- 0:00Hello everyone and welcome to the Culips
- 0:02English Podcast. My name's Andrew and if
- 0:04you're new here, Culips is a podcast for
- 0:07people who are learning English. This is
- 0:09our Simplified Speech Series and in this
- 0:12series, my co-hosts and I have real
- 0:14conversations in clear, natural English
- 0:17that's just a little easier to follow.
- 0:20And if we say an expression or a word or
- 0:24some culture comes up that might be new
- 0:26to you, then we stop and explain it so
- 0:30that you can improve your English
- 0:31fluency. Now, this is episode number 255
- 0:35and we're talking about Halloween today.
- 0:38Halloween is just around the corner and
- 0:41that's what Indiana, my co-host and I
- 0:43are going to discuss in this episode.
- 0:46We'll get started with our conversation
- 0:48in a second, but before we do, I want to
- 0:50say something because I live here in
- 0:53South Korea and for many Korean people
- 0:56and for me as well, Halloween is a hard
- 0:59time of the year because of the terrible
- 1:02tragedy that happened a few years back,
- 1:05the Itaewon crowd crush accident in
- 1:092022.
- 1:10So, on that night, a lot of young people
- 1:13lost their lives and actually, to be
- 1:16honest, I haven't really celebrated
- 1:18Halloween since that time. So, my
- 1:21thoughts are really with everyone who
- 1:23lost someone on that horrible night.
- 1:26However, Halloween is still a huge part
- 1:29of North American culture and teaching
- 1:32you about culture is a big part of what
- 1:34we do here at Culips. It's even in our
- 1:36name. The CUL part of Culips stands for
- 1:40culture.
- 1:42Quiz question, do you know what the
- 1:44remaining part? Well, it's kind of a
- 1:46blended word. CUL for culture and LIPS
- 1:50for lips, Culips. So, we teach you about
- 1:53speaking English with your lips and also
- 1:56about the culture of English-speaking
- 1:58people. And
- 2:00I have a lot of good memories about
- 2:02Halloween from growing up in Canada. And
- 2:05so, that's what Indiana and I are going
- 2:07to focus on more today. Indiana, of
- 2:10course, lives in upstate New York, and
- 2:13Halloween is a big deal there. So, even
- 2:16if you didn't grow up with it, this is a
- 2:18good episode for you because uh
- 2:21Indiana's going to tell us all about how
- 2:23she celebrates Halloween, and I'll chip
- 2:25in with some memories that I have of
- 2:28celebrating Halloween as well. And I
- 2:30think this will be a really fun episode.
- 2:34And don't forget to follow along with
- 2:36the transcript and do the quiz after you
- 2:38listen. You can do all of that in the
- 2:41Culips app, and the link to check out
- 2:44the lesson in the app is in the
- 2:46description for this episode.
- 2:48Okay, with that being said, it's time to
- 2:51get started with the conversation. Uh
- 2:53hope you enjoy it. Here we go.
- 3:04>> [music]
- 3:07>> Joining me now, all the way from New
- 3:10York State, USA, is my co-host Indiana.
- 3:14Hello, Indiana. How's it going?
- 3:16>> Hey, Andrew.
- 3:18Happy spooky season. It's almost
- 3:20Halloween here, and yeah, I hope you're
- 3:22enjoying October there in Seoul.
- 3:25>> Yeah, absolutely. It's one of my
- 3:27favorite times of the year. The weather
- 3:29is finally becoming bearable. During the
- 3:34summer, it was just so hot this year,
- 3:36and all the way into September, I felt
- 3:38like it was too hot, and even like up
- 3:40until a week ago or so, I felt like it
- 3:43was too hot. But finally, now that we're
- 3:46well into October, the temperature has
- 3:49dropped, and the fall weather has just
- 3:51been beautiful. So, I love this time of
- 3:53the year. I got to say, I think fall is
- 3:56my favorite season. How about you? Do
- 3:58you like fall as well? I kind of have a
- 4:00feeling you're a fall person.
- 4:02>> I definitely do, as long as it's before
- 4:05the daylight savings ending time change,
- 4:09then then it's all good. But once that
- 4:10hits, I feel like it's winter and it's
- 4:12depressing.
- 4:14But yeah, summer and fall are definitely
- 4:15my favorite favorite seasons.
- 4:18>> Yeah, I guess maybe we could start our
- 4:21conversation just by talking about a
- 4:23basic question. Do you enjoy Halloween?
