped into
- 13:36the doorway.
- 13:37Moose saw him and saw Nurse Alma see
- 13:40him, too.
- 13:42She lifted one finger, meaning wait.
- 13:45The detective nodded and stepped back
- 13:47out of sight.
- 13:48Moose bent down close to Leo's ear.
- 13:52"You rest now.
- 13:53When you wake up, I'll still be here.
- 13:55That's a promise."
- 13:57Leo's hand found Moose's sleeve and held
- 14:00on.
- 14:01Later, in the hallway, the detective
- 14:04asked his questions.
- 14:06Moose answered every one, straight and
- 14:09plain,
- 14:10watching the rain slide down the glass
- 14:12doors at the end of the hall.
- 14:15They said Leo was stable.
- 14:19They said the legs would heal,
- 14:21but it would take months.
- 14:23They said someone did this on purpose.
- 14:28Moose turned and looked toward the
- 14:29hospital doors, where the dark and the
- 14:32rain were waiting.
- 14:34His voice came out low and hard and
- 14:36certain.
- 14:38Then we find out who did this to you,
- 14:39son.
- 14:42The hallway outside Leo's room filled up
- 14:44slowly at first,
- 14:46then all at once.
- 14:48Pike came first, still in his wet vest,
- 14:51his hair plastered to his forehead.
- 14:54Behind him came Bear, who was 6'4" and
- 14:57built like a refrigerator,
- 14:59and Tiny, who was not tiny at all.
- 15:03Then came the rest.
- 15:05They came in twos and threes through the
- 15:07sliding doors, boots squeaking on the
- 15:10clean tile, leather dark with rain.
- 15:14A nurse at the desk opened her mouth to
- 15:16say something about visiting hours,
- 15:19and then closed it again.
- 15:21Nobody made a sound.
- 15:23That was the strange part.
- 15:2620 men stood in that bright hallway,
- 15:29shoulder to shoulder,
- 15:30and they did not talk.
- 15:33Some of them folded their big hands in
- 15:35front of them.
- 15:36Some leaned against the wall with their
- 15:38eyes closed.
- 15:40Pike pulled a small worn rosary out of
- 15:43his pocket, and ran the beads through
- 15:45his fingers,
- 15:47his lips moving without any sound.
- 15:51Bear just stood there, with his arms
- 15:53crossed,
- 15:54watching the door to Leo's room like a
- 15:56guard at a gate.
- 15:59A doctor walked past and did a double
- 16:01take. He kept walking.
- 16:04Nurse Alma came out of the room with a
- 16:06clipboard, and stopped short at the
- 16:08sight of them.
- 16:10She looked down the line of leather and
- 16:12beards and hard faces,
- 16:14and she did not flinch.
- 16:17"Family only past this point," she said.
- 16:20Pike looked up from his beads.
- 16:23"We're his family."
- 16:26"He's got no family on record," she
- 16:27said. "Not yet."
- 16:30"He's got us," Pike said. "And I'd say
- 16:32that counts for something tonight."
- 16:35Nurse Alma studied him for a long
- 16:37moment.
- 16:38Then she looked at the rest of them, at
- 16:40the way they stood so quiet and so
- 16:42still.
- 16:44The way not one of them had raised his
- 16:46voice or pushed past her.
- 16:49She let out a breath.
- 16:52"Keep it down," she said. "And don't
- 16:55block the hallway. I've got sick kids on
- 16:57this floor."
- 17:00They shuffled back against the wall,
- 17:02making room.
- 17:04Bear moved a chair out of the walkway
- 17:06without being asked.
- 17:08Tiny took off his dripping jacket and
- 17:10folded it over his arm so it would not
- 17:12drip on the floor.
- 17:15Moose came out of Leo's room about an
- 17:17hour later.
- 17:18His face was gray.
- 17:20He looked down the hallway at his
- 17:21brothers and stopped walking.
- 17:24"You didn't have to stay," he said.
- 17:27"Didn't we?"
- 17:28Pike said. Moose rubbed his face with
- 17:31both hands.
- 17:33"He's asleep.
- 17:34They gave him something for the pain.
- 17:36They said his legs
- 17:38He stopped, swallowed.
- 17:41They said it was done on purpose.
- 17:43Somebody broke them.
- 17:44Then put them in casts like he was
- 17:46patching a fence."
- 17:48The hallway went very quiet.
- 17:50Bear's jaw worked.
- 17:52Tiny looked down at his boots.
- 17:56"Kid seven years old," Moose said. His
- 17:59voice cracked in the middle of the word
- 18:01"seven". He cleared his throat hard.
- 18:04"Seven."
- 18:06Pike put the rosary back in his pocket
- 18:08and stepped closer.
- 18:09"We're going to find him, Moose. Whoever
- 18:11did this, we're going to find him and
- 18:13we're going to hand him to the police
- 18:15wrapped up neat. That's what we do. We
- 18:18don't do the other thing. Not anymore.
- 18:20Not for this.
- 18:23Moose looked at him.
- 18:24Something passed between them.
- 18:27Some old understanding.
- 18:30I know. Moose said.
- 18:33The detective came back down the hall
- 18:35with a notebook and a tired face.
- 18:37He stopped in front of Moose and looked
- 18:39past him at the line of Hells Angels.
- 18:42And something in his expression shifted.
- 18:45Not fear.
- 18:47Something more like respect.
- 18:51You're the one who found him.
- 18:52The detective said.
- 18:54Yeah.
- 18:56I need to ask you a few more things.
- 18:59He flipped his notebook open.
- 19:02The boy's been talking a little.
- 19:04He said the man who did this told him
- 19:06something. He said, and I'm quoting
- 19:08here,
- 19:09"The angels would take care of him."
- 19:12Moose went still.
- 19:14The detective kept reading.
- 19:17"The boy says his dad left him on that
- 19:18road on purpose.
- 19:20Said the angels would come along and
- 19:21take care of him."
- 19:23He looked up.
- 19:25Any idea what that means?
- 19:27Every man in that hallway was listening
- 19:30now.
- 19:31Moose could feel them listening. He
- 19:33could feel the weight of 20 pairs of
- 19:35eyes on the back of his neck.
- 19:39Means somebody knew our route. Moose
- 19:41said slowly.
- 19:42Means somebody knew we'd be coming back
- 19:44that way after the charity run.
- 19:47Means somebody wanted us to find that
- 19:49boy. Pike said from behind him.
- 19:52The detective wrote something down.
- 19:55You have enemies? Anybody who'd want to
- 19:57hurt you like this?
- 19:59Moose turned and looked at his brothers.
- 20:02They looked back at him.
- 20:04Somewhere in the back of his mind a name
- 20:06was already starting to form.
- 20:09But he did not say it.
- 20:11Not yet.
- 20:12Not out loud.
- 20:15I've got a few ideas.
- 20:17Moose said.
- 20:18I'll bring you a list in the morning.
- 20:21The detective nodded and walked away.
- 20:24His footsteps soft on the tile.
- 20:27The rain had stopped outside.
- 20:30The glass doors at the end of the hall
- 20:32showed only wet black street
- 20:34and the orange blur of the parking lot
- 20:37lights.
- 20:39Moose walked back to Leo's door and
- 20:41looked through the little window.
- 20:44The boy was asleep, small in the big
- 20:47bed, one arm flung out across the
- 20:49blanket.
- 20:51His face was turned up toward the
- 20:52ceiling, calm now, his breathing slow
- 20:56and even.
- 20:58Somebody had tucked his little bag of
- 21:00things on the chair beside the bed,
- 21:02his crayons, his drawings.
- 21:06Moose stood there
- 21:08and watched him for a long moment.
- 21:11Then he turned around to face his
- 21:13brothers.
- 21:15He thought about Deek.
- 21:17Thought about a man who got kicked out
- 21:19of the club years back for stealing from
- 21:21the toy fund, the money that bought
- 21:24Christmas presents for kids whose
- 21:25families couldn't afford them.
- 21:28Thought about a man who would break a
- 21:30little boy's legs and leave him on a
- 21:32cold road just to send a message.
- 21:36Moose's hands curled into fists at his
- 21:38sides.
- 21:40"Whoever says the angels would take care
- 21:42of him,"
- 21:43Moose muttered, low and rough, "that man
- 21:46already knows what we are. He knows we
- 21:48won't walk past a hurt child. He used
- 21:51that. He used our code against us."
- 21:55Pike came and stood beside him.
- 21:58"Then we use it right back.
- 22:00Except we do it the right way."
- 22:02Moose nodded slowly.
- 22:04He looked at the boy through the glass
- 22:06one more time.
- 22:09"Yeah," he said.
- 22:11"We do it the right way."
- 22:13Morning came slow through the hospital
- 22:15window.
- 22:17Gray light, then gold.
- 22:19It spread across the floor in a long
- 22:21quiet stripe and touched the edge of
- 22:24Leo's blanket.
- 22:26Moose had not moved from the chair.
- 22:29His back ached. His vest hung over the
- 22:31armrest and his coffee had gone cold
- 22:34hours ago.
- 22:35He didn't care.
- 22:37He sat with his elbows on his knees and
- 22:39watched the boy breathe.
- 22:42The machines beeped soft and steady.
- 22:45A cart rolled past in the hallway.
- 22:48Somewhere a door clicked shut.
- 22:51Leo's eyes opened.
- 22:53He didn't move at first.
- 22:55He just looked up at the ceiling,
- 22:57blinking, like he was trying to remember
- 22:59where he was.
- 23:01Then his head turned on the pillow.
- 23:04He saw Moose.
- 23:06His whole face changed.
- 23:08Not scared.
- 23:09Relieved.
- 23:11"Hey, buddy." Moose said. His voice came
- 23:14out rough from no sleep. He cleared it.
- 23:17"You're okay. You're in the hospital.
- 23:19You're safe."
- 23:21Leo's lips moved, but no sound came.
- 23:24Moose leaned closer.
- 23:26"What's that?"
- 23:27Leo tried again. His voice was a thin
- 23:29little thread.
- 23:31"You stayed."
- 23:32"I did."
- 23:34"You're still here?"
- 23:35"I'm still here." Moose said. "I'm not
- 23:38going anywhere."
- 23:39Leo's eyes filled up. He didn't cry out
- 23:42loud.
- 23:43The tears just ran sideways into his
- 23:45hair and the pillow.
- 23:48His small hands picked at the blanket.
- 23:51Moose didn't know what to do with his
- 23:53own hands.
- 23:54He wasn't good at this.
- 23:56He could fix a motorcycle blindfolded.
- 23:59He could calm a room of angry men with
- 24:01one look. But a crying kid?
- 24:04That scared him more than anything.
- 24:07"Hey.
- 24:08Hey now." he said soft.
- 24:11"It's all right. You're all right."
- 24:13"My legs hurt." Leo whispered.
- 24:16"I know. The doctors gave you something.
- 24:19It'll help."
- 24:21Leo looked down at the white casts.
- 24:24They stuck out from the blanket, both
- 24:25legs heavy and stiff.
- 24:28He stared at them a long time.
- 24:31Then he looked back at Moose
- 24:33and his face did something that made
- 24:34Moose's chest go tight.
- 24:37"My dad did that." Leo said. Moose went
- 24:40very still.
- 24:42"What?"
- 24:44"He broke them."
- 24:45Leo's voice was calm in a way that was
- 24:47worse than crying.
- 24:49He was mad.
- 24:50"He said I was bad.
- 24:52He said I had to learn."
- 24:54Moose could not speak.
- 24:56His jaw felt locked.
- 24:58He forced himself to breathe, slow, in
- 25:01through his nose.
- 25:03"He put the casts on after." Leo said.
- 25:06"It hurt so bad. I screamed and he told
- 25:09me to stop, then he put me in the
- 25:10truck."
- 25:12Moose's hands were shaking. He pressed
- 25:14them flat on his knees.
- 25:17"In the truck." he said.
- 25:19"Keep it steady." he told himself. "Keep
- 25:21it steady for the boy."
- 25:24He drove a long time.
- 25:26It was dark and rainy.
- 25:27"He kept saying stuff."
- 25:30Leo paused. His little forehead wrinkled
- 25:33like he was trying hard to remember the
- 25:35exact words.
- 25:37"He said the angels would take care of
- 25:39me. He said it over and over like he was
- 25:42happy about it."
- 25:44Moose felt a cold fist close around his
- 25:46heart.
- 25:48"Then he put me on the road." Leo said.
- 25:50"He set me down on the ground and he got
- 25:52back in the truck
- 25:54and he left." The words hung in the
- 25:56bright room.
- 25:58Moose sat there
- 26:00and could not think of a single thing to
- 26:02say.
- 26:04He had been in a hundred fights. He had
- 26:06seen terrible things in his life.
- 26:09But nothing had ever hit him like that
- 26:11calm little voice telling him the story
- 26:14like it was a math problem.
- 26:17"Why did he leave me?"
- 26:19Leo whispered.
- 26:21The question was so small,
- 26:22so honest.
- 26:25Moose reached out and took the boy's
- 26:26tiny hand in his big rough one.
- 26:29He was careful.
- 26:31So careful.
- 26:33"Listen to me." Moose said.
- 26:35"That was wrong.
- 26:37What he did was wrong.
- 26:38It wasn't your fault, not one bit. You
- 26:40hear me?"
- 26:42Leo nodded slow.
- 26:44"You're not bad." Moose said. "You're a
- 26:46good boy. A brave boy. And you being
- 26:49here right now, that's not luck. That's
- 26:51you being strong."
- 26:53Leo's chin quivered.
- 26:55"Is he coming back?"
- 26:57"No." Moose said.
- 26:59And he said it hard and true.
- 27:01"No, he's not.
- 27:03I'll make sure of that. The police are
- 27:05looking for him right now. He's not
- 27:07going to hurt you ever again."
- 27:09Leo's grip tightened on Moose's fingers.
- 27:12He held on like a kid in deep water.
- 27:15"Promise?"
- 27:17he whispered.
- 27:18"I promise." Moose said. "On my patch.
- 27:21On my brothers. On everything I've got."
- 27:25Somehow his voice didn't break.
- 27:28Leo's eyes drifted shut.
- 27:30The medicine was pulling him back down.
- 27:33His breathing went slow and even.
- 27:35And his hand stayed curled around
- 27:37Moose's.
- 27:39And Moose did not let go.
- 27:42He sat like that for a long time.
- 27:44The sun climbed higher.
- 27:47The stripe of light moved up the wall
- 27:49and across the blanket.
- 27:51Then the door opened behind him.
- 27:54Soft footsteps on the tile.
- 27:57Moose turned his head.
- 28:00Nurse Alma stood in the doorway,
- 28:02clipboard against her chest, her face
- 28:04kind and tired all at once.
- 28:08She looked at Moose sitting there with
- 28:10his hand in the boy's hand.
- 28:12She looked at Leo's calm face, the sun
- 28:15on the blanket, the cold coffee
- 28:17untouched on the floor.
- 28:20She smiled a little.
- 28:22Just a little.
- 28:25"You can see him now, sir."
- 28:26she said.
- 28:28The two detectives came at 10:00.
- 28:31Moose saw them coming down the hall in
- 28:33plain clothes with badges on their
- 28:35belts, and he stood up from the chair
- 28:37outside Leo's room.
- 28:40You the one who found him? The older one
- 28:42asked.
- 28:44He held up a card.
- 28:46Detective Grant. This is my partner,
- 28:48Detective Ruiz.
- 28:50Yes, Moose said. That's me.
- 28:53We need to talk to the boy. Just a few
- 28:55questions. Nothing that will scare him.
- 28:59Moose looked through the window.
- 29:01Leo was awake, sitting up against the
- 29:03pillows with a cup of apple juice in
- 29:05both hands.
- 29:07He's seven, Moose said. He's been
- 29:10through enough. You go easy on him.
- 29:14Always do, Grant said.
- 29:17Moose stepped aside, but he did not
- 29:19leave.
- 29:20He stood by the door with his arms
- 29:22crossed and watched through the little
- 29:24glass window.
- 29:25He could see everything.
- 29:28Detective Grant pulled a chair close to
- 29:30the bed.
- 29:32He sat down low so he was not looming
- 29:34over the boy.
- 29:36Ruiz stayed by the wall with a small
- 29:38notepad.
- 29:40Hey there, Leo. Grant said. I'm
- 29:43Detective Grant. That's my partner,
- 29:45Detective Ruiz. We just want to ask you
- 29:47a couple of things. Is that all right?
- 29:51Leo nodded, small.
- 29:54You don't have to answer anything you
- 29:55don't want to, Ruiz said. And your
- 29:58friend out there in the hallway can come
- 29:59in anytime you want.
- 30:02Leo looked towards the door.
- 30:04Moose gave him a thumbs-up through the
- 30:06glass.
- 30:07Leo's shoulders came down a little.
- 30:11Okay, Leo said.
- 30:13Grant started easy.
- 30:15He asked about the truck.
- 30:18What color was it?
- 30:19What did it smell like inside?
- 30:21Did the man say anything else?
- 30:24Leo answered in his thin voice. And the
- 30:27woman wrote everything down.
- 30:30Then Grant asked a different kind of
- 30:32question.
- 30:34Leo, does the man have a name?
- 30:36A first name or a nickname?
- 30:39Leo thought hard.
- 30:41His little face scrunched up.
- 30:44"Dad," he said at last, "I call him
- 30:46Dad."
- 30:47"But that's not his name."
- 30:49"His name is Deek."
- 30:51Moose heard it through the door.
- 30:53Something inside him went hard as a
- 30:55stone.
- 30:56Grant's pen stopped moving.
- 30:59"You sure about that, buddy?"
- 31:01"Deek?"
- 31:02"Uh-huh."
- 31:03"My mom used to say it." "She would say,
- 31:05'Deek, come eat.'"
- 31:08Leo's eyes got far away for a second.
- 31:11"She's not here. I don't know where she
- 31:12is."
- 31:14"Do you know her name?" Ruiz asked,
- 31:16gentle.
- 31:17"Mom," Leo said.
- 31:20The room went quiet.
- 31:22Grant nodded slowly and stood up.
- 31:24"You did real good, Leo." "Real good."
- 31:27"You rest now, okay?"
- 31:30Moose stepped back as the door opened.
- 31:33Grant came out and pulled it shut behind
- 31:35him.
- 31:36He looked at Moose with a face that had
- 31:37seen plenty and still did not like what
- 31:41it was seeing.
- 31:43"Deek," Grant said.
- 31:45"That name mean anything to you?"
- 31:48Moose felt his jaw tighten.
- 31:50He did not want to say it.
- 31:52But he did.
- 31:54"Yeah," he said.
- 31:56"It means something."
- 31:58"Then help me out."
- 32:00Moose rubbed the back of his neck.
- 32:02"Deek was a prospect years back. Six or
- 32:05seven years, maybe more. We gave him a
- 32:08chance because he had good hands and he
- 32:10could ride."
- 32:12Moose's voice dropped low.
- 32:15"He didn't last." "He stole from the toy
- 32:17fund. That's the club's charity, you
- 32:19understand?" "We do a run every year. We
- 32:22buy bikes and toys for kids at the
- 32:24children's home."
- 32:25"He took cash out of the box." "Money
- 32:28that was meant for those kids."
- 32:30Grant's eyes narrowed.
- 32:32"And the club found out."
- 32:34"We found out. We sat him down and we
- 32:36cut him loose." "Took his patch, took
- 32:39his colors, told him to keep his face
- 32:41away from us.
- 32:43Moose shook his head.
- 32:45He didn't go quiet. He said things, ugly
- 32:48things. Said we'd pay for it someday.
- 32:51You remember what he said?
- 32:53Not every word. I didn't take him
- 32:55serious.
- 32:57Moose's voice went rough.
- 33:00That's on me.
- 33:02Grant wrote something in a small
- 33:04notebook.
- 33:06And you think he knew your route? The
- 33:08road where he left the boy?
- 33:11He knew it, Moose said. He knew it
- 33:13because he used to ride it with us.
- 33:15He knew the Wednesday night run comes
- 33:17down that road after the highway.
- 33:19He picked that spot on purpose.
- 33:22Pike came around the corner then, boots
- 33:24loud on the tile, his face set.
- 33:28He stopped beside Moose and looked from
- 33:29him to the detectives.
