  16. 0:42we're about to look at one of the
  17. 0:44greatest stories of the modern times and
  18. 0:46specially in church history look at what
  19. 0:48we call the Azusa Street revival the two
  20. 0:51personalities we're gonna look at is
  21. 0:52Charles Parham and William J Seymour
  22. 0:55Charles Parham was born in Iowa where
  23. 0:57Billy Sonny would also be born a few
  24. 1:00years later and Seymour be born in
  25. 1:02Central Louisiana the other thing about
  26. 1:04them one was born the north one was born
  27. 1:06the south but also one was white and one
  28. 1:09was african-american
  29. 1:10and you have to remember at this time in
  30. 1:12American history the black and white
  31. 1:14communities did not work together the
  32. 1:16Jim Crow laws were in force there was
  33. 1:19still a lot of prejudice going on a lot
  34. 1:21of the mistreatment of the African
  35. 1:23American community but God had chosen
  36. 1:25something wonderful to happen in the
  37. 1:27world and chose the two unlikely
  38. 1:29characters to use them as the leaders of
  39. 1:32the modern Pentecostal movement let's
  40. 1:34begin with Charles Parham now Charles
  41. 1:36Parham was a Methodist and he was as a
  42. 1:40child he was sick and God had healed him
  43. 1:42he was very sick at one time he said
  44. 1:45that he was so thin and frail that you
  45. 1:47could hold his hand up they did have
  46. 1:49modern lines to a candlelight and he
  47. 1:51could count the bones in his hand that's
  48. 1:53how frail he was because of the
  49. 1:54illnesses that he'd suffered as a child
  50. 1:56and he'd heard about Dowie and a few
  51. 1:59other people had healing ministries and
  52. 2:01went to involve himself in them and find
  53. 2:04out how they worked and what was
  54. 2:05happening because he'd experienced
  55. 2:08hitting but he doesn't did not know how
  56. 2:09to minister healing so he goes up desire
  57. 2:12and likes dowing he goes to another man
  58. 2:14in Rockford Illinois who thought he was
  59. 2:16Jesus jr. or he was Jesus incarnate and
  60. 2:19didn't quite follow him but he did go
  61. 2:21see him and he comes back to Kansas and
  62. 2:24begins Bethel healing rooms which were
  63. 2:26similar to doughies healing rooms in
  64. 2:28Chicago where people would come and ask
  65. 2:31for healing and he would pray for him
  66. 2:33and give him scriptures and help him
  67. 2:34walk from sickness into health and and
  68. 2:36that's how he began his ministry there
  69. 2:39in Kansas in more of what I call the
  70. 2:41modern part of his life then he also
  71. 2:43decided that you know we need a Bible
  72. 2:45School you know Bible schools are good
  73. 2:47it used to be that the Bible schools
  74. 2:50produced some of the great leaders of
  75. 2:52all the nations of the world
  76. 2:53and I still think if we run the bible's
  77. 2:55goes right we can produce some of the
  78. 2:56great leaders for the modern world too
  79. 2:58so he put him advertisement in the
  80. 3:00Topeka Kansas newspaper and said all
  81. 3:03those who want to come and learn the
  82. 3:05Bible come together whatever money you
  83. 3:07have we'll put it into a big common
  84. 3:09account and we'll all live off of it
  85. 3:11together on common grounds so I don't
  86. 3:14know that happened today but back in the
  87. 3:16early 1900s it worked so the ad went out
  88. 3:19people came they had $500 they put it in
  89. 3:22the common account and they had a
  90. 3:24hundred they put it there whether they
  91. 3:26had to be put into the common account
  92. 3:27and they came to learn the Bible
  93. 3:28Charles parm and a few other teachers
  94. 3:31begin to to teach them and share with
  95. 3:34them what they knew about the scriptures
  96. 3:35but they also had chosen the place to
  97. 3:38hold the school at a place called stones
  98. 3:40falling now the reason why it's called
  99. 3:42stones Follies are called the men by
  100. 3:44then mr. stone was trying to reconstruct
  101. 3:47a european-style
  102. 3:48I would call it not a castle but a a
  103. 3:51large European home and he ran out of
  104. 3:54money and didn't quite get to finish it
  105. 3:57so it was called stones folly was his
  106. 3:59joke it was his mistake it was his mess
  107. 4:02so Charles Parham was gonna hold a
  108. 4:04special meeting in another part of
  109. 4:06Kansas and told all of his students that
