1. 0:00Everyday our squad rolled through the
2. 0:01village in [music] Iraq while all the
3. 0:02village kids ran beside us, completely
4. 0:05mesmerized by our tanks. [music] They
5. 0:06were skinny and always looked hungry, so
6. 0:08we threw them granola bars and fruit
7. 0:10cups from our MRE packs and watched
8. 0:12their faces light up every time they bit
9. 0:14into candy [music] they'd never got the
10. 0:15chance to taste. But there was one kid
11. 0:17who was bigger than the rest. Every time
12. 0:19we threw something,
13. 0:20>> [music]
14. 0:20>> he'd shove the smaller kids to the dirt
15. 0:22to get it. And if another kid caught
16. 0:23something, he'd punch them until they
17. 0:25gave it over. It broke my heart seeing
18. 0:26the other kids flinch [music] when he
19. 0:27came over as they'd rather stay hungry
20. 0:29than be beaten by him. We tried throwing
21. 0:31food past him toward the smaller kids,
22. 0:33but he just [music] tackled the smaller
23. 0:34kids to the ground and grab it anyway.
24. 0:36One afternoon, I tossed a wrapped candy
25. 0:38to the back and a tiny girl no older
26. 0:40than six caught it in her cupped [music]
27. 0:42hands. She stared at her palm like she
28. 0:43was holding a diamond and I could tell
29. 0:45it was the first thing she'd ever
30. 0:46caught. But before she could even close
31. 0:48her fingers, the bully swept her ankles.
32. 0:50She crashed into the dirt and the candy
33. 0:52rolled out of her hand. He popped it
34. 0:54into his mouth and walked off chewing
35. 0:56and smirking while she cried in the
36. 0:57dust. My jaw locked so hard my teeth
37. 1:00ached and that was the moment I'd had
38. 1:01enough. I grabbed a nearby empty water
39. 1:03bottle, did my business in it, and
40. 1:05leaned out of the turret holding the
41. 1:06bottle up high. "Who wants lemonade?"
42. 1:08The bully's head snapped back around and
43. 1:10he came sprinting, shoving every smaller
44. 1:12kid to the ground in the process. I
45. 1:14chucked it right at him and when he
46. 1:15caught it, he immediately dropped a
47. 1:17smaller kid to the floor to make sure
48. 1:18nobody took it from him. He clutched the
49. 1:20bottle to his chest with a grin, clearly
50. 1:22excited about his lemonade. I watched
51. 1:24[music] with the biggest smirk as he
52. 1:26twisted the cap, then tilted back his
53. 1:28head and took a long, greedy gulp. His
54. 1:30eyes immediately went wide. He sprayed
55. 1:32it out across the dirt, gagging and
56. 1:34choking. The bottle flew from his hand
57. 1:36as he dropped to his knees, [music]
58. 1:38heaving while his eyes watered. The
59. 1:39other kids began laughing hysterically.
60. 1:42Our squad took out our MRE packs and
61. 1:44threw snacks to the kids, making sure
62. 1:46every kid got something while the bully
63. 1:48was too busy getting sick to take
64. 1:50anything from them.
