- 0:00Okay, so let's get into chapter [music]
- 0:01six.
- 0:02And um this is where we're going to
- 0:04learn those elementary principles of the
- 0:06Oracles of God. This is where we learn
- 0:09the basic fundamentals, the core
- 0:11principles that everything else is built
- 0:14upon. So, the kingdom [music]
- 0:16the church
- 0:18the ecclesia has core principles.
- 0:20[music]
- 0:22And
- 0:23Hebrews chapter six gives them to us.
- 0:25Hebrews chapter six verse one.
- 0:27Therefore,
- 0:30leaving
- 0:31the elementary teaching
- 0:34about the Christ, the Messiah,
- 0:37let us press on to maturity.
- 0:40Not laying again a foundation of
- 0:46So, he's going to tell us what we're
- 0:47leaving.
- 0:49And when he does, he's going to reveal
- 0:51to us what the foundation is.
- 0:54In your walk with God, if this is not
- 0:55your foundation, you are not built on
- 0:57the foundation of Christ.
- 1:01This is the foundation. These are the
- 1:03core principles. If you don't have these
- 1:06points, if these are not the core
- 1:08fundamentals
- 1:10that create the worldview expectation
- 1:13outlook and framework of your whole
- 1:17Christian project, you are not building
- 1:20according
- 1:21to the foundation of Christ.
- 1:25Okay, let us press on to maturity, not
- 1:27laying again
- 1:28a foundation of
- 1:31repentance from dead works and faith
- 1:35toward God.
- 1:37There's the first foundation stone.
- 1:39Maybe you see it as two, maybe you see
- 1:41it as one.
- 1:42But I see it as one. I see repentance
- 1:46describing renunciation and rejection of
- 1:50all lordship and
- 1:53tyranny of human will
- 1:56apart from [music] God.
- 1:57That gets of the wrong, Lord, and I see
- 2:00faith toward God as
- 2:03turning and redirecting all that faith
- 2:06formerly directed toward self, now we
- 2:09put our trust in him.
- 2:11We put the same sort of default
- 2:14confidence in him, his goodness, his
- 2:16word as we once
- 2:18attributed to self. So, repentance from
- 2:21dead works and faith toward God. I'm not
- 2:23going to be saved by the rubbish that
- 2:26man does without God. Everything in that
- 2:29category is dead works, and I'm turning
- 2:31from dead works,
- 2:33and I'm having faith toward God.
- 2:35That is the very first foundation stone.
- 2:39The word repent is the start of the
- 2:43start of the start. If that does not
- 2:45describe your beginning,
- 2:47you don't have the right beginning.
- 2:50Repentance from dead works and faith
- 2:52toward God.
- 2:53Instruction
- 2:56about washings
- 2:58or baptisms
- 3:00is better stated. So, what are the
- 3:02instructions or the teaching about
- 3:04baptisms, washings?
- 3:07Well, there's one baptism. We know that.
- 3:10One Lord, one faith, one baptism, one
- 3:13God and Father of all who is over all
- 3:14and in you all. One baptism.
- 3:17But, it's twofold.
- 3:20One part of the baptism submerges your
- 3:23physical corporal person.
- 3:27And the other part of the baptism
- 3:28submerges your soul,
- 3:31your personality,
- 3:34your inner man, okay? So, the the first
- 3:37part of the baptism
- 3:39is the
- 3:40submerging
- 3:42of your body, the flesh that you're
- 3:45going to live out your faith in. It's
- 3:47plunging that
- 3:50into the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
- 3:53Amen? So, water baptism is when you bury
- 3:58the corpse of the dead man and his will
- 4:01that you have died to in repentance.
- 4:03Water baptism has a burial, calls down
- 4:06the name of Jesus upon it, and seals
- 4:09that. And And that's where your name and
- 4:12identity changes when he gives you his
- 4:14name, and you are baptized in the name
- 4:18of Jesus Christ. So, Paul was told,
- 4:20"Arise and be baptized calling on the
- 4:25name of Jesus Christ." That's water
- 4:28baptism. Spirit baptism
- 4:31is not in water, it's in presence.
