  2. 0:02people is the world's oldest religion
  3. 0:04and probably the most confusing one to
  4. 0:07non-hindus some say it isn't even a
  5. 0:09religion more a way of life
  6. 0:11Hindus themselves call it the
  7. 0:12sanatana-dharma the eternal tradition so
  8. 0:15what is Hinduism does viola applied them
  9. 0:18and who is this elephant guy well let's
  10. 0:21find out
  11. 0:22[Music]
  12. 0:29Hinduism is the world's oldest active
  13. 0:31religion it's the result of the merging
  14. 0:34of the ancient Indus Valley Civilisation
  15. 0:36and the nomads that came into India
  16. 0:37around 1500 BC some scholars say could
  17. 0:41even go back many more thousands of
  18. 0:43years but we won't delve too deep into
  19. 0:46dates because dates in Hinduism are
  20. 0:48fairly very controversial but one thing
  21. 0:51is certain
  22. 0:52Hinduism is old like at least 36 Betty
  23. 0:56White's Hinduism has been around for so
  24. 0:58long that it and the concept of India
  25. 1:01itself are inseparable Hindu and India
  26. 1:04even come from the same word Sanskrit
  27. 1:06was the ancient language of the Hindus
  28. 1:08and the Sanskrit name for the Indus
  29. 1:10River is Sindhu the ancient Persians who
  30. 1:13sat across the Indus tended to switch
  31. 1:15their s's to H s so Sindhu became Hindu
  32. 1:18so the people living across the river
  33. 1:20became Hindus the Persians told the
  34. 1:23Greeks who dropped that ferry not Greek
  35. 1:24like H stuck in a fairy Creek like ear
  36. 1:26to the end and boom India Hinduism has a
  37. 1:30long long history but today we'll be
  38. 1:33focusing on just the core beliefs of
  39. 1:35Hindus because I don't have the
  40. 1:37willpower to animate tree arrow long
  41. 1:39video Hindus are a diverse group so
  42. 1:42restrict dedicating their lives to
  43. 1:44prayer while others don't believe in any
  44. 1:46gods but still follow Hindu philosophy
  45. 1:48to make things easier to understand
  46. 1:50let's break Hinduism down into seven
  47. 1:52core beliefs so here's my rap that the
  48. 1:55seven Hindu beliefs fine here's the
  49. 2:03regular version then one belief in one
  50. 2:07universal soul Hindus believe in a
  51. 2:10universal soul known as Brahman a
  52. 2:13formless genderless source of all
  53. 2:16reality Brahman is the universe and the
  54. 2:20material that makes up the universe
  55. 2:21it's a trippy concept but think of
  56. 2:24Brahman as an ocean and everything else
  57. 2:26as drops propelling out of that ocean
  58. 2:29separate for a time but still the same
  59. 2:32thing that makes sense to belief in an
  60. 2:35immortal individual soul in Hinduism
  61. 2:38souls are known as Atma
  62. 2:40actions of the soul while in a body have
  63. 2:42effects on that souls next life when you
  64. 2:45die your soul moves to another new body
  65. 2:47this is called transmigration the kind
  66. 2:50of body the soul inhabits next is
  67. 2:52determined by karma tree belief in karma
  68. 2:56karma is action usually good or bad
  69. 2:59actions that affect society for Hindus
  70. 3:01karmic actions in the past affect us
  71. 3:04today and our actions today affect our
  72. 3:06souls future for belief in moksha the
  73. 3:10goal in hindu life is to some help get
  74. 3:12back to Banamine
  75. 3:13if a hindu can do this they will be
  76. 3:15freed from the cycle of life and death
  77. 3:17this is called moksha you can achieve
  78. 3:20moksha by realizing your oneness with
  79. 3:22Brahman how you realize this is up to
  80. 3:25you for this reason Hindus pray lead me
  81. 3:28from the Unreal to the real 5 belief in
  82. 3:32the valus the Vedas are Hindu sacred