- 4:26Is it something that you look forward
- 4:28to? Do you celebrate? Do you
- 4:30participate? What are your just general
- 4:33thoughts about Halloween?
- 4:35>> I think it is so much fun to see all of
- 4:39the decorations. People go so hard in at
- 4:42least the Northeast. I'm sure all over
- 4:44the country, but in my neighborhoods, uh
- 4:47in my city, all over the place in
- 4:49Upstate New York, you will see so many
- 4:52front lawn decorations from like cute
- 4:55orange string lights to animatronic like
- 5:00um witches or monsters that if you walk
- 5:02by the front doorstep of someone's
- 5:04house, they they get triggered by the
- 5:06motion and start like making horrible
- 5:08sounds or moving. It like people spend
- 5:11so much money on these decorations and
- 5:12it's a lot of fun to see the
- 5:14neighborhoods like liven up and get so
- 5:16festive like this.
- 5:17It's similar to Christmas time where you
- 5:19see all the Christmas decorations, but
- 5:22some of those are really tacky, I find.
- 5:24[laughter]
- 5:25And I'm like, I don't know. There's a
- 5:27lot of bad Christmas decorations. The
- 5:29the lights are nice, but Halloween is
- 5:30cool. There's a lot of really spooky
- 5:32decorations and it's fun to see the
- 5:34leaves changing color and then also all
- 5:36these cool decorations coming out uh
- 5:38onto people's lawns. So, I love that as
- 5:41an adult. I I mean, I don't I'm not so
- 5:45creative about costumes. I just can't
- 5:47seem to want to find the time to come up
- 5:50with a couple's costume for me and my
- 5:52husband. We always go to our friends
- 5:53Halloween party every year.
- 5:55I've tried my best to be creative, but
- 5:57it's like such a chore for me.
- 5:59>> [laughter]
- 5:59>> So, I'm kind of over that as an adult. I
- 6:02like to watch scary movies or something,
- 6:04eat candy,
- 6:05give out candy to trick-or-treaters,
- 6:07that's great. But, when I was a kid, oh
- 6:09my god, this is like definitely one of
- 6:10the best holidays for kids cuz you just
- 6:13get a pillowcase full of candy. It's
- 6:15like who could ask for more? It's the
- 6:18best. So,
- 6:19>> [laughter]
- 6:19>> yeah, I would definitely loved it as a
- 6:21kid. But, Andrew, what's your
- 6:22relationship to Halloween when you were
- 6:25a kid and now as an adult?
- 6:27>> Yeah, I got to say that I completely
- 6:30agree. Hands down, Halloween
- 6:33is the best when you are a kid and it's
- 6:36still a lot of fun even as an adult, I
- 6:39think.
- 6:40However, when you are a kid, it is
- 6:43the best. Like, I can't emphasize enough
- 6:45just how fun Halloween is. Like, even at
- 6:49school, I I remember being in elementary
- 6:52school and the whole school being
- 6:54decorated and all of the students being
- 6:57so excited. And then Halloween day, I I
- 7:00remember we had a jack-o'-lantern
- 7:03carving competition in our school
- 7:05gymnasium and my mom was there. So, I
- 7:09guess parents came as well and doing
- 7:11activities like that, wearing your
- 7:13costume to school, and then going home
- 7:16and waiting eagerly for nightfall to
- 7:20arrive and then you could go out and go
- 7:22trick-or-treating. I think nowadays,
- 7:25to me, this is
- 7:27insane and I don't know about your
- 7:29opinion about this, Indiana. I guess I
- 7:31understand why people do it, but I see a
- 7:33lot of families trick-or-treating during
- 7:35the daytime nowadays. And families,
- 7:38especially with little kids, you know,
- 7:40they'll do it while it's still daylight,
- 7:43but for me and in my area of Canada
- 7:47where I grew up, it was tradition. You
- 7:49had to wait until it was dark. And as
- 7:51soon as it turned dark, then my parents
- 7:53would say, "Okay, guys, off you go."
- 7:56I would usually Well, when you're really
- 7:58young, you go with your parents, but
- 7:59once you get a little bit older, then
- 8:01you go with your friends. And like you
- 8:03said, Indiana, you have a pillow case
- 8:05that you would use to go and collect
- 8:08your candy as you go from door to door.
