  21. 0:52who humble me
  22. 0:54with the ways they improve our world
  23. 0:56with their work
  24. 1:05as for me
  25. 1:06i'm 90 sure the main reason i'm here is
  26. 1:09because i have a song called 22
  27. 1:20and let me just say
  28. 1:22i am
  29. 1:23elated
  30. 1:24to be here with you today as we
  31. 1:26celebrate and graduate
  32. 1:28new york university's class of 2022
  33. 1:40not a single one of us here today has
  34. 1:42done it alone
  35. 1:43we are each
  36. 1:45a patchwork quilt of those who have
  37. 1:47loved us
  38. 1:48those who have believed in our futures
  39. 1:51those who showed us empathy and kindness
  40. 1:55or told us the truth even when it wasn't
  41. 1:57easy to hear
  42. 1:59those who told us we could do it when
  43. 2:01there was absolutely no proof of that
  44. 2:05someone
  45. 2:06read stories to you
  46. 2:08and taught you to dream
  47. 2:10and offered up some moral code of right
  48. 2:14and wrong for you to try and live by
  49. 2:17someone tried their best to explain
  50. 2:21every concept in this insanely complex
  51. 2:23world to the child that was you
  52. 2:26as you asked a bazillion questions like
  53. 2:29how does the moon work and why can we
  54. 2:32eat salad but not grass
  55. 2:36and maybe they didn't do it perfectly
  56. 2:38no one ever can
  57. 2:41maybe they aren't with us anymore
  58. 2:43in that case i hope you'll remember them
  59. 2:45today
  60. 2:46if they are in this stadium i hope
  61. 2:48you'll find your own way
  62. 2:50to express your gratitude for all the
  63. 2:52steps
  64. 2:54and missteps
  65. 2:55that have led us
  66. 2:57to this common destination
  67. 3:07i know that words are supposed to be my
  68. 3:09thing but i will never be able to find
  69. 3:11the words to thank my mom and dad
  70. 3:14my brother austin for the sacrifices
  71. 3:16they made every day so i could go from
  72. 3:18singing in coffee houses to standing up
  73. 3:21here with you all today because no words
  74. 3:24would ever be enough
  75. 3:31to all the incredible parents family
  76. 3:34members
  77. 3:35mentors
  78. 3:36teachers
  79. 3:37allies
  80. 3:38friends and loved ones here today who
  81. 3:41have supported these students
  82. 3:43in their pursuit of educational
  83. 3:45enrichment
  84. 3:47let me say to you now
  85. 3:49welcome to new york
  86. 3:51it's been waiting for you
  87. 4:02i'd like to thank nyu for making me
  88. 4:05technically
  89. 4:07on paper at least
  90. 4:10a doctor
  91. 4:13[Applause]
  92. 4:17not the type of doctor you would want
  93. 4:19around in case of an emergency
  94. 4:22unless your specific emergency was that
  95. 4:25you desperately needed to hear a song
  96. 4:27with a catchy hook and an intensely
  97. 4:29cathartic bridge section
  98. 4:37or if your emergency was that you needed
  99. 4:40a person who can name over 50 breeds of
  100. 4:43cats in one minute
  101. 4:45[Applause]
  102. 4:48i never got to have
  103. 4:50a normal
  104. 4:51college experience per se
  105. 4:54i went to public high school until 10th
  106. 4:55grade
  107. 4:57and then finished my education doing
  108. 4:59homeschool work on the floors of airport
  109. 5:01terminals
  110. 5:02then i went out out on the road for
  111. 5:05radio tour which sounds
  112. 5:07incredibly glamorous
  113. 5:09but in reality
  114. 5:10it consisted of a rental car
  115. 5:13motels
  116. 5:14and my mom and i pretending to have loud
  117. 5:17mother-daughter fights with each other
  118. 5:18during boarding so no one would want the
  119. 5:21empty seat between us on southwest
  120. 5:26as a kid
  121. 5:28i always thought i would go away to
  122. 5:29college
  123. 5:30imagining the posters i would hang on
  124. 5:33the wall of my freshman dorm
  125. 5:35i even set the ending of my music video
  126. 5:38from my song love story
  127. 5:40at my fantasy
  128. 5:42imaginary college where i meet a male