  110. 4:08while he was gone and it was close to
  111. 4:10New Year's while he was gone he wanted
  112. 4:12him to study the book of Acts and the
  113. 4:15question he wanted them to answer was
  114. 4:17what were the signs or the significant
  115. 4:19signs of somebody being spirit-filled
  116. 4:22now they didn't know anything that we
  117. 4:25know today nor did Charles Farmiga
  118. 4:27thought it was a good assignment and so
  119. 4:29he goes away and hold his meaning comes
  120. 4:31back close to New Year's Eve of 1900 and
  121. 4:35he finds all of the students in the
  122. 4:39chapel area praying and seeking the
  123. 4:42baptism the Holy Spirit with the
  124. 4:43evidence of speaking in tongues
  125. 4:45he thought what is that so he caught
  126. 4:48them all in stop the prayer meeting for
  127. 4:51a moment and asked for what's going on
  128. 4:53give me a report on what you're doing
  129. 4:55and why you're doing it so all the
  130. 4:56students begin to say the assignment you
  131. 5:00gave us we conclude by the scriptures
  132. 5:02that when somebody is filled with the
  133. 5:04Holy Spirit
  134. 5:05or baptized in the Holy Spirit there is
  135. 5:08a biblical record that one of the
  136. 5:10initial first initial signs is that they
  137. 5:13speak with other tongues and it is a
  138. 5:15language from heaven it's a spiritual
  139. 5:17language it is a language and not known
  140. 5:20in the earth today it's from heaven and
  141. 5:22so they went over the scriptures and
  142. 5:25parem listened and so he said all right
  143. 5:28he wasn't quite for sure about it
  144. 5:30because he had not yet begin to study
  145. 5:32the scriptures himself but you know he
  146. 5:35did not want to stop the fervor or the
  147. 5:37zeal that the students had but he was a
  148. 5:39little concerned and there was a woman
  149. 5:41named agnes osmond i've always liked her
  150. 5:43name Agnes Agnes Osmond came up to
  151. 5:46brother parm and said let your hands on
  152. 5:48me and I'm I ever see the Holy Ghost and
  153. 5:50speak with tongues heaven where the poem
  154. 5:53goes well I'm not quite sure I want to
  155. 5:54do this because I don't know how to pray
  156. 5:57that kind of prayer for you to receive
  157. 5:58the Holy Ghost and I'm not as sure as
  158. 6:00you are that this is really what's true
  159. 6:02because he had not researched the
  160. 6:03scriptures on this subject back yet it's
  161. 6:06the first time he's hearing about it but
  162. 6:08because of a persistent woman which most
  163. 6:10women are persistent she kept pushing
  164. 6:12him in a polite way and finally he
  165. 6:14agreed to pray for so he praises lays a
  166. 6:17hands on her some way and and prays for
  167. 6:19her to receive the Holy Spirit and to
  168. 6:21receive the evidence of the Holy Spirit
  169. 6:23and and he goes I didn't know what was
  170. 6:25gonna happen or not so as they finished
  171. 6:28the prayer II took his hands off of her
  172. 6:29and him and the other two were standing
  173. 6:31by just kind of looked at her and for a
  174. 6:33few moments nothing happened and so they
  175. 6:35just kind of said there that oh well you
  176. 6:36know finding all of a sudden they record
  177. 6:38that she kind of got a little bit of a
  178. 6:40smile and a glow came on her and she
  179. 6:43begin to speak in an unknown language
  180. 6:45but they could tell that it was
  181. 6:47spiritually could tell it was a language
  182. 6:49it was spoken with distinction and so
  183. 6:52the first person in Topeka Kansas to
  184. 6:55speak in tongues of the modern
  185. 6:56Pentecostal movement was a woman named
  186. 6:59Agnes and so now that's nice not the
  187. 7:02great part of the story that's one big
  188. 7:04part but the next part and God gave her
  189. 7:06the ability to speak in a perfect
  190. 7:08Chinese dialect and write it in the
  191. 7:11early days of Pentecost they believed
  192. 7:14that you would speak into heaven
  193. 7:16and if God called you to Africa or China
  194. 7:19or South America or someplace in the
  195. 7:21world
  196. 7:21he even give you the language of the
  197. 7:23people he recalled to supernaturally
  198. 7:25that's what is why penny call spread so
  199. 7:28rapidly around the world because of that
  200. 7:30belief and it happened it was as soon as
  201. 7:34a god denomination that took that out of
  202. 7:36their doctrine of belief that's why you
