- 0:00Hello beautiful, I'm Ruth the Witch, and
- 0:02this is my most requested video
- 0:03literally ever, a hair care routine.
- 0:06>> [music]
- 0:10>> Why would we want a hair care routine
- 0:11from you? Uh, I don't know, maybe
- 0:13because I'm struggling to fit it all
- 0:14into the frame. In this video, I'll be
- 0:16showing you guys what products I use,
- 0:18how I wash my hair, how I take care of
- 0:20my hair in between washes, how I sleep
- 0:22on it to prevent breakage, basically
- 0:24everything in as much detail as possible
- 0:26of how I take care of my hair, but
- 0:28first, I want to give you guys my
- 0:30favorite free tips that have nothing to
- 0:33do with anything you buy, what products
- 0:34you use, etc. I'm just going to give you
- 0:36guys my main rules of thumb when it
- 0:37comes to hair care. My first rule is no
- 0:40heat, and I know y'all are nodding
- 0:41along. Here's where I'm going to lose a
- 0:43few people right off the bat. That
- 0:45includes when you're washing it. I'm so
- 0:47sorry. I'm so sorry. You're avoiding all
- 0:49of these heat products, and then you're
- 0:51standing under 100° water every single
- 0:53time you wash your hair in the shower.
- 0:55Look, I know. Sometimes I leave it on
- 0:57warm or whatever. It doesn't even have
- 0:58to be all or nothing. If cold throughout
- 1:00your whole washing process is too much,
- 1:03just rinse your conditioner with cold
- 1:04water or use lukewarm water. Whatever
- 1:07you can do, it's better than scalding
- 1:09hot water on your hair. I also,
- 1:11obviously, don't use a curling iron,
- 1:13curling wand. I just use heatless curls
- 1:15if I want to do a style like that. I
- 1:17don't use a straightener. I don't use a
- 1:18blow dryer if at all possible. And I
- 1:20know y'all are thinking, "Um, that's not
- 1:21really feasible. If you're in a rush,
- 1:23your hair is wet, you got to go
- 1:24somewhere." I completely understand
- 1:25that. I would recommend using a hair
- 1:27dryer on the cool setting because it's
- 1:29not doing as much damage. Rule number
- 1:31two, and keep in mind, this rule isn't
- 1:33going to apply for everyone. I have fine
- 1:35straight hair. I know people with
- 1:36curlier hair can't exactly do this, but
- 1:38I do not detangle it whenever it's wet.
- 1:41And if your hair texture looks anything
- 1:43like mine, I recommend you do the same
- 1:44thing. Whenever you have fine hair like
- 1:46this, it breaks off very, very easily
- 1:49whenever it's wet. So, I brush my hair
- 1:51really good before a shower, and then I
- 1:53let it dry a little bit after before I
- 1:55do anything. If anything, I'll just kind
- 1:57of smooth it out with my fingers until
- 1:58it's a little bit more dry. Or, I'll
- 2:00take a wide-tooth comb and very gently
- 2:02start at the ends, but I try to avoid it
- 2:04all detangling when it's wet. Tip number
- 2:06two kind of leads me to tip number
- 2:08three, and this applies for everyone. Be
- 2:11gentle with your hair. Be gentle with
- 2:15it. Do not just like hack at your head
- 2:17whenever you're brushing it or styling
- 2:19it because all of the times that you
- 2:21just do it once, those add up. If you're
- 2:23in a really bad mood, one of those moods
- 2:24where you just want to hit yourself on
- 2:26the head with a brush, let's not
- 2:27detangle it right then, okay? Throw it
- 2:29in a messy bun, a messy braid, and
- 2:31detangle it later. Just be as gentle
- 2:33with it as you possibly can. Number four
- 2:35is that less is more when it comes to
- 2:37hair care. I didn't mean for that to
- 2:39rhyme. That's always been my motto even
- 2:41before I got into a sort of routine with
- 2:43my products like I am now is a lot of
- 2:45times when it comes to taking care of
- 2:46your hair,
- 2:48but a lot of times when it comes to
- 2:49taking care of your hair, it has just as
- 2:51much to do with what you don't do to it
- 2:53as what you do do to it. I recommend to
- 2:55avoid using unnecessary products that
- 2:58are just going to cause a build-up on
- 2:59your scalp and prevent growth because
- 3:01keep in mind, the growth starts up here.
