- 0:32alright by now everybody knows the one
- 0:34xerocon is on in Dublin in just a couple
- 0:37of weeks time and their manes their main
- 0:39guest their main speaker is gonna be
- 0:41Lance Armstrong and I'm delighted to say
- 0:42Lance Armstrong is with us now
- 0:43that's how you doing well good things
- 0:47I'm just um I'm here in Austin just kind
- 0:50of uh you know living the life raising
- 0:52my kids and exercising a little bit and
- 0:56no complaint yeah okay well that's not a
- 0:59bad way to be I guess what most people
- 1:02wanted me to ask you when we said you
- 1:03were coming on was why are you coming to
- 1:06Dublin why are you doing interviews at
- 1:07the moment well why not I guess I would
- 1:15say it did I have done a few of these
- 1:22I've spoken at a few campuses here in
- 1:23the US have done a few more private gigs
- 1:27but they approached me and asked me to
- 1:29I'm not looking totally familiar with
- 1:32the conference and what it is I know
- 1:33that some of the other speakers who were
- 1:36there that like any follow up
- 1:38I've known for quite some time and so
- 1:43you know it was it was seemed like an
- 1:46interesting opportunity and one that one
- 1:49that I was looking forward to doing my
- 1:51my concern I guess with the conference
- 1:53and even with this interview a little
- 1:55bit is that you do have a very important
- 1:58ongoing case which it seems might
- 2:00prevent you from answering some of the
- 2:02questions that I think ultimately are
- 2:03going to lead to a sense of closure for
- 2:05a lot of people you know I mean every
- 2:10time I do a talk I say to the room
- 2:13I'm not you know I'm not here to
- 2:15[ __ ] you I'm gonna yes the question
- 2:18I'm gonna answer the question if if
- 2:19there happens to be a question that is
- 2:23too close in too sensitive to the
- 2:25federal case here in the United States
- 2:27you know I'm just going to tell you that
- 2:30I can't answer that question having said
- 2:33that I've never not answered a question
- 2:35right so I've never had a question where
- 2:38I thought oh my god this is too
- 2:40sensitive I just can't answer it so it's
- 2:41you know that that that could be the
- 2:44case in Dublin but like I said and I've
- 2:48done dozens of these since I case was
- 2:51was opened and I've never been put in a
- 2:54position where I thought oh no that's
- 2:56that's too sensitive were too close to
- 2:58that subject how close do you feel like
- 3:02you are to being free from the
- 3:07controversy because again that was one
- 3:09of the other things that like there are
- 3:10a lot of people wondering about putting
- 3:12their hand in their pockets to buy
- 3:14ticket for a conference which ultimately
- 3:15is going to support you where you're
- 3:16talking about your career which
- 3:19obviously the seventh or is you don't
- 3:22technically have them anymore you know
- 3:24you're you're a doper you've confessed
- 3:26to that and people still have a
- 3:28difficulty with supporting somebody
- 3:31financially who won races while doping
- 3:35yeah I don't I don't question that I
- 3:42don't fault them for that that's that's
- 3:43a that's a process that that I'm living
- 3:47through and and I guess as we all live
- 3:49through and and you know I got like I
- 3:52mean I'll just reiterate if if people
- 3:55are troubled by that or have a problem
- 3:58with it and don't want to come then I I
- 4:00can't
- 4:02you know fault them for that so that's
- 4:05that's that's the choice they'll get to
- 4:07make and and you know for the ones who
- 4:09who do come and I think they'll be so
- 4:13they'll be enough you know we'll have a
- 4:15good we'll have a good conversation it's
- 4:17the format is is interesting I like to I
- 4:20like opening with with a basic interview
- 4:23or a basic moderator and then hoping and
- 4:26then
- 4:27letting the floor ask the questions
- 4:28right so for that's 90 minutes letting
- 4:30that room ask questions for an hour like
- 4:32what's on your mind and every every
- 4:35setting that I've done that in these did
- 4:37you get some softballs right as can be
- 4:39expected but you get some people that
