  25. 1:10questions for Klaus at the end of this
  26. 1:12seminar this will be a one-hour session
  27. 1:14first with the presentation then the Q&A
  28. 1:18and as I said first this is a series and
  29. 1:21so this is just very first edition
  30. 1:23there's lots more to come and I'm going

  32. 1:26webinars towards the end of this session
  33. 1:29and a few dates
  34. 1:31Klaus is joining us from Munich before I
  35. 1:34switch over to him let me tell you first
  36. 1:36that the presentation and of course the
  37. 1:40views are representing the views of
  38. 1:44Klaus Marilyn irt are not necessarily of
  39. 1:46the HPB TV Association thank you very
  40. 1:50much and now over to you Klaus for your
  41. 1:52presentation
  42. 1:56yeah thank you very much young for your
  43. 1:59introduction and welcome to all of you
  44. 2:03to this first webinar on HP B TV I'm
  45. 2:09going to share my screen now waiting for
  46. 2:13the invitation to do so yes so here we
  47. 2:27are so you should see my screen now
  48. 2:38right yuck
  49. 2:39yes switch here okay so welcome again so
  50. 2:53the topic is HP B TV and as its name
  51. 2:56suggests HP BTB is dealing with the TV
  52. 3:00so the TV set is still something very
  53. 3:03interesting in the households big
  54. 3:06attractive screen in many living rooms
  55. 3:09TV that has been broadcasting for
  56. 3:12decades but now with the arrival of
  57. 3:16Internet of course it is very obvious
  58. 3:19that these attractive TV screen can
  59. 3:22become much more attractive by
  60. 3:24additional services brought via web and
  61. 3:27to the screens having much more niche
  62. 3:29needs individual needs bringing much
  63. 3:33much more content on this attractive
  64. 3:37screen and there are quite a number of
  65. 3:39OTT services which started on PCs on
  66. 3:43mobiles but but which have meanwhile its
  67. 3:46most significant growth on the TV screen
  68. 3:50so the TV screen when connected to Web
  69. 3:54Services definitely has significant
  70. 3:57added values and TV manufacturer have
  71. 4:01been very early in discovering this and
  72. 4:04have brought Smart TVs to the market and
  73. 4:08there are many web services
  74. 4:10as you can see here from the
  75. 4:12manufacturer portals
  76. 4:14however TVs are not PCs and it's not
  77. 4:19easy possible for both technical and
  78. 4:22commercial and also conceptual reasons
  79. 4:24to consume Web Services just simply on
  80. 4:27the TV screen so TVs call for dedicated
  81. 4:31web browser profiles for dedicated
  82. 4:35redoing of services and this is what you
  83. 4:38can see here in the indicated in the
  84. 4:41manufacturers portals so many apps many
  85. 4:44services but which are really redone for
  86. 4:47TV consumption not only the manufactures
  87. 4:52but meanwhile also a number of big us
  88. 4:55players are aiming to be present on this
  89. 4:57attractive screen and you see some
  90. 5:01prominent examples of this they are
  91. 5:03doing so either by our external devices
  92. 5:05by sticks or set up boxes connected via
  93. 5:08HDMI or are doing so by our Android TV
  94. 5:13and all of this is bringing lots of
  95. 5:16added value lots of added web content to
  96. 5:20the benefit of the consumer still all
  97. 5:24these approaches so the manufacturers
  98. 5:27portal and the sticks and boxes and also
  99. 5:30Android TV leave two issues open so
  100. 5:34there is much more fragmentation than we
  101. 5:37are used to see than other domains of
  102. 5:40the web market so the different
  103. 5:43approaches have a different
  104. 5:44technological concepts and profiles and
  105. 5:47so the services usually have to be
  106. 5:50adopted for each of these platforms
  107. 5:52individually so this is the first issue
  108. 5:55with this flat fee Smart TV platforms
  109. 5:59the relatively significant fragmentation
  110. 6:03complete compared to other web devices
  111. 6:07another point is there is no or at least
  112. 6:11no qualified integration of broadcast
  113. 6:13and web services so on devices like that
  114. 6:17you have linear broadcast services and
  115. 6:20you have also web services
  116. 6:23such these platforms do not allow to
  117. 6:26create really hybrid world to combine
  118. 6:29broadcast and broadband assets and
  119. 6:32exactly these are the two points
  120. 6:34addressed by HP b TV so these are the
  121. 6:38unique selling points of HP b TV HP b TV
  122. 6:41is an acronym for hybrid broadcast
  123. 6:44broadband TV and this is HP b TV the
  124. 6:49answer to both of these issues so first
  125. 6:51of all HP b TV defines a standardized TV
  126. 6:55browser profile so technological profile
  127. 6:58technique your technological profile
  128. 7:01that can be applied across all sorts of
  129. 7:04TV sets or brands so really standard for
  130. 7:08web on TV and the other aspect beyond
  131. 7:11the pure standardization is that it
  132. 7:14provides lots of cross linking options
  133. 7:16between broadcast and broadband so it
  134. 7:19really allows to integrate broadcast and
  135. 7:22broadband to combined
  136. 7:25user experience and the shortest way to
  137. 7:28indicate how this looks in practice is
  138. 7:31then - with this sketch done by swiss
  139. 7:35television so one click from broadcast
  140. 7:38to broadband what you're seeing here in
  141. 7:40the background on this TV so the
  142. 7:42background image is broadcast and then
  143. 7:45clicking the red button brings
  144. 7:48additional web menus on your screen web
  145. 7:52menu is done by the broadcasters guiding
  146. 7:55you into many more contents than
  147. 7:59provided via Internet so this is HP B TV
  148. 8:04at its very shortest HP b TV is
  149. 8:07implemented so HP b the standards behind
  150. 8:11that are implemented and and developed
  151. 8:13by the HP b TV association so the HP b
  152. 8:17TV association is the common point where
  153. 8:19many market participants here you see
  154. 8:21all the logos and indicated where many
  155. 8:24market participants meet to make this
  156. 8:27possible
  157. 8:28eh BB TV Association is 10 years old now
  158. 8:32and it really has numbers out of C
  159. 8:35manufacturers broadcasters platform
  160. 8:37does technology companies so there is a
  161. 8:40good and distribution over various parts
  162. 8:43of the market and this is very good to
  163. 8:46have nice markets acceptance of the
  164. 8:49resulting standards the core tasks of
  165. 8:51this association is to develop the
  166. 8:54specifications which are then
  167. 8:57implemented on devices and in
  168. 8:58applications and to provide additional
  169. 9:00resources to support testing and
