Have You Been Following the Plan? — Transcript

- 0:00Charlie Munger in one of his seminal
- 0:02speeches, he talks about how to
- 0:03guarantee failure.
- 0:05How to make sure that you are a failure.
- 0:07And he inverts the the concept of
- 0:09success. It's like, what could you do to
- 0:10make sure that you were a failure? It's
- 0:12like, well, you would definitely get
- 0:13involved in drugs, drinking. He says,
- 0:16was it leverage, liquor, and women?
- 0:17That's the you know, the Charlie's
- 0:18Charlie's big one, right?
- 0:20>> [laughter]
- 0:20>> But one of the ones that he has, I think
- 0:21he has seven in his in his in his
- 0:23speech, is
- 0:26consistency.
- 0:27He's like, you have to make sure that
- 0:28you're inconsistent. He's like, because
- 0:31if you are consistent and you have none
- 0:33of the other attributes, he's like, it's
- 0:35you still might be successful. He's
- 0:37like, it's it's very tough for people
- 0:39who are consistent to not be successful.
- 0:41And he makes an especially pointed point
- 0:44about consistency, because in my
- 0:45opinion, it's one of the most difficult
- 0:47of the virtues for humans to do, because
- 0:49we're so attracted to novelty. And so,
- 0:51like
- 0:52I mean, I used to do with this with, you
- 0:54know, people on their diets all the
- 0:55time. I remember I ran gyms. And so,
- 0:57someone would come in and I would always
- 0:58ask the question, so have you been
- 0:59following the meal plan? And then they
- 1:01would say, yes. And so, then I started
- 1:02changing the way I asked the question.
- 1:04So, I'd say, out of the 21 meals that
- 1:06you were supposed to eat, how many of
- 1:07the 21 did you have exactly the way it
- 1:09was on the meal plan? And then they
- 1:11would be like, oh, I mean, at least
- 1:12half.
- 1:13And they would say it as though that was
- 1:14a mark of success.
- 1:16And right now, the meal plan could be
- 1:18your content plan. It could be your It
- 1:21could be your showing up to work on time
- 1:22plan. It could be the time that you want
- 1:23to put towards your side hustle. It
- 1:24doesn't really matter.
- 1:25But
- 1:27if there's one muscle that you can flex,
- 1:29it's learning to do the same thing over
- 1:31and over again. Like one of the one of
- 1:32the values that we had at Gym Launch is
- 1:34do the boring work. Because boring is
- 1:36what makes you rich, right? It's It's
- 1:38It's It's writing the follow-up sequence
- 1:41to your to the purchase page that you
- 1:43don't feel like doing,
- 1:44but you know you should do. It's running
- 1:46the split test for the 10th time. It's
- 1:49It's actually going through and prepping
- 1:51for 20 minutes before you have the
- 1:52meeting. Because
- 1:55it's amazing how much smarter you can
- 1:57appear with 20 minutes of preparation.
- 1:59Like you can appear 50 IQ points smarter
- 2:01if you just prepare for meetings for 20
- 2:03minutes. I remember I did a consulting
- 2:04day which I've only done three in my
- 2:06entire life.
- 2:07And
- 2:08when I showed up to the day cuz I always
- 2:11want to make sure that everyone always
- 2:12gets more for me than I than they give
- 2:13me.
- 2:14Um I had taken
- 2:16I don't know, 4 hours. Not a long time,
- 2:18but a long time for I think some people,
- 2:20but for me 4 hours is nothing. I count
- 2:22in hundreds, so this was irrelevant.
- 2:24And so I put like 4 hours and actually
- 2:26took the time and put it in to do
- 2:27research on the individual. So I looked
- 2:29at every single page they had, every
- 2:30landing page, every offer, every
- 2:32everything. And I had seven pages of
- 2:34things that I thought would make them
- 2:35more money.
- 2:37And so when I started I was like, this
- 2:38is what we're going to go through today
- 2:39and I'll walk you through line by line
- 2:40and you'll have this as a take line so
- 2:41you can execute it with your team. It
- 2:42was a bigger company.
- 2:44And the guy was shocked. He was like,
- 2:47never in my entire life has anyone had
- 2:49this much preparation. And that's when
- 2:52it goes back to like you need 20
- 2:54podcasts to be in the top 1%.
- 2:56The
- 2:57the bar for excellence, like I have this
- 3:00timer that I have on my desk which it's
- 3:02it's the easiest purchase you can make.
- 3:04I think it was like seven bucks on
- 3:05Amazon. It's a little twist kitchen
- 3:06timer. It's very easy.
- 3:08And it's been probably my biggest focus
- 3:10hack, you know, to date which is
- 3:12I turn it when I want to start working.
- 3:13And part of it allows me to think how
- 3:15long I get better at predicting how long
- 3:16it's going to take me to do something.
- 3:18So I think I think this will take me 35
- 3:19minutes. So I turn the clock to 35 and I
- 3:21click on. And then I start working on
- 3:23the thing. And the moment my phone rings
- 3:24or I look at Slack or whatever, I stop
- 3:26the timer. And so you actually see that
- 3:28your time on task is usually
- 3:30significantly less than you think it is.