- 4:42are genuinely really pissed off and so
- 4:44that's you know those those aren't the
- 4:47easiest questions and answers but that's
- 4:51just part of it man this is not
- 4:52something that that people are going to
- 4:55forget about are people are going to
- 4:57move on from people people want whether
- 4:59it's an apology or whether it's a direct
- 5:02answer or whether it's some contrition
- 5:04whatever it is and so that's you know I
- 5:07welcome those opportunities and it's
- 5:11just it's the spot of myself in so what
- 5:15let's let's talk a bit about that
- 5:16because the apologies have been
- 5:18forthcoming and and I think everybody
- 5:20has seen you you talk about that and you
- 5:21know you're on the record to say I don't
- 5:23know what people want then maybe they
- 5:24want me to to apologize forever
- 5:26mmm not sure that's gonna happen but
- 5:27maybe that's a good thing I guess really
- 5:29most of our Western civilization is
- 5:31built on the notion that if you sin you
- 5:34must redeem yourself there must be an
- 5:35atonement made there must be some sense
- 5:38of of justice restored and I'm wondering
- 5:40maybe that's the bit of your story that
- 5:42we haven't actually seen yet so we've
- 5:44seen the apologies but for example I'm
- 5:46not really sure what you've done to help
- 5:48cycling since your ban I'm not really
- 5:50sure you've done to help anti-doping
- 5:51since your ban I don't really know what
- 5:54the status of your relationship with a
- 5:56bunch of other people who were key
- 5:57figures in your downfall
- 5:59the and Rios the LeMans Kimmage for
- 6:02example it's it's restitution to those
- 6:05people that I think will actually lead
- 6:07to people coming to these events and go
- 6:08and okay
- 6:09Lance's paid for what he did right so
- 6:14that's a loaded question so just go one
- 6:17by one now let's start at the beginning
- 6:18have you atoned to cycling you know
- 6:23that's that's a very different I'm I'm
- 6:26not not only am i banned from the sport
- 6:28but there-there is whether whether it's
- 6:32the riders whether it's the teams and
- 6:34events I mean not only I mean it's very
- 6:38difficult to have any impact
- 6:41right I'm not I'm not welcome there I'm
- 6:43persona non grata it's it's that's that
- 6:47one probably will never happen just
- 6:50because I'm simply you know I'm never
- 6:52there I have no people asking about
- 6:54cycling all the time I say I say I have
- 6:56no idea I mean I'm the I'm the last
- 6:58person that would know what's going on I
- 7:01guess with that so Jamie fuller thinks
- 7:03that you've got a role to play in the
- 7:05future of cycling because obviously you
- 7:06understand exactly what what they are
- 7:09one yeah I want to finish out what you
- 7:12said earlier so I want to go one by one
- 7:14I wanted to answer your initial yeah
- 7:16okay well I do think that you have a
- 7:19role to play in cycling if you were tone
- 7:21to them in the way that I would suggest
- 7:22that you told to them is kind of the
- 7:23answer to the anti-doping question and
- 7:24that's by having a full Frank disclosure
- 7:27and I know in the past you said that you
- 7:29would disclose everything if it was
- 7:30going to be at an international truth
- 7:35and reconciliation situation that
- 7:37doesn't look like it's going to happen
- 7:38anytime soon
- 7:38and maybe you could be the catalyst for
- 7:40that by saying this is how I doped this
- 7:42is when I doped this was the procedures
- 7:44that I used this was the money that it
- 7:45cost me this was the access that I had
- 7:47to Michaela Ferrari and these are the
- 7:49doctors that helped me he invested
- 7:59several million dollars
- 8:01in what was called the search report the
- 8:05CIA RSC report I testified multiple
- 8:08times probably more than anybody else
- 8:10for that Commission now most people
- 8:13forget that the search report even
- 8:15happened because it kind of came and
- 8:16went and it was largely panned the world
- 8:20over but I was the first person in the
- 8:22door I was completely transparent I
- 8:24testified multiple times and not only
- 8:27did I do that but I've testified
