- 0:16my name is Greg Louganis I am the CEO
- 0:19and president of the foundation for
- 0:22individual rights and education also
- 0:23known as fire and I'm the co-author with
- 0:25Jonathan height of coddling of the
- 0:27American mind how good intentions and
- 0:29bad ideas are setting up a generation
- 0:31for failure in the book I work with a
- 0:34famous social psychologist Jonathan
- 0:36hight to try to get to the bottom of why
- 0:39we started seeing so many changes among
- 0:41students are right around of college
- 0:43students right around the Year 2013-2014
- 0:46we were trying to figure out initially
- 0:48why I saw so many more students
- 0:50demanding censorship of speakers
- 0:54demanding speakers be disinvited
- 0:55demanding new speech codes and they were
- 0:58framing it in terms of medicalised
- 1:00arguments not just that I'm offended by
- 1:02someone being on campus but not me but
- 1:05someone else will be medically harmed by
- 1:07that person being on campus I knew
- 1:10enough about psychology to know that
- 1:11that didn't sound right and then I asked
- 1:14my friend Jonathan who was a social
- 1:16psychologist and he said yeah that that
- 1:17doesn't sound right to me either
- 1:18and it so the whole book is more or less
- 1:21a social science detective story to get
- 1:23to the bottom of what's going on here
- 1:25and unfortunately what we discovered is
- 1:28that the attitudes about free speech on
- 1:30campus among students have gotten worse
- 1:32dramatically so over the past five years
- 1:34but worst of all what we've seen is a
- 1:37dramatic increase in anxiety and
- 1:39depression and unfortunately even
- 1:42suicide attempts particularly hitting
- 1:44young women for the generation who
- 1:46entered school around 2013-2014 so for
- 1:50the entire book we're trying to figure
- 1:51out what happened why it happened what
- 1:53went wrong but most importantly how we
- 1:55can fix it
