Google AI Glasses vs Meta Ray-Ban: It's Not Even Close! — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00Move over Meta Ray Bans because Google
- 0:03just officially blew the smart glasses
- 0:05race wide open at Google I/O. They
- 0:09showed off their brand new intelligent
- 0:12eyewear and the AI inside these things,
- 0:15it can do stuff that Meta can only dream
- 0:18of right now. So, Google says these are
- 0:21dropping this fall as a part of a
- 0:23massive new collection and today we're
- 0:26breaking down the three mind-blowing
- 0:29clips from the keynote, comparing them
- 0:31to the Meta Ray Bans, and talking about
- 0:34what this means for the future of smart
- 0:36glasses. So, let's dive in. Pulling out
- 0:38my phone, all I have to do now is ask.
- 0:44Hey, can you navigate me to the place I
- 0:46met my friend Giana at last week?
- 0:50Hey Nishtha, I've set your route to the
- 0:52Redwood Grove Nature Preserve from last
- 0:54week's hike. Want to add a stop on the
- 0:55way to grab your afternoon cold brew?
- 0:57Yes, Gemini, I would love that. Okay,
- 1:00let's pause right there. Did you guys
- 1:02catch what just happened? She didn't
- 1:04type in an address, she just said,
- 1:07"Navigate me to the place I met my
- 1:09friend Giana last week." And Gemini
- 1:12instantly knew the exact nature
- 1:15preserve. Think about how it did that.
- 1:18Google didn't explicitly say it, but the
- 1:22AI had to scan her private data. Likely,
- 1:25it was in her text messages, emails, or
- 1:27calendar and it pieced it together.
- 1:30Honestly, this gives me massive vibes
- 1:34from that banned Apple commercial with
- 1:36Bella Ramsey, the one that got a ton of
- 1:39backlash and they ended up having to
- 1:41pull it because Siri could never do what
- 1:43it was saying it could do.
- 1:45It's incredibly smart, but a little
- 1:47creepy how much the AI knows about your
- 1:50personal life, but it gets even better.
- 1:53Gemini then suggests stopping at a
- 1:56coffee shop on the way, knowing that
- 1:58she's been there before and asks if she
- 2:01wants her usual. That means the glasses
- 2:04are constantly tracking her location
- 2:06history, her habits, and your past order
- 2:10data to predict what you want before you
- 2:13even ask for it. That is true contextual
- 2:17AI. Now, before we hit clip two, we have
- 2:21to talk about how these glasses look.
- 2:24When Google introduced them, they
- 2:25explicitly stated that these are just
- 2:27two designs from a much larger
- 2:30collection that's going to be releasing
- 2:32this fall. So, if you don't love these
- 2:35specific styles, don't worry, more looks
- 2:39should be coming out when they release
- 2:40them.
- 2:41So, looking at these, the thicker Warby
- 2:44Parker style ones heavily remind me of a
- 2:47cross between the Schreiber and the
- 2:49Skyler styles that Meta currently has in
- 2:52their lineup. They look like actual
- 2:54lifestyle glasses, not clunky, chunky
- 2:57technology that, you know, you're
- 2:59wearing around. The hardware is getting
- 3:02sleeker, and look at these from Gentle
- 3:05Monster.
- 3:07Those are the craziest glasses I've
- 3:09honestly ever seen that offer tech in
- 3:11them. This is something I think a lot of
- 3:14women are going to resonate to, but it
- 3:16seems like it's probably going to be one
- 3:19of those where you either love them or
- 3:21you hate them. I think that by the time
- 3:24autumn rolls around, Google is going to
- 3:26have a full fashion lineup ready to
- 3:30compete. Okay, I'm starting walking
- 3:32navigation with a stop at Kufa Cafe.
- 3:34Turn around and head towards Bill Graham
- 3:36Parkway.
- 3:38With glasses, you can allow Maps to
- 3:40further understand your context and
- 3:43what's in front of you. So, you get
- 3:45detailed directions like the coffee shop
- 3:47is coming up on your right.
- 3:49Speaking of coffee, Nishta, do you want
- 3:51to show how Gemini intelligence can
- 3:52allow you to order that cold brew up
- 3:54ahead? That's a really good idea.
- 4:00Gemini, can you actually put my usual
- 4:02order in at that coffee shop we just
- 4:03talked about?
- 4:05Sure. I'll order you a nitro cold brew
- 4:07for pick up from Kopa Cafe on DoorDash.
- 4:11So, on the screen behind me, you can
- 4:13actually see Nishtha's phone that's in
- 4:15her pocket. Gemini is able to launch
- 4:18apps like DoorDash, then click through
- 4:21all the different option screens
- 4:23automatically to order her coffee.