  203. 7:38get received the Holy Spirit spoke in
  204. 7:40tongues and that was it
  205. 7:41the Assemblies took out the belief
  206. 7:43system that you also got a language of
  207. 7:45the earth as a part of your calling part
  208. 7:48of your missionary so that's why most of
  209. 7:50the Pentecost after the formation of the
  210. 7:52denominational time periods of Pentecost
  211. 7:54they didn't believe that but the
  212. 7:56original group from Topeka and Missouri
  213. 7:58they believed it and so Pentecost begin
  214. 8:02to come alive in modern America and so
  215. 8:05what happened like in every movement
  216. 8:07some people didn't like it so some
  217. 8:09students live some people persecuted
  218. 8:11they call them crazy names but it got so
  219. 8:14famous and so controversial that the
  220. 8:17United States government sent linguist
  221. 8:19from DC down to Kansas
  222. 8:22to see if it'd be true when the
  223. 8:25government linguist came they found
  224. 8:27different dialects of Asian languages of
  225. 8:30African languages and they found that
  226. 8:32this speaking in tongues was had a
  227. 8:35language base to it but it was not an
  228. 8:37Earthling language they could identify
  229. 8:38so we have government officials
  230. 8:41authenticating that it is a language and
  231. 8:43that there is other languages there and
  232. 8:45with agnes osmond you could go to their
  233. 8:47store cuz a sunny day in kansas you will
  234. 8:48find the original paper that she wrote
  235. 8:51the Chinese dialect out that when God
  236. 8:53gave her the language it's still there
  237. 8:55preserved in Kansas and so this is how
  238. 8:58the modern Pentecostal movement began
  239. 9:00now all of a sudden of course the devil
  240. 9:03fights everything God's doing
  241. 9:05mr. stone wanted to kick out harm and
  242. 9:07all of these people and Charles Parma
  243. 9:10said I wouldn't do that if I was you
  244. 9:12because God will judge you and mr. stone
  245. 9:14as I don't believe any of that and kicks
  246. 9:16them out well when they move out
  247. 9:19stones mentioned where they had the
  248. 9:21school and they had the outpouring burnt
  249. 9:23to the ground and to this day on the
  250. 9:26spot where stones mansion stood it's
  251. 9:28still a bare lot in Topeka Kansas so I
  252. 9:31guess when God curses something it's a
  253. 9:33its curse for a long time they leave
  254. 9:35Topeka Kansas and they go to Houston
  255. 9:37Texas and he starts his revival meetings
  256. 9:39and a school there now Charles Parham to
  257. 9:42get his crowd to come to his revival
  258. 9:44meetings would dress up in Bible
  259. 9:45characters and do parades down the
  260. 9:47streets of Houston as was other towns
  261. 9:49he'd preach and that's how he would get
  262. 9:51the attention of the people to come
  263. 9:53Charles problems nany came up to
  264. 9:55Annapolis Indiana to meet her friends
  265. 9:57and family and one of her friends was
  266. 9:58William J Seymour it's gonna come on
  267. 10:00major character in the Pentecostal
  268. 10:02movement he's a waiter in a restaurant
  269. 10:03there she meets up with him and tells
  270. 10:06him about what's happening with Charles
  271. 10:08Parham Bible days are here again the
  272. 10:10Apostolic faith has returned to the
  273. 10:12world primitive Christianity has come to
  274. 10:15America and he was excited about that
  275. 10:17because he was one of the few people
  276. 10:18that was trying to be on the edge of
  277. 10:20what God was doing at that time he was
  278. 10:23so enthused by what she was telling him
  279. 10:24he left his job packed his bag and moved
  280. 10:28to Houston Texas to be a part of the
  281. 10:30Bible School that Charles problem had
  282. 10:31just opened seymour travels to Houston
  283. 10:34Texas to be a part of Charles Parham Bob
  284. 10:36the first problem they face is that
  285. 10:39William J Seymour is an african-american
  286. 10:41man he was a part like I said earlier
  287. 10:44his parents were slaves when he was born
  288. 10:45and he had smallpox as a child so his
  289. 10:49face was scarred she always kept a
  290. 10:51little beard on his face to cover up the
  291. 10:53scars he was blind in one of his eyes
  292. 10:55but that wasn't the problem the problem
  293. 10:57was in the days that he was alive and
  294. 11:00going to Charles promised Bible School