- 8:11And like you mentioned, a lot of people
- 8:14really go all out decorating their home
- 8:17for the Halloween season. And so, some
- 8:21homes would be really scary. There'd be
- 8:22like skeletons or scary jack-o'-lanterns
- 8:27or ghosts or whatever hanging around,
- 8:29and it would be almost scary to go and
- 8:32trick-or-treat. But, yeah, so much fun.
- 8:35And then afterwards, after the
- 8:38trick-or-treating, I would get home with
- 8:40my siblings and sometimes my friends,
- 8:42and you dump out your pillow case of
- 8:45candy and see what you got. And then
- 8:48really, really fun as well afterwards
- 8:51would be trading the candy. So, like,
- 8:53maybe my brother got some I don't know,
- 8:56a Snickers, and he doesn't like
- 8:57Snickers, but I love Snickers, so I
- 8:59would trade some Smarties for his
- 9:01Snickers bar or something like that.
- 9:03You'd trade candy, and yeah, super,
- 9:06super fun. So, I I have so many good
- 9:09memories of Halloween from when I was
- 9:11growing up. Uh I can't say enough just
- 9:13how fun it is.
- 9:15>> Exactly.
- 9:17>> [music]
- 9:19>> Culips is supported by our members.
- 9:21Because of them, we can keep making
- 9:23lessons like this one. So, a huge thanks
- 9:26to all of our members.
- 9:27Listening to English like you're doing
- 9:29right now is a great way to improve.
- 9:32But, listening doesn't exactly teach you
- 9:35how to speak. To get better at speaking,
- 9:37you have to speak. And for a lot of
- 9:40English learners, that's the hard part.
- 9:42Maybe you don't have anyone to practice
- 9:44English with, or when you finally get
- 9:47the chance to speak, you're nervous and
- 9:49the words just don't come out right.
- 9:51Well, that's what our live classes are
- 9:53for. Several times a week, Culips
- 9:56members meet on Zoom for a 1-hour class
- 9:59with one of our amazing teachers. We
- 10:01split into small groups of three to four
- 10:04people, so everyone gets a turn to talk.
- 10:07And there are classes for every time
- 10:09zone, and members can join as many
- 10:11classes as they want.
- 10:13This week, actually just yesterday, a
- 10:16listener from Montreal sent me a DM, and
- 10:19he told me that he's been listening on
- 10:21Spotify since August, and then he became
- 10:24a member, and he took his first class
- 10:26with Indiana. Yes, the same Indiana that
- 10:30you're listening to right now, and he
- 10:32told me that he really enjoyed and loved
- 10:35the class.
- 10:36A yearly membership is $144,
- 10:40which is just $12 a month. And for that,
- 10:43you'll get to join every class you want,
- 10:45plus get access to all of our other
- 10:47helpful study tools, and our member-only
- 10:50series, and so, so much more. And you'll
- 10:53be helping us keep the podcast going. If
- 10:56it's not for you, then just email us
- 10:58within 7 days, and we'll give you a full
- 11:00refund. To join Culips as a member, then
- 11:03just visit our website culips.com.
- 11:05That's c u l i p s.com, or click the
- 11:09link that's in the description for this
- 11:11episode.
- 11:12And now, back to chatting about
- 11:14Halloween.
- 11:17>> I I have a bit of a gripe to to share uh
- 11:21on this topic. So, first, you know, let
- 11:23me just quickly introduce for the
- 11:25uninitiated, if you're not so familiar
- 11:28with North American Halloween culture,
- 11:30trick-or-treating is common for kids
- 11:33maybe up to age 14. That's probably
- 11:36around the limit of when you would stop
- 11:38going trick or treating. On Halloween
- 11:40night, you get dressed up in a costume
- 11:42with your friends and you go
- 11:44door-to-door to all of the houses in
- 11:46your neighborhood that have their lights
- 11:48on or have decorations up and knock on
- 11:50the door and say trick or treat and then
- 11:53the person that lives there will give
- 11:54you some candy. And probably say, "Oh,
- 11:56what a cute ghost." Or, "Ooh, what a
- 11:58spooky witch." Especially if you're a
- 11:59little kid, they'll probably compliment
- 12:01how scary you are.
- 12:02It's a very nice interaction that me and
- 12:04Andrew grew up with. I'm afraid that it
- 12:07might be waning a little bit. Like I
- 12:10possibly due to urban myths and fears
- 12:15spread around like I think there was
- 12:17this big social media scare a few years
- 12:19ago specifically in California or
- 12:21especially in California about fentanyl
- 12:24being hidden in children's Halloween
- 12:26candy.