  83. 3:35books of knowledge there are 4 valence
  84. 3:37Hindus believe that all forward divinely
  85. 3:40revealed to ancient Hindu sages will
  86. 3:43take a closer look at the Vedas in a
  87. 3:44while 6 belief in cyclical time for
  88. 3:49Hindus there are no beginnings or
  89. 3:50endings time is a series of cycles each
  90. 3:54cycle containing four ages our use is
  91. 3:57accreta the treta the dawah Lapera and
  92. 4:00the kali added together the four use
  93. 4:03total about 4.3 to million years at the
  94. 4:07end of each cycle declining human
  95. 4:10morality leads to the total destruction
  96. 4:12of reality Hindus believe that we are in
  97. 4:15the fourth and final youg Kali
  98. 4:17seven belief in Dharma Dharma is a
  99. 4:20difficult word to translate to English
  100. 4:22proper behavior is the best that I could
  101. 4:25come up with Dharma maintains balance in
  102. 4:27the universe as long as everything in
  103. 4:30the universe like animals plants and
  104. 4:31humans follow their Dharma and
  105. 4:34everything will be fine if they break
  106. 4:36from the Dharma though things will be
  107. 4:38super not fine
  108. 4:40each beam has its own Dharma Alliance
  109. 4:44Dharma is to kill and eat antelope a
  110. 4:46king's Dharma is to rule well a
  111. 4:48subscribers Dharma is to smash the like
  112. 4:51button and ring the notification bell
  113. 4:53for humans their specific dharma is
  114. 4:56usually based on their age and their
  115. 4:58caste an old priest will have a very
  116. 5:00different dama than a young merchant for
  117. 5:02example so those are the seven core
  118. 5:04beliefs of Hinduism with them you can
  119. 5:07understand the Hindu mindset unlike
  120. 5:09Christianity or Islam Hinduism is a
  121. 5:12non-profit organization there is no
  122. 5:14Jesus or Mohammed for Hindus there is no
  123. 5:17Bible Koran or Torah instead they have a
  124. 5:20bunch and I mean a bunch of different
  125. 5:23sacred texts the four Vedas form the
  126. 5:25basis of the Hindu faith so let's take a
  127. 5:28look at them one the Rig Veda the Rig
  128. 5:31Veda is a collection of songs that
  129. 5:32praise and discuss ideas like truth
  130. 5:35reality and the universe along with
  131. 5:38discussions and war weddings and rituals
  132. 5:40to the Yahoo Veda the Ayurveda covers
  133. 5:44stuff such as sacrificial rites and
  134. 5:46rituals tree the sama Veda sama
  135. 5:49literally means sweet song that destroys
  136. 5:52sorrow it is mostly songs dedicated to
  137. 5:55praising gods it's different than the
  138. 5:57rest of the Vedas because it's set to
  139. 5:59music for the atharvaveda
  140. 6:02the attire of a Veda is my favorite one
  141. 6:04do you want to curse your enemies our
  142. 6:06charm that special someone maybe learn
  143. 6:09to invoke rain or discover herbal
  144. 6:11medicine along with tips on warfare like
  145. 6:13how to make poison arrows
  146. 6:15well this Veda has you covered along
  147. 6:17with a bunch of other charms and curses
  148. 6:19it even has a curse against cursors
  149. 6:22avoid us Oh curse as a burning fire
  150. 6:25avoids a lake strike him here that
  151. 6:28curses us as the lightning of heaven the
  152. 6:30tree and link to the atharvaveda
  153. 6:33is in the description just in case you
  154. 6:34need a spell to get a wife or another to
  155. 6:37banish pigeons from your presence it's
  156. 6:38it's great after the Vedas come to
  157. 6:41Upanishads which are like a sequel that
  158. 6:43makes the original make much more sense
  159. 6:46they were probably written down between
  160. 6:48800 BC and 500 BC during a time when
  161. 6:51some Hindus started to
