1:13yes norman vincent peale had the book
1:18called the power of positive thinking
1:21and i had picked it up read it and there
1:25were two things that really enticed me
1:29to research further and that was when
1:32you said you can have anything you want
1:37see yourself as an advocate and those
1:41were three things that intrigued me and
1:44I was you know just a little happy
1:47homemaker no education high school
1:50education period and the mother of three
1:53in sitting room and needing a lot a
1:55little creature comfort things you know
1:57and so I thought wrong that sounds
2:00exciting so that night my husband got in
2:04at night I read this book and I said
2:07what would you like and he was reading
2:09the Dallas Morning News
2:11and he said well looky here coca-cola
2:14has a contest and you can win an
2:18outboard motor all you have to do is
2:20write 25 words while you take coca-cola
2:24on audience and I said a nice and then
2:28outboard motor and then went on and
2:29finished reading his paper well I went
2:33into the bedroom and he's won an
2:36outboard motor so I sit there and I
2:39thought coca-cola on head and
2:44I don't think we don't even drink cokes
2:46that's gonna be a tough one but I saw
2:49him sitting in a boat with this motor
2:54enjoying himself and so I wrote or he
2:59liked to go fishing by himself on
3:02weekends cuz he had a very serious job
3:05and it was always stretched out and the
3:08kids were too young to take him fishing
3:10at that point and so he'd go out for the
3:13afternoon okay so now I'm sitting there
3:17and I see him in this boat and I write I
3:20am a lone wolf fisherman folks are my
3:25silent partners they contribute note yet
3:29did he get only enjoy twenty-five words
3:35put it in an envelope mailed it off and
3:39actually said to him I wonder how long
3:42it's going to take him to let us know
3:46now that's positive thinking I didn't
3:49know any better
3:50I just knew he's got I wrote that mr.
3:54ruddy that incident he's got to win it
3:57two weeks later the representative from
4:01coca-cola called and said Mr hands with
4:05you when you're on board an order oh
4:07that's nice
4:09now what would we like to win
4:12now what would we like to it and my
4:15daughter said well I like it swim
4:17bicycle and I said and you won't win
4:20color you know I thought well everybody
4:23should do this because selected you know
4:27here it is see yourself is adding it so
4:30we had her sitting on a bicycle and it
4:33was five now at that point in time there
4:37were many many opportunities
4:39mythologists
4:40and most of them see a contest is when
4:43you have to complete something in 25
4:46words or less name something write an
4:49essay a sweepstake is when they just put
4:53your name in the pot and they draw from
4:561 million entries they draw your name I
5:01didn't think of that as competition I
5:04always thought the only competition you
5:07ever had is with yourself that's when
5:10you doubt yourself so now my daughter we
5:15had the name Pony and it got to be now
5:18this was a fun thing and my son I mean
5:22we didn't look for big things
5:24rollerskates you know bicycles and
5:28things that were that children who
5:31wanted the boom boxes you know for music
5:36and stuff
5:36and so we started we service would sit
5:40at night and I says oh you're gonna get
5:43Pamela on her bicycle her bicycle and we
5:47have to name a pony
5:48how are we gonna name a pony and show a
5:52picture of the pony and they said well
5:54he's brown and I said yeah he's brown
5:57and what else and what else does he do
6:01well
6:04visit France well then we call him
6:06Prince Charming Prince Charming and get
6:10on a pony what else he bucks him buck to
6:14Prince Charming and these were what we
6:17call coined words and that's what we
6:21sent him I don't know which entry one
6:24but she had her for tonight single okay
6:28so we they've got all the little stuff
6:31now I want linoleum for the floor and I
6:34get little William then I want something
6:36else and I get it
6:38now I'm thinking bigger now I want to
6:42win trips and my son my younger son said
6:45let's go to a dude ranch
6:48do you know we won this trip to a dude
6:52ranch and stupid me
6:53this was in Arizona and that's when I
6:57was afraid of flying and they I won the
7:01prize they're gonna fly and I said I
7:03don't fly can be drive down and then I
7:06was I was I didn't get the prize because
7:11he had to follow their rules and
7:13something that he was very very ticked
7:18about that you have to learn to fly
7:20activate but now the next thing I wanted
7:23children wanna go to Disneyland and that
7:27meant flying too and I thought well I'll
7:29just brave it out really and truly I was
7:33stupid on that area but at that time I
7:35didn't know better and so we get to one
7:39this trip to Disneyland
7:42and it was a fabulous fabulous trip and
7:48later on we didn't win a trip to dude
7:52ranch and I did go to that we did go
7:55into the dude ranch and then we want a
7:57trip to the World's Fair and go to the
8:00World's Fair and one thing that was real
8:03funny I was going to be 14 years old and
8:06I had read that Paris is a city of light
8:12of love and excitement and I wanted to
8:15be on the 1st of January I said what are
8:19we going to do this year and Padma so I
8:23said I want to be in Paris France City