- 33:32What did I miss? Pike said.
- 33:35A name, Moose said. Pike's eyes went
- 33:38hard.
- 33:39Deek.
- 33:41You knew too, Grant said.
- 33:44Everybody in the club knew Deek, Pike
- 33:46said.
- 33:47He's not exactly a secret. Grant closed
- 33:50his notebook.
- 33:51All right, we got an old address for a
- 33:53Deek Morley. It's a trailer park out
- 33:55past the cannery. We'll send a car.
- 33:59How long?
- 34:00Moose asked.
- 34:01Could be an hour, could be three.
- 34:04Depends on traffic and depends on who's
- 34:05home.
- 34:07Moose looked at the door where Leo was
- 34:09resting.
- 34:10He thought about a small boy on wet
- 34:12pavement saying that name over and over.
- 34:16He thought about a toy fund, a grudge,
- 34:18and a plan.
- 34:20He lifted his wrist.
- 34:22The old watch ticked quiet against his
- 34:24skin.
- 34:26He read the time.
- 34:29Then we ride down there right now, Moose
- 34:32said.
- 34:34The rain had stopped by 2:00 in the
- 34:35afternoon.
- 34:37The sky stayed gray and the puddles in
- 34:39the clubhouse lot held the color of old
- 34:42pennies.
- 34:43Moose sat on his bike with the engine
- 34:46warm under him.
- 34:47Pike pulled up beside him.
- 34:50Three more brothers came out of the
- 34:51clubhouse and mounted up without a word.
- 34:54Their engines rolled low and steady.
- 34:58"Police said they'd send a car." Pike
- 35:00said.
- 35:02"They can meet us there." Moose said.
- 35:06They rode out in a tight line.
- 35:08The wind pushed at Moose's jacket.
- 35:11He kept his eyes on the road and his
- 35:13mind on Leo's small face in that
- 35:15hospital bed.
- 35:17The boy had said the name Deek like it
- 35:19was a bad taste. Moose wanted answers.
- 35:23He wanted them now.
- 35:25The auto yard sat past the cannery down
- 35:28a road that turned to gravel and then to
- 35:30mud.
- 35:31A chain-link fence ran around the whole
- 35:33lot.
- 35:35Behind it crushed cars were stacked
- 35:37three high.
- 35:39A crane sat still in the wet air. Oil
- 35:41stained the ground in dark patches.
- 35:44An office trailer leaned by the gate
- 35:46with a sign that said no name at all.
- 35:50Moose cut his engine.
- 35:52The brothers did the same.
- 35:55The quiet came in fast.
- 35:57A dog barked somewhere behind the
- 35:59stacks.
- 36:01Then a man came out of the office
- 36:02trailer.
- 36:04He was thin and nervous with a rag in
- 36:06his hands and grease on his wrists.
- 36:09He looked at the leather and the bikes
- 36:11and the six men standing in the mud.
- 36:14And he stopped walking.
- 36:17"We're looking for Deek." Moose said.
- 36:20The man wiped his hands on the rag.
- 36:23"He ain't here."
- 36:25Pike stepped forward.
- 36:27"We didn't ask if he was here." "We
- 36:29asked where he is."
- 36:32The man looked towards the back of the
- 36:34lot.
- 36:35His eyes did the talking before his
- 36:37mouth did.
- 36:38Moose followed the look.
- 36:41A blue pickup truck sat behind a row of
- 36:43dead cars, half hidden, its tailgate
- 36:46facing the fence.
- 36:49The driver's door was open. A pair of
- 36:51boots hung out. Moose walked that way.
- 36:54His boots sucked at the mud.
- 36:57Pike came with him. The other brothers
- 36:59spread out without being told.
- 37:02They did not run.
- 37:03They did not shout. They just moved
- 37:06until the truck had no way out.
- 37:09Deek sat behind the wheel with one leg
- 37:11out the door.
- 37:13He was in his 40s with a weak chin and
- 37:16hard little eyes.
- 37:18He had a coffee cup in one hand and a
- 37:19cigarette in the other.
- 37:21He looked at Moose and smiled.
- 37:24It was not a friendly smile.
- 37:27"Well," Deek said,
- 37:29"look what the rain dragged in."
- 37:31Moose stopped 10 ft from the truck.
- 37:34"Get out."
- 37:36"I'm comfortable."
- 37:37"Get out," Moose said again.
- 37:39His voice was quiet.
- 37:41That made it worse.
- 37:43Deek took a slow drink of his coffee.
- 37:46He looked past Moose at Pike, then at
- 37:48the other brothers.
- 37:50"You brought the whole crew
- 37:52for me?
- 37:53I'm flattered."
- 37:55Pike's jaw worked.
- 37:57"You left a boy on the road."
- 38:00Deek's smile did not move.
- 38:03"I left him where you'd find him.
- 38:05You found him, didn't you? That's your
- 38:07code.
- 38:08You see something broken, you pick it
- 38:10up."
- 38:11Moose felt his hands curl. He made them
- 38:14open again.
- 38:15"His legs are broken, both of them."
- 38:18"He fell," Deek said.
- 38:21"He fell,"
- 38:22Moose repeated.
- 38:24"That what you tell yourself?"
- 38:26Deek's eyes went flat.
- 38:29"He wouldn't shut up. Crying all night.
- 38:31Crying about his mother. I told him to
- 38:33stop."
- 38:34He tapped his cigarette ash onto the
- 38:36ground.
- 38:37"He didn't stop."
- 38:39The words hung in the wet air.
- 38:42Moose heard Pike breathe out slow
- 38:44through his nose.
- 38:46One of the brothers behind them shifted
- 38:48his weight.
- 38:49The dog barked again.
- 38:52You broke his legs because he cried?
- 38:54Moose asked.
- 38:56Deek shrugged one shoulder.
- 38:58He's lucky I didn't do worse. Moose took
- 39:01one step closer.
- 39:03The mud squelched under his boot.
- 39:06Why my route? Why that road?
- 39:10Deek's eyes lit up then, bright and
- 39:13mean.
- 39:14Because you'd have to take him.
- 39:16Because you'd have to look at him and
- 39:18know it came from your own backyard.
- 39:20You cut me loose over a few dollars. You
- 39:22took my colors in front of everybody.
- 39:24You made me nothing.
- 39:27He leaned forward and his voice dropped
- 39:29to a hiss.
- 39:31Now you got a kid with two broken legs
- 39:33and no place to put him. How's that
- 39:35feel?
- 39:37Pike moved fast.
- 39:39But Moose put a hand on his chest.
- 39:42Don't, Moose said. That's what he wants.
- 39:46Pike stopped. His breath came hard. He's
- 39:48not worth it.
- 39:50No, Moose said.
- 39:52He's not.
- 39:54Deek laughed. The sound was dry and
- 39:56ugly. He set his coffee cup on the dash
- 39:59and stepped out of the truck.
- 40:01He stood in the mud with his hands loose
- 40:03at his sides like he had all the time in
- 40:05the world.
- 40:07You want to hit me, old man? Go ahead.
- 40:10I'll have my lawyer here before the
- 40:12bruises show.
- 40:14I'm not going to hit you, Moose said.
- 40:16I'm going to watch the police put you in
- 40:18a car.
- 40:19Police, Deek said.
- 40:22He looked at the gate.
- 40:23You think I'm scared of police?
- 40:26You should be, Pike said.
- 40:28You left a child on a road. You admitted
- 40:30it. We all heard you.
- 40:33Deek's smile came back.
- 40:36Did you?
- 40:37I don't remember saying that.
- 40:39Moose took another step.
- 40:42Why did you keep him from his mother?
- 40:44What did you tell her?
- 40:47Something changed in Deek's face.
- 40:49Just for a second.
- 40:51Then it was gone.
- 40:53"His mother," he said.
- 40:56"She's nothing. She ran off years ago.
- 40:58Left the kid with me."
- 41:00"That's a lie," Moose said.
- 41:02He did not know how he knew it, but he
- 41:04knew it.
- 41:06"What did you tell her?"
- 41:08Deek looked at the brothers, then back
- 41:10at Moose.
- 41:11He leaned against the truck door and
- 41:13crossed his arms.
- 41:15"I told her the kid died," he said.
- 41:18"In an accident. Saved me a lot of
- 41:20trouble."
- 41:22He tilted his head. "She cried.
- 41:25They always cry."
- 41:27Moose felt the ground go steady under
- 41:29him.
- 41:30His heart was pounding, but his mind was
- 41:33clear.
- 41:35"You're going to tell us her name."
- 41:37Deek looked at him for a long moment.
- 41:40Then he smirked from the truck.
- 41:42"The kid's not even mine."
- 41:45The police car came down the gravel road
- 41:47with its lights off.
- 41:49Two officers stepped out and walked
- 41:51through the mud like they had done it a
- 41:52hundred times before.
- 41:55One of them was a broad woman with a
- 41:56calm face.
- 41:58She looked at Deek,
- 42:00then at the open truck door,
- 42:02then at the six men in leather standing
- 42:04in a half circle.
- 42:07"This him?" she asked Moose. "That's
- 42:10him,"
- 42:11Moose said.
- 42:13Deek started talking before she reached
- 42:15him. His voice went high and fast.
- 42:18He said he was being harassed. He said
- 42:21these men came onto his property and
- 42:22threatened him. He said he had rights.
- 42:26The officer listened with her pen still
- 42:28and her eyes steady.
- 42:30When he ran out of words, she said,
- 42:33"Turn around, sir."
- 42:35Deek did not turn around.
- 42:37He looked at Moose instead.
- 42:39His eyes were hard and bright and full
- 42:43of something that might have been hate
- 42:45or might have been fear.
- 42:48"You think this changes anything?" he
- 42:50said. "You think one night in a cell
- 42:52makes you a hero?
- 42:54Moose did not answer.
- 42:56There was nothing worth saying.
- 42:59The officer took Deek by the arm and
- 43:01turned him around herself.
- 43:04The cuffs clicked.
- 43:06Deek's shoulders went tight and his chin
- 43:09came up.
- 43:10But his mouth stayed shut.
- 43:13They walked him past the dead cars and
- 43:15the oil stains and put him in the back
- 43:17of the car.
- 43:19The door shut with a solid sound.
- 43:23The car rolled away and the red lights
- 43:25came on at the gate.
- 43:27And then the yard was quiet again,
- 43:29except for the dog and the rain dripping
- 43:31off the crane.
- 43:33Pike let out a long breath.
- 43:36Well, he said.
- 43:38That happened.
- 43:40Moose looked at the empty truck. The
- 43:42coffee cup was still on the dash.
- 43:45Let's go home, he said.
- 43:48The clubhouse smelled like wet leather
- 43:50and old wood smoke.
- 43:52Someone had turned on all the lamps.
- 43:55The main room glowed warm and gold. A
- 43:58few brothers sat at the long table and
- 44:00said nothing when Moose walked in.
- 44:02They just nodded.
- 44:05That was enough.
- 44:07Leo was in the back room.
- 44:09It had been a storage room once, full of
- 44:11boxes and spare parts.
- 44:14Now it had a cot with clean sheets and a
- 44:16small lamp and a chair beside it.
- 44:19The brothers had moved fast.
- 44:22Moose stood in the doorway and looked at
- 44:24the boy.
- 44:25Leo was awake.
- 44:28His legs, in their white casts, stuck
- 44:31out under a thin blanket.
- 44:33His face was still bruised, but some of
- 44:35the color had come back to his cheeks.
- 44:38He was drawing on a piece of paper with
- 44:40a stub of pencil.
- 44:42He looked up when Moose came in.
- 44:45You came back, Leo said.
- 44:48I said I would.
- 44:50Moose pulled the chair close and sat
- 44:52down.
- 44:53The chair creaked under him.
- 44:56"How are you feeling?"
- 44:58"My legs hurt," Leo said.
- 45:01"But the nurse said that's good.
- 45:03It means they're healing."
- 45:05He held up the paper.
- 45:07It was a drawing of a motorcycle, wobbly
- 45:10and lopsided, with a stick figure on
- 45:13top.
- 45:14"That's you."
- 45:16Moose looked at it for a long moment.
- 45:19His throat felt tight.
- 45:21"That's the best drawing I ever saw."
- 45:24"It's not," Leo said.
- 45:26But he smiled.
- 45:28Someone knocked on the door frame.
- 45:31Pike leaned in with two flat boxes in
- 45:33his hands.
- 45:35"Pizza,"
- 45:36he said.
- 45:37"The guys chipped in. We got pepperoni
- 45:39and plain and a thing with pineapple on
- 45:41it that I personally think is a crime."
- 45:44Leo's eyes went wide.
- 45:46"Pineapple?"
- 45:48"See?" Pike said to Moose.
- 45:51"The kid's got taste."
- 45:53He set the boxes on the cot.
- 45:56The smell filled the little room, warm
- 45:59and salty and good.
- 46:01Leo ate two slices with his hands, and
- 46:04cheese stuck to his chin.
- 46:06He laughed once, quiet, like he was
- 46:08testing the sound.
- 46:10Moose wanted to hear it again.
- 46:13By 8:00, the sky outside was black.
- 46:17The brothers drifted in and out.
- 46:19One brought a blanket.
- 46:21One brought a stuffed bear from the toy
- 46:23box in the corner.
- 46:25Leo named it Sarge and set it on his
- 46:27chest.
- 46:29The room felt like a small, warm pocket
- 46:32in the middle of a big, cold night.
- 46:35Then Ruth came.
- 46:37She knocked first, soft, and stepped in
- 46:40with her bag on her shoulder, and her
- 46:42face set in that careful way she had.
- 46:46Moose stood up.
- 46:48Ruth looked at Leo, then at Moose, and
- 46:51then at the floor.
- 46:53"We need to talk," she said.
- 46:56They stepped into the hallway.
- 46:59Moose pulled the door mostly shut behind
- 47:01them.
- 47:02Through the gap, he could still see
- 47:04Leo's small hands on the bear.
- 47:08The man is in custody, Ruth said.
- 47:11That's good. That's real good. But the
- 47:13law is the law. He's not the boy's
- 47:16father.
- 47:17He gave us a name for the mother, but we
- 47:18haven't located her.
- 47:20And until we do, I have to report to the
- 47:22court.
- 47:24Moose crossed his arms.
- 47:26So what does that mean?
- 47:29Ruth looked up at him.
- 47:31Her eyes were tired, but kind.
- 47:34Without family, he goes to a foster
- 47:36home.
- 47:37The words landed like a stone in still
- 47:39water.
- 47:41Moose opened his mouth, but nothing came
- 47:43out.
- 47:44Behind him, the door creaked.
- 47:46He turned.
- 47:48Leo had pulled himself to the edge of
- 47:49the cot. His face was pale again. He had
- 47:52heard.
- 47:54He held out one hand, small and
- 47:56trembling, and Moose crossed the room in
- 47:58three steps and took it.
- 48:00The boy's grip was surprisingly strong.
- 48:04Don't let them take me.
- 48:06Leo whispered.
- 48:08Moose knelt down so his eyes were level
- 48:10with the boy's.
- 48:12I'm not going anywhere, he said.
- 48:15You hear me? I'm right here.
- 48:17Leo did not let go of his hand.
- 48:21At the door, Ruth stood quiet with her
- 48:23clipboard against her chest.
- 48:25The lamp threw shadows on the wall.
- 48:28The clubhouse had gone silent. And
- 48:30somewhere out in the main room, a chair
- 48:32scraped the floor, and then boots came
- 48:35down the hall, and Pike's voice said low
- 48:38and steady.
- 48:40What's the problem?
- 48:42Moose looked at the open door and the
- 48:44faces gathering behind Ruth.
- 48:4745 years old, and his hand had never
- 48:50held anything so small and so important.
- 48:53He did not let go.
- 48:56The problem, Moose said, is we got a
- 48:58fight ahead of us."
- 49:00The morning came slow and gray.
- 49:03Rain had stopped sometime in the night,
- 49:06and the world outside the clubhouse
- 49:08windows looked washed and new.
- 49:11Puddles sat in the gravel lot like
- 49:13pieces of sky.
- 49:15A few brothers were already up, standing
- 49:18around the coffee pot with their hands
- 49:20wrapped around warm cups, talking low.
- 49:24Moose had not slept much.
- 49:26He had dozed in the chair beside Leo's
- 49:28cot, waking every time the boy shifted
- 49:31or made a small sound.
- 49:33Now he stood in the main room with a cup
- 49:35of coffee going cold in his hand.
- 49:38His back ached. His eyes felt like
- 49:41sandpaper.
- 49:43He did not care.
- 49:45Pike came in from outside, shaking water
- 49:48off his boots.
- 49:50He took one look at Moose and said,
- 49:52"You look like you wrestled a bear and
- 49:54lost."
- 49:56"Feel like it, too." Moose said.
- 49:59Pike poured himself a cup and stood
- 50:01beside him.
- 50:02For a moment neither of them spoke.
- 50:05Then Pike nodded towards the back hall.
- 50:09"Kid still asleep?"
- 50:11"Out cold." "Nurse said he needs the
- 50:13rest."
- 50:15"Good."
- 50:16Pike took a long drink.
- 50:18"So, toys."
- 50:20Moose turned his head.
- 50:22"Toys?"
- 50:23"The room next to his.
- 50:25It's just boxes and old parts. We could
- 50:27clear it out, make it a proper playroom.
- 50:30Somewhere he can move around once those
- 50:31casts come off."
- 50:34Pike shrugged.
- 50:36"The guys already been talking about it.
- 50:38Danny's got a truck. We could hit that
- 50:40big store out on the highway when it
- 50:41opens."
- 50:43Moose looked at him for a long moment.
- 50:46Then he set down his cup.
- 50:49"Let's do it."
- 50:51They worked all morning.
- 50:53Six brothers hauled boxes out of the
- 50:55storage room and stacked them in the
- 50:58back of the garage.
- 51:00They swept the floor twice.
- 51:03Danny found an old rug rolled up in the
- 51:05corner and they laid it down.
- 51:08It was faded blue with a pattern of
- 51:10leaves, but it was clean and soft.
- 51:14Pike brought in a low table and two
- 51:16small chairs from somewhere.
- 51:19Another brother, a quiet man named
- 51:22Hutch, hung a string of small lights
- 51:24along the wall.
- 51:26By noon, the room did not look like a
- 51:28storage room anymore.
- 51:30It looked like a place where a child
- 51:32could be happy.
- 51:33Then Danny's truck came back.
- 51:36The brothers carried in bags and boxes,
- 51:39a set of wooden blocks, a box of crayons
- 51:42with more colors than Moose had ever
- 51:44seen in one place,
- 51:46a puzzle with a picture of a fire truck,
- 51:49two board games, a small basketball and
- 51:52a hoop that hung on a door,
- 51:55a stuffed dog with floppy ears,
- 51:58a book of bedtime stories with a picture
- 52:00of a rabbit on the cover. Moose stood in
- 52:03the middle of it and rubbed the back of
- 52:05his neck.
- 52:07"This is a lot," he said.
- 52:10"The kid deserves a lot," Pike said.
- 52:14Leo woke around 1:00. He sat up slow,
- 52:18blinking at the light.
- 52:20Moose brought him in a chair with wheels
- 52:23and Pike pushed him down the hall. And
- 52:25when they opened the playroom door, Leo
- 52:27went quiet.
- 52:29His mouth opened a little.
- 52:31His eyes moved from the blocks to the
- 52:33crayons to the little lights on the
- 52:35wall.
- 52:37"For me?" he said.
- 52:40"For you," Moose said.
- 52:43Leo looked at the stuffed dog, then at
- 52:45the books, then back at Moose.
- 52:49His chin trembled just once, and then he
- 52:52smiled so wide it looked like it hurt.
- 52:55"Sergeant needs a friend," he said,
- 52:58pointing at the floppy-eared dog.
- 53:00"He does," Moose said. "What's his
- 53:03name?"
- 53:04Leo thought about it.
- 53:06Captain.
- 53:07Pike laughed. Captain and Sarge, that's
- 53:10a good team.
- 53:12The afternoon passed easy.
- 53:14Leo sat on the rug and built a tower of
- 53:17blocks. It fell over twice and both
- 53:20times he laughed.
