- 0:01Okay, Pedro, let's tell this one. May
- 0:0426, 2013, 20 miles off the southern
- 0:07coast of Nigeria.
- 0:10A violent storm strikes the Atlantic,
- 0:12flipping a tugboat upside down and
- 0:15sending it to the ocean floor, 30 m
- 0:19under the surface. And inside that boat
- 0:22was 29-year-old Harrison O'ini. He was
- 0:25just a cook wearing nothing but his
- 0:27boxers sitting on a toilet actually when
- 0:30the disaster struck.
- 0:33By the time the boat hit the seabed,
- 0:35Harrison was alone in the dark, trapped
- 0:38underwater with no way out and no one to
- 0:41come save him.
- 0:43This is the true story of how Harrison
- 0:46survived three days in a tiny air pocket
- 0:50at the bottom of the sea. A story of
- 0:53faith, fear, and the will to live.

- 1:30because today's story is one of the most
- 1:33intense survival tales you will ever
- 1:36hear.
- 1:38It started as a normal morning. Carrison
- 1:41woke up, says his daily prayers, and
- 1:44then turned on the hot plates for
- 1:45breakfast and then headed to the
- 1:47bathroom. And then that's when the wave
- 1:50hit. The Jason Ford tugboat flipped
- 1:54upside down. The bathroom door jammed
- 1:56and water rushed in. The toilet struck
- 2:00Harrison on the head as he scrambled in
- 2:02the dark. He felt blood in his face
- 2:05before everything went black.
- 2:08Within 2 minutes, the entire boat hit
- 2:11the seabed
- 2:1230 m down.
- 2:17When Harrison finally forced his way
- 2:19out, he saw two or three of his
- 2:20colleagues struggling to open the
- 2:22watertight exit hatch. But as the water
- 2:25rose, panic spread.
- 2:28Harrison made a choice which saved his
- 2:31life. He swam deeper into the vessel
- 2:34away from the exit. The force of the
- 2:37water swept him into the second
- 2:39engineer's bathroom. And that's where a
- 2:42miracle happened. Because the crew
- 2:44always kept the cabin door shut to guard
- 2:47against pirates, some of the air was
- 2:49trapped. Harrison found himself in a
- 2:52small air pocket. He clung to the base
- 2:55of a wash basin upside down in the
- 2:58freezing black water.
- 3:01And unfortunately, from the darkness, he
- 3:03heard the screaming, the shouts, the
- 3:06cries for help. And then one by one,
- 3:09they were silent.
- 3:11He realized he might be the only one who
- 3:14was left alive.
- 3:16Instead of panicking, Harrison focused
- 3:18on surviving.
- 3:21He broke the bathroom vent, used a piece
- 3:23of metal to pry open the door, and swam
- 3:26into the second engineer's cabin, where
- 3:28he found two life jackets and torches.
- 3:32He kept one torch in his mouth and
- 3:34another in his boxers and remade
- 3:36repeated dives throughout the flooded
- 3:38corridors trying to reach the watertight
- 3:41hatch. But there was no air pocket
- 3:44outside. He almost got lost. He almost
- 3:48drowned.
- 3:49So he changed his strategy.
- 3:53He tore up clothes he found into strips,
- 3:57made them into a rope, and tied it to
- 3:59the cabin door. That rope became his
- 4:02lifeline. Then he ripped the wood wood
- 4:05panels from the ceiling and tied them
- 4:07together, creating a makeshift raft so
- 4:10he could sit above the rising water in
- 4:12his tiny little air pocket.
- 4:15For nearly three days, Harrison waited
- 4:19in complete darkness. He ate a t of
- 4:23sardines, drank a single can of coke,
- 4:26and prayed, singing church hymns to keep
- 4:29his mind from breaking.
- 4:31But the ocean wasn't done with him.
- 4:34Crayfish and tiny sea creatures began to
- 4:36nibble at his legs and arms. The salt
- 4:39water peeled his tongue and made his
- 4:42throat burn.
- 4:44The water kept rising and he could hear
- 4:47the ships passing far above him. And
- 4:50then a sound, a metallic noise close. A
- 4:56diver had arrived to mark the wreck for
- 4:58other ships. Harrison banged on the
- 5:01steel walls with all of his strength. At
- 5:04first, there's no response. Then a light
- 5:08in the darkness. The divers's camera
- 5:11recorded the moment. At first, they just
- 5:13found they thought they found a body.
- 5:16But then Harrison's hand reached out and
- 5:19grabbed the divers. After 62 hours
- 5:23underwater, Harrison was alive. The dive
- 5:26team rushed him to a diving bell and
- 5:29then a decompression chamber where he
- 5:31spent the next 3 days to prevent his
- 5:33body from going into shock. When they
- 5:36finally told him how long he had been
- 5:38underwater, he couldn't believe it. He
- 5:41just thought maybe he had passed a
- 5:42night, not 3 days.
- 5:46But when he returned home, the PTSD and
- 5:49nightmares began. He dreamt of drowning,
- 5:52carrying his wife to safety, and of
- 5:54flooding and in his bed.
- 5:57But Harrison refused to let that fear
- 6:00win.
- 6:02A year later, his car crashed off a
- 6:05bridge and then went into a river and he
- 6:07escaped, but then went back underwater
- 6:10and tied a rope to his car so that his
- 6:12car could be recovered.
- 6:14That was his turning point. He decided
- 6:17he would never let the fear of water win
- 6:20over him again. He trained as a
- 6:23professional diver. By 2015, despite his
- 6:27personal struggles and depression and
- 6:29separation from his wife, he completed
- 6:32his diving certification.
- 6:34Today, years after Jun 4 sank, Harrison
- 6:38O'ini is 39 years old, a father of
- 6:41three, and works as a diver on oil and
- 6:44gas f facilities. Sometimes going as
- 6:48deep as 50 m underwater.
- 6:51He said that this experience changed him
- 6:53forever, made him value life, faith, and
- 6:58purpose.
- 7:00When humans are close to death, he said,
- 7:02that is when we understand that we are
- 7:05all one.
- 7:07Harrison Noini's story isn't just about
- 7:09survival. It's about courage, faith, and
- 7:14finding the strength when everything
- 7:16else seems lost.
- 7:18Would you have kept calm in the darkness
- 7:20for 3 days, or would you have let the
- 7:23fear take over? Let me know in the
- 7:25comments. I do read every single one.