  129. 5:45model reading a book on the grass and
  130. 5:48with one
  131. 5:49single glance we realized we had been in
  132. 5:52love in our past lives
  133. 5:56which is exactly what you guys all
  134. 5:58experienced at some point in the last
  135. 6:00four years right
  136. 6:02[Applause]
  137. 6:06but i
  138. 6:07really can't complain
  139. 6:08about not having a normal college
  140. 6:10experience to you
  141. 6:12because you
  142. 6:14went to nyu during a global pandemic
  143. 6:17being essentially locked into your dorms
  144. 6:20and having to do classes over zoom
  145. 6:23everyone in college during normal times
  146. 6:25stresses about test scores but on top of
  147. 6:28that
  148. 6:30you also had to pass like a thousand
  149. 6:32cova tests
  150. 6:35i imagine
  151. 6:36the idea of a normal college experience
  152. 6:39was all you wanted to
  153. 6:42but in this case
  154. 6:44you and i both learned
  155. 6:46that you don't always get all the things
  156. 6:48in the bag that you selected from the
  157. 6:50menu
  158. 6:51in the delivery surface that is life
  159. 6:54you get what you get
  160. 6:57and as
  161. 6:59i would like to say to you
  162. 7:00wholeheartedly you should be very proud
  163. 7:03of what you've done with it
  164. 7:06today
  165. 7:07you leave new york university
  166. 7:10and then go out into the world
  167. 7:12searching what's next
  168. 7:14and so will i
  169. 7:17[Music]
  170. 7:24so as a rule
  171. 7:26i try not to give anyone
  172. 7:29unsolicited advice
  173. 7:31unless they ask for it
  174. 7:33i'll go into this more later i guess i
  175. 7:36have been
  176. 7:37officially solicited in this situation
  177. 7:39to impart
  178. 7:40whatever wisdom i might have to tell you
  179. 7:43things that have helped me so far in my
  180. 7:45life
  181. 7:47please bear in mind that i in no way
  182. 7:50feel qualified to tell you what to do
  183. 7:53you've worked
  184. 7:55and struggled and sacrificed and studied
  185. 7:58and dreamed
  186. 8:00your way here to dare
  187. 8:02and so
  188. 8:03you know what you're doing
  189. 8:05you'll do things differently than i did
  190. 8:07them
  191. 8:08and for different reasons
  192. 8:10so i won't tell you what to do because
  193. 8:12no one likes that i will however
  194. 8:15give you some life hacks i wish i knew
  195. 8:18when i was starting out my dreams of a
  196. 8:20career
  197. 8:21and navigating life
  198. 8:23love
  199. 8:24pressure
  200. 8:25choices
  201. 8:26shame
  202. 8:27hope and friendship
  203. 8:30the first of which is
  204. 8:32life
  205. 8:33can be heavy
  206. 8:35especially if you try to carry it all at
  207. 8:37once
  208. 8:40of growing up
  209. 8:41and moving into new chapters of your
  210. 8:43life
  211. 8:44is about catch and release
  212. 8:47what i mean by that is
  213. 8:49knowing what things to keep
  214. 8:51and what things to release
  215. 8:53you can't carry all things
  216. 8:56all grudges
  217. 8:58all updates on your ex
  218. 9:00all enviable promotions your school
  219. 9:03bully got at the hedge fund his
  220. 9:06uncle started
  221. 9:09decide
  222. 9:10what is yours to hold
  223. 9:12and let the rest go
  224. 9:14oftentimes the good things in your life
  225. 9:17are lighter anyway
  226. 9:18so there's more room for them
  227. 9:21one toxic relationship
  228. 9:23can outweigh so many wonderful simple
  229. 9:26joys
  230. 9:27you get to pick
  231. 9:28what your life has time and room for
  232. 9:32be discerning
  233. 9:35secondly
  234. 9:37learn to live
  235. 9:38alongside
  236. 9:40cringe
  237. 9:45no matter
  238. 9:46how hard you try to avoid being cringe
  239. 9:50you will
  240. 9:52look back on your life
  241. 9:54and cringe retrospectively
  242. 10:03cringe
  243. 10:04is unavoidable over a lifetime
  244. 10:07even the term cringe might someday be
  245. 10:10deemed cringe
  246. 10:12i promise you
