- 0:00And I had picked it up, read it, and
- 0:02there were two things that really enti
- 0:05enticed me to research further. And that
- 0:08was when he said, "You can have anything
- 0:11you want provided you know what it is.
- 0:15See yourself as already having it." And
- 0:18those were three things that intrigued
- 0:21me. And uh I was, you know, just a
- 0:24little happy homemaker. No education,
- 0:27high school education period. and the
- 0:29mother of three and sitting home and
- 0:32needing a lot of little creature comfort
- 0:34things, you know. And so I thought,
- 0:37well, that sounds exciting. So that
- 0:39night, uh, my husband got in and I said,
- 0:42I read this book and I says, who would
- 0:45you like? And he was reading the Dallas
- 0:47Morning News and, uh, he said, well,
- 0:50look here. CocaCola has a contest and,
- 0:54uh, you can win an outboard motor. All
- 0:57you have to do is write 25 words while
- 1:00you take Coca-Cola on
- 1:02Audience. And I said and I then outboard
- 1:05motor. And then he went on and finished
- 1:08reading his paper. Well, I went into the
- 1:11bedroom and he's one outboard motor. So
- 1:15I sit there and I thought CocaCola on a
- 1:19ped. And I thought I don't we don't even
- 1:22drink Cokes. That's going to be a tough
- 1:25one. But I saw him sitting in a boat
- 1:30with his motor enjoying himself. And so
- 1:34I wrote
- 1:36uh oh, he liked to go fishing by himself
- 1:39on weekends because he had a very
- 1:42serious job and he was always stretched
- 1:45out and the kids were too young to take
- 1:47him fishing at that point. And so he'd
- 1:50go out for the afternoon. Okay. So now
- 1:53I'm sitting there and I see him in this
- 1:55boat and I write, "I'm a lone wolf
- 2:00fisherman. Cokes are my silent partners.
- 2:05They contribute no yakity yak. Only
- 2:08enjoyment when called upon." 25 words,
- 2:13put it in an envelope, mailed it off,
- 2:16and actually said to him, "I wonder how
- 2:20long it's going to take him to let us
- 2:22know we won." Now, that's positive
- 2:25thinking. I didn't know any better. I
- 2:28just knew uh he's got I wrote
- 2:31that incident. He's got to win it. Two
- 2:36weeks later, the representative from
- 2:39Coca-Cola called and said, "Uh, Mr.
- 2:42Hatel, you won your outboard motor." I
- 2:45thought, "Well, that's nice. Now, what
- 2:47would we like to win?" See, now what
- 2:50would we like to win? And my daughter
- 2:52said, "Well, I'd like it win bicycle."
- 2:56And I said, "And you want what color?"
- 2:58you know, I thought, well, everybody
- 3:00should do this because uh selected, you
- 3:04know, uh here it is. See herself is
- 3:06adding it. So we had her sitting on a
- 3:09bicycle and it was uh now at that point
- 3:13in time there were many many
- 3:16opportunities for contests and most of
- 3:19them see a contest is when you have to
- 3:22complete something in 25 words or less
- 3:25name something write an essay. A sweep
- 3:28stake is when they just put your name in
- 3:32the pot and they draw from one million
- 3:35entries they draw your name. Uh I didn't
- 3:39think of that as
- 3:41competition. I always thought the only
- 3:44competition you ever have is with
- 3:46yourself. That's when you doubt
- 3:48yourself.
- 3:49So now my daughter uh we had to name a
- 3:53pony and it got to be now this was a fun
- 3:57thing and my son I mean we didn't look
- 4:00for big things roller skates you know uh
- 4:04bicycles and uh things that were that
- 4:08children wanted um boom boxes you know
- 4:12for music and stuff and so we started uh
- 4:16he we s would sit at night and I says,
- 4:20"Oh, we're going to get Pamela her bic
- 4:22her bicycle and we have to name a pony.
- 4:26How are we going to name a pony?" And uh
- 4:29show them a picture of a pony. And uh
- 4:31they said, "Well, he's brown." And I
- 4:33said, "Yeah, he's brown." And what else?
- 4:36And uh what else does he do? Well, I
- 4:40said, "Does he prance?" And then we
- 4:43called him prance
- 4:45charming. Prance charming. And you get
- 4:48on a pony. What else? He bucks. He buck
- 4:51too prince charming. And these were what
- 4:54we call coined
- 4:56words. And that's what we send in. I
- 5:00don't know which entry one, but she had
- 5:02her swing
- 5:04bicycle. Okay. So we then we got all the
- 5:07little stuff. Now I want lenolium for
- 5:10the floor and I get lenolium. Then I
- 5:13want something else and I get it. Now
- 5:16I'm thinking
- 5:17bigger. Now I want to win trips. And my
- 5:21son, my younger son said, "Oh, let's go
- 5:24to a dude
- 5:25ranch." Do you know we won this trip to
- 5:29a dude ranch and stupid me? Uh this was
- 5:32in Arizona and that's when I was afraid
- 5:35of flying. And uh they I won the prize.