  170. 9:03addressing interoperability issues but
  171. 9:06the core thing is really the standards
  172. 9:09and this graphics indicates you the HP
  173. 9:14btv internal development process for
  174. 9:16specification and test resources within
  175. 9:18the HP PTV association we have a good
  176. 9:21number of working working groups as
  177. 9:23indicated here and you see the different
  178. 9:27steps which are taken to discuss and
  179. 9:30agree on requirements for new standards
  180. 9:32writing the specification and then
  181. 9:36caring finally for tests and for
  182. 9:39interoperability so this is what's
  183. 9:41happening within the Association the end
  184. 9:45result or the most relevant end result
  185. 9:48is specifications there are a number of
  186. 9:51specifications and with this graphics I
  187. 9:53will guide you through this webinar
  188. 9:57showing all the developments in this
  189. 9:59area so HP btv is publishing its
  190. 10:03specifications via Etsy so the European
  191. 10:06telecommunications standards Institute
  192. 10:08which is the most relevant and
  193. 10:11standardization bodies in digital
  194. 10:13television so ten years ago the first
  195. 10:17version of HP B TV has been published
  196. 10:20two years later an updated version HP b
  197. 10:23TV 1.5 with its main point of adding
  198. 10:27MPEG - adaptive streaming and those
  199. 10:33early versions of the standard have been
  200. 10:35really the the starting point for the
  201. 10:38big HP b TV success in the market I can
  202. 10:42show you here a sketch showing the sale
  203. 10:48of HP B TV devices in Germany
  204. 10:51since 2010 and you see around 2011 and
  205. 10:5512 HP btv arrived really very well in
  206. 10:59the market and since then we we see some
  207. 11:034 million HP B TV sets sold in Germany
  208. 11:08each year so practically all Smart TVs
  209. 11:12sold are HP b TV and all these sales
  210. 11:17have accumulated up to some over 30 at
  211. 11:21least million devices in germany we have
  212. 11:25roughly 37 million households so we have
  213. 11:27roughly as many device cells as we have
  214. 11:31households in germany and this leads to
  215. 11:35approximately 12 to 15 million connected
  216. 11:37HP b TV devices in germany so not every
  217. 11:41TV even if it's a smart TV is connected
  218. 11:44so Smart TV is so much of a standard
  219. 11:47that people just even if they just want
  220. 11:50to buy a simple TV and use it for
  221. 11:52broadcast they usually take a Smart TV
  222. 11:55and into their homes this is an
  223. 12:00interesting study by TR avoid again the
  224. 12:02reference is the German market and here
  225. 12:05you see in practice the effect of having
  226. 12:08HP b TV as a standard for TV platforms
  227. 12:12supporting Smart TVs so the whole area
  228. 12:14is really apps on TVs and you see there
  229. 12:19are many different systems and variants
  230. 12:22so you find Apple TV here the chromecast
  231. 12:25like fire TV but you see that very
  232. 12:29clearly HP b TV is the one with the
  233. 12:32highest market reach and I should
  234. 12:34mention that sometimes of course it's
  235. 12:36combined HP b TV and certainly android
  236. 12:39TV can happen on the same device and the
  237. 12:43same for tyson and others as well so
  238. 12:45this would accumulate up to more than
  239. 12:47100% but the effect of the standard is
  240. 12:50in any case that the total reach of HP b
  241. 12:54TV is by far the largest and this is
  242. 12:57this is the technical reach for the
  243. 13:00different platforms but this is also
  244. 13:03reflected I don't have
  245. 13:05numbers here which are public which I
  246. 13:07can make public but this is reflected
  247. 13:10also in actual usage so it's not only
  248. 13:12the technical reach where HPB TV has
  249. 13:16lead in in this comparison of systems
  250. 13:20but it's also the actual usage another
  251. 13:24market I want to mention shortly because
  252. 13:26I talked so much about Germany now is
  253. 13:28Italy Italy is a relative compared to
  254. 13:32Germany Italy is a relative newcomer in
  255. 13:35the HPP TV area it has some little bit
  256. 13:38less households in in total but already
  257. 13:41more than 3 million connected devices
  258. 13:45which is quite good for such an
  259. 13:47relatively early phase of deploying HPB
  260. 13:51TV they have immediately started using
  261. 13:54the hbb tv2 standard I will mention
  262. 13:57later what you see here is a screenshot
  263. 14:00of the HPB TV website listing
  264. 14:03deployments so please check out if you
  265. 14:06are more interested about deployments in
  266. 14:08other countries and there are other
  267. 14:11countries deploying HPB TV so it's
  268. 14:13practically all of Europe using HPB TV
  269. 14:17it's as you can see it Turkey it's
  270. 14:19Russia but it's also really other parts
  271. 14:22of the world like Australia or even New
  272. 14:25Zealand which have decided to adopt HPB
  273. 14:30TV so far for the standard itself and
  274. 14:35its deployment on devices and market
  275. 14:38reach and of course a very interesting
  276. 14:40very interesting point a very key point
  277. 14:44is of course content and as you can
  278. 14:47imagine video is the the main the main
  279. 14:52relevant type of content to be brought
  280. 14:56to the TV via HTTP TV and there are many
  281. 15:01video portals why our HPB TV you can see
  282. 15:05here screenshots of the video portals of
  283. 15:07the four big broadcasting groups in
  284. 15:09Germany a a DCF RTL boozing South ions
  285. 15:14all of them do their individual HPB TV
  286. 15:16applications they can do so
  287. 15:18so they have their own look and feel
  288. 15:20their own way of presenting content
  289. 15:23giving access to plenty really of video
  290. 15:29content so video portals the big thing
  291. 15:31in hbb TV this is of course not only
  292. 15:34true for Germany but this is the basic
  293. 15:39feature the basic content feature for
  294. 15:42very markets and I have here examples
  295. 15:45from Norway from Turkey from Greece and
  296. 15:50from Australia and I could have added
  297. 15:52and one screenshot for every country
  298. 15:56that is using HPB TV and also many more
  299. 16:01broadcasters are using individually and
  300. 16:04these are the screen shots you have seen
  301. 16:06so this is individual use of HPB TV for
  302. 16:09broadcast individual video portals what
  303. 16:13you're seeing here is another way of
  304. 16:15doing so another concept of doing video
  305. 16:18portals this is having giant video
  306. 16:21portals for a number of broadcasters and
  307. 16:24the example you can see here see here is