  247. 10:14you're probably doing or wearing
  248. 10:16something right now that you will look
  249. 10:19back on later and find revolting and
  250. 10:21hilarious
  251. 10:23you can't avoid it so don't try to
  252. 10:26for example i had a phase where for the
  253. 10:30entirety of 2012 i dressed like a 1950s
  254. 10:34housewife
  255. 10:37but you know what i was having fun
  256. 10:39trends and phases are fun
  257. 10:42looking back and laughing is
  258. 10:44fun and while we're talking about things
  259. 10:47that make us squirm but really shouldn't
  260. 10:50i'd like to say i'm a big
  261. 10:52advocate for not hiding your enthusiasm
  262. 10:55for things
  263. 11:05it seems to me that there is a false
  264. 11:07stigma
  265. 11:08around eagerness
  266. 11:09in our culture of unbothered
  267. 11:12ambivalence
  268. 11:14this outlook perpetuates the idea that
  269. 11:16it's not cool to want it
  270. 11:18the people who don't try are
  271. 11:20fundamentally more chic than people who
  272. 11:23do
  273. 11:24and i wouldn't know because i've been a
  274. 11:25lot of things but i've never been an
  275. 11:27expert on chic but i'm the one who's up
  276. 11:30here so you have to listen to me when i
  277. 11:32say this
  278. 11:36never
  279. 11:37be ashamed
  280. 11:38of trying
  281. 11:40effortlessness is a myth
  282. 11:43the people who wanted it the least
  283. 11:46were the ones i wanted to date and be
  284. 11:49friends with
  285. 11:50in high school
  286. 11:52the people who want it the most
  287. 11:54are the people i now hire to work for my
  288. 11:57company
  289. 12:05i write it's i started writing songs
  290. 12:07when i was 12.
  291. 12:08and since then it's been the compass
  292. 12:11guiding my life and in turn
  293. 12:13my life guided my writing
  294. 12:16everything i do
  295. 12:17is just
  296. 12:18an extension of my writing whether it's
  297. 12:21directing videos or a short film
  298. 12:24creating the visuals for a tour
  299. 12:26or standing on a stage performing
  300. 12:29everything is connected
  301. 12:31by my love of the craft
  302. 12:33the thrill of working through ideas and
  303. 12:35narrowing them down
  304. 12:36and polishing it all up in the end
  305. 12:39editing waking up in the middle of the
  306. 12:41night throwing out the old idea because
  307. 12:44you just thought of a newer better one
  308. 12:45or a plot device that ties the whole
  309. 12:47thing together
  310. 12:49there's a reason they call it a hook
  311. 12:51sometimes a string of words
  312. 12:53just
  313. 12:54ensnares me and i can't
  314. 12:56focus on anything until it's been
  315. 12:58recorded or written down
  316. 13:01as a songwriter i've never been able to
  317. 13:03sit still
  318. 13:04or stay in one creative place for too
  319. 13:06long
  320. 13:07i've made and released 11 albums and in
  321. 13:10the process i've switched genre from
  322. 13:12country
  323. 13:14to pop to alternative to folk
  324. 13:17and this might sound like a very
  325. 13:20songwriter-centric
  326. 13:22line of discussion
  327. 13:23but in a way
  328. 13:24i really do think
  329. 13:26we are all
  330. 13:28writers
  331. 13:29and most of us
  332. 13:31write in a different voice for different
  333. 13:33situations
  334. 13:34you write
  335. 13:35differently in your instagram stories
  336. 13:37than you do your senior thesis
  337. 13:39you send a different type of email to
  338. 13:41your boss than you do your best friend
  339. 13:43from home
  340. 13:44we are all
  341. 13:46literary chameleons and i think it's
  342. 13:48fascinating
  343. 13:50it's just a continuation of the idea
  344. 13:52that we are so many things
  345. 13:54all the time
  346. 13:55and
  347. 13:56i know it can be really overwhelming
  348. 13:58figuring out who to be
  349. 14:00and when who you are now
  350. 14:04and how to act in order to get where you
