0:05security and he didn't do it so the
0:07president was assassinated he prophesied
0:09television radio before there's even
0:11thoughts about it he built a city but he
0:13died thinking he was Elijah his name is
0:15John Alexander Dowie I'm Robert Cerdan
0:18and this is God's generals

0:31one of the great men that we've not
0:33heard much about in the Pentecostal
0:35circles is John Alexander Dowie mainly
0:38because his Indian days were not as
0:40great as his beginning days and today's
0:42broadcasts were to discuss the life and
0:44the ministry of this phenomenal man who
0:47came out of the British Isles actually
0:49he was born in Scotland in the city of
0:51Edinburgh and then they moved to
0:52Australia and he grew up as a little boy
0:54in a teenager when it's time to go to
0:56university they sit him back to Scotland
0:59to get his university training and when
1:01he went to choose his subjects to study
1:03he chose two interesting subjects he
1:06chose political science and theology and
1:09to me as a historian I think that's the
1:11first sign of his apostolic calling a
1:13man that has a love for God and want to
1:16know about God's Word and Surrey
1:18theology and the political side which
1:20speaks of the governmental side of the
1:22episodic anointing that was already in
1:24his life while he was at the school
1:26there in Scotland he also because he was
1:29so intelligent
1:30he was probably those students that
1:32always asked the question that irritated
1:34the teacher or all the students went not
1:36into him again with the question because
1:38he was such of a high level of
1:40intelligence in his subjects they made
1:42him an honorary chaplain of the schools
1:45medical infirmary and so he access to
1:48all the medical lecturers too and he
1:51noticed that when he would go down to
1:52hear the medical lectures and see the
1:54operation you know in those days let me
1:56explain when they did the medicals
1:58teaching they put the student in their
2:01rounds type of auditorium and then put
2:03the doctor or the surgeon and the person
2:05they're gonna operate on in the middle
2:07of this round theatre where all the
2:10students could see and watch the
2:11operation happen
2:12well gowing because he was the honorary
2:14chaplain and very smart and very known
2:16in the school was given access to hear
2:18the lectures and see what was happening
2:20so he would see what the doctor would
2:23say when the operation was going on and
2:24because he was involved in the infirmary
2:27and doing the chaplain service of the
2:29infirmary he was able to see the outcome
2:31of it later he would later form a doctor
2:34that would be a part of the early
2:35Pentecostal movement called don't trust
2:37your doctors so outra medicine and trust
2:39God only and that's where this doctrine
2:42came from because now it looked at
2:43medical science as an
2:44exact science and so from the very
2:47beginning of his ministry he begin to
2:49see that some of these things are
2:50medical science specially in the 1800's
2:52were not quite as good as just crushing
2:55God alone and so when that began to form
2:58in his life he never really finished
3:00college because his family got in
3:02trouble financially in Australia asked
3:04him to come back and help so he left the
3:06United Kingdom went back to Australia
3:08and took his first church his first
3:11church he didn't like and so he resigned
3:13after being there less than a year he
3:16left them because he said they were
3:17allergic people and did not deserve a
3:19pastor like himself and so he found
3:22another corrugation where he was
3:24welcomed and they were a little more
3:26active and want to do the gospel a bit
3:27more than the last one he was with and
3:29they also encouraged him to finish his
3:31schooling which he did during this time
3:34there was a plague that came through the
3:37outskirts of Sydney Austria where he was
3:39pastoring and the plague had killed 40
3:41people in less than two weeks and so he
3:44was doing all the funerals helping all
3:46the families and even officiating some
3:48funerals of other churches because their
3:50pastors had died and he was so
3:52distraught by this that he began to pray
3:54and ask God can't Jesus who walked the
3:57seas of Galilee and heal the sick then
3:59can he do something about what's
4:00happening in Australia and so this kind
4:02of praying brought to him a revelation
4:05God illuminated to him acts 10:38 and
4:08that verse says how God anointed Jesus
4:10of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with
4:12power who went about doing good and he
4:14all that were oppressed of the devil
4:16when that verse came alive to him he
4:20realized that sickness was of the devil
4:22and that healing was of God and Jesus
4:25came to do good things which was to heal
4:27and destroy the works of the devil about
4:29the time that this revelation came to
4:32live in his spirit there was a knock at
4:34the door and it was a child from down
4:36the street from one of his church
4:38members the mother had sent the child to
4:39get their pastor because the child in
4:42the home the other sibling was dying and
4:44so Dow had just had this revelation of
4:47acts 10:38 he runs out the house without
4:49his jacket or his coat and we're gonna
4:51find out what he did next which you've
4:54heard on today's show is only a small

5:55dalla was chasing the young child down
5:57the street who entered the home and when
5:59he walked into the living room of the
6:00house of the child and the church member
6:03the doctor was in there writing out the
6:05death certificate for the child in the
6:06other room and the doctor said to dr.