- 8:29multiple times and private to you sada
- 8:31and so you know people don't know those
- 8:36things people don't talk about those
- 8:37things and they don't want to know maybe
- 8:38they don't want to talk about them would
- 8:40you talk about them though would you
- 8:41tell us what you said to you sorry or
- 8:43like why why does that need to be
- 8:44private because it ultimately at this
- 8:46point I don't know who would be
- 8:48protected it seems like the the statute
- 8:52of limitations would apply to all this
- 8:53stuff anyway from 2000
- 8:54six and back in most cases and I think
- 8:58most cycling fans now would really be
- 9:00interested in the mechanics of the
- 9:01doping the how often it happens like
- 9:04what we've heard so far is what Floyd
- 9:05tells us and what Tyler Hamilton tells
- 9:07us but like your relationship with
- 9:10Michael a Ferrari is fascinating how
- 9:11that happens the the sense of joy that
- 9:15the two of you must have felt when you
- 9:16came together and realize that you found
- 9:18a kindred spirits well I don't know that
- 9:23would be a perfect analysis or
- 9:27description of it but I want to I'm
- 9:29gonna pin it again I want to keep going
- 9:30back and finishing the first set of
- 9:33questions okay you talked about a tone
- 9:35normal cycle and you talked about it's
- 9:36normal with the anti-doping it I hope
- 9:38that I answered those questions and then
- 9:40you talked about atonement in
- 9:41restitution with others yeah so that's
- 9:44you Andrew apologize multiple times the
- 9:49apology hasn't really worked she's she's
- 9:51ready Garrett good here's the thing
- 9:53you're a big boy I'm a big boy she's a
- 9:57big girl
- 9:57we're all we're all adults here you can
- 9:59either accept the apart what I've
- 10:00learned and and you can't fault you
- 10:03can't force somebody to an accept an
- 10:06apology right so whether it's the
- 10:08interviews whether it's bonds whether
- 10:10it's ammo Riley whether it's crystal
- 10:13that songs I've traveled the world to
- 10:15make to make it right with these people
- 10:17I have sat in those settings with
- 10:19Simeoni with best songs with mo Riley
- 10:21I'm sat with Greg and Kathy LeMond in
- 10:23San Francisco for half a day and so I
- 10:27don't know not only that I sit there but
- 10:31I meant it right so I don't know what
- 10:33else I need to do well I guess so let's
- 10:35take most people people that's what
- 10:37people in these in these positions have
- 10:40accepted the apology and moved on with
- 10:42life so the LeMans haven't done the
- 10:44ondrea's haven't write the LeMans am i
- 10:47person with knowledge of the situation
- 10:49told me that you didn t meet them for
- 10:51four hours and their report my source
- 10:54was that your primary goal was to have a
- 10:56press release sign to say that you'd
- 10:58made up with Greg but the reality is
- 11:00that you didn't actually apologize and
- 11:02they were offered to make amends with
- 11:03elements instead that you claimed during
- 11:05the meeting that you got caught up in
- 11:07them
- 11:08moments uh I don't know who told you
- 11:13that that's that's absolutely not true
- 11:15and and and furthermore I'll repeat I
- 11:20did apologize to them right away
- 11:23and I meant it and and and furthermore
- 11:25on top of that because I know that that
- 11:29they were concerned about the impact
- 11:31that it had on our children I offered to
- 11:33travel wherever I needed to travel to
- 11:35sit with their own children and say hey
- 11:37I am sorry about this and I hope you
- 11:41forgive me I understand if you don't but
- 11:43what you just described I don't know who
- 11:45told you that is absolutely untrue and
- 11:48you know of course you don't have to
- 11:50believe me and I don't have to believe
- 11:52you I don't have any credibility with
- 11:53with with these situations but it is
- 11:57simply not true okay the point about the
- 12:01LeMans I suppose is they the four people
- 12:04who are maybe unfamiliar with the story
- 12:05in your deposition in the SCA case in
- 12:082006 you said that Greg had an alcohol
- 12:11and drug problem
- 12:13and ultimately Trek chooses you over him
