  12. 0:32german to a range of coffee break
  13. 0:34languages
  14. 0:36now if you've listened to coffee break
  15. 0:37french or spanish then you'll know that
  16. 0:40my role in those shows was to teach anna
  17. 0:44or kara and also to teach our listeners
  18. 0:47but in this program i'm going to be
  19. 0:49taking on a different role because my
  20. 0:52german isn't very good at all i can
  21. 0:54manage a few words but not very much so
  22. 0:57for that reason i brought along thomas
  23. 0:59and thomas is a native german speaker
  24. 1:02and he's going to be helping me and you
  25. 1:04learn german together
  26. 1:06so tomas can you introduce yourself
  27. 1:08please and let all our listeners know
  28. 1:10who you are and where you come from as i
  29. 1:13said my name is thomas i come from the
  30. 1:15south of germany from bavaria
  31. 1:18and i'm currently studying in innsbruck
  32. 1:20which is in austria and doing my
  33. 1:22master's in geography in natural hazards
  34. 1:25okay
  35. 1:26and we have asked you to help us out
  36. 1:29with coffee break german as a native
  37. 1:31german speaker you're obviously going to
  38. 1:33be bringing that authentic element to
  39. 1:35our course and you are going to be
  40. 1:37helping me improve my german over the
  41. 1:39course of these lessons yes i am a
  42. 1:42native speaker and i speak german every
  43. 1:44day and i hope that i can teach you
  44. 1:46german and all the listeners are able to
  45. 1:49speak perfect german at the end of the
  46. 1:51course excellent i guess then we should
  47. 1:53really get started with this first
  48. 1:55lesson so mark mr fatigue are you ready
  49. 1:58i am indeed done
  50. 2:01[Music]
  51. 2:07so before we go any further you've
  52. 2:09already asked me a german question
  53. 2:11thomas you asked me am i ready can you
  54. 2:13repeat that question for me
  55. 2:15it's too fatic
  56. 2:17once more it's too fatic
  57. 2:20now as thomas says german phrases then i
  58. 2:24will try to repeat the german phrases
  59. 2:26and my rather bad german accent
  60. 2:28and hopefully other listeners will also
  61. 2:30be repeating along with me let's hear
  62. 2:33the question one more time
  63. 2:41and that means are you ready
  64. 2:43now does each word mean
  65. 2:45the same in the same order there so bist
  66. 2:48does that
  67. 2:59are you ready and how would i answer
  68. 3:00that question
  69. 3:02if i want to say yes i'm ready
  70. 3:05yeah
  71. 3:06yeah okay so i i already know that so
  72. 3:08that's yeah for yes and if i were to say
  73. 3:13no what would i say i would say 9
  74. 3:17nine
  75. 3:18yes so like the number nine in english
  76. 3:21almost yeah it sounds the same so let's
  77. 3:23get into uh our rhythm of repeating
  78. 3:25these words so that our listeners can
  79. 3:27repeat along you say the word first then
  80. 3:29i'll repeat it and then you say it again
  81. 3:31so that the last thing your listeners
  82. 3:33hear is your correct pronunciation okay
  83. 3:35does that seem okay yes excellent so
  84. 3:38let's go with yes
  85. 3:39yeah yeah
  86. 3:41yeah
  87. 3:43and no
  88. 3:44nine nine
  89. 3:47nine
  90. 3:49okay and let's just come back to that
  91. 3:50question are you ready
  92. 3:53bistophetic
  93. 3:55bistro fatigue
  94. 3:56is
  95. 4:00let's learn some more german we are
  96. 4:03going to start with some greetings so
  97. 4:05how would you say in german hello
  98. 4:08hello
  99. 4:10okay that's not too difficult uh it's a
  100. 4:12good word to start with let's let's try
  101. 4:14that again you see it and then i'll
  102. 4:15repeat it hello hello hello
  103. 4:19okay so if hello is hello um can we just
  104. 4:22say goodbye
  105. 4:24uh it's slightly more difficult it's auf
  106. 4:26wiedersehen okay let's hear that again
  107. 4:29auf wiedersehen okay can you slow that
  108. 4:31down the first word seems quite easy
  109. 4:34but the the second word
  110. 4:36vida
  111. 4:37basically means see you again
  112. 4:40veda
  113. 4:44so let's repeat this word
  114. 4:46auf wiedersehen
  115. 4:47of wiedersehen of wiedersehen
  116. 4:51okay
  117. 4:53is there another way of saying goodbye
  118. 4:55like uh yeah
  119. 4:57easier one okay you just say juice
  120. 5:00say that again
  121. 5:04so is that more like an informal buy or
  122. 5:07bye-bye
  123. 5:08yeah you would say it in in daily life
  124. 5:10and if you just go out of the bakery and
  125. 5:12say juice
  126. 5:13and if i were leaving the bakery for
  127. 5:15example and i knew i was going to be
  128. 5:17returning tomorrow how would i say
  129. 5:20until tomorrow or see you tomorrow
  130. 5:22miss morgan say that again this morgan
  131. 5:27biss morgan
  132. 5:30yes very good
  133. 5:31okay i'm not quite sure about this
  134. 5:34morgan
  135. 5:35can you say morgan again morgan
  136. 5:39so as i said i'm from the south of
  137. 5:41germany of bavaria and in bavaria you
  138. 5:44tend to roll the vr so it's morgan
  139. 5:47but if you go further north it's more
  140. 5:49like a morgan morgan
  141. 5:51okay well me being a scot i can roll my
  142. 5:54r's very easily so i can say morgan
  143. 5:57morgan but if i'm further north in
  144. 5:59germany i would maybe say something
  145. 6:01different i would say morgan
  146. 6:03so to say until tomorrow or see you
  147. 6:05tomorrow
  148. 6:06i can say bis morgen yes
  149. 6:10and morgan as we heard also means
  150. 6:12morning so if you want it's early in the
  151. 6:14day you just say guten morgen what means
