Full transcript
- 0:00Did you know many guests leave [music] a
- 0:01British state banquet with an empty
- 0:03stomach? A state banquet at Buckingham
- 0:05Palace is one of the most elaborate
- 0:06[music] dinners in the world with a menu
- 0:08that is served to around 170 guests. The
- 0:11[music] reason they often leave still
- 0:12hungry is because the monarch sets the
- 0:14pace for the entire room. Nobody sits
- 0:16before the monarch sits. And when the
- 0:18[music] monarch finally finishes eating,
- 0:20every guest is expected to stop eating.
- 0:22Queen Elizabeth [music] was famously a
- 0:23fast eater, which meant guests at her
- 0:25table had to race through each course
- 0:27before her plate was empty. knowing that
- 0:29once it was, [music] theirs would
- 0:30disappear, too. A former palace steward
- 0:33described standing behind her chair and
- 0:35pressing a button [music] the moment she
- 0:36put down her cutlery, which lit a signal
- 0:39for the footmen who walked in and began
- 0:40[music] clearing. Even so, guests are
- 0:42seated in strict order of rank, and
- 0:44talking with the monarch often matters
- 0:46more than eating. But the [music]
- 0:48tradition remains and at the grandest
- 0:49dinner table in Britain, everyone eats
- 0:51to the rhythm of one person's appetite.