- 12:27And it was totally myth-busted. Like
- 12:30it's not a thing, but I think these
- 12:32fears still persist about like scary
- 12:36strangers doing something terrible to
- 12:38your Halloween candy and trying to like
- 12:40get your kids addicted to drugs or hurt
- 12:42your kids. And it's simply like just
- 12:45groundless. It's not a thing. Yet I
- 12:48think that this maybe I'm just guessing
- 12:50that this has contributed to there being
- 12:52a little bit less of trick or treaters.
- 12:54There's fewer trick or treaters that
- 12:55I've noticed out on Halloween in past
- 12:58years. And then I think there's the
- 13:00trunk or treat. And trunk or treat is a
- 13:03recent
- 13:05thing that is often happening at schools
- 13:07where after school on Halloween or
- 13:09sometime during that week parents will
- 13:12all come together in the parking lot and
- 13:14then they'll decorate the trunks of
- 13:15their cars and then put the candy in
- 13:17there and then the kids just circle
- 13:19around in the parking lot visiting each
- 13:21trunk of each car. Which to me it just
- 13:24feels horrible.
- 13:25>> [laughter]
- 13:25>> It is not Halloween. This is not
- 13:27trick-or-treating.
- 13:28>> I know, but it's really popular. I I
- 13:31hear about it from a lot of my students
- 13:33with kids who are living in the US.
- 13:34Like, "Oh, there's a trunk or treat
- 13:35event." And it's like, uh it just rubs
- 13:38me the wrong way, but
- 13:39>> Uh
- 13:40>> Yeah, so I'm I'm a little bit afraid
- 13:41that some of our beautiful traditions
- 13:43with Halloween are are on the decline.
- 13:45>> [laughter]
- 13:46>> I mean, the rumors of evil people
- 13:50poisoning or drugging children's candy,
- 13:54that's nothing new because even when I
- 13:56was a kid,
- 13:56>> Right.
- 13:57>> you know, your parents would say, "Never
- 13:59eat any fruit or never eat any unwrapped
- 14:02candy." Because there were always rumors
- 14:04of like some people putting razor blades
- 14:06in apples and then giving them to kids.
- 14:09So, that's like a rumor that's existed
- 14:11for 30, 40, 50 years, who knows?
- 14:14>> Yeah.
- 14:15>> And yeah, I think it's groundless. I
- 14:17think that was just a rumor. I've never
- 14:19really heard of that, but definitely I
- 14:22remember whenever I'd get my candy, like
- 14:25I said, you dump it out, dump your
- 14:27pillowcase out on the floor, and then my
- 14:30parents would always inspect it just to
- 14:32make sure that there was nothing
- 14:34sketchy. And maybe make me throw out
- 14:37some candy if it looked like it was
- 14:38homemade or something. You know,
- 14:40sometimes you'd have some senior
- 14:41citizens, some grandmas or something
- 14:43that would make some homemade candy or
- 14:46make a cookie or something and give it
- 14:47to you. And my parents would always just
- 14:50throw that out, unfortunately, just
- 14:52because it's not safe. So,
- 14:54yeah, I think those rumors have been
- 14:56around for a long time, but trunk or
- 14:58treat, I don't know about this one. This
- 15:01is the first time I'm hearing about it.
- 15:03I wonder if that sprung up during COVID.
- 15:06>> I bet.
- 15:07>> Who knows? I'm not sure, but
- 15:09I'm not for it. I I'm a traditionalist
- 15:12when it comes to Halloween, I suppose.
- 15:14>> [laughter]
- 15:15>> For sure. And I hope, you know, I want
- 15:17to encourage
- 15:18anybody who has maybe recently moved to
- 15:21the US or Canada to like, you know, push
- 15:24past these social media rumors. These
- 15:26are groundless urban myths. Like, this
- 15:29is such a cool community experience.
- 15:31Ask around about the best neighborhoods
- 15:33where there's like really great
- 15:34decorations, really great candy, and
- 15:35take your kids trick-or-treating. It's
- 15:37such a cool experience. Like, don't be
- 15:39afraid. Don't fall for these myths. It's
- 15:41not real.