- 3:03You need to take care of your scalp just
- 3:06like you would take care of the ends of
- 3:07the hair. Example of what I would
- 3:08consider an unnecessary product would be
- 3:10like dry shampoo. A product like that
- 3:12will make your hair look good in the
- 3:13moment, but it's only going to cause
- 3:15build-up on your scalp preventing that
- 3:17growth. If your hair is greasy, greasy
- 3:19hairstyle. I also want to point out even
- 3:21things that are objectively good for
- 3:23your hair like a conditioning hair mask
- 3:25or things like that. If you use it too
- 3:27much, just oversaturating your hair with
- 3:30product, that will cause build-up on
- 3:32your scalp. We don't want that. So, less
- 3:34is more. Less heat, less products, less
- 3:37damage. Tip number four of less is more
- 3:40leads us into tip number five, which is
- 3:42don't over wash it. And when I say don't
- 3:44over wash it, don't freak out. I'm not
- 3:45saying that you have to hair train or
- 3:47anything like that. I am just saying you
- 3:49don't need to to washing it every single
- 3:51day. I don't care what sort of hair type
- 3:53you have, you don't need to wash it
- 3:54every single day. And I know that
- 3:55everybody needs to wash their hair at
- 3:57different times according to your hair
- 3:59texture, your thickness, if you have
- 4:01curls, if your hair is straight. I know
- 4:02that everybody's hair gets greasy at
- 4:04different periods. But you do not need
- 4:06to be washing it every single day.
- 4:09Whenever I was still box dyeing my hair
- 4:10pretty often, I could actually go way
- 4:12longer in between washes because my hair
- 4:14was so dry. Side note, and I'm not
- 4:16considering this a tip, y'all do
- 4:18whatever you want with your hair, but I
- 4:19am going to kind of like squeeze it in
- 4:21there. If your goal is length, then you
- 4:23do need to think about in the long run
- 4:24how long you will be able to keep up
- 4:27with your hair if you are currently
- 4:29bleaching it, dyeing it. I loved my
- 4:31black hair so much, but it got to a
- 4:34point where there was so much build-up
- 4:36on the ends that I was either going to
- 4:37have to cut it or stop dyeing it. So, I
- 4:40picked my length and I stopped dyeing
- 4:42it. Now that most of the dye is out of
- 4:44the top section of my hair especially, I
- 4:46do have to wash my hair more often than
- 4:48I used to, but I kind of just wash it
- 4:51whenever I feel like it, whenever it
- 4:52feels like it needs it. But basically,
- 4:54you just don't want to strip your hair
- 4:55too much. Here come the comments calling
- 4:57me dirty, but it's good to let your hair
- 4:59produce its own natural oil every so
- 5:01often. And my last tip, which I think is
- 5:03number six, is
- 5:08Got it. Had to look at my notes. My last
- 5:10tip, which is number six, is sleep in a
- 5:13protective style regardless of your hair
- 5:16texture. And a protective style can be
- 5:17anything from a loose braid to a bun,
- 5:20but we're going to talk more about that
- 5:21later in the video. Let's get into it.
- 5:23You think hair care and you think how do
- 5:24you wash it, but I'm going to show you
- 5:26everything else as well. We're going to
- 5:27start from the most basic knowledge and
- 5:29then work our way up with detangling. I
- 5:32just took it out of a bun and I'm in
- 5:33between washes as you can probably tell.
- 5:36If you follow me on TikTok, you probably
- 5:37always see me use one of two brushes,
- 5:39either this wet brush. This one's
- 5:40actually for curly hair. I obviously
- 5:42don't have curly hair, but I still like
- 5:43it. And this other one was my husband's
- 5:45grandmother's, and although I usually
- 5:47use it for aesthetic videos, I actually
- 5:49really, really do love the bristles on
- 5:51this one for when my hair is already
- 5:52detangled. I sometimes use this one at
- 5:54night, and it just makes my hair feel so
- 5:55soft. Wet brushes are amazing for
- 5:57detangling, in my opinion. They're
- 5:58really gentle on the hair, but if your
- 6:00hair is particularly tangled, I'm always
- 6:02going to recommend starting with just
- 6:04using your fingers to kind of gently
- 6:06unwind some of the strands or a wider
- 6:08tooth comb. I really just cannot stress
- 6:11enough to be patient with your hair.
- 6:12You're probably going to hear me say
- 6:14this all throughout the video, but it's
- 6:15because it's regardless of what you're
- 6:18using to detangle it, what you're using
- 6:19to wash it, what you're oiling your ends
- 6:21with, none of it will matter if you're
- 6:23very rough with your hair. You just got
- 6:25to learn to be gentle with it. Because
- 6:28you can oil your ends with rosemary oil,
- 6:30use the nicest shampoo every day of the
- 6:32week, but every time you brush it, if
- 6:33you're just doing this, you're you're
- 6:35pulling out all of that progress, babe.