8:27and the sidewalk faith drinking wine on
8:31my 40th birthday and I started to enter
8:36contests all the contests that were
8:40offering trips and there were many of
8:43there's a lot of trips always
8:45unconsciously always 25 words or less
8:48and I always used the same 25 words
8:55I said I'm a cool couple with three
8:59kiddos and I'd like to go to Paris
9:02friends to recapture the rapture of
9:06springtime ecstasy in my bank 40
9:10frustrated leaders that's well the first
9:15time
9:16one company investigates before you win
9:20a big prize
9:21you're investigated they call you and
9:23they come out interview you and they do
9:26that to find out if you are any way
9:29related to the sponsors anyway related
9:32because con testing are really on the up
9:36and up and if they wouldn't be I mean it
9:39would serve any purpose so I had the
9:45interview and I everything went fine but
9:49I only want third prize which to Hammond
9:52elect Corrigan and it didn't win that
9:55prize and I said well why did they get
9:59me
9:59org and you know somebody said to
10:02cultivate patience I have this big
10:07electric cam in Oregon and here it is
10:10now my birthday's the first to June and
10:12here it is April already and I still
10:16haven't had this trip now we're gonna
10:18have to plan this trip we're going to be
10:20there drinking wine and my husband even
10:23said well we have enough money book I
10:25said no I'm gonna win this with a trick
10:28well it seemed like the last minute I
10:31send that entry off and lo and behold I
10:35got a phone call and said mr. Hadson
10:39I used his name and when I'm in my name
10:43you won a trip to Venice Italy and I
10:48thought well I don't want it I've been
10:49to Venice I want to go to Paris and the
10:53man said well you can change
10:55there's first-class and you can change
10:57whatever you want to do and he said when
11:01we - like in the tickets I said like
11:03right now and we had a messenger come
11:05and bring these tickets and we got on
11:09the plane and to make a long story short
11:12on my 40th birthday I was at that
11:16sidewalk with my husband
11:20so we
11:22this is something else I need to bring
11:24because I thought this was well if it
11:28was nice
11:29my husband and I are sitting here when
11:32afternoon and I just got back from a
11:36trip a long trip sometimes you went with
11:39me and some kind of didn't and go with
11:42me first time and then sick then he got
11:44bored because I was always counseling
11:48people and then that night I was in mine
11:50and he knew everything but anyway we're
11:53sitting here you said let's do something
11:55off to the let's do something exciting
11:58what you gonna do I said you know I love
12:02love I said and I noticed in the paper
12:07that they're having this basically a
12:11whorehouse in Texas and I said I would
12:14love to go see that show and he said
12:20what I'll tell you what what's up oh
12:22let's have lunch and I'll start calling
12:26the airlines and we'll see what we can
12:30do he says sounds like fun doesn't it we
12:33were eating lunch we come back here for
12:35coffee and the phone rings mrs. hansal I
12:40said yes he said I'm rich little you
12:43don't know him but he was producing a
12:46show to tell the truth in New York and
12:50he said your name came up as a very very
12:53good contestant how would you like to
12:56come to New York and be on my show I
13:01said I looked at that and I thought God
13:05is this for real
13:06and I said what is the tongue he said
13:09well it's to tell the truth and the show
13:11had just started and now he said I will
13:15pay all your expenses first class and
13:17what else do you want and I said could I
13:21have tickets to this off Broadway Joe
13:23will success spoil Rock hunter and he
13:27said no what else and I said well my
13:29husband wanted it well ok we'll do it
13:31we'll give your husband a ticket also
13:34and what
13:35I mean you know when they want to they
13:38want and he said everything that we
13:42advertise he will also get electric
13:46blankets me whatever they were
13:48advertising I said when do you want me
13:51when you and he's where you come this
13:53week or next week and I said well I'd
13:56see and my husband says this week this
13:58okay so how about this week Oh we'll
14:01have you tickets for you by carrier had
14:11this Hotel salt it's a Broadway play was
14:15there three days all except a all
14:18expenses and they give you a voucher if
14:21you want to camp to go wherever you want
14:24to eat wherever you wanted and entertain
14:27you really it's nice to be on these talk
14:29shows well that's so what is it I mean
14:37you know there were many many instances
14:40where I would hear of something the
14:44thing I'm digressing I'm sorry because
14:47you're interesting in being a winner and
14:50all of you out there are winners you
14:52know that and you can have anything you
14:55want provided you know it is see
14:59yourself as having it and if there's a
15:02delay in results don't be disappointed
15:05maybe you need to cultivate a little
15:07more patience that's all it is
15:09and it's yours and you say but the
15:13competition is so fierce so fierce and I
15:18said everything is competition how long
15:21I mean eventually if you stay with
15:25something long enough and strong enough
