- 0:00So, I talked about Tupac getting shot
- 0:02and you wanted me to talk about what
- 0:04Suge Knight did. So, let's talk about
- 0:07what Suge Knight did. Now, the story of
- 0:09course starts with this guy, Suge. And I
- 0:12talked about him in the Tupac video I
- 0:15did about a week or so ago. So, Suge was
- 0:17the guy driving the car when Tupac got
- 0:20shot. Now, as you already know, during
- 0:22this time, Suge is the CEO of his own
- 0:25record label, Death Row Records, and he
- 0:28has a reputation for being a very
- 0:30aggressive guy. He and his goons are
- 0:32known to use gangster tactics to, you
- 0:35know, get what they want. Like, you
- 0:36probably heard the rumor of him hanging
- 0:38Vanilla Ice off a balcony to get him to
- 0:41sign over royalties for the song Ice Ice
- 0:44Baby. Now, whether that's true or not, I
- 0:46I don't know, but that's the kind of guy
- 0:48he's known to be. Now, after Tupac's
- 0:51death, Suge gets arrested for violating
- 0:54his probation over that fight where he
- 0:56and Tupac and others attacked a guy in a
- 0:58hotel lobby. You probably remember that.
- 1:01Now, eventually in 1997, Suge has a
- 1:04probation hearing and he tries to argue
- 1:06that he was merely trying to break up
- 1:09the fight in the hotel lobby, not get
- 1:11involved. But security footage shows him
- 1:15kicking a guy who was on the ground, so
- 1:17clearly he was involved. And so the
- 1:19judge rules that he violated his
- 1:21probation and he gets sentenced to nine
- 1:24years in prison. Now, like I said, Suge
- 1:27owns Death Row Records. And sort of
- 1:30around the time that he's in prison,
- 1:32some of the biggest artists on Death Row
- 1:35start leaving, including guys you may
- 1:37have heard of like Dr. Dre and Snoop
- 1:40Dogg. and they each leave under
- 1:42different circumstances, but part of the
- 1:45reason is because Death Row Records was
- 1:47a really apparently violent and toxic
- 1:50environment and they wanted to get out.
- 1:52Anyway, after only 4 years, 10 months in
- 1:55prison, Suge gets released and it's now
- 1:592001. And by this point, he's gone from
- 2:03being one of the biggest music execs in
- 2:05hip hop to a much much less successful
- 2:09music exec. And with all of his big
- 2:11artists now out of the label, eventually
- 2:14Death Row Records goes bankrupt and
- 2:17later gets sold off. And so now he ain't
- 2:20getting all that money or power or
- 2:22attention that he used to get. And it
- 2:25seems like Suge really really wants all
- 2:28that back. I mean, who wouldn't? And so
- 2:31years pass and it's now 2014 and Suge is
- 2:3549 at this point. And so one night he's
- 2:38at One Oak nightclub in West Hollywood
- 2:41and there's a MTV Music Video Awards
- 2:44pre-party there hosted by Chris Brown.
- 2:47And so Suge is there and he's just, you
- 2:49know, hanging out, having a good time, I
- 2:51guess. And then suddenly, boom, a man
- 2:54pulls a gun on him and blam blam, he
- 2:57shoots Suge multiple times. Then the
- 3:00shooter takes off and flees the scene
- 3:03and police are never able to charge this
- 3:06guy and he never gets caught. Like to
- 3:08this day that guy has never been caught.
- 3:11Anyway, pretty quickly an ambulance
- 3:13takes Suge to the hospital and lucky for
- 3:16him he survives. A few days later he's
- 3:19recovered well enough that he's allowed
- 3:21to leave the hospital. So he ends up
- 3:24being fine. But here's the thing. Suge
- 3:27believes that Dr. Dre was the one behind
- 3:30the shooting. Like that maybe Dre had
- 3:33hired a guy to come into the club and
- 3:35try and kill him. And why does Suge
- 3:38think Dr. Dre tried to have him killed?
- 3:40Well, after Dre left Death Row Records,
- 3:43he went on to do his own thing. And
- 3:45eventually he created and sold his audio
- 3:48company, Beats Electronics. You know,
- 3:50they make those overpriced headphones.
- 3:52But he sells this company to Apple for
- 3:54about $3 billion. And Suge, he believes
- 3:58he's owed some of that money. He claims
- 4:01that Dre signed some sort of lifetime
- 4:04management deal with him and that now
- 4:06Suge is owed $300 million of that sale
- 4:10to Apple. And that also Dre tried to
- 4:13have him killed so that he wouldn't have
- 4:15to pay him. Now, there's no evidence
- 4:18that we know of to support this claim
- 4:20that Dre actually tried to have him
- 4:22killed, but whatever. This is what Suge
- 4:25believes. And so one day in 2015, he
- 4:28decides it's time to go and talk to Dr.