- 6:37Let's Let's not do that anymore. Moving
- 6:39on, something that I love to use on it
- 6:40in between washes, and none of this is
- 6:42sponsored, by the way, is this rice
- 6:44water spray from As I Am. I actually got
- 6:46sent this the first time as a free gift
- 6:48when I ordered the shampoo off of their
- 6:50site, and now I'm obsessed with it. But
- 6:52basically, throughout the week, in
- 6:53between washes, after a workout, in the
- 6:56morning, it doesn't really matter, just
- 6:57whenever I'm feeling up to it, I'll just
- 6:59kind of spritz this on my scalp to
- 7:01freshen up my hair.
- 7:04Sometimes I'll do it before bed when I'm
- 7:06doing my skin care, let it dry before
- 7:08putting on my bonnet. I spray it
- 7:09anywhere on my hairline to get onto my
- 7:11scalp, so I'll do it on the back of my
- 7:13neck as well.
- 7:16And sometimes I even just kind of give
- 7:18it an overall spritz before oiling the
- 7:20ends, but I usually just focus it on my
- 7:22scalp. And I am someone that has
- 7:23problems with flaking. My scalp will
- 7:25flake or get dry very easily or get
- 7:27build-up on it. So, I prefer not to use
- 7:30any scalp products that would cause
- 7:32build-up on top of your head, like a dry
- 7:34shampoo, for example, will not use that.
- 7:36This is very light, doesn't cause any
- 7:38build-up for me. I have it sprayed onto
- 7:40my hair. Now, I'm going to brush it. See
- 7:42how I'm being gentle, starting from the
- 7:44bottom, going up.
- 7:46Very mindful. Also, look at the area
- 7:49where my hair dye was completely missed.
- 7:51For those of you that don't know, I used
- 7:52to box dye my hair black. I'm growing it
- 7:55out, obviously. After I get done
- 7:57brushing it, I'm going to show you guys
- 7:58what oils I use. And keep in mind, I
- 8:00have very fine hair. So, whenever I'm
- 8:02telling you guys a product does not
- 8:04leave a residue or doesn't make your
- 8:05hair feel heavy, I mean it. And with as
- 8:07long and as heavy as my hair is already,
- 8:10a lot of my routine is based around it
- 8:12feeling light and airy. That's what I
- 8:14want. I use two different hair oils, and
- 8:16sometimes I'll just rotate back and
- 8:17forth between the two, or I'll mix them
- 8:19and put them both on at the same time.
- 8:20The first one is a blend of rosemary and
- 8:22castor oil, and this one is from Yanni
- 8:24Best. The second one is just a
- 8:26straight-up rosemary oil, and this one
- 8:27is from As I Am.
- 8:30Since I usually oil my ends either right
- 8:32before bed or sometime in the evening, I
- 8:33figured I would just group that in with
- 8:35showing you guys how I take care of my
- 8:36hair while I sleep. Something I cannot
- 8:39say I cannot preach enough is that
- 8:41taking care of your hair while you sleep
- 8:45is just as, if not more important than
- 8:47how you take care of it while you're
- 8:48awake. I promise you. You don't realize
- 8:51how much of your life you spend
- 8:52sleeping, and if you're not sleeping,
- 8:53you're in bed for half of it. So, yes,
- 8:56it's important. If you are constantly
- 8:58having damage and breakage, and you
- 8:59don't know where it's coming from, cuz
- 9:01you're like, "Oh my gosh, I'm doing
- 9:02everything right." It might be happening
- 9:03while you're asleep. But, I'm going to
- 9:04show you guys how to avoid it. My
- 9:06favorite way to protect my hair while
- 9:07I'm sleeping, especially when it's
- 9:09freshly cleaned, freshly washed, it's
- 9:11not exactly right now, but anyway, is
- 9:13with a bonnet. I have like four of them.
- 9:15This is my newest one, and it's my
- 9:17favorite, and it's lined with satin on
- 9:19the inside. This one's from Yanni Best.