  295. 11:01was the Jim Crow laws was enforced in
  296. 11:04America for you they don't know what Jim
  297. 11:06Crow laws are as simple as would have
  298. 11:08said is the black and the white people
  299. 11:09can't be together in the same room they
  300. 11:11can't sit next to each other they can't
  301. 11:13be in the same facility and so to
  302. 11:16accommodate the law of the land they
  303. 11:18leave the door of the school open or the
  304. 11:20window open and Charles harmless sit in
  305. 11:22the hallway and hear the lectures but he
  306. 11:25couldn't be in the classroom and the
  307. 11:26other white students and when it got
  308. 11:28real hot here you go outside and sit
  309. 11:30outside under the window and they leave
  310. 11:31the windows open hear the lectures that
  311. 11:33way now some people have tried to make
  312. 11:35this to be more of a racial issue than
  313. 11:38what it was I think this I think they
  314. 11:41were victims of the culture and of the
  315. 11:42time and I think that this next thing
  316. 11:45I'm about to tell you explains that
  317. 11:46these people were not prejudiced they
  318. 11:47were just the way life was them the
  319. 11:50first person to graduate in that class
  320. 11:52to receive an invitation to preach was
  321. 11:54Charles farms most famous student to be
  322. 11:57was William Seymour
  323. 11:58so William Seymour got an invitation to
  324. 12:01come to LA to preach a Nazarene Church
  325. 12:03didn't have enough money to get there so
  326. 12:05all the white students help take up an
  327. 12:07offering to buy him the train ticket to
  328. 12:09get him to LA so my thoughts are this if
  329. 12:12they were that prejudiced and mad at him
  330. 12:14being black they wouldn't take enough
  331. 12:15money to help him get to LA so my
  332. 12:17thoughts are they were victims of the
  333. 12:19time and of course we want them to be
  334. 12:21different but this is what happened the
  335. 12:23white students took up an offering and
  336. 12:25since Seymour out to LA to preach
  337. 12:28Seymour arrives in Los Angeles after a
  338. 12:30long train ride and it's a Nazarene
  339. 12:33Church passion by a woman Marik's had an
  340. 12:36except for the Parliament the first
  341. 12:38night he preached acts 2 1 through 4
  342. 12:41about the day of Pentecost and when the
  343. 12:43day of Pentecost had come and they
  344. 12:45received the Holy Ghost they spoke in
  345. 12:47tongues
  346. 12:47well the Nazarene
  347. 12:49quite believe that specially the
  348. 12:50password so they didn't tell him to go
  349. 12:53away he came back the next night to
  350. 12:54preach and they found the locked doors
  351. 12:56of the church with chains on it and a
  352. 12:59note telling him to go away
  353. 13:01can you imagine you've been called out
  354. 13:03to preach a revival meeting halfway
  355. 13:05across the country you preached the
  356. 13:07first night and you yourself have not
  357. 13:09spoken in tongues yet but you believe in
  358. 13:11it and you're preaching it and they
  359. 13:13close out the meeting that I've been
  360. 13:15telling you by just locking the doors
  361. 13:16and leave it a note and saying go away
  362. 13:18well there was a couple in the church
  363. 13:20that lid that 2:14 Bonnie Brae Street in
  364. 13:23Los Angeles the house still stands the
  365. 13:25day you go by and see it and they asked
  366. 13:27brother Seymour would you come and
  367. 13:29preach to us about the Holy Ghost we
  368. 13:31like it and so he goes to their house
  369. 13:33for one of the biggest reasons he has no
  370. 13:36place else to go and he has an
  371. 13:37invitation so he goes and starts a home
  372. 13:40meeting or a cell meeting and he starts
  373. 13:42talking to them about the Holy Spirit
  374. 13:43and speaking in tongues and what they
  375. 13:45saw in Kansas what they saw in Houston
  376. 13:48and what the scriptures were about it
  377. 13:49and a child started speaking in tongue
  378. 13:52and then the waiting's are speaking in
  379. 13:54tongues I'm pretty soon people begin to
  380. 13:56get through it the Holy Ghost and they
  381. 13:57begin to talk about it and the house
  382. 13:59fills up and so the house is full so
  383. 14:02they leave the front door open so all
  384. 14:03the folks who cooking it in fact I sit
  385. 14:05on the front porch and listen through
  386. 14:06the door in the window well when the