- 12:16and 20 million dollar a year revenue
- 12:18business disappears from the LeMans life
- 12:21so did you ever think about making
- 12:23financial restitution to the LeMans so
- 12:28you want this so I need to make
- 12:30financial restitution because I had
- 12:32nothing to do with treks decisions to do
- 12:34that really
- 12:45oh yeah we're still here really
- 12:48absolutely not because it seems it seems
- 12:52weird that they turn their back on an
- 12:54American cycling hero like Greg Lemonds
- 12:56without their star performer you who is
- 12:59on the verge of making them billions
- 13:01grantors but yeah you had no input no
- 13:05I'm I'm I'm answering your question I
- 13:08mean you don't have to believe me
- 13:09okay I answered the question i if you
- 13:12want me to say it another way so that
- 13:13you're happy no I don't agree we
- 13:16understand exactly what you're saying
- 13:17there's there's no there's no
- 13:18communication issues there you did go
- 13:20after Greg LeMond after he said in that
- 13:23interview with David Walsh that's if you
- 13:25were doping it was the greatest frauds
- 13:27in history that that's seen I think
- 13:29where you're actually reading the paper
- 13:30is in the Alex Gibney movie so there was
- 13:33a personal sense of anger towards him
- 13:36which maybe leads to you know some of
- 13:40the language that you use you don't
- 13:42think you need to make financial
- 13:43restitution obviously that's that's
- 13:44clear no I don't think I do and here's
- 13:50thing here is I said in that room not
- 13:53only with Greg and Kathy I said in that
- 13:54room with with his lawyer
- 13:57and with my lawyer and there were plenty
- 13:59of other people in that room and and I
- 14:01apologized to him nope never at any time
- 14:03did Greg and/or Kathy say hey we feel
- 14:07like you owe us financially right there
- 14:09and I don't need to get into the details
- 14:12of the conversation the most important
- 14:13part was that I was I was sorry for my
- 14:17actions I was embarrassed by my actions
- 14:20and I apologized to them and they
- 14:22accepted the apology okay I don't think
- 14:24they did accept the apology it seems
- 14:25that's so I mean if you weren't in the
- 14:27room what are you talking about well
- 14:29I've got pretty good sources okay okay
- 14:33Superman
- 14:34so what else okay so let's move on to
- 14:38the Andreas and we leave the LeMans and
- 14:40maybe we'll reach out to them and see if
- 14:41they want to comment on this afterwards
- 14:43so with Betsy I guess it all stems from
- 14:46the hospital room in 1996 and the fact
- 14:50that she testified against you in 2006
- 14:53Frankie testified against you there's
- 14:56also now an audio recording of
- 14:58I think it's an oakley employee in the
- 15:00room who calls Greg Lemonds this is in
- 15:03the the BBC for film and she says that
- 15:06if subpoenaed by LeMans lawyers if there
- 15:09was ever a case against you that she
- 15:10would also testify that what she had
- 15:12heard in the room was what Betty
- 15:13reporter was in the room to this day
- 15:16still you say actually I don't I can't
- 15:20remember what was said in the room is
- 15:22that still your situation with patty
- 15:26that is still much that my I don't have
- 15:30a recollection of that conversation and
- 15:31[Music]
- 15:33if it's a little I mean this is where
- 15:38we're and this is perhaps where for
- 15:41Betsy and I can never reconcile she has
- 15:45a she has a strong memory of it I do not
- 15:47have a strong memory of it I think it's
- 15:49I think it's highly improbable that at
- 15:53that moment in a patient's treatment
- 15:56process that a doctor would come in and
- 15:58have an open conversation about that and
- 15:59son of a bunch of strangers to him and
- 16:03or her and so just because of medical
- 16:07privacy laws and HIPPA laws and all of
- 16:09the things they're they're firmly in
- 16:11place doctors just don't do that but but
- 16:14that's me they're sharing over there
- 16:15what would we all know what happened if
- 16:19I don't have a recollection of it as she
- 16:20does I'm sorry for the way that I