  162. 6:53the Vedas their ideas became the
  163. 6:56Upanishads Upanishads are books on
  164. 6:58philosophy like we would expect from
  165. 7:00Plato or Aristotle they're all about
  166. 7:02questioning doubt debate and finding the
  167. 7:06answers to life's difficult questions a
  168. 7:08theme in the Upanishads is that people
  169. 7:10are not their minds or bodies or egos
  170. 7:13but they're Atman
  171. 7:15your soul is you everything else is
  172. 7:17unreal and temporary after the holy
  173. 7:20texts like the Vedas and Upanishads are
  174. 7:22other less divine but still important
  175. 7:24texts
  176. 7:25these include stuff like the Puranas the
  177. 7:28Bhagavad Gita and Jeremiah and the
  178. 7:30Mahabharata the Puranas are like
  179. 7:33encyclopedias of Hindu beliefs there are
  180. 7:3618 well-known Puranas the Puranas cover
  181. 7:39things from yoga to army organization to
  182. 7:41taxation to the caste system to hell
  183. 7:44guards and everything in between the
  184. 7:47bhagavad-gita get over short is one of
  185. 7:50Hinduism's most important texts the gita
  186. 7:53takes place on a battlefield where
  187. 7:54arjuna a great warrior refuses to fight
  188. 7:57lord krishna steps in to urge a unit to
  189. 8:00fight and their discussion covers things
  190. 8:02such as dharma and how to live your best
  191. 8:04life
  192. 8:04Arjuna eventually fought after Lord
  193. 8:07Krishna taught him the truth about
  194. 8:09Dharma as a member of the warrior caste
  195. 8:11a Yuna's Dharma was to fight against
  196. 8:14evil the lesson of the Gita is that
  197. 8:16everyone faces difficult choices but
  198. 8:19they must on them according to their
  199. 8:21Dharma no matter how unpleasant along
  200. 8:24with all these philosophical texts
  201. 8:26Hinduism has two action-packed epics
  202. 8:29jeremiah and the Mahabharata jeremiah
  203. 8:31the early of the two texts tells the
  204. 8:34story of Prince Rama in the epic you
  205. 8:36find out about his 14-year long exile
  206. 8:38the abduction of his wife Sita his
  207. 8:40battle with the evil demon Ravana and
  208. 8:42his awesome monkey sidekick Hanuman the
  209. 8:47second epic the Mahabharata is a longest
  210. 8:50poem in the world five times the length
  211. 8:52of the Bible and eight times the length
  212. 8:54of the Iliad and Odyssey combined it
  213. 8:56rivals any soap opera you've ever seen
  214. 8:59when it comes to drama
  215. 9:03murder betrayal love love murder and
  216. 9:06giant battles the Mahabharata has it all
  217. 9:09the theme willing true their Amaya and
  218. 9:11the Mahabharata is that Dharma must be
  219. 9:13followed for society to function in
  220. 9:17Hinduism there are four goals a person
  221. 9:19should aim for to have a good life the
  222. 9:22first of these is Dharma followed by
  223. 9:24artha the pursuit of prosperity and good
  224. 9:26reputation kama pleasure both in body
  225. 9:29and in mind and a moksha release from
  226. 9:33the cycles of rebirth Hindus should
  227. 9:35practice artha and kama with Dharma in
  228. 9:38order to achieve moksha there are also
  229. 9:40six temptations Hindu should try and
  230. 9:42avoid kama lost and materialism this
  231. 9:45camera is different from the good camera
  232. 9:47mentioned above I know
  233. 9:49Nexus cruda which is anger loja which is
  234. 9:52greed maha which is unrealistic
  235. 9:55attachment to things people and power
  236. 9:57mother which is pride and mattes area
  237. 10:00which is jealousy by following their
  238. 10:02Dharma and avoiding these six
  239. 10:04temptations a Hindu can break the cycle
  240. 10:06of rebirth and have their soul merge