- 9:21You don't have to get one from Yanni
- 9:22Best. I don't think that that one is
- 9:23right there that's hanging up. But,
- 9:25whenever I sleep with it in a bonnet, I
- 9:26don't use a hair tie or a scrunchie or
- 9:28anything at all. I just wrap my hair up
- 9:30and wear it loose underneath this. I
- 9:32know that everyone wears them and loves
- 9:33them for different reasons, but for me
- 9:35in particular, it's a lifesaver when it
- 9:36comes to my length. Obviously, my hair
- 9:38is not particularly thick or textured
- 9:40where I have a whole lot of problems
- 9:41with frizz, although it really does help
- 9:43with frizz as well when you're doing
- 9:44heatless curls, things like that. But,
- 9:46because of how long my hair is, even
- 9:48when I braid my hair back in a loose
- 9:50braid, which is my other favorite way to
- 9:51sleep, sometimes I still wake up with it
- 9:53wrapped all around me, and there have
- 9:55been multiple occasions where my cat has
- 9:57climbed up my braid because it's been
- 10:00hanging on the side of the bed. That
- 10:02might be just a me problem, that might
- 10:03be an original experience, but it I woke
- 10:06up to the sounds of him scratching and
- 10:09breaking my hair because he was just
- 10:10playing with my braid like a rope.
- 10:12That's where this bad boy comes in
- 10:14handy. I also get a lot of questions on
- 10:16TikTok about how I put my hair up inside
- 10:18of the bonnet. So, before I oil the
- 10:20ends, I'm going to show you guys how I
- 10:21bonnet it.
- 10:23Yeah. In order to reap all of the
- 10:25benefits of said bonnet, I don't like to
- 10:27use a hair tie. That way, my hair can
- 10:29just be completely loose underneath. I
- 10:31loosely gather all of my hair on top of
- 10:33my head as if I'm going to put it in a
- 10:35bun because I kind of am. Obviously, I
- 10:38usually have a brush better. I'm just
- 10:39doing this for the video purposes. I
- 10:41kind of gather it like that. Cute.
- 10:44I just
- 10:46put the bonnet on.
- 10:48Like that.
- 10:49I need to adjust it, of course, a little
- 10:50bit.
- 10:54Now, I'll show you guys how I tie it up.
- 10:59I do a double knot to make sure it stays
- 11:00on. [music]
- 11:03I also want to avoid having the edges of
- 11:05your bonnet resting on the actual edges
- 11:07of your hairline. That way, it's not
- 11:09rubbing against it and causing friction
- 11:11or hair loss cuz that's the opposite of
- 11:13what we want. And there we go. This is
- 11:16so comfortable, and also something that
- 11:18I like to do is I pull it over my eyes
- 11:21and the tops of my ears whenever I'm
- 11:22going to sleep, and it's
- 11:24like just for sensory purposes, hair
- 11:26care aside, it's really nice.
- 11:28>> [music]
- 11:30>> If you are someone who is the opposite
- 11:32and a bonnet sounds like an absolute
- 11:33sensory nightmare, all hope is not lost.
- 11:36You can get a satin pillowcase. This one
- 11:38is obviously really old. My husband is
- 11:41the type of person that just cannot put
- 11:42a bonnet on his head. I've tried to
- 11:43recommend it to him because he does have
- 11:45really long hair, but we use these, so
- 11:47it's all okay. And he also has curly
- 11:49hair, so he said that these help with
- 11:51frizz as well. Now, let's get into how I
- 11:53oil it. When I'm going to oil my hair, I
- 11:55usually put it in a loose braid first,
- 11:57either to sleep in or just to wear on
- 11:59the house. I'll show you what I mean. If
- 12:00you've started braiding your hair before
- 12:01you go to bed in order to avoid breakage
- 12:03and you're wondering why it's not
- 12:04working, it might be because either the
- 12:06braid is too tight or you're wearing
- 12:09multiple braids instead of just one
- 12:10loose one. When I do sleep in a braid,
- 12:12which is pretty often, I'm not going to
- 12:14lie, I try to keep it very loose, as you
- 12:16can see, and I continuously brush the
- 12:18ends out as I'm braiding it. When your
- 12:20hair is all grouped together like this,
- 12:22it's stronger. To keep the braid very
- 12:24loose, I actually am going to skip down
- 12:26a little bit past where I ended it and
- 12:28tie it with a scrunchie. These are also
- 12:30from Yanni Best, which is the same place
- 12:32that I got this bonnet and they're
- 12:34satin.
- 12:35I have my hair oils and I'm going to use
- 12:38both, starting with the rosemary oil
- 12:40from As I Am. These both come with a
- 12:42dropper. It does not take much.
- 12:44I'm just going to drop a few drops on
- 12:46the ends of my hair.
- 12:52Spread it out kind of evenly. Oh my
- 12:53gosh, rosemary oil smells so good.
- 12:56Smells amazing. It smells so clean.