- 16:23treated the andreas I have said that and
- 16:26you know to me I mean I would love for
- 16:32at some point for them to accept my
- 16:34apology but you know what some some
- 16:37people just aren't in that place and and
- 16:39may never be when her name came up in
- 16:43your podcast recently with the interview
- 16:44that you were doing with the band foster
- 16:47the actor who who played you in the the
- 16:49program that movie you he said I there
- 16:54was like a pause when he asked you the
- 16:56question
- 16:56I don't know the specific wording of the
- 16:57question but it was basically suggesting
- 16:59that maybe there was something there was
- 17:01some other lying motive in how she was
- 17:04defending her family that went beyond
- 17:07defending her family and you went hell
- 17:09hath no fury like a woman scorned
- 17:12it doesn't really sound like you're
- 17:14making amends to a woman when that's you
- 17:16know a pretty terrible thing to say
- 17:18about her no and I didn't I don't know
- 17:22if you just listened to 30 seconds of it
- 17:24I said listen I want to be very
- 17:25respectful I'm not trying to offend
- 17:28anybody I don't want to I don't want to
- 17:32create more of an issue with that family
- 17:35and so I don't know if you've missed
- 17:39that part I heard that I heard the whole
- 17:41thing yes it is really understand for
- 17:42you
- 17:46but it did seem kind of you know there
- 17:50was a there was a gap there I don't know
- 17:52it just didn't seem like that was it
- 17:54seemed like you still have something
- 17:55against Betsy that you're still you know
- 17:57you weren't like no no no no hang on
- 17:58they're gonna stop that right there it
- 17:59was more like whoa we're not going there
- 18:01and then there's room for people to fill
- 18:03in that gap about 30 seconds before you
- 18:05get to that I want to be respectful but
- 18:07anyway maybe we should move on from this
- 18:08because like I did speak to Betsy in
- 18:10advance of this and she said that I can
- 18:13say on the record Lance has not made
- 18:15amends I don't want anything from him
- 18:16other than for him to stop lying about
- 18:18me when he was smearing me very few in
- 18:20the media contacted me so I just wanted
- 18:22to put that side of it out there Micheli
- 18:24Ferrari let's talk a bit a bit about
- 18:25that because you you put him in the Alex
- 18:27Gibney movie and I was astonished by
- 18:30that because at that stage Michaela
- 18:32Ferrari is one of the world's most
- 18:34recognized doping doctors he's had a
- 18:36conviction granted it's been overturned
- 18:38but the world and his wife knows that
- 18:41Ferrari histology and you let Alex
- 18:44Gibney go and interview him and see all
- 18:46the stuff that's there and you know show
- 18:48some of the science that you guys are
- 18:49working on what was your motivation in
- 18:51sharing Ferrari with Gibney was in
- 19:00charge of that project so that was not
- 19:02it
- 19:03yes Alex wanted to talk to Ferrari then
- 19:07that was done on his own you got that
- 19:10Alex about that
- 19:11you didn't Nix it though you didn't say
- 19:13no hang on a second you can't do this no
- 19:17I mean you'd have to alex is I think
- 19:19more independent than that and I don't
- 19:21think that he would have I don't think
- 19:25we operate Ferrari though obviously you
- 19:28know you paid million a million dollars
- 19:29to Ferrari over the years you could have
- 19:31said listen please don't talk to this
- 19:33guy I mean yeah so why didn't you why
- 19:46didn't I say what don't speak to give me
- 19:48don't do anything here Micheli this
- 19:51could this is a house of cards it's
- 19:52gonna come tumbling down and it's gonna
- 19:53bring you and me and everybody we know
- 19:55down with us I don't know I was at that
- 19:59point I was involved I wasn't worried
- 20:02about I knew that that this was all
- 20:05going to be out whether the via
- 20:08documentaries or books early so our
- 20:12cases with testimony depositions etc
- 20:16okay did Michaela Ferrari ever offered
- 20:20to supply you with a motor for your bike
- 20:24and did you ever consider using a motor
- 20:27for your bike well it this is