  351. 14:06want to go
  352. 14:07i have some good news
  353. 14:09it's totally up to you
  354. 14:12i have some terrifying
  355. 14:14news it's totally up to you
  356. 14:19i said to you earlier
  357. 14:20that i don't ever offer advice unless
  358. 14:23someone asked me for it and now i'll
  359. 14:25tell you why
  360. 14:27as a person who started my very public
  361. 14:29career
  362. 14:30at the age of 15
  363. 14:32it came with a price
  364. 14:34and that price
  365. 14:35was years
  366. 14:36of unsolicited advice
  367. 14:40being the youngest person in every room
  368. 14:43for over a decade
  369. 14:45meant
  370. 14:46that i was constantly being issued
  371. 14:48warnings
  372. 14:49from older members of the music industry
  373. 14:52media interviewers executives and this
  374. 14:55advice
  375. 14:57often presented itself
  376. 14:59as thinly veiled warnings
  377. 15:02see i was a teenager
  378. 15:04at a time when our society was
  379. 15:06absolutely obsessed with the idea
  380. 15:09of having perfect
  381. 15:11young female role models
  382. 15:14it felt like every interview i did
  383. 15:18included slight barbs by the interviewer
  384. 15:21about me one day
  385. 15:23running off the rails
  386. 15:25and that meant a different thing
  387. 15:27to every person who said it to me so
  388. 15:30i became a young adult while being fed
  389. 15:32the message
  390. 15:33that if i didn't make
  391. 15:35any mistakes
  392. 15:37all the children of america would grow
  393. 15:40up to be perfect angels
  394. 15:45however if i did slip up
  395. 15:47the entire earth would fall off its axis
  396. 15:49and it would be entirely my fault and i
  397. 15:51would go to pop star jail
  398. 15:53forever and ever
  399. 15:56it was all centered around the idea
  400. 15:59that mistakes
  401. 16:01equal
  402. 16:02failure
  403. 16:03and ultimately
  404. 16:05the loss
  405. 16:06of any chance at a happy or rewarding
  406. 16:09life
  407. 16:11this
  408. 16:11has not been my experience
  409. 16:15my experience has been that my mistakes
  410. 16:19led to the best things in my life
  411. 16:23and
  412. 16:24being embarrassed when you mess up
  413. 16:26it's part of the human experience
  414. 16:28getting back up
  415. 16:30dusting yourself off
  416. 16:32and seeing who still wants to hang out
  417. 16:34with you afterward and laugh about it
  418. 16:36that's a gift
  419. 16:38the times i was told no
  420. 16:40or wasn't included
  421. 16:43wasn't chosen didn't win didn't make the
  422. 16:46cut
  423. 16:47looking back it really feels like those
  424. 16:49moments
  425. 16:51were as important if not more crucial
  426. 16:54than the moments i was told yes
  427. 16:57not being invited
  428. 16:59to the parties and sleepovers in my
  429. 17:01hometown
  430. 17:03made me feel hopelessly lonely
  431. 17:06but because i felt alone
  432. 17:08i would sit in my room and write the
  433. 17:10songs that would get me
  434. 17:12a ticket somewhere else
  435. 17:14having label executives in nashville
  436. 17:17tell me
  437. 17:18that only 35 year old housewives
  438. 17:21listened to country music
  439. 17:23and there was no place for a 13 year old
  440. 17:25on their roster
  441. 17:27made me cry in the car on the way home
  442. 17:30but then
  443. 17:31i'd post my songs on my myspace
  444. 17:34and yes myspace
  445. 17:38and i would message with other teenagers
  446. 17:40like me who loved country music but just
  447. 17:42didn't have anyone singing from their
  448. 17:43perspective
  449. 17:45having journalists write in-depth
  450. 17:48oftentimes critical pieces about who
  451. 17:50they perceive me to be
  452. 17:52made me feel like i was living in some
  453. 17:54weird simulation
  454. 17:57but it also made me look inward
  455. 17:59to learn about who i actually am
  456. 18:02having the world treat my love life like