- 53:22Moose sat in one of the small chairs.
- 53:24It was too small for him and his knees
- 53:27came up high.
- 53:28But he did not move.
- 53:31He watched the boy stack blocks and
- 53:33knock them down and stack them again.
- 53:36The clubhouse felt warm in a way it had
- 53:38not felt in years.
- 53:41Later, when Leo grew tired, Moose
- 53:44carried him back to the cot.
- 53:46The boy's head rested against his
- 53:48shoulder.
- 53:49His breathing evened out.
- 53:52Moose laid him down and pulled the
- 53:54blanket up and stood there a moment
- 53:57looking at him.
- 53:59Then he saw the bag.
- 54:01It was the small canvas bag Leo had been
- 54:03found with.
- 54:05Ruth had left it on the shelf by the
- 54:07door.
- 54:08Moose had not opened it.
- 54:10He picked it up now quiet
- 54:13and sat on the edge of the chair.
- 54:16Inside was a change of clothes, too
- 54:19small and worn thin, socks with a hole
- 54:22in one toe, a plastic cup with a lid
- 54:25and a folded piece of paper.
- 54:28Moose unfolded it.
- 54:30It was a child's drawing. A girl with
- 54:33dark hair, a crescent-shaped scar on her
- 54:35cheek, a tiny motorcycle on her arm.
- 54:39The colors were bright and careful, like
- 54:42the boy had pressed hard to make them
- 54:44real.
- 54:46Moose's hands began to shake.
- 54:49He knew that face. He knew that scar.
- 54:53He had seen it a thousand times in his
- 54:55own memory. He had seen it the night she
- 54:57walked out the door and never came back.
- 55:00His breath came short.
- 55:02His eyes burned.
- 55:05He set the drawing down on the chair
- 55:07beside him
- 55:08and closed Leo's bag with steady hands.
- 55:12Then he whispered so low that only the
- 55:14empty room could hear him.
- 55:17Cass.
- 55:20Two days later, the clubhouse still
- 55:21smelled like rain.
- 55:23It had settled into the wood and the
- 55:25leather and the old carpet, but now it
- 55:27also smelled like bacon and coffee and
- 55:30warm syrup.
- 55:31Leo sat at the long table in a wheeled
- 55:34chair with a folded blanket under his
- 55:36casts.
- 55:38He wore a soft blue shirt that one of
- 55:40the brothers had brought.
- 55:42On his plate were pancakes cut into
- 55:44small pieces.
- 55:46He ate them slow, one bite at a time.
- 55:50And every few bites he looked around the
- 55:52room like he still could not believe it
- 55:54was all real.
- 55:56Moose sat across from him with a cup of
- 55:58coffee.
- 55:59He had not told anyone about the
- 56:01drawing.
- 56:02He had folded it that first night and
- 56:04set it on the shelf and walked away.
- 56:07He told himself it meant nothing.
- 56:10A boy draws what he remembers.
- 56:12Many women have scars.
- 56:14Many women have tattoos.
- 56:17But the scar was a curve like a crescent
- 56:19moon.
- 56:21The tattoo was small and dark on the
- 56:24arm.
- 56:25And the face.
- 56:27The face looked like Cass.
- 56:29It looked like his girl. He had not
- 56:31slept right since.
- 56:34Pike came over with a plate of his own
- 56:36and sat down.
- 56:38Kids got a good appetite today, he said.
- 56:41Doctor said he needs to eat, Moose said.
- 56:44That's not what I mean.
- 56:47Pike nodded at Leo, who was stacking his
- 56:50pancake pieces into a little wall.
- 56:54Look at him.
- 56:55Two days ago he would not let go of your
- 56:57jacket. Now he is building forts out of
- 56:59breakfast.
- 57:01Moose looked.
- 57:03Leo was humming,
- 57:04low and a little flat.
- 57:07Captain, the stuffed dog, sat beside his
- 57:09plate with one ear flopped over.
- 57:12Sarge, the old clubhouse dog, lay under
- 57:15the table with his chin on Leo's
- 57:17footrest.
- 57:19The boy seemed lighter.
- 57:21Not all the way light,
- 57:23but lighter.
- 57:25"He is a good kid," Moose said.
- 57:28"He is."
- 57:30Pike chewed and watched Moose.
- 57:32"You, on the other hand, look like you
- 57:34swallowed a rock."
- 57:37Moose did not answer.
- 57:39He took a drink of coffee.
- 57:41It was bitter and had gone cold.
- 57:43Leo looked up from his pancake wall.
- 57:46"Uncle Moose," he said,
- 57:48"is Captain allowed to have a pancake?"
- 57:51Moose felt his face soften.
- 57:54"Captain is a dog. Dogs do not eat
- 57:56pancakes."
- 57:57"Sarge does," Leo said.
- 57:59Under the table, Sarge thumped his tail.
- 58:02Pike laughed and tore off a tiny piece
- 58:04of pancake.
- 58:06"One small piece," he said, "and do not
- 58:08tell the vet."
- 58:10Leo giggled.
- 58:12It was a small sound, but it filled the
- 58:14room.
- 58:15Moose watched him feed the piece to
- 58:17Captain, who was not a real dog and did
- 58:20not eat.
- 58:22Leo did not seem to mind.
- 58:24He pretended anyway.
- 58:27He whispered something to Captain and
- 58:29nodded like the dog had answered.
- 58:31After breakfast, Ruth came by to check
- 58:34on Leo.
- 58:35She had a folder under her arm and a
- 58:37soft voice.
- 58:39She asked Leo how he slept. She asked if
- 58:42anything hurt.
- 58:44Leo said his legs felt warm and itchy,
- 58:47and Ruth said that was normal and good.
- 58:50Then she said she needed to go over a
- 58:52few things with Moose in the office.
- 58:56Moose stood.
- 58:58He felt every hour of lost sleep in his
- 59:01back and knees.
- 59:03He walked down the hall and stopped at
- 59:05the shelf by the cot.
- 59:08Leo's canvas bag was still there where
- 59:10Ruth had left it.
- 59:12Moose had not touched it since that
- 59:14first night.
- 59:15He picked it up now.
- 59:17It was light.
- 59:19He set it on the cot and opened it. The
- 59:21clothes were still inside. The socks
- 59:24with the hole.
- 59:25The plastic cup.
- 59:28He moved them aside.
- 59:30His hand touched paper at the bottom.
- 59:32He pulled it out.
- 59:35The drawing was crumpled now, like Leo
- 59:37had folded it many times and opened it
- 59:39many times.
- 59:41Moose smoothed it against his knee.
- 59:44The paper was soft and worn. The colors
- 59:46were bright.
- 59:48A woman with dark hair, a curved scar on
- 59:51her cheek, a tiny motorcycle on her arm.
- 59:54The same drawing.
- 59:56Or maybe Leo had made it twice.
- 59:58Same face. Same care.
- 1:00:02Moose's hand began to tremble.
- 1:00:04He walked back out to the main room.
- 1:00:07Pike was clearing plates.
- 1:00:09Ruth stood by the door with her folder.
- 1:00:12Leo was in his chair showing Captain the
- 1:00:14picture on his mat.
- 1:00:17Moose stopped a few steps from the
- 1:00:19table.
- 1:00:20He held the drawing up with both hands
- 1:00:22and still the paper shook.
- 1:00:25Pike looked over.
- 1:00:27What you got there?
- 1:00:29Moose's mouth was dry.
- 1:00:31He tried to speak and had to try again.
- 1:00:35This was in his bag.
- 1:00:36Two days I told myself I was wrong.
- 1:00:39I told myself it was just a drawing, a
- 1:00:41boy's picture.
- 1:00:43Ruth stepped closer.
- 1:00:45Moose, are you all right?
- 1:00:48He did not look at her.
- 1:00:50He looked at the drawing,
- 1:00:52at the dark hair, at the scar, at the
- 1:00:55little tattoo.
- 1:00:57He had seen that face laugh. He had seen
- 1:00:59that face cry.
- 1:01:01He had seen it turn away from him at a
- 1:01:02door he should have held open.
- 1:01:04His hand trembled as he held the paper
- 1:01:07higher.
- 1:01:08"I know her," he said.
- 1:01:11"That's my girl."
- 1:01:13Dawn came gray and slow over the Redwood
- 1:01:16chapter clubhouse.
- 1:01:18The rain had stopped, but the air still
- 1:01:20felt wet.
- 1:01:22Moose stood by the long table with Leo's
- 1:01:24drawing in his hands. His knuckles were
- 1:01:26white. His coffee had gone cold hours
- 1:01:29ago.
- 1:01:31Ruth set her folder down.
- 1:01:33Moose,
- 1:01:34look at me.
- 1:01:36He looked.
- 1:01:37His eyes were red and tired.
- 1:01:40I know that scar, he said. I know that
- 1:01:43little tattoo. That is Cass, my
- 1:01:45daughter.
- 1:01:46Pike came in from the kitchen with a
- 1:01:48fresh pot.
- 1:01:49He stopped when he saw Moose's face.
- 1:01:53What happened?
- 1:01:54Moose set the drawing on the table and
- 1:01:56smoothed it flat.
- 1:01:58Leo drew his mother, and his mother is
- 1:02:00my girl.
- 1:02:02Pike set the pot down slow.
- 1:02:05You're sure?
- 1:02:07I'm sure.
- 1:02:08Moose's voice cracked.
- 1:02:11I've looked at that face for years, in
- 1:02:13my head and old pictures. I know my own
- 1:02:16child.
- 1:02:17Ruth picked up her phone.
- 1:02:20I need to call the detective,
- 1:02:22and I need to call child services.
- 1:02:25This changes things.
- 1:02:28Moose nodded once. He sat down heavy in
- 1:02:31the chair by the table.
- 1:02:33The drawing sat in front of him like a
- 1:02:35small fire.
- 1:02:38By 7:00, the clubhouse filled with
- 1:02:40brothers.
- 1:02:41They came quiet.
- 1:02:43Word had gone around fast.
- 1:02:46Pike put out paper cups and a plate of
- 1:02:49rolls nobody touched.
- 1:02:51Two men carried in a box of old club
- 1:02:53records. Another brought a laptop.
- 1:02:57Ruth sat at the end of the table with
- 1:02:58her folder open and her phone on
- 1:03:00speaker.
- 1:03:02Detective Grant is on the line, she
- 1:03:05said.
- 1:03:06A tired voice came through the speaker.
- 1:03:10We talked to Deek again last night. He
- 1:03:13changed his story twice, then he finally
- 1:03:15admitted something.
- 1:03:18Moose leaned forward.
- 1:03:20What did he admit?
- 1:03:23He told us he lied to Leo's mother.
- 1:03:25The detective said.
- 1:03:27He told her the boy died in a car
- 1:03:29accident years ago.
- 1:03:31He said he did it to keep her away.
- 1:03:35The room went still.
- 1:03:37Moose heard his own breath.
- 1:03:39It sounded loud. Pike put a hand on his
- 1:03:41shoulder.
- 1:03:42Easy, brother.
- 1:03:44Moose did not move.
- 1:03:46She thinks her son is dead?
- 1:03:49That is what Deek told us. The detective
- 1:03:52said.
- 1:03:53He also said he threatened her.
- 1:03:55If she came back, he would hurt her. We
- 1:03:57are still building the case.
- 1:03:58But we have enough to confirm the lie.
- 1:04:02Ruth spoke clear and calm.
- 1:04:05Do you have a name for the mother?
- 1:04:07A last known address?
- 1:04:10Deek gave us a first name.
- 1:04:12Cass. No last name yet. He says he does
- 1:04:15not remember. We are pulling old arrest
- 1:04:17records, old leases, anything with his
- 1:04:20name on it.
- 1:04:21Moose stood up.
- 1:04:24I can do better than that.
- 1:04:26He walked to the box of club records.
- 1:04:29His hands moved fast through folders and
- 1:04:32envelopes.
- 1:04:33Pike joined him.
- 1:04:35They spread papers across the table. Old
- 1:04:37addresses, old phone numbers, names of
- 1:04:40men Deek used to run with.
- 1:04:43A list of places he had worked before
- 1:04:45the club kicked him out.
- 1:04:47He lived off Route 9, Pike said.
- 1:04:50Then a place near the cannery. Then that
- 1:04:52trailer park by the river.
- 1:04:55Keep going, Moose said.
- 1:04:57He always had a woman somewhere.
- 1:04:59He always had somebody doing his work
- 1:05:01for him. Ruth wrote it all down.
- 1:05:04The brothers made calls.
- 1:05:06One man knew a landlord. Another knew a
- 1:05:09waitress who had worked with a quiet
- 1:05:10woman named Cass.
- 1:05:13The sun came up higher and the club
- 1:05:15house grew warm.
- 1:05:17Moose did not sit.
- 1:05:19He did not eat.
- 1:05:21He held the drawing in one hand and
- 1:05:23pointed at papers with the other.
- 1:05:26By 9:00, Ruth had three possible
- 1:05:29addresses.
- 1:05:30By 10:00, she had a name.
- 1:05:34Cass Morgan.
- 1:05:35A woman in her late 20s. No warrants, no
- 1:05:38arrests, just a missing person report
- 1:05:41Moose had filed years ago, and a trail
- 1:05:43of small jobs.
- 1:05:45Moose read the name out loud.
- 1:05:48Cass Morgan.
- 1:05:49He said it soft, like a prayer.
- 1:05:52Pike smiled.
- 1:05:54We found her.
- 1:05:56We found a name, Moose said.
- 1:05:58Now we find her.
- 1:06:01Far from the clubhouse, the morning sun
- 1:06:03hit the windows of a small diner off the
- 1:06:05highway.
- 1:06:07Cass stood behind the counter with a rag
- 1:06:08in her hand.
- 1:06:10She had worked the night shift and her
- 1:06:12feet hurt.
- 1:06:13Her hair was pulled back.
- 1:06:15The crescent scar on her cheek looked
- 1:06:17pale in the light.
- 1:06:19She wiped the same spot on the counter
- 1:06:21three times.
- 1:06:23Then she reached into her apron pocket
- 1:06:25and pulled out a small photo.
- 1:06:27It was worn soft at the corners.
- 1:06:30A baby boy with dark eyes
- 1:06:33and a round face.
- 1:06:35Leo.
- 1:06:37She kept it with her always.
- 1:06:39She looked at it every morning before
- 1:06:41she went home to sleep.
- 1:06:43The cook called out an order. A trucker
- 1:06:45paid his bill.
- 1:06:47Cass smiled and said, "Thank you."
- 1:06:50When the man left, she looked at the
- 1:06:52photo again.
- 1:06:54Her hand closed around it.
- 1:06:56Her voice was barely a whisper.
- 1:06:59Is he alive?
- 1:07:01Is my son alive?
- 1:07:03The diner sat at the end of a long
- 1:07:05stretch of highway, a low building with
- 1:07:07yellow lights glowing behind wide
- 1:07:10windows.
- 1:07:11Trucks rumbled in the lot.
- 1:07:13A neon sign buzzed and flickered.
- 1:07:17The air smelled like diesel and fried
- 1:07:19onions and wet gravel.
- 1:07:22Moose parked his bike at the far end of
- 1:07:24the lot.
- 1:07:25Pike pulled in beside him.
- 1:07:28Three more brothers came behind.
- 1:07:31They cut their engines one by one, and
- 1:07:33the quiet that followed felt heavy.
- 1:07:37"Let me go in first." Moose said. Pike
- 1:07:39nodded.
- 1:07:41"We'll be right behind you. Nobody's
- 1:07:43going to bother her."
- 1:07:45Moose took off his helmet. His hands
- 1:07:47were shaking.
- 1:07:48He looked down at them like they
- 1:07:50belonged to somebody else.
- 1:07:52Then he wiped his palms on his jeans and
- 1:07:54walked towards the door.
- 1:07:57The diner was warm.
- 1:07:59A bell jingled over the door.
- 1:08:01Six men in leather walked in,
- 1:08:03and the room went quiet.
- 1:08:06A trucker at the counter turned on his
- 1:08:08stool.
- 1:08:09A young couple in a corner booth stopped
- 1:08:11talking.
- 1:08:13The cook looked up from the grill.
- 1:08:16Moose did not look at any of them.
- 1:08:19He looked at the woman behind the
- 1:08:21counter.
- 1:08:22She was pouring coffee.
- 1:08:25Her hair was pulled back, and her apron
- 1:08:27was stained.
- 1:08:29There was a crescent scar on her cheek,
- 1:08:31pale and small, just under her eye.
- 1:08:34She did not see him yet.
- 1:08:37She was focused on the cup, on the
- 1:08:38steady pour, on getting through the
- 1:08:41night.
- 1:08:42Moose stopped walking.
- 1:08:44His throat closed up.
- 1:08:47Pike stood beside him and said nothing.
- 1:08:50That was the kind thing to do.
- 1:08:53The woman set the pot down. She looked
- 1:08:56up. Her eyes went wide, then flat, then
- 1:08:59wide again.
- 1:09:01It was like watching a door open and
- 1:09:03slam shut and open one more time.
- 1:09:06"No." She said.
- 1:09:07Her voice was quiet.
- 1:09:09"No, no, no."
- 1:09:11"Cass." Moose said.
- 1:09:14She stepped back.
- 1:09:15The coffee pot hit the counter and
- 1:09:17sloshed. Her hand flew to her mouth.
- 1:09:20"You can't be here." She said. "You
- 1:09:22can't."
- 1:09:24"I'm not here to yell at you.
- 1:09:26Moose's voice was rough.
- 1:09:28I'm not here to fight. I swear it.
- 1:09:30How did you find me?
- 1:09:33She looked past him at the door, at the
- 1:09:35brothers, at the whole wide room. Her
- 1:09:38chest was rising fast.
- 1:09:40Did he send you? Did Deek send you?
- 1:09:44Deek is in a cell, Moose said. He's not
- 1:09:47going anywhere.
- 1:09:49That stopped her. Her hand came down
- 1:09:51slow from her mouth.
- 1:09:53The cook stepped around the grill.
- 1:09:56Everything okay, Cass?
- 1:09:58Pike raised a hand, calm and easy.
- 1:10:02We're not here for trouble, friend.
- 1:10:04Just a family talk. We'll be out of your
- 1:10:06way in a minute.
- 1:10:08The cook looked at Cass. She gave a tiny
- 1:10:11nod.
- 1:10:12He went back to his grill, but he kept
- 1:10:14his eyes up.
- 1:10:15Moose took one step closer, then
- 1:10:18another.
- 1:10:19He kept his hands where she could see
- 1:10:21them.
- 1:10:22There's something you need to know, he
- 1:10:24said, and I need you to hear me all the
- 1:10:26way through before you say anything. Can
- 1:10:28you do that?
- 1:10:30Cass did not answer. Her eyes were wet
- 1:10:33and shining.
- 1:10:35Leo is alive, Moose said. The words
- 1:10:38landed like a stone in still water.
- 1:10:41Cass made a sound.
- 1:10:43It was not a word. It was small and
- 1:10:45broken. The sound a person makes when
- 1:10:48the air leaves them.
- 1:10:51Don't, she whispered. Don't you say that
- 1:10:53to me. Don't you dare say that to me.
- 1:10:56I'm not lying to you.
- 1:10:58He told me Leo died.
- 1:11:00Her voice cracked down the middle.
- 1:11:03He told me there was a crash. He told me
- 1:11:05my boy was gone.
- 1:11:07I looked for a grave.
- 1:11:08There was no grave. I looked and I
- 1:11:10looked and there was nothing. And now
- 1:11:12you walk in here and tell me he's alive?
- 1:11:15He's alive, Moose said. He's 7 years
- 1:11:18old. He's got your eyes and your chin.
- 1:11:21He draws pictures. He draws a woman with
- 1:11:23a scar on her face and a little
- 1:11:25motorcycle on her arm.
- 1:11:28Cass looked down at her own arm. Her
- 1:11:30sleeve was rolled up.
- 1:11:32The tiny tattoo sat there, blue and
- 1:11:35faded.
- 1:11:36She started to cry.
- 1:11:38Not loud.
- 1:11:40Just quiet tears that ran down her
- 1:11:42cheeks and dripped off her jaw.
- 1:11:45"Where is he?" she said.
- 1:11:47"Where is my son?"
