Harrow School — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:06My son Hugh is 14 now.
- 0:09He's enjoying playing sport, sings in
- 0:11the choir, and he's doing really well
- 0:13with his work.
- 0:14What's clear [music] is that he's really
- 0:16thriving with life at Harrow.
- 0:20>> At Harrow, the boarding house is like a
- 0:22family unit. The house is where each boy
- 0:24starts [music] and ends his day, and so
- 0:26it has to feel like a home.
- 0:30>> Watching a boy through school through 5
- 0:32years is very rewarding. The older boys
- 0:34play a huge part in looking after the
- 0:37younger boys. We aim to make the
- 0:38boarding school environment here a
- 0:40positive thing. [music] It's never going
- 0:41to be home, but it's like a home from
- 0:43home.
- 0:45>> With a school as old as Harrow, there is
- 0:48heritage and tradition, of course. Our
- 0:51charter from Queen Elizabeth I
- 0:54to our founder in 1572,
- 0:56the fourth form room where boys have
- 0:58gathered every year since 1650, and our
- 1:02speech room modeled in part on
- 1:04Shakespeare's Globe, where we sing from
- 1:07our own songbook.
- 1:09>> [music]
- 1:14>> But there is also innovation and
- 1:16facilities fit for the 21st century.
- 1:19>> The school has moved to a fully
- 1:21digitized program of learning. All
- 1:23resources are available to the boys at
- 1:25all times and in an instant.
- 1:28>> We really do benefit from having all our
- 1:30resources in one place, on our personal
- 1:32laptops. I particularly enjoyed lessons
- 1:35in the teaching and learning hub, where
- 1:37our beaks experimented new ways of
- 1:39teaching us.
- 1:40>> While we look to engage the boys with
- 1:42the latest approaches to learning,
- 1:43they're also encouraged to put [music]
- 1:44pen to paper and to read physical books.
- 1:47The best of both worlds. We constantly
- 1:49strive to stretch the boys' horizons,
- 1:52and our new science facilities are
- 1:53world-class. A state-of-the-art building
- 1:56that's an inspirational learning
- 1:57environment for biology and chemistry.
- 1:59>> Our boys continue to win places at
- 2:01excellent institutions and we maintain
- 2:03our fantastic record for acceptances
- 2:05[music] at Oxbridge and Ivy League
- 2:07universities.
- 2:08>> With 324 acres of land comprising
- 2:10woodland, parkland, a lake, a nine-hole
- 2:13golf course and even a working farm,
- 2:15there's lots to keep the boys stimulated
- 2:17outside the classroom.
- 2:19>> There are so many activities to take
- 2:20part in. It's hard [music] to know where
- 2:21to start.
- 2:22>> Rugby, football and cricket, of course.
- 2:25>> Swimming, soccer, music.
- 2:27>> Sailing, climbing, debating, clay pigeon
- 2:29shooting, rifle shooting, community
- 2:31service, art, water polo, core, rackets,
- 2:35fives, golf, squash, weightlifting. Not
- 2:39my thing, exactly.
- 2:40>> Drama, lots of drama, singing,
- 2:43basketball, gymnastics.
- 2:44>> Oh, and Harrow football, our own
- 2:46football game. It's hard to explain, but
- 2:49fun, a lot of fun.
- 2:51>> Competing in sports teams gives you
- 2:53great opportunities to prove your
- 2:55leadership skills. At Harrow, leadership
- 2:57is actually considered a service. To
- 3:00serve well is to lead well.
- 3:02>> Everything we do at Harrow is rooted in
- 3:05our key values, courage, honor, humility
- 3:09and fellowship.
- 3:10>> I was really very honored to have
- 3:12received the Values Medal for my year
- 3:13group. It meant a great deal to me to be
- 3:15recognized by the school community.
- 3:17>> Of course, we have our eyes firmly fixed
- 3:21on what lies over the horizon for all
- 3:24our boys,
- 3:25places at [music] universities and skill
- 3:27sets and mindsets that will ready them
- 3:29for the wider world. But while they
- 3:32remain on the hill, our focus is to
- 3:34create a safe but challenging
- 3:36environment, one in which they can
- 3:38sharpen their intellect, explore varied
- 3:42interests and develop their values to
- 3:44become fully rounded individuals.
- 3:50>> The school is supporting our son in many
- 3:51[music] ways with excellent teaching,
- 3:54fantastic facilities, and endless
- 3:56opportunities.
- 3:58But above all, he's happy in himself.