  152. 6:17good morning
  153. 6:18okay so we've got see let's hear that
  154. 6:20again sorry guten morgen
  155. 6:23guten morgen
  156. 6:24guten morgen guten morgen
  157. 6:27okay
  158. 6:28guten morgen
  159. 6:30and the other one bismartin
  160. 6:32bismargen until tomorrow yes and good
  161. 6:35morning good morning okay
  162. 6:37so i think we'll we'll leave the other
  163. 6:40greetings for different times of the day
  164. 6:42until a later lesson but let's just
  165. 6:44focus on these ones now we've got
  166. 6:46hello
  167. 6:49we've got
  168. 6:50goodbye which was au vida zayn auf
  169. 6:52wiedersehen or jus or trust that's the
  170. 6:54other one so that's like by choose
  171. 6:59and then we had until tomorrow is morgan
  172. 7:02bismargen
  173. 7:04miss morgan
  174. 7:05and we also learned there good morning
  175. 7:08which was guten morgen
  176. 7:10guten morgen guten
  177. 7:14so one of the other things that i would
  178. 7:16always want to know early on in learning
  179. 7:18a language is how to say how are you
  180. 7:21so how would you see how are you in
  181. 7:23german in german you'd just say v gates
  182. 7:26say that again v gates
  183. 7:29so what's the first word here
  184. 7:31how we
  185. 7:32v
  186. 7:33gates
  187. 7:34are you or is it going
  188. 7:37so it literally means how is it going
  189. 7:39yes we get
  190. 7:42v gates
  191. 7:43very good big gates
  192. 7:45v gets b gates now how would i answer
  193. 7:48that question how would i say
  194. 7:50well
  195. 7:52good
  196. 7:53okay that's quite like good morning
  197. 7:54isn't it good yeah it's the same word
  198. 7:57so let's hear it again good
  199. 8:00good
  200. 8:01good
  201. 8:03so if i ask you vegets
  202. 8:10i'm assuming you've said thank you there
  203. 8:12yes let's hear that again thank you
  204. 8:15thank you
  205. 8:16okay so i can say good danke
  206. 8:20i'm fine thanks
  207. 8:21okay so i'll ask you vigit good thank
  208. 8:24you
  209. 8:25and now you ask me be gates good thank
  210. 8:28you very good
  211. 8:30if i wanted to say i'm well thank you so
  212. 8:34not just well thank you or good thank
  213. 8:36you how would i say the i am part
  214. 8:45so does that literally mean
  215. 8:47i am
  216. 8:48well or is it linked in some way to the
  217. 8:50gates
  218. 8:51it's going
  219. 8:53no it's it doesn't mean i am well but it
  220. 8:56means to me it's going well
  221. 8:59so samir means to me yes and gates it's
  222. 9:03going just like the question yes
  223. 9:06and good
  224. 9:07the well part okay so i can say mia gets
  225. 9:11good yeah that's correct
  226. 9:13mia gets good me it's good
  227. 9:17or i'm well thank you to me it's going
  228. 9:20well thank you
  229. 9:21mia gets good danke
  230. 9:23it's good thank you
  231. 9:25okay
  232. 9:26and if it's going very well
  233. 9:30is there a word for very it's the word
  234. 9:35so to say very good or very well i can
  235. 9:39say circled
  236. 9:41so good
  237. 9:42so let me think can i say
  238. 9:45mia gates they're good
  239. 9:47yeah
  240. 9:48i'm very valued okay
  241. 9:52so that would be i'm very well thank you
  242. 9:54or literally to me it's going very well
  243. 9:56thank you mia gets that good danke
  244. 9:59i'm very well thank you
  245. 10:01okay and if i'm not feeling very good
  246. 10:04how would i say
  247. 10:05i'm feeling bad
  248. 10:07schlecht would be the word for bad
  249. 10:09let's hear that again
  250. 10:14that's quite tricky
  251. 10:16so it's schlecht
  252. 10:19it's a sh sound
  253. 10:21and at the end of t
  254. 10:24but before the teethers are
  255. 10:27it's uh i think it's more
  256. 10:29easier to scottish people because
  257. 10:31they're used to the absolutely
  258. 10:34sound
  259. 10:35so let's see
  260. 10:38okay can i then replace
  261. 10:41good with schlecht yeah you can say me
  262. 10:44again
  263. 10:59you
  264. 10:59so we've got good
  265. 11:02good
  266. 11:08and
  267. 11:11so if you're a little bit in between
  268. 11:13you're not feeling really really good
  269. 11:14but you don't feel really bad
  270. 11:16you would say meergets nicht so good
  271. 11:20which means i'm not so good
  272. 11:22so let's hear that again
  273. 11:26so
  274. 11:41against nic
  275. 11:44yes you can say that but
  276. 11:46for uh i'm feeling regular i'm not so
  277. 11:49good you would probably say me against
  278. 11:51nicoboot
  279. 11:53what about wonderful excellent fantastic
  280. 11:56how would i say i am feeling fantastic
  281. 11:59mia gates wunderbar
  282. 12:01or mia gates oscar teichner
  283. 12:03okay i think the first one sounded a
  284. 12:05little more easy so let's go with that
  285. 12:07say it
  286. 12:08again wunderbar
  287. 12:11it means literally translated wonderful
  288. 12:14wonderful can i replace good again with
  289. 12:16this umiya gets wunderbar yes you can
  290. 12:19also always use the meerkats and then
  291. 12:21good schlecht
  292. 12:30and there was another word that you used
  293. 12:32in there also what was that word i was
  294. 12:34getting it can you slow that down please
  295. 12:38net let's take it syllable by syllable
  296. 12:40the first one the first syllable
  297. 12:50yeah very good housekeeping
  298. 12:54what does that mean
  299. 12:56extraordinary
  300. 12:57okay so i'm feeling fantastic yeah when
  301. 13:00you're on the top of your mood then you
  302. 13:01say oh
  303. 13:02no
  304. 13:16no the coffee break german team isn't
  305. 13:18just me and thomas