- 4:34It's when the surrounding glory and
- 4:37presence of God becomes so precious, so
- 4:41real, that you yield yourself up to it
- 4:45until the last, even the most unruly
- 4:48member of your tongue, is overwhelmed
- 4:52by the presence of God.
- 4:54Your spirit baptism is very parallel to
- 4:57your water baptism. One overwhelms the
- 5:00body,
- 5:01and the water closes over it, and the
- 5:04other overwhelms the soul, and the
- 5:06presence envelops, infuses, and
- 5:10overwhelms it. So, that's the teaching
- 5:12of baptisms. So, we got one stone,
- 5:14repentance from dead works and faith
- 5:16toward God. Two stones, doctrine of
- 5:18baptisms.
- 5:21Okay. Then the next stone is laying on
- 5:24of hands.
- 5:26Now, to a Hebrew congregation, which is
- 5:28what he's writing, remember we're in the
- 5:29book of Hebrews, they knew exactly what
- 5:32that meant. Laying on of hands means the
- 5:35way authority is transferred
- 5:39in the culture of Christ.
- 5:42The laying on of hands is how authority
- 5:46is designated.
- 5:48When someone is married, the preacher
- 5:51lays his hand on their heads and he
- 5:53institutes the marriage as of God.
- 5:57When someone is ordained to ministry,
- 6:00the ministry the the eldership lays
- 6:02their hands on the minister and
- 6:04institutes him as
- 6:07authorized by God. Right? The right hand
- 6:12is the right hand of fellowship. When
- 6:13someone comes into the church, we extend
- 6:16to them in Paul's words the right hand
- 6:18of Christian fellowship.
- 6:21When someone is sick and we want to use
- 6:23the authority of God to cast out the
- 6:27sickness, the Lord stretches forth his
- 6:30hand through us as we lay hands on the
- 6:32sick and they will recover.
- 6:35So, the laying on of hands is basically
- 6:38church authority. How God's authority
- 6:40works properly in the church. This is
- 6:44the third critical foundation stone. If
- 6:47you don't understand how godly anointed
- 6:50authority from him is expressed in and
- 6:54through the church, you don't have the
- 6:56third critical foundation stone. You
- 7:00don't have this
- 7:01core principle.
- 7:04And then the last stone, the fourth,
- 7:06resurrection
- 7:08from the dead and eternal judgment.
- 7:11And this is the idea of eschatology,
- 7:14resurrection from the dead.
- 7:16Where are we going? What is the end of
- 7:19all of this?
- 7:20And what is the consequence?
- 7:23Do you understand? Are we headed toward
- 7:24a final reckoning?
- 7:26And is there a final consequence post
- 7:28that reckoning?
- 7:30And if there is, then everything has to
- 7:33be assessed in that light.
- 7:35If you don't know where you're going,
- 7:37>> [clears throat]
- 7:38>> you don't have
- 7:39the fourth foundation stone. Now, I will
- 7:42observe that there is one substrata
- 7:46that exists even beneath
- 7:49these four stones.
- 7:51These stones are the four stones, the
- 7:54four corners of the house of God.
- 7:57Amen. The four cornerstone, the four
- 8:00stones where the temple of God, the
- 8:03church is supposed to be built. These
- 8:05four truths.
- 8:07But in order to build a house, you have
- 8:08to dig down to bedrock.
- 8:11And then once you find bedrock, you lay
- 8:14your foundation stones on bedrock and
- 8:16you build up from there. So, I ask, we
- 8:19know now what the four stones are. What
- 8:20is the bedrock? What is the substrata
- 8:23beneath these stones?
- 8:25It is answering the question, "Who is
- 8:28God?"