- 5:39They're going to fly. And I said, "I
- 5:41don't fly. Can you drive now?" And then
- 5:44I was I was I didn't get the prize
- 5:48because you had to follow their
- 5:50rules. And so that he was very very
- 5:55ticked about that. You have to learn to
- 5:58fly. You have to learn. Well, now the
- 6:00next thing I wanted children wanted to
- 6:02go to Disneyland. And that meant flying
- 6:05too. And I thought, well, I'll just
- 6:07brave it out. Really and truly, I was
- 6:10stupid on that area. But at that time I
- 6:13didn't know better. And so we get to um
- 6:16won this trip to Disneyland. We all get
- 6:20there and it was a fabulous fabulous
- 6:24trip and later on uh we we did win a
- 6:28trip to the dude ranch and I did go to
- 6:31we did go to the dude ranch and then we
- 6:34went a trip to the world's fair. did go
- 6:37to the World's Fair and one thing that
- 6:40was real funny, I was going to be 40
- 6:43years old and I had read that Paris is a
- 6:49city of light, love and
- 6:51excitement and I wanted to be on the 1st
- 6:55of January. I said, "What are we going
- 6:57to do this year?" And Pat said, "Well, I
- 7:01said, I want to be in Paris, France,
- 7:04sitting at a sidewalk cafe, drinking
- 7:08wine on my 40th
- 7:11birthday." And I started to enter
- 7:14contests, only contests that were
- 7:18offering trips. And there were many of
- 7:20them. There's a lot of trips, always a
- 7:23contest, always 25 words or less. And I
- 7:27always used the same 25
- 7:33words. I said, "I'm a poop couple with
- 7:37three kiddos, and I'd like to go to
- 7:39Paris, France to recapture the rapture
- 7:43of springtime ecstasy in my 40
- 7:47frustrated years." That's the only thing
- 7:50I wrote. Well, the first time uh one
- 7:54company uh investigates before you win a
- 7:58big prize, you're investigated. They
- 8:00call you or they come out interview you
- 8:03and they do that to find out if you are
- 8:06any way related to the sponsors anyway
- 8:09related because contesting are really on
- 8:13the up and up and if they wouldn't be I
- 8:16mean it wouldn't serve any purpose.
- 8:21So I had the interview and uh everything
- 8:25went fine but I only won third prize
- 8:28which a Hammond electric organ and it
- 8:32didn't win that prize and I said well
- 8:35why did they give me electric organ and
- 8:38you know somebody said to cultivate
- 8:42patience I have this big electric
- 8:45hammond organ and here it is now my
- 8:48birthday's the 1st of June June and here
- 8:50it is April already and I still haven't
- 8:54had this trip now. We're going to have
- 8:56to plan this trip. We're going to be
- 8:57there. Uh drinking wine and my husband
- 9:00even said, "Well, we have enough money.
- 9:02We'll I said, "No, I'm going to win this
- 9:04for the trip." Well, it seemed like the
- 9:07last minute I sent that entry off and lo
- 9:11and behold, I got a phone call and said,
- 9:15"Mr. had. So, I used his name and when I
- 9:19uh and my name uh you want a trip to uh
- 9:23Venice, Italy. And I thought, well, I
- 9:26don't want to I've been to Venice. I
- 9:28want to go to
- 9:29Paris. And the man said, "Well, you can
- 9:32change. There's first class and you can
- 9:34change whatever you want to do." And I
- 9:37he said, "When would you like the
- 9:39tickets?" I said, "Like right now." And
- 9:41he had a messenger come and bring these
- 9:44tickets. and we got on the plane and to
- 9:48make a long story short, on my 40th
- 9:51birthday, I was at that sidewalk with my
- 9:55husband drinking
- 9:57water. So, we did this. This is
- 10:00something else I need to bring up cuz I
- 10:02thought this was well, it it was nice.