6:08Dow II I can't be here to sign the time
6:11of death on the death certificate I'll
6:12leave that for you to do I feel that
6:14everything else I need you to put the
6:16time and he's shown him in the little
6:18document where the death time was to be
6:20written in and Dow I said I won't do it
6:23and got upset and spoke very harshly to
6:25the doctor even where the doctor thought
6:27something's wrong with dr. Dow II he
6:29walked into the room where the little
6:31child was dying and the mother was
6:32walking around the bed distraught as you
6:34could understand that the emotional
6:36strain of knowing that your child was
6:38dying and there was no natural hope and
6:40you somehow thought the preacher could
6:42help you so you called for your pastor
6:44and he walked into the room and he asked
6:47the mother why did you call for me to
6:49come she said I thought maybe you could
6:51do something and he said I can do
6:53something I'm gonna pray and ask God to
6:55heal your child this is the first time
6:58dr. Dow II ever made those words and
7:01utter those words come out of his mouth
7:02say I'm going to pray a hidden prayer he
7:05did know how to pray healing prayer so
7:06he goes over to the bed and prays for
7:09the child ends a prayer and they take a
7:11few steps back to see what's gonna
7:13happen and nothing happened for the
7:15first few moments and all of a sudden
7:16the child's eyes open she set up in the
7:19bed and asked for some hot chocolate
7:21and then she wanted some toast and
7:23within an hour she was up in the room
7:25playing perfectly healed died went to
7:27every church member that was sick pray
7:29with them and nobody else in this church
7:31died of the plague and nobody else died
7:34in that church except for a few elderly
7:35people who he said it was it was their
7:37time to go why he was pastor of that
7:39church
7:39now this revelation of acts 10:38 begin
7:42the great healing ministry of dr. dolly
7:45he believed at that time that nobody
7:47else in the world had that revelation
7:49but him now he said how could he think
7:51that well number one realize the world
7:53of communications was not as developed
7:54magnin as it is today all they had was
7:57maybe newspapers and telegrams are just
7:59being developed and so they don't have
8:02the world knowledge they had and so now
8:04I had never heard anybody else preach
8:05this but himself he never seen any
8:07miracles
8:08and so he began to preach what we call
8:11the divine healing message from the
8:12gospel and he begin to get results and
8:15as his ministry begin to grow in
8:16Australia people would come to in the
8:18prayer lines and he was kind of like
8:20Smith Wigglesworth in a way that he
8:22ministered to people he would be very
8:25abrupt and he would hit quarters and
8:28slept knocks off people's bodies and
8:29newspaper folks would report seeing him
8:32roll on the floor after he had slapped
8:33their neck or their face or off their
8:35back of them or something and so this is
8:38not just Christian folklore this is
8:39secular press talking about what they
8:41saw in doughies meetings now before we
8:44get much further in doughies life we
8:46have to make a statement and talk about
8:48a little season of his life when dr.