  308. 16:26lovest TV in Spain this is a national
  309. 16:30platform bundling video offerings across
  310. 16:33broadcasters you see they agree here and
  311. 16:37it's operational in Spain still in its
  312. 16:41testing phase there is something very
  313. 16:43similar in France which is called salto
  314. 16:46and you can see here also from Stila
  315. 16:48vision TIFF and MCCS the broadcasters
  316. 16:52join in here for a joint HP b TV portal
  317. 16:57which they can give immediate access to
  318. 16:59to their viewers with just one click on
  319. 17:03the red button so for sure on the TV
  320. 17:08free TV content plays a big role and
  321. 17:11free TV means usually funding by ads so
  322. 17:14if it's not public broadcasting then
  323. 17:16free TV content is funded by ads in many
  324. 17:19markets it's still very dominating in
  325. 17:21many markets and so HP BT we can do also
  326. 17:26it's chopped not only to provide video
  327. 17:28content but also to provide additional
  328. 17:32options for the very fundamental ad
  329. 17:36funding model for free TV and I'm
  330. 17:39starting here with an example from
  331. 17:41Turkey so you see the TV picture here so
  332. 17:46this is the broadcast picture and as I
  333. 17:49said HPB TV allows to seamlessly
  334. 17:52integrate broadcast broadband experience
  335. 17:55so when for example switching to a
  336. 17:58channel you can scale the broadcaster
  337. 18:01can with his HP B TV application can
  338. 18:04scale the TV picture and put some ad
  339. 18:07banner around it for a number of seconds
  340. 18:11and if during this number of seconds the
  341. 18:14user presses the red button as you can
  342. 18:17see it indicated here then microsite is
  343. 18:21started of that company doing the ad
  344. 18:24here
  345. 18:24the broadcast can either be cancelled at
  346. 18:26all or can be made smaller as you see
  347. 18:28and then the ad messages can be placed
  348. 18:33here there can be videos that can be
  349. 18:35more interaction people can be asked to
  350. 18:38register themselves for products and so
  351. 18:41on so there is really very good options
  352. 18:44in HP B TV to further develop the
  353. 18:47classical ad model for free TV you can
  354. 18:53go beyond such a first simple step and
  355. 18:59there are a number of approaches we have
  356. 19:02seen in Germany and I'll give you some
  357. 19:04examples from the 7-1 Media Group which
  358. 19:07is very active here in Germany so one
  359. 19:11way of further exploiting the HP PC
  360. 19:15toolbox is to do an individual branding
  361. 19:19so an individual regional local
  362. 19:22targeting so if you can use the IP
  363. 19:25address to detect the the sub code you
  364. 19:28can for example insert into your car at
  365. 19:32HP B TV banner the individual address of
  366. 19:36a single car vendor and you can go
  367. 19:40further and and and offer them test a
  368. 19:44test drive for
  369. 19:45interested customer so you can do
  370. 19:48regional and local targeting you can do
  371. 19:51for example behavioural targeting so
  372. 19:53like for par ship in this example here
  373. 19:56if you know there is a female single
  374. 19:59household you are showing a guy here if
  375. 20:02you're detecting it's a male single
  376. 20:04household so a very obvious example then
  377. 20:06you are showing a lady here you can do
  378. 20:10some targeting of it will be the ad
  379. 20:15banners also related to TV spots which
  380. 20:18have already been seen so to reinforce
  381. 20:21ice the message by bringing exactly
  382. 20:25those ads here as a banner which have
  383. 20:29before been seen in the linear broadcast
  384. 20:33and as an ultimate step HPB TV can even
  385. 20:37address the very fundamental and
  386. 20:39business model of free TV so the the ad
  387. 20:44within the TV program so the ad break
  388. 20:47and the HP B TV toolbox allows to
  389. 20:52substitute the broadcast at break by an
  390. 20:55individually targeted advertising spot
  391. 20:59which is transmitted via IP them
  392. 21:01depending on the targeting and you can
  393. 21:04automatically switch from the linear
  394. 21:06program to an individually targeted IP
  395. 21:09spot and then back again and as you can
  396. 21:12see here this has operationally launched
  397. 21:16almost one year ago so while this can be
  398. 21:20done so I'm going to come back on this
  399. 21:22while this can be done today there are
  400. 21:26certain weaknesses certain your timing
  401. 21:31issues in switching from here to there
  402. 21:33so there is no very good timing
  403. 21:37performance so you may have some
  404. 21:39buffering times and you have some time
  405. 21:41when switching back so you can do it and
  406. 21:43they are doing it but the visual
  407. 21:46performance is not at its optimum and as
  408. 21:50I said I will come back to this later
  409. 21:54of course HPB TV can do more than only
  410. 21:58video portals
  411. 21:59Plus advertising there is a number of
  412. 22:02additional use cases for HP B TV I'm
  413. 22:04going to introduce some of them to you
  414. 22:08and and all of these are actually in
  415. 22:10operation so they are not show cases or
  416. 22:13ideas but all of this is in actual in
  417. 22:15operation today a very simple one is
  418. 22:17improving the teletext service which is
  419. 22:20still very popular in in many countries
  420. 22:22generally being one of them so HP B TV
  421. 22:25can do a nicer GUI for teletext and this
  422. 22:29is done then we have home shopping
  423. 22:31offering of course you can directly
  424. 22:34enter your customer ID into gooeys on
  425. 22:38the TV screen so here you can click the
  426. 22:40red button get into the web GUI or home
  427. 22:45shop in Europe can enter your customer
  428. 22:48ID and can directly do shopping and it's
  429. 22:50very evident that this is of some
  430. 22:53benefit for both the user and also the
  431. 22:57provider of such a service a very
  432. 22:59interesting thing is also gaming you
  433. 23:01wouldn't think that gaming would be so
  434. 23:03popular on TVs but according to reports
  435. 23:07from companies doing that is this quite
  436. 23:09popular and and and quite well used and
  437. 23:12you see here an example where RTL has
  438. 23:16featured so again you see here the the
  439. 23:18broadcast and really the very nice way
  440. 23:21how hbb TV allows to feature stuff so
  441. 23:25when you are switching to RTL you get
  442. 23:27for a few seconds only this overlay
  443. 23:29saying press red and then you can
  444. 23:32participate in these games and you if
  445. 23:35you do so you are really you are in a