- 3:31And I think that
- 3:33in my early days I would spend a very
- 3:35long time in front of a computer telling
- 3:38myself that I was working with very few
- 3:40minutes actually on task. And that's why
- 3:42I think that most things are actually
- 3:44significantly easier than people think
- 3:45they are. They just don't know how to
- 3:47try hard.
- 3:48Because the harder that you try, the
- 3:50easier it gets.
- 3:51And so it's like if you can just learn
- 3:53to love what trying hard feels like,
- 3:56then all of a sudden it becomes
- 3:57unreasonable that you can't win. So,
- 3:59like
- 4:00for the presentation that I'm giving, I
- 4:01explained a little bit earlier about
- 4:02what my process looks like. If you were
- 4:04to say, "What would it take for somebody
- 4:06to be unreasonably good that it would be
- 4:07impossible for them to not be a top 1%
- 4:09salesman or a top 1% content creator?"
- 4:12And you said, "What would that person
- 4:13need to do?" Irrelevant from outcome.
- 4:15What would be the actions or evidence
- 4:16that they would have to do prior to that
- 4:18thing that would make it unreasonable
- 4:19that they couldn't succeed?
- 4:21And then you do those things, what
- 4:22happens is you realize that it's
- 4:24actually not that hard because you put
- 4:25so much work into it and the bar from
- 4:27other people working is so
- 4:28embarrassingly low
- 4:31that they then ask you how you did it
- 4:32and it must be easy.
- 4:35>> Consistency
- 4:37doesn't guarantee that you'll be
- 4:39successful,
- 4:41but not being consistent will guarantee
- 4:43that you won't reach success.
- 4:45You have a productivity hack, an easy
- 4:47productivity hack. Instead of spending
- 4:49time getting in the mood to work, just
- 4:52start working. Confront the work. People
- 4:54think they need perfect conditions to
- 4:56start, when in reality, starting is the
- 4:59perfect condition.
- 5:02>> I'm married to that.
- 5:04I love that.
- 5:06Because
- 5:07if you think like I you know, I
- 5:09obviously am somebody who always wants
- 5:10to optimize how much work I do per unit
- 5:12of time. And so, I I was you know, there
- 5:15was definitely times earlier in my life
- 5:16I was really romanticized by these like
- 5:18very extensive morning routines and
- 5:20supplement rituals and like all this
- 5:21stuff of mental masturbation around the
- 5:23work that needed to be done. But when I
- 5:25looked at 2 hours later and nothing had
- 5:26actually gotten done,
- 5:29the moment you begin working
- 5:31is when your output per unit of time
- 5:33goes up.
- 5:34And so, that makes beginning the single
- 5:38greatest hack that you can have for
- 5:40everything else that you do in work
- 5:42because thing is when you start working,
- 5:43you start getting in the mood to work.
- 5:45Right? Like everything else is
- 5:46procrastinating around the work that you
- 5:47think you should do. But like I have
- 5:49noticed for me at least, I have these I
- 5:51have some big mental tasks. You know
- 5:52what I mean? Like big content piece or
- 5:54big thing that you need to like you know
- 5:55it's going to take real mental effort.
- 5:57It takes me like five minutes of
- 5:58actually being in it to then get a
- 6:01little bit of a lay of the land to then
- 6:03get into it. But I used to take hours to
- 6:06delay to start the first five minutes.
- 6:08And so my time compression of when I
- 6:09thought I should start doing something
- 6:11and when I started doing it over time
- 6:12it's just compressed to the point where
- 6:13it's like the moment I think that I need
- 6:15to start doing it. Sometimes I just
- 6:17start it because then what happens I get
- 6:18this open loop. And so rather than
- 6:20complete work at like cuz a lot of
- 6:21people are like I want to complete it
- 6:23this really nice clean point. Stop
- 6:25halfway through the sentence cuz it'll
- 6:26drive you mad. Real quick, if you're a
- 6:27business owner and you are not growing
- 6:29as fast as you'd like, I'd like to give
- 6:31you a free gift. So my team and I put
- 6:33together the $100 scaling road map,
- 6:36which is basically 200 hours of us
- 6:37looking over all the portfolio companies
- 6:38we've had and what stages of growth they
- 6:41went through and more importantly where
- 6:43they got stuck and how they got past it.
- 6:45And so we broke it in these 10 stages
- 6:47and we made this little kind of quiz
- 6:48thing where if you put in your business
- 6:49information it'll tell you where you're
- 6:51at and the most important part for you,
- 6:53what to do for each of functions of the
- 6:54business across product, marketing,
- 6:55sales, customer success, recruiting, IT,
- 6:58human resources and finance. And so no
- 7:00matter what you're struggling with,
- 7:01someone else has already struggled with
- 7:03it and solved it. And so I'd like to
- 7:05give you this thing absolutely free. You
- 7:06go to acquisition.com/roadmap,
- 7:08plug in your business information and if
- 7:10you want us to actually help you
- 7:12deconstruct the business and you're
- 7:13trying to scale, we'd love to help you
- 7:15out. On the thank you page you can just
- 7:16book a call with my team and we will
- 7:19look into business, see if we can help
- 7:21and if we can we'll invite you out to
- 7:22Vegas and we'll do this in person live.