8:51died was at the height of his healing
8:53ministry in Australia he had this
8:55uncanny ability to be distracted and to
8:58leave the ministry or go from his main
9:00calling he came into relationship with
9:04some people because of the popularity
9:05and his and his fame outside of the
9:08church world as well with folks who
9:10wanted him to run for a seat in the
9:12Australian Parliament in Australian
9:14government and so he quit the ministry
9:16to run to become a member of parliament
9:20in the Australian government and so he
9:22ran a campaign and back then prohibition
9:24was a big thing and so Dowie preached
9:27against smoking and drinking and living
9:28holy and doing these things and they
9:30thought he was going to win but he lost
9:32now let me make a statement when you're
9:35in ministry you're already in office
9:36there are two types of government in the
9:38earth there is a natural government and
9:40there a spiritual government if you are
9:42called into ministry you're in spiritual
9:43government you don't need to leave the
9:45spiritual to become one of the natural
9:47many apostolic gifts miss Reed that
9:50governmental called thinking that God
9:52has called in to do something in the
9:53natural and they make a mistake in miss
9:55reading it now he made that mistake his
9:58church went down he went bankrupt all
10:00kinds of bad things happen he lost it
10:02was a disaster and so finally he woke up
10:05and went back to his call and everything
10:07beginning to come back to him again so
10:09that also tells us if you will correct
10:11your mistake and correct your misstep
10:14and go back to where you belong then the
10:16blessing of God and the honor of God and
10:18the excitement of the people will all
10:19come back to you and so he goes back in
10:22ministry after losing this race and
10:24going through all the financial troubles
10:26and he comes like praying for the sick
10:27in his church grows and it begins to
10:30increase it grows into the thousands so
10:33he is the large what we call mega church
10:34today in the 1800s in Australia then
10:37Dowie decides it's time to take the
10:39healing message to the world and so he
10:41decides to get on a boat and head for
10:43America and so he heads to San Francisco
10:46and then San Francisco newspapers have a
10:48little article about the Australian
10:50healer it's coming to Frisco so it gets
10:53off the boat the reporters are there and
10:55the reporters start writing about all
10:56the things they heard about the healing
10:58minister or the heal evangelist from
11:00Australia but dally had a little
11:02uniqueness now this is not a good
11:03doctrine but it's a historical fact that
11:05he believed that unless you were born
11:07again you didn't deserve to be healed so
11:09he wouldn't pray for anybody unless you
11:11were saved and so people begin to come
11:14to his hotel room in San Francisco and
11:16asked for a prayer of healing for him to
11:18heal them and he would interview each
11:20one and if he didn't think they were
11:22saved
11:22he wouldn't pray for him and dally let
11:25the newspaper people sit right in the
11:26hotel suite with him so he was not
11:28scared to have the press or the doubters
11:31or the skeptics or his enemies per se to
11:33sit in the same room and watch it
11:34because it was God to do the healing he
11:36was just facilitating it through obeying
11:39the scriptures and so finally he found a
11:41woman that he believed that was born
11:43again and had the right to be healed and
11:45she had him Gorda the size of a small
11:47coconut they said and when he discovered
11:49that she was saved and felt convince her
11:51that she was he stood up walked over and
11:54slapped it off her neck and it fell on
11:57the floor and the newspapers people
11:59absolutely freaked out and summon out of
12:01the room they couldn't handle that was
12:02the first miracle that dolly did in
12:05America and all of a sudden because of
12:07that it begin to grow and they begin to
12:09hold revival meetings or evangelistic
12:12meetings where he preached the gospel
12:13ask people to get saved and begin to
12:15pray for the sick and he has not already
12:17begin to gain in California now another
12:19important fact that we must not forget
12:21to talk about was at the same time guy
12:23was in San Francisco another great
12:26general a woman named Maria Woodworth
