Her Hoof was NO MATCH for the ROCKS — Transcript

- 0:03Well, I think we've identified the
- 0:05problem, so let's go fix it. Welcome
- 0:08back
- 0:09to Nate the Hoof Guy.
- 0:21Whenever you come across these types of
- 0:22marks in the sole of a cow's hoof,
- 0:24you're pretty sure that it was caused by
- 0:26rocks.
- 0:34It didn't take long and I uncovered one
- 0:36with my grinder.
- 0:48While the carbides on my cutting wheel
- 0:49are pretty tough, you still don't want
- 0:51to hit too many rocks with them or
- 0:53you're going to end up with dull
- 0:54carbides.
- 1:03A mark like that means rocks and bubbles
- 1:06means it went all the way through.
- 1:10Take a little bit more of this down with
- 1:12the grinder and then we'll bring the
- 1:13knife out and get down to it.
- 1:30With the amount of bubbles that came out
- 1:31of there, that's telling me that there
- 1:33is quite the pocket up underneath this
- 1:35sole.
- 1:56Well, now we can see where all that
- 1:58fluid and all those bubbles came from.
- 2:11Well, this is quite a bit of sole that I
- 2:13had to take away so far. There's still
- 2:15quite a bit more to go yet.
- 2:17If you've ever wondered how long it
- 2:19takes for a sole like this to regrow,
- 2:21well, you're going to get to see in this
- 2:23video. We've got the follow-up included.
- 2:32So, now, even though I've mentioned it
- 2:34many times, it bears repeating. Trimming
- 2:36this hard outer layer of hoof horn
- 2:38doesn't hurt. It's just like trimming
- 2:40our fingernails. It's made out of the
- 2:42same material. There's no nerve endings,
- 2:44there's no sensitiv- sensitivity to
- 2:46that. When you get up below that, where
- 2:48that corium layer is, where the lesion
- 2:50itself is, that is painful, but I'm
- 2:52avoiding that area. I'm not touching it
- 2:55at all. So, I'm not going to trim any of
- 2:57that area out. I'm going to be very
- 2:58careful when I work around that. All I'm
- 3:00doing here is just trimming away this
- 3:02hard outer layer so I can get down to
- 3:04that and get that area cleaned out. It's
- 3:06that sensitive tissue up underneath
- 3:08there that needs to be clean and get get
- 3:11the bacteria taken care of so that it
- 3:13can start to produce new hoof horn
- 3:14again, which will completely replace the
- 3:17sole, which you're going to see in that
- 3:20follow-up.
- 3:22These little folds of hoof horn here,
- 3:25they're really soft. I'm going to take
- 3:27away some of these that are a little bit
- 3:28more that are a little bit loose, that
- 3:30are a little more thin. I'm going to
- 3:32trim those away, but I don't have to
- 3:34worry too much about them because only
- 3:36the hard hoof horn is what could impede
- 3:38the healing process if it were to affect
- 3:40that lesion. But, in this case, these
- 3:42are pretty soft, so I'm just going to,
- 3:44like I said, just trim away some of
- 3:45these loose ones that are really
- 3:46obvious. The rest I'm going to leave in
- 3:48place because I don't want to aggravate
- 3:50this anymore. I wanted to just trim away
- 3:53any of this hard horn and then get it
- 3:55nice and flushed out, treated with our
- 3:57salicylic acid, and get a block on that
- 3:59other claw. Then we're going to come
- 4:01back in a couple of weeks and show you
- 4:03exactly what happened after our
- 4:05treatment.
- 4:08We'll give this side a good spray down
- 4:10and we'll get that other claw prepped
- 4:12and ready for a block.
- 4:20I add a little bit of glue to the side
- 4:22of that claw just to give some more
- 4:23surface area for that glue to hold on
- 4:25to.
- 4:27Right in here, that's where that rock
- 4:28went through. That's the area I try to
- 4:30avoid when I'm working. I'm just going
- 4:31to take away any more of these little
- 4:33loose bits here and then we're going to
- 4:35get this sprayed down one more time, get
- 4:37that salicylic acid wrap in place.
- 4:52We're going to get this wrap in place
- 4:53and then we're going to fast forward
- 4:54just a couple of short weeks and see
- 4:56what it looks like then.
- 5:00All right, so here we are. Right in
- 5:02here, that's where those rocks went
- 5:03through. You can see there's a new layer
- 5:05of hoof horn pretty much all the way
- 5:07across this entire sole right now.
- 5:09You'll notice it's very dark in color.
- 5:11That's just staining. You'll notice as I
- 5:13trim that down, it's nice and white
- 5:15underneath, which is exactly what we
- 5:17want to see. Just going to work this
- 5:18down, get this all cleaned up and we'll
- 5:20take a good look at it.
- 5:26So whenever I do a recheck, what I'm
- 5:28looking to do is just make sure that
- 5:29everything is progressing as it should.
- 5:32I'm going to remove any loose hoof horn
- 5:33that I see
- 5:34uh at this next trim. What can happen is
- 5:38as this hoof horn starts to grow back,
- 5:40you can still get some more separation.
- 5:42You're never going to always get it all
- 5:45on that first try. Some more is going to
- 5:47separate just from the natural healing
- 5:49process. So, I just want to remove any
- 5:51of the loose bits around that. You can
- 5:53see there's a pretty good uh sole that's
- 5:56formed here in just a couple of short
- 5:58weeks. It's not terribly thick. I don't
- 6:00want to do too much work here because
- 6:02the goal is eventually to get that sole
- 6:04thick enough for her to walk on, right?
- 6:06So, I don't want to remove too much of
- 6:08this. I just want to clean up around the
- 6:10edges, make sure that everything is
- 6:11progressing just how I want it to.
- 6:25If you look at the very tip of this toe,
- 6:26you'll notice that it's lighter in color
- 6:29than the rest of that sole was before I
- 6:30started working on it. Why is that?
- 6:33Well, because that toe area, each time
- 6:35this she takes a step, that toe touches
- 6:37a little bit. So, it's going to wear
- 6:39down a little bit. The intensity of that
- 6:42staining is going to be much less
- 6:44because she's wearing a very thin amount
- 6:46of that off each time she takes a step.
- 6:49Now, in that heel area, where that the
- 6:51block was keeping that completely off
- 6:53the ground, that was able to get that
- 6:55really dark, intense staining because
- 6:58there was no wearing whatsoever.
- 7:00So, I'm doing here just cleaning up any
- 7:02of these edges. There's not a lot to
- 7:04take away now. It's pretty well cleaned
- 7:06up. We're going to get this treated one
- 7:08more time though, and then we're going
- 7:10to give her a little test drive, right?
- 7:12We're going to let her out. We're going
- 7:13to show you how uh she was walking after
- 7:14that first trim, and how she's walking
- 7:16now, and I think we can agree she's
- 7:18doing much better.
- 7:25Now, as far as the block goes, it's
- 7:27maintained its shape quite well. I don't
- 7:29need to replace that. It's doing its
- 7:31job. We're going to leave it on for a
- 7:32couple more weeks. Once again, we need
- 7:34this sole to get a little bit thicker
- 7:36before she can walk on it, right? It's
- 7:38healed in quite nicely, but we need that
- 7:40thicker to bear weight. Needs to be at
- 7:42least a quarter of an inch deep.
- 7:44So, we'll get this wrap on. We're going
- 7:46to let her go. Now, this is how she was
- 7:49a couple weeks ago. You can see
- 7:51still favoring it, but here now
- 7:54looking much better.