- 10:07My husband and I are sitting here one
- 10:10afternoon and uh I just got back from a
- 10:13trip, a long trip and uh sometime he
- 10:16went with me and sometime he didn't and
- 10:19he'd go with me first time and then the
- 10:21second time he got bored because I was
- 10:24always counseling people and then at
- 10:26night I was in my and he knew
- 10:28everything. So, but anyway, we're
- 10:31sitting here. He said, "Let's do
- 10:33something off the let's do something
- 10:35exciting. what do you want to do? I
- 10:37said, you know, I love love New York. I
- 10:42said, and I noticed in the paper that
- 10:45they're having this um uh the best
- 10:48little wh house in Texas. And I said, I
- 10:52would love to go and see that off
- 10:55Broadway show. And he said, "Well, I'll
- 10:58tell you what. Let's uh I'll uh let's
- 11:01have lunch and I'll start calling uh the
- 11:04the airlines and we'll see what we can
- 11:07do. He says, "Sounds like fun, doesn't
- 11:09it?" We're eating lunch and we come back
- 11:12here for coffee and the phone
- 11:15rings. Mrs. Adsel, I said, "Yes." He
- 11:19said, "I'm Rich Little. You don't know
- 11:21him, but he was producing a show to tell
- 11:25the truth in New York." and he said,
- 11:28"Your name came up as a very, very good
- 11:32contestant. How would you like to come
- 11:34to New York and be on my show?" I
- 11:40said, I looked at Pat and I thought,
- 11:42"God, is this for real?" And I said,
- 11:45"What is it?" Um, he said, "Well, it's
- 11:47to tell the truth." And the show had
- 11:49just started. And uh, he said, "Um,
- 11:52we'll pay all your expenses first class.
- 11:55And what else do you want? And I said,
- 11:58could I have tickets to this off
- 12:00Broadway show? Will Success Ball Rock
- 12:03Hunts? And he said, "And what else?" And
- 12:05I said, "Well, my husband uh wanted to
- 12:07come." Well, okay. We'll do a tour.
- 12:09We'll give your husband a ticket also.
- 12:11And what else? I mean, you know, when
- 12:14they want you, they want you. And he
- 12:17said, "Everything that we advertise, you
- 12:20will also
- 12:21get electric blankets, mix, whatever
- 12:25they were
- 12:26advertising." I said, "When do you want
- 12:28me? When do you want?" He said, "Were
- 12:30you come this week or next week?" And I
- 12:32said, "Well, let's see." And my husband
- 12:34says, "This week. This week." So I said,
- 12:37"How about this week?" "Well, we'll have
- 12:39your tickets for you by currier uh
- 12:42tomorrow morning."
- 12:44So we went
- 12:46to New York had this hotel saw this
- 12:51Broadway play was there three days all
- 12:54ex they usually pay all expenses and
- 12:57they give you a voucher if you want to
- 12:59cab to go wherever you want to eat
- 13:02wherever you want to and entertain you
- 13:05really it's nice to be on these talk
- 13:06shows. Well, that's we had our
- 13:09little our little thing
- 13:12again. So, what is it? I mean, you know,
- 13:15there were many many instances where I
- 13:18would uh hear of something. Uh the thing
- 13:22I'm digressing, I'm sorry because you're
- 13:25interested in being a winner and all of
- 13:28you out there are winners. You know
- 13:30that. And you can have anything you want
- 13:33provided you know what it is. see
- 13:36yourself as having it. And if there's a
- 13:39delay in results, uh, don't be
- 13:42disappointed. Maybe you need to
- 13:44cultivate a little more patience. That's
- 13:46all it is. And it's yours. And you say,
- 13:50but the competition is so fierce. So
- 13:54fierce. And I says, everything is
- 13:57competition. How long? I mean,
- 14:00eventually if you stay with something
- 14:03long enough and strong enough, it's
- 14:05energy and it's got to come to you.
- 14:08That's the law of
- 14:09attraction. It's out there for anybody.
- 14:12I never looked at it as competition. I
- 14:16remember uh when after I had the
- 14:19publicity and had won that house in Los
- 14:22Kenus and had won all the cars and
- 14:25whatever I needed or wanted. Uh this was
- 14:27very interesting because that night we
- 14:30went to
- 14:32dance and we're dancing and uh right at
- 14:35the as you came in you signed in and
- 14:37they had this fishbowl put your name in
- 14:40at the end of the night they had fruit
- 14:42cakes because it was Christmas time and
- 14:45uh they had this big boom box and my
- 14:48daughter had been wanting this huge boom
- 14:51box that had all these acoustics and
- 14:54things out and I looked at it and I
- 14:57said, "Oh, there's Pamela's Christmas
- 14:59present." Well, the woman that was um uh
- 15:03taking the tickets, her overheard me and
- 15:06uh she laughed and she said, "Well, Mrs.
- 15:09Hatel's here." So, really and truly, you
- 15:12it's stupid to put your name in the
- 15:14Hatel's one, the boom box already. All
- 15:17right. What did I do? They were giving
- 15:19me their energy.