15:27its energy and it's got to come to you
15:30that's the law of attraction it's out
15:33there for anybody I never looked at in
15:36this competition
15:37I remember when after I had the
15:41publicity and had won that house and
15:44lost to leanness and had won all the
15:46cars whatever I needed or wanted this
15:50was very interesting because that night
15:52we went to dance and we're dancing and
15:57right at the as you came in you signed
15:59in and they had this visual put your
16:02name in at the end of the night they had
16:04food cakes because it was Christmas
16:06Dunning and they had this big boom box
16:09and my daughter had been wanting this
16:12huge boom box that had all these
16:16acoustics and things out and I looked at
16:19it and I said oh there's a family's
16:21Christmas present well the woman that
16:24was under taking the tickets her
16:27overburdening and she laughed and she
16:30said well mrs. Hansen's here so really
16:34and truly it's stupid to put your name
16:37in the Hansons won the blue box already
16:39all right what did I do
16:41they were giving me their energy
16:43everybody in that room gave me energy
16:46because they knew now we've won this
16:49house and we're dancing and this man
16:52said I guess she's got pets and she's
16:54got the moon box and we're they're
16:57making a joke of it a joke and they
17:00don't know that I didn't take their
17:03energy they gave it to me and that night
17:05when his boss now it's time to tell them
17:09to have the drawing and here's that
17:11fishbowl full of names and the boxing
17:17I'm not going to have anything to do
17:19with this somebody come up and draw a
17:22name and a woman came up and she said
17:25I'll get a different name and she
17:28whisked around and wisdom and pulled a
17:31name and it was my name okay
17:34this is energy this is energy this is
17:38what they do and yes you can get energy
17:41from someone else if they're negative I
17:44mean why not
17:46we mentioned the house thing tell us
17:48more about how you on the house yes I
17:51came back after my trip and in Dallas we
17:56have a group of women that get together
17:58and we call her the contest we call them
18:01the range writers and when we got there
18:05we would spawn entry blanks we would
18:09stand up and say what we won this month
18:11we won this and this a business one
18:14month I won a prize every day 30 prizes
18:17one prize every day
18:19some of them would win four or five of
18:22them and we had a lot of fun and they
18:24were very supportive so the night I got
18:27there the woman one of the women said oh
18:30and one of the world's you went to the
18:33New York on your way to Paris did you
18:36stop at the World's Fair and I said yeah
18:38my son was a trip to the World's Fair so
18:41he was with us and then after the trip
18:45we were at the World's Fair he went back
18:47home
18:48someone met him and so forth and we went
18:51on to Paris and she said while you were
18:54there did you see that Formica house she
18:57said that's a world that's an entire
19:00United States a contest and Formica is
19:04having a new product that they're
19:07sponsoring and they're going to build a
19:08house someplace in the United States and
19:11all you have to do throughout the United
19:15States the builders were you building
19:18their houses but they were using this
19:21molding that Formica was very very proud
19:24of using so anybody throughout the
19:29United States you have to visit one of
19:32the homes that had these entry blanks
19:34that were using for mica well in my area
19:38it was Garland the only place that was
19:42headless thing and she said what are you
19:45good and I said no I didn't know about
19:47it I didn't know about it well it's in
19:49Darland and it's closing next week and
19:52so on the way home driving home because
19:56Dallas is a
19:5827 miles from Irving rather all I could
20:01think about was God I'd like to lead a
20:04new house that's pretty yeah I think I
20:07own a house so the next day it's
20:12drizzling and one of my god two of my
20:15friends that I like word in this contest
20:17Club with me live in Irving so I called
20:20one of them and I said let's go over and
20:23see that for my girls and enter and she
20:26said oh she said you know they've
20:29already picked the entries it's in New
20:31York and they've already picked the
20:33injuries and she's know and the other
20:36one was having her rug shampooed she
20:38couldn't go and I tried
20:41I said I'll even buy your pizza on the
20:43way let's go and nobody would go with it
20:47starting to drizzling rain and I
20:50something I swear something oh actually
20:53no the next thing I knew I'm in the car
20:56driving 53 miles when I got there I sank
21:06over chairs and I'm already deciding
21:14that I want Spanish furniture
21:17I'm already building the inside of the
21:20house and there wasn't anybody there
21:22except the woman that sat you know I
21:26registered my name and I registered acts
21:30name and I took an entry that night must
22:11got to work you believe what I said we
22:14drove all that way so he could look at
22:18that house and that was it it was a done
22:21deal now we come home and he draws the
22:24plans for the house and he said tell us
22:29the kids Mama's gonna win us this big
22:31Alison where do we want it we're out
22:35looking for Lots we've got the plan here