- 1:11:49"He's safe. He's at the clubhouse. The
- 1:11:51brothers are watching over him."
- 1:11:54Moose swallowed hard.
- 1:11:56"He's been hurt. His legs were broken,
- 1:11:59but he's healing. He's walking a little.
- 1:12:01He's smiling again."
- 1:12:04Cass leaned on the counter with both
- 1:12:06hands. Her shoulders shook.
- 1:12:09"Deek did it." Moose said.
- 1:12:12"He broke those legs and he left that
- 1:12:13boy on the road to hurt this club and he
- 1:12:16kept you from him all these years.
- 1:12:18That's on him. Not on you."
- 1:12:21"I ran." she said.
- 1:12:24Her voice was wrecked.
- 1:12:26"I ran away from you.
- 1:12:28And then I couldn't find my boy.
- 1:12:30I thought he was dead.
- 1:12:32I thought God took him because I wasn't
- 1:12:34good enough."
- 1:12:36Moose came around the counter.
- 1:12:38He stood close, but did not touch her.
- 1:12:41His eyes were wet, too.
- 1:12:44"You listen to me."
- 1:12:46he said.
- 1:12:47"You are my daughter. You always were.
- 1:12:50I have been looking for you since the
- 1:12:51day you left.
- 1:12:53Not one day went by that I didn't look."
- 1:12:57Cass looked up at him.
- 1:12:59For a long moment, neither of them
- 1:13:01spoke.
- 1:13:02Then she reached down and untied her
- 1:13:04apron.
- 1:13:06She pulled it off and folded it once.
- 1:13:08Her hands were shaking hard.
- 1:13:11"Take me." she whispered.
- 1:13:14"Take me to my son."
- 1:13:16Moose held the diner door open for her.
- 1:13:19Cass stepped out into the cold night air
- 1:13:22and stopped.
- 1:13:24The rain had quit, but the pavement
- 1:13:26still shown.
- 1:13:28She looked at the row of motorcycles and
- 1:13:30the men standing beside them and her
- 1:13:32face went pale.
- 1:13:35Pike tipped his head.
- 1:13:37Evening, ma'am.
- 1:13:40She did not answer.
- 1:13:41She just pulled her thin coat tighter
- 1:13:44and walked to Moose's bike.
- 1:13:47I don't have a helmet, she said.
- 1:13:50Pike pulled one from his saddlebag and
- 1:13:52handed it over.
- 1:13:54Take mine. It's clean, mostly.
- 1:13:58She almost smiled.
- 1:14:00Almost.
- 1:14:02Moose got on first.
- 1:14:04Cass climbed on behind him and held onto
- 1:14:06his jacket with both hands, stiff and
- 1:14:09careful, like she was afraid to touch
- 1:14:11him too much.
- 1:14:13He started the engine. The bike rumbled
- 1:14:16low and deep. They pulled out of the
- 1:14:18lot.
- 1:14:20The other brothers fell in behind them,
- 1:14:22a slow line of headlights on the dark
- 1:14:24highway.
- 1:14:25For a long time, neither of them said a
- 1:14:27word.
- 1:14:29The wind pushed at them.
- 1:14:31The road sang under the tires.
- 1:14:33Towns went by, then fields, then trees.
- 1:14:38Cass leaned her head against his back.
- 1:14:40Her voice came out small through the
- 1:14:42helmet.
- 1:14:44Tell me, she said.
- 1:14:46Tell me everything from the start.
- 1:14:50Moose kept his eyes on the road.
- 1:14:53It was raining hard. We were coming back
- 1:14:55from a charity run up north. Empty road,
- 1:14:57nothing around but warehouses. And then
- 1:15:00I saw something.
- 1:15:02What did you see?
- 1:15:03A boy, he said,
- 1:15:05sitting in the rain.
- 1:15:08Her arms tightened around him.
- 1:15:11He was in the middle of the road, Moose
- 1:15:13said.
- 1:15:14Both legs in casts, bruised up, barely
- 1:15:17awake. I thought I was seeing things.
- 1:15:20I stopped and ran to him, and he looked
- 1:15:22up at me, and I saw your eyes looking
- 1:15:24back.
- 1:15:26Cass made a soft noise.
- 1:15:29He felt her shake.
- 1:15:31I wrapped him in my jacket, he said.
- 1:15:34"Pike called the medic. We got him to
- 1:15:36the hospital fast. The doctor said he
- 1:15:38was lucky. He was cold and hurt, but he
- 1:15:41was strong. He kept fighting."
- 1:15:44"Was he scared?" she asked.
- 1:15:46"He was scared," Moose said. "But he was
- 1:15:49brave, too. He talked a little. He told
- 1:15:51me what happened."
- 1:15:54"Deek."
- 1:15:55"Deek," Moose said.
- 1:15:57"He did it. He broke those legs. Then he
- 1:15:59left the boy on our road to hurt the
- 1:16:01club. He knew we'd stop.
- 1:16:03That's how small he is."
- 1:16:06The wind pushed at them. Cass said
- 1:16:08nothing for a while.
- 1:16:10"What is he like?" she said at last.
- 1:16:13"My son
- 1:16:14what is he like?"
- 1:16:16Moose smiled under his helmet.
- 1:16:19"He's quiet at first, watches
- 1:16:21everything. Got a serious little face.
- 1:16:24But he warms up. He likes to draw.
- 1:16:26He drew a picture of you. That's how I
- 1:16:29knew."
- 1:16:30"What did he draw?"
- 1:16:32"A woman with a scar on her cheek," he
- 1:16:34said.
- 1:16:35"And a little motorcycle on her arm.
- 1:16:38He remembered you.
- 1:16:39Seven years old and he still remembered
- 1:16:41you."
- 1:16:43Cass pressed her face against his back.
- 1:16:46Her shoulders shook.
- 1:16:48Moose rode steady and let her cry.
- 1:16:51"He's got a laugh on him," he said after
- 1:16:53a while.
- 1:16:54"Pike made a joke about his own cooking
- 1:16:56and Leo laughed so hard he almost fell
- 1:16:59off the couch.
- 1:17:00He likes pancakes. He likes the dog that
- 1:17:03hangs around the clubhouse.
- 1:17:05He named it Biscuit."
- 1:17:07"Biscuit," she said. And her voice broke
- 1:17:10on the word.
- 1:17:13"He sleeps in the quiet room," Moose
- 1:17:15said.
- 1:17:16"We put toys in the corner, a little
- 1:17:18table for his crayons. The brothers take
- 1:17:21turns reading to him at night.
- 1:17:23I read to him. I'm not very good at it.
- 1:17:26I do all the voices wrong."
- 1:17:29She laughed then. It was wet and shaky,
- 1:17:32but it was a real laugh.
- 1:17:35"You always were bad at that," she said.
- 1:17:38"You used to read to me and you'd make
- 1:17:39the dragon sound like a vacuum cleaner."
- 1:17:43"I stand by my dragon," Moose said.
- 1:17:46They rode on.
- 1:17:48The highway curved and the trees thinned
- 1:17:50out and the lights of town came up
- 1:17:53ahead.
- 1:17:54"He's walking now," Moose said. "Not
- 1:17:56far, but he's walking. He's got new
- 1:17:58braces and he's proud of them. He shows
- 1:18:00everybody."
- 1:18:02"Does he ask about me?"
- 1:18:05Moose paused.
- 1:18:07"He didn't know about you at first. Tig
- 1:18:09told him you were gone.
- 1:18:11But when I found that drawing, I started
- 1:18:13telling him about you.
- 1:18:15That you were brave, that you loved him,
- 1:18:17that we were going to find you."
- 1:18:20"He asks every night,
- 1:18:22'Where's my mom?
- 1:18:23Is she coming?'"
- 1:18:26Cass was quiet a long moment.
- 1:18:29"I'm coming,"
- 1:18:31she said.
- 1:18:32"I'm coming right now."
- 1:18:33The clubhouse came into view.
- 1:18:36It was a long, low building with warm
- 1:18:38windows and bikes parked out front.
- 1:18:41Some of the brothers were already there.
- 1:18:44Moose could see the porch light on and a
- 1:18:46shape moving behind the glass.
- 1:18:49He pulled up and cut the engine.
- 1:18:52Cass did not let go of him at first.
- 1:18:54Then she climbed down slow, unsteady on
- 1:18:57her feet.
- 1:18:59Pike walked up.
- 1:19:01"He's inside," he said gently.
- 1:19:04"Ruth's with him."
- 1:19:06Cass took off the helmet. Her hair was a
- 1:19:08mess. Her face was blotchy from crying.
- 1:19:12She looked at the door like it was a
- 1:19:14wall she had to climb.
- 1:19:16Moose put a hand on her shoulder.
- 1:19:19"You go on in. I'll be right here."
- 1:19:22She walked to the door.
- 1:19:24She pushed it open.
- 1:19:26The room was warm and bright. There was
- 1:19:29a couch and a rug and a basket of toys.
- 1:19:32Ruth sat in a chair reading softly.
- 1:19:36And there, on the rug, with his new
- 1:19:39braces shining, sat a small boy with a
- 1:19:41pencil in his hand.
- 1:19:44He looked up.
- 1:19:45Cass stood very still in the doorway,
- 1:19:48her breath caught, her hands hung at her
- 1:19:51sides.
- 1:19:52Leo's pencil slipped from his fingers,
- 1:19:54his mouth opened. His small chest rose
- 1:19:58once, twice.
- 1:20:00His eyes filled with tears, and he
- 1:20:02stared at her like he was seeing the sun
- 1:20:05for the first time in years.
- 1:20:09Mom? he whispered.
- 1:20:11His voice cracked right down the middle.
- 1:20:14Cass let out a sound she had been
- 1:20:16holding in for years.
- 1:20:18It came out as a sob and a laugh all
- 1:20:21mixed together.
- 1:20:23She crossed the room in four steps, her
- 1:20:25boots loud on the wood floor, and
- 1:20:28dropped to her knees on the rug in front
- 1:20:30of her son.
- 1:20:32Leo lifted one hand.
- 1:20:34He touched her face with his small
- 1:20:36fingers, right on the scar, light as a
- 1:20:39feather.
- 1:20:41Then his face crumpled and he cried.
- 1:20:44He cried the way a child cries when the
- 1:20:47tears have been waiting too long, and no
- 1:20:49one ever let them come.
- 1:20:52Cass pulled him close and wrapped her
- 1:20:54arms around him and held him against her
- 1:20:57chest.
- 1:20:58His small body shook. He cried into her
- 1:21:01shoulder. She cried into his hair.
- 1:21:05Ruth set her book down very quietly. She
- 1:21:08stood and moved to the far side of the
- 1:21:10room and watched with her hands folded.
- 1:21:13Her eyes were wet.
- 1:21:16Moose stood in the doorway.
- 1:21:18He did not go in.
- 1:21:20He just watched and breathed and did not
- 1:21:22trust his own voice.
- 1:21:24"I thought you were dead," Leo sobbed.
- 1:21:27"He told me you got in a crash and you
- 1:21:29died. He said you were gone forever."
- 1:21:32"I know," Cass whispered.
- 1:21:35"I know, baby. I'm here.
- 1:21:37I'm right here."
- 1:21:39"I drew you," he said.
- 1:21:41"I drew you so I wouldn't forget your
- 1:21:42face. I didn't forget. I kept it under
- 1:21:45my pillow at the old house."
- 1:21:48Cass closed her eyes.
- 1:21:49Her chin shook.
- 1:21:51"You kept me under your pillow?"
- 1:21:54Leo nodded hard against her.
- 1:21:57"I looked at you every night.
- 1:21:59I looked for you every night," she said.
- 1:22:03"I never stopped looking.
- 1:22:05Not one single day.
- 1:22:07I went to every place I could think of.
- 1:22:09I asked everyone.
- 1:22:11He told me you were dead and he
- 1:22:13threatened me.
- 1:22:14And I was so scared that if I came back
- 1:22:16he would hurt you.
- 1:22:17I didn't know where you were.
- 1:22:20Sweetheart,
- 1:22:21I am so sorry.
- 1:22:23I am so sorry I couldn't find you
- 1:22:25sooner."
- 1:22:27"Did you want me?"
- 1:22:28he asked.
- 1:22:29His voice was tiny.
- 1:22:31Cass pulled back just enough to look him
- 1:22:34in the eyes.
- 1:22:35She held his face in her hands, gentle.
- 1:22:39Her thumbs wiped the tears from his
- 1:22:41cheeks.
- 1:22:43"I wanted you before you were even born.
- 1:22:45I wanted you every single day since.
- 1:22:48I never stopped wanting you.
- 1:22:50Not for one minute."
- 1:22:53Leo leaned in again.
- 1:22:55His arms went around her neck and held
- 1:22:57tight.
- 1:22:58Cass rocked him slow,
- 1:23:00back and forth,
- 1:23:02the way she used to when he was small.
- 1:23:05She hummed something low.
- 1:23:07It was a song with no words, just a soft
- 1:23:09sound.
- 1:23:11Leo's crying grew quiet. His breath
- 1:23:13slowed.
- 1:23:14Ruth walked over, her footsteps soft.
- 1:23:17She crouched down beside them.
- 1:23:20"Leo," she said gently.
- 1:23:23"Can you give me one moment, honey?"
- 1:23:25Leo lifted his head.
- 1:23:27His face was wet and red,
- 1:23:29but his little hand stayed locked around
- 1:23:31his mother's fingers.
- 1:23:34Ruth looked at Cass.
- 1:23:36"I need to speak with you.
- 1:23:38Just briefly.
- 1:23:40Not long."
- 1:23:41Cass's face tightened. She did not let
- 1:23:44go of Leo.
- 1:23:46No, whatever you have to say, say it
- 1:23:48here.
- 1:23:49Ruth nodded.
- 1:23:51All right. I spoke with the hospital and
- 1:23:53with the court this evening. There is a
- 1:23:55hearing set.
- 1:23:57Things are complicated because of Deek.
- 1:23:59But I have seen a lot of parents in my
- 1:24:01job.
- 1:24:02I know a real mother when I see one.
- 1:24:05I am going to do everything I can to
- 1:24:07help you keep your son.
- 1:24:09Cass's mouth opened. Her eyes filled
- 1:24:12again.
- 1:24:14You mean that?
- 1:24:15I mean that, Ruth said.
- 1:24:18But I also need you to be clear with me.
- 1:24:20Deek is out on bail. He is making
- 1:24:23claims. He will try to use the system to
- 1:24:25hurt you. Are you strong enough to fight
- 1:24:28this?
- 1:24:29Cass looked down at Leo.
- 1:24:32He was staring up at her, his face small
- 1:24:34and tired and full of trust.
- 1:24:37She touched his cheek.
- 1:24:40Look at this face, she said.
- 1:24:42I have all the strength I need.
- 1:24:45Ruth stood.
- 1:24:47Then we fight.
- 1:24:48I will come by tomorrow and we will talk
- 1:24:50about what comes next.
- 1:24:52She picked up her bag and walked to the
- 1:24:54door.
- 1:24:55She paused by Moose.
- 1:24:58Give them a little time, she said
- 1:25:00softly. Then let the others in. Not all
- 1:25:03at once. They will want to celebrate.
- 1:25:05Keep it calm.
- 1:25:07Moose nodded.
- 1:25:09I will.
- 1:25:11Ruth left. The door clicked shut.
- 1:25:14Moose stayed where he was.
- 1:25:16He was afraid to move, afraid to break
- 1:25:18the still time.
- 1:25:21Cass lifted her head and looked at him.
- 1:25:23Her eyes were red and swollen,
- 1:25:26but something had changed in them.
- 1:25:29The fear was not gone,
- 1:25:31but it had made room.
- 1:25:33Dad, she said.
- 1:25:35It had been years since she called him
- 1:25:37that.
- 1:25:38His jaw tightened. His eyes burned. He
- 1:25:42could not speak.
- 1:25:44Come here, she said.
- 1:25:46He walked over
- 1:25:48He knelt down on the other side of his
- 1:25:49grandson. His knees cracked.
- 1:25:52He did not care.
- 1:25:54Leo reached out one hand and caught his
- 1:25:56finger.
- 1:25:57Cass looked at him.
- 1:25:59"You found him. You saved him.
- 1:26:02Thank you."
- 1:26:04Moose shook his head.
- 1:26:05"I just stopped the bike."
- 1:26:07"You stopped your whole life," she said.
- 1:26:10"For a boy you did not even know."
- 1:26:13"I knew," Moose said. "Somewhere I
- 1:26:16knew."
- 1:26:18Leo turned his face up to his mother.
- 1:26:20"Are you staying?"
- 1:26:22"I'm staying," she said.
- 1:26:24She kissed his forehead and held him
- 1:26:26close.
- 1:26:27She whispered it into his hair, soft and
- 1:26:29sure.
- 1:26:31"I'm not leaving again.
- 1:26:33Not ever."
- 1:26:34The next night the clubhouse glowed like
- 1:26:37a lantern against the dark pines.
- 1:26:40Strings of small white bulbs hung across
- 1:26:43the yard, and the smell of grilled
- 1:26:45burgers drifted out over the parking
- 1:26:47lot.
- 1:26:48The brothers had worked all afternoon
- 1:26:50setting up folding tables and borrowed
- 1:26:52chairs.
- 1:26:53Someone had strung a banner across the
- 1:26:55big double doors.
- 1:26:57It said,
- 1:26:59"Welcome home, Leo."
- 1:27:01in lopsided letters.
- 1:27:03With a little motorcycle drawn beside
- 1:27:05the words.
- 1:27:07Pike had made it.
- 1:27:09He stood back and looked at it with his
- 1:27:11hands on his hips.
- 1:27:13"Not bad," he said. "For a guy who can't
- 1:27:16spell."
- 1:27:18"I can spell,"
- 1:27:19said a big man named Tuck.
- 1:27:22"I just choose not to."
- 1:27:25The brothers laughed. Their leather
- 1:27:27jackets creaked as they moved around the
- 1:27:29tables carrying plates and chips and a
- 1:27:32giant bowl of potato salad.
- 1:27:35Somebody had brought a cooler full of
- 1:27:37soda and a smaller one with ice for the
- 1:27:39kids.
- 1:27:41The music started low.
- 1:27:43A soft guitar from a speaker on the
- 1:27:45porch.
- 1:27:46Nothing loud.
- 1:27:48Ruth had asked for calm.
- 1:27:51Leo came out in a wheelchair borrowed
- 1:27:53from the hospital.
- 1:27:54Cass pushed him.
- 1:27:56She had washed her hair and put on a
- 1:27:58clean shirt.
- 1:27:59She looked different tonight.
- 1:28:02Some of the hard lines had left her
- 1:28:03face.
- 1:28:05She stood at the edge of the yard and
- 1:28:06just looked at the lights and the people
- 1:28:08and the food.
- 1:28:11You okay?
- 1:28:12Moose asked.
- 1:28:14He stood beside her with his arms
- 1:28:16crossed.
- 1:28:18There are a lot of you, she said.
- 1:28:21All of us are not even here, said Moose.
- 1:28:24This is maybe 30.
- 1:28:26The rest are working or home with their
- 1:28:27families. The whole chapter is 140.
- 1:28:31Cass shook her head slowly.
- 1:28:34I forgot how loud it gets.
- 1:28:37Wait until the pie, Pike said walking
- 1:28:39up. Then it gets real loud.
- 1:28:42Leo laughed. It was a small sound, but
- 1:28:45it was real.
- 1:28:47Around him heads turned. Grown men with
- 1:28:50beards and tattoos looked at the boy in
- 1:28:52the wheelchair and their faces changed.
- 1:28:55Softened.
- 1:28:57Some of them looked away fast and rubbed
- 1:28:59their eyes.
- 1:29:00The food came out on big platters.
- 1:29:03Burgers and hot dogs and corn on the cob
- 1:29:06dripping with butter.
- 1:29:07Leo ate two hot dogs and a pile of chips
- 1:29:11and drank a whole can of orange soda.
- 1:29:15Cass kept touching his hair, his
- 1:29:17shoulder, his hand.
- 1:29:19She could not seem to stop.
- 1:29:22Leo did not seem to mind.
- 1:29:24Each time she touched him, he smiled up
- 1:29:26at her.