  446. 23:38gaming portal but you can still watch
  447. 23:40RTL here so I think this is a very good
  448. 23:42so you're not completely lost so if you
  449. 23:44want to switch back to to RTL you are
  450. 23:46not lost in your gaming world but you
  451. 23:48can keep one eye on the TV program and
  452. 23:51can switch back at any time I think this
  453. 23:54is a very good example of really the
  454. 23:56another good example of the integration
  455. 23:58between broadcast and broadband so the
  456. 24:01teaser here and then the the broadcast
  457. 24:04image here which can be scaled by the
  458. 24:07HPP TV application so there are api's in
  459. 24:10the HPP TV specification
  460. 24:13the HPP TV application for example to
  461. 24:16let this disappear after some seconds
  462. 24:18and then to scale the broadcast here
  463. 24:22another example also an interesting one
  464. 24:25is provision of UHD content via HPB TV
  465. 24:27when we began to standardize HPB TV some
  466. 24:3210 years ago we didn't think of video
  467. 24:34streaming could have really better
  468. 24:36quality than then broadcast today we are
  469. 24:39further this this road and we detect
  470. 24:43that really H PBT we can be a very
  471. 24:46relevant way of distributing UHD to
  472. 24:49customers and already a few years ago
  473. 24:53broadcaster have started to use this
  474. 24:57feature at a number of occasions then
  475. 25:04live streams we can bring additional
  476. 25:06live streaming on the TV also this
  477. 25:08something which has not been in our
  478. 25:10focus in for HPB TV at the very
  479. 25:13beginning so we can have a richer
  480. 25:16content offering of course if we for
  481. 25:20events like the Olympic Games we can
  482. 25:22provide additional categories of sports
  483. 25:24as additional live stream it's very
  484. 25:27lightweight for the user
  485. 25:28he doesn't have to install apps or do do
  486. 25:31complicated things just click the red
  487. 25:33button go into a menu then select the
  488. 25:37sports category he likes and then the
  489. 25:40live streams immediately starts
  490. 25:43something more reasoned on live
  491. 25:45streaming is the replay function which
  492. 25:47has been implemented by all the aad
  493. 25:50programmes just a couple of months ago
  494. 25:55this has technically a specific feature
  495. 25:58so it's based on MPEG DASH live
  496. 26:01streaming as well like the earlier
  497. 26:03mentioned Olympic live streams but the
  498. 26:06very specific feature is that the user
  499. 26:08can jump back in this live stream to a
  500. 26:11specific position until the beginning of
  501. 26:15the relevant content item so this is
  502. 26:18also something rather new in the open
  503. 26:21retail market it's known on IPTV or
  504. 26:24other platforms for a couple of years
  505. 26:26but it's new for the mass retail market
  506. 26:30that just by clicking on the blue button
  507. 26:32you can jump back to the beginning of
  508. 26:35the corresponding show and it's very
  509. 26:38well accepted by the users in Germany
  510. 26:42also based on live streaming so not
  511. 26:45technically something different but
  512. 26:47conceptually and I would like to mention
  513. 26:50that this improving accessibility by
  514. 26:52using HPB TV here you can see and this
  515. 26:57is used by a ID has been used very much
  516. 27:00during the corona crisis is to offer the
  517. 27:05main news and additional information
  518. 27:08also with a signer and here you can see
  519. 27:12the broadcast in the background still
  520. 27:14the broadcast picture and the HP B TV
  521. 27:17menu here is the menu point offering the
  522. 27:20signer and if you activate this you get
  523. 27:23done an IP stream with a broadcast video
  524. 27:26in the background and the signer in the
  525. 27:29foreground
  526. 27:30and finally we sorry we shouldn't forget
  527. 27:35the children TV set is something parents
  528. 27:39like to place their children they don't
  529. 27:43like it so much in sometimes to hand out
  530. 27:46their tablets or mobiles or notebooks to
  531. 27:50children but usually placing childrens
  532. 27:52in front of the TV is something fine and
  533. 27:54as one example I have here also an
  534. 27:57example from Germany from the wdr Mouse
  535. 28:01a very popular program and it's a video
  536. 28:04portal with almost 2000 videos so you
  537. 28:08can see here a good potential for
  538. 28:10entertaining children via HPB TV as well
  539. 28:14so far for a number of usage variants of
  540. 28:19HPB TV mainly as it is today as it is
  541. 28:23dominating the market and this is using
  542. 28:25the features of using the features at
  543. 28:27least of 1.0 and 1.5 now we are for HPB
  544. 28:31TV 1.2 already a number of years ago we
  545. 28:35have published HPB TV has published the
  546. 28:37first version of this
  547. 28:40education a quick look to it shows that
  548. 28:44it's structured in the same way as HPB
  549. 28:46TV one so this is only to give you an
  550. 28:49impression of the latest HPB TV version
  551. 28:51it has more than 300 pages and it
  552. 28:54specifies many normative elements on
  553. 28:57those over 300 pages but it also makes
  554. 29:01reference to a good number of other
  555. 29:03standards from dVB's or the broadcast
  556. 29:06related standard iso standards the web
  557. 29:10standards of course ci+ standards
  558. 29:13standards from the open IPTV forum so
  559. 29:15there are many other specs reused by the
  560. 29:19HBV TV concept in in general I can't go
  561. 29:22into the details here but at least I
  562. 29:25wanted to give you a rough impression of
  563. 29:27how what's the content really of the HPP
  564. 29:30TV and specification is so it's it's
  565. 29:34linking to many other standards to the
  566. 29:36benefit of the industry of course
  567. 29:38because many of these features are
  568. 29:40implemented else so of course the
  569. 29:42browsers and and the video encoding and
  570. 29:46and transmission and things and the
  571. 29:48signaling are implemented for other
  572. 29:50market and segments as well so can be
  573. 29:53then easily reused for HPB TV - so HPB
  574. 29:58TV - in a more and in a more general
  575. 30:03view HPB TV - brings added value added
  576. 30:08features in a number of different
  577. 30:10domains so on the right hand side we see
  578. 30:15more the technological updates - HPB TV
  579. 30:18ah we won so we see the html5 browser
  580. 30:23profile we see a number of new technical
  581. 30:27elements being part of that html5
  582. 30:30browser profiles or making the browser
  583. 30:33more and state-of-the-art and also to