22:39so when they come we can be ready and
22:42then that it was a month now the contest
22:46closed that weekend it was a month later
22:50right now somebody on the phone called
22:55I'm in Dallas and they call Pam and they
22:59asked to pet his missus and so they know
23:02she's had a baby on your husband he said
23:06yes he said did she entered that I mean
23:09did she go to that Formica home Pat said
23:12oh we were both there I am so impressed
23:17with that laminated for my gun we were
23:22so impressed and he said the right thing
23:25and that was it
23:27and he said well he said we're just
23:29checking everybody to see if they
23:32actually did go in there's nothing here
23:34Thank You mr. Hanson for your time that
23:37was all he said
23:38all he asked him are you related
23:42anybody at the house number one number
23:45two any relations that work for Mike
23:48those are questions so they he was on
23:51the phone five minutes answering all
23:53this and he was he knew that because we
23:56knew when we got a big prize we'd have
23:59to have an investigation recall and so I
24:03came home that night and he was ecstatic
24:06or we went her house and all we did was
24:09I wonder how long it's going to take
24:12them to let us know and that's all I
24:16told the kids and some it was about
24:20another month later morning I woke up
24:23and I said the kids were at breakfast
24:26the two boys were still there and my
24:29daughter was in college and I said well
24:32listen they're gonna let us know we won
24:35this house but God say act surprised and
24:40they went off to school and my husband
24:43said are you sure they're coming I said
24:45yeah and he was I said just stay in bed
24:48and I said pretend just world is gonna
24:52wait for well at two o'clock and now
24:55it's 1 o'clock and they're in and I went
24:58to the bakery to get some bakery and I'm
25:01getting ready to put the coffee pot on
25:03when they come and nothing happens and
25:06about 2:30 I get this phone call and
25:09they say mister missus had so when does
25:14your husband get off work and I said
25:17well he's here now
25:19oh they were waiting for him to get off
25:21work so they could tell us together I
25:24said well he's here on what is and I
25:27said he just took the day off well then
25:29we're coming right out we're
25:31representatives vice-president of
25:33Formica and our PR man we want to come
25:40out and tell you something very very
25:42interesting for you yeah and then I
25:49thought you reminded that to act
25:51surprised they gave in the dough I did I
25:56acted oh my god oh no not me oh no no
26:00and I see I told him don't show them the
26:03plans so you're talking to any city well
26:07where do you want it and I said well
26:09there's a new area you know just I know
26:12I said and we have the plans and the guy
26:17looked at me and I said well we were
26:19planning we were planning on building a
26:22house and so we had all the plans there
26:30and he couldn't believe it you know and
26:33I said yeah we we had plans of enlarging
26:36this place and that's how it came about
26:39and from that period on they hired an
26:44interior decorator
26:46they hired so many people because it was
26:51publicity for their Formica
26:54they would call me they send me flowers
26:58one weekend he'd always called and say
27:01are you happy are you happy because at
27:05that time the National Enquirer which is
27:08at Gregg magazine called and said if
27:11there's any negatives things because
27:14this is the first time the house had
27:16ever been given if there's any negatives
27:19things tell us and we'll pay for the
27:21negativity and I just get a real and
27:25unluck and I had that offer two or three
27:28times and they were aware that they were
27:31looking for negative things
27:34and I the word anything anything but you
27:36call up and say are you happy is there
27:38anything you can do and every time they
27:40came they wind us and dying this at the
27:42best best hotels and so one day he
27:46called and he said what's your favorite
27:48place and they were building and he kept
27:51coming and visiting bringing me candy
27:53flowers and so forth and I said God and
27:56what I'd like to go to New York okay
27:58we'll put it was centered in New York
28:01and they brought us first-class tickets
28:05my husband I went to New York and we had
28:07there were at that time
28:09the play was on Broadway will success
28:13spoil Rock hunter I was there play I
28:17wanted to see and they send me to New
28:20York and while I was in New York I did a
28:23lot of publicity with them one of the
28:26magazines up the Good Housekeeping
28:27magazine and they interviewed me and so
28:31forth and then they had the house open
28:33for a month where they could people came
28:37in and I was just a hostess and they had
28:41people there that took Kerry between the
28:43house and so forth and then it was
28:45turned over to sufficient gold piece we
28:48had a gold key my husband and I were
28:51given a gold key and then he asked
28:56listen that's a big at that time that
29:00period in the for 50 60 s rather income
29:05tax was a big challenge if you want
29:07so and you had to pay it right away and
29:09he said if income tax is a problem we'll
29:14take care of you no I mean they couldn't
29:18do it they could there was a famous