- 15:43>> Indiana, did you ever have fireworks on
- 15:46Halloween or was this just a regional
- 15:49thing? I kind of feel like it might just
- 15:51be in the area of Canada near Vancouver
- 15:54where I grew up when I was a really
- 15:55young kid. We used to have fireworks
- 15:57every Halloween. Did you do this at all?
- 16:01>> No, not at all. I'm I'm not sure if I
- 16:03ever remember even like hearing
- 16:05fireworks on Halloween in the distance
- 16:07or anything like that. No.
- 16:09>> Yeah. So, I lived on a cul-de-sac and a
- 16:12cul-de-sac is like
- 16:14Do you call them cul-de-sacs in America
- 16:16as well? Do you use that? Yeah?
- 16:17>> For sure.
- 16:18>> And so, a cul-de-sac is just a street
- 16:21that's a dead-end street, but at the end
- 16:23of the road, it's like a circle and
- 16:25you'll have five or six houses that go
- 16:28around that circle. That's a cul-de-sac.
- 16:30So, I lived on a cul-de-sac and I guess
- 16:34every Halloween or around Halloween cuz
- 16:37I couldn't see us doing this on a like a
- 16:39Wednesday night if Halloween fell on a
- 16:41Wednesday, but
- 16:43I don't know. Perhaps we did it on a
- 16:44weeknight as well, but after
- 16:46trick-or-treating
- 16:47then maybe it was just like one of my
- 16:49neighbors was the weird guy who liked to
- 16:51light off fireworks. I'm not sure, but
- 16:52we'd have a little fireworks display,
- 16:55just the few homes that were on that
- 16:56cul-de-sac together. So, that's
- 16:59something that I remember and also I
- 17:01remember it being pretty loud and scary
- 17:04cuz I was just like
- 17:06seven, eight years old. So, it was a
- 17:09little bit frightening for me, but yeah,
- 17:12I have that memory of
- 17:14seeing fireworks and having a fireworks
- 17:16show after trick or treating.
- 17:18>> Mhm, that's cool. That sounds very like
- 17:21a special memory. Um yeah, I think that
- 17:23might be unique to your neighborhood.
- 17:24Very sweet, very cool.
- 17:25>> Yeah.
- 17:27So, these days you're not a costume
- 17:30wearer. Wearer. I'm a little bit
- 17:32disappointed to hear that.
- 17:33>> [laughter]
- 17:34>> It's such a It's such a fun part of
- 17:37Halloween as an adult is wearing a
- 17:39costume. Although, I got to say that I
- 17:41don't dress up either, so I can't really
- 17:44blame you, but do you do anything
- 17:47for a costume? Like even just like kind
- 17:49of
- 17:50how can I say half-assed costume?
- 17:54Anything [laughter] like that?
- 17:54>> Yeah.
- 17:55I think uh if you're going to go to a
- 17:58party, Halloween party, as an adult or a
- 18:00child, you've got to wear something. So,
- 18:02yeah, sometimes it's a little more
- 18:04half-assed than other years. Like I have
- 18:07um my backup, I would say, is I have
- 18:10this sort of
- 18:12mhm red dress that's kind of like
- 18:16uh you could call it bodycon. It's like
- 18:19fitting the contours of your body. It's
- 18:20kind of a tight dress, but then it has
- 18:22these flowy sleeves, and it's dark red.
- 18:24It has these black lace-up bodice um uh
- 18:29Hard to describe fashion. Hard to do
- 18:31this in English, even though this
- 18:32[laughter] is my native language. There
- 18:33are these black uh ribbons lacing up the
- 18:36the chest bodice area. So, it's kind of
- 18:38a little bit a little bit sexy, I would
- 18:40say. So, it's perfect for like a sexy
- 18:42vampire or a sexy pirate. Like it could
- 18:44kind of go either way, depending on what
- 18:46accessories you add. So, that's like
- 18:48pretty easy to to work with. And then on
- 18:50the other hand, I have this really
- 18:51ridiculous frog onesie that like my
- 18:55husband ordered me as a gag gift one
- 18:57year, and it's like pajamas, basically.
- 18:59A onesie is like a usually for babies.
- 19:03A full body outfit that you have to take
- 19:06off your entire body, and it has a
- 19:08little hood with frog a frog face. So, I
- 19:11can always just kind of throw that on
- 19:13and well, I'm a frog. Absolute minimum
- 19:15effort I could possibly put into it.