- 4:26And in a moment, it's going to be ready
- 4:28for
- 4:29Nishtha's confirmation.
- 4:33I have prepared your order for the nitro
- 4:35cold brew from Kopa Cafe. Would you like
- 4:38to confirm? Yes, please. And add a tip
- 4:41for 20% too. Now, this second clip is
- 4:44where Google absolutely separates itself
- 4:47from Meta.
- 4:48Look at the screen. Her phone is still
- 4:50in her pocket, but Gemini is actively
- 4:53opening the DoorDash app, navigating the
- 4:56menus, and adding her usual coffee, and
- 4:59setting up the checkout. Right now,
- 5:02Meta's can look at something and tell
- 5:05you what it is, or they can search the
- 5:08web, but they cannot control the apps
- 5:11inside your phone. Google Gemini can.
- 5:14And while ordering a coffee on DoorDash
- 5:17hands-free is pretty cool,
- 5:19think about the bigger picture here. So,
- 5:23imagine like you're walking out of a
- 5:25venue and just telling your glasses,
- 5:28"Call me an Uber home." And it opens up
- 5:30the app, it sets your home address, and
- 5:33books it. Or saying, "Hey, add this song
- 5:37to my workout playlist on Spotify." Or
- 5:40"Turn on my living room lights. I'm 5
- 5:42minutes away from home." This turns
- 5:45smart glasses into a voice driven remote
- 5:47control for your entire smartphone. This
- 5:50is a massive massive game changer and
- 5:53these are the things that are so
- 5:55exciting about smart glasses. So, we saw
- 5:58how glasses work on your phone,
- 6:01but what about when they're attached to
- 6:03your watch to give you a glanceable
- 6:05display?
- 6:06It's not a Google IO without an audience
- 6:08selfie, but we're going to do it with a
- 6:10do it a twist this time. Can everyone
- 6:11strike their favorite pose?
- 6:15Gemini, take a photo of this amazing
- 6:17audience, but turn it into a cartoon and
- 6:19add a big blimp in the sky that says
- 6:21Google IO 2026 on it in fun colors.
- 6:24Everyone strike a pose.
- 6:28Okay, if this goes well, everyone go
- 6:30bananas in the audience
- 6:33because nano banana on glasses is just
- 6:36awesome. And just in a few seconds,
- 6:38you'll even see that seamless preview on
- 6:41her watch. Any second now, drum roll.
- 6:46Here we go.
- 6:49>> [cheering and applause]
- 6:56>> Thank you. Thank you, Nister. Round of
- 6:58applause for Nister.
- 7:02Finally, clip three shows off the
- 7:05ecosystem play. So, she takes a photo of
- 7:08the crowd using the glasses, and she
- 7:10tells Gemini to edit it into a cartoon
- 7:12with a custom blimp, and seconds later,
- 7:15the final edited image pops up as a
- 7:18preview right on her Pixel Watch. This
- 7:22opens up so many crazy features for
- 7:24smartwatches. I mean, think about using
- 7:27the camera on your glasses as a live
- 7:29viewfinder on your wrist for tricky
- 7:32camera angles.
- 7:34Or getting turn-by-turn navigation
- 7:36arrows blinking or buzzing on your wrist
- 7:39based on what your glasses are seeing in
- 7:41real time. So, I think by pairing the
- 7:44glasses with a watch, Google is ensuring
- 7:47that you never have to look at your
- 7:48actual phone screen again. So, what's
- 7:51the final verdict here?
- 7:53Meta currently rules the smart glasses
- 7:55world because their hardware is
- 7:57polished, the audio is amazing, and
- 8:00people love the Ray-Ban branding.
- 8:03But, Meta's AI is limited to basic
- 8:05questions and visual searches. Google is
- 8:08coming to the table with a vastly
- 8:10superior deep AI ecosystem that can read
- 8:14your texts, order your food, and talk to
- 8:17your other devices. If Google can
- 8:19deliver this software inside a
- 8:22lightweight frame with decent battery
- 8:24life as well, Meta is going to have a
- 8:27massive fight on their hands. But, I
- 8:30want to know what you guys think. Would
- 8:31you rock these new Google Glasses over
- 8:34the Meta Ray-Bans if it means you could
- 8:36leave your phone in your pocket all day?
- 8:38Drop a comment down below and let me
- 8:40know. And don't forget to smash that
- 8:42like button and subscribe to the

- 8:47hardware on my desk right now that I'm
- 8:49testing out for upcoming videos, so you
- 8:52don't want to miss it. I'm Chris, the
- 8:54smart glasses guy, and I'll catch you
- 8:56guys in the next one. Peace.