- 12:59Now, I'm going to take the rosemary and
- 13:00castor oil.
- 13:01If I can get it open.
- 13:04Just going to take a few drops to the
- 13:05end of my braid.
- 13:09Trying to really focus on the ends.
- 13:12And then I take what's left on my hands
- 13:15and kind of just distribute it over the
- 13:17braid. I might even add a little bit
- 13:18more to my hands.
- 13:21Two.
- 13:22Because my hair is so fine, I don't
- 13:25really put oil on the top of my scalp
- 13:27often. Even if it's going to be a
- 13:28situation where I'm immediately going to
- 13:30wash it out because things just tend to
- 13:32sit so heavy on my scalp. It would
- 13:35probably take like three washes to
- 13:37remove it, which is fine, but that's why
- 13:39I don't do that very often. I usually
- 13:40just focus it on the ends.
- 13:42That's it.
- 13:49>> [singing]
- 13:55[music]
- 13:55>> Today is the day. It's hair wash day. If
- 13:57you can't tell, I really need it. My
- 13:59hair is very greasy. I don't know if you
- 14:01guys can hear it on camera, but it's
- 14:02actually storming outside, but I had
- 14:03already started filming the video and
- 14:05I'm not planning on going anywhere. So,
- 14:06we're going to wash it. I'm going to
- 14:07show you what products I use, which
- 14:09should be really simple because it's
- 14:10only two, shampoo and conditioner. Most
- 14:12importantly, I'm going to show you how I
- 14:14wash my hair. Obviously, before I like
- 14:16to detangle it very thoroughly. Now,
- 14:18let's get started.
- 14:20>> [music]
- 14:25>> Could you do me a favor and tell me if
- 14:26I'm in frame [music] correctly? Good.
- 14:28So, like when I wash it.
- 14:33>> [music]
- 14:33>> Thank you, baby. Time to get into the
- 14:34washing process. Like I said at the
- 14:36beginning of the video, I prefer to use
- 14:38cold if not lukewarm water usually
- 14:40whenever I'm washing it, but I could not
- 14:42do that while filming because I was
- 14:43freezing trying to film this with the
- 14:45curtain open. I start by thoroughly
- 14:48rinsing my hair with just water and
- 14:49massaging my scalp with the silicone
- 14:51scalp massager. I got mine from Walmart
- 14:53and also just my fingers. Pretend like
- 14:55you don't even have the option to use
- 14:57shampoo or conditioner afterwards.
- 14:58That's how thoroughly you should be
- 15:00rinsing your hair before you even add
- 15:01the soap. I only apply my shampoo from
- 15:03the top of my scalp down to the base of
- 15:05my neck and then I apply my conditioner
- 15:07from my ends all the way up to the base
- 15:09of my neck. Make sure you squeeze out as
- 15:10much water as you can before applying
- 15:12the conditioner so it gets more directly
- 15:14on your hair. I'm using the As I Am rice
- 15:16water shampoo and conditioner combo. A
- 15:18little longer than a few minutes later,
- 15:20I like to let the conditioner set on my
- 15:22head while I wash the rest of my body,
- 15:24so that's why I normally wrap it up and
- 15:25then rinse it out thoroughly. After my
- 15:27shower, I don't typically put any
- 15:29products at all. The only products I
- 15:30apply is throughout the week in between
- 15:32washes, and I also let it air dry
- 15:34because I don't put any heat on it. I
- 15:35also wanted to tell you guys a product
- 15:37that I forgot to mention in the freaking
- 15:39video that I use sometimes is this
- 15:41Jamaican black castor oil spray from As
- 15:43I Am. I just spray it on the ends of my
- 15:45hair when it feels dry and it makes it
- 15:46so shiny. It's also a good detangler for
- 15:49if your hair is particularly tangled. I
- 15:51don't think that's what they sell it as,
- 15:52but I use it as that sometimes. And
- 15:53that's pretty much it besides this one
- 15:55last tip that I'm going to end the video
- 15:57on, which I think is more important than
- 15:59everything else I've mentioned. You have
- 16:01to eat and nourish your body if you want
- 16:03to grow hair anywhere other than on your
- 16:05arms. I know that sounds harsh, but it's
- 16:07true. Here's what I prepped for lunch
- 16:08this week. I've got some orzo pasta,
- 16:10some shrimp, Cajun sausage, corn, and a
- 16:13remoulade dressing with lemon.
- 16:16This is your sign to sit down and eat a
- 16:18meal because you deserve it. It's good
- 16:19for your mind, good for your body, good
- 16:21for your hair, okay? I love you.