- 20:30interesting right because it's degrees
- 20:31of like what's the difference between
- 20:32using the best EPO and using a motor I'm
- 20:35kind of interested we're hearing that
- 20:37the motors and mechanical doping is
- 20:40something that there's a big story brew
- 20:42and something's going to break and you
- 20:44know it would be very interesting to
- 20:46hear like you were you guys were the
- 20:48best and you were determined to win from
- 20:5099 onwards and it's around this time we
- 20:52think that the Hungarian inventor starts
- 20:55to offer people stuff and if I was if I
- 20:58was in possession of a motor the first
- 20:59person I would go to would be you and
- 21:00say here listen what do you think okay
- 21:06and your point did you ever use a motor
- 21:09so I just told you absolutely not and
- 21:12there's a as a matter of interest why
- 21:14what's the difference we doing that and
- 21:16take an EPO we yeah what are you are you
- 21:22a complete rookie what are you talking
- 21:24that in 1999 nobody even knew you could
- 21:27put a motors or four motorcycles what do
- 21:30you I mean are you out of your mind
- 21:34now like look seriously
- 21:39first of all and I know that that's
- 21:41topical I know that there has been a
- 21:43rider caught with a motor over the motor
- 21:45and the bike but I mean are you crazy
- 21:50no I'm just I'm just talking to people
- 21:52who are saying that there's a big story
- 21:54about motors comon and I'm interested to
- 21:55get your perspective on it and see if
- 21:57anybody ever offered you one okay okay
- 22:02okay you said that nobody ever offered
- 22:04you one I mentioned Kimmage earlier is
- 22:06the the Kimmage and Walsh on the list of
- 22:08people that maybe you could make amends
- 22:09or atone to kimeta obviously you tweeted
- 22:12him saying that he should do the
- 22:12interview at 1-0 car and he said no
- 22:14because obviously a former and other
- 22:16journalists had already been booked for
- 22:17that which would have been very bad for
- 22:18him from his perspective he he followed
- 22:21up with a tweet in public DM question
- 22:24mark I presume that the DM was a why
- 22:27don't we just have an interview without
- 22:28an audience
- 22:29will you grant him that interview
- 22:31without an audience yeah because I don't
- 22:38I mean I had one interaction with Paul
- 22:41and that was at the press conference in
- 22:42California I didn't handle it right I
- 22:44mean I'd love to but it's in an
- 22:47interview over a beer or whatever I took
- 22:49was Paul anytime hey my bad I'm sorry I
- 22:52was a complete dick yeah
- 22:55the the tone of his direct messages I
- 22:58mean their private messages I don't know
- 23:01if he feels like I'd be violating any
- 23:03sort of code there if I reveal those but
- 23:06yes he wants to do an interview I feel
- 23:09like it's he doesn't he's not a fan of
- 23:12the one xerocon it's not a fan of the
- 23:15organizers but I don't think it's fair
- 23:18to them to get in the middle of that I
- 23:21think there's a time and a place for he
- 23:24and I to sit down but should be told I
- 23:28don't know Paul Kimmage I don't have
- 23:30anything against ball games so I mean I
- 23:32had again there was that one interaction
- 23:34which I'll fully cop to and confess to
- 23:37that that I was out of line the [ __ ]
- 23:39other than that I'm happy to sit down
- 23:42with them at some point
- 23:43what am i David Walsh David you talk
- 23:48about making amends I mean some of these
- 23:50things
- 23:52you either make personal amends you make
- 23:56financial amends David David situation
- 24:00has been settled and it's a confidential
- 24:03matter and I can't I can't comment on
- 24:05that you can't comment on that but yeah
- 24:09so we're never gonna it's unlucky given
- 24:11that confidentiality that we're ever
- 24:13gonna see an interview between you two
- 24:14at some point in the future or maybe you
- 24:16know you might stick on your podcast I
- 24:19thought that would be actually but I
- 24:22don't I don't I don't know that that's
- 24:24gonna happen anytime soon would you put
- 24:27the Ferrari on your podcast and go