- 19:18[laughter] But uh
- 19:19one costume I'm pretty proud of from a
- 19:21few years ago. So, you're going to know
- 19:23this, Andrew, cuz you love music. Um I
- 19:26was David Byrne from Stop Making Sense.
- 19:29So, I slip slicked back my hair. I have
- 19:32short hair. I don't know if everybody
- 19:34knows that. I have very short hair. So,
- 19:36I slicked it back. I went to a thrift
- 19:38store to find the biggest gray suit I
- 19:41could possibly find. I padded it padded
- 19:43it out to make it sort of look like
- 19:46David Byrne in Stop Making Sense.
- 19:48Listeners, definitely look up David
- 19:50Byrne Stop Making Sense to get an idea
- 19:52of this costume. And I think I looked
- 19:54pretty spot on. It was pretty cool. And
- 19:56then I had my husband put a lampshade on
- 20:00his head and wear like all black so that
- 20:02he was the the lamp that he dances with
- 20:05on stage during This Must Be the Place.
- 20:07So, that was a pretty niche but cool
- 20:10costume I was pretty proud of.
- 20:12I put a lot of effort into that. And
- 20:14then like my friends were like, "Yeah,
- 20:15cool." But like I didn't get the praise
- 20:18I was hoping for. So, then I was just
- 20:20like, "Why would I put effort into this
- 20:22if you're not going to say, 'Oh, man,
- 20:23cool costume.'"
- 20:25I was a little little upset about the
- 20:27the lack of attention for it cuz I was
- 20:29like, "Man, I went to all these thrift
- 20:31stores."
- 20:32>> [laughter]
- 20:32>> Yeah. Oh. That sounds like a great
- 20:35costume. And yeah, for listeners who
- 20:37don't know this reference, David Byrne
- 20:40is the singer from a band called the
- 20:42Talking Heads, famous American band from
- 20:45I guess the '70s and '80s.
- 20:48And yeah, they have this famous concert
- 20:51film called Stop Making Sense. And in
- 20:55that film, David Byrne is wearing this
- 20:57huge business suit, this very very very
- 21:00oversized business suit. And when he
- 21:02dances around on the stage, it just
- 21:04looks ridiculous but also extremely cool
- 21:07at the same time. Uh so, that's a that's
- 21:10an awesome costume. I wish I had thought
- 21:12of that one myself back in the day.
- 21:14That's such a good idea.
- 21:17>> Yeah, it's uh it was cool, but I guess
- 21:21that's the costume in recent years I'm
- 21:23most most proud of. It was also a great
- 21:25gag in middle school. I dressed up one
- 21:27year as Indiana Jones. Haha, that's you
- 21:31know, my name. So, everybody likes that
- 21:33one.
- 21:34>> [laughter]
- 21:35>> Um but, how about you, Andrew? Do you
- 21:37have any iconic costumes from your life
- 21:39you could recount for us?
- 21:41>> Uh
- 21:44Let me I remember being maybe a cowboy
- 21:46was one of my very first costumes when I
- 21:48was like 4 years old. I remember
- 21:50dressing up as a cowboy.
- 21:52And then in grade school, I remember
- 21:55being a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, and
- 21:57my mom and I worked on making the
- 21:59costume together. We built like the
- 22:02turtle shell from cardboard. So, that
- 22:04one was a cool one.
- 22:06>> Nice.
- 22:07>> When I was a little bit older, I
- 22:10remember my friend and I, we both went
- 22:12as crossword puzzles. So, we just wore
- 22:15white clothes, and we like just wrote a
- 22:17bunch of random letters all over them.
- 22:20And then we attached a pen to ourselves
- 22:22with a piece of string, and people could
- 22:24try and find a word and circle it. That
- 22:27was like when we were in university, and
- 22:30we'd always go to concerts. Uh as you
- 22:33get older,
- 22:35Halloween turns from a fun family-based
- 22:40activity, I think, to like a really
- 22:42party-heavy day. So, especially when I
- 22:45was a university student, every
- 22:46Halloween would be a big party day, a
- 22:49house party, often with bands playing
- 22:51music, and they would always cover other
- 22:54people's music. There were no originals.
- 22:56It was always a cover concert. So,
- 22:59people learning and playing other bands'
- 23:01music, kind of like dressing up in a
- 23:03costume in a musical way. So, that was
- 23:05always really fun. Yeah, I remember
- 23:07being that crossword puzzle, and that
- 23:10was a really popular one. People like to
- 23:12come up and try and find a word and
- 23:14circle it.