- 1:29:28Uncle Moose, Leo said.
- 1:29:31Can I have more?
- 1:29:32You can have whatever you want, Moose
- 1:29:34said. You are the guest of honor.
- 1:29:38Leo looked around the yard.
- 1:29:40Everybody here came for me?
- 1:29:42Every one of them, Moose said. And a
- 1:29:45whole lot more that couldn't make it.
- 1:29:47They all wanted to be here.
- 1:29:50Pike handed Leo a paper plate with a
- 1:29:52slice of apple pie on it.
- 1:29:54Save room for this, little man.
- 1:29:57Leo took the plate and looked at it like
- 1:29:59it was the best gift he had ever been
- 1:30:01given.
- 1:30:03He ate slowly, small bites, his legs up
- 1:30:07on the footrests of the wheelchair.
- 1:30:09Sometimes he stopped eating and just
- 1:30:11looked at everyone,
- 1:30:13at the lights, at the music, at his
- 1:30:16mother sitting beside him.
- 1:30:18The brothers brought over chairs and sat
- 1:30:20in a wide circle around the boy.
- 1:30:23They did not crowd him.
- 1:30:25Ruth had said not all at once, and they
- 1:30:27had listened, which was a small miracle
- 1:30:30of its own.
- 1:30:31They told him their names one by one.
- 1:30:34Tuck,
- 1:30:36Ben,
- 1:30:37Sticks,
- 1:30:38Old Ray.
- 1:30:40Leo repeated each name back, careful,
- 1:30:43like he was memorizing them.
- 1:30:45Then somebody started a slow song on the
- 1:30:47guitar.
- 1:30:49It was an old song about going home.
- 1:30:52The brothers hummed along.
- 1:30:55Cass sang the words soft under her
- 1:30:58breath.
- 1:31:00Leo leaned against her arm and closed
- 1:31:02his eyes. Moose stood at the back of the
- 1:31:04yard and watched them.
- 1:31:06His throat felt tight.
- 1:31:09Pike came over and stood beside him.
- 1:31:12"Look at that," Pike said. "Look at
- 1:31:14them."
- 1:31:16"I see them," Moose said.
- 1:31:18"Told you it would work out," Pike said.
- 1:31:21"I got a good feeling about all this."
- 1:31:24Moose did not answer.
- 1:31:26He just watched his daughter and his
- 1:31:28grandson under the string lights, and
- 1:31:31for the first time in years, the tight
- 1:31:33place in his chest let go a little.
- 1:31:36Just a little.
- 1:31:38Enough to breathe.
- 1:31:41Later, after the pie was gone, and the
- 1:31:43music had stopped, and the brothers had
- 1:31:46gone home one by one,
- 1:31:48the clubhouse grew quiet.
- 1:31:51Cass had put Leo to bed in the small
- 1:31:53quiet room with the toys.
- 1:31:56He was asleep in minutes, his hand still
- 1:31:59curled around his mother's finger.
- 1:32:02Moose walked out to the porch.
- 1:32:04The night air was cold and clean.
- 1:32:07The lights flickered now and then.
- 1:32:10The old phone inside the clubhouse
- 1:32:12started to ring.
- 1:32:14It was late, past midnight.
- 1:32:17Nobody called that late unless it
- 1:32:19mattered.
- 1:32:20Moose went inside and picked it up.
- 1:32:23No one spoke.
- 1:32:26Then a click.
- 1:32:27The machine caught the call and the
- 1:32:29little red light blinked.
- 1:32:31The voice was smooth.
- 1:32:33Too smooth.
- 1:32:35This message is for Ms. Collins. This is
- 1:32:38the office of Mr. Hurley, attorney for
- 1:32:40Deek Warren. We are requesting a meeting
- 1:32:42to discuss the child's placement. We
- 1:32:45have filed the appropriate paperwork.
- 1:32:47Please return our call at your earliest
- 1:32:48convenience. Thank you.
- 1:32:52The machine beeped and stopped.
- 1:32:55The red light kept blinking.
- 1:32:58Moose stood in the dark kitchen with the
- 1:33:00phone in his hand.
- 1:33:02He set it down slow.
- 1:33:05He looked at the blinking light for a
- 1:33:07long moment.
- 1:33:09Then he turned and looked down the hall
- 1:33:11toward the quiet room where his daughter
- 1:33:13and grandson slept.
- 1:33:15His jaw set.
- 1:33:17He did not wake them. He just stood
- 1:33:19there.
- 1:33:21Pike came in from the porch.
- 1:33:23He saw Moose's face.
- 1:33:25What is it?
- 1:33:27Moose pointed at the little red light.
- 1:33:30It blinked and blinked.
- 1:33:32Morning came slow and gray. The string
- 1:33:35lights were still up, but dark now.
- 1:33:37Fog hung low over the pines and the
- 1:33:40parking lot looked wet and empty.
- 1:33:43Moose had not slept much. He sat at the
- 1:33:47kitchen table with a cold cup of coffee
- 1:33:49in front of him.
- 1:33:50He had listened to the message three
- 1:33:52more times in the dark.
- 1:33:54Then he had called Alvarez at 6:00 in
- 1:33:56the morning.
- 1:33:58Alvarez answered on the second ring,
- 1:34:01like he had been waiting for a call like
- 1:34:02this all his life.
- 1:34:05"Don't do anything," Alvarez said.
- 1:34:07"Don't call them back. Don't sign
- 1:34:09anything. I'm coming over."
- 1:34:12Leo was awake.
- 1:34:14Moose could hear him in the quiet room
- 1:34:16talking to Cass in a low, happy voice.
- 1:34:20Something about a dog he had seen in a
- 1:34:21book.
- 1:34:23Cass laughed. It was a soft, worn laugh,
- 1:34:27like she was learning how to do it
- 1:34:29again.
- 1:34:31Moose closed his eyes and listened to
- 1:34:33the two of them.
- 1:34:34He wanted to hold that sound in his
- 1:34:36hands and keep it.
- 1:34:38"Want some eggs?" Pike asked. He stood
- 1:34:41at the stove already, a spatula in one
- 1:34:44hand.
- 1:34:45"Not yet," Moose said. "You got to eat,
- 1:34:48brother."
- 1:34:49"I know it."
- 1:34:50Pike cracked two eggs into the pan
- 1:34:53anyway. He did not say anything else.
- 1:34:56That was one thing about Pike. He knew
- 1:34:58when to fill a room and when to leave it
- 1:35:01be.
- 1:35:02Alvarez arrived at 7:00 with his hair
- 1:35:05still wet.
- 1:35:06He set his bag on the table and pulled
- 1:35:08out a folder.
- 1:35:10"All right. What did the message say
- 1:35:12exactly?"
- 1:35:14Moose played it for him.
- 1:35:17Alvarez listened with his head tipped to
- 1:35:19one side, like he was reading the voice.
- 1:35:23"That's a notice, not an order," Alvarez
- 1:35:25said.
- 1:35:27"Not yet, anyway.
- 1:35:29They want a meeting. That's a good sign.
- 1:35:31It means somebody over there is still
- 1:35:33using their head.
- 1:35:35So, what do we do?"
- 1:35:37"We meet with them.
- 1:35:39Calm, polite. We show them Cass is here.
- 1:35:42She's clean. She's the mother, and the
- 1:35:45boy is safe. We don't yell. We don't
- 1:35:48crowd them. Understand?"
- 1:35:51Moose nodded.
- 1:35:53Cass came down the hall carrying Leo.
- 1:35:57He had his arms around her neck and his
- 1:35:58chin on her shoulder.
- 1:36:00She sat him in the wheelchair by the
- 1:36:02table and tucked a blanket around his
- 1:36:04legs.
- 1:36:06He looked better this morning.
- 1:36:07His bruises had faded to yellow and
- 1:36:09brown. His eyes were bright.
- 1:36:13"Morning, Uncle Moose," Leo said.
- 1:36:16"Morning, partner."
- 1:36:17"I heard the phone."
- 1:36:19Moose looked at Cass.
- 1:36:21She gave a small shake of her head.
- 1:36:24"Not now."
- 1:36:26"Older brother just called late," Moose
- 1:36:28said. "Nothing for you to worry about."
- 1:36:31Leo thought about that.
- 1:36:34"Do they know where my dad is?"
- 1:36:37The room got very still.
- 1:36:39Pike turned the eggs over.
- 1:36:41Cass put her hand on Leo's shoulder.
- 1:36:45"He's not going to bother you again,"
- 1:36:46Moose said. "That's my promise. You hear
- 1:36:48me?"
- 1:36:50Leo nodded and picked up a piece of
- 1:36:51toast.
- 1:36:53They were still at the table when the
- 1:36:54knock came.
- 1:36:56Hard and quick. Three raps on the
- 1:36:58clubhouse door. Pike looked at Moose.
- 1:37:03"That's not one of ours."
- 1:37:05Moose stood up.
- 1:37:07He crossed the room and opened the door.
- 1:37:10A woman stood on the step holding a
- 1:37:11leather case in both hands.
- 1:37:14She had gray hair cut short and reading
- 1:37:17glasses hanging from a cord around her
- 1:37:19neck.
- 1:37:20She wore a plain blue coat. Her face was
- 1:37:23tired but steady. Moose knew her at
- 1:37:26once.
- 1:37:27"Ruth."
- 1:37:29"Good morning, Mr. Moose," she said.
- 1:37:31"May I come in?"
- 1:37:33"You know you can."
- 1:37:35She stepped inside and wiped her shoes
- 1:37:37on the mat.
- 1:37:38She looked around the clubhouse. The
- 1:37:41toys in the corner, the small bookshelf,
- 1:37:43the blanket draped over the back of the
- 1:37:45couch.
- 1:37:46Then she looked at Leo in his wheelchair
- 1:37:49and something in her face pulled tight.
- 1:37:52"Mrs. Davis is here, too," Ruth said.
- 1:37:56"She's waiting in the car. She's the
- 1:37:58case supervisor. I thought it might be
- 1:38:00easier if I came in first.
- 1:38:03That was kind of you, Moose said.
- 1:38:06Ruth nodded.
- 1:38:08It wasn't kindness, it was good sense.
- 1:38:13Cass stood up.
- 1:38:14Her hands were shaking, so she held them
- 1:38:17together in front of her.
- 1:38:19This is about Deek, she said, isn't it?
- 1:38:23It is, Ruth said.
- 1:38:26His lawyer filed a motion before the
- 1:38:28hearing.
- 1:38:29There's a claim in it that you abandoned
- 1:38:30your son.
- 1:38:32I want you to hear me very clearly. I
- 1:38:34don't believe that. Neither does Mrs.
- 1:38:36Davis.
- 1:38:37But the judge who signed this only had
- 1:38:39the paperwork in front of him.
- 1:38:41He didn't have the whole story.
- 1:38:43She set her leather case on the table.
- 1:38:46She opened it slowly and drew out a
- 1:38:48white page.
- 1:38:50It had a seal at the top and a lot of
- 1:38:52small print below.
- 1:38:55She laid it flat on the table with both
- 1:38:57hands, squaring the corners like she was
- 1:38:59setting a plate down for someone she
- 1:39:01loved.
- 1:39:03There's a temporary placement order, she
- 1:39:05said. It went through last night. It
- 1:39:08takes effect this morning.
- 1:39:10Cass made a small sound.
- 1:39:13Moose put his hand on her back, flat
- 1:39:16between her shoulder blades.
- 1:39:18Leo looked around at all of them.
- 1:39:22What does that mean?
- 1:39:24It means you'll be staying somewhere
- 1:39:26else for a little while, Ruth said.
- 1:39:30She said it gently.
- 1:39:32She crouched down so she was at his eye
- 1:39:34level.
- 1:39:36With a family trained to take care of
- 1:39:38kids,
- 1:39:39it's a nice house. There's a garden.
- 1:39:41There's a dog.
- 1:39:44I don't want a dog, Leo said. His voice
- 1:39:47cracked.
- 1:39:48I want my mom.
- 1:39:51Cass turned around and knelt down and
- 1:39:53wrapped her arms around him.
- 1:39:55She pressed her face into his hair.
- 1:39:57She did not cry.
- 1:40:00Moose thought that was the bravest thing
- 1:40:02he had ever seen.
- 1:40:05Alvarez leaned forward.
- 1:40:07Ruth,
- 1:40:08there has to be something.
- 1:40:10A stay,
- 1:40:11an emergency review.
- 1:40:13We can have a hearing by Tuesday.
- 1:40:16You can have a hearing by Tuesday.
- 1:40:18Ruth said, "I'll see to it myself.
- 1:40:21But until then, my hands are tied.
- 1:40:23This is not my choice. This is the order
- 1:40:25on the page."
- 1:40:27She looked at Cass,
- 1:40:29and her eyes were wet.
- 1:40:31She set the paper down on the table and
- 1:40:34stepped back from it.
- 1:40:36I have no choice, ma'am.
- 1:40:38The afternoon came and went like a slow
- 1:40:41ache.
- 1:40:42Cass sat on the floor of the quiet room
- 1:40:44with Leo's drawing book open on her
- 1:40:46knees.
- 1:40:48She had not moved in a long while.
- 1:40:51The page showed a house with a crooked
- 1:40:53roof and four windows and a sun with
- 1:40:56thick yellow rays.
- 1:40:58Under it, in careful letters, Leo had
- 1:41:01written one word,
- 1:41:03home.
- 1:41:05She ran her finger over the letters
- 1:41:07again and again.
- 1:41:09"Moose," she said.
- 1:41:11Her voice came out thin.
- 1:41:14"I keep telling myself to breathe,
- 1:41:16and then I forget to do it."
- 1:41:18He sat down on the floor beside her.
- 1:41:21His back rested against the wall.
- 1:41:24The leather of his vest creaked.
- 1:41:28"I know the feeling.
- 1:41:30I did everything right. I got a job. I
- 1:41:33kept my head down. I paid my rent. I
- 1:41:36never touched a drink in my life."
- 1:41:39She looked up at him.
- 1:41:41Her eyes were wide and dry and scared.
- 1:41:45"And they're going to take him anyway
- 1:41:48because a man who lied to me for years
- 1:41:49filled out a piece of paper."
- 1:41:52"Not for long."
- 1:41:54"You don't know that."
- 1:41:56"No," Moose said, "I don't.
- 1:41:58But I know Ruth, and I know Alvarez, and
- 1:42:02I know that judge is going to hear the
- 1:42:03truth on Tuesday, all of it, plain and
- 1:42:05clear."
- 1:42:07Cass closed the drawing book. Her hands
- 1:42:11would not stay still.
- 1:42:13She pressed them flat against the floor.
- 1:42:16What if it's not enough?
- 1:42:18What if Tuesday comes and they look at
- 1:42:20me and decide I'm just some runaway who
- 1:42:22left her kid?
- 1:42:24Moose did not answer right away.
- 1:42:27He looked at the wall across from him,
- 1:42:29where a child's coat hung on a hook that
- 1:42:31Pike had screwed in that morning.
- 1:42:34It was blue with a little hood.
- 1:42:37Nobody had worn it yet.
- 1:42:39You ran because you were scared, he
- 1:42:41said. You came back because you love
- 1:42:43him. Those are two different things.
- 1:42:46Anybody with eyes can see the
- 1:42:47difference.
- 1:42:50She turned away.
- 1:42:52Her shoulders started to shake.
- 1:42:54Moose put his hand on her back and left
- 1:42:56it there and said nothing at all.
- 1:43:00He had learned a long time ago that some
- 1:43:02silences do more good than words.
- 1:43:06Pike came in through the back door. He
- 1:43:08wiped his boots on the mat and looked at
- 1:43:10them both and then looked away quick,
- 1:43:13like he had walked in on something holy.
- 1:43:17Car's here, he said softly.
- 1:43:20The white sedan pulled up the long
- 1:43:22gravel drive at 4:00.
- 1:43:25It was clean and plain and it crunched
- 1:43:27slow over the stones.
- 1:43:30Mrs. Davis stepped out first.
- 1:43:33She was a small woman with a soft face
- 1:43:36and she carried a folder against her
- 1:43:37chest like a shield.
- 1:43:40Cass carried Leo out herself.
- 1:43:43Nobody offered to take him. That would
- 1:43:45have been wrong. Leo had his arms locked
- 1:43:47around her neck. His casted legs hung
- 1:43:50down and knocked gently against her
- 1:43:53side.
- 1:43:54You're coming, right? he asked.
- 1:43:57You're coming with me.
- 1:43:59Not tonight, baby.
- 1:44:01Then when?
- 1:44:02Soon.
- 1:44:04Her voice did not break.
- 1:44:06Moose did not know where she found the
- 1:44:08strength.
- 1:44:10Tuesday.
- 1:44:11I'll be there Tuesday.
- 1:44:13And I'll stand up in that room and I'll
- 1:44:14tell them everything, and the judge will
- 1:44:16see.
- 1:44:17Promise?
- 1:44:19I promise.
- 1:44:21She sat him in the back seat of the
- 1:44:23sedan, gentle as a person setting down a
- 1:44:26full cup.
- 1:44:27She buckled him in.
- 1:44:29She kissed his forehead twice, and then
- 1:44:32a third time, and then she stepped back
- 1:44:34so fast it was like something had pulled
- 1:44:36her.
- 1:44:38Ruth stood by the car door.
- 1:44:40She looked at Cass
- 1:44:42and did not look away.
- 1:44:44I'll be at the house tonight. I'll check
- 1:44:46on him myself.
- 1:44:48You have my word.
- 1:44:50Cass nodded.
- 1:44:51She could not speak.
- 1:44:54Moose leaned into the window.
- 1:44:56Leo's face was small and pale in the
- 1:44:58gray light.
- 1:45:00You listen to me, partner. Moose said,
- 1:45:03you're one of us.
- 1:45:04That did not change today. It's not
- 1:45:06going to change tomorrow.
- 1:45:08You got 140 uncles and every one of us
- 1:45:10knows your name.
- 1:45:13Leo tried to smile.
- 1:45:15It came out wobbly.
- 1:45:18Do they know about the dog and the book?
- 1:45:21They're going to hear all about it.
- 1:45:23The sedan pulled away. Gravel popped
- 1:45:26under the tires. Pike stood with his
- 1:45:28arms crossed and his jaw set hard.
- 1:45:31Two of the brothers stood by the
- 1:45:32gatehouse, not moving, just watching the
- 1:45:35car get smaller and smaller.
- 1:45:38Nobody said a word until it turned the
- 1:45:40corner and the trees swallowed it.
- 1:45:43Then Pike kicked a stone.
- 1:45:47Feels wrong.
- 1:45:49It is wrong. Moose said. We just going
- 1:45:51to stand here?
- 1:45:53For now.
- 1:45:55Moose turned and walked back toward the
- 1:45:56clubhouse.
- 1:45:58We do this the right way.
- 1:46:00That's the only way we do it.
- 1:46:02Inside, Cass had gone to the quiet room
- 1:46:05and shut the door.
- 1:46:08Moose stood in the hall and heard
- 1:46:09nothing at all.
- 1:46:11No crying.
- 1:46:13No sound.
- 1:46:14That scared him more than tears.
- 1:46:17He went to the kitchen and poured water
- 1:46:20in the coffee pot with hands that were
- 1:46:22not entirely steady.
- 1:46:24Alvarez would be back at 6:00 with
- 1:46:26papers.
- 1:46:28The club lawyer had already started
- 1:46:30calling.
- 1:46:31The brothers had started calling, too,
- 1:46:33and word was moving through the chapter
- 1:46:35like a spark on dry grass.
- 1:46:38The phone on the wall rang at 5:15.
- 1:46:41Moose dried his hands on a rag and
- 1:46:44picked it up.
- 1:46:46Yeah.
- 1:46:48It was Alvarez on the other end.
- 1:46:50He spoke fast. He spoke low.
- 1:46:53Moose did not move for a long moment.
- 1:46:56Then his fingers tightened around the
- 1:46:58receiver until the plastic creaked.
- 1:47:01He turned and looked down the hall at
- 1:47:03the closed door of the quiet room.
- 1:47:06"He's out," Moose said. "Deek is out on
- 1:47:09bail."
- 1:47:11The phone stayed in Moose's hand after
- 1:47:13Alvarez hung up.
