- 0:00This dad's daughter came home crying
- 0:01with an F because her teacher doesn't
- 0:02know what color blood is. The first time
- 0:04he realized something was wrong, his
- 0:06daughter came home from school holding
- 0:07out her arm. "Look, Dad, you can see the
- 0:09blue blood in my veins right here." She
- 0:10traced the blue lines under her skin
- 0:12with her finger. He put down his coffee
- 0:13and looked at her. "Actually,
- 0:15sweetheart, that's not true. Blood is
- 0:16always red because of hemoglobin. It's
- 0:18just darker red in your veins." Her face
- 0:20scrunched up. "But Mrs. Miller showed us
- 0:21a whole PowerPoint about it. She even
- 0:23had diagrams from a science book." The
- 0:24next morning, he packed his work scrubs
- 0:26in his bag. He's an ER nurse at Mercy
- 0:28General and he was working the afternoon
- 0:30shift anyway. He sent Mrs. Miller an
- 0:31email asking if he could do a quick
- 0:33presentation about blood for career day
- 0:34that afternoon. She loved the idea. When
- 0:36he arrived, Mrs. Miller introduced him
- 0:38as his daughter's dad who works at the
- 0:39hospital. 28 kids stared up at him from
- 0:41their desks. "I heard you guys learned
- 0:42that blood is blue inside your body," he
- 0:44said. The entire class nodded
- 0:46enthusiastically. Mrs. Miller beamed
- 0:47from her desk in the corner. He pulled
- 0:49out a blood collection tube from his
- 0:50pocket and held it up. "This is what we
- 0:52use to draw blood at the hospital.
- 0:53Notice something? The tube creates a
- 0:54vacuum. No oxygen inside at all." He
- 0:57paused. "When we draw blood with these,
- 0:58it never touches oxygen until we pop the
- 1:00cap off." He showed them photos on his
- 1:02phone of sealed blood tubes. "See? Still
- 1:04red." Mrs. Miller's smile started
- 1:05fading. She shifted in her chair and
- 1:07cleared her throat. A boy raised his
- 1:08hand and pointed to their science
- 1:10textbook. "But our textbook says it's
- 1:11blue." He picked up the book and checked
- 1:13the publication date. 1998. "Medicine
- 1:15updates pretty fast. We used to think
- 1:17lots of things that turned out to be
- 1:18wrong." Mrs. Miller suddenly stood up
- 1:20from her desk, her hands gripping the
- 1:22edge. "Well, thank you for that
- 1:23interesting presentation, Mr. Johnson,
- 1:24but we need to move on to math now." He
- 1:26nodded and started packing when a girl
- 1:28in the back raised her hand. "So our
- 1:29textbook is wrong?" The class erupted in
- 1:31whispers. Mrs. Miller's jaw clenched and
- 1:33her voice got tight. "The curriculum
- 1:34says" "Actually," he interrupted,
- 1:36pulling up the state science standards
- 1:37on his phone. He walked over and turned
- 1:39his phone toward her. "The current
- 1:40curriculum specifically mentions this
- 1:42myth as something to correct." She
- 1:43stared at the screen and her eyes
- 1:44narrowed. Her mouth pressed into a thin
- 1:46line and her nostrils flared. "Can I
- 1:48speak with you in the hallway?" The kids
- 1:49watched as they walked out and the door
- 1:51closed behind them. "Do you have any
- 1:52idea how hard it is when parents
- 1:54undermine my authority?" Her face was
- 1:55red and her voice was sharp. Now,
- 1:57they'll question everything I say. He
- 1:59kept his voice calm. Isn't that exactly
- 2:01what we want them to do? Question things
- 2:02and learn critical thinking? She crossed
- 2:04her arms tightly. I've been teaching for
- 2:0522 years. I'm not changing my whole
- 2:07curriculum because some nurse thinks he
- 2:09knows better than our textbooks. The
- 2:10next day, he found out Mrs. Miller gave
- 2:12the class a pop quiz. His daughter came
- 2:13home crying, her face red and puffy. Her
- 2:16hands were shaking as she handed him a
- 2:17paper with a big red F on it. He took a
- 2:19deep breath and felt his jaw tighten as
- 2:21he looked at the question. What color is
- 2:23blood inside the body? His daughter had
- 2:24written red and Mrs. Miller had marked
- 2:26it wrong. He requested a meeting with
- 2:28Principal Davis and brought printouts of
- 2:29medical textbooks, the state science
- 2:31standards, and his daughter's quiz. The
- 2:33principal called in Mrs. Miller and
- 2:34asked her directly, is blood blue inside
- 2:36the body? After a long pause, Mrs.
- 2:38Miller said, it's what the children
- 2:39understand better. He leaned forward in
- 2:41his chair. My daughter is crying every
- 2:43morning before school because she's
- 2:44afraid of getting F's for writing down
- 2:45the truth. The next day, the school
- 2:47replaced their science books. Now,
- 2:48whenever his daughter learns something
- 2:50new at school, she comes home and asks
- 2:51him, Dad, is this actually true or is it
- 2:53just a Mrs. Miller truth?