- 4:31Dre in person, meet him face to face.
- 4:35Why? Because around this time, Dr. Dre
- 4:38is currently on set filming. Uh he's
- 4:40working on a commercial for the movie
- 4:42about the rap group NWA. The movie's
- 4:45called Straight Out of Compton. You
- 4:47probably remember it. Now, Suge is going
- 4:49to be portrayed in this movie, you know,
- 4:52since it's a true story. And Suge knows
- 4:54that and he doesn't like it. I mean, he
- 4:56knows they're likely gonna make him look
- 4:58like a piece of [ __ ] And at the very
- 5:00least, he wants to get paid for his
- 5:03likeness. And so Suge rolls up to the
- 5:06set. And he gets there and this guy sees
- 5:09him, Bone. Bone is a consultant on the
- 5:12movie, and he's working as a security
- 5:14guard for this promotional shoot. And
- 5:17Bone is not about to let Suge get on set
- 5:20because everyone knows Suge. Everyone
- 5:22knows about his beef with Dre and Chu
- 5:25is, you know, well known for
- 5:26intimidating and threatening people. Not
- 5:29to mention, Dr. Dre has a restraining
- 5:31order against him. And so Bone is like,
- 5:34"Get the [ __ ] out of here, man." And
- 5:36pretty quickly, Bone and Suge get into
- 5:38an argument and they're yelling at each
- 5:41other. And this draws the attention of
- 5:43some sheriff's deputies who are on the
- 5:45set. So these deputies, they come over
- 5:48and they tell Suge that he has to leave.
- 5:50And so he does leave and while he's
- 5:53driving away he gets a call from this
- 5:55guy Terry Carter. Terry Carter is a
- 5:58music exec himself and a businessman and
- 6:01he's cool with Suge and also with some
- 6:04of the people involved in this
- 6:06production. He's sort of a peacemaker in
- 6:08the community. And so Suge tells him
- 6:11something like, "I'm tired of being
- 6:12disrespected. I'm just trying to meet
- 6:14with Dre." And so Terry Carter tells
- 6:17Suge, you know, to calm down and to meet
- 6:19him at a friend's house, which is near
- 6:21this burger joint a few blocks away. And
- 6:24there, you know, they can talk and sort
- 6:26this whole thing out. And so Suge drives
- 6:29over to this friend's house near the
- 6:30burger joint. And at some point, Terry
- 6:33Carter gets there and he's waiting and
- 6:35Suge pulls up in his truck just outside
- 6:38the parking lot. And the two, they start
- 6:41talking through their car windows. But
- 6:43then suddenly Bone shows up there. I
- 6:46don't know. He must have followed them
- 6:48there or something. But he shows up
- 6:50there and he walks over to Shook's truck
- 6:53and pow pow, he starts punching him
- 6:55through the window and Terry Carter gets
- 6:57out of his car to probably, I don't
- 6:59know, mediate or stop the fight because,
- 7:01you know, he's that kind of guy. Now,
- 7:04normally Suge would likely get out and
- 7:06fight him, but he's still recovering
- 7:09from being shot at the Chris Brown party
- 7:11a few months before, so he's not exactly
- 7:14in a position to punch anyone. So,
- 7:16instead of fighting, he drives a few
- 7:18feet away from Bone into the parking lot
- 7:20of the burger joint, and he stays in his
- 7:23truck, probably hoping that Bone will
- 7:25leave him alone. But Bone doesn't leave.
- 7:28He runs up to Suge's truck again and he
- 7:31keeps punching him through the window.
- 7:33Now, at this point, Suge has had enough
- 7:36and he's super pissed off. And you know,
- 7:39this guy already has a temper. I mean,
- 7:41he can't just sit there and take punches
- 7:43from Bone. He's not going to let that
- 7:45slide. So, he puts his truck in reverse
- 7:48and bam, he hits Bone with it, knocking
- 7:50him down. Then, he puts the truck in
- 7:53drive and skirt, he speeds off. And when
- 7:56he does, boom, he kind of runs over Bone
- 7:58again, catching his leg under the truck.
- 8:01But also, boom, he hits Terry Carter and
- 8:04accidentally runs him over. And
- 8:07unfortunately, Terry Carter doesn't
- 8:10survive. Then Suge flees the scene. And
- 8:14eventually the police arrive and they
- 8:17start investigating. And immediately
- 8:19they find out that Suge is the one
- 8:21responsible. And ultimately, Suge knows
- 8:24he's screwed. And so he goes to the
- 8:26local police station and he surrenders
- 8:28himself. Here's his mug shot. And at the
- 8:31end of it all, Suge gets charged with
- 8:33murder, attempted murder, and a hit and
- 8:35run. And he eventually takes a plea deal
- 8:38and he gets sentenced to 28 years in
- 8:41prison.