- 1:47:15He set it back on the hook slowly, like
- 1:47:17it might bite him.
- 1:47:19Then he walked
- 1:47:21back and forth across the clubhouse
- 1:47:23floor.
- 1:47:25Boots on old wood.
- 1:47:2710 steps one way.
- 1:47:2910 steps back.
- 1:47:32Pike sat at the long table with a mug of
- 1:47:34coffee going cold in front of him
- 1:47:37and watched his brother wear a path in
- 1:47:39the floor.
- 1:47:41"Say it out loud," Pike said.
- 1:47:43"Whatever's banging around in your head,
- 1:47:45say it."
- 1:47:47"He walked out the front door."
- 1:47:49Moose stopped. His hands opened and
- 1:47:52closed at his sides.
- 1:47:54"A man breaks a little boy's legs and he
- 1:47:56walks out the front door with a smile on
- 1:47:58his face."
- 1:48:00"Some lawyer got him out."
- 1:48:03"Some lawyer."
- 1:48:05Moose started pacing again.
- 1:48:08"You know how it works. I know how it
- 1:48:10works."
- 1:48:11"Guy like that doesn't have two
- 1:48:13nickels."
- 1:48:14"He's got a public defender with 300
- 1:48:16cases and no time to think.
- 1:48:18Then all of a sudden he's got somebody
- 1:48:19sharp in a nice suit who knows exactly
- 1:48:21which buttons to push.
- 1:48:24Pike turned his mug in a slow circle.
- 1:48:28So somebody paid for that suit?
- 1:48:30Somebody paid.
- 1:48:33The back door opened. A young brother
- 1:48:35named Coop came in with rain in his hair
- 1:48:38and a folded paper in his hand.
- 1:48:40He was barely 25 and still had the eager
- 1:48:43look of a man who had not yet learned
- 1:48:45how heavy the world could get.
- 1:48:49Found out what you asked about. Coop
- 1:48:51said.
- 1:48:52He set the paper on the table.
- 1:48:54The lawyer's name is Vance Keller.
- 1:48:57Office over in Halden. He's got a
- 1:48:59reputation.
- 1:49:01What kind?
- 1:49:02The kind where he takes cash and doesn't
- 1:49:04ask where it came from. He's done work
- 1:49:07for a couple of loan sharks over there.
- 1:49:09Nothing ever sticks. He's slick.
- 1:49:12Coop shifted his weight.
- 1:49:14And here's the thing.
- 1:49:15Keller walked into the jailhouse at noon
- 1:49:17today with the bail money already
- 1:49:19counted. All of it. Nobody had to make a
- 1:49:21call. Nobody had to wait.
- 1:49:25Moose picked up the paper and read it.
- 1:49:28The words did not matter much.
- 1:49:30The numbers did.
- 1:49:32Where's a broke man get $20,000?
- 1:49:36He said.
- 1:49:38Pike let out a long breath.
- 1:49:40Could be he had it hid.
- 1:49:42Could be somebody owed him.
- 1:49:44Could be he's got a friend we don't know
- 1:49:45about.
- 1:49:47Or he's been planning this for a while.
- 1:49:49Moose set the paper down.
- 1:49:52Saving up.
- 1:49:53Waiting.
- 1:49:55Watching.
- 1:49:57Cassie's door was still shut.
- 1:50:00Moose had not heard a sound from that
- 1:50:01room in over an hour.
- 1:50:04He walked to the end of the hall and
- 1:50:05stood there and listened.
- 1:50:08Nothing.
- 1:50:09He raised his hand to knock and then let
- 1:50:11it fall.
- 1:50:13She needs time. Pike said quietly from
- 1:50:16the kitchen.
- 1:50:17She's had time.
- 1:50:19She's had a day, Moose.
- 1:50:21Moose came back to the table.
- 1:50:23He sat down heavy in the chair and it
- 1:50:26groaned under him.
- 1:50:28$20,000, that's not small money. That's
- 1:50:31somebody who wants something.
- 1:50:33Everybody wants something, Pike said.
- 1:50:37Coop cleared his throat.
- 1:50:39There's more.
- 1:50:41Keller filed something this afternoon. I
- 1:50:44got it from a guy at the courthouse who
- 1:50:45owes me a favor.
- 1:50:47He filed a motion asking for a hearing.
- 1:50:49Not Tuesday, sooner. Like he's trying to
- 1:50:52get in front of the judge before she
- 1:50:53hears the whole story.
- 1:50:56Moose's jaw tightened until the muscle
- 1:50:58jumped under his skin.
- 1:51:01Pike set his mug down hard.
- 1:51:04That's dirty.
- 1:51:06That's smart, Moose said.
- 1:51:08That's what it is.
- 1:51:10He's not trying to win. He's trying to
- 1:51:11get there first. Tell the judge a story
- 1:51:13before the judge hears the truth.
- 1:51:16Then everything we say just sounds like
- 1:51:17we're covering.
- 1:51:19He can't do that.
- 1:51:21He just did.
- 1:51:24The rain picked up outside. It drummed
- 1:51:26on the roof and ran in rivers down the
- 1:51:28windows.
- 1:51:29Moose stared at the dark glass and saw
- 1:51:32his own face in it, blurred and tired
- 1:51:35and old.
- 1:51:37He thought about Leo in that white
- 1:51:38sedan.
- 1:51:40Small hands on the window.
- 1:51:42A wobbly smile.
- 1:51:45He thought about Deek walking out of a
- 1:51:46jailhouse door into the free air.
- 1:51:49His hands curled into fists on the
- 1:51:51table.
- 1:51:52His knuckles went white.
- 1:51:55Pike saw it.
- 1:51:57Don't, he said.
- 1:51:59Not that way. You go find that man
- 1:52:01tonight and put your hands on him, and
- 1:52:03then where's the story? Then Leo loses
- 1:52:05his grandfather and his mother in the
- 1:52:07same week, and Deek wins without lifting
- 1:52:09a finger.
- 1:52:11Moose did not move.
- 1:52:14You hear me, brother?
- 1:52:16I hear you.
- 1:52:19Say it back to me.
- 1:52:21Moose lifted his head.
- 1:52:23The anger was still in his eyes, but
- 1:52:25something steadier had settled
- 1:52:26underneath it.
- 1:52:29We do this the right way.
- 1:52:31That's right.
- 1:52:33The clubhouse door opened at 20 past 6.
- 1:52:36Alvarez came in wet from the rain, his
- 1:52:39coat dark on the shoulders, and a
- 1:52:41leather bag under his arm.
- 1:52:43He set the bag on the table and
- 1:52:44unbuttoned his coat and shook the water
- 1:52:47off it without saying a word.
- 1:52:50You know, Moose said.
- 1:52:53I know.
- 1:52:54Alvarez pulled out a chair and sat down
- 1:52:57and opened the bag.
- 1:52:58Papers slid out onto the table in a
- 1:53:00thick stack.
- 1:53:03Keller filed the motion at 4:40. I got
- 1:53:05the copy at 5:30. I read it twice on the
- 1:53:07way here.
- 1:53:09And?
- 1:53:10And it's thin.
- 1:53:12Alvarez tapped the stack with one
- 1:53:14finger. He's claiming sudden new
- 1:53:16evidence. He's claiming Cass left of her
- 1:53:18own free will and never came back. He's
- 1:53:20got none of it written down that means
- 1:53:22anything. Just words and a man willing
- 1:53:25to say them out loud.
- 1:53:27That enough to move a hearing?
- 1:53:29Not by itself.
- 1:53:31But he's hoping the judge will get
- 1:53:32nervous and want to sort it out early.
- 1:53:35Alvarez took his glasses off and cleaned
- 1:53:37them on his sleeve.
- 1:53:40It's a gamble, which tells me something.
- 1:53:43Tell me.
- 1:53:45He's scared. A man with a sure thing
- 1:53:48doesn't rush.
- 1:53:50Alvarez put his glasses back on.
- 1:53:54Deek knows he can't win on the facts, so
- 1:53:56he's trying to win on timing.
- 1:53:58And when a man plays a hand that bad, he
- 1:54:00leaves things out in the open that he
- 1:54:02shouldn't.
- 1:54:04Moose leaned forward. His chair creaked.
- 1:54:08Like what?
- 1:54:10Like who paid Keller's fee.
- 1:54:12Like where the money came from. Like
- 1:54:14whether that money has a paper trail.
- 1:54:17Alvarez smiled, small and sharp.
- 1:54:21I already have somebody pulling the
- 1:54:22records. Cash leaves a mark even when
- 1:54:25people think it doesn't.
- 1:54:27Pike let out a low whistle.
- 1:54:30You're going to go at him for the bail
- 1:54:31money.
- 1:54:33I'm going to ask questions.
- 1:54:35Alvarez stacked the papers neat. And
- 1:54:37he's going to have to answer them under
- 1:54:39oath if I can manage it.
- 1:54:42Moose looked down at the table.
- 1:54:44Then he looked up at the hall.
- 1:54:46The door at the end was still shut.
- 1:54:50You want to fight? Alvarez said.
- 1:54:53Moose stood up.
- 1:54:55His shoulders came back. The tiredness
- 1:54:57in his face had not gone anywhere. But
- 1:55:00something else had pushed in beside it,
- 1:55:02hard and bright.
- 1:55:05Yeah, Moose said.
- 1:55:07I want to fight.
- 1:55:09Alvarez nodded once. He tapped the
- 1:55:11papers again and pushed them across the
- 1:55:13table.
- 1:55:14He just gave us one.
- 1:55:16The next two days felt like a long climb
- 1:55:19up a steep hill.
- 1:55:20Nobody ran.
- 1:55:22Nobody quit.
- 1:55:24They just kept putting one foot in front
- 1:55:26of the other.
- 1:55:28Moose woke before the sun on Monday.
- 1:55:31He stood in the clubhouse kitchen and
- 1:55:32made coffee in the big pot and watched
- 1:55:35the dark turn gray through the window.
- 1:55:39By 7:00, the table was full.
- 1:55:42Pike,
- 1:55:44Coop,
- 1:55:46three brothers from the chapter who had
- 1:55:47volunteered without being asked.
- 1:55:51Alvarez came last, carrying his bag and
- 1:55:54a folder thick as a phone book.
- 1:55:57Where do we start? Moose said.
- 1:56:00We start with paper, Alvarez said.
- 1:56:03He opened the folder.
- 1:56:05Feelings don't win hearings, records do.
- 1:56:08Coop went first.
- 1:56:09He had spent Sunday night at the
- 1:56:11courthouse with his friend who owed him
- 1:56:13a favor.
- 1:56:14He laid out copies of Deeks' old arrest
- 1:56:17record on the table.
- 1:56:19Petty theft,
- 1:56:21a stolen car when he was 22,
- 1:56:24a fight outside a bar.
- 1:56:26And then the big one, years back, the
- 1:56:29charge that got him kicked out of the
- 1:56:30club.
- 1:56:32"Stole from the toy fund." Coop said.
- 1:56:35$4,000 meant for kids at Christmas. The
- 1:56:38club found out and cut him loose.
- 1:56:41Moose picked up the page.
- 1:56:43His voice was flat.
- 1:56:46"I remember that Christmas.
- 1:56:48We made up the money out of our own
- 1:56:49pockets.
- 1:56:50Nobody's kid went without a gift."
- 1:56:53He set the paper down.
- 1:56:55"That record shows a pattern.
- 1:56:58A man who takes from children.
- 1:57:00First he takes their presents.
- 1:57:02Now he takes their legs."
- 1:57:05Pike wrote it down on a yellow pad.
- 1:57:08Next came the medical reports.
- 1:57:11Alvarez had called the hospital and
- 1:57:13asked for every page, and nurse Alma had
- 1:57:16walked them down herself on her lunch
- 1:57:18break.
- 1:57:19She stood in the clubhouse doorway with
- 1:57:22rain on her coat and worry in her eyes.
- 1:57:25"I'm not supposed to do this." She said.
- 1:57:29"You're doing the right thing." Moose
- 1:57:31said.
- 1:57:33She looked at the folder in her hands.
- 1:57:36Then she looked at Moose and something
- 1:57:38in her face changed.
- 1:57:41"Both legs, clean breaks. He'll heal.
- 1:57:45But the bone was set wrong when he came
- 1:57:47in.
- 1:57:48Left that way for hours.
- 1:57:50Whoever did this wanted him to hurt."
- 1:57:53The room went quiet.
- 1:57:55Moose's jaw worked.
- 1:57:57Pike put a hand flat on the table and
- 1:58:00left it there.
- 1:58:02Alma stayed long enough to say one more
- 1:58:04thing.
- 1:58:06"He's a brave boy.
- 1:58:08He held my hand the whole time I took
- 1:58:09his pulse. He asked me if I had a dog."
- 1:58:13She smiled, tired.
- 1:58:15"I told him I did.
- 1:58:17He wanted to know its name."
- 1:58:19"Did you tell him?" Moose asked.
- 1:58:21"Rufus." She said. "He laughed. First
- 1:58:25time I heard him laugh."
- 1:58:27After she left, Alvarez spread the
- 1:58:29hospital photos across the table.
- 1:58:32Moose made himself look at everyone. The
- 1:58:34small legs in casts, the bruise along
- 1:58:37the jaw shaped like a handprint.
- 1:58:40He did not flinch and he did not turn
- 1:58:42away.
- 1:58:43He owed the boy that much.
- 1:58:45"These go in the file." Alvarez said.
- 1:58:48"Photos like this are hard to argue
- 1:58:50with."
- 1:58:51Tuesday was for Cass.
- 1:58:54Moose found her at the table in the
- 1:58:55morning with a cardboard box in front of
- 1:58:58her.
- 1:58:59She had not slept much.
- 1:59:01Her eyes had dark circles under them,
- 1:59:04but her hands were steady.
- 1:59:07"I kept everything." she said.
- 1:59:09She lifted the lid.
- 1:59:11Inside were bundles of paper held
- 1:59:13together with rubber bands, receipts,
- 1:59:17bus tickets,
- 1:59:18a notebook with dates written in careful
- 1:59:20pencil.
- 1:59:22"What is this?"
- 1:59:24Moose said.
- 1:59:25"Every place I looked for him."
- 1:59:27Her voice was quiet.
- 1:59:29"Every town,
- 1:59:31every shelter,
- 1:59:32every police station that would talk to
- 1:59:34me."
- 1:59:35She turned the notebook toward him.
- 1:59:38"I started the day Deek told me Leo was
- 1:59:40dead. I didn't believe it, not all the
- 1:59:42way.
- 1:59:43So I looked. For 3 years I looked."
- 1:59:46Moose lifted a bus ticket. It was worn
- 1:59:49soft at the edges from being handled.
- 1:59:52Route from Halden to Bakersfield,
- 1:59:54another from Bakersfield to Fresno.
- 1:59:57There were dozens.
- 2:00:00"I never stopped." Cass said. "I want
- 2:00:03that written down somewhere. Not for me,
- 2:00:05for him.
- 2:00:06When he's grown, I want him to know I
- 2:00:08never stopped."
- 2:00:11Alvarez sat down across from her.
- 2:00:13He spoke gently.
- 2:00:16"Miss,
- 2:00:17this notebook is better than anything I
- 2:00:19could have found on my own.
- 2:00:21This is proof.
- 2:00:23A judge can look at this and know you
- 2:00:24didn't abandon your son."
- 2:00:28Cass put her hand flat on the notebook.
- 2:00:30Then Coop came in with one more thing.
- 2:00:34"Found the money trail," he said.
- 2:00:37"Keller got paid from a bank account in
- 2:00:39Reno.
- 2:00:40Belongs to a man named Ross Tillory. He
- 2:00:42runs a couple of pawn shops over there.
- 2:00:45Deek worked for him once, years back."
- 2:00:48Alvarez's eyebrows went up.
- 2:00:51"A pawn shop man with a grudge against
- 2:00:53the club."
- 2:00:55He looked at Moose.
- 2:00:56"Deek didn't act alone. He had a
- 2:00:58backer."
- 2:01:00Moose nodded slowly. He set his cup
- 2:01:03down.
- 2:01:04The pieces were coming together now.
- 2:01:07Not just a broken man lashing out. A
- 2:01:09plan.
- 2:01:10A partner.
- 2:01:12A grudge that had been burning for
- 2:01:14years.
- 2:01:16Alvarez closed his folder and folded his
- 2:01:18hands on top of it.
- 2:01:20He looked around the table at every
- 2:01:22face.
- 2:01:24"We have the record," he said.
- 2:01:26"We have the photos. We have the doctor
- 2:01:29and the nurse. We have 3 years of search
- 2:01:31records. We have a paper trail on the
- 2:01:33bail money."
- 2:01:35He turned to Cass.
- 2:01:37"This is a case, a real one."
- 2:01:41Cass looked at the notebook under her
- 2:01:43hand. Then she looked up at the lawyer.
- 2:01:45Her chin came up. Something like fire
- 2:01:48moved behind her tired eyes.
- 2:01:52"Then let's fight for my son,"
- 2:01:54she said.
- 2:01:56The morning of the hearing came gray and
- 2:01:58cold. Fog sat low over the parking lot
- 2:02:01behind the clubhouse. And the big
- 2:02:04windows were streaked with wet.
- 2:02:06Cass stood at the long table with her
- 2:02:09notebook open in front of her.
- 2:02:11She wore a plain blue dress she had
- 2:02:13bought at a second-hand shop 2 days
- 2:02:16before.
- 2:02:17Her hair was pulled back.
- 2:02:19Her hands were clasped so tight the
- 2:02:22knuckles had gone pale.
- 2:02:25"Say it again," Alvarez said.
- 2:02:28He stood across from her, calm as still
- 2:02:30water.
- 2:02:32"Start at the beginning and don't stop
- 2:02:34until you reach the end.
- 2:02:36Cass took a breath.
- 2:02:39My name is Cass.
- 2:02:41I left home when I was 19.
- 2:02:43My father and I had a fight and I said
- 2:02:45things I can't take back.
- 2:02:47I ran because I was young and proud and
- 2:02:49I didn't know how to say I was sorry.
- 2:02:52Good, Alvarez said.
- 2:02:55Now the next part.
- 2:02:57Deek found me in Modesto. He was kind at
- 2:03:00first. He told me he had a job and a
- 2:03:02place to live.
- 2:03:04Her voice caught.
- 2:03:05She swallowed and kept going.
- 2:03:08When Leo was born,
- 2:03:10Deek changed. He drank, he yelled,
- 2:03:14he said I was nothing without him.
- 2:03:16One night I tried to leave with the baby
- 2:03:19and he put his hand around my arm and
- 2:03:20told me if I ever left, I would never
- 2:03:22see my son again.
- 2:03:25Take your time, Alvarez said.
- 2:03:27I believed him.
- 2:03:30Cass looked down at the table.
- 2:03:33I was scared and I was alone
- 2:03:35and I believed him.
- 2:03:37So I stayed.
- 2:03:39And then one morning I woke up and Leo
- 2:03:41was gone and Deek told me he had died in
- 2:03:44an accident.
- 2:03:46He said our son was dead and it was my
- 2:03:48fault.
- 2:03:50Moose stood by the window with his arms
- 2:03:52crossed.
- 2:03:54His face did not move
- 2:03:56but his jaw was tight enough that the
- 2:03:58muscle jumped.
- 2:04:01Now the part the judge needs most,
- 2:04:03Alvarez said. The three years.
- 2:04:07Cass turned a page. Her voice got
- 2:04:09stronger.
- 2:04:11I looked for him. Every town I could
- 2:04:13reach. I kept every ticket and every
- 2:04:16receipt and every note.
- 2:04:17I asked at every shelter and every
- 2:04:19police station. I worked night shifts so
- 2:04:22I could look during the day. I never
- 2:04:24stopped. Not one single day did I stop.
- 2:04:28Alvarez nodded slowly.
- 2:04:31That's your truth.
- 2:04:33That's what you say in that room. Slow
- 2:04:35and clear. You look at the judge, not at
- 2:04:38Deek. He will try to make you small. You
- 2:04:41don't let him.
- 2:04:42Across town, in a motel room with brown
- 2:04:45curtains and a broken lamp, Deek sat on
- 2:04:48the edge of the bed with his lawyer.