- 15:21Everybody in that room gave the energy
- 15:24because they knew now we've won this
- 15:26house and we're dancing and this man
- 15:29said, "I guess she's got" and Pat said,
- 15:32"She's got the boom box." And we're
- 15:34they're making a joke of it, a joke. And
- 15:37they don't know that I didn't take their
- 15:40energy. They gave it to me. And that
- 15:42night when his boss, now it's time to
- 15:46take to have the drawing. And here's
- 15:49that fishbowl full of of names. And the
- 15:53boss said, "I'm g not gonna have
- 15:56anything to do with this. Somebody come
- 15:58up and draw a name." And a woman came up
- 16:02and she said, "I'll get a different
- 16:04name." And she whisked around and
- 16:07whisked around and pulled a name and it
- 16:09was my
- 16:10name. Okay. This is energy. This is
- 16:14energy. This is what they do. And yes,
- 16:18you can get energy from someone else if
- 16:21they're negative. I mean, why not? You
- 16:24mentioned the house. Can you tell us
- 16:25more about how you won the house? Yes.
- 16:27Yes. Yes. I came back after my trip. And
- 16:31in Dallas, we have a group of women that
- 16:35get together and we call them the
- 16:37contest. We call them the range
- 16:40writers. And uh when we got there, uh we
- 16:44would swap entry blanks. We would stand
- 16:47up and say what we won this month. We
- 16:49won this and this and this and this. One
- 16:51month I won a prize every day. 30
- 16:54prizes. One prize every day. Some of
- 16:57them would win four or five of them and
- 17:00we had a lot of fun and they were very
- 17:02supportive. So the night I got there, uh
- 17:06the woman, one of the women said, "Oh,
- 17:08you won the world's uh you went to uh
- 17:10New York on your way to Paris. Did you
- 17:13stop at the World's Fair?" And I said,
- 17:15"Yeah, my son went a trip to the World's
- 17:17Fair." So, he was with us. And then
- 17:21after the trip, we were at the World's
- 17:23Fair, he went back home on a plane and
- 17:26someone met him and so forth. And we
- 17:28went on to Paris. And she said, "While
- 17:31you were there, did you see that for
- 17:33mica house?" She said, "That's a uh
- 17:36that's an entire United States contest.
- 17:40And for Micah is having a new product
- 17:43that they're sponsoring and they're
- 17:45going to build a house someplace in the
- 17:47United States. And all you have to do
- 17:51throughout the United States, the
- 17:53builders were you building their houses,
- 17:56but they were using this molding that
- 18:00for Micah was very very proud of using.
- 18:03So, anybody throughout the United
- 18:06States, you had to visit one of the
- 18:09homes that had these entry blanks that
- 18:12were using for Micah. Well, in my area,
- 18:16it was Garland, the only place that was
- 18:20had this thing. And she said, "Well, you
- 18:22can enter." I said, "No, I didn't know
- 18:24about it. I didn't know about it." Well,
- 18:26it's in Garland and it's closing next
- 18:29week.
- 18:30And so on the way home, uh, driving
- 18:33home, because Dallas is, uh, 27 miles
- 18:36from Irving, rather, all I could think
- 18:39about was, "God, I'd like to win a new
- 18:42house. That's perfect. Yeah, I think
- 18:44I'll win that
- 18:46house." So the next
- 18:48day it's drizzling and one of two of my
- 18:52friends that that were in this contest
- 18:55club with me live in Irving. So I called
- 18:58one of them and I said let's go over and
- 19:00see that for Micah house and enter and
- 19:04she said oh she said you know they've
- 19:06already picked the entries it's in New
- 19:08York and they've already picked the
- 19:10entries and she said no and the other
- 19:13one was having her rug shampoo she
- 19:16couldn't go and I tried I said I'll even
- 19:19buy you a pizza on the way let's go and
- 19:23nobody would go with me starting to
- 19:25drizzle rain And I something I swear
- 19:29something pulled actually pulled me out.
- 19:32The next thing I knew I'm in the car
- 19:35driving 53
- 19:37miles to go to that for the house. And
- 19:42when I got there, I sat in one of the
- 19:45chairs and I looked at everything around
- 19:48there. And I'm already deciding that I
- 19:52want Spanish furniture.
- 19:55I'm already building the inside of the
- 19:57house and there wasn't anybody there
- 20:00except the woman that sat, you know, at
- 20:02the open house. I registered my name and
- 20:07I registered Pat's name and I took an
- 20:10entry blank home and that night I'm
- 20:14reading the entry blank and it said,
- 20:16"You must have visited the home." And I
- 20:20said, "Oh my god." I said I put in Pat's
- 20:24name and
- 20:27Patreon. Do you know that Saturday
- 20:31morning Pat got up and I said, "We're
- 20:34getting in the car. You're driving to
- 20:38darling and you're going to look at that
- 20:41house." So when they call you, you can
- 20:44say you visited that. He did. He
- 20:48did. He got to work. He believed what I
- 20:51said. We drove all that way so he could
- 20:55look at that house and that was it. It
- 20:58was a done deal. Now we come home and he
- 21:01draws the plans for the
- 21:04house and he tells the kids, "Uh, mama's
- 21:07going to win us this big
- 21:09house. Where do we want it? We're out
- 21:13looking for lots. We've got the plan
- 21:16here so when they come we can be ready."