  387. 14:08front porch fills up they have open up
  388. 14:10the side window so you got people on the
  389. 14:12side of the house on the porch filled up
  390. 14:14and Pentecostals have always been loud
  391. 14:17people when you look at a family you
  392. 14:19have some children in her studious and
  393. 14:21some kind of it's mischievious and some
  394. 14:23are loud
  395. 14:24well the Pentecostals from day one had
  396. 14:27been the loud children in the body of
  397. 14:28Christ so when they got through with the
  398. 14:30Holy Ghost at midnight or 11 o'clock or
  399. 14:321 o'clock in the morning they just
  400. 14:34didn't speak in tongues quiet they did
  401. 14:36it loud and they screamed and they
  402. 14:37clapped and they yelled and they ran
  403. 14:39down the street and woke up all the
  404. 14:40people and so this crowd of you know
  405. 14:43three or four hundred it grew to about
  406. 14:44600 or so kept being noisy and the
  407. 14:47neighbors couldn't sleep they started
  408. 14:49calling the police take care of these
  409. 14:50crazy religious fanatics and so Seymour
  410. 14:53and some of the brothers decide
  411. 14:55they had to move the meeting because
  412. 14:57there's not enough space and they're
  413. 14:59causing trouble and it's they don't want
  414. 15:01to cause trouble they're gonna quite um
  415. 15:03down low so they're in between these
  416. 15:04then it's time to move
  417. 15:05and so they hunt for a building and he
  418. 15:08becomes the most famous address in
  419. 15:09pentecostal history
  420. 15:10it's 3/16 Azusa Street Azusa Street at
  421. 15:14one time was a horse stable and then it
  422. 15:16had become a church building and then
  423. 15:18see more about it and they had to go in
  424. 15:20and clean it up and so Seymour and the
  425. 15:22guys went there and had to get rid of
  426. 15:23all the hay there had been a fire in it
  427. 15:25so around the roof and around the edge
  428. 15:27of the walls
  429. 15:28there was black smut and up above that
  430. 15:30there was a two-story building so that
  431. 15:32was the first storey and up above
  432. 15:33it's where Seymour lived and had what
  433. 15:36you would call a counseling room for
  434. 15:37those who need more prayer and help so
  435. 15:40upstairs he lived and had a counselor
  436. 15:42who downstairs was a place where they
  437. 15:43held the meeting the pulpit in the
  438. 15:45beginning was two chicken crates on top
  439. 15:48of each other and the rest were just
  440. 15:49playing snailed together for people to
  441. 15:51sit on and they were didn't have proper
  442. 15:53chairs like we have here or what you
  443. 15:54have in your church it was a very what
  444. 15:57you call maybe quit put together but it
  445. 15:59had a lot of money so this got what they
  446. 16:01could make Church out of it and it began
  447. 16:03to happen
  448. 16:04Azusa Street lasted three and a half
  449. 16:07years every night and every day it never
  450. 16:11ceased there was always a service or
  451. 16:13someone seeking the baptism the Holy
  452. 16:15Spirit with the evidence speaking in
  453. 16:17tongues for three and a half years
  454. 16:19non-stop now you have a problem going to
  455. 16:21church for a whole week or for a
  456. 16:24three-day weekend rival meeting can you
  457. 16:26imagine for three and a half years night
  458. 16:28and day you have services and you have
  459. 16:31ministry to do you know a lot of people
  460. 16:33say we want a revival I don't think you
  461. 16:35do I think what you want as a visitation
  462. 16:37you want God to come and visit you for a
  463. 16:38couple of days and then leave so you go
  464. 16:40back and do what you want to do a
  465. 16:41revival is 24 hours work it's working to
  466. 16:46keep the meetings going
  467. 16:47take care of the hunger of the people
  468. 16:49take care of the needs all the things in
  469. 16:50his work so the revival hits you're
  470. 16:53asking for more work and more work and
  471. 16:55more work but it should be exciting work
  472. 16:57Azusa Street has some great stories one
  473. 17:01time the fire department was called
  474. 17:02because some of the people around the
  475. 17:04zoo solved flames on top of the building
  476. 17:06and so the fire department was not
  477. 17:08our modern with the big trucks they came
  478. 17:10with the horses another thing to come to