  584. 30:37add new video features which are most of
  585. 30:40them also state-of-the-art in other
  586. 30:43parts of the markets like HEV C for UHD
  587. 30:47or adaptive streaming so this is more
  588. 30:53modernizing the
  589. 30:54platform on the left-hand side we see
  590. 30:57really new features like the
  591. 31:00synchronization of video audio apps and
  592. 31:02second screen integration and for this
  593. 31:06set of features on the left hand side
  594. 31:09with IOT have explored the capabilities
  595. 31:13of these and this is what I'm going to
  596. 31:15show you now so gives you an impression
  597. 31:18about the capabilities of the specific
  598. 31:20capabilities of HP btv to buy a number
  599. 31:24of showcases proof of concepts we with
  600. 31:29IOT made so one is the option of
  601. 31:35launching HP btv applications via mobile
  602. 31:39phone so mobile and and native app it
  603. 31:43can be iOS it can be Android a native
  604. 31:47app can detect that there is an HP B TV
  605. 31:49TV set in the same home network and HP b
  606. 31:53TV provides some api's and options to
  607. 31:56launch applications on these TV sets so
  608. 32:00we can push we can really launch trigger
  609. 32:03the start of HP b TV applications of the
  610. 32:05TV set and subsequently we can
  611. 32:08communicate between both apps so we can
  612. 32:11establish a communication so what you're
  613. 32:13seeing here is the the face where the HP
  614. 32:17b TV app is just started sharing a
  615. 32:19starting screen so only two seconds
  616. 32:22later this HP b TV application would
  617. 32:25play the video i have triggered from the
  618. 32:29tablet here so I've been in the air D
  619. 32:32Android media take app select the video
  620. 32:36and then said clicked on play on the TV
  621. 32:40screen then the Android TV app would
  622. 32:44launch the HPP TV application and tell
  623. 32:46the application which video to play and
  624. 32:48you can also do control the video so we
  625. 32:52can jump forwards and backwards and
  626. 32:54pause and resume and so on so also a
  627. 32:58feature which is as such not completely
  628. 33:00new you know this from chromecast or
  629. 33:02fire TV or other
  630. 33:05platforms but this is something really
  631. 33:08available now in the big retail market
  632. 33:10without any specific apps or platform or
  633. 33:13system so it's just really a feature
  634. 33:17that is available for use another
  635. 33:21feature is the synchronization feature
  636. 33:24and HPB tv2 allows to play IP audience
  637. 33:28in sync with a broadcast video there are
  638. 33:32two versions two variants how you can do
  639. 33:34this one variant is to play the
  640. 33:37additional audio on the speaker's of
  641. 33:40your TV set and this is what I'm sharing
  642. 33:43here with this screen this can be used
  643. 33:45for example to provide additional
  644. 33:47language version so you find here some I
  645. 33:50think it's 8 different language versions
  646. 33:52which are offered to this TV show so
  647. 33:57more than you usefully could include in
  648. 34:00broadcast for the most broadcasters you
  649. 34:03can have additional audio versions not
  650. 34:05only with different languages but also
  651. 34:07for example with improved dialogue in
  652. 34:10touch with intelligibility
  653. 34:13intelligibility so that's a really a
  654. 34:15complicated word I'm sorry which is a
  655. 34:19problem for many TV users today that the
  656. 34:22dialogues are not well understandable
  657. 34:24and you can have dedicated audio tracks
  658. 34:27for such users you can also think about
  659. 34:30clean audio feeds and to provide to the
  660. 34:33TV screen another variant of playing an
  661. 34:37IP audio and sync where the broadcast
  662. 34:39video is doing so on mobile devices so
  663. 34:42as you have seen we can couple mobile
  664. 34:45devices to TV sets and to HPB TV
  665. 34:49applications I'm running on these TV
  666. 34:51sets and this allows to provide
  667. 34:55additional audios for individual usage
  668. 34:58so this is the clue here that you can
  669. 35:01have for example the standard broadcast
  670. 35:03audio on the TV screen and you can
  671. 35:06provide an audio description only to the
  672. 35:08very person needing this he can consume
  673. 35:12it by a consumers via headphones then or
  674. 35:14can provide additional language versions
  675. 35:18people who need additional language
  676. 35:21versions and again they can consume this
  677. 35:23wire headphones and you can do this in
  678. 35:25parallel so you can have 10 different
  679. 35:29people with 10 smartphones sitting on
  680. 35:32the couch and each of them hearing its
  681. 35:35individual audio so this can be done
  682. 35:38multiple at multiple instances multiple
  683. 35:40times for the same TV set so finally so
  684. 35:45this is certainly nothing for the mass
  685. 35:47market in contrary to the other one so
  686. 35:49the other ones are really something
  687. 35:52mature for the end and very well suited
  688. 35:54for the mass market this is still not
  689. 35:56this is just to show the potential this
  690. 35:59is using an AR glass we have been using
  691. 36:02the microsoft hololens so you still see
  692. 36:04this somehow here so this photo has been
  693. 36:06taken through the microsoft hololens and
  694. 36:08you see the TV screen this is a real TV
  695. 36:12and here we have a virtual signer which
  696. 36:15can only be seen by the one wearing the
  697. 36:18AR class so also some accessibility
  698. 36:21feature for individual usage HPB TV 2
  699. 36:26can also be used for a different user
  700. 36:28journey than pushing something from the
  701. 36:30mobile to the TV screen this is vice
  702. 36:33versa pushing some pushing something
  703. 36:35from the TV screen onto a mobile so if
  704. 36:39you have this is our example here a
  705. 36:41cooking show then you can have an HP b
  706. 36:44TV overlay on HP b TB 2 devices for
  707. 36:47example you can check this in your
  708. 36:49application ci its HP B TV 2 then you
  709. 36:51make an overlay like this have you got
  710. 36:54appetite and did you like what you have
  711. 36:58been what you have seen here what has
  712. 37:01been cooked and then press ok and then
  713. 37:03you get the the recipe on your mobile
  714. 37:07phone and you can later on come back to
  715. 37:10it and we have implemented a specific
  716. 37:15application for this we call this
  717. 37:16Universal launcher and it allows you to
  718. 37:20both immediately react on such a post
  719. 37:25from the TV screen immediately react and
  720. 37:27interact with a TV screen so push videos