- 21:20And then uh then it was a month now. The
- 21:23contest closed that
- 21:25weekend. It was a month later when uh
- 21:30somebody on the phone called uh Pat and
- 21:33I'm in Dallas and they called Pat and
- 21:37they asked Pat, "Is Mrs. Hansel there?"
- 21:39"No, she's at a meeting." Uh your
- 21:42husband? He said, "Yes." He said, "Did
- 21:45she enter that? I mean, did she go to
- 21:47that Flamco home?" And Pat said, "Oh, we
- 21:51were both there. I am so
- 21:55impressed with that laminated from
- 21:58Micah. We were so impressed." And he
- 22:02said the right thing. And that was it.
- 22:04And he said, "Um, well," he said, "We're
- 22:07just checking, uh, everybody to see if
- 22:09they actually did go and there's nothing
- 22:12here. Thank you, Mr. Hadel, for your
- 22:13time." That was all he said. All he Oh,
- 22:17he asked um are you related uh to
- 22:20anybody at the house? Number one. Number
- 22:23two, any relations that work for for
- 22:25Mike? Those were questions. So they had
- 22:28he was on the phone 5 minutes answering
- 22:30all this. And he was he knew that
- 22:33because we knew when we got a big prize,
- 22:36we'd have to have an investigation. We
- 22:38call him. And so uh I came home that
- 22:42night and he was ecstatic. Well, we want
- 22:44our house and all we did was I wonder
- 22:48how long it's going to take them to let
- 22:51us know we won. And that's all I told
- 22:54the kids. And so it was about another
- 22:58month
- 22:59later morning I woke up and I said, uh,
- 23:02the kids were at breakfast, the two boys
- 23:05were still there and my daughter was in
- 23:07college. And I said, "Uh, well, listen.
- 23:11They're going to let us know we won this
- 23:13house. For God's sake, act surprised."
- 23:17And they went off to
- 23:19school. And my husband said, "Are you
- 23:21sure they're coming?" I said, "Yeah."
- 23:23And he was I said, "Just stay in bed."
- 23:26And I says, "Pretend just uh we're just
- 23:29going to wait for them." Well, at 2:00
- 23:32and now it's 1:00 and they're and I went
- 23:35to the bakery to get some bakery and I'm
- 23:39getting ready to put the coffee pot on
- 23:40when they come and nothing happens and
- 23:43about 2:30 I get this phone call and
- 23:47they say um uh m Mrs. Hadel uh when does
- 23:51your husband get off work? And I said,
- 23:54well, he's here now. Uh oh, he they were
- 23:58waiting for him to get off work so they
- 24:00could tell us together. I said, "Well,
- 24:02he's here." Uh, what is And I said, "He
- 24:04just took the day off." Well, then we're
- 24:07coming right out. We're representatives,
- 24:10vice president of for Micah and our um
- 24:14PR man. Uh, we want to come out and tell
- 24:18you something very, very interesting for
- 24:21you. And I thought, "Yeah, yeah."
- 24:24So, and then I of course reminded Pat to
- 24:28act surprised. You know, they came in
- 24:31the
- 24:32door. I did. I acted surp Oh my god. Oh
- 24:35no, not me. Oh no, no. And I see I told
- 24:38Pat, don't show him the plans. So we're
- 24:42talking and he said, "Well, where do you
- 24:45want it?" And I said, "Well, there's a
- 24:47new area, you know, just" and I said,
- 24:50"And we have the plans." And uh the guy
- 24:54looked at me and I said, "Well, we were
- 24:57planning we were planning on building a
- 25:00house, but we didn't tell him that they
- 25:03were going to pay for it, you know." And
- 25:05so, uh, we had all the plans there and
- 25:08he couldn't believe it, you know, and I
- 25:10said, "Yeah, we we we had plans of
- 25:13enlarging this place." And that's how it
- 25:16came
- 25:17about. And from that period on they
- 25:20hired an interior decorator. Uh they
- 25:24hired so many people because it was
- 25:28publicity for their for
- 25:30mica. Uh they would call me, they send
- 25:34me flowers. Uh one weekend he'd always
- 25:37call and say, "Are you happy? Are you
- 25:40happy?" Uh because at that time the
- 25:43national inquir which is at rag magazine
- 25:47called and said if there's any negative
- 25:50things because this is the first time a
- 25:53house had ever been given. If there's
- 25:55any negative things tell us and we'll
- 25:58pay you for the negative. And I says get
- 26:01them real and hung up. And I had that
- 26:05offer two, three times and they were
- 26:07aware that they were looking for
- 26:09negative things. And I I there weren't
- 26:12any negative. But he'd call up and say,
- 26:14"Are you happy? Is there anything we can
- 26:16do?" And every time they came, they
- 26:18whined us and dined us at the best best
- 26:21hotels. And so one day he called and he
- 26:25said, "What's your favorite place?" And
- 26:26they were building and he kept coming
- 26:28and visiting, bringing me candy,
- 26:31flowers, and so forth. And I said, "God,
- 26:33would I like to go to New York?" "Okay,
- 26:36we'll put we'll send you to New York."