12:28etter was over the bay in Oakland
12:30California having the worst meeting of
12:33her life and he heard about this woman
12:36pray for the sick and they did get
12:38healed well he had never heard of
12:39anybody else doing what he was doing so
12:41he goes over to this meeting meets Maria
12:43Woodworth editor becomes freezer for a
12:45few weeks and then turns on her he turns
12:48on her because in her meetings God would
12:50heal people and people fall into trances
12:52while she was preaching well Joey didn't
12:55handle that he thought that was terrible
12:57he called the papers and said this
12:59trance evangelism is of the devil and
13:01the relationship between mama Adam and
13:04dr. Dow II ended this was a mistake in
13:08Dolly's life God has different kinds of
13:10relationships that we have in our life
13:12and one of them is a divine relationship
13:14of a person or persons who have the
13:17ability to understand your calling your
13:19anointing your personality who and what
13:22you are and able to speak to you
13:24correctly and directly about any matters
13:27and not be inferior or feel overwhelmed
13:30by your personality recalled they're not
13:33yes people and mother etter was senior
13:36in the ministry or senior in the spirit
13:37then Dowie
13:38and I believe that God had arranged
13:40these two to me and the devil arranged
13:42for these two to break up we'll talk a
13:44little bit later in life because she was
13:46probably the only one it was able to
13:47speak to dolly and say don't do this or
13:50be aware of that and he would listen and
13:52the devil works a wedge between them
13:54that never was healed from those
13:56meetings in California he decided the
13:58next place he should go with Chicago at
14:00this time Chicago was the second largest
14:02city in America it's the new bubbling
14:05city in the American civilization as
14:08it's growing and the World's Fair is
14:10happening in Chicago and now he thought
14:13what better place to talk to the world
14:15about divine healing at the World's Fair
14:16so he goes to Chicago and asked to buy a
14:20booth or get some space in the fair in
14:21the fair and they wouldn't let him they
14:23did not want to have a healing
14:25Australian preacher in the fair but they
14:28let deal moody preach every Sunday in
14:30the World's Fair but they wouldn't let
14:31the healing evangelists preach so what
14:33he did he went out run outside the gate
14:36of the World's Fair and rented a
14:37building called the little wooden hut
14:39and he began to hold revival meetings or
14:42healing meetings right at the gate of
14:43the World's Fair he said if you don't
14:45let me in I'll stand outside where I can
14:47do it and he'd be
14:48one of the main attractions of the
14:50World's Fair even though he was not
14:52permitted in people got healed and they
14:55had all the signs of wonders and so
14:57people came there and they were shocked
14:58by what they saw God spoke to Delhi then
15:02to make his headquarters in Chicago in
15:04America and not to go back to Australia
15:07and make it at his headquarters but it
15:08was to be in Chicago so he settled in to
15:11make that his home base in America of
15:13Chicago and so in the fair was over he
15:16began to build his church it grew into
15:18another mega church it grew one time up
15:20to about eight to nine thousand people
15:21one estimates over ten and now it was
15:24bigger than life now remember Chicago
15:26had two great evangelists in it the
15:29famous deal Moody and dr. Dow it was a
15:31spiritual governor or the Apostolic gift
15:34of that city and so the people of the
15:36town liked him and didn't like him
15:38now here's what he did he came in on
15:40Billy's church and then he began to
15:42build healing homes now hitting homes I
15:45think he had up to over thirteen or
15:47fourteen estimated at homes that I've
15:49read that he built which was these large
15:51Victorian homes it had like two or three
15:53floors and big rooms and people have
15:55started coming to him from all over
15:56America in all of the world wanting to
15:58get healed doctors had given up they
16:00were gonna die they came and here's what
16:03he would tell them you didn't come to my
16:04healing homes take a room but here's the
16:06rule you cannot do what your doctor says
16:08you can't take your medicine you throw