  479. 17:11put out the fire and they realized there
  480. 17:13was no fire and what the people saw
  481. 17:15Seymour said was the flames of Pentecost
  482. 17:17on top of the building
  483. 17:18so I always found it amazing that people
  484. 17:21saw fire thought it was an actual fire
  485. 17:23they called the fire department they
  486. 17:24came to put it out and there was no fire
  487. 17:26but about 600 people seeking God on the
  488. 17:28altar trying to receive the holy doesn't
  489. 17:30speak with tongues the other thing that
  490. 17:32I find amusing about Azusa Street is
  491. 17:34that people said that three or four
  492. 17:36blocks away sometimes this pull will
  493. 17:38come on then mark some would grab them
  494. 17:40and they wouldn't know why they'd be
  495. 17:42coming into the building and they'd come
  496. 17:43in and get saved or get healed so that
  497. 17:45pull of the holy spirit begin to have an
  498. 17:48occurrence around three or four blocks
  499. 17:50around Azusa Street now Azusa Street is
  500. 17:53not problem-free
  501. 17:54wherever there's people there's problems
  502. 17:56where there's a little God there's a
  503. 17:58devil trying to cause trouble
  504. 17:59Azusa Street at its height all over the
  505. 18:02world people are coming they have a
  506. 18:04magazine called the Apostolic state has
  507. 18:05over 50,000 subscriptions to it
  508. 18:08they met out monthly to give reports
  509. 18:10about people receiving the Holy Ghost
  510. 18:11and miracles and teachers from brothers
  511. 18:14Seymour so many things are happening but
  512. 18:16then of course here comes the problems
  513. 18:18first problem number one William Seymour
  514. 18:22falls in love with a nice they named
  515. 18:23Jeannie and they get married then one of
  516. 18:26his secretaries gets mad because it gets
  517. 18:28married and takes the medalist and lose
  518. 18:30to Portland Oregon so why did he do that
  519. 18:33and why did that happen well she did it
  520. 18:35because she felt like many of the early
  521. 18:37Pentecostals the Lord's coming back so
  522. 18:39soon you shouldn't get married and me
  523. 18:41distracted with your married life from
  524. 18:43the work of the Lord so when Seymour got
  525. 18:45married that made her mad and she took
  526. 18:47the Mentalist and went off to Portland
  527. 18:49McGinn her own ministry that is still
  528. 18:51functioning today in Portland Oregon
  529. 18:52that was the first problem the second
  530. 18:55problem is William Seymour has invited
  531. 18:57Charles Parham to come and hold meetings
  532. 18:59at Azusa Street because he looks at
  533. 19:02mother plumb as a spiritual father had
  534. 19:04the first invitation parem says known he
  535. 19:07goes to Zion
  536. 19:08Illinois's Dowie City because that was
  537. 19:10where the main focus of religious
  538. 19:13activity was at that time in America and
  539. 19:15so he wanted to go there and bring
  540. 19:17Pentecost to Zion but this is a mistake
  541. 19:20that he makes he should realize that the
  542. 19:22cloud
  543. 19:22moved from Chicago to LA to one of his
  544. 19:26own spiritual sons brother Seymour at
  545. 19:28Azusa Street so he misses it by about a
  546. 19:30year he finally shows up when he gets to
  547. 19:33his oozes Street he notices a couple
  548. 19:35things which I believe are legitimate he
  549. 19:37notices number one that there is a lot
  550. 19:38of fleshly activity and some demonic
  551. 19:42activity and the emotionalism was a
  552. 19:44little bit too high he film and so he
  553. 19:46tried to bring some constructive
  554. 19:48criticism and an instruction to brother
  555. 19:50Seymour and they got at odds with each
  556. 19:53other and split Karam believes as in the
  557. 19:55street and goes to the part of LA and
  558. 19:57holds on a holds a meeting and continues
  559. 20:00to preach and this is the first big
  560. 20:02split that happens in his industry that
  561. 20:04begins its decline now historians today
  562. 20:07talk about this split and that Seymour
  563. 20:10was a racist now I'm not totally
  564. 20:13agreeing that that's a total factor here
  565. 20:15I believe that it could be a small
  566. 20:16factor but I do believe that there was
  567. 20:18an issue with spiritualism and the
  568. 20:20altars of the street there was a degrees
  569. 20:22of emotion ISM going on that Seymour and