- 26:39And they brought us first class tickets.
- 26:42My husband and I went to New York. And
- 26:44we had there were at that time the play
- 26:47was on
- 26:49Broadway. Will success spoil Rock
- 26:52Hunter? That was the play I wanted to
- 26:55see. And they sent me to New York. And
- 26:58while I was in New York, I did a lot of
- 27:01publicity with uh one of the magazines
- 27:04uh the Good Housekeeping magazine and
- 27:07they interviewed me and so forth. And
- 27:09then they had the house open for a month
- 27:12where they could uh people came in and
- 27:15um I was just the hostess and they had
- 27:18people there that took care cleaning the
- 27:21house and so forth and then it was
- 27:22turned over to us officially. Gold keys.
- 27:26We had a gold key my husband and I were
- 27:29given a gold key and uh then he asked
- 27:34listen that's a big at that time that
- 27:37period in the four 50s60s rather uh
- 27:42income tax was a big challenge if you
- 27:44want a lump sum and you had to pay it
- 27:46right away and he said if income tax is
- 27:49a problem we'll take care of it you know
- 27:54I mean they couldn't couldn't do enough.
- 27:56They couldn't do enough. That was a
- 27:59[Music]
- 28:06fabulous. Well, the immediate family, my
- 28:09children, uh were now growing up and uh
- 28:13my son wanted a Corvette, which he got
- 28:15on his incidentally got on his own. Uh
- 28:19but one thing that uh I had never well
- 28:22it was like I said uh when I before I
- 28:26won the house, we lived in a a very
- 28:29comfortable place and I continually
- 28:32wanted to redecorate like I wanted a
- 28:34stove and I projected for a stove and
- 28:39all of a sudden uh the contest was over
- 28:42with and I won $1,000. I didn't win
- 28:46$1,000. I didn't win the stove and I
- 28:48went to the contest club and everybody
- 28:51had won in this particular contest and I
- 28:54had such good entries and I couldn't
- 28:57understand why I didn't win my stove and
- 29:01so I I thought everybody won televisions
- 29:04and everything and I was perplexed on
- 29:07this but two days later I won $1,000 in
- 29:10another contest and so I rationalized
- 29:14and I told the children Well, this is
- 29:17for my stove. I have $1,000 and I
- 29:20thought it was coming by a stove and
- 29:22this is my pot prize. I went out and
- 29:26bought a stove at
- 29:29Sears. Three days later, I have a phone
- 29:32call from this uh uh General Electric
- 29:36and said, "Uh, we overlooked um telling
- 29:40you, Mrs. had the prize and it it'll
- 29:43come in the mail and it you won a stove,
- 29:46a GE stove. And I said, "Oh, I already
- 29:50bought one." And uh he said, "Well, if
- 29:52you'd bought a GE, we would have given
- 29:54you your money back." But see, I got
- 29:57premature and already so this was
- 30:01something I learned uh later on. uh
- 30:05always I mean there can be a delay in
- 30:07results and yes I taught the children uh
- 30:12they were on their own and did their own
- 30:14coloring and they had their own projects
- 30:17and we were all very very supportive of
- 30:21that later on uh there were always
- 30:24people that would call or come and
- 30:28that's when I was prompted to write the
- 30:31book I wrote the book simply because
- 30:35there was a demand for it and I thought
- 30:37well maybe they'll leave me alone. I'm
- 30:39not a witch and on the book I put
- 30:44wishcraft in order to uh tell them that
- 30:47I was not using anything but you still
- 30:50had people that would call and say hey
- 30:53you already won oh we want three ammon
- 30:56organs this is a church and uh can you
- 30:59do donate one? Yes, I donated them all
- 31:03to different areas. There were things
- 31:05that I mean, you know, I didn't put in
- 31:08my book. What kind of contest did your
- 31:10children enter and how young were they
- 31:11when they started? Uh my younger son, um
- 31:16the one uh this is my teenager. He was a
- 31:19teenager and he's getting ready to go to
- 31:22college and there were lots of things
- 31:25that he wanted and this contest
- 31:28sponsored for teenagers write in 50
- 31:32words or less. Uh oh, this was another
- 31:36one my older son 50 words or less uh why
- 31:40you would like to
- 31:42represent the United States in Europe.