- 8:30Because Jesus said, "Who do men say that
- 8:33I am?"
- 8:34And when Peter said, "You are the
- 8:36Messiah, the son of the living God." He
- 8:39said, "Upon this rock I will build my
- 8:44church." So, the rock of knowing who God
- 8:48is,
- 8:49his nature,
- 8:51his his form,
- 8:53his relationship with us. When That's
- 8:55the substrata. That's the big rock. And
- 8:58then the building gets constructed on
- 9:00that. So, in that way you could say five
- 9:02stones are five core principles. This
- 9:05one focuses on those that presuppose who
- 9:09God is cuz the Jews did know who God
- 9:11was.
- 9:14He goes on,
- 9:16"And this we will do if God permits."
- 9:19In the case of those who have once been
- 9:23enlightened,
- 9:25these are the people who have gotten the
- 9:28core principles and lost them.
- 9:31In the case of those who have once been
- 9:33enlightened
- 9:35and have tasted of the heavenly gift,
- 9:38and have been made partakers of the Holy
- 9:40Spirit,
- 9:41the heavenly gift
- 9:43is to partake of the Holy Spirit.
- 9:46And have tasted the good word of God and
- 9:50the powers of the age to come.
- 9:54And then
- 9:55have fallen away.
- 9:58Now, this this describes
- 10:02the condition
- 10:04that the writer is trying to prevent.
- 10:08I don't want you guys to fall away.
- 10:11He's bewailing that they're immature,
- 10:13but he definitely doesn't want them to
- 10:15lose these four core principles.
- 10:19They've They've experienced God. This is
- 10:22not an intellectual conformity to
- 10:25doctrine. This is These are people
- 10:27who've been changed. They've tasted the
- 10:28word of God. They've partaken of the
- 10:30Holy Spirit, the powers of the age to
- 10:33come.
- 10:35And then have fallen away. It is
- 10:38impossible
- 10:40to renew them again to repentance.
- 10:45And this says since they again crucify
- 10:49to themselves the Son of God and put him
- 10:52to an open shame.
- 10:54But that word since
- 10:56is not in there.
- 10:58Now, there is no word there.
- 11:00The translators put a little note
- 11:02because they don't know how to deal with
- 11:04this.
- 11:05But
- 11:07the better translation would be while.
- 11:12While they again crucify to themselves
- 11:15the Son of God. The Amplified gets it
- 11:17right here. While. Since and while
- 11:20or during that season.
- 11:24During that time.
- 11:26The word's not there, but the grammar
- 11:28necessitates that.
- 11:31Or it it does not necessitate it, this
- 11:34it allows for it in the best way and it
- 11:36harmonizes, in my opinion, in the best
- 11:38possible way with where we're going. So,
- 11:40what does this mean?
- 11:42They've They know God. They've come to
- 11:44reality. It is impossible to renew them
- 11:47again to repentance while they again
- 11:50crucify to themselves the Son of God and
- 11:52put him to an open shame. I already told
- 11:54you
- 11:55that when they left
- 11:57the church and went back to the
- 11:58synagogue, they could not get back into
- 12:01the synagogue without putting Jesus to
- 12:03an open shame.
- 12:05They cannot be made right with the
- 12:08church until they renounce their
- 12:10renunciation of Christ. They cannot be
- 12:13renewed to repentance.
- 12:16Renew them to repentance means
- 12:19they were old, but they're made new
- 12:20again. They were old, they were new,
- 12:22they were made new again.
- 12:25You can't get them back in. You can't
- 12:27restore them to the fellowship. That's
- 12:29what he means by renew them to
- 12:31repentance.
- 12:32If they're still
- 12:34making Jesus a reproach in the society
- 12:38of the Jewish community where they
- 12:40dwell, you cannot have them back in the
- 12:42church since and while
- 12:45they again crucify to themselves the Son
- 12:47of God and put him to an open shame.