- 24:28through the details of of what you guys
- 24:30did together you know you know do you
- 24:33know the name of the podcast the forward
- 24:36forward so the forward is really its
- 24:42forward and so going back and talking
- 24:44about open in the 90s and talking about
- 24:46the opening in the early 2000s that's
- 24:48not forward and and and I know that that
- 24:51probably doesn't sit well with you or
- 24:54others and and that's okay you could you
- 24:57can choose not to listen but it's a
- 24:59forward podcast and it's my podcast and
- 25:02it's going to be people in subjects that
- 25:05that I think are interesting but look
- 25:08it's not the reverse podcast I do think
- 25:11that there's a big chance for you to
- 25:13step forward and play a role with
- 25:15anti-doping and have a credibility with
- 25:18the audience as somebody who has been
- 25:21through this but there is still that
- 25:24sense that we don't know exactly what
- 25:26happened and we don't really know the
- 25:27true character like I wonder on the
- 25:30podcast in various stages yes I told you
- 25:34at the top of the show here at any time
- 25:37yes and when I say authorities right so
- 25:40the UCI with the CEREC report you sada
- 25:45any time they've wanted to sit down and
- 25:47talk I have talked is it more than twice
- 25:49where you saw des because it we heard
- 25:51those are the first one and then there
- 25:53was the the second one with Travis which
- 25:54is about a year ago
- 25:55have there been more time since no so
- 25:58it's twice it's twice what you sorry
- 25:59yeah twice a second twice abuse father
- 26:02okay and so that
- 26:06I don't know I mean what more can I do
- 26:10that I mean I tell you what I tell you
- 26:12what we want to know we want to be able
- 26:13to believe in cycling so that we we know
- 26:15that in the past team owners have
- 26:17colluded with the organising body and
- 26:22with the star cyclists
- 26:24and this is how that collusion works and
- 26:26actually everybody's responsible for
- 26:28that as the star cyclists and I think
- 26:30that actually it would help to implicate
- 26:33the sport and your role in the sport and
- 26:35actually maybe ease a little bit of the
- 26:37pressure if you also said well yeah okay
- 26:39so this is how this whole thing worked
- 26:41when the sponsors wanted to turn a blind
- 26:44eye they turned a blind eye when the
- 26:46race organizers wanted to turn a blind
- 26:48eye here's how we managed that when the
- 26:50governing body wants to turn a blind eye
- 26:52here's how we did that and those bits
- 26:54and pieces have been dragged into the
- 26:56light by the books and by some of the
- 26:58documentaries and it was really
- 27:00interesting to me to hear that you
- 27:00haven't read that many of the books and
- 27:02you didn't watch the movies until you
- 27:04watch the program because you were
- 27:06interviewing the star of it and so I'm
- 27:08not really sure if you know exactly
- 27:09what's out there but if you were to sit
- 27:11down and tell everybody over a short
- 27:13period of time it's done it's over and
- 27:15then we can all begin to move on but at
- 27:17the moment we all feel like actually I
- 27:20don't know what the truth is I don't
- 27:21know how this whole system works yeah
- 27:25you don't bite us well outside of
- 27:31sitting down with the authorities and
- 27:33telling them everything I know you know
- 27:35what what the governing body decides to
- 27:37do is it I mean we saw what they decided
- 27:40to do it right the report comes out and
- 27:42like I said it was panned so whether or
- 27:46not that collusion with riders and teams
- 27:48and sponsors and the governing body
- 27:50exist today I have no idea I guess it's
- 27:56the architecture of how it existed in
- 27:57the past that would be interesting to
- 27:58help prevent it in the future but okay
- 27:59so we've covered that there's one last
- 28:01thing I wanted if you haven't read the
- 28:02books and you haven't seen the movies
- 28:05you're not entirely sure how you're
- 28:07portrayed in them I guess you have a
- 28:09fair idea but at various stages in them