16:10all of that out and you trust God and
16:12you do what we tell you to do and he'd
16:14go by and pray for each one and then you
16:16have people who he'd trained they would
16:18read the scriptures to them and minister
16:20to them until they got healed or they
16:22went home and so when that begin to
16:24happen miracles begin to follow
16:26controversy begin to follow the devil
16:29does not gonna let anybody do anything
16:32that is successful beginning to bring
16:33awareness of God's goodness awareness of
16:36God's power go unchallenged so if you're
16:39in ministry or you're gonna help a
16:41ministry you're in a battle
16:42so don't be shocked about the devil does
16:44or how things are reacted now he was
16:46arrested a hundred times for practicing
16:48medicine without a license in the city
16:50of Chicago back in those days if you
16:53laid hands on the sick you had to be a
16:55medical doctor trained by medical school
16:57that was recognized by the state or you
16:59were in trouble
17:00well Dow he said that's not right
17:02Jesus was not a doctor he went around
17:04praying for the sick guy here because
17:05God empowered him like he empowered me
17:07and so they had his own special paddy
17:10wagon outside the church door when da
17:13would get flu preaching and framed of
17:14the sick kid for this coat on walk out
17:16the side door and get in the paddy wagon
17:18and they go take him downtown to Chicago
17:20put him in jail he wouldn't pay the fine
17:22which I remember was like two or three
17:23dollars that went up to about ten
17:25dollars in the maximum he wouldn't pay
17:26it because he said I didn't do anything
17:28wrong
17:28so finally they went to trial and so Dow
17:31I hired two lawyers not to represent him
17:34but to inform him about the American law
17:36and he did his own talking and defense
17:39in the court Dow he is the man in
17:41American history that changed the law to
17:43where all of us can lay hands on the
17:45sick today in the name of Jesus and not
17:47be in trouble of breaking a law in
17:50America so we all owe a big thank you to
17:53dr. Dowling first standing up and saying
17:55this is not right and had enough faith
17:57and guts to stand up against the courts
17:59and to win so dr. Dowling thank you for
18:02making that great stand in American
18:04history dr. Dahle I have found one of a
18:07very rare voice recording of him that I
18:09want you to listen to now this is him
18:11preaching as a young I should say young
18:14men but him preaching and the timings in
18:16Chicago you'll hear it's an old wax
18:18recording so it's kind of scratchy so
18:20the words will be on the screen but
18:22you're good to hear his personality and
18:23here's a little bit of roughness and his
18:25compassion as he preaches his sermon

21:16ministry that the cult of time in the
21:18day show I can't tell you everything
21:19that's why I want you to call the number

21:38President Kennedy was assassinated but
21:40Dow had warned him dr. Dow he had a
21:43phenomenal ability to succeed everything
21:45that he said his hand to do but he also
21:47had some strange things that happened to
21:49him as well I want to talk to you
21:51because of time about the invitees of
21:53life the endeavors of life was a little
21:55more tragic than the excitement of the
21:57beginning and the crescendo of his life
21:59now he decided that living in Chicago
22:02for him was not what he wanted to do so
22:04he went 40 miles north of Chicago and
22:06about 66 hundred acres of land and on
22:10December 31st 1899 at New Year's Eve
22:14service in his church in Chicago he
22:16dropped the big screen and declared that
22:19he was going to build a city that was
22:22going to be totally Christian it is it
22:25became known as the longest last seen
22:26Christian utopia in American history and
22:29he called the city Zion it still is
22:31alive and functioned today as a city in
22:33Illinois and here's what now he did he
22:36secured the land he began to build a
22:39city the city grew to about 20 thousand
22:41citizens during his life and so it's not
22:44a small little village it's 20,000
22:47people it had a fire station it had
22:50public libraries it had a postal service
22:53it had school systems Dowie
22:55there was one church and there was one
22:57man that was the maker he was head of
22:58everything and to me even though that's