  457. 18:05a spectator sport in which i lose every
  458. 18:08single game
  459. 18:09was not a great way to date in my teens
  460. 18:11and
  461. 18:12twenties but it taught me
  462. 18:15to protect my private life fiercely
  463. 18:19being publicly humiliated over and over
  464. 18:21again at a young age was excruciatingly
  465. 18:24painful
  466. 18:25but it forced me
  467. 18:27to devalue the ridiculous notion
  468. 18:29of minute by minute
  469. 18:31ever fluctuating social relevance and
  470. 18:34likability
  471. 18:37[Applause]
  472. 18:46getting cancelled on the internet
  473. 18:48and nearly losing my career
  474. 18:51gave me an excellent knowledge of all
  475. 18:53the types of wine
  476. 18:57[Applause]
  477. 19:01i know i sound
  478. 19:03like a consummate optimist but i'm
  479. 19:05really not
  480. 19:07i lose perspective all the time
  481. 19:10sometimes
  482. 19:11everything
  483. 19:12just feels completely pointless
  484. 19:16i know the pressure
  485. 19:18of living your life through the lens of
  486. 19:20perfectionism
  487. 19:22and i know that i'm talking to a group
  488. 19:24of perfectionists because you are here
  489. 19:26today
  490. 19:27graduating from nyu
  491. 19:35so this might be hard for you to hear
  492. 19:39in your life
  493. 19:41you will inevitably
  494. 19:43misspeak
  495. 19:45trust the wrong person
  496. 19:47under react
  497. 19:49overreact
  498. 19:50hurt the people who didn't deserve it
  499. 19:53overthink
  500. 19:54not think at all
  501. 19:56self-sabotage
  502. 19:58create a reality
  503. 19:59where only your experience exists
  504. 20:02ruin perfectly good moments for yourself
  505. 20:04and others deny any wrongdoing
  506. 20:07not take the steps to make it right feel
  507. 20:09very guilty
  508. 20:11let the guilt eat at you hit rock bottom
  509. 20:14finally address the pain you caused try
  510. 20:16to do better next time
  511. 20:18rinse repeat
  512. 20:22[Applause]
  513. 20:28and i'm not gonna lie
  514. 20:30these mistakes
  515. 20:32will cause you to lose things
  516. 20:35i'm trying to tell you
  517. 20:37that losing things
  518. 20:39doesn't just mean losing
  519. 20:41a lot of the time when we lose things
  520. 20:44we gain things too
  521. 20:47now you leave the structure and
  522. 20:48framework
  523. 20:49of school
  524. 20:51and chart your own path
  525. 20:53every choice you make leads to the next
  526. 20:55choice which leads to the next and i
  527. 20:57know it's hard
  528. 20:58to know
  529. 20:59which path to take
  530. 21:01there will be times in life where you
  531. 21:02need to stand up for yourself
  532. 21:05times when the right thing is actually
  533. 21:07to back down and apologize
  534. 21:10times when the right thing is to fight
  535. 21:12times when the right thing is to turn
  536. 21:14and run
  537. 21:16times to hold on with all you have
  538. 21:19and times to let go with grace
  539. 21:22sometimes the right thing to do is to
  540. 21:24throw out the old schools of thought in
  541. 21:26the name of progress and reform
  542. 21:30sometimes the right thing to do is to
  543. 21:32sit and listen to the wisdom of those
  544. 21:34who have come before us
  545. 21:36how will you know
  546. 21:38what the right choice is in these
  547. 21:40crucial moments
  548. 21:42you won't

  553. 21:52you're on your own now
  554. 21:55but the cool news is

  559. 22:10by our gut instincts
  560. 22:12our intuition
  561. 22:14our desires and fears our scars and our
  562. 22:17dreams
  563. 22:19and you will screw it up sometimes
  564. 22:22so will i
  565. 22:24and when i do you will most likely read
  566. 22:26about it on the internet
  567. 22:29anyway hard things will happen to us
  568. 22:32we will recover
  569. 22:34we will learn from it
  570. 22:36we will grow more resilient because of
  571. 22:38it
  572. 22:39and as long as we are fortunate enough
  573. 22:41to be breathing