- 28:10people refer to you as a pathological
- 28:13liar and in one case the guy says after
- 28:17the deposition in 2006 either all the
- 28:19scientists were
- 28:20this guy's a psychopath and I'm
- 28:22wondering when you read that and you see
- 28:24the reports and when people come back
- 28:25and say this is what these guys have
- 28:27said about you do you recognize yourself
- 28:31um I mean I was definitely stuck in a
- 28:35pattern there of not being truthful and
- 28:37and the brazenness of that denials and
- 28:43the defenses and it's embarrassing I am
- 28:48reminded of that from time to time and I
- 28:51don't like that and so what the good
- 28:53news is is look I get to come to Dublin
- 28:55I get to sit there for 90 minutes if I
- 28:59had done it five years ago I would have
- 29:00bullshitted you the entire time and so I
- 29:03get to sit there and just just say it
- 29:06the way it is and some will be happy
- 29:09some will not be happy some for some it
- 29:12won't be enough for some it will be too
- 29:14much and yeah that's that's if you think
- 29:21I roll around every day and worry about
- 29:24what they told you about I'm not gonna
- 29:25worry about that right I'm gonna live my
- 29:26life had high heart full and be as
- 29:30honest and it's transparent as I can
- 29:32going forward and again we're all in
- 29:35process here right so some people
- 29:37they'll be ok with it some people will
- 29:40say no that's that's not good enough and
- 29:42it never will be good enough and I
- 29:43understand that I understand a man and
- 29:47that's just that's just the walk that I
- 29:50have to walk ok - we've got to go I
- 29:51understand the two final quick questions
- 29:53where are you where are your jerseys are
- 29:54they open your house on display at the
- 29:56moment absolutely and and because Yohan
- 30:03still has the manager of seven times
- 30:05Tour de France and his Twitter bio could
- 30:06be expected to see to come back to yours
- 30:08at some point I don't know but that's a
- 30:16fascinating question and I look it's
- 30:21like when George let me just give you an
- 30:24example when George Hincapie goes to an
- 30:26event and is announced right they
- 30:29introduce him right they say George
- 30:31Hincapie who rode on nine
- 30:34in Tour de France winning teams and
- 30:37nobody questions the breeze claps and
- 30:39says that's great
- 30:39alright so the seven for me one for
- 30:42Contador and one for Cadel Evans nobody
- 30:44says anything but if I were to go to an
- 30:47event and announce myself as a
- 30:49seven-time Tour de France what are
- 30:50people people would lose their [ __ ]
- 30:52right so it's it's a bit hypocritical
- 30:57but the but the event is too great and
- 31:00too grand to not have a winner
- 31:01alright so that's that's where I always
- 31:03get to like you you clearly have an
- 31:06opinion
- 31:06your listeners have an opinion I don't
- 31:08know what those opinions are but my
- 31:12peers have an opinion about it too
- 31:13alright so I don't know it's it's a it's
- 31:18a tough one that I think will take 50 or
- 31:21100 years to sort out what do you think
- 31:24of the Bradley Wiggins stuff I don't
- 31:31know I'm not I'm not surprised by that
- 31:35but I mean he was theoretically he was
- 31:39within the rules so there's not much we
- 31:43can do about that and marginal gains
- 31:45having been through what you went
- 31:47through to win your tours do you believe
- 31:48in marginal gains and Skye again like I
- 31:51told you at the beginning in the show I
- 31:53mean I people asked him all the time
- 31:55about this stuff and I I'd love to
- 31:58answer the question but I'm so detached
- 32:00from the sport like nobody nobody in the
- 32:02sport of cycling is gonna talk to him he
- 32:04right if they know something that they
- 32:06want to share that they don't come to me
- 32:08I'm the last person but anybody that
- 32:11cycling is going to talk to about that
- 32:12stuff so I I mean I man I'd love to give
- 32:15you an answer but I don't I don't have
- 32:17the answer Lance Armstrong quite happy
- 32:20in show tonight thanks a million
- 32:27OTB gold the very best of off the ball