23:00a phenomena it was a great mistake God
23:03didn't call us to build
23:04little utopia's or little places where
23:07we get away from the world and we hide
23:09and wait for Jesus to come Jesus said go
23:12into all the world and preach the gospel
23:14to every creature that's our job to be
23:16salt and light in the world not to hide
23:19or be away from it and to say that's
23:21wrong and we're gonna stay here and live
23:23in this little exclusive thing when
23:25Christians go exclusive they go weird if
23:28we stay in the world we stay normal we
23:30stay functional your salt and light so
23:33Dow he builds a city in this city of all
23:35these citizens there came some famous
23:37people out of it John G Lake and F F
23:40Bosworth were neighbors in Dowie City
23:42Gordon Lindsey was born as a baby in
23:45design city but over a hundred and fifty
23:48different Pentecostal pioneers was in
23:52the city or around ours so Dowie of
23:54Zombies effect on Pentecostalism
23:57especially the healing side of it is
23:59phenomenal he helped train all of us and
24:01to be honest with you the doctrines he
24:03preached on healing we preached today he
24:05trained a hundred and fifty people that
24:08became pioneers of the Pentecostal
24:09movement so dowry has an effect on this
24:13great Pentecost one that we were part of
24:14today and we owe him thanks but the
24:17reason why you don't know his name like
24:19he wouldn't wiglesworth or Kathryn
24:20Kuhlman or some of these other great
24:22personalities is because he died
24:24thinking he was Elijah now I know that
24:27sounds crazy
24:29sounds like how could that happen but it
24:32happened he got into the place of a
24:35mental fixation because he saw nobody
24:37else that could do what he was doing
24:39under the anointing people around him
24:41begin and say you're special you're
24:43unique you're one of the in time
24:45servants and then either you're Elijah
24:46well people can say anything it's what
24:49you believe that you've got to make sure
24:51you don't let it take root inside of you
24:52somewhere in Delhi's heart and mind he
24:55begin to believe those statements from
24:57misguided followers that you relied to
24:59the restore your the Elijah here Elijah
25:02and he begin to believe it and begin to
25:04announce it so dr. Dowling built a city
25:07that was his first mistake begin to
25:08believe it was Elijah number two and
25:10then he got into financial difficulties
25:12when you make mistakes financial
25:14troubles come and so he decided the best
25:17way
25:18to solve the financial troubles was to
25:20build more Zions around the world he was
25:22on the bill design plantation in Mexico
25:24one in Jamaica now here's another one he
25:28was in negotiations for with the Turkish
25:31government to buy the city of Jerusalem
25:33in Israel and he'd already had an
25:35architect to lay out how they're gonna
25:37rebuild the walls and lay out the city
25:39if you go to the Historical Society in
25:41design you can actually still see the
25:42plans that dalian made to restore the
25:45city of Jerusalem
25:46so the man's ego was huge the man's
25:49faith was huge and he did phenomenal
25:52things but this would cause you to do
25:53great things does not mean everything
25:55you do is right Lillian Yeomans became a
25:57great Pentecostal preacher she was a
25:59medical doctor that got addicted to
26:01morphine after a surgery that was healed
26:03in Dolly's ministry and she made a great
26:05statement at I wanted to kind of stay to
26:07you and use it as a principle for life
26:09you can follow somebody's faith but you
26:12can always follow their doctrines and
26:14she would say of dowing follow his face
26:16but don't follow everything he says
26:18because some things he says is not quite
26:20right and I think that's what brother
26:22Hagin used to say is like an old cow he
26:24would eat the hay and spit out the
26:25sticks we as Christians have to know how
26:28to take the good things and release the
26:30bad things and I think dr. Dolly's a
26:32life in ministry every one of us should
26:34appreciate should study I wish I had
26:36more time to tell you about him promise
26:38on radio and television and all the
26:40other great miracles that he did that's
26:42why I keep saying get the book I spent
26:44years researching it I want you to get
26:45it and call the number on your screen or