  241. 10:09back into Brahman but even though
  242. 10:12everything comes from Brahman who is the
  243. 10:14one real thing in Hinduism Hindus do
  244. 10:17after all have thousands of gods so
  245. 10:20let's take a look at them first
  246. 10:22there's Brahma the Creator he created
  247. 10:24everything in the universe but he is not
  248. 10:26the universe itself because that's
  249. 10:29Brahman they aren't the same thing
  250. 10:30that last letter changed a lot
  251. 10:32apparently he has four heads
  252. 10:34the heads face each of the four
  253. 10:36directions to represent the four Vedas
  254. 10:38which he created and the four Yuke's
  255. 10:40he also holds a book which represents
  256. 10:42knowledge oh and he rides a giant Swan
  257. 10:45because he's just fancy his consort is
  258. 10:47Saraswathi the goddess of learning
  259. 10:49Vishnu the preserver is the second
  260. 10:51member of the Hindu Trinity he preserves
  261. 10:54the world created by Brahma until is
  262. 10:56eventually destroyed by Shiva he holds a
  263. 11:00discus which he used to cut down anyone
  264. 11:01that hasn't messed with his Dharma along
  265. 11:03with a conch which symbolizes victory
  266. 11:06and the five elements Vishnu has many
  267. 11:08many avatars such as Krishna or Rama who
  268. 11:11he uses to defend Dharma
  269. 11:14on earth oh and he rides a giant eagle
  270. 11:16named Garuda Vishnu has two consorts the
  271. 11:20Goddess Lakshmi and Boo Devi
  272. 11:23boo Devi is the earth goddess and
  273. 11:25Lakshmi is the goddess of good fortune
  274. 11:26and wealth next is Shiva the destroyer
  275. 11:30the third member of the Hindu Trinity
  276. 11:32it's his job to destroy the universe in
  277. 11:35order to prepare for its renewal at the
  278. 11:37end of each cycle of time the most
  279. 11:39identifiable of his features is his
  280. 11:41third eye which he almost always keeps
  281. 11:44closed if he does open it and you're in
  282. 11:46front of them then you will have your
  283. 11:48face melted off when not on making
  284. 11:50existence Shiva enjoys long walks with
  285. 11:52his bull named Nandi at the end of the
  286. 11:58Kali Yuga the fourth age of the world
  287. 12:00Shiva will perform a dance that destroys
  288. 12:02the universe which is odd because people
  289. 12:05have told me that my dance moves make
  290. 12:07them wish the world would end so me and
  291. 12:09Shiva have quite a lot in common
  292. 12:10Parvati and sati are Shiva's consorts
  293. 12:13Shiva also has two sons Ganesha and
  294. 12:17Murugan Ganesha is the worship as the
  295. 12:19remover of obstacles and Murugan is the
  296. 12:22God of War
  297. 12:23Ganesha holds a very special place in
  298. 12:25the heart of Hindus due to him being the
  299. 12:28remover of obstacles the elephant head
  300. 12:31is the most obvious clue to identifying
  301. 12:33him he was actually born with a human
  302. 12:35head but after Shiva cut that one off he
  303. 12:37kind of had to make do with an elephant
  304. 12:38one if you're Christian or Muslim you're
  305. 12:42aware that your religion has a bunch of
  306. 12:44different denominations like Catholics
  307. 12:47or Protestants Sunni and Shia Hinduism
  308. 12:50has these two Hindus developed four
  309. 12:53major denominations some of which have
  310. 12:55their own subdivisions the Vicodin Ava's
  311. 12:58primarily worship Vishnu and Chavez
  312. 13:01primarily worship Shiva and his sons
  313. 13:03smart does follow sacred texts like the
  314. 13:06Puranas Jeremiah and the Mahabharata
  315. 13:08rather than the Vedas they worship five
  316. 13:11gods and goddesses Ganesha Durga storia
