- 0:00In the depths of the Atlantic Ocean,
- 0:02where light cannot reach and hope seems
- 0:04impossible, one man defied death in a
- 0:07way few ever have. This is the true
- 0:10story of Harrison Okenny, a Nigerian
- 0:13cook, a survivor, and a symbol of
- 0:16unimaginable resilience. But before we
- 0:18explore today's story, this is Man
- 0:21Friday Fire Pit. If you like this

- 0:26have a story that needs to be heard
- 0:28here, maybe drop us a comment down
- 0:30below.
- 0:32On May the 26th, 2013, Aen was working
- 0:36aboard the Jascon 4, a tugboat,
- 0:40assisting an oil tanker off the coast of
- 0:42Nigeria. That morning, he woke early,
- 0:45said his prayers, and went to the
- 0:46bathroom. Moments later, a rogue wave
- 0:49struck the vessel, flipping it upside
- 0:52down and sending it 100 ft to the ocean
- 0:55floor. 11 crew members perished. Okenna,
- 1:00wearing only his boxer shorts, was
- 1:02trapped in total darkness, freezing
- 1:05water rising around him. He managed to
- 1:08find an air pocket in the engineer's
- 1:10bathroom, a tiny space that became his
- 1:13sanctuary for 60 hours. He clung on to
- 1:16life, stacking [music] mattresses to
- 1:19stay above the water, listening to the
- 1:21sounds of fish and crawfish, feeding on
- 1:24the bodies of his crew [music] mates. He
- 1:26had no food, no light, and no way to
- 1:29communicate. He recited Psalm 54, prayed
- 1:34constantly, and fought off panic,
- 1:36knowing that fear would consume his
- 1:38oxygen faster than anything else. Rescue
- 1:42divers arrived days later, expecting
- 1:45only to recover bodies. One diver was
- 1:47stunned when a hand reached out from the
- 1:50wreckage. Okenna was alive. The team
- 1:54quickly initiated a delicate rescue
- 1:57using a compression chamber to prevent
- 1:59nitrogen bubbles from forming in his
- 2:02bloodstream. Against all the odds,
- 2:04Okenna survived, but the trauma
- 2:06lingered. He suffered nightmares waking
- 2:09[music] up screaming that the bed was
- 2:11sinking. Yet instead of retreating from
- 2:13the sea, he faced it. Okenna trained as
- 2:16a commercial diver, eventually earning
- 2:18his IMCA class 2 certification.
- 2:22Today, he works to improve safety at sea
- 2:25and shares his story to inspire others.
- 2:28Harrison Okenna is a man who who stared
- 2:31into the abyss and found the strength to
- 2:34rise. His story reminds us that survival
- 2:36is not just about breath. It's about
- 2:39your personal belief, [music]
- 2:41courage, and the will to hold on when
- 2:43everything else seems lost.