- 31:46and he wrote the most fabulous
- 31:49essay. It was really really it was very
- 31:53touching and very good and he won his
- 31:56trip to Europe and toured Europe. The
- 31:59other son was a little more uh
- 32:03materialistic and uh this was an
- 32:06opportunity uh and he was just getting
- 32:08out going to high school now. Uh this
- 32:11was an opportunity to go to New York and
- 32:15to you had to design a piece of jewelry
- 32:18and you had to be a
- 32:20teenager 12 to 14. Uh the prize would be
- 32:25uh this um diamond ring a trip to New
- 32:29York. Uh you would go to this um
- 32:33fabulous place. Uh I'm not interested in
- 32:37names of uh people uh you know houses
- 32:41that uh have um clothing manufactured. I
- 32:46don't even reme recall the name but he
- 32:48did and where you would pick out your
- 32:51wardrobe. He could pick out his
- 32:53wardrobe. He would get a Lindy Star
- 32:56Sapphire. He'd get a gold wrist watch.
- 32:59three days and I think it was
- 33:03$2,000 in cash plus the mother could
- 33:07come with him. Okay. He wanted that.
- 33:10Okay. So, he goes out. I said, "What are
- 33:13you going to do?" He said, "Well, uh,
- 33:15the first thing you think of as a kid
- 33:18and everybody then was having a guitar
- 33:21and imitating all these country
- 33:23westerns." And he says, "The first thing
- 33:25they do, they did they think of a guitar
- 33:28and they, you know, uh, make it as a
- 33:31guitar." And I said, "Well, what's the
- 33:34other thing?" He said, "Well," and he
- 33:37thought and he thought, he says, "I
- 33:39think I've got
- 33:40it." And he he just picked up a piece of
- 33:44sheet music and there's a staff there
- 33:47and there's notes. And so he went out
- 33:50into the garage and uh got the little
- 33:53wire, made the bend the wire, uh the the
- 33:59kind of wire that you use for soldering
- 34:02stuff, and made a staff. And then he
- 34:06took two of my
- 34:08beams and sprayed them. And he called it
- 34:12the Lindy Star
- 34:14Go. And that was advertising Lindy Star
- 34:17Sapphires. And it was so damn original.
- 34:20Who could possibly think of that? And
- 34:24then he did a step further further. He
- 34:26said, uh, he made it. He actually made
- 34:29it. And I said, well, while you made it,
- 34:31I said, why don't you send it to him
- 34:33with your entry, you know, he's seeing
- 34:36something that's he got a little bo box
- 34:39and mounts this thing in. And it was
- 34:41lovely. Really and put it and send it
- 34:44in.
- 34:46I wonder how long it's going to take him
- 34:48to let us know I want all this
- 34:50stuff. So, one day it was u I was
- 34:55sitting there and this morning I woke up
- 34:57and I says they're going to call us
- 34:59today. Got to be here and he was playing
- 35:02little league and he needed tennis shoes
- 35:05and he said, "I've got to get tennis
- 35:07shoes before the game is at 5:00." I
- 35:11said, "Well, we'll go as soon as they
- 35:12call us." And I was waiting in the mail
- 35:15or call us or in the mail. Nothing came
- 35:17in the mail and I'm sitting there and he
- 35:21was the one that used to say you don't
- 35:23know
- 35:24everything. Uh later on he changed it.
- 35:28When my husband said but she does know
- 35:30and so from that period on but you don't
- 35:33know everything you'd get angry because
- 35:35this is a teenager. And so we're um I
- 35:40said at four o'clock now he has to be at
- 35:42little league at 5 and I thought well I
- 35:45missed that one. How could I miss that
- 35:47one? When you have a feeling there's a
- 35:50knowing feeling. Uh there's a calm
- 35:54feeling and it's not like this you know
- 35:57like when you're waiting to have your
- 35:58name drawn at a someplace. It's a
- 36:02different feeling. And I had this calm
- 36:04feeling. And so we get in the car and
- 36:07he's in the car and the phone rings. I
- 36:10had the door openings and I said, "Go in
- 36:12there and answer. Tell him you're a boy.
- 36:14Tell him you're a boy." And his name is
- 36:17Chris. He went in there and the man, who
- 36:21am I talking to? Uh, this is Chris
- 36:23Hadel. He said, "Uh, are you a boy or a
- 36:26girl?" He says, "I'm all boy." And they
- 36:28hung up the phone and that was it. That
- 36:31was it. what they had done in New York.
