  1. 0:00Everyone is welcome to my YouTube
  2. 0:02channel. Today we are going to talk
  3. 0:04about the accident that happened to a
  4. 0:06man named Aaron Rston. Let's go to the
  5. 0:09video. Aaron Rston was a 27-year-old
  6. 0:12outdoor enthusiast, mountaineer, and
  7. 0:14mechanical engineer. He had a passion
  8. 0:16for exploring the wilderness, often
  9. 0:18embarking on solo hiking and climbing
  10. 0:20trips. By the time of the accident, he
  11. 0:23had already quit his job to focus on his
  12. 0:25dream of climbing all Colorado's 14,000
  13. 0:28ft peaks alone. On April 26th, 2003,
  14. 0:32Rston set out for a solo adventure in
  15. 0:34Utah's Canyon Lands National Park, a
  16. 0:36remote and rugged area filled with
  17. 0:38narrow canyons. His destination was Blue
  18. 0:41John Canyon, a slot canyon known for its
  19. 0:43beautiful but dangerous terrain.
  20. 0:45Rostston was wellprepared for a typical
  21. 0:47hike, but made one crucial mistake. He
  22. 0:49didn't tell anyone where he was going.
  23. 0:52This would prove to be a
  24. 0:53life-threatening decision. As he
  25. 0:55explored the narrow canyon, a massive
  26. 0:57800-lb boulder suddenly shifted while he
  27. 1:00was climbing down a rock formation. The
  28. 1:02boulder pinned his right arm against the
  29. 1:04canyon wall, trapping him in place. At
  30. 1:07first, Rolston remained calm and tried
  31. 1:09everything to free himself. He attempted
  32. 1:12to move the boulder by pushing and
  33. 1:13chipping at it with his cheap, dull
  34. 1:15multi-tool knife, but it was completely
  35. 1:17immovable. As the hours turned into
  36. 1:19days, his food and water supplies
  37. 1:21started to run out, and his chances of
  38. 1:23survival grew slim.
  39. 1:25For five excruciating days, 127 hours,
  40. 1:28Rston remained trapped in the canyon,
  41. 1:30enduring freezing temperatures at night
  42. 1:32and scorching heat during the day. He
  43. 1:34had only one burrito, a bit of water,
  44. 1:36and some candy bars. When his water ran
  45. 1:39out, he drank his own urine to stay
  46. 1:41hydrated. He screamed for help, but
  47. 1:44being in a remote canyon, no one could
  48. 1:46hear him. He tried using his climbing
  49. 1:48gear to lift the boulder, but it
  50. 1:50wouldn't budge. As time passed, he
  51. 1:52accepted that he might die there. He
  52. 1:55recorded farewell messages to his family
  53. 1:57using his camera and carved his name,
  54. 1:59birth date, and the expected date of his
  55. 2:01death into the rock.
  56. 2:05My name's Arin
  57. 2:07Rston. My parents are Don and Larry
  58. 2:10Rston of Englewood,
  59. 2:12Colorado. Whoever finds this, please
  60. 2:15make an attempt to get it to them.
  61. 2:20be sure of it. I would appreciate it.
  62. 2:23By the sixth day, Rston realized he had
  63. 2:25only one way to survive. He had to cut
  64. 2:27off his own arm. He had already
  65. 2:30attempted it before, but the knife was
  66. 2:32too dull to cut through bone. That's
  67. 2:34when he had a realization he could break
  68. 2:36his bones first. Using force against the
  69. 2:39rock, he snapped both the radius and
  70. 2:41bones in his right arm. Then using his
  71. 2:44cheap dull multi-tool, he slowly soared
  72. 2:46through his muscle, tendons, and nerves,
  73. 2:48the most agonizing part. The most
  74. 2:51painful moment came when he had to cut
  75. 2:53through the main nerve, sending a shock
  76. 2:55wave of pain through his body. Finally,
  77. 2:58after about 1 hour, he completely freed
  78. 3:00himself, but he was still deep in the
  79. 3:01canyon, far from rescue. Now, onearmed
  80. 3:04and bleeding, Rston knew he had only a
  81. 3:07short time before he bled to death. He
  82. 3:09wrapped his arm in a makeshift
  83. 3:11tourniquet and climbed out of the
  84. 3:12canyon. Repelled down a 65 ft drop
  85. 3:16one-handed, hike over 6 milesi in the
  86. 3:18desert heat with severe blood loss and
  87. 3:21dehydration. After hours of walking, he
  88. 3:23encountered a family of hikers who
  89. 3:25immediately gave him water and called
  90. 3:26for help. A rescue helicopter soon
  91. 3:29arrived and he was eleed to safety.
  92. 3:32Doctors were amazed that he had
  93. 3:33survived. His quick thinking and
  94. 3:36determination saved his life. He lost
  95. 3:38his right arm but gained a new
  96. 3:40perspective on life. Rston later wrote a
  97. 3:43book about his experience between a rock
  98. 3:45and a hard place which became the basis
  99. 3:47for the 2010 film 127 hours starring
  100. 3:49James Franco. Today Rston is a
  101. 3:52motivational speaker inspiring people
  102. 3:54worldwide with his story of resilience,
  103. 3:56survival, and the power of the human
  104. 3:58will. Despite losing his arm, he
  105. 4:01continues to climb mountains and live
  106. 4:03life to the fullest. His story remains
  107. 4:05one of the most incredible survival
  108. 4:07tales ever recorded, proving that the
  109. 4:09human spirit is capable of overcoming
  110. 4:11even the most impossible challenges.