- 2:04:51The lawyer was a thin man named Creed,
- 2:04:54who chewed on a pen cap and talked fast.
- 2:04:57"Here's what we say," Creed said. "She
- 2:05:00ran off and left the kid. She's a
- 2:05:02runaway. She worked nights in a truck
- 2:05:04stop. That's not a mother. That's a
- 2:05:07woman who walked away and came back when
- 2:05:09it got convenient.
- 2:05:11We paint her as careless, and we paint
- 2:05:13the club as a gang of thugs who took a
- 2:05:15child."
- 2:05:17Deek smiled. It was not a good smile.
- 2:05:20"And the old man?"
- 2:05:22"Her father is a Hell's Angel.
- 2:05:24We bring that up every chance we get.
- 2:05:27Judges don't like motorcycle clubs. We
- 2:05:29make it about safety."
- 2:05:32Creed clicked his pen.
- 2:05:35"We make them look dangerous, and we
- 2:05:36make her look like a liar. That's how we
- 2:05:39win."
- 2:05:41Deek leaned back on the bed.
- 2:05:43"She'll cry. She always cried."
- 2:05:47"Then let her cry," Creed said.
- 2:05:50At the courthouse, the fog had lifted
- 2:05:53into a thin white haze.
- 2:05:55Moose stood on the front steps with Pike
- 2:05:58beside him.
- 2:05:59Brothers had come.
- 2:06:01Not all 140, but a good number of them.
- 2:06:05They stood along the sidewalk in clean
- 2:06:07jeans and dark jackets, quiet and
- 2:06:10steady, hands folded, hats off.
- 2:06:14They did not shout.
- 2:06:16They did not crowd anyone.
- 2:06:18They just stood there like a wall made
- 2:06:21of people.
- 2:06:22A young reporter stopped at the bottom
- 2:06:24of the steps and held up a small
- 2:06:26recorder.
- 2:06:28"Sir, are you with the club? Is it true
- 2:06:31a boy was found on your route?"
- 2:06:34Moose looked down at her.
- 2:06:36"A boy was hurt. We helped him. That's
- 2:06:38all.
- 2:06:39People are saying the club is dangerous.
- 2:06:43Moose looked past her at his brothers.
- 2:06:46Pike had his hand on Coop's shoulder
- 2:06:49telling some joke.
- 2:06:51Coop was trying not to laugh. Two other
- 2:06:54men stood with their arms loose at their
- 2:06:56sides watching the doors.
- 2:06:59We're a club, Moose said. We ride bikes
- 2:07:02and we raise money for kids at
- 2:07:03Christmas. Any man here today came
- 2:07:05because a little boy got hurt and nobody
- 2:07:07else showed up.
- 2:07:09He paused.
- 2:07:10You want to write something?
- 2:07:12Write that.
- 2:07:14The reporter lowered her recorder.
- 2:07:18What do you want to see happen today?
- 2:07:21Moose put his hands in his pockets.
- 2:07:23He thought about Leo in the foster home.
- 2:07:26Small and quiet in a strange bed.
- 2:07:30He thought about Cass at the table that
- 2:07:32morning. Her chin up. Her voice shaking
- 2:07:35but holding.
- 2:07:36He thought about his own anger. The old
- 2:07:39anger. The kind that used to come fast
- 2:07:41and hot and leave wreckage behind.
- 2:07:45I want the truth to be enough. He said.
- 2:07:49That's all.
- 2:07:50Pike stepped closer.
- 2:07:53You all right?
- 2:07:55Moose watched the courthouse doors.
- 2:07:57Cass was inside now waiting in a small
- 2:08:00room with Alvarez going over her pages
- 2:08:03one more time.
- 2:08:05Somewhere in the building Deek was
- 2:08:06smiling his bad smile and telling his
- 2:08:09lies.
- 2:08:12I'm all right, Moose said.
- 2:08:14I keep thinking about what I'd like to
- 2:08:15do to that man. And then I think about
- 2:08:17what Leo needs.
- 2:08:20And what's that?
- 2:08:22Moose turned to face his brother.
- 2:08:24His eyes were wet at the corners and he
- 2:08:26did not hide it.
- 2:08:28Love, he said. Not rage.
- 2:08:32Rage is what got us here.
- 2:08:34That boy needs love and he needs
- 2:08:35somebody to stand still and be calm.
- 2:08:38So that's what I'm going to do.
- 2:08:41He looked back at the doors.
- 2:08:43Love over rage, that's the whole thing
- 2:08:46now. That's the only thing. The
- 2:08:48courtroom was smaller than Cass
- 2:08:50expected.
- 2:08:51Just a plain room with pale walls and a
- 2:08:54clock that ticked too loud.
- 2:08:58She sat at a table with Alvarez.
- 2:09:00Her blue dress felt too thin. The chair
- 2:09:03felt too hard.
- 2:09:05She kept her hands flat on the table so
- 2:09:07they would not shake.
- 2:09:10Deek sat across the room with Krod
- 2:09:12beside him.
- 2:09:13He wore a clean shirt and a tie.
- 2:09:16He looked like a man who had never done
- 2:09:17a wrong thing in his life.
- 2:09:20When he caught Cass's eye, he smiled a
- 2:09:23small smile.
- 2:09:25The kind that said he knew something she
- 2:09:27did not.
- 2:09:29Judge Whitfield sat up high behind the
- 2:09:31bench.
- 2:09:32She had gray hair pinned back and
- 2:09:34reading glasses on a chain.
- 2:09:36She looked at both tables over the top
- 2:09:38of her glasses.
- 2:09:40"Mr. Creed," she said.
- 2:09:43"You may begin."
- 2:09:46Creed stood up and walked slowly toward
- 2:09:48the center of the room.
- 2:09:50He held a folder in one hand and tapped
- 2:09:52it against his palm.
- 2:09:54"Your honor," he said.
- 2:09:56"This is a simple case with a sad story.
- 2:09:59The mother, Cass, ran away from home at
- 2:10:0219.
- 2:10:03She left her own father without a word.
- 2:10:06She went to Modesto.
- 2:10:08She lived with a man.
- 2:10:10She had a child.
- 2:10:13He turned and looked at Cass.
- 2:10:16"And then, one day she walked away.
- 2:10:19She left that little boy behind.
- 2:10:21She worked nights at a truck stop. She
- 2:10:23moved from town to town.
- 2:10:25And now, 3 years later, she shows up and
- 2:10:27says she wants to be a mother.
- 2:10:30"That's not true,"
- 2:10:31Cass whispered.
- 2:10:33Alvarez put a steady hand on her arm.
- 2:10:37"Wait,"
- 2:10:38he said softly.
- 2:10:39"Wait."
- 2:10:41Creed kept going.
- 2:10:43"We have receipts. We have job records
- 2:10:45that show she changed towns five times
- 2:10:47in 3 years. A mother does not do that. A
- 2:10:50mother stays. A mother fights. This
- 2:10:53woman ran.
- 2:10:55He closed his folder.
- 2:10:57And the child would now live with a
- 2:10:59motorcycle club.
- 2:11:01A gang.
- 2:11:02Your honor, we all know what that means.
- 2:11:05That is not a safe home for a 7-year-old
- 2:11:07boy.
- 2:11:09He sat down.
- 2:11:11Deek folded his hands on the table and
- 2:11:14looked at the judge like a man at peace.
- 2:11:18Judge Whitfield turned.
- 2:11:20Ms. Cass, your turn.
- 2:11:23Cass stood. Her knees felt loose.
- 2:11:26Alvarez nodded at her once, slow and
- 2:11:28sure. She looked at the judge and nodded
- 2:11:31Deek just like Alvarez told her.
- 2:11:34My name is Cass, she said.
- 2:11:37Her voice was small.
- 2:11:38She took a breath and made it bigger.
- 2:11:42I left home when I was 19. I had a fight
- 2:11:44with my father and I said things I can't
- 2:11:46take back. I ran because I was young and
- 2:11:49proud. That part is true.
- 2:11:52She paused.
- 2:11:54The clock ticked.
- 2:11:56Nobody moved.
- 2:11:58Deek found me in Modesto. He was kind at
- 2:12:01first. He told me he had a job. He told
- 2:12:03me he had a place for us.
- 2:12:06Her hands were flat on the table again.
- 2:12:09When Leo was born, Deek changed. He
- 2:12:11drank. He yelled. He said I was nothing
- 2:12:14without him.
- 2:12:15One night I tried to leave with my baby.
- 2:12:17Deek put his hand around my arm and told
- 2:12:19me if I ever left, I would never see my
- 2:12:22son again.
- 2:12:23Objection, Creed said. Hearsay.
- 2:12:28You may answer, the judge said.
- 2:12:30Go on.
- 2:12:32Cass swallowed.
- 2:12:34I believed him. I was scared and I was
- 2:12:36alone. So I stayed.
- 2:12:38Her chin came up.
- 2:12:40And then one morning I woke up and Leo
- 2:12:42was gone. Deek told me my son died in an
- 2:12:44accident. He said it was my fault.
- 2:12:47He said if I ever came back or asked
- 2:12:49questions, he would find me.
- 2:12:51Counselor, the judge said looking at
- 2:12:53Alvarez.
- 2:12:54Do you have proof of these threats?
- 2:12:57We do, Alvarez said.
- 2:12:59He stood and held up a thin stack of
- 2:13:01papers.
- 2:13:04Letters Deek wrote to Miss Cass from the
- 2:13:06county jail.
- 2:13:07Apology letters, your honor.
- 2:13:09In them Deek admits he lied about the
- 2:13:11boy's death and admits he kept the
- 2:13:13mother away on purpose.
- 2:13:15He wrote them because he wanted her
- 2:13:17back. When she did not come back, the
- 2:13:19letters stopped.
- 2:13:21Deek's face changed.
- 2:13:24Just for a second.
- 2:13:27The calm cracked like ice on a puddle.
- 2:13:30Where did you get those? Creed said half
- 2:13:33rising.
- 2:13:34They were in her notebook, Alvarez said.
- 2:13:37She kept everyone. She also kept every
- 2:13:39bus ticket, every receipt, every note
- 2:13:41she made at every shelter and police
- 2:13:43station for 3 years. All of it is here.
- 2:13:47He set the stack down.
- 2:13:49She never stopped looking for her son.
- 2:13:51Not one single day.
- 2:13:54The judge leaned forward.
- 2:13:57Miss Cass,
- 2:13:58why did you not go to the police before
- 2:14:00this?
- 2:14:01Cass looked down.
- 2:14:04I was scared.
- 2:14:05Deek told me he had friends. He told me
- 2:14:08the police would side with him and I had
- 2:14:10nothing. No money, no lawyer, no family.
- 2:14:13She lifted her head.
- 2:14:16Then I heard a boy was found on an
- 2:14:17industrial road
- 2:14:19and I knew.
- 2:14:20I knew it was my Leo.
- 2:14:22I came as fast as I could.
- 2:14:25The room was very quiet.
- 2:14:27Judge Whitfield wrote something on her
- 2:14:28pad.
- 2:14:30She looked at Deek for a long moment.
- 2:14:34Then she took off her glasses and set
- 2:14:36them on the desk.
- 2:14:38I have heard enough for today, she said.
- 2:14:42Her voice was calm and steady.
- 2:14:45This is a serious matter and I will not
- 2:14:48rush it. I want to read the full record.
- 2:14:51I want to read those letters.
- 2:14:52I want to look at the reports from the
- 2:14:54hospital and from the foster home.
- 2:14:57She folded her hands.
- 2:14:59I'll have a ruling by morning.
- 2:15:02The gavel came down, soft but final.
- 2:15:06Creed and Deek stood up.
- 2:15:08Deek did not smile anymore.
- 2:15:11He walked out ahead of his lawyer
- 2:15:13without looking back.
- 2:15:16Alvarez let out a long breath.
- 2:15:19"You did good," he said to Cass. "You
- 2:15:21told the truth and you kept your chin
- 2:15:23up. That's all we needed."
- 2:15:26Cass pressed her hands to her face.
- 2:15:29Her shoulders shook, but she did not cry
- 2:15:32out.
- 2:15:33She just stood there
- 2:15:35and let it pass.
- 2:15:38Behind her, the door opened.
- 2:15:40Moose came in quietly and stopped at the
- 2:15:42edge of the room.
- 2:15:44He did not move toward her right away.
- 2:15:47He stood still, the way he said he
- 2:15:49would.
- 2:15:50Steady
- 2:15:51and calm.
- 2:15:54Then Cass turned and saw him.
- 2:15:56She crossed the room and put her face
- 2:15:59against his chest,
- 2:16:00and he wrapped his arms around her and
- 2:16:02held on.
- 2:16:04"Morning," she whispered. "It's so far
- 2:16:07away."
- 2:16:09Morning came slow and gray.
- 2:16:12Cass had not slept. She sat on the edge
- 2:16:15of a motel bed with her hands in her lap
- 2:16:18and watched the sky turn from black to
- 2:16:20blue.
- 2:16:22Moose sat in the chair by the window.
- 2:16:25He had not slept, either.
- 2:16:27Every few minutes he would look at his
- 2:16:29phone and put it back down.
- 2:16:32At 9:00, the phone rang.
- 2:16:34Moose answered it and listened.
- 2:16:37His face did not change.
- 2:16:39That was the thing about Moose.
- 2:16:42He could hold a storm behind his eyes
- 2:16:44and not let it out.
- 2:16:46"Alvarez says the judge is ready," he
- 2:16:48said.
- 2:16:49"We go now."
- 2:16:50The courtroom looked the same as it had
- 2:16:52the day before.
- 2:16:54Same pale walls, same ticking clock,
- 2:16:58same hard chair.
- 2:17:00But something felt different to Cass.
- 2:17:03The air felt lighter.
- 2:17:05She could not say why.
- 2:17:07Creed sat at his table with Deek beside
- 2:17:09him.
- 2:17:10Deek wore the same clean shirt and tie.
- 2:17:13His hands were folded.
- 2:17:15He looked calm again.
- 2:17:17But Cass noticed something new.
- 2:17:21Deek kept rubbing his thumb against the
- 2:17:23table edge.
- 2:17:24Back and forth.
- 2:17:26Back and forth.
- 2:17:28Like he was trying to erase a mark that
- 2:17:30would not come off.
- 2:17:33Judge Whitfield came in and sat down.
- 2:17:36She set her glasses on the desk and
- 2:17:38folded her hands.
- 2:17:40I have read the full record, she said. I
- 2:17:43have read the letters. I have read the
- 2:17:45hospital reports. I have read the notes
- 2:17:48from the social worker and the foster
- 2:17:50home.
- 2:17:52She looked at both tables.
- 2:17:54I want to say something before I rule.
- 2:17:57This is not a case about money or pride.
- 2:18:00It is a case about a little boy who was
- 2:18:02hurt and left on a road in the rain.
- 2:18:05Everything else comes second to that.
- 2:18:09Cass held her breath.
- 2:18:11Mr. Creed called this a simple case,
- 2:18:14the judge said. It is not simple. It is
- 2:18:16painful. But the law asks me to look at
- 2:18:19the facts, and the facts are clear.
- 2:18:23She looked at Deek.
- 2:18:25Mr. Deek, you broke a child's legs and
- 2:18:28left him on a road. You told his mother
- 2:18:30he was dead. You kept a mother from her
- 2:18:32son for 3 years.
- 2:18:35Her voice was flat and hard.
- 2:18:38You wrote letters admitting this. You
- 2:18:40cannot undo that with a clean shirt and
- 2:18:42a calm face.
- 2:18:44Deek's thumb stopped moving.
- 2:18:47The court finds that Deek is not a fit
- 2:18:50guardian, she said. He is not the boy's
- 2:18:53father. He has no legal claim to him. He
- 2:18:56will be taken into custody today to face
- 2:18:59charges for the injuries he caused.
- 2:19:02Two officers stepped forward.
- 2:19:04Deek stood up.
- 2:19:06His chair scraped the floor.
- 2:19:08He looked at Cass. And for 1 second she
- 2:19:10saw the old anger in his eyes, hot and
- 2:19:14mean.
- 2:19:15Then it was gone.
- 2:19:17And he let the officers lead him away.
- 2:19:20He did not say a word.
- 2:19:23The door closed behind him.
- 2:19:25The clock ticked.
- 2:19:27Judge Whitfield turned to Cass.
- 2:19:30Miss Cass, you made mistakes. You ran
- 2:19:33from your father. You stayed with a
- 2:19:35dangerous man. You were young and scared
- 2:19:37and you made choices that were not good.
- 2:19:41She paused.
- 2:19:43But you also kept every ticket, every
- 2:19:45note, every letter.
- 2:19:47You searched for your son for 3 years
- 2:19:49and you never stopped. That is not the
- 2:19:51mark of a mother who does not care. That
- 2:19:54is the mark of a mother who never gave
- 2:19:55up.
- 2:19:57Cass felt the tears come.
- 2:20:00She did not wipe them away.
- 2:20:03The court grants custody of Leo to his
- 2:20:05mother.
- 2:20:06The judge said. With the support of his
- 2:20:08grandfather Moose as a guardian.
- 2:20:10The child will live with his mother near
- 2:20:12the clubhouse.
- 2:20:13The social worker will visit to make
- 2:20:15sure the boy is safe and cared for.
- 2:20:19She looked at Cass over her glasses.
- 2:20:22I am giving you a chance, young woman.
- 2:20:25Not because you earned it, because that
- 2:20:27little boy needs his mother. Do not
- 2:20:30waste it.
- 2:20:32I won't. Cass said. Her voice was wet
- 2:20:34but steady.
- 2:20:36I promise I won't.
- 2:20:38The gavel came down, soft and final.
- 2:20:41Alvarez let out a breath and smiled.
- 2:20:44That's it. He said.
- 2:20:46It's done.
- 2:20:48Cass stood up. Her knees were shaking
- 2:20:51but she did not fall.
- 2:20:53She looked at Moose.
- 2:20:55He He already walking toward her. He did
- 2:20:57not say a word.
- 2:20:58He just put one big hand on her shoulder
- 2:21:00and squeezed.
- 2:21:02"Come on," he said. "Let's go get your
- 2:21:04boy."
- 2:21:06They walked out of the courtroom
- 2:21:07together.
- 2:21:09The sun was out now.
- 2:21:10It came through the tall windows and
- 2:21:12made squares of light on the floor.
- 2:21:15In the hallway, Moose stopped.
- 2:21:17He pulled out his phone and called Ruth.
- 2:21:20"It's done," he said. "The judge ruled
- 2:21:23for Cass, full custody. I'm the
- 2:21:25guardian."
- 2:21:27Cass watched his face.
- 2:21:29It stayed steady,
- 2:21:31but his eyes got bright.
- 2:21:33"Thank you,"
- 2:21:34he said into the phone.
- 2:21:36"Thank you for everything." He hung up
- 2:21:38and looked at Cass.
- 2:21:41Then he dialed another number.
- 2:21:43A foster home on the other side of town.
- 2:21:46A woman answered.
- 2:21:49"This is Moose," he said.
- 2:21:51His voice was low and sure.
- 2:21:54"The court gave custody to the mother.
- 2:21:56It's done.
- 2:21:57Pack his little bag. We're bringing Leo
- 2:21:59home."
- 2:22:01Three weeks passed like a slow sunrise.
- 2:22:05The hospital let Leo go first.
- 2:22:08Then the foster home let him go, too.
- 2:22:11And on a bright Saturday morning, Cass
- 2:22:14stood on the porch of a small house near
- 2:22:16the clubhouse and held the door open
- 2:22:19with her shoulder.
- 2:22:21The house was not fancy.
- 2:22:23It had white paint that peeled at the
- 2:22:25corners and a front step that creaked.
- 2:22:29But it had a yard with green grass and a
- 2:22:32big oak tree that threw shade in the
- 2:22:35afternoon.
- 2:22:37Cass had scrubbed every room twice. She
- 2:22:40had put flowers in a jar on the kitchen
- 2:22:42table.
- 2:22:43She had made a bed with a blue blanket
- 2:22:46and a stuffed bear sitting on the
- 2:22:47pillow.
- 2:22:49"Boxes are coming,"
- 2:22:51Moose called from the driveway.
- 2:22:53"Make a path."