  313. 13:34and it's kirsten's job to help us

  319. 13:49thanks for inviting me to be part of
  320. 13:51this exciting new show i'm really
  321. 13:53excited to be involved in coffee break
  322. 13:55german and i'm sure it's going to be a
  323. 13:57huge success
  324. 13:59as mark has explained learning a
  325. 14:01language is not just about learning the
  326. 14:03language itself
  327. 14:05so much of a language is influenced by
  328. 14:07the culture all the cultures which
  329. 14:09surround it
  330. 14:10and that's why i'm here as your cultural
  331. 14:13correspondent
  332. 14:15in each episode of coffee break german
  333. 14:17i'm going to be bringing you some
  334. 14:19cultural information
  335. 14:21a little report on a particular aspect
  336. 14:23of culture associated with a part of the
  337. 14:26german-speaking world
  338. 14:27and i really hope that you enjoy these

  355. 15:09one minute german or a flavor of german
  356. 15:12which i worked on in the past ich bin

  369. 15:40your german grammar guru for the course
  370. 15:43i love grammar i'm a bit of a grammar
  371. 15:46geek to be honest and as the grammar
  372. 15:48guru it's my job to help you understand
  373. 15:51the patterns of the language just as
  374. 15:53mark and thomas have explained
  375. 15:55by learning the patterns you'll begin to
  376. 15:58understand how the language works and

  395. 16:38they're so friendly and welcoming
  396. 16:42i'm not a native speaker of german but
  397. 16:44as someone who has learned german from
  398. 16:46scratch i understand the difficulties
  399. 16:48for learners and so i hope i can help
  400. 16:51you overcome these difficulties just as
  401. 16:53my own teachers did for me when i first