- 12:50They are participating in the crowd that
- 12:53shrieked crucify him.
- 12:55You cannot have oneness with that table
- 12:58and oneness with this table. You cannot
- 13:00have oneness with that crowd and oneness
- 13:02with this crowd. You got to pick one or
- 13:04the other.
- 13:06Now, look at Look at his justification
- 13:08and I'm going to use this as proof that
- 13:11my interpretation is right. Cuz the
- 13:14Calvinists will
- 13:15likely get a little bit of uh heartburn
- 13:18at this point. Verse seven. For the
- 13:22ground
- 13:24that drinks the rain
- 13:27which often falls on it and brings forth
- 13:30vegetation useful
- 13:33to those for whose sake it was also
- 13:36tilled receives a blessing from God.
- 13:41But if it yields thorns and thistles
- 13:49which James makes the same as cursing
- 13:53if it yields thorns and thistles, it is
- 13:56worthless
- 13:59and close
- 14:02to being cursed or ready
- 14:05to be cursed or almost at a curse.
- 14:10And it ends up being burned.
- 14:14He's saying
- 14:16if you're putting Jesus to an open shame
- 14:21you're bringing forth thistles and
- 14:24thorns and you better stop it
- 14:27cuz you're not going to get back into
- 14:28salvation. You're not going to be
- 14:29renewed to repentance that leads to life
- 14:34if you don't get those thorns and
- 14:36thistles out of your life. He doesn't
- 14:39say if you start producing thorns and
- 14:41thistles, you're cursed. He says you're
- 14:43ready. You're close. You're almost
- 14:46there. Which means you can stop. And
- 14:49that means that it's not impossible to
- 14:52get them back to repentance. It's
- 14:54impossible to get them back to
- 14:55repentance while thorns and thistles are
- 14:58still coming out of their mouth, while
- 15:00they're still putting Jesus to an open
- 15:02shame.
- 15:03You can't be bashing the church of
- 15:06Christ lying about them, slandering
- 15:10them, blaspheming them and show up on
- 15:12Sunday and pretend to be renewed to
- 15:15repentance that leads to life. You're a
- 15:17liar.
- 15:18That's what he's saying.
- 15:20But you can repent.
- 15:22You just can't repent while these
- 15:24thistles
- 15:26are still in you.
- 15:29He's saying, "Don't let these people
- 15:31drink in the rain
- 15:33if it's not producing the fruit.
- 15:36If the rain of church meetings, if the
- 15:38rain of fellowship love, if the rain
- 15:41that's soaking into their ground is
- 15:42producing thistles, don't be kidding
- 15:45yourself.
- 15:46They're bad.
- 15:48And you can't have them back until they
- 15:50deal
- 15:51with their problem.
- 15:53But beloved, we are convinced
- 15:57of better things concerning you.
- 16:01And things that accompany salvation,
- 16:05though we are speaking in this way.
- 16:07So his burden is for people in the
- 16:09church.
- 16:11But he didn't have some fatalistic, "Oh,
- 16:13you commit sin, you're predestined to
- 16:15hell." Nor does he have a fatalistic,
- 16:17"You've crossed the line, you can't be
- 16:19restored."
- 16:20He's actually talking to these people
- 16:22and he says, "I I'm seeing thorns and
- 16:24thistles, but I'm convinced that you can
- 16:26get out of this."
- 16:28We are convinced of better things
- 16:30concerning you and things that accompany
- 16:32salvation.
- 16:34That would be the vegetation useful
- 16:37for which sake the ground was tilled.
- 16:40Things that accompany salvation, though
- 16:42we are speaking in this way. For God is
- 16:44not unjust
- 16:46so as to forget your work
- 16:49and the love which you have shown toward
- 16:51his name
- 16:53in having ministered and in still
- 16:55ministering to the saints.
- 16:58He says, "It's near to being cursed.
- 17:00It's not cursed.