- 23:15>> [laughter]
- 23:15>> And what else?
- 23:18Again, with the same friend,
- 23:21one time
- 23:23I think it was right after the launch of
- 23:26the iPad. My friend looks a lot like
- 23:29Steve Jobs. So, he dressed up as Steve
- 23:31Jobs and nailed it. He looked exactly
- 23:34like Steve Jobs, and I thought it would
- 23:36be funny to be an iPad. So, I dressed up
- 23:39as an iPad, and we walked around
- 23:40together, and that one was also really
- 23:42popular for some reason.
- 23:44>> [laughter]
- 23:45>> Yeah, I mean, I haven't dressed up in
- 23:48several years. I don't really celebrate
- 23:50Halloween now that I live in Korea,
- 23:52unfortunately. It's just not as much of
- 23:55a thing here, so I don't get to
- 23:57celebrate it the same way that I did
- 23:59back in Canada, but still I have a
- 24:02really fond place for the holiday in my
- 24:04heart just from all of those great
- 24:06memories I had growing up.
- 24:09>> That's cool. I really like the crossword
- 24:11puzzle idea. Something Something
- 24:13interactive for a costume is hard to
- 24:15pull off. That sounded like a really
- 24:16good one.
- 24:18>> Yeah, and I remember I remember one of
- 24:21the last Halloweens that I spent in
- 24:23Canada was at a house party where my
- 24:27band was playing, and I was dressed up
- 24:29like a dinosaur. I had this really
- 24:30ridiculous dinosaur costume, and I
- 24:33remember trying to play guitar and sing
- 24:37dressed up like a dinosaur. It was hard,
- 24:40but it was a lot of fun.
- 24:42>> Oh my god.
- 24:43>> [laughter]
- 24:44>> Yeah, good times. Good times.
- 24:46>> Absolutely.
- 24:48>> Well, Indiana, should we leave things
- 24:49here? Was there anything else that you
- 24:51wanted to to mention about Halloween
- 24:53this year?
- 24:54>> Yeah, the only thing that I wanted to
- 24:56bring up, just specifically for anybody
- 24:59living in the United States or Canada
- 25:01who you are living in a neighborhood,
- 25:04you're starting to see these Halloween
- 25:06decorations popping up, and either
- 25:09you're thinking, "Oh, this is so great.
- 25:11I want to give out candy to
- 25:12trick-or-treaters. I want to
- 25:13participate." Or maybe you're thinking,
- 25:15"Oh, this is not for me. Like, I do not
- 25:17want people ringing on my ringing my
- 25:19doorbell. No, thank you. I'm busy or I
- 25:22just don't want to talk to everybody."
- 25:24So, if you are interested in
- 25:25participating in Halloween and giving
- 25:27out candy to trick-or-treaters, you
- 25:30definitely want to keep your front
- 25:32lights on, maybe your porch lights, the
- 25:34lights in the front of your house. Um
- 25:36and make sure you have some degree of
- 25:39decoration. That shows that your house
- 25:42is welcoming trick-or-treaters. Even
- 25:44just a little bit of like orange string
- 25:46lights or a pumpkin or two with or
- 25:49without the carved faces, maybe a few
- 25:52decorations from the Halloween store,
- 25:55which they always have these pop-up
- 25:56stores that appear
- 25:59in a lot of cities. So, just having a
- 26:01few things in the lawn to show, "Okay,
- 26:03this is a house that is like
- 26:05participating in Halloween." Make it
- 26:08look a little spooky and keep some
- 26:10lights on to show that you're home. Now,
- 26:12it's the opposite if you do not want to
- 26:14participate. Keep your lawn free and
- 26:16clear of all decorations. And even if
- 26:18you're going to be home that night, try
- 26:20to keep your couple front lights off,
- 26:23like the porch lights or that lights in
- 26:24the front of your house. Keep those off
- 26:26and you know, maybe stay on the second
- 26:28floor or in the back of the house and
- 26:29hang out there cuz I think that is a
- 26:31clear indicator, "Okay, this house is
- 26:33not engaging in it." You know, make it
- 26:35look like no one's home and then people
- 26:37will not will not come to your house.