  721. 37:31back to the TV
  722. 37:32or interact somehow with the TV but also
  723. 37:34come back to this later on and just save
  724. 37:38the links on your mobile I think all of
  725. 37:42these showcases and maybe even more than
  726. 37:44what I mentioned can be seen and and
  727. 37:48read about in our IAT lab here you see a
  728. 37:51number of 0 else and there you will find
  729. 37:55in our lab more information about these
  730. 37:58use cases so this about HPB TV as a such
  731. 38:02so to give you some impression what HPB
  732. 38:04TV 2 really is so in the years from 2016
  733. 38:11onwards so since the publication of the
  734. 38:13very first version of HPV TV do HPB TV
  735. 38:17has worked on improving the core
  736. 38:20specification of HPB TV and this is
  737. 38:23still ongoing so the latest HPP TV
  738. 38:26standard version published currently is
  739. 38:29HPB TV 202 the version 1.5 and here i'm
  740. 38:35indicating a number of features which
  741. 38:37have been added since then so there are
  742. 38:40no really groundbreaking things like for
  743. 38:44HPB TV - but I'm giving you you hear a
  744. 38:47number of examples examples of the
  745. 38:51features which have been added since
  746. 38:54them and if you're interested you can
  747. 38:56just come back later to this I want to
  748. 39:01read the holy the technical stuff now
  749. 39:03because I want to before we are finished
  750. 39:06I want to make the overview complete as
  751. 39:09HPB TV as you have seen is not only
  752. 39:11working on its core specification by
  753. 39:14adding more features doing improvements
  754. 39:17with the core specification which is
  755. 39:19still HP b TV - so the next version by
  756. 39:22the way the next version we are planning
  757. 39:23is HP p TV 203 which is not yet
  758. 39:26published which is still on its way and
  759. 39:31but also 203 won't have any
  760. 39:34groundbreaking new so it's an and really
  761. 39:38a continuous evolution to keep the core
  762. 39:40specification up-to-date but beyond the
  763. 39:44core specification and the
  764. 39:46what you're seeing here is independent
  765. 39:48HPB TV specifications they are not
  766. 39:51independent because they are not
  767. 39:53directly depending on a specific HP b TV
  768. 39:562 version some of them can even be
  769. 40:00implemented on top of HP b TV one others
  770. 40:04are designed to be implemented on the
  771. 40:06top of HP b TV 2 and as you can see here
  772. 40:11the HP b TV association has produced up
  773. 40:14to now 5 of these specifications which
  774. 40:18are already available at Etsy those
  775. 40:22three are basically an update of the
  776. 40:26other is sorry I see I have to correct
  777. 40:29this there's a missed typing here
  778. 40:32so those three specifications
  779. 40:35application Discovery over broadband and
  780. 40:37HP b TV in IPTV networks are designed to
  781. 40:42allow the application of HP b TV in in
  782. 40:46use scenarios where HP b TV doesn't work
  783. 40:50today this is when broadcast doesn't
  784. 40:53carry application signaling the reasons
  785. 40:55why this happens in the market or there
  786. 40:58is an operator box in between the
  787. 41:00broadcast network and the HP b TV TV set
  788. 41:03or linear television is distributed via
  789. 41:06managed IPTV or ott so there are a
  790. 41:09number of market segments leaving the
  791. 41:13real free featured and traditional
  792. 41:16broadcast or be not fully supported in
  793. 41:19the broadcast and these specifications
  794. 41:24depicted here are designed to make HP b
  795. 41:28TV applicable also in these domains of
  796. 41:31the market and we have one or two I
  797. 41:35think even dedicated webinars planned on
  798. 41:39these topics so I won't go further in
  799. 41:42for now and give more details about the
  800. 41:45application Discovery over broadband or
  801. 41:47the IPTV networks because if you're
  802. 41:50interested you can come back to this in
  803. 41:54the context of later webinars
  804. 41:58the same is true for the operator apps
  805. 42:01also the operator apps is something very
  806. 42:04interested so it allows platform
  807. 42:06operators to replace etta boxes by
  808. 42:11specific apps working on retail TV sets
  809. 42:16so a very significant potential also for
  810. 42:21the market and to really bring benefit
  811. 42:25to TV manufacturers bring benefits to
  812. 42:29operators bring benefits to broadcasters
  813. 42:33and also bringing benefits to the
  814. 42:36end-user so this is really an offer for
  815. 42:40a very significant win win win win
  816. 42:42situation and this is also something
  817. 42:45very dedicated webinar is planned so I
  818. 42:49won't go further into the details as I
  819. 42:53won't do for the targeted advertising I
  820. 42:56have mentioned before that you can
  821. 42:58replace the broadcast by IP video today
  822. 43:02but there are some timing and
  823. 43:04performance issues around this and this
  824. 43:07is exactly what's addressed by the HPP
  825. 43:10TV targeted advertising specifications
  826. 43:12so it's a two-part specification in the
  827. 43:14first of which defines technical tools
  828. 43:17to allow an improved switching
  829. 43:20performance between the broadcast video
  830. 43:22and the previous so exactly filling the
  831. 43:26technical gap we have today and the
  832. 43:29second part of that specification
  833. 43:31defines the exact tolerances for the
  834. 43:35switching behavior so really it delivers
  835. 43:39the figures that the broadcast needs to
  836. 43:42evaluate exactly the tolerance schema he
  837. 43:46has available to guarantee a very
  838. 43:49pleasant visual flow on the TV set while
  839. 43:52switching from broadcast to broadband
  840. 43:55and also on this for this topic we have
  841. 43:57an webinar on our agenda finally my very
  842. 44:04last slide HPB TV so this is a quotation
  843. 44:08HPB TV is critical in modernizing
  844. 44:11cause business model I like this this is
  845. 44:15from the summary from Paul Gray from
  846. 44:17presentation from IHS market from our HP
  847. 44:21B TV symposium last year so we won't be
  848. 44:24able to do this in possum this year
  849. 44:26hopefully next year again and he was
  850. 44:29summing up his findings and and came to
  851. 44:34that conclusion which I very much agree
  852. 44:36on of course and I think and I hope you
  853. 44:40have seen in this webinar that HP btv
  854. 44:43really provides a very very rich set of
  855. 44:47tools around smart TVs around
  856. 44:51broadcasting around linear television
  857. 44:53allowing to modernize the broadcast
