- 0:00God's story, Parable of the Talents. So,
- 0:04part of God's story is when Jesus told a
- 0:06parable about a man and his servants,
- 0:09and it goes like this. One day, Jesus
- 0:12told a parable to help people understand
- 0:14God's kingdom. A parable is a story that
- 0:17Jesus used to teach something important
- 0:19and to help us know God better. In this
- 0:21parable, a man was preparing to go on a
- 0:24long trip. Since he would be gone for a
- 0:26long time, he put three of his servants
- 0:29in charge of his money. Kids, you might
- 0:31use dollar bills or some other kind of
- 0:33money, but back then, a large amount of
- 0:36money was called a talent. The master
- 0:38gave the first servant five talents,
- 0:41the second servant two talents,
- 0:44and the third servant one talent.
- 0:46Then he left for his journey.
- 0:49The first servant took the five talents
- 0:52and tried to make more money with them,
- 0:54and he did. He doubled the money that
- 0:56his master had given him. The second
- 0:58servant took the two talents and also
- 1:01doubled the money given to him. The
- 1:03third servant, who had one talent, dug a
- 1:05hole and buried it in the ground.
- 1:09After a long time, the man returned home
- 1:11from his journey and went to find his
- 1:13three servants. First, he talked to the
- 1:16servant given five talents. The servant
- 1:19said,
- 1:20"You trusted me with five talents. See?
- 1:22I have earned five more."
- 1:25And the master said, "You have done
- 1:28well, good and faithful servant. You
- 1:31have been faithful with a few things. I
- 1:34will put you in charge of many things.
- 1:36Come and share in my happiness."
- 1:40Next, he talked to the second servant
- 1:42who had been given two talents and had
- 1:44earned two more. The master said the
- 1:46same thing to him. "You have done well,
- 1:50good and faithful servant. You have been
- 1:52faithful with a few things. I will put
- 1:55you in charge of many things. Come and
- 1:58share in my happiness."
- 2:01Finally, it was time to talk to the
- 2:03third servant who had been given one
- 2:05talent. The servant said,
- 2:08"I know you are hard to please, and I
- 2:11was scared. While you away, I buried
- 2:14your money because I was afraid." Then
- 2:16he gave the master his one bag of gold
- 2:19back.
- 2:20The master was angry and told the
- 2:22servant he should have put the money in
- 2:24a bank so that it could earn more money
- 2:27instead of just burying it. Then he gave
- 2:30the single talent to the servant with
- 2:3310.
- 2:34He said, "Everyone who has will be given
- 2:37more. They will be given more than
- 2:39enough.
- 2:40And what about anyone who doesn't? Even
- 2:42what they have will be taken away from
- 2:44them."
- 2:46Jesus told this parable to help us
- 2:47understand that we're all an important
- 2:50part of God's kingdom. Just like the
- 2:52master trusted his servants to take care
- 2:55of what he gave them, God trusts us to
- 2:58take care of what he's given us, and not
- 3:01just money. God has given each of us
- 3:04different gifts, talents,
- 3:06and abilities.
- 3:08And he wants us to use those for his
- 3:10kingdom. Kids, what are some of the
- 3:12gifts and abilities that God has given
- 3:15you?
- 3:15Maybe you notice things people don't
- 3:17always pick up on, like when someone is
- 3:19sad or lonely. God wants to use you to
- 3:22show others kindness and love. Maybe you
- 3:25are great at explaining things and
- 3:27helping people understand. God can use
- 3:30you to teach others. Or maybe you have a
- 3:33lot of ideas. God wants you to use your
- 3:35ideas and share them with others. No
- 3:38matter what God has given you, you can
- 3:40use it to help others and glorify him.
- 3:44And that's a little bit about the
- 3:46parable of the talents. So, in case you
- 3:48missed it, here's the quick version.
- 3:50Jesus told a parable. A master gave
- 3:52three servants his money to manage. The
- 3:54first servant turned five bags of gold
- 3:56into 10. The master was happy with him.
- 3:59The second servant turned two bags of
- 4:02gold into four.
- 4:03The master was happy with him, too.
- 4:06The third servant had one talent and
- 4:08buried it in the ground.
- 4:10The master was angry with him.
- 4:12This is like God's kingdom.
- 4:14God wants us to use our talents to help
- 4:17others and glorify him. And that's a
- 4:20part of God's story.