- 26:39But, I I thought I would mention that in
- 26:41case it's not super clear. Like, do I
- 26:43have to participate in Halloween? No,
- 26:45you definitely don't. But, you want to
- 26:47make it your house look a certain way if
- 26:49you are or are not going to participate
- 26:51with the trick-or-treaters.
- 26:53>> Yeah, absolutely. Turning your lights
- 26:55off, your outdoor lights, that's the
- 26:57classic signal that is a waste of time
- 27:00as a trick-or-treater to walk up that
- 27:02driveway and knock on the door because
- 27:04nobody's home or they don't want to
- 27:06participate. So,
- 27:07yeah, that would always be the signal
- 27:09for me when I was a trick-or-treater.
- 27:11Oh, the lights are off. Okay, I'm going
- 27:13to skip that home.
- 27:14>> For sure.
- 27:15>> Indiana, we'll leave just with a fun
- 27:17question here to wrap things up and sign
- 27:20off. And I'm wondering, what was your
- 27:23favorite candy to receive when you used
- 27:26to go trick-or-treating?
- 27:28>> Oh, such a good question.
- 27:31>> [sighs]
- 27:33>> Let me think about that. I really loved
- 27:35Nerds candy. I found it so fun to have
- 27:37that tiny tiny box of Nerds, which are
- 27:39just these
- 27:40little clusters of sugar. Oh, those were
- 27:43so fun to eat. Um, what else? I've
- 27:46always loved gummy candy. Anything gummy
- 27:49related was great for me. The tiny
- 27:51Haribo Haribo packets or um,
- 27:54ah, yeah.
- 27:55Pretty much anything. I think the only
- 27:57thing I didn't like was something with
- 27:59peanut butter in it. I know I'm a
- 28:00weirdo, but peanut butter and chocolate,
- 28:02I just like could live without. I'm
- 28:04maybe maybe the only person on the
- 28:05planet who's over peanut butter and
- 28:07chocolate.
- 28:08>> My favorite. [laughter]
- 28:09>> Um, I know. I know, it's weird. Well,
- 28:11yeah, something gummy related, maybe the
- 28:13Nerds candies. Yeah, those were great.
- 28:15What what do you think? What was your
- 28:16favorite?
- 28:18>> Well, in my neighborhood, we had this
- 28:20one home which was like four times
- 28:22bigger than all of the other homes and
- 28:24it was on the top of this little hill.
- 28:27So, we always nicknamed that home the
- 28:29rich guy. Like the rich guy lived in
- 28:31that house. It was just a couple, an
- 28:32older couple, and they had no children.
- 28:35And they were very mysterious. Like they
- 28:38never really interacted with the other
- 28:40neighbors at all. They were just up
- 28:42there on their hill in their big house.
- 28:44Like to us it would have been a mansion.
- 28:46I'm sure it was just kind of slightly
- 28:49bigger, slightly fancier house than all
- 28:50the other houses in the neighborhood.
- 28:53But, on Halloween, we'd get to go to the
- 28:55rich guy's house and trick-or-treat, and
- 28:58he never disappointed. He'd always give
- 29:00us full cans of Coca-Cola, so we'd get a
- 29:03full can
- 29:05of Coca-Cola and a full chocolate bar.
- 29:07Not like the mini chocolate bar that you
- 29:10would get, like you know the
- 29:11trick-or-treat size candy bar that's 1/3
- 29:15or 1/4 the size of a regular chocolate
- 29:18bar. He'd give us a full chocolate bar,
- 29:20so like a full-size Twix or Snickers or
- 29:23something.
- 29:25And so, that was just incredible. He
- 29:27never disappointed, so yeah, I always
- 29:29loved going to the rich guy's house on
- 29:31the hill.
- 29:32He was awesome.
- 29:33>> [laughter]
- 29:34>> Moms hate him. Like, not only are you
- 29:37getting candy, but caffeinated soda. Oh
- 29:39my gosh.
- 29:40>> [laughter]
- 29:41>> That's crazy.
- 29:42>> We'd always scheme like, how can we go
- 29:44to this guy's house again? Like, if we
- 29:46change our costume, will he recognize
- 29:48us? Can we hit him up twice because he
- 29:51was so generous? So, yeah.
- 29:53>> Wow.
- 29:53>> Shout-out to the rich guy.
- 29:56>> [laughter]
- 29:56>> Oh, that's nice.
- 29:58>> All right. So, we'll wrap things up