  858. 44:57business model and bring many new
  859. 44:59content ideas and also commercializing
  860. 45:03ideas into the whole business so and
  861. 45:07with this um quotation which I as I said
  862. 45:10very much agree with I would like to
  863. 45:12close now and I would like to thank you
  864. 45:14very much for your attention
  865. 45:25presentation and we have received a
  866. 45:29couple of interesting questions and that
  867. 45:31I'd like to share with you I don't know
  868. 45:33whether we'll have time for all of them
  869. 45:35but I'll quickly show them to you let me
  870. 45:38just share my screen and the organizer
  871. 45:49my screen please so that we can quickly
  872. 45:51go through the available questions I'll
  873. 46:05need to get the moderator status again
  874. 46:07and then you can share my screen there
  875. 46:10you go so as you can see the first
  876. 46:13webinar so we're still trying to somehow
  877. 46:16get used to the technology there are now
  878. 46:21the questions that you have submitted
  879. 46:26and I would like to have a look at the
  880. 46:30very first one because this refers to
  881. 46:33the different standards so close you can
  882. 46:39see that yourself there's a question
  883. 46:40regarding all the TV sets and the newer
  884. 46:43versions and how to reverse and how to
  885. 46:50how to make 2.0 TV sets use the new
  886. 46:56features yes
  887. 46:58so I think in there are two questions
  888. 47:00behind this so one is really how to
  889. 47:03manage to say have a migration between
  890. 47:061.5 sorry one and and and two and you
  891. 47:10can have a common code base so you have
  892. 47:13different variants as a broadcaster how
  893. 47:15you can do it so you can have an auto
  894. 47:18start application which detects whether
  895. 47:20it's an HP b TV 1 or 2 device and then
  896. 47:24either offers new applications for the
  897. 47:28new devices and offers the old version
  898. 47:32folio the devices but if you are asking
  899. 47:35for the single codebase then yes you can
  900. 47:38also offer applications in a way that
  901. 47:41you are that all the basic code of your
  902. 47:44say I'm ketchup TV service is HP BT v1
  903. 47:49compatible but if you have specific
  904. 47:51features for example you can push
  905. 47:53something you can you can play you have
  906. 47:56a catch-up TV which service which is HP
  907. 47:59B TV 1.0 then you could for example
  908. 48:02offer the 2.0 feature of playing an
  909. 48:06additional audio in the catch-up TV
  910. 48:09section additional audio on a mobile
  911. 48:12phone so something which is definitely
  912. 48:14HPV TV - just by asking the device
  913. 48:19version and then offering or launching
  914. 48:21the specific features and the specific
  915. 48:24coach code only on the 2.0 device set
  916. 48:29maybe the bigger problem is really to
  917. 48:32manage devices in terms of processing
  918. 48:35power and memory consumptions so and
  919. 48:38this is really maybe the more relevant
  920. 48:41message that even if you so you can so
  921. 48:44the I would say the dealing with HP b TV
  922. 48:472.0 is the the easier part and and the
  923. 48:50more fundamental and more complex part
  924. 48:53is really to keep your code clean and
  925. 48:56slim enough even if it's only 1.0 and
  926. 49:00that it will run on all the devices so
  927. 49:04there is an unfortunate trend in
  928. 49:06application development even if it's
  929. 49:08only for 1.0 or 1.5 to use frameworks
  930. 49:13producing lots of code or consuming lots
  931. 49:18of memory or using features which are
  932. 49:20not part of HP BTD 1 so this can be the
  933. 49:24bigger problem in managing the old
  934. 49:26devices is taking into account their
  935. 49:28limited memory so not the HP b TV web
  936. 49:31version itself but the limited
  937. 49:33processing power and memory thank you
  938. 49:42the second question refers to big
  939. 49:45amounts of HPV TV data content to be
  940. 49:48transformed transferred using the
  941. 49:50broadcast channel office
  942. 49:51but that's to non internet-connected
  943. 49:54users so obviously question surrounds
  944. 49:57the capability of the broadcast stream
  945. 50:01to deliver large volumes of data yes so
  946. 50:05there is two answers you can use the
  947. 50:07dsmcc data carousel for some basic
  948. 50:10applications like and teletext or maybe
  949. 50:12an EPG application but if you are asking
  950. 50:16for big data you probably think about
  951. 50:17video and there we have the push VOD
  952. 50:22option so there's a dedicated protocol
  953. 50:25file delivery protocol for delivering
  954. 50:27big video content to local storage on
  955. 50:32HPB TV terminals but this is nothing I
  956. 50:36think has ever really been implemented
  957. 50:39and deployed so from the standardization
  958. 50:41side HPB TV can do great things and and
  959. 50:46and great interesting VOD stores even
  960. 50:49without any internet connectivity but in
  961. 50:52terms of actual deployment or actual
  962. 50:54usage this is very low or even zero now
  963. 51:07it's there and it won't be changed it
  964. 51:10continues to be developed adopted to the
  965. 51:11needs of broadcasts manufacturers and
  966. 51:13operators that's why there are
  967. 51:15constantly new versions released and to
  968. 51:17make sure that they're always suiting
  969. 51:19the needs of the market I mean the
  970. 51:21engineers can only develop things and
  971. 51:23then see what happens so it's an ongoing
  972. 51:25process I think and you would agree to
  973. 51:27that now the AIT media take the ketchup
  974. 51:34servers from German public broadcaster
  975. 51:36ard is now addressed in the third
  976. 51:39question when you use the mobile to
  977. 51:43interact with the broadcast signal do
  978. 51:45you have to be tuned to a DS broadcast
  979. 51:47channel or can you watch something else
  980. 51:49no so you can watch something else you
  981. 51:52can be say on the CTF or even RTL
  982. 51:54channel and then the application is
  983. 51:57launched then you lose any earlier
  984. 52:01broadcast picture so you can't launch
  985. 52:02anything on top of
  986. 52:05say RTL broadcast video so you are
  987. 52:07completely disconnected from broadcast
  988. 52:10if you're doing that launch and then
  989. 52:12after terminating the HP B TV
  990. 52:14application then the latest broadcast
  991. 52:18will be back okay
  992. 52:21now two questions for home shopping
  993. 52:23usage in the house the payment made in
  994. 52:27home shopping abuse of HP TV can the
  995. 52:30user insert the credit entrance and then
  996. 52:33the credit card data is directly sent to