- 2:22:55A line of motorcycles rumbled down the
- 2:22:57street.
- 2:22:58Pike came first with a box balanced on
- 2:23:01his handlebars like it was nothing.
- 2:23:04Behind him came six more brothers and
- 2:23:07behind them came a pickup truck with a
- 2:23:09couch tied down with rope.
- 2:23:12Pike walked up the steps and set the box
- 2:23:14down.
- 2:23:16"Kitchen stuff." he said.
- 2:23:18"Pots and pans, somebody donated a whole
- 2:23:20set."
- 2:23:22"Roomie."
- 2:23:23"You brought a couch?" Cass asked.
- 2:23:26"Course we did. You can't have a home
- 2:23:28with no couch."
- 2:23:30Pike wiped his hands on his jeans.
- 2:23:32"Found it at a garage sale. Smells
- 2:23:34fine."
- 2:23:36"Mostly."
- 2:23:37Two brothers carried the couch up the
- 2:23:39steps and through the door.
- 2:23:41They turned it sideways and wiggled it
- 2:23:43through the frame.
- 2:23:45One of them bumped his head on the door
- 2:23:46frame and said a word Cass pretended not
- 2:23:49to hear.
- 2:23:51Moose came up last. He carried a small
- 2:23:53box with both hands.
- 2:23:55He set it on the kitchen table and
- 2:23:57opened the flaps.
- 2:23:59Inside were crayons, a drawing pad, and
- 2:24:02a box of colored pencils.
- 2:24:05"For the fridge." he said to Cass.
- 2:24:07"Kids need a fridge with stuff on it."
- 2:24:10Cass touched the crayons. Her eyes got
- 2:24:13wet but she smiled.
- 2:24:15"You think of everything?"
- 2:24:17"I try." Moose said.
- 2:24:20The brothers worked for an hour. They
- 2:24:22moved boxes. They set up the couch.
- 2:24:25They put a small bookshelf in Leo's room
- 2:24:28and filled it with picture books.
- 2:24:31Pike sat on the floor and read one out
- 2:24:33loud doing all the voices wrong on
- 2:24:36purpose.
- 2:24:38Cass laughed so hard she had to hold her
- 2:24:40stomach.
- 2:24:41Then a car pulled into the driveway.
- 2:24:44Ruth stepped out and opened the back
- 2:24:46door.
- 2:24:48Leo climbed out slow holding a small bag
- 2:24:51in one hand.
- 2:24:53He still had the casts on his legs
- 2:24:56but the doctor said they were healing
- 2:24:57well.
- 2:24:59He looked around at the yard
- 2:25:01then at the house,
- 2:25:03then at all the motorcycles lined up on
- 2:25:05the street.
- 2:25:07"Wow," he whispered.
- 2:25:09Ruth walked him to the porch.
- 2:25:12She looked at Cass and nodded.
- 2:25:14"He's all yours.
- 2:25:16Call me if you need anything."
- 2:25:18Cass knelt down on the porch step so she
- 2:25:21was eye to eye with her son.
- 2:25:23She did not say anything for a moment.
- 2:25:26She just looked at him like she was
- 2:25:28making sure he was real.
- 2:25:31"Hi baby," she said.
- 2:25:34Leo dropped his bag. He put his arms
- 2:25:37around her neck and held on.
- 2:25:39Cass held him back and rocked him side
- 2:25:42to side.
- 2:25:44The brothers went quiet.
- 2:25:46Pike looked at the sky like it was very
- 2:25:48interesting.
- 2:25:49Moose stayed back.
- 2:25:51He watched his daughter hold her son
- 2:25:53and his face did the thing it did.
- 2:25:56The storm behind his eyes turned soft.
- 2:25:59Leo pulled back and looked at the house.
- 2:26:02"Is this ours?"
- 2:26:04"It's ours," Cass said. "All of it?"
- 2:26:08"All of it. Your room is in the back. It
- 2:26:10has a blue blanket."
- 2:26:13Leo smiled so wide his cheeks hurt.
- 2:26:16"Can I see it?"
- 2:26:18"Let's get you inside first," Cass said.
- 2:26:22The brothers cleared a path.
- 2:26:24Leo held Cass's hand and hopped on one
- 2:26:27foot.
- 2:26:28The doctor had made him a pair of braces
- 2:26:30so he could walk without the casts.
- 2:26:33They were light and blue and strapped
- 2:26:35around his calves.
- 2:26:37He wore them over his socks.
- 2:26:39Inside, the house smelled like wood
- 2:26:41polish and fresh flowers.
- 2:26:44Leo stopped in the doorway and looked at
- 2:26:47everything. The couch, the bookshelf,
- 2:26:50the little rug in the hall, the crayons
- 2:26:53on the kitchen table.
- 2:26:55"Come here, little man," Moose said. He
- 2:26:58knelt by the couch and held out his
- 2:27:00hands.
- 2:27:01"Let Let see those new braces."
- 2:27:05Leo let go of Cass's hand.
- 2:27:07He stood still for a moment and looked
- 2:27:09across the room at Moose.
- 2:27:11Then he lifted one foot.
- 2:27:13He set it down.
- 2:27:15Then the other.
- 2:27:16His face was tight with focus. His
- 2:27:19little hands were out for balance.
- 2:27:22Step by step he crossed the living room
- 2:27:24floor.
- 2:27:25Moose stayed where he was.
- 2:27:27His hands were open. His eyes were
- 2:27:29bright.
- 2:27:31You got it. Moose said.
- 2:27:33Come on. You got it.
- 2:27:35Leo wobbled once.
- 2:27:37Cass put a hand out but did not touch
- 2:27:39him. He found his balance again and kept
- 2:27:41going. One more step. Two.
- 2:27:45Then he was there.
- 2:27:47He reached Moose and put both hands on
- 2:27:49the big man's shoulders.
- 2:27:51Moose wrapped his arms around the boy
- 2:27:53careful and slow.
- 2:27:56I made it. Leo said. You made it. Moose
- 2:27:59said. His voice cracked.
- 2:28:02You made it, buddy.
- 2:28:04Cass stood in the doorway with her hand
- 2:28:06over her mouth.
- 2:28:08Pike turned away and wiped his face with
- 2:28:10the back of his wrist.
- 2:28:13The whole house felt warm.
- 2:28:15Like the sun had come in and decided to
- 2:28:17stay.
- 2:28:18Two days later.
- 2:28:20The evening came in soft and gold.
- 2:28:23The heat of the day had thinned out.
- 2:28:25And a breeze moved through the oak tree
- 2:28:28and turned the leaves over one by one.
- 2:28:32Leo was inside on the couch with a
- 2:28:34picture book open on his lap.
- 2:28:37He had read the same page three times
- 2:28:39because he liked the part with the dog.
- 2:28:42Moose sat down on the porch swing.
- 2:28:45It was an old thing.
- 2:28:47Wood worn smooth painted white a long
- 2:28:50time ago.
- 2:28:52It groaned when he put his weight on it.
- 2:28:55He set his boots flat and pushed back
- 2:28:57and forth a little.
- 2:28:59Cass came out with two glasses of iced
- 2:29:02tea.
- 2:29:03She handed him one and sat down beside
- 2:29:05him.
- 2:29:06The swing rocked.
- 2:29:08She pulled her feet up under her and
- 2:29:10held her glass with both hands.
- 2:29:13For a while, neither of them said
- 2:29:14anything.
- 2:29:16That was the thing about a porch.
- 2:29:18It let you be quiet.
- 2:29:21Then Cass spoke.
- 2:29:23You know what I keep thinking about?
- 2:29:26What's that?
- 2:29:27That night.
- 2:29:29The night I left.
- 2:29:31She looked at her tea.
- 2:29:33I had my bag packed and I stood at the
- 2:29:35end of your driveway and I thought, "He
- 2:29:37is going to come out and stop me.
- 2:29:39He is going to come out and say he's
- 2:29:40sorry and I'll stay."
- 2:29:43Moose's jaw worked.
- 2:29:45He set his glass down on the arm of the
- 2:29:47swing.
- 2:29:49I was in the garage.
- 2:29:51I know. I could hear the radio.
- 2:29:54She gave a small, tired laugh.
- 2:29:57I waited a long time.
- 2:29:59The swing creaked. A pair of birds
- 2:30:02crossed the sky and went into the tree.
- 2:30:05I should have come out, Moose said.
- 2:30:08I heard you go. I heard your car start.
- 2:30:10I told myself you'd be back by morning.
- 2:30:12That's what I told myself.
- 2:30:15He rubbed his hands on his knees.
- 2:30:17I was too proud to chase you.
- 2:30:19Too proud to say the words.
- 2:30:22What words? Cass asked.
- 2:30:25That I was wrong.
- 2:30:27He said it plain.
- 2:30:28No heat in it. Just the truth set down
- 2:30:31between them.
- 2:30:33I was wrong, Cass. About Deek. About all
- 2:30:37of it. You told me he was no good and I
- 2:30:39told you that you didn't know what you
- 2:30:40were talking about.
- 2:30:42I acted like you were still 12 years
- 2:30:44old.
- 2:30:46Cass did not look at him.
- 2:30:48She looked out at the street where the
- 2:30:50motorcycles had been parked.
- 2:30:53You were scared.
- 2:30:54I know that now.
- 2:30:56Mom was gone and you were scared of
- 2:30:58losing me, too.
- 2:31:00That don't make it right.
- 2:31:02No, she said. It doesn't.
- 2:31:05She turned the glass in her hands.
- 2:31:08But I was scared, too, and I ran.
- 2:31:10I didn't call, I didn't write. I just
- 2:31:13went.
- 2:31:14Her voice got smaller.
- 2:31:16Then Deek told me Leo was dead. And I
- 2:31:19believed him.
- 2:31:20I don't know why I believed him.
- 2:31:22"Because he was good at lying." Moose
- 2:31:24said.
- 2:31:25"Men like that, they practice."
- 2:31:29"He told me it was a car wreck. He told
- 2:31:31me it was quick. He said I shouldn't
- 2:31:33come back because there was nothing to
- 2:31:34come back for."
- 2:31:36She wiped her eye with the back of her
- 2:31:38hand.
- 2:31:40"I sat in a motel room for 2 days, and I
- 2:31:42didn't even go to my own son's funeral.
- 2:31:44There wasn't a funeral.
- 2:31:46But I didn't know that. I didn't know
- 2:31:48anything."
- 2:31:50"You didn't know." Moose said. "You
- 2:31:52couldn't have known."
- 2:31:54"I should have."
- 2:31:56"Cass."
- 2:31:57He turned toward her.
- 2:31:59"Look at me."
- 2:32:01She did, finally.
- 2:32:03"You are not the one who broke that
- 2:32:05boy's legs. You are not the one who lied
- 2:32:08and threatened and stole years from the
- 2:32:11both of you. That man did that, not
- 2:32:14you."
- 2:32:15She nodded,
- 2:32:17but her face was wet.
- 2:32:20"I spent years being angry at you."
- 2:32:22Moose said.
- 2:32:23"I want to be honest about that.
- 2:32:25I'd sit in this chair and I'd think
- 2:32:27about all the things I'd say if you ever
- 2:32:29came home.
- 2:32:30Big speech, lots of words."
- 2:32:33He shook his head.
- 2:32:36"Then I found a boy on a rainy road, and
- 2:32:38I saw your face in a crayon drawing, and
- 2:32:40every one of those words dried up."
- 2:32:44"I'm sorry I didn't call."
- 2:32:45Cass said.
- 2:32:47"I'm sorry I gave you a reason not to."
- 2:32:50She leaned over and put her head on his
- 2:32:52shoulder.
- 2:32:54The swing rocked.
- 2:32:56He put his arm around her, heavy and
- 2:32:58careful,
- 2:32:59the way he held Leo.
- 2:33:02"I missed you." She said into his
- 2:33:03jacket.
- 2:33:05"I missed you every single day." Moose
- 2:33:07said. "Every day, girl."
- 2:33:11They sat like that while the light
- 2:33:12turned orange and then pink.
- 2:33:15Inside, Leo turned a page and said
- 2:33:18something to himself about the dog.
- 2:33:21You know what he asked me? Cass said
- 2:33:23after a while.
- 2:33:25What?
- 2:33:27He asked me if you were going to live
- 2:33:28here, too.
- 2:33:30She lifted her head.
- 2:33:32He wanted to know if you'd be around.
- 2:33:35Moose laughed low and rumbly.
- 2:33:38What did you tell him?
- 2:33:41I told him you'd be around so much he'd
- 2:33:43get sick of you.
- 2:33:45Huh.
- 2:33:46That boy won't get sick of me.
- 2:33:48He patted her shoulder.
- 2:33:51I'll take him to the shop on Saturdays.
- 2:33:53Teach him about engines. Start him on
- 2:33:55the small ones.
- 2:33:57He's seven. He'll get grease everywhere.
- 2:34:00That's the point, Moose said.
- 2:34:03Cass laughed. It was a real laugh, not a
- 2:34:06polite one.
- 2:34:07It came from her chest and it filled the
- 2:34:09porch.
- 2:34:10Moose looked out at the yard, at the oak
- 2:34:13tree, at the street where his brothers
- 2:34:15had lined their bikes that morning.
- 2:34:18He thought about all the years he had
- 2:34:20spent with a hole in him.
- 2:34:22He thought about a small hand on his
- 2:34:23shoulder and new blue braces crossing a
- 2:34:26floor. He looked up at the sky.
- 2:34:29The first star was out, thin and pale.
- 2:34:33He breathed out slow.
- 2:34:36Thank you, he said.
- 2:34:38The morning of the charity run came up
- 2:34:41and clear.
- 2:34:42The sky was a wide pale blue with no
- 2:34:45clouds in it at all.
- 2:34:48By 7:00 the lot behind the clubhouse was
- 2:34:51already full of motorcycles, row after
- 2:34:54row of them, chrome catching the light.
- 2:34:57Moose stood by the big coffee pot with a
- 2:34:59paper cup in his hand.
- 2:35:02He watched his brothers set up the
- 2:35:03folding tables and the coolers and the
- 2:35:06long banner that read Elio's Crew across
- 2:35:09it in bright red letters.
- 2:35:12Pike was on a ladder hammering a stake
- 2:35:14into the ground and telling everybody
- 2:35:17who would listen that he had picked the
- 2:35:19banner color himself.
- 2:35:21Cass came around the corner of the
- 2:35:23building with Leo holding her hand.
- 2:35:26The boy wore a new denim jacket with a
- 2:35:28patch on the back that said "Leo's Crew"
- 2:35:31in the same red letters.
- 2:35:34He had his braces on, the blue ones,
- 2:35:37and he was walking faster now than he
- 2:35:39had a few months ago.
- 2:35:41He still leaned a little, but he did not
- 2:35:43stop.
- 2:35:45When Leo saw the banner, he pulled free
- 2:35:47of his mother's hand and pointed at it.
- 2:35:51"That's my name," he said.
- 2:35:54"That's your name," Moose said, "on a
- 2:35:56big sign."
- 2:35:58"On a great big sign,"
- 2:36:00Moose agreed.
- 2:36:01He set down his cup and walked over and
- 2:36:03crouched down in front of the boy.
- 2:36:06"You know what today is?"
- 2:36:09"It's the ride," Leo said. "For the
- 2:36:12kids."
- 2:36:13"That's right. For kids who need help.
- 2:36:16Kids who had a hard time, like you did."
- 2:36:19Leo thought about that.
- 2:36:21His face got quiet for a second.
- 2:36:24Then he said,
- 2:36:26"So they know somebody cares."
- 2:36:29"Sounds about right," Moose said.
- 2:36:32People started arriving before 8:00.
- 2:36:34Families came first, walking up from the
- 2:36:37street, mothers and fathers and
- 2:36:39children.
- 2:36:40Some of them looked tired.
- 2:36:42Some of them looked like they had been
- 2:36:44through their own hard roads.
- 2:36:47Ruth was there with a clipboard checking
- 2:36:49names and smiling her quick warm smile.
- 2:36:53She had brought two boxes of donuts and
- 2:36:55set them on the table herself.
- 2:36:58Leo stood by the sign.
- 2:37:00He did not know what a mascot was
- 2:37:02supposed to do,
- 2:37:03so he just did what came natural.
- 2:37:06He waved at every single person who came
- 2:37:08through.
- 2:37:10He said hello.
- 2:37:11When a little girl about his age walked
- 2:37:13up holding her father's hand,
- 2:37:16Leo pulled a crayon drawing out of his
- 2:37:18pocket and gave it to her.
- 2:37:20It was a picture of a motorcycle with a
- 2:37:22dog riding on the back.
- 2:37:25"That's for you." he said.
- 2:37:28The girl looked at it with wide eyes.
- 2:37:30She held it against her chest like it
- 2:37:32was made of gold.
- 2:37:35Cass watched from the coffee table.
- 2:37:37She had her hand over her mouth.
- 2:37:40The ride started at 9:00.
- 2:37:43Moose gave the signal and near 100
- 2:37:45motorcycles rolled out of the lot in a
- 2:37:48long rumbling line that snaked down the
- 2:37:51street and out toward the highway.
- 2:37:55The sound of it filled the air, deep and
- 2:37:57steady, like a heartbeat you could feel
- 2:37:59in your chest.
- 2:38:02Leo sat up front on Pike's bike, safe
- 2:38:05between two strong arms, wearing a
- 2:38:08helmet that was too big for him.
- 2:38:10He held on and laughed the whole way.
- 2:38:14The route took them along the river and
- 2:38:16through the old part of town.
- 2:38:19People stood on the sidewalks and waved.
- 2:38:22Some held signs. Some just smiled.
- 2:38:26And then the road turned.
- 2:38:29Moose was near the front. He felt the
- 2:38:32tires change under him, felt the smooth
- 2:38:35pavement give way to the rough, patched
- 2:38:37road.
- 2:38:39He knew this road.
- 2:38:41He would know it anywhere, in any
- 2:38:43weather, in the dark or in the day.
- 2:38:46The industrial road.
- 2:38:49The same empty stretch where he had
- 2:38:51found a small shape on the wet ground on
- 2:38:54a cold, rainy night.
- 2:38:57The same place where a boy had been left
- 2:38:58for dead.
- 2:39:00The same place where a loud, loyal
- 2:39:02family had been born out of a terrible
- 2:39:05night.
- 2:39:06Now the sun was high.
- 2:39:08The road was dry and gold and ordinary.
- 2:39:12Wildflowers grew along the edge of the
- 2:39:15fence in a long purple line.
- 2:39:18The wind moved through the weeds.
- 2:39:21Pike pulled up beside Moose and Leo
- 2:39:24twisted around in his seat to look.
- 2:39:27The boy's eyes went wide.
- 2:39:29He did not say anything.
- 2:39:31He just looked at the road.
- 2:39:33Moose slowed his bike and dropped back a
- 2:39:36little so he was even with them.
- 2:39:38He lifted his hand off the bar and
- 2:39:40pointed at the empty stretch of
- 2:39:41pavement.
- 2:39:43"Hey Leo." He called over the engines.
- 2:39:46"You know where we are?"
- 2:39:49Leo nodded.
- 2:39:50His face was not scared. It was
- 2:39:53something else.
- 2:39:54Calm, maybe.
- 2:39:56Or proud.
- 2:39:58"Is this the road?" the boy said.
- 2:40:01"It's the road." Moose said. Leo looked
- 2:40:03at it for a long moment. Then he turned
- 2:40:06around and reached out and grabbed
- 2:40:07Pike's jacket tight.
- 2:40:09He was smiling.
- 2:40:11"It's just a road now." He called back.
- 2:40:14"Right?"
- 2:40:15Moose looked at the boy.
- 2:40:17Then he looked ahead at his brothers and
- 2:40:19the long line of bikes and the sunlight
- 2:40:22on the pavement.
- 2:40:24"That's right." he said.
- 2:40:26"It's just a road now."
- 2:40:28The line of motorcycles moved on down
- 2:40:30the industrial road and the engines
- 2:40:33rolled and the wildflowers nodded in the
- 2:40:35wind.
- 2:40:36And a lost boy rode through the place
- 2:40:39that had once tried to break him.
- 2:40:41And around him, loud and loyal and
- 2:40:44loving, rode his family.