- 36:35They were giving a prize, top prize to
- 36:38one girl and one boy. And when they
- 36:42looked at Chris's name, they thought
- 36:44this might be a girl. So, we got to find
- 36:47out. And when I was able to visit when
- 36:52we went to New York, uh the uh
- 36:56the people that judged the judges were
- 36:59there and took us out to dinner because
- 37:00they wanted to meet the two top winners,
- 37:03the girl and the boy. Uh the one girl,
- 37:06the one woman that was a judge called me
- 37:08aside and she said, "We had so much
- 37:12great
- 37:13difficulty deciding on Chris and another
- 37:17boy, Michael or whatever." We knew
- 37:20Michael was a boy, but she said, "I
- 37:22wanted Chris to win." And these guys
- 37:25already said, "Let's give it to Michael
- 37:27because he's a boy. Let's get out of
- 37:28here." And she said, "I will do that on
- 37:32one condition. if you call Texas and if
- 37:36Chris is a boy, will you give this to
- 37:39Chris? And that's what happened. One of
- 37:42the one of the judges called and it was
- 37:45Chris and that's how it then another
- 37:47time that was, you know, sometimes it's
- 37:50real close. Another time this younger
- 37:53son said, "Well, mother, you want all
- 37:55these things, but you never want a car."
- 37:58And I said, "I don't need a car. I was
- 38:00driving a Lincoln. I don't need a car,
- 38:03but just prove to me that you can win a
- 38:06car. And you don't need ever need to
- 38:08prove anything. Uh when you're taking a
- 38:12silver training, don't Jose says, don't
- 38:15ever prove anything. Prove it to
- 38:17yourself. And so I thought, well, okay,
- 38:20I never won a car. Let's do this. And a
- 38:24local radio station was having a car and
- 38:27they were giving Dodson's away. Okay.
- 38:31All you had to do was get by the phone
- 38:34and at random they would choose your
- 38:37name. And when they would call you, you
- 38:41would have to say, "My favorite radio
- 38:44station is K L I N." That's all you had
- 38:48to do. And if you said that, then your
- 38:51name would be in a pot. And at the end
- 38:54of six weeks, they would draw one name a
- 38:58week. And at the end of six weeks, you
- 39:01were in the pot and then you'd go to the
- 39:04dealership and then you would draw which
- 39:06car you would win. So it was a very you
- 39:10had to listen to that radio all day long
- 39:14because you never knew when they were
- 39:16going to call you. You just so you had
- 39:19to stay home and at that time there
- 39:21weren't cell phones. And so I was um the
- 39:26first week I listened all week long and
- 39:29they called the name and the man up and
- 39:32of course they would put it over the
- 39:34telephone uh Mr. Hammond so and so from
- 39:37from Grapvine. Uh what is your favorite
- 39:40radio station? He k 1190 on the dial.
- 39:44Well, you're in the drawing now. You've
- 39:46won that. You knew you won a car when he
- 39:48said that. Well, the second week, it was
- 39:52in the second week. I'm listening. And
- 39:55it was a Friday afternoon and we had
- 39:58rental property and my husband is out
- 40:01there fixing some of the water plumbing
- 40:04that was leaking and the children were
- 40:07around and so he called me and said he
- 40:09needed one wrench to help with this. But
- 40:14he couldn't go to get it because these
- 40:16children are out there and he had a hole
- 40:18and he was concerned about the children
- 40:21get that part. And I said, "No, I can't
- 40:24because I'm they're going to call me
- 40:26today. I know they're going to call me
- 40:28and I can't leave the house." He said,
- 40:31"Damn it, put them on hold. I need that
- 40:33part now. Get that part." He was very
- 40:36angry. So, I got in the car and I have
- 40:40the radio on in the car and I'm uh
- 40:43getting his part and I had to run all
- 40:45over town because this park it was some
- 40:49kind of a wrench. Finally got it. took
- 40:52it out to where he was working, threw it
- 40:55down and ran come wrecked the house. But
- 40:58on the radio station, I'm listening and
- 41:00they said, "We have the second week
- 41:03winner and during the break we will uh
- 41:07play it for you." And I am
- 41:11devastated. How could that happen? I
- 41:15thought I knew I had that
- 41:19car. And I come home and I am so
- 41:22disappointed in sitting there and he he
- 41:26caused that because I know they called
- 41:28me and damn it and I'm angry
- 41:30really. Few minutes the radio the
- 41:33station I mean telephone rang. It's my
- 41:36older son the one that left and only
- 41:40comes back and brings his dirty laundry
- 41:42and checks his mail. And he he called he
- 41:46says mother where were you? I said, "I
- 41:48was out getting daddy a a part for some
- 41:52of the plumbing." He said, "While you
- 41:54were gone," he said, "The phone rang and
- 41:58uh uh there they asked uh who is uh what
- 42:02is they just said, Mrs. Hatel, what is
- 42:05your favorite radio station?" And uh you
- 42:09had I had tacked up around the house
- 42:12because I thought if my husband calls,
- 42:14he's not into this. I said, "When they
- 42:18call and ask what your favorite station
- 42:22is, say KIF1190 on your dial is your
- 42:25favorite." And he there's the phone in
- 42:28the kitchen and he looks up and it said,
- 42:31"When they call and he read, oh, my
- 42:34mother's favorite radio station is KIF
- 42:38119." And the man says,
- 42:40"Congratulations, you just won your
- 42:42mother a dots.