  997. 52:37the HP B TV app or how is that performed
  998. 52:40the payment is the payment not directly
  999. 52:46for the example I have showed you so
1000. 52:48this is just entering your customer ID
1001. 52:51and then they just rely on the customer
1002. 52:54ID being correct in this case but we
1003. 52:57have seen cases where there was an
1004. 53:01integration with PayPal for example you
1005. 53:05of course you can also ask the user to
1006. 53:08enter his credit card data so this is
1007. 53:11really how you do it so this is nothing
1008. 53:14so HP b TV does not has not foreseen any
1009. 53:17explicit payment component or so so HP b
1010. 53:23TV just provides a basic the basic web
1011. 53:25tool box in in this respect and then you
1012. 53:28can ask people to to enter codes or you
1013. 53:34can do some verification with another
1014. 53:36device and and so on so you can think of
1015. 53:38various methods how payment actually is
1016. 53:41is done so there is no specific method
  1017. 53:43for HP b TV and as i indicated you can't
1018. 53:46do an PayPal integration or or ask for
1019. 53:49credit card numbers whatever this is
1020. 53:52open to the creativity everyone can use
  1021. 54:05it really it's not tied to a
  1022. 54:07manufacturer it's cross-device that's
1023. 54:09one of the benefits and if you want to
1024. 54:11add on certain absent and
1025. 54:15you're free to do so obviously and the
  1026. 54:18Association in itself is a nonprofit
  1027. 54:20organization and it's one of the
1028. 54:23foundations of these open specifications
1029. 54:26now the next question is reflecting the
1030. 54:32earlier question regarding home cropping
  1031. 54:34whether there's a solution for a payment
  1032. 54:36I think we've already given feedback
  1033. 54:38that there's no specific solution for
1034. 54:41that available but of course developers
1035. 54:44up for each to create one yes the same
1036. 54:49as as I said before so first yes so it
1037. 54:54is possible to to include the smartphone
1038. 54:57in this transaction so as you have seen
1039. 54:59before you can't push something so you
1040. 55:01can directly push the offering you can
  1041. 55:04directly launch a corresponding shopping
1042. 55:08app on your smart phone and via deep
1043. 55:10linking directly link to the related
1044. 55:13product so this is a very obvious way
1045. 55:15you you can do it
1046. 55:16so HBB TV certainly provides all the
1047. 55:19tools which are necessary to do this but
1048. 55:22it doesn't provide an explicit paid TV
1049. 55:25solution but it easily I think in this
1050. 55:28case it easily HPB TV easily allows to
1051. 55:31integrate such a make use of any
1052. 55:33existing solution in the market now the
1053. 55:46last question refers to SCT 35 messaging
1054. 55:50does HPB TV make use of this
  1055. 55:53yes it's foreseen to include SCT 35 into
  1056. 55:58the overall targeted advertising
1057. 56:00framework so it's not planned to to do
1058. 56:04it directly on the HPP TV client but it
1059. 56:06it it can be a player all the standards
1060. 56:10only on the contribution and site so in
1061. 56:14the in the BTB interfaces SCT 35 is one
1062. 56:19of the relevant interfaces to to do the
  1063. 56:23signaling
1064. 56:25very good so it's part of the overall
1065. 56:26it's part of the overall concept yes
1066. 56:29it's part of the overall concept good
1067. 56:32question to round up this presentation
1068. 56:34thank you very much for taking the time
1069. 56:37Klaus to present to the basics and
1070. 56:39reference examples of HP btv
1071. 56:41applications in this very first webinar
1072. 56:46thank you also for your great interest
1073. 56:49we've had lots of participants lots of
1074. 56:52feedback in the Q&A session from this
1075. 56:57slide the next webinar is already
1076. 56:59scheduled it will take place on July
  1077. 57:0114th between 1400 and 1500 Central
1078. 57:05European summer time it will focus on
  1079. 57:08the HP btp op-amp which we've mentioned
1080. 57:10already some might remember this is all
1081. 57:13about how to turn your TV set into a
1082. 57:15virtual set of books amongst other great
1083. 57:18things and this will be a best practice
1084. 57:20report by senior executives of HD plus
1085. 57:24the German ETH TV platform who have been
1086. 57:27the first commercial users of the HP on
1087. 57:32their experiences further webinars as
1088. 57:36you can see this one planned for the
1089. 57:38middle of each month we'll focus on HP
1090. 57:42btv testing and certification in
1091. 57:44September in October application is
1092. 57:47covering over broadband presentation mid
1093. 57:52November will be again the HPP
1094. 57:54TV o bed but this time focusing on
1095. 57:57specification updates that will be
1096. 57:59released around that time with December
1097. 58:02to be announced and then next year the
  1098. 58:06dates aren't scheduled yet but we
1099. 58:09certainly know some of the topics one
1100. 58:12will be a best practice report by
1101. 58:14operators possibly again focusing on the
1102. 58:16HP b TV app but from a different country
1103. 58:19and by different operators then there
1104. 58:21will be the targeted advertising
  1105. 58:23specification for addressable TV
1106. 58:25referred about that in the presentation
1107. 58:27very interesting to hear about the first
  1108. 58:29commercial
1109. 58:32and then Klaus Merkel has kindly offered
1110. 58:34us to do another webinar this time on
1111. 58:37HPB TV beyond traditional broadcast TV
1112. 58:40but we've seen in the presentation was
1113. 58:42very much focused on the traditional
1114. 58:44classic TV world but we've seen other
1115. 58:47little things that have popped up for
1116. 58:48example gaming and there was lots more
1117. 58:51solutions lots more things you can do
  1118. 58:53with HPB TV that aren't directly
1119. 58:55connected to a broadcast TV stream and
1120. 58:58this will be towards the end of the
1121. 59:00current series but this is not all you
1122. 59:03are all invited to submit your ideas and
1123. 59:06your thoughts about possible webinar
1124. 59:09topics if you like to be a co-host if
1125. 59:11you like to submit ideas and thought
1126. 59:13things you want to know more about
1127. 59:14please do so by sending us an email to
  1128. 59:18webinar at HPB tv.org webinar HPB tv.org
1129. 59:23this is the email address you're also
1130. 59:25received in the confirmation find email
1131. 59:27after registering for this webinar
1132. 59:30thanks again everyone for joining us
1133. 59:33today for this opening session I think
1134. 59:36it's been a great presentation and it
1135. 59:39shows you what a freebie TV is all about
1136. 59:41it also shows you the kind of webinar