  570. 20:24parem did not find a way you discuss and
  571. 20:27how to resolve that instead they got
  572. 20:29upset with each other and they split
  573. 20:31historian today many use it as a means
  574. 20:34of saying he was against the black guy
  575. 20:35and white guy tried to take over that
  576. 20:37might have been there but that was not
  577. 20:39the first and the initial problem
  578. 20:41between the two the reason why it was
  579. 20:43tough for probably Seymour to make the
  580. 20:45corrections that parem wanted was
  581. 20:47because of the view of the day toward an
  582. 20:50akram african-american person here is a
  583. 20:52uneducated african-american man in the
  584. 20:55time of Jim Crow laws that God chose now
  585. 20:59to me that's a big statement the world
  586. 21:01may say we don't believe this we don't
  587. 21:03like that but God said I do and God
  588. 21:05chose a little black men to be the
  589. 21:07leader of the Pentecostal movement in
  590. 21:09modern times that's a statement and God
  591. 21:12chose him because he was telling the
  592. 21:13whole world I will use who I want to use
  593. 21:15how I want to use them which means so as
  594. 21:17there's hope for all of us and so the
  595. 21:20great thing about Azusa Street was that
  596. 21:22the Holy Spirit baptism of the evidence
  597. 21:25of speaking in tongues returned and
  598. 21:26stayed with the modern church that's the
  599. 21:29biggest and the greatest thing about it
  600. 21:31after these collisions these problems
  601. 21:34and a few other smaller issues Azusa
  602. 21:37Street begin the decline in attendance
  603. 21:38one because of the problem between him
  604. 21:40and parem and there was no
  605. 21:42communications to the magazine the
  606. 21:43mentalist had been stolen so people
  607. 21:45didn't know that it was still going so
  608. 21:47the attendants begin to go down but
  609. 21:49people who were touched by the street
  610. 21:51went around the world and began to go to
  611. 21:53Norway to Sweden to different parts of
  612. 21:56Africa and Asia so it began to spread so
  613. 21:58the purpose of us the street continues
  614. 22:01the purpose was to announce that the
  615. 22:03holy spirit and its baptism has returned
  616. 22:05to remain and all the blessings and the
  617. 22:07benefits of it has come when we look at
  618. 22:10us as a street today it is the birth of
  619. 22:13the most powerful religious movement in
  620. 22:15the 1900s probably in the last 200 years
  621. 22:18the Pentecostal movement is the largest
  622. 22:21movement of the Protestant people people
  623. 22:24group in any other group it's bigger
  624. 22:26than the Methodist it's bigger than the
  625. 22:27Baptist there are tongue talkers all of
  626. 22:30the world there's Catholic Charismatic
  627. 22:31there's Lutheran's that speak in tongues
  628. 22:33there's Methodist now so you put all
  629. 22:35them together they are the largest
  630. 22:37Protestant group in the world in less
  631. 22:39than a hundred and fifty years
  632. 22:41Pentecostals who were despised they used
  633. 22:44to think of you prayed in tongues who
  634. 22:46had a mental disease they used to think
  635. 22:48of you who was spoke in tongues you had
  636. 22:49a demon they were people who preached
  637. 22:51against them and told them to stay away
  638. 22:53from these meetings my grandmother was
  639. 22:56born again in spirit from Akron Ohio and
  640. 22:58she can remember that when people find
  641. 23:00out that she spoke in tongues they would
  642. 23:01cross the street and a walk on the other
  643. 23:03side because I didn't want to get the
  644. 23:04germ and there was an idea that you got
  645. 23:07around these people you get this disease
  646. 23:08Charles Parham would advertise it and
  647. 23:11say you know if you don't want to come
  648. 23:13to the meeting germs can be delivered to
  649. 23:14your house we've played off of that but
  650. 23:16I wanted to want to say I'm so glad that
  651. 23:18brother Seymour and brother parem party
  652. 23:20to what they did let's take the good
  653. 23:22that they did learn from their mistakes
  654. 23:24so we don't keep repeating in our time
  655. 23:26and let's not be ashamed to be a tongue
  656. 23:28talking group of people not be ashamed
  657. 23:30to be a loud group because we've always
  658. 23:32been loud enjoy the Holy Ghost and do