  317. 13:13Shiva and a preferred avatar of Vishnu
  318. 13:16finally Schachter's worship the goddess
  319. 13:18Devi chapter C Devi as the ultimate and
  320. 13:21eternal reality like a feminine Brahman
  321. 13:24even though there are all these
  322. 13:26variations and more
  323. 13:27the core beliefs of hindus remain mostly
  324. 13:30the same hindus believe that dharma
  325. 13:34keeps the balance in the universe if the
  326. 13:36scales between good and evil start
  327. 13:38tipping towards evil then something
  328. 13:41needs to intervene to fix the universes
  329. 13:43dharma this divine intervention is known
  330. 13:46as an avatar the literal meaning of the
  331. 13:48word avatar is descent avatars are gods
  332. 13:52that descend to earth to intervene
  333. 13:54whenever help is needed to restore
  334. 13:56Dharma for example when the earth was
  335. 13:58dragged underneath the ocean Vishnu
  336. 14:00descend to earth as the avatar of raha a
  337. 14:03bore and dragged the earth back out in
  338. 14:05other cases Vishnu was born on earth as
  339. 14:08a human avatar like Rama or Krishna
  340. 14:11where he spent his avatars life fixing
  341. 14:14Dharma
  342. 14:14so the caste system if you only know one
  343. 14:18thing about Hinduism this is probably it
  344. 14:21people see it as an oppressive system
  345. 14:24that locks people in place based on
  346. 14:27their birth and for a huge part of
  347. 14:29history that's all it's been
  348. 14:30unfortunately let's do a quick
  349. 14:32explanation of what the caste system is
  350. 14:35in Hinduism there are four castes or
  351. 14:37classes that you can be born into
  352. 14:40there's the Brahmin the priest the
  353. 14:42Kshatriyas the Warriors the vicious the
  354. 14:44traders and the sudras
  355. 14:46the manual laborers the main basis for
  356. 14:49the caste system can be found in the
  357. 14:50back by Geeta
  358. 14:51and the Rig Veda Krishna says in the
  359. 14:53Gita I have created a fourfold system in
  360. 14:57order to distinguish among most
  361. 14:59qualities and functions the Rig Veda
  362. 15:01also refers to the forecast
  363. 15:04it says humans were created from parts
  364. 15:06of the God
  365. 15:07Purusha the Brahmin from his face the
  366. 15:09Kshatriya from his arms the Asia his
  367. 15:12thighs and the shudra his feet this
  368. 15:15system was supposed to assign people
  369. 15:17functions based on their abilities not
  370. 15:20their birth if someone had the qualities
  371. 15:22of a Brahmin or a visa they could fill
  372. 15:25those roles the Gita
  373. 15:27didn't restrict movement among castes
  374. 15:29and the caste system functioned as
  375. 15:31intended for a while until a document
  376. 15:35known as the laws of Manu came about
  377. 15:37around the fifth century BC popularly
  378. 15:40referred to as the
  379. 15:41Schmidty day created hard rules for
  380. 15:44hindu life - rules presented in it
  381. 15:47contributed to the way the caste system
  382. 15:50turned out man who state that the
  383. 15:52Brahmin were the Lords of all castes and
  384. 15:55he forbid moving among the castes the
  385. 15:59cash you were born into was now the
  386. 16:01caste you're stuck in if you give humans
  387. 16:04a hierarchy that exploited and things
  388. 16:06will go sour pretty quickly
  389. 16:08as time passed hindus began thinking in
  390. 16:11terms of upper and lower castes soon
  391. 16:14cleaning toilets tanning leather and
  392. 16:16dealing with meat products were thought
  393. 16:18to be impure the people doing those jobs
  394. 16:21became Untouchables the lowest of the
  395. 16:24low a people without caste and the rest