- 17:02God's not going to forget everything you
- 17:03did.
- 17:05There are people who become blasphemers,
- 17:07they did a lot of good before they went
- 17:08there.
- 17:10But you got to get out of there or
- 17:11you're going to be lost. You're near to
- 17:13being cursed.
- 17:16And we desire that each one of you show
- 17:19the same diligence.
- 17:20He doesn't just want it to be some, he
- 17:22wants it to be all of them.
- 17:23So as to realize the full assurance of
- 17:26hope until the end.
- 17:28So that you will not be sluggish,
- 17:31but imitators of those who through faith
- 17:34and patience inherit the promises.
- 17:38There's a promise, but you got to stick
- 17:40with the process. You got to believe in
- 17:42the process. You got to defend the
- 17:44process.
- 17:46For when God made the promise to
- 17:48Abraham,
- 17:50since he could swear by no one greater,
- 17:52he swore by himself.
- 17:55Saying, "I will surely bless you, and I
- 17:59will surely multiply you."
- 18:01And so having patiently waited,
- 18:05he, Abraham, obtained the promise. He's
- 18:08telling them, "Be like Abraham."
- 18:12Don't give up Don't give up.
- 18:14Don't bring forth Ishmael.
- 18:16Stick with it.
- 18:19For men swear by one greater than
- 18:22themself.
- 18:24And with them an oath given as
- 18:25confirmation is an end of every dispute.
- 18:31In the same way God,
- 18:33desiring even more to show the heirs of
- 18:37the promise the unchangeableness of his
- 18:40purpose,
- 18:41he interposed with an oath so that by
- 18:44two unchangeable things in which it is
- 18:46impossible for God to lie,
- 18:48we who have taken refuge would have
- 18:50strong encouragement to take hold of the
- 18:53hope set before us.
- 18:56This hope we have
- 18:59as an anchor of the soul,
- 19:02a hope both sure and steadfast, and one
- 19:07which enters
- 19:09within the veil.
- 19:12>> Veil?
- 19:14What?
- 19:16>> Where Jesus [music] has entered
- 19:20as a forerunner for us, having become a
- 19:24high priest forever according to the
- 19:26order of Melchisedec.
- 19:30So, he says,
- 19:32God made a promise and God doesn't lie.
- 19:35We've got strong consolation. He swore
- 19:37by himself. You can trust it. Amen? And
- 19:40he says, we have a hope
- 19:42that is an anchor of the soul.
- 19:44But, that hope is not an idea, it's a
- 19:46person. It's Jesus.
- 19:48And Jesus, our hope, has entered behind
- 19:53the veil.
- 19:54He has gone into heaven itself, [music]
- 19:56the holy of holies,
- 20:00where he ever lives. He is He is there
- 20:03with this earthly connection to us
- 20:06and this heavenly union with God.
- 20:10And that's the priest that he is for us.
- 20:13He's not coming and going from the holy
- 20:16of holies. He has [music] complete
- 20:17oneness. Jesus is living, breathing,
- 20:20walking, talking reconciliation between
- 20:23humanity and divinity. He is Yahweh and
- 20:27Adam. Adam's descendants come into
- 20:29complete fellowship.
- 20:32Amen? So, he ever lives in this
- 20:35capacity of reconciliation.
- 20:38Whenever we call on God, we call on a
- 20:41God who is both human and divine.
- 20:44Whenever we tell him our needs, we tell
- 20:46a God who suffered like us. Didn't just
- 20:49make us.
- 20:50He hurt in our skin.
- 20:52>> [music]
- 20:52>> He knows us that intimately.
- 20:55And he is a forerunner. He is leading us
- 20:58into the presence of his father.
- 21:01Amen? So, that we can have the same
- 21:02union with God that he enjoys.
- 21:06And that's the high priestly service
- 21:08that he has
- 21:08>> [music]
- 21:08>> according to the order of Melchizedek.
- 21:14>> [music]
