- 0:00Look at your phone's box or check its
- 0:02settings right now. It is very likely
- 0:06you have an option enabled that
- 0:07promises to give you four, six, or even
- 0:108 GB of RAM completely free. Samsung
- 0:13calls it RAM Plus, Xiaomi calls it
- 0:16memory extension, and other brands sell
- 0:19it as dynamic RAM. They paint it as if
- 0:22they’ve magically doubled your
- 0:24phone's power, as if they’d truly
- 0:27discovered an infinite RAM glitch. But
- 0:30the reality is a slap in the face. That
- 0:34feature is directly to blame for your
- 0:36phone stuttering while scrolling, the
- 0:38camera taking three seconds to open,
- 0:40and the battery draining on its own.
- 0:43Today you'll see physical proof of why
- 0:45this option is a trap, how to turn it
- 0:47off in two minutes, and the difference
- 0:49you’ll feel in your hand once your
- 0:51processor can breathe again. I’d
- 0:55known this for a while, but the last
- 0:57straw for me was walking into a store
- 1:00and seeing a giant sign for a budget
- 1:02phone advertised with 16 GB of RAM for
- 1:05under $ 200, when the tiny spec sheet
- 1:08on the back showed it only had 4 GB of
- 1:10actual RAM on the board. It is a
- 1:14legalized marketing scam. Excellent.
- 1:17Everything is going very well.
- 1:20>> Installing a 12 or 16 GB physical RAM
- 1:22chip on a phone board costs a lot of
- 1:25money, between the silicon, circuit
- 1:27design, and data bus. Conversely,
- 1:31adding a line of code to the OS to tell
- 1:33Android to use a piece of your storage
- 1:35as if it were RAM costs the
- 1:37manufacturer exactly $ 0. And it looks
- 1:41great in store listings to show a
- 1:43massive number so that anyone who
- 1:45doesn't know tech thinks they're
- 1:47getting a high-end device at a low
- 1:48price. And the problem is that it does
- 1:51matter, yet no brand will explain this
- 1:53in their advertising. Your phone’s
- 1:56physical RAM works like a clean
- 1:57workbench right next to the processor.
- 2:01It is absurdly fast, transfers tens of
- 2:03gigabytes per second, and has almost
- 2:05zero latency. Its only job is to feed
- 2:08the processor whatever you are doing at
- 2:10that exact millisecond. On the other
- 2:13hand, the internal storage where you
- 2:15keep your photos, videos, and games,
- 2:18even if it is modern UFS memory, is
- 2:20infinitely slower. And if you have a
- 2:23mid-range or budget phone with eMMC
- 2:25memory, the difference is an abyss of
- 2:27slowness. Using storage as RAM is like
- 2:31having a tiny desk, and instead of
- 2:33putting your papers on it, you keep
- 2:35them in a storage unit three blocks
- 2:37away from your house. Every time you
- 2:41switch apps or open a heavy tab, the
- 2:43processor has to slam on the brakes,
- 2:45pause its work, go to the slow storage
- 2:47to find that data, and load it back.
- 2:51That millisecond of waiting while the
- 2:52chip freezes for the disk is exactly
- 2:54the stutter you feel under your finger
- 2:56when scrolling through Instagram.
- 2:59It’s the keyboard that takes forever
- 3:01to pop up when you tap the text bar or
- 3:02the screen that freezes completely
- 3:04black when you try to take a quick
- 3:06photo. You’ve created a bottleneck
- 3:08for your processor because of a feature
- 3:10that was supposed to speed it up. And
- 3:12things get worse when you look at what
- 3:15happens to the hardware on the inside
- 3:17over the months. Physical RAM is
- 3:19designed to be written, erased, and
- 3:21overwritten billions of times without
- 3:23suffering any wear. It can work at full
- 3:27speed for 10 years and it won't break.
- 3:31Internal storage memory doesn't work
- 3:33that way. They have a limited number of
- 3:36write cycles before their silicon cells
- 3:38start to corrupt and fail. With virtual
- 3:42RAM enabled, your operating system is
- 3:44dumping and erasing heavy blocks of
- 3:47data onto your phone's storage 24/7 in
- 3:49the background. Not only are you making
- 3:53your phone less responsive, but you're
- 3:55also aging it faster, and completely
- 3:57unnecessarily at that. When that memory
- 4:00starts to fail from excessive writing,
- 4:02the phone starts randomly rebooting or
- 4:04simply won't turn on again. Let's turn
- 4:07this off right now, live. I’ll show
- 4:10you the exact path for the three main
- 4:12brands, because each manufacturer has
- 4:14hidden the switch in different menus
- 4:16with different names so you won't find
- 4:18it easily. If you have a Samsung phone
- 4:21with OneUI, go to Settings, scroll down
- 4:23to Device Care, tap on the Memory
- 4:24section, and at the very bottom, you'll
- 4:26see the option called RAM Plus. Enter
- 4:30it, turn off the main switch at the top
- 4:32right, and a window will pop up warning
- 4:33you that the phone needs to restart.
- 4:36Hit restart and you’re all set. If
- 4:40you're on a Xiaomi, Redmi, or Poco with
- 4:42HyperOS or MIUI, go to System Settings,
- 4:44look for the Additional Settings
- 4:45section, scroll down to Memory
- 4:47Extension, and select the disable
- 4:49option. Just like with Samsung, the
- 4:52system will ask for a mandatory restart
- 4:54to rebuild the boot files. On Motorola,
- 4:56Realme, OnePlus, or vivo phones, the
- 4:59path is almost identical. Go into
- 5:01settings, use the search bar at the top
- 5:03, and type the word RAM. Enter the
- 5:06dynamic RAM or RAM expansion section,
- 5:08turn off the toggle, and confirm the
- 5:10restart. Now that your phone is back on
- 5:12, open the app drawer, open three or
- 5:14four common apps, and start switching
- 5:17between them using multitasking
- 5:18gestures. I’m not going to sell you
- 5:21that your € 200 phone now performs
- 5:22like a € 1,000 one. The difference is
- 5:25that you’ve removed the artificial
- 5:27bottleneck that the manufacturer’s
- 5:29own marketing department forced onto
- 5:31your hardware. Transitions between
- 5:33menus are smooth again. The physical
- 5:36RAM does its job at its native speed,
- 5:38and your internal storage stops
- 5:40suffering from junk background writes.
- 5:42Okay, but does this feature make sense
- 5:44in any real-world scenario? Why is it
- 5:47enabled by default? It makes sense in
- 5:49only one case. If you have a 6-year-old
- 5:52phone with 2 GB of physical RAM that
- 5:54literally crashes and closes apps the
- 5:56moment you try to open Google Maps or a
- 5:58banking app, then it makes sense. In
- 6:01that extreme case of necessity, the
- 6:03swap file—which is what this virtual
- 6:06memory extension is called—prevents
- 6:08the system from crashing, even if it
- 6:10crawls along. But if your phone has 4,
- 6:136, 8, or 12 GB of physical RAM, virtual
- 6:15RAM is poison wrapped in cheap
- 6:17advertising. Turn off the switch, stick
- 6:21to your phone's real speed, and don't
- 6:22let them sell you inflated numbers on a
- 6:24box.
